Not even leaving the PS3 version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alone-in-the-dark/"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a> on broil for several months was enough to bake out all of the problems maligning Atari's Central Park adventure. While so far the game has escaped the bulk of scathing reviews enjoyed by its Xbox 360 and PC cousins, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/10/fixed-alone-in-the-dark-gets-new-name-for-ps3/">re-dubbed</a> <em>Alone in the Dark: Inferno</em> still left many reviewers lukewarm with tepid gameplay resting beneath the title's extra-crispy exterior.<br />

    <li><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3171460&amp;p=37">1UP</a> (<strong>B-</strong>): "<em>Alone in the Dark</em> still has problems; all the technical fixes in the world can't make up for the dopey plot, unsatisfying endings, and the ridiculous reliance on fire to kill virtually all of the game's enemies, and the new PS3 sequence basically amounts to a bonus boss encounter that isn't enough to draw in anyone who's already played the game."</li>

The survival horror genre is set to get a shot in the arm in 2008 with a number of high profile, not to mention highly anticipated entries all vying for the opportunity to keep us jumping at shadows and screaming like little girls. Or, for those gamers who are, <em>in fact, little girls</em>, just keep them screaming. <br /><br />But as all of us know, build-up seldom equals pay-off, leaving us to look upon these titles with what could be described as a mixture of cautious excitement and malaise. However, rather than simply sit and wait to see what the games have in store for us, we decided to corner the teams working on this year's more notable survival horror titles, and pick their brains in true survival horror fashion -- with an ice pick. <br /><br />But having left the ice pick at the office (my bad!), we opted to simply ask those working on these titles why we should keep their games on our collective radar. This week we'll be talking with people working on such games as <span style="font-style: italic;">Dead Space</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Hill: Homecoming</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Project Origin</span>, and kick things off today by asking Eden Games' producer Nour Polloni about her studio's re-imagining of survival horror architect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alone-in-the-dark"><span style="font-style: italic;">Alone in the Dark</span></a>, particularly, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/scared-stiff">why should we care</a>?<br /></em><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/">Alone in the Dark (2008)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820984"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/vertigo_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820983"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/vertigo_03b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820982"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/reception_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820981"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/parking_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820980"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/metro01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><em></em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/scared-stiff-why-should-we-care-about-alone-in-the-dark/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Scared stiff: Why should we care about Alone in the Dark?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/scared-stiff-why-should-we-care-about-alone-in-the-dark/">Scared stiff: Why should we care about Alone in the Dark?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 17:15:00 EST. If you like cheese, then you're gonna love the new <span style="font-style: italic;">Alone in the Dark</span> gameplay trailer after the break. Try to ignore the giant pop-up on how to turn off the car's headlights and just focus on the voice acting, which even <span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil</span> fans might cringe at. Who knows, maybe the game is supposed to be filled with fromagey goodness?<br /><br />Considering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Alone-in-the-Dark/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Alone in the Dark</span></a> is expected to sell <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/infogrames-ceo-alone-in-the-dark-will-sell-2-3-million-units-th/">2-3 million copies this year</a>, that confidence might be a little hard to understand after seeing this <em>"GTA</em> in hell" video. Oh well, hopefully we'll still be able to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/latest-alone-in-the-dark-trailer-is-impressive-empty/">light plenty of stuff on fire</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/alone-in-the-dark-shows-off-driving-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alone in the Dark shows off driving gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/alone-in-the-dark-shows-off-driving-gameplay/">Alone in the Dark shows off driving gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 16:30:00 EST. With the first footage we've seen of the Wii's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alone-in-the-dark"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a> in action, the game's producer, Maxime Loppin, shows off the title to <a href="http://www.jeuxvideo.com/news/2008/00025662-alone-in-the-dark-reportage-a-new-york-partie-3.htm">JeuxVideo</a>. To be honest, we know next to nothing of what Monsieur Loppin is saying, but sometimes actions speak louder than words.<br /><br />After the break we've embedded footage of Loppin playing the game (he starts around 1:57). A nice touch: by moving the Wiimote and nunchuk away from each other in a "coat opening motion" players can view Carnby's inventory, which he conveniently keeps inside his coat. And if anyone is feeling super ambitious and wants to translate, be our guest.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/alone-in-the-dark-producer-shows-wii-controls-and-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alone in the Dark producer shows Wii controls and gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/alone-in-the-dark-producer-shows-wii-controls-and-gameplay/">Alone in the Dark producer shows Wii controls and gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST. For pack rats who salivate for all things Carnby, Atari has released images to <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=187460">CVG</a> of what collectors can expect to find inside the <em>Alone in the Dark</em> Limited Edition box. Currently only confirmed for release in Europe, the box will contain an Edward Carnby doll, official soundtrack CD, art book, making-of documentary and the game. There's currently no price attached and the limited edition is available only for Xbox 360, Wii and PC.<br /><br />We'll take this as a sign that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-but-atari-wont-confirm-march-rel/">oft</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may-ps3-even-later/">delayed</a> game might actually (shockingly) release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-june/">June 24</a>. After all, how can there be a "making-of documentary" if the game isn't done, right? Whether the game actually sells as well as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/infogrames-ceo-alone-in-the-dark-will-sell-2-3-million-units-th/">Infogrames is predicting</a> ... we'll have to wait and see.<span class="text_article_body"></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/alone-in-the-dark-scares-up-a-limited-edition/">Alone in the Dark scares up a limited edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. The first bit of video we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/latest-alone-in-the-dark-trailer-is-impressive-empty/">saw had our hero, Edward Carnby, traipsing throughout all manner of empty</a> (and beautiful) environments, smashing bits of furniture and putting out house fires. Then came <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/alone-in-the-dark-tech-demo-shows-gameplay-actual-enemies/">the tech demo, where we saw the game's innovative inventory system in action</a>, and learned of the terrible ways one can abuse mutant sewer rats. <br /><br />However, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33053.html?r=1&amp;type=wmv">this recent trailer for the game is a one-way ride aboard the Crazy Train</a> -- flaming elevator shafts, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headcrab">headcrab</a> knock-offs, and a high-speed escape from an ominously crumbling New York City? Yes, please. You can check out a cornucopia of recently released videos (including <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33047.html">a "piping" hot trailer</a> we've thrown after the break) <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/game/2582.html">on the <em>Alone in the Dark</em> Gametrailers channel</a> -- then spend the rest of the day hoping all subsequent media for the game becomes more and more intense, until previews of the game's climactic gunfight on the mouth of an active volcano against a cybernetically-enhanced Bea Arthur begin to surface.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/alone-in-the-dark-descent-trailer-looks-more-than-decent/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alone in the Dark 'Descent' trailer looks more than decent</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/alone-in-the-dark-descent-trailer-looks-more-than-decent/">Alone in the Dark 'Descent' trailer looks more than decent</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 19:35:00 EST. Infogrames CEO, David Gardner, tells <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUKPAC00944120080410?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=technology-media-telco-SP&amp;pageNumber=1">Reuters</a> he believes <em>Alone in the Dark</em> will sell two to three million copies this fiscal year. That means that, between its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-june/">June 24 release</a> and next March, the title needs to perform <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/see-the-top-100-selling-games-of-the-past-year/">better than a game like <em>BioShock</em></a>. Given the fact that the title is being released on Wii, PS2, Xbox 360 and PC (PS3 is "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may-ps3-even-later/">sometime in 2008</a>"), it just may hit that projection when combining all the systems ... maybe.<br /><br />Gardner's currently focused on getting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/atari-loses-more-money-in-q3-new-games-revealed/">Infogrames / Atari to stop hemorrhaging money</a>, and has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/phil-harrison-is-new-president-of-infogrames-wow/">Directeur G&eacute;n&eacute;ral D&eacute;l&eacute;gu&eacute;</a> Phil Harrison and friends looking to "get a business plan together that gets [Atari] to a break-even level." Unsurprisingly, Gardner couldn't give specifics on when he expects that to happen.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/alone-in-the-dark-will-sell-23-million-say-infogrames-ceo/?biz=1">GameDaily</a>]<br />

Not only does the video show off the intriguing "Real World Rules" engine (not to be confused with the Real World/Road Rules engine), it gives a small (okay, minuscule) sampling of some of the enemies you'll be going toe to toe with as you wander through Central Park like an acid-addled tourist.<br /><br />Alright, we're done making fun of this game. Between the gorgeous lighting, the innovative inventory management system, and the seemingly endless weapon creation capabilities the game will provide, we must say that our interest is piqued. Hopefully the next episode in the series of tech demos will shed light on <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=MMFw1UGZUKw&amp;feature=related">further Macgyverisms</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/alone-in-the-dark-tech-demo-shows-gameplay-actual-enemies/">Alone in the Dark tech demo shows gameplay, actual enemies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 21:00:00 EST. Atari may have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/former-ea-exec-david-gardner-becomes-ceo-of-infogrames/">new head honcho</a> ready to turn the company's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/infogrames-CEO-outlines-recovery-plans-for-company-and-atari/">staggering misfortune around</a>, but it ain't gonna happen overnight. Atari stated in its Q3 report that if it wasn't for the $3.7 million restructuring charge it would have posted a net income of $3.4 million this quarter. It's nice that the company "would have" made some income, but the simple fact is Atari has a net loss of $20 million for its first three quarters.<br />

But enough about the never-ending joke of Atari's financials, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=92675">Eurogamer</a> dug up some game information. Ignoring the scheduling mess which is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AloneintheDark/">Alone in the Dark</a></em>, there are currently plans for another <em>Neverwinter Nights 2</em> expansion, something called <em>Airborne Rangers</em>, and numerous other titles -- although we're sure everyone is super excited for <em>My Horse &amp; Me 2</em>. Atari says it will be announcing more titles in the coming weeks "one by one." Atari's fiscal year ends in March, so expect the devastating financial results a few months later.<br />

So, what's changed in the nearly two years since we first saw a trailer for Atari's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/alone-in-the-dark-moves-to-08/">oft</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may-ps3-even-later/">delayed</a> update of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AloneintheDark/">Alone in the Dark</a></em>? Well, in some ways, not much. Just like when IGN previewed the game last summer, it still looks more like a tech demo, showing off some of the fancier gameplay elements (what can't you light on fire?) than an action game due to be released in about three months. Where's the nasty monsters ... and can we light <em>them</em> on fire? You won't find the answer in the latest trailer, found after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/">Alone in the Dark (2008)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820984"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/vertigo_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820983"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/vertigo_03b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820982"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/reception_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820981"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/parking_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alone-in-the-dark-2008/#820980"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/metro01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Thanks, Marcus]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/latest-alone-in-the-dark-trailer-is-impressive-empty/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Latest Alone in the Dark trailer is impressive, empty</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/latest-alone-in-the-dark-trailer-is-impressive-empty/">Latest Alone in the Dark trailer is impressive, empty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 17:30:00 EST. It looks as though the game has taken some serious inspiration from <em>Resident Evil 4</em> and added some new ideas into the mix as well. One of the big focuses of the trailer seems to be the level of interaction players have with various objects. Whether it be setting things on fire (be they random bits of wood or trails of gasoline), destroying innocent furniture with an axe, or knocking down doors with a fire extinguisher, it seems a heavy emphasis has been placed on the manipulation of environmental objects.<br /><br />But who cares about that? This is <em>Alone in the Dark</em> and we want to see monsters, right? Fortunately, there is a glimpse of some of the long-legged beasties you'll be fighting. Unfortunately, it's <em>only </em>a glimpse, so we'll have to wait for a future trailer to show us more. Oh, and just for the record, we hope the final version of the game maintains the creepy children's choir. Creepy stuff. Watch the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/finally-alone-in-the-dark-gamelay-footage/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Finally, Alone in the Dark gameplay footage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/finally-alone-in-the-dark-gamelay-footage/">Finally, Alone in the Dark gameplay footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 13:00:00 EST. First, it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-pushed-to-september/">reported</a> that the game would miss its projected March release date (which was itself a delay from last November), then <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Atari/">Atari</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-says-atari/">made it clear</a> that the title had <em>not</em> been delayed 'til September. However, the company did not confirm a March release. And so here we are with the latest headline: <em>Alone in the Dark</em> has been <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=179722">delayed until May</a>. An even more interesting wrinkle, the PS3 version of the game will <em>not</em> see the light of day in May, and has been pushed to an indeterminate date sometime later in 2008. So there you have it, folks, the final word on <em>Alone in the Dark</em>. Unless they delay it again, of course.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may-ps3-even-later/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/surprise-alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may/">Surprise! Will wonders never cease? In one week, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AloneintheDark/">Alone in the Dark</a> </em>went from being released in March to being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-sept/">released in September</a> to "not delayed until September, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-but-atari-wont-confirm-march-rel/">we're not saying</a> when it's actually coming out." Now, according to CVG, the survival horror title will drop on the Xbox 360, Wii, PC and PS2 in May of 2008. As you may have noticed, the PS3 is absent from that list, and with good reason: That version is now due "sometime in 2008." That's especially interesting to those who have been following the <em>AITD </em>release drama, as Atari <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/ok-alone-in-the-dark-ps3-is-not-more-delayed-than-before/">previously said</a> that the PS3 version would arrive day-and-date with its brethren on other consoles.<br /><br />We have to admit that we're still looking forward to getting our hands on the game, if only to see if all the delays were time well spent. If we could be so bold though, could we suggest that the game ship with a special bonus copy of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Democracy"><em>Chinese Democracy</em></a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-may-ps3-even-later/">Alone in the Dark delayed until May, PS3 even later</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=90601">Eurogamer</a> says they've been informed by Atari that a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-sept/">reported delay of <em>Alone in the Dark</em> until September</a> is simply a rumor, but the company wouldn't take the next step and say the game will release as expected in March. Yeah, that's just a bit awkward.<br /><br />If you're having d&eacute;j&agrave; vu about <em>Alone in the Dark</em> delay issues, it's probably because <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atari">Atari</a> went through this recently with an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/ok-alone-in-the-dark-ps3-is-not-more-delayed-than-before/"><em>AitD </em>delay rumor on the PS3</a>. If there's any questions about <em>AitD</em> coming out in March, it's worth noting that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/alone-in-the-dark-moves-to-08/">IGN wasn't given hands-on time</a> when it did a preview on the game last August. It's only a matter of time before we use "delayed" and<em> Alone in the Dark </em>in the same post again.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-says-atari/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-but-atari-wont-confirm-march-rel/">Alone in the Dark not delayed, but Atari won't confirm March release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Jan 2008 17:30:00 EST. It looks like they may have spoken to soon, as Eurogamer reveals that Atari has <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=90601">taken exception</a> to the article, saying that the <em>Games for Windows</em> report was a rumor. Granted, this isn't an out right denial of the delay, but it looks like <em>Alone in the Dark</em> is at least still <em>scheduled</em> for a March release. We hope so, because we needs our survival horror fix.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-says-atari/">Alone in the Dark not delayed says Atari</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. They're all over the place aren't they? Of course, towards the end of 2007, delays were expected. After all, there were tons of good games (or at least games that were supposed to be good) coming out at the time, so it only made sense to push certain titles into the new year and out of the crowded holiday season. And now, it's time to delay one of those titles again. The title in question, lest you haven't figured it out by now, is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/aloneinthedark"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a>. AloneintheDark5.com <a href="http://www.aloneinthedark5.com/?p=32">reports</a> that the latest issue of <em>Games for Windows</em> magazine has the scoop. Originally scheduled for November of 2007 and then pushed to March 2008, the game has now been pushed to September. If the magazine is to be believed, it looks like that's probably a good thing, as <em>Games for Windows</em> spotted some some graphical and technical problems in a recent build.<br /><br />Okay, we're currently waiting for <em>three</em> different <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/re5">survival</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silenthillv">horror</a> games that just happen to be the fifth installment of each franchise. Here's hoping we get at least one of them this year.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-sept/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-pushed-to-september/">Alone in the Dark pushed to September</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Jan 2008 11:35:00 EST. A look back at our coverage of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Alone%20In%20The%20Dark">Alone In The Dark</a></em> reveals that most of the coverage on the game hasn't been focused on its intriguing episodic nature or any of its other features. The bulk of the posts are news of delays, both big and small pushing the game through the years like the world's slowest time machine. But today, friends, today ... we have another one of those posts. <a href="http://gfw.1up.com/"><em>Games For Windows</em></a> magazine reports in their latest issue that the game has been delayed from March to September of 2008.<br /><br />We know that Atari has appeared to lean on <em>AitD</em>'s promise a couple of times to try to make its future seem rosier. But, if we were at the helm, we would take the game deep underground until it was actually, really, seriously, no kidding going to come out. The last thing anybody wants is for Edward Carnby to get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dukenukem">Nukemed</a>.<br /><br />Update: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-but-atari-wont-confirm-march-rel/">Atari says its not September.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/alone-in-the-dark-delayed-until-sept/">Alone in the Dark not delayed until September [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST. In another <a href="http://ces.engadget.com">CES 2008</a> announcement, Microsoft has highlighted nine new additions to its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamesforwindows">Games for Windows</a> endeavor, promising to "continue the momentum for Windows-based gaming in 2008" and "revive" the PC gaming space. The titles due to be dressed in Microsoft's colors include:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Alone in the Dark</em> (Atari) <br /></li>
    <li><em>Bionic Commando</em> (Capcom)</li>
    <li><em>Conflict: Denied Ops</em> (Eidos Interactive)</li>
    <li><em>Empire: Total War</em> (SEGA)</li>
    <li><em>LEGO Indiana Jones</em> (LucasArts)</li>
    <li><em>Microsoft Train Simulator 2</em> (Microsoft Game Studios)</li>
    <li><em>Sins of a Solar Empire</em> (Stardock)</li>
    <li><em>Space Siege</em> (SEGA)</li>
    <li><em>Tomb Raider: Underworld</em> (Eidos Interactive)</li>
</ul>
The list not only cements the "Underworld" subtitle to Eidos' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/first-details-on-next-tomb-raider-emerge-in-play/">next <em>Tomb Raider</em></a>, but provides reassurance as to the longevity of Microsoft's initiative. Games for Windows is sure to be around for <em>quite</em> some time if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/aloneinthedark"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a> manages to arrive under its banner. Microsoft's polite press release is also keen to remind us that other expected 2008 titles -- <em>Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures</em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Borderlands/">Borderlands</a></em>, <em>The Club</em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout3/">Fallout 3</a></em> and <em>Frontlines: Fuel of War</em> -- will stand beneath the flapping emblem.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/new-titles-join-games-for-windows-portfolio/">CES 2008: New titles join Games for Windows portfolio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 15:45:00 EST. Make that eleven, as a new countdown site by the name of <a href="http://centraldark.com/">CentralDark.com</a> has popped up. The website was revealed via an email distributed by Atari, and features a video about Central Park. The video discusses how strange it is that Central Park hasn't changed in over a hundred years, citing several fictional newspaper articles by authors with names like "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Raimi">Samuel Raimi</a>" and "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carpenter">Johnathan Carpenter</a>" and concluding that the park has a dark secret.<br /><br />In other words, it looks like a teaser site for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/video-ny-is-freaky-new-alone-in-the-dark-trailer/">Alone in the Dark</a>, </em>which takes place in Central Park and is being published by Atari. The game's release is expected early next year, so it wouldn't surprise us if this is the beginning of its marketing blitz. The countdown ends in twenty-five days. Anyone want to take bets?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.360sync.com/2007/11/19/alone-in-the-dark-teaser/">360Sync</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/central-dark-site-teases-alone-in-the-dark-probably/">Central Dark site teases Alone in the Dark (probably)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 18:45:00 EST. What with its lingering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/atari-posts-12-million-q1-loss-whos-got-the-will/">financial worries</a> and loss of licenses, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atari/">Atari</a> is a lot like a three-legged dog seen limping pitifully to the side of the road. We want to help, we do, but we've already got a perfectly good dog at home with all four legs intact. With so much hardship, it's evident that much of Atari's livelihood seems pinned on the success of the upcoming franchise reboot of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/aloneinthedark/"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a>, so it's unsurprising that the company has opted to release the survival horror title for the Wii (shown) and PlayStation 2 in addition to the previously announced versions in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.<br /><br />The long-delayed game, which marks the fifth title in the <em>Alone in the Dark</em> franchise, was first announced in 2005, and features a script penned by <em>Sleepers </em>author Lorenzo Carcaterra. Interestingly, however, while the earlier announced versions of the game are being developed by <em>Test Drive Unlimited</em> devs Eden, the Wii and PS2 duties have been handed off to French developer Hydravision, which has some survival horror chops themselves having developed the <em>Obscure </em>series of games. It's still anyone's guess when <em>Alone in the Dark</em> in any form will make it to retail, though considering that there hasn't been a decent title in the series since Edward Carnby's 1992 debut, we think we can wait.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/alone-in-the-dark-confirmed-for-wii-ps2/">Alone in the Dark confirmed for Wii, PS2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 11:26:00 EST. Despite what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/alone-in-the-dark-ps3-gets-an-even-bigger-delay/">Eurogamer reported yesterday</a>, it looks like Atari <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=82845">changed their mind</a> and now <em>Alone in the Dark</em> on PS3 will launch simultaneously with the PC and Xbox 360 versions again. Looks like Atari dropped the ball talking to Eurogamer saying that the Xbox and PC versions were "first to be released" after the publisher's most recent launch schedule didn't have PS3's <em>Alone in the Dark</em> on it. Atari is now sticking with all the versions will be available during their current fiscal year, which ends March '08. We'll see about that.<br /><br />It was rather surprising that Atari announced (then took back) the PS3 delay this far in advance, given that most companies will mention it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/the-orange-box-delayed-on-ps3/">about a month before launch</a>. But, it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/atari-lost-another-70-million-this-year/">not like Atari is the go-to source</a> on how to run a company lately. Who knows, in the grand scheme we're wondering if the PS3 version will still get delayed, or if the Xbox 360 and PC versions will get delayed to meet up with the PS3. It's Atari, at this point, anything can happen.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/ok-alone-in-the-dark-ps3-is-not-more-delayed-than-before/">OK, Alone in the Dark PS3 is not more delayed than before</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 16:25:00 EST. We figured, "nah, not this game too," and waited it out, since there was no rhyme or reason for the delay. As it happens, Atari finally issued a statement saying that no, in fact, the PS3 version of the game is not delayed and will get released alongside the 360 and PC versions of the game as initially planned.<br /><br />Even so, the now noir-horror title never really had an exact release date except for a "before March 2008" tag slapped somewhere on it. A lot of sites want to believe it'll be out in January of 2008 and we'd like to see that, too. However, since game development has been taking a hell of a lot longer this cycle, we wouldn't be surprised if all the versions of the game waited until March of '08 to come out. Tweaking and optimizing are key this generation and we'd hate to see any version of the game suffer. We'll keep you posted as development continues on this long-standing franchise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/alone-in-the-dark-not-delayed-for-ps3-actually/">Alone in the Dark not delayed for PS3, actually</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 13:45:00 EST. <em>Alone in the Dark</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/alone-in-the-dark-moves-to-08/">already got a delay</a> recently, but this is a delay within a delay, as the PS3 version of <em>Alone in the Dark</em> will <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=82722">not come out simultaneously</a> with the Xbox 360 and PC version. Speaking with EuroGamer, Atari does not give a reason for the delay, but makes clear to emphasize that the PS3 version is still in development.<br /><br />We're not saying that we're used to these PS3 delays by now -- but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/timeshift-changes-history-oct-30-on-pc-xbox-360/">we</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/stranglehold-slips-again-on-pc-ps3/">totally</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/medal-of-honor-airborne-ps3-delayed-until-november/">are</a>. No reason is ever cited for the delays, and even some of them are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/playstation-3-responsible-for-gta-iv-delay-surmises-pachter/">embroiled in controversy</a>. Whatever, if we're just focusing on <em>Alone in the Dark</em>, the real question is if the game will see the light of day during its current release time frame which is before March of next year.<br /><br />Update: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/ok-alone-in-the-dark-ps3-is-not-more-delayed-than-before/">OK, Alone in the Dark PS3 is not more delayed than before</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/alone-in-the-dark-ps3-gets-an-even-bigger-delay/">Alone in the Dark PS3 gets an even bigger delay [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 15:55:00 EST. Despite what Atari <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/alone-in-the-dark-releasing-this-november/">originally said</a>, the hardly seen <em>Alone in the Dark</em> has been pushed off into fiscal year 2008, which for Atari ends March 31. Guess Atari is going to hinge their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/atari-lost-another-70-million-this-year/">fiscal salvation</a> on the sure to be &uuml;ber-mega-successful <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/atari-lost-another-70-million-this-year/">Atari Classics Evolved</a></em>.<br /><br />IGN recently <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/815/815130p1.html">got some time</a> with the game which is supposed to be out by next March. They didn't get to touch or see any combat, but they say it looks pretty. They were also shown that items can be combined to distract enemies, for example sticking a bag of blood on the wall will distract "possessed rats" while you sneak by. Essentially they saw a glorified tech demo of something that's supposed to be out in six months. Maybe they'll have something to show by the time the Game Developers Conference rolls around in February.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/alone-in-the-dark-moves-to-08/">Alone in the Dark moves to '08</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2007 13:25:00 EST. It's usually wrong in the end, but until you know for sure it's just a great means to power the hype train? We've got that feeling about <em>Alone in the Dark</em>. Because they scrapped using a subtitle or a numerical indicator, it tells us they've re-imagined the franchise and will take the game down a new, hopefully scary, path. An interview with producer Noir Polloni explains more, after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/alone-in-the-dark-the-definitive-horror-experience/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alone in the Dark: the definitive horror experience</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/alone-in-the-dark-the-definitive-horror-experience/">Alone in the Dark: the definitive horror experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 17:00:00 EST. And now we have a release month for when we can expect more. Atari just <a href="http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/12-06-2007-5692.html">announced</a> that <em>Alone in the Dark 5</em> will release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime this November (with its buddy <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/assassins-creed-to-assassinate-in-noveber/">Assassin's Creed</a></em>). If you aren't familiar, <em>Alone in the Dark</em> is set in present day New York where you head off to investigate paranormal activities relating to the afterlife in a very <em>Resident Evil</em> kind of way. Typical horror game? Possibly, but did we mention the graphics this game offers? Yeah, we're in graphical love and will definitely be checking out <em>Alone in the Dark 5</em> this November. Will you?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/alone-in-the-dark-5-set-to-release-this-november/">Alone in the Dark 5 set to release this November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jun 2007 11:30:00 EST. Presented in New York with a fictional story ... timeline ... thing, the game sounds kind of like an interactive film noir. Game director David Nadal recently talked about the technology used to make the game a whole new kind of horror. Since we love doing it, we'll summarize the important points below. As always, <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/aloneinthedark/news.html?page=1&amp;sid=6171138">read the interview</a> if you're particularly interested in the subject.<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li><em>AitD</em> relies on the Twilight engine used in <em>Test Drive Unlimited</em>. This engine will help build a very realistic New York City and it also allows the development team to alter whatever it needs to between consoles and PC with ease -- meaning everyone gets a very professional and polished port.</li>
    <li>The team has built a completely new rendering engine that delivers "photographic" features for lighting (since the game isn't exactly daylight-friendly), giving an extremely cinematographic look to the game.</li>
    <li>Physics is key, so advancements have been made on the Twilight engine to take this into consideration -- AI has also been ramped up.</li>
    <li>The musical score is interactive -- based on what you do, the music will shift. Fire off a shot, and the music will raise in tempo. Explore a dark corridor, expect slow, low-noise suspense music to take over. A nice effect.</li>
</ul>
<br />As we've said, this is a simple summary. Nadal goes into much more detail about the lighting and physics engines, but we won't bog you down with a bunch of terminology here. The game sound excellent and we're very excited to try it out. Time will tell how it progresses!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/20/alone-in-the-dark-interview-tech-to-advance-the-horror-genre/">Alone in the Dark interview: tech to advance the horror genre</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 May 2007 19:30:00 EST. Sure, it was the original survival horror title, but it just wasn't <em>Resident Evil</em>. Anyway, <a href="http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=72282">someone over at the PS3 Forums</a> took it upon themself to up two wallpaper-worthy crazy/beautiful screenshots (no, not the awful Kirsten Dunst movie). Since the game is more of an interactive novel than a "health-bar, ammo display" action game, we're not entirely sure if the screenshots are pre-rendered or in-game. We'll side with logic and reason and assume they're pre-rendered.<br /><br />The game is due out around January of 2008, so we're expecting some details of the game to surface closer to the big shows in the coming months. If you're itching to read something about the game, refer back to some of our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/alone-in-the-dark-screens-are-always-awesome/">other screenshot posts on the subject</a>. Or one of those times we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/22/alone-in-the-dark-set-for-simultaneous-multiplatform-release/">talked about the story</a>. Either way, prepare for this franchise to take a different step, moving itself into the light of success. Or something else epic, dramatic, flashy, and poetic.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/10/some-alone-in-the-dark-screens-candy-for-your-eyes/">Some Alone in the Dark screens -- candy for your eyes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 May 2007 19:00:00 EST. We're talking about <em>Alone in the Dark</em> -- headed to the PS3, 360, and PC "later this year". We've talked about it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/alone-in-the-dark-screens-are-always-awesome/">a few times before</a>, but we haven't had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/22/alone-in-the-dark-set-for-simultaneous-multiplatform-release/">anything really exciting</a> to show you other than our fantastic mad writing skillz. The "z" makes them more extreme... or X-treme, as the case may be. Now things are changing -- <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=162561">we've got a trailer for you to download</a> and it's pretty excellent (you'll have to click the "launch player" button on the right of the website).<br /><br />It starts off with a "everything you see is real-time gameplay footage" disclaimer which makes the following scenes all the more impressive. Taking place around events focusing on the pseudo-mystery of Central Park in New York City, something supernatural is out to get you! Whatever... the trailer does a much better job of setting the story up. Anything that gets an insane choir singing in some other language (reminded me a little of the Ghost in the Shell movies/series... and a bit of <em>Suikoden III</em>'s opening) is going to get gamers pumped. Let us know what you think.<br /><br />[<em>update: apparently the trailer is really old, but it doesn't change the fact that it's cool, right?</em>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/awesome-alone-in-the-dark-trailer-nuff-said/">Awesome Alone in the Dark trailer, nuff said [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2007 12:30:00 EST. So, we can honestly expect that EDEN GAMES, the folks behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/02/alone-in-the-dark-to-bite-tv-formula/"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a>, are going to bring something to the Wii. Could it be <em>Alone in the Dark</em>? <br /><br />Probably not, due to the graphical demands, but maybe they plan on bringing a new IP to the console or delivering some of their other games like the folks at Telltale? Today, we're proud to display the latest trailer for <em>Alone in the Dark 5</em>. We've shown off some creepy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/24/alone-in-the-dark-pics-unbelievably-scary/">screens</a> before, but it's always better to see a game in motion, especially when it's this pretty. You'll probably see the note at the beginning of the trailer, but we have to point out that this video is taken from real time game footage. In other words: wow. <em>Alone in the Dark 5</em> looks <em>very</em> nice. The facial detail alone is staggering, from the scarring to the glistening eyes. So let's see, we have <span style="font-style: italic;">Alone in the Dark 5</span>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/12/new-alan-wake-screens-and-details/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Alan Wake</span></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/20/former-clover-members-now-working-on-resident-evil-5-new-wii-ga/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil 5</span></a> all coming eventually. <center><a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=157542"><img hspace="12" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/screenshot_175120.jpg" vspace="4" border="0" alt="" /></a></center>On a personal tangent, I'm really excited about this game. Lately, I've been very interested in the more "adventure" side of things -- it was the crux of my decision to purchase a DS Lite (games like <em>Phoenix Wright</em>, <em>Hotel Dusk</em>, <em>Lost in Blue</em> really influenced and affirmed my interest). With that in mind, whenever I think about a next-gen game building off of that successful formula and twisting in some realistic horror, it's practically awesome personified.
<p> </p>
<p>On an impersonal tangent, a pocketful of new screenshots were released for the game. These are listed <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=157542">under the XBox 360 heading</a>, but the game is headed to the PS3 also. <em>Alone in the Dark</em> has been around for ages (but we've blocked out that awful movie... who was it in that? Christian Slater? Pssh), encompassing all of four canonical titles since its inception in 1992. It's about time we got a new one. Agreed?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/alone-in-the-dark-screens-are-always-awesome/">Alone in the Dark screens are always awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 15:30:00 EST. While it may be attributed to the translation of the page (my browser screws up... if yours pauses for a minute and asks you to stop the script or continue... just stop it), the release date for the upcoming title <em>Alone in the Dark</em> is difficult to understand. The fourth trimester of this year, meaning the fourth quarter, right? But the slated date is the first quarter of 2008, which is the fourth <em>fiscal</em> quarter of 2007. Seriously, let's just expect it around the holidays.<br /><br />The game is coming along nicely, it seems. Set for simultaneous release across the major next-gen consoles (except Wii, because this game is just too damn pretty for a motion-sensing GameCube) and PC, the game is set up similar to a Noir film, or a mystery novel. Heck, we could even say it's an interactive miniseries. There are about 12 episodes, each "running" approximately 40 minutes (but your explorative nature could run the "show" over an hour for each episode) and concluding with a cliffhanger. Looks sweet. We'll keep an eye out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/22/alone-in-the-dark-set-for-simultaneous-multiplatform-release/">Alone in the Dark set for simultaneous multiplatform release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 15:30:00 EST. Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka of <a href="http://www.somethingawful.com">Something Awful</a> infamy was the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/uwe-i-make-crappy-game-movies-boll-silences-his-first-critic/">second to fall</a> to the raging Boll's flying fists in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/23/internet-casino-sponsoring-raging-boll-event/">PR-driven series of boxing matches</a>. Like any dignified artist, Boll vowed to silence critics by <em>punching them in the face</em>, proving once and for all that ... well, we're not sure what exactly this proves. We know he's a good <em>boxer</em>, at least. <br /><br />In a <a href="http://v.somethingawful.com/misc/lowtaxlive.asf">video interview</a> after the match, Kyanka amusingly points out that he now detests Uwe Boll not as a movie misdirector, but as a human being. According to the pummeled pundit, Boll offered to give his victims training beforehand and promised that his punches would be just for show. Quite apparently, that was not the case (video embedded after the break). Regardless, it now becomes clear that critics played right into Boll's gloved ham-hands. The selected participants arguably never stood a chance, something the video game violator well aware of in his struggle for Pyrrhic victory. Punching out a critic does not make his films any less craptacular and the whole fiasco has made him look like a fight-makes-right psychopath. <br /><br />1UP contributor, Albert Art, <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5434832">snapped some pictures</a> at the event and even conducted a brief interview with Boll. When asked why he continues to make video game films, Boll responds with an enlightening, "I keep doing video game based movies because look why not, all the comic-book get made into movies, even comics that sold 2000 copies there are movies out from it, why like big famous videos games shouldn't turn into movies." That about says it all. <br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://rez2cool.1up.com">albertart</a> and <a href="http://dsmeet.com/">VGM</a>!]<br /><br /><a href="http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=c5f5dac2bad397080c0745a131e90d90&amp;threadid=2083776">Read</a> - Something Awful's forum responds<br /><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5434832">Read</a> - Albert Art's event coverage and interview<br /><a href="http://v.somethingawful.com/misc/lowtaxlive.asf">Watch</a> - Video interview with Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka after the match<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/uwe-i-make-crappy-game-movies-boll-silences-his-first-critic/">Watch</a> - Boll's previous boxing match<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/25/uwe-boll-does-something-awful-to-another-critic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Uwe Boll does something awful to another critic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/25/uwe-boll-does-something-awful-to-another-critic/">Uwe Boll does something awful to another critic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Sep 2006 21:55:00 EST. At least for <em>Alone in the Dark</em>, which is shaping up to be very, very cool looking. Why? It takes player immersion to the next level with the <strike>inventory</strike> pocket system -- the main character has a gun in one pocket, and the other pocket(s?) hold all the items you pick up. The game moves forward by allowing the use of cars, making it intuitive and easy to move to the passenger seat, back seats, etc in order to avoid attacks or get a good shot off. A bunch of fantastic effects were shown in a technical demo, as the screen clearly illustrates. A story surrounding conspiracy theories about Central Park in New York City really brings the story to life, as opposed to a fictional setting.<br /><br />Finally, the episodic release idea. Imagine the game more like a television series: you can buy the first piece of the "series" in stores (since it's not a complete game, let's hope it's not a complete price...) and then download future episodes from the internet. If the downloads are free, then a complete price may be worthwhile. Maybe. You might also be able to buy the "complete season" in stores. It's up in the air. This game looks awesome. Look for it on the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 next year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/12/alone-in-the-dark-isnt-survival-horror-actually/">Alone in the Dark isn't survival horror, actually...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Sep 2006 17:00:00 EST.
