Wait, it is Christmas Eve, right? These PSN updates always come on Thursdays, and Christmas is on Friday so ... wait, it's Tuesday? Well, it looks like someone at Sony Europe pressed the "Release Stuff onto the PSN" button a bit too early. Either that, or they didn't want to work on the 24th. No, Europeans usually have an unflappable work ethic -- this must be some kind of mistake.

Regardless, there's a whole bunch of savory morsels in this week's update, including the LittleBigPlanet Pirates of the Caribbean pack, Vagrant Story and the Adhoc Party application. Check them all out after the jump!
The PlayStation.Blog has been kind enough to make a walkthrough video of Sony's brand new adhocParty service for PSP/PS3. With this program, games that don't have Infrastructure multiplayer modes on PSP can be played online through the PlayStation Network. Essentially, the PS3 uses some evil voodoo magic to trick the PSP into thinking it's playing Ad-Hoc with others.

The program is available for free on the PlayStation Store right now. SCEA just announced that the PS3 app will be available in North America this month! The application works with "select online multiplayer games" for PSP, using the PS3's internet connection. It is currently unknown whether it will support the same list of games available in Japan, but Sony specifically named Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite as compatible.

We're hoping that, some time in the next year, Sony will enhance its platforms even more with a new technology called the "space bar." It could really work wonders for adhocParty on PSPgo.
The PSP has a ton of terrific multiplayer games. However, many use local multiplayer, commonly referred to as Ad-Hoc. Games like Monster Hunter are ideal for online play, but don't natively feature internet support. However, in Japan, there's an easy workaround: Ad-Hoc Party, a downloadable app that allows PSP owners with PS3 systems to simulate Ad-Hoc connections through the PlayStation Network. Suddenly, players can go head-to-head in Dissidia, even if they're not in the same room.

We quizzed SCEA if Ad-Hoc Party was going to come to America a few months ago, and they told us it was something they were looking into. Siliconera has discovered a new trademark that suggests SCEA may be localizing the connectivity feature. This is good news -- especially because Valkyria Chronicles 2 will support Ad-Hoc multiplayer.
Sony trademarks 'adhoc Party' -- could it be coming to the US? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 17:20:00 EST.
The newest update to Sony's Japanese application that allows AdHoc play to now function over the internet via the PS3 is now available. adhocParty 1.04 add many titles to the mix, bringing the number of games supported by the service to over 100. In addition to bringing support to games that have co-op play, even games like Echochrome were included -- meaning you can now trade levels on the web. Japan's adhocParty service sounds like a promising new feature. The ability to transform one's local ad hoc multiplayer games into an over-the-net experience via a PS3 is certainly something we have to give credit to Sony for. However, what games are compatible with the service? Quite a lot really -- 33 to be exact, as Sony reveals. That's not bad for a completely free service. See a full list of all 33 titles after the break.

Continue reading Sony reveals 33 titles for Japan's adhocParty

Sony reveals 33 titles for Japan's adhocParty originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. Those of you who are eager to try the adhocParty application we reported on last week are in luck, sort of. The good news is, gamers outside of Japan can also test out the service that lets PSP games with local AdHoc play to function over the internet via the PS3. The bad news is, you'll need:

a PSP and PS3 with the latest firmware

the PS3 must have Wi-Fi capabilities (any PS3 except for the 20GB SKU)

the PS3 must be connected online with an ethernet cable and not a wireless connection

a Japanese PSN account

a game that works with the service; the only game confirmed so far is Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G

Apparently, not everyone will be able to fulfill all those requirements, but if you happen to be able to, head over to PSPHyper to check out their short and simple guide on how to gain access to the adhocParty.
How to access the adhocParty from the US originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 13:05:00 EST. The beta for adhocParty, a Japanese service that allows PSP games with local AdHoc play to now function over the internet via the PS3, was launched today. The service currently only works with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, but Phantasy Star Portable is next in line. Those of you with access to a PS3 and the Japanese PSN can download the application now -- according to PSPHyper, it works in the US. A video of how it works, after the jump.

[Thanks, Kspraydad -- via Tawkn and PSPHyper]
Continue reading Sony gets the adhocParty beta started in Japan

Sony gets the adhocParty beta started in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST.
