The app touts a touch-navigated menu system and the ability to listen to music offline, which is a first for the service, but is otherwise unchanged from its various other iterations across Sony devices. There's still two levels of service at $3.99 and $9.99 monthly, with cross-platform "Music Sync" technology that keeps your various Sony devices pumpin' the same jams.

We'd love to have been a fly on the wall during the Music Unlimited naming meeting at Sony HQ: "We need a name that communicates the fact that our service provides people with music. But, like, a lot of music. There's so much music in our service, you guys."

"What about The Infinite Blackness of the Void of Horrible Space, With Music[TM]?"

"Johnson, you're fired. Turn in your unlimited coffee voucher on your way -- Johnson you're a genius."
Continue reading PSA: Sony's Music Unlimited service now on Vita

PSA: Sony's Music Unlimited service now on Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Mar 2012 08:00:00 EST. The app features area maps, hints from the developers regarding points of interest, an achievement checklist and a compendium of in-game resources and their effects. It also contains concept art, developer diaries and the game's soundtrack, six tracks of which are exclusive to the app.

The companion program even has a photo mode, which lets you take pictures of your friends eating and then make it look like they're eating in a dystopian ruin. Cell phones probably don't work in I Am Alive's post-apocalyptic future, but they do work in our pre-apocalyptic present, so why not take advantage of that while you can? If anything, you'll be able to impress all of your trendy hipster friends with a photo manipulation app they've never heard of.
I Am Alive receives free iOS companion app originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 01:00:00 EST. Square Enix has never released sales information for the iPhone version, but it must have found some justification in its pricing structure as the iPad version just launched for $17.99.

Now, we're not saying War of the Lions isn't worth almost 20 dollars, but for a game that isn't a Universal App, and is also available on PSN for a single sawbuck, it's kind of a tough pill to swallow.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions hits iPad for $18 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 20:45:00 EST. Early adopters can update their systems to firmware version 1.61, which adds a Maps application to the home screen, allows for video recording in the Photos application, and allows for any ratings you make in the PlayStation Store to appear on Facebook. Additionally, the Discoveries screen now lists up to 100 players, as well as the number of times they've been seen.

The Content Manager Assistant app has been updated, and is available now both as a Windows and Mac download. Even if you've got version 1.60 already, you should make the jump to 1.61, as Sony says there are some systemwide performance improvements too. The latest firmware can be downloaded on the console over Wi-Fi, or can be updated from a PC or Mac with the Content Manager Assistant.
PS Vita 1.61 adds Maps app, video recording, and other updates originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 22:30:00 EST. My Goddess and Galaxy Express 999.

Best Buy's CinemaNow ecosystem has more new releases to choose from, but its services require cash money. It's unclear whether all of the content on these two services will be available through the respective apps, or if some content will be restricted, like the YouTube and Hulu Plus apps. If our calculations are correct, Xbox Live only needs 2 more movie apps and 4 more internet radio apps before it becomes self aware.
XBL getting Crackle, CinemaNow apps originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 04 Feb 2012 18:30:00 EST. Granted, Rovio's February 14 release of Angry Birds for the social-networking site will be quite a bit different from the vitriolic bile we'll be spewing as a projection of our own debilitating loneliness, but both activities do involve throwing things and impassioned rants about how things didn't go as planned.

In addition to leaderboard support, the Facebook version of Rovio's darling will feature "higher quality animation" to take advantage of the game's full-screen capabilities. It will also include power-ups, which come in familiar bird flavors as well as more divine abilities, such as triggering earthquakes on command. Power-ups can either be earned in-game or purchased for $0.99, but you'll never be able to buy your way back into her heart. Please come back, Susan.
Angry Birds catapulting to Facebook on Valentine's Day originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 23:00:00 EST. Following the technical difficulties with the first streaming event for the UFC on Xbox Live app, Microsoft has come up with a consolation. Tomorrow's UFC 142 event will be free for those affected by the outages of UFC 141. All you need to do is sign into the app with the affected Gamertag. It should all work out this time ... we hope.

Users affected will also receive a free month of Xbox Live Gold service. "Our hope is that this gesture conveys our sincere apologies, and helps restore confidence in our customers and fans," a Microsoft spokesperson said. UFC 142 will air live from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at 10pm ET on Saturday, January 14.
UFC app outage nets users free UFC 142 and a month of Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 21:00:00 EST. A covert operative nestled deep inside the Sony booth at CES (also known as a regular guy with a cell phone) has produced two blurry-yet-insightful photos of what may very well be PlayMemories Studio, a video-editing suite for the PS3. Originally sent to our sister site Engadget, these photos (one more after the break) appear to show the user applying a slow-motion effect to stock footage of a child about to lose at Jenga.

According to a trademark filing for the title, PlayMemories Studio is "computer software for viewing, organizing and editing digital photos and videos." A Facebook page for the app has also been discovered, however there is no information there at this time. We'll know more about PlayMemories Studio (or whatever this is) once CES officially opens on Tuesday.
Continue reading PS3 video-editing app PlayMemories Studio potentially leaked ahead of CES

PS3 video-editing app PlayMemories Studio potentially leaked ahead of CES originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Jan 2012 16:35:00 EST. On Friday, UFC's latest pay-per-view event debuted, a pretty big deal for Microsoft. As the first live event for the new UFC Xbox 360 app, a lot hinged on Friday night's fight. According to BitMob's Dan Hsu, it didn't go so well.

He complained of constant crashes, weird issues involving video definition and the app bouncing around to different times in the broadcast at its own discretion, plus constant buffering throughout. Microsoft had sent out a whopping 30,000 promotional codes for the event, which ended up bringing down the house of cards. So Hsu contacted Microsoft to get some answers on his disappointment.

"The broadcast of UFC 141 through the UFC for Xbox LIVE application was hampered by technical issues appearing in the hours leading up to the fight," a spokesperson told BitMob. "Despite restoring service to some users during the course of UFC 141, there is a great deal of room for improvement. All 30,000 users who registered to view UFC 141 for free will be provided access to a future fight at no cost."

There's no timeline for the freebie, but "The gamertags of the 30,000 users who registered for UFC 141 are being safely kept on file for free access to a future UFC event, and we will have more updates to share in the near future," the spokesperson concluded. Let's just hope that's enough time for Microsoft to get the app working.
UFC 141 on Xbox Live glitchy, Microsoft promises to make good originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 20:00:00 EST. Batman is great at fighting crime, using gadgets and not killing people. He's not, however, that creative in naming things -- Bat cave, batmobile, batarang, batclaw, <strike>Batgirl</strike>. His wordsmith skills may be lacking, but this predictability makes naming the official Batman: Arkham City iOS app extremely easy. It's the Chiroptera app, obviously.

Fine, it's the bat app. Whatever you call it, the Arkham City official map app is a handy tool to help keep track of progress through the game, showing the locations of hundreds of Riddler trophies and item hotspots, and allowing users to mark off the ones they've collected. Developer Dorling Kindersley made a similar app extension for Dead Island. The bat app is available for the same price, $2.99, right now on iTunes.
Arkham City gets an official mammal-with-webbed-wings app for iOS originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Oct 2011 18:30:00 EST. I've been debating for some time whether or not it would be kosher to refer to VidRhythm, Harmonix's new iOS music-making application, as a "game." I suppose splitting hairs in this debate could lead to the retroactive de-gamification of classics like the MTV Music Generator, but the lack of points, or a win scenario, or any form of competition seems to disqualify VidRhythm from eligibility to be written about on this, our gaming blog.

But I'm going to do it anyway. Because while VidRhythm lacks many of those oh-so-important game components, it brings a hell of a lot of manic, hilarious fun to the table.

Portabliss: VidRhythm (iOS) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 13:40:00 EST. Is your 3DS Mii Plaza a lonely, vacant wasteland? Your large-headed avatars have depth, you know, and with depth comes feelings. Why not get them some company using Modojo's new 3DS Friend Code Finder app on Facebook? It's a simple enough tool: Just input your code, which every one of your Facebook friends who accesses the app will be able to see -- and vice versa, naturally.

It's a pretty neat application, not only because it saves you the trouble of asking each of your real-life cohorts what their code is individually, but because it provides you with a surprising catalog of everyone you know that owns the system. For instance, Mr. Jeffries, your fourth grade biology teacher? He's got one, and man, does that dude love him some Nintendogs.
Modojo launches 3DS Friend Code Finder app originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 23:00:00 EST. Regardless of what gender you may subscribe to, it seems that leg-based garments are getting tighter and tighter by the day. That doesn't leave much pocket space for gaming accoutrements like the Nintendo 3DS AR cards, leaving travelling gamers with one sad storage solution: fanny packs. This, friends, is how the world ends. Not with a bang, but with a sudden resurgence in fanny pack popularity.

Fortunately, Android phone owners can cut out this utterly humiliating middle man by grabbing Andrew Wilson's clever little app, which displays the cards included with the system. You could even use the app next to an actual card, creating two of the same 3D images at once. Imagine, if you will: Two Kirbys, eating each other at the same exact time. We're not sure how that's gonna turn out, but we wouldn't be surprised if it created a tiny, adorable black hole.
Amazon's officially dipped its toes into the cool, clear waters of Android software market, launching its own App Store earlier today. Folks can search for apps using the online retailer's familiar database, and can even find a sweet little early adopter bonus today: Rovio Mobile's (Amazon-exclusive) Angry Birds Rio, marked down from $0.99 to the considerably lower $0.00.

You might want to considering bookmarking that particular site for your future perusal -- according to a banner at the top of the page, Amazon's Android store will offer one paid app for free every day.
The Android platform is no stranger to emulators, but there aren't too many apps that possess as much polish as N64oid. It runs at a surprisingly stable framerate and, best of all, you can pair a Wiimote to the device for more precise controls. Attending PAX East 2011? There's an app for that. Proxima Labs' Conventionist, an app designed expressly for staying organized during conventions, has been updated with a guide to PAX East's panels, exhibitors and pretty much anything you'd need to know about the show.

The app for free for iOS and Android, and has some handy features, such as reminder messages (so you don't miss panels) and maps (so you know where they'll be). It sounds pretty indispensable. Might we suggest adding the Joystiq Blueberry Muffin Tops Breakfast once you've downloaded it?
PAX East guides added to free iOS and Android convention app originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 01:00:00 EST. We understand and appreciate the fact that we're your only source of important, relevant news and information -- but the launch of Rupert Murdoch's iPad-only newspaper The Daily is something that definitely deserves your attention. See, the publication requires an unprecedented in-App subscription to access; a feature that Apple has now enabled for developers of all apps, including iOS games.

The subscriptions are purchased in the same manner as in-app content, and publishers are free to set the price and length of subscription at whatever point they choose. Steve Jobs explained the revenue sharing system set in place for subscriptions in a press release, saying "when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing." He says Apple requires publishers offering special deals on their subscriptions to have those deals reflected in-app as well.

So, how about it, gang? Any apps or games on your iOS devices that you'd drop a steady stream of bucks to play? We're not crazy about the idea, but if that's what it takes to get some more new boxes in Cut the Rope, we could be persuaded.

App Store apps and games can now charge subscriptions originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 13:58:00 EST. We should clarify -- the new PS3 app lets you view and organize video from your Sony-branded digital camera, not the footage captured by the Sony cams hidden throughout your home. As you know, those are designed to detect the arrival of new, exciting games and then send notice of a new firmware update just as you're putting in the disc.

There's no need for a disc when accessing "Filmy," the sounds-like-a-cute-mascot video app that becomes available on the PlayStation Store today. Once downloaded and installed, it allows viewing of AVCHD-encoded video from any USB-connected Sony camera that supports the format. Videos can be searched quickly and organized into digests based on camera metadata (such as "Face Detection") or geographical tagging, if the camera has a GPS. If you've been anywhere remote and/or remotely interesting, you'll be able to find those clips marked on a fancy representation of our space-faring orb.

There's a free version of Filmy that allows full feature operation for fifteen minutes, but the less curtailed version will run you $5. You could probably earn that back by turning your camera on the bedroom, recording a spooky message written on a fogged-up mirror and then selling the whole thing to a Hollywood studio as "Abnormal Happenings."
Continue reading 'Filmy' PS3 app lets you view and organize video captured by Sony cams

'Filmy' PS3 app lets you view and organize video captured by Sony cams originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 23:20:00 EST. Launched earlier today, the Kongregate Arcade app for Android-based phones has been removed from the Android Market for reasons unknown. Joystiq received word from a GameStop and Kongregate representative that it had been pulled, along with the following statement:

As reported earlier today, the Kongregate Arcade app was launched on the Android Market and was enthusiastically received by the gaming community, receiving 4.5 out of 5 stars. Tens of thousands of users successfully downloaded the new app but, due to unknown reasons, Google has pulled it from the Market. Gamers wishing to experience Kongregate Arcade will be happy to learn it is now available for download at http://kongregate.com/android.
Additionally, Kongregate has updated its Twitter feed with word that it is "working with Google to restore access in the Market." We've contacted Google for comment and will update as soon as we hear back.

Update: Google has informed Joystiq that the app was in violation of the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement because the app itself was distributing other apps. However, there is nothing prohibiting Flash developers from making apps available on the market wrapped in an individual apk.
Kongregate Arcade removed from Android Market originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 20:30:00 EST. The Mac App Store, the OS X software distribution platform which was announced during Apple's late October press conference, has been stocking up on app submissions for over a month -- today, the company announced these apps will be available for Mac owners' perusal on January 6, 2011. We still have plenty of time to digest this news, because 2011 is still ... let's see ... three weeks away? Jeez. That's another year of our lives, siphoned away, like so many grains through the hourglass' unforgivingly wide channel.
There's no telling how strong of a contender the new storefront will be in the gaming space -- especially now that Steam is catering to Mac users. However, considering developers still be making that mad money on the iOS App Store, the new platform should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Mac App Store opens its doors on January 6 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 19:30:00 EST. Do not adjust your computer monitors, friends -- you might think they're acting up, considering how many times the words "Angry Birds" are about to be repeated after the jump. It's not a deja vu-like glitch in the Matrix; Rovio's poultry-flinging casual game made its way into nearly every category of Apple's recently released rankings for the most popular iOS games of the year. These lists are split into the most downloaded free apps, top selling paid apps and top grossing paid apps on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad -- check them all out after the jump.

Unfortunately, these lists are ranked alphabetically instead of by actual downloads, but considering some of the repeated victors include Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled 2+ Blitz and Words with Friends, we think we can accurately fudge the numbers: They were all downloaded a spajillion times.
Continue reading Apple reveals 2010's most popular iOS games

Apple reveals 2010's most popular iOS games originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 Dec 2010 11:30:00 EST. Here's a hypothetical situation you or someone you know has probably experienced at some point in your life: You and a friend are out at a restaurant or bar, and Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" comes on the radio. You remark how this is one of your favorite Rock Band songs, but your friend replies that this song, criminally, is not part of the Rock Band catalog. You argue about this point all night, ruining your dinner, drinks and, ultimately, friendship.

There's another way -- a better way, friends. A new, unofficial and free iPhone tool from developer Three Brothers Apps titled "RB Song List" lets you scan through the game's downloadable catalog on the go. Using this app, you could have resolved this hypothetical argument in seconds, and then spent the rest of the night talking about why the hell "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" isn't available on the Rock Band Store.
Unofficial Rock Band catalog search app arrives on iPhone originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 15:30:00 EST. Are you in the process of packing the items necessary for survival during your upcoming trip to the Penny Arcade Expo? You might want to consider adding Proxima Labs' "The Conventionist" to your list. The free iPhone app includes a full, interactive schedule for each day of the expo, a map of the convention center and the ability to browse through both while offline. Which is fortunate, since large crowds of tech-savvy people have a tendency to wreck your phone's 3G functionality.

Best of all, the app can be updated to provide support for other conventions as well. We sure hope the the 2010 Des Moines Apple Butter Festival makes the cut! We always get lost between the cider mill and the ol' birch tree.
Grab the free Conventionist app, perfect for PAX navigation originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 00:00:00 EST. There are two ways in which your acquaintances will likely be impressed should you load up Zenitum's Space InvadAR app on your Android-equipped device:

Using a picture of the Earth, it creates a pretty neat augmented reality overlay which forces you to defend the planet from a neverending onslaught of circling extraterrestrials. Line up your shot using your mobile device's camera, and drop your favorite Independence Day quote as you blast aliens from the sky.

The app itself costs $25, so your friends should be wowed by your apparently vast amounts of expendable income.

Check out a video of the pricey application after the jump.
Continue reading Impress your friends with Space InvadAR Android app

Impress your friends with Space InvadAR Android app originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 00:00:00 EST. You know how you love to play Boggle but hate having to buy note pads all of the time? Well, if you've got yourself an iPad, you may be interested to know that EA has released Boggle onto the App store. Simply boot up the game, give your iPad a shake and you're good to go on a word hunt.

The game features three different modes of play: Challenge, Advanced and Self-Score. There's even iTunes support, allowing you to control the soundtrack of misery for your family while you display your wordsmith skills during the annual Thanksgiving Boggle Tournament. We suggest something really classy, like Sagat's "Funk Dat."
Just because you weren't already drowning in Prince of Persia-based media outings, Ubisoft has decided to bring the platforming, swordfighting heir apparent to the App Store. According to IGN, Prince of Persia Retro, a port of the original 1989 version of Jordan Mechner's classic , will be available to purchase on your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad "any moment now." No mention was made of the game's price -- we've contacted Ubisoft to divine that ever-important detail.

Though we already own the original Prince of Persia on a handful of different platforms, we wouldn't mind having him on our cellular device. Mind you, our fellow bus patrons might be frightened by our crude outbursts every time we accidentally take a short hop onto a long spike.
Prince of Persia Retro leaping onto App Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 May 2010 13:02:00 EST. Are you ready to watch some videos of the most unnecessary iPhone modification in the device's recorded history? Check out the two clips posted past the jump to see YouTube user SoundKite's Frankenstein-esque tech mash-up, in which he adheres a Microvision ShowWX laser projector to an iPhone 3GS. While playing a game which uses the iPhone's compass (such as Sky Siege), the projector gives the illusion of 360-degree immersion.

It looks awfully neat, though we're not sure how many practical applications it actually has. Though it would be pretty great to hijack a movie theater, and force its patrons to witness our sick Tilt to Live skills.
Continue reading Laser projector stuck to iPhone for 360 degree gaming

Laser projector stuck to iPhone for 360 degree gaming originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 09 May 2010 15:30:00 EST.
The app allows users to manage their rental queues, check out trailers and browse game news. Finally, you can watch GameFly inexplicably ship the game at the bottom of your list on the go! GameCenter is available now on the Android Market.
GameFly releases GameCenter app for Android originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 18:30:00 EST. When the GameFly GameCenter mobile app launched last October, its creators promised to eventually bring its functionality into parity with the main site's user interface. Thanks to a recent update through the App Store, that future has been realized. GameCenter has been tweaked to allow GameFly subscribers to add titles to (or remove titles from) their GameQs while out and about.

A handful of additional UI changes have also been made to streamline the game-renting process. You can check out the app for free using the download link below.
Yes, last year's surprise smash hit novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, is getting the video game adaptation treatment. Prolific App developer Freeverse, creators of Top Gun, Flick Bowling, and like, a thousand other games, is turning the mash-up book into an iPhone title. The game, which will be a 2.5D action title featuring 19th century aristocrats and ... zombies, is due out in the next few weeks. (We're assuming Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters won't be far behind.)

Few details about the game have been revealed, but fighting hordes of zombies with makeshift weapons will almost certainly be part of the equation. As will courtship. And manners.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and an iPhone game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 13:00:00 EST. Were you aware that you're about lose all of your free time, ever, regardless of what your actual physical location in the world might be? Well, you might be spared if you don't possess an iPhone, as that's the platform targeted by the sequel to the surprisingly deep, Diablo-esque RPG Zenonia.

Developer Gamevil recently informed us that Zenonia 2 will be submitted to Apple for App-roval "by the end of this week," whetting our appetite with a new (admittedly sorta creepy) trailer. With tons of different items and equipment, new classes and customizable UI, it looks like it will fix the problems we encountered with its predecessor. Except, of course, the problem of how we won't be able to do anything else but play Zenonia 2 in public situations.
Continue reading Old school iPhone RPG Zenonia 2 to be submitted to Apple this week

Old school iPhone RPG Zenonia 2 to be submitted to Apple this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 17:25:00 EST.
Lots of the celebrities at last night's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity benefit tournament didn't know much about gaming, but Greg Grunberg is the exception. Even if he can't dive deep into the differences between next-gen shooters, he at least knows the audience, having appeared on Lost and Alias and controlled minds as Matt Parkman on Heroes. He was at the benefit in West Hollywood promoting the Epilepsy Foundation (his son deals with epileptic seizures, and Grunberg has done some advocacy work on his own as well), and right before he sat down to play BFBC2 alongside Chad Ochocinco and Marshall Faulk, he sat down to chat with us.
Read on to hear about what Grunny is doing for Halo: Reach, his favorite iPhone games and why he's so sure there should be one more full season of Heroes.

Continue reading Interview: Greg Grunberg at the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity challenge

Interview: Greg Grunberg at the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity challenge originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. We're totally sold on the idea of playing Final Fantasy I and II on the iPhone -- and the gameplay-infused trailer posted above just solidifies our desire. However, as faithful as this adaptation looks, we're worried about the platform itself derailing the games' narrative. For example: You're facing off against Chaos; your four-hero outfit has been honed into a lethal fighting force; the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As your stock of HP dwindles, you summon all your strength for one last --
With a miniscule $2.50 price tag and bluetooth support, which allows you to control the emulator with a Wii remote, it would be a pretty great deal. If, you know, it didn't run at a handful of frames per second.

Click to see all of Faith's roof-hopping antics.

So, hypothetical situation. You're perched on the roof of a skyscraper, peering across a lengthy chasm to the adjacent building, where your destination lies. You're suddenly overcome with doubt and uncertainty! If only you had some sort of portable parkour training manual which could show you the proper timing and form for such a jump. Fortunately, your hypothetical needs are being tended to. According to a recent EA press release, the high-flying, first-person adventure, Mirror's Edge, will soon land on iPhones and iPod Touches.

A few screenshots for the title (which is due out in January) show that while it will be in 3D, we'll be operating from a side-scrolling perspective rather than being stuck within Faith's head.
EA Mobile certainly hopes your fascination with crafting words from letter-filled grids on your iPhone hasn't waned -- the developer recently released a port of Hasbro's Boggle onto the App Store. Though it lacks Word Scramble's robust multiplayer system (and free-ness), it does possess one feature that justifies its $2.99 price tag: Achievements. Lots of achievements. Seriously, wordsmithing hasn't been this rewarding since you won those tickets to Dollywood in your fourth grade spelling bee.

We take it back. This is way more rewarding than that.
We talk about homebrew a lot here at Wii Fanboy. We love the community and we love the cool things they're always cooking up. Some things look like they require at least some technical knowledge, some things look like they require absolutely none. What we'd like to know is how many of you enjoy the apps and cool things the homebrew community has come up with. So, head past the break and take part in our poll!
Continue reading Wii Fanboy Poll: Do you homebrew?

Wii Fanboy Poll: Do you homebrew? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 21:19:00 EST. You're already two hundred minutes over your monthly limit and you just have to tell your friend the latest news? Well, practical solutions include borrowing another friend's cell phone and/or displaying a modicum of patience, but we never were much for practical around here.

For those with homebrew capabilities, a new VoIP app has been written by JSR. It's still in the testing phase, but since we're too stupid to actually code anything, this is how we get those "we're contributing!" fuzzy feelings. Do what you can, we say, and if you also want to shout at your buddy through a DS, all the better. To most, however, the prospect of "hacking" the DS is "scary", and despite some of the easier methods out there, it still seemed a little much.

Well, we no longer think it could get any easier. The newest device to come out of haX0r-land, the sillily named DS-Xtreme, is nothing more than a DS cartridge. It works as a simple mass-storage device ... simply move the applications or files to the cartridge using a USB connection, and poof, instant homebrew. It comes with a built in MP3-playback app, and it has two bitchin' LEDs for good measure (check out the embedded videos after the jump). The downside? It only contains 512 MB of memory, and it can't run anything built for the Game Boy Advance. Still, for the fence-sitters out there, this might be enough to push you over the edge. Check it out.

[Sillily is so a word.]

[Thanks, Gordon!]
The easiest homebrew solution yet originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 15:40:00 EST.
