The "self-help" era is upon us, even finding its way into the video game industry as of late. Aside from the obvious fitness awareness game on Nintendo's other system (we mean Wii Fit, of course), there have been quite a few attempts to help gamers improve their lifestyles and habits. Take, for example, the upcoming My Weight Loss Coach and Ubisoft's "Easyway" title to help people quit smoking.

Our favorite approach so far, though, was when DS Fanboy reader Dan used Pokémon to quit smoking. If there's anything we've learned from Dan's inspiring story, it's that the best way to curb an addiction is to replace it with another. We then decided that we wanted to help more of our fine readers that are suffering from such torments day in and day out. Pokémon may cure smoking, but what about other plaguing ailments? We're happy to say that after months of testing on monkeys and small children, we've finally come up with a few perfect video game cures.

Capcom released Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney in Europe last week despite the fact that its predecessor, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations has yet to come out. We thought it was bad enough when the games were being released out of order, but now two pieces of tenuous evidence suggest that Phoenix Wright 3 may not see a European release at all.

The first (less convincing) sign is that Apollo Justice's (loud) Nintendo Europe webpage has the string "AceAttorney3" in its URL. That doesn't really mean that the third Ace Attorney game isn't happening, rather that Apollo Justice is the third Ace Attorney game to be released, and that whoever created the URL didn't save a space for the real AA3.

More troubling is the fact that there is a site for Trials and Tribulations, but there are no longer any links to it. Could this point to a cancellation? Court Records members speculate that T&T would get a higher PEGI content rating than the other Ace Attorney games, and because of that, Capcom wouldn't benefit from releasing it. In any case, both the U.S. and Japan have cheap and plentiful Trials and Tribulationses. Feel free to partake!

Not only did the PSP gain momentum with the hideous brown, er, we mean shiny bronze model that released in Japan last week, but the Wii also beat out its portable cousin, sending the DS to third place in hardware sales:
  • PSP: 92,411
  • Wii: 48,796
  • Nintendo DS: 42,435
  • PlayStation 3: 9,107
  • PlayStation 2: 7,108
  • Xbox 360: 1,283
DS software fared better, though, with two new releases gracing the coveted top ten. Taiko Drum Master: 7 Islands' Adventure was the shining star of the week, reaching almost 56,000 sales. Summon Night gets an honorary mention, though, as it debuted in the fifth spot.

The Ace Attorney series is dear to our hearts, so when any information crosses the intertubes regarding Capcom's lawyering games, we foam at the mouth like rabid raccoons. Today's tidings regard both the Gyakuten Meets Orchestra concert, which took place in Tokyo, and the upcoming spin-off title starring Miles Edgeworth.

As much as we love Gyakuten Saiban and its music, we obviously weren't able to able to drag ourselves to Japan for what we're sure was an awesome concert. From what we understand, though, the CDs that you see so deliciously stacked in the video above will be made available for purchase on July 16th. Do want.

Also in the video (around the 4:00 minute mark) is a trailer for Edgeworth's game, called Gyakuten Kenji in case you haven't been keeping up (for shame!). The trailer is mostly just moving versions of screens we've already seen, but it also features a new character that will be showing up

This thread on Capcom Europe's forums is from earlier in the month, but the info contained within is still worth noting. There's still no European release date for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, but a forum administrator has confirmed that it will be out after the May 9th release of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.

As "Chompman" explains, "There's no spoilers in Apollo Justice that would stop you enjoying Trials and Tribulations if you played it afterwards though." Well, that makes it okay. European gamers are certainly used to later game releases by now, but out of sequence? That's a new and special way to irritate a fanbase.

Oh, by the way, the U.S. version of Trials and Tribulations is $18.99 at Amazon.

While playing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, we learned a neat little fact about cards. Apparently, a deck of cards represents a calendar year -- there are four suits because there are four seasons in a year, and there are fifty-two cards because there are fifty-two weeks.

Also, if you assign each card a numeric value from one to thirteen (with an ace equaling one, a king equaling thirteen), they will add up to 364. That's why there are two jokers: One makes the year complete, since a year has 365 days, and the other is there because there's an extra day during leap years.

Minae Matsukawa's final Apollo Justice developer blog entry has once again lifted the curtain on the development of our favorite DS lawyer-adventure series. Without going into too much detail, Matsukawa described the creation of the first video for the series to use motion capture, for which a male research-and-development team performed a female character's movements, and was a "natural" at it. What wasn't natural: Apollo's name. Apparently it took 22 meetings to come up with "Apollo Justice!"

In case you're in Tokyo, you like game music, and for some reason you weren't planning to go, Capcom will also make an "exciting announcement" at the Gyakuten Meets Orchestra orchestral concert in Tokyo this April. Matsukawa didn't say what the announcement would be, but come on -- it's Gyakuten Saiban 5.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney has been out long enough for the superfans (in the U.S.) to have gotten through the game, and for me to have finally made it to Gamestop to pick it up. So most of us who want to play the game have had time to become accustomed to the new cast.

There's no doubt that, although niche, the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series is beloved by many. Capcom had a great thing going for it with the first three games: a fun concept, compelling gameplay, and some ridiculous but lovable characters. After hearing that Capcom would be changing things around by introducing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, I started to get nervous. Why mess with a good thing and change a winning formula?

Innovation is necessary to keep any franchise alive, but at the expense of characters that fans have grown attached to, I wondered if it was worth it. Could Capcom really pull this off without alienating either longtime fans or curious newcomers? The task seemed daunting. Yet, if any series could pull a transition like this, it would be this one.

With this week's big release being Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, you can bet we're dying to sink our teeth into the game. Not only are we looking to see how the newbie attorney handles himself, but also how Capcom handled developing the latest iteration in the series specifically for the DS, instead of the GBA-to-DS porting that went on with previous installments. Of course, it's not that the porting was a bad thing; the Ace Attorney games are some of our most favorite of all time.

So will you be tackling some of Apollo's cases this weekend? We know we will.

With the release of the latest Ace Attorney game, those of us in North America finally get to see the new hero in action, Apollo Justice. And, now that the game has been out for a few days, some of the reviewing outlets have gotten the requisite amount of time in with the game.

How are the reviews? Generally positive, we're happy to report.

  • 1UP (85/100) says this game's writing is great: "The localization team at Capcom should be commended for writing dialogue that is genuinely funny. Basically, if you're a fan of the earlier Phoenix Wright games, you will laugh...a lot. Couple the comedy with Justice's engrossing story and you have a case that would be criminal not to take."
  • IGN (83/100) finds the game to be incredibly charming: "The gameplay and static looks of Apollo Justice are just as we've seen them before, and the music will be both familiar and new, but Apollo Justice retains a lot of the charm Phoenix Wright held before it, and adds to the series' legacy. What's old is new again, and damn good, too."
  • Nintendo Power (80/100) thinks the game is a perfect fit within the series: "With that said, the latest Ace Attorney game is an excellent continuation of the series, featuring more compelling mysteries to unravel and lots of memorable characters." [Mar 2008, p.86]

While we're sure many English-speaking, Ace Attorney-loving Europeans arranged to have the game imported already, the rest of you will be glad to know that Apollo Justice has been given a release date.

Europe can expect the game on May 9th, which is tantalizingly far away for fans, but we've seen worse than a three month delay. Take Trials and Tribulations for example -- where is that game?

Nintendo of Europe still doesn't list an official date for Phoenix Wright's third foray in the courtroom, and we haven't heard anything from Capcom, but the unofficial date of March 21st has popped up on some sites like GameSpot UK. While a March date is unlikely (as we probably would have heard something concrete by this point), let's hope it's correct so that non-importing Europeans can play their games in order.

It's a good week to be a DS gamer in pretty much any region. Europe is a possible exception, but we happen to think Paint by DS is a neat-looking product. Outside of Europe and its possibly compelling coloring game, quality abounds this week, with Capcom's Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney as the flagship release in the U.S. Whenever an Ace Attorney game comes out, it's a Big Deal in DS-land, and this one is especially noteworthy!

Japan is flooded with cool games this week, including Space Invaders Extreme, the remake, J.B. Harold Murder ClubPopulous DS, and even a new Harvest Moon. And Australia gets a shot at both Advance Wars and Cooking Mama 2! There's a pretty good chance you'll have something to buy this week.

As the picture above demonstrates, Camelot's We Love Golf will allow us to play a round as Apollo Justice, while other characters confirmed for the title include Chun Li (Street Fighter), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 3), and Arthur (Ghouls 'n Ghosts). We can't comprehend how anybody would not want to play golf as Apollo Justice, but if you're not a fan of the bequiffed lawyer (weirdo), then Capcom has set up a poll on its official blog to ask readers which characters they'd most like to see in the U.S and European versions of the game.

You can vote for one female and one male character, with Cammy (Street Fighter), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Rouge (Power Stone), Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), and Ashley Graham (Resident Evil) making up the female category.

Meanwhile, the male list consists of Frank West (Dead Rising), Balrog (Street Fighter), Guy (Final Fight), Ken (Street Fighter), Dhalsim (Street Fighter), and Captain Commando (from, uh, Captain Commando). And yes, we know of at least one person who will be sorely disappointed with the lack of Zangief in that selection.

If you visit this site often, you've probably come to realize that we're big fans of Phoenix Wright. Later this month, we'll be able to play the next installment in the Ace Attorney games, this time starring Apollo Justice. If you're as impatient as us, though, you might want to check out this interview at Siliconera, which reveals some more information about the title. Spencer Yip questions Apollo's product marketing manager, Colin Ferris, who manages to tease us even more about the game.

One thing Ferris was pretty clear on is that there are no plans to bring the series to the Wii. After playing Harvey Birdman, we think the adventure game would fit well on the console, as much as we love it on our handhelds. How about you guys, though? Folks at IGN and GameSpot got their hands on Apollo Justice this week, which means there are some interesting sets of hands-on impressions floating around ... and also means the potential for spoilers is increasing with every moment as we approach the release of the fourth game in the franchise. We'll be very general here, and if you just can't wait for every possible tidbit, head on over and read at your own risk.

Both outlets report that the new installment starts out in similar fashion to the others; that is, the first case is something of a tutorial that helps players find their way around the courtroom process and get to know their main character. Further, this game seems to live up to all the wackiness, fun, and wit of the previous games in the series ... something many may have worried about due to the new cast. Never fear, dedicated fans. It looks like Apollo Justice is set to be just as guilty a pleasure as his predecessor.

We didn't have much reason to doubt a rumor started by Capcom employees themselves, but official confirmation is always welcome. According to Capcom's blog, this totally metal Apollo Justice keychain will be available from GameStop as a preorder gift, and from Capcom's online store as a gift with both preorders and post-release-date orders of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. People who have already put in their preorder will receive one of these.

We were on the fence about whether to get the next installment of the completely excellent adventure game series. Now that we know there's a keychain involved, there's no question.

In anticipation of the English-language release of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Capcom has released an officially translated version of their Gyakuten Saiban 4 demo, which covers the beginning of the game, through the first cross-examination.

If you're trying to maintain a spoiler-free life before the release of the DS cartridge, steer clear, because this is a segment of the actual game, even if it is presented as a "mock trial." However, if you don't consider the first few minutes of the first case spoiler material, and if you want to see Winston Payne's new suit (which we think is even better than the haircut), you could find worse ways to blow a few minutes on the Internet than by playing some Apollo Justice.

We already knew that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the first batch of cases for Capcom's new lawyer, was coming in early 2008, and Capcom let us know exactly how early today. Phoenix's successor is going to make his debut on February 12 February 19. If you haven't been keeping up with series, you might be interested to learn that this is the first edition of the game built from the ground up for the DS.

If you want to get a sampling of the new gameplay, you'll be able to find a web demo at this site at some point this month. If you're the impatient sort, you can just check out this fan-made version here.

[Updated: Capcom's original press release mistakenly had the game releasing on the 12th and not the 19th.]

By sweet, though, we actually mean "really, really, horrible." Oh, snap.

Unlike the Super Smash Bros. Brawl preorder deal (which is over now), you won't be kicking yourself if you don't take part in this "sale." Still, we thought it was pretty funny of Wal-Mart to price a DS game (even if it is a game we really want) at $70. Clearly, walmart.com's headquarters have been taken over by an army of monkeys. Either that, or the company figured it had to make back the money that was lost on the Brawl preorder somehow. Even so, we feel that the same thing can be said about this Apollo Justice "deal" as was said about the Brawl one, with some slight modifications, of course:

"At $19.82 $69.82, this is likely the lowest highest you'll see this game priced for the next couple of years, so you would be a fool pretty smart to not immediately pounce on this. And you know how we feel about fools smart people -- we have no pity for them like them. None Really!"

Also, it's worth mentioning that Capcom officially confirmed a February 12th release date for Apollo Justice, which is a week earlier than the date that was originally rumored. We have no objections.

For how much we talk about Phoenix Wright and the Ace Attorney lineup of games here at DS Fanboy, you should already know this next tidbit of info involving upcoming game Apollo Justice. In case you don't, however, then here's your warning: spoiler alert!

In the newest game, Phoenix has given up on life and resorted to being a hobo. His cap, which is pictured above, is available as a pre-order bonus for those in Japan. Definitely beats that crummy Phoenix plush we got for pre-ordering Trials and Trbulations here. Hopefully, Capcom will treat Japanese gamers a bit better than they treated us.

A listing for Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice has surfaced at GameStop's online site, claiming the game would grace retail shelves on the 19th of February. Although the listing is hardly confirmed, we're crossing our fingers that this is the true release date.

We might have initially thought the game was coming too soon following Trials & Tribulations, but that isn't the case any longer. We want this game. And we want it now. Also, we wonder about possible pre-order gifts, although we won't be pre-ordering through Capcom directly, we assure you.

Tecmo's Swing Golf Pangya! 2nd Shot isn't the only game in town when it comes to playing cartoony golf with an avatar dressed as a video game character-- as long as that town is in Japan, and also one week in the future. For their Camelot-developed golf game We Love Golf, Capcom has made some classic Capcom attire available to the player. No, not Mega Man (as far as we know.)

Players will be able to hit the links (that's a golf term, right? "Hit the links"?) as Resident Evil 3's Jill Valentine, Ghouls 'n Ghosts's Arthur (in armor), Chun-Li, and the red-suited protagonist of the DS's Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Yesterday, we said that Capcom was releasing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney too quickly after Trials and Tribulations and the closely related Harvey Birdman game. But then we saw these English screenshots and our emotions took over. Get here as soon as you can, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney!

We just can't wait to play the thing and learn about all the over-the-top quirks of the new cast. Who cares if, once we're basically caught up with the Japanese release schedule, we'll have to wait like two years for the next game? We prefer our gratification instant.

According to a Capcom press release, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney will be released in the U.S. in early 2008. This fourth entry in the Ace Attorney series features a new protagonist, new characters, and more touch-screen integration than the previous three, since it's the first one to be made from the ground up with the DS in mind. But, of course, if you've read DS Fanboy for any number of seconds, you have no doubt absorbed all kinds of information about the Ace Attorney series.

The timing seems a little strange. The previous three Ace Attorneys were released in the fall, about one year apart. Why would they move it up to whatever unspecified period they're referring to as "early 2008?" With Harvey Birdman on the Wii out in January, that's a lot of rapid-fire lawyer-game releases. We guess they just couldn't HOLD IT any longer oh man, we're sorry.

The best thing in this video isn't hearing Apollo Justice's "Objection" for the first time, nor is it seeing the way he interacts with his mentor, Kristoph Gavin. It's not even the sight of a familiar friend. Oh, which reminds us-- this video contains people talking and things happening in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, so if you're absolutely dead set against hearing even the most cursory information about the plot, don't watch the video.

The best thing about this video is that it's more proof that an English version of the game is really, really on the way, and soon.
