That means the Wii U only shipped around 390,000 units worldwide in the last three months.

In a financial statement, Nintendo said its console failed to "maintain the initial sales momentum" due to delays of subsequent games, and the company aims to remedy this in the second half of this year through to next year by "releasing key Nintendo titles." The company believes this'll help the Wii U attain its projected shipping figures of 9 million for the next fiscal year (April 1 2013 to March 31 2014).

Nintendo's fiscal year net profits came in at almost half the company's projections, down from a projected ¥14 billion to just over ¥7 billion, or around $71 million. The figure nonetheless represents significant turnaround from the ¥43 billion net loss posted for the previous fiscal year. Nintendo forecasts net profits of ¥55 billion for its next fiscal year.

3DS shipping figures continue to climb, with the handheld now at 31.09 million, up over a million in the last quarter. The Wii remains short of the 100M mark at 99.84 million. The Wii outperformed the Wii U in the last quarter, shipping 70,000 units more at 460,000.

Did I kill the old mayor on the train before arriving and assume their identity? How was I elected mayor when I'm not even a registered resident of this town, a point that isn't even brought up during my registration process? Clearly I had been elected to public office, unprepared and unqualified for the job.

Nintendo hasn't announced an Animal Crossing: New Leaf bundle for Europe (or North America), and ShopTo's listing has the same Japanese-emblazoned box as above, rather than a new English one. Having said that, its emergence just ahead of a Nintendo Direct broadcast is a bit suspect. Maybe we'll frond out tomorrow if the bundle is coming to town along with New Leaf in June.

Update: While it still appears in a Google search, ShopTo has since removed the listing.

Most exciting is a "guided demo opportunity" of this year's 3DS relax-em-up Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the first time it'll be playable in North America. Other 3DS games on display include Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity, Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate, and eShop games Kersploosh! and HarmoKnight.

New Wii U games to be shown at SXSW include Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. SXSW Gaming will take place at the Palmer Events Center, and is open to the public.

However, Nintendo's end-of-fiscal-year hardware targets took a big hit on the back of shipping 3.06 million Wii U consoles in 2012.

Nintendo now projects a figure of 4 million for Wii U by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, down from the 5.5 million the company predicted in October 2012. 3DS shipments are now expected to hit 15 million for the year, down from initial projections of 18.5 million.

Nintendo has now shifted 29.84 million units of its handheld since launch. Meanwhile, the Wii's life-to-date figures are up to 99.38 million, with 3.53 million units shipped across the nine month period.

Regards software, Nintendo shifted 11.69 million Wii U games since the console's launch on November 18, The best-performing games were the bundled-in Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, coming in at 2.33 million and 2.01 million respectively.

On the 3DS front, Nintendo shipped 39.56 million units of the handheld across the nine months. Pokémon Black/White 2 soared to a total of 7.63 million on the back of almost 3 million sales in Japan alone, while New Super Mario Bros. 2 is at 5.96 million. Animal Crossing: New Leaf sits at 2.73 million, largely thanks to its popularity with Japan's female demographic. All figures are as of December 31, 2012.

As translated by Siliconera, Iwata said women represent 56 perecent of those buying a 3DS with the game, far greater than the 3DS' female install base of 31 percent.

Animal Crossing has long been put forward as being popular with women, and these figures show the series' 3DS entry certainly is in Japan. Iwata also noted the largest group of all New Leaf purchasers in the first three weeks of sales was 'female, aged 19-24.' The Nintendo chief used this to play down suggestions of smartphones being a risk to gaming devices like the 3DS.

"People often debate whether smart phones will eliminate the need of consoles for gaming," said Iwata. "When you look at these numbers, women of ages 19 to 24 are some of the core users of smart phone games. They say casual female gamers don't need a console, but after seeing these figures, we'd really like to reconsider that and the true value of console gaming."

The game was released in Japan on November 8. Nintendo will ship an additional 200,000 to meet demand later this week.

A surprising number of consumers have almost realized that they don't need to wait for Nintendo to ship additional copies. Iwata also tweeted that 200,000 copies have been sold digitally through the 3DS eShop since launch. However, enough of those were from cards sold at retailers that those cards have also run out of stock.
