Having unlocked and equipped one of the various Halo: Reach bonus Avatar helmets, you may have found your plainclothes Xbox Live persona looking rather uncoordinated. You can now complete the Noble look by purchasing any of the five armor outfits for $5. So much for all those Reach credits!
Continue reading Halo: Reach Avatar armor now on Xbox Marketplace

Halo: Reach Avatar armor now on Xbox Marketplace originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 15:40:00 EST. It probably won't surprise you to learn that Halo: Reach will offer its players a wide assortment of methods of brutalizing one another. These methods were recently revealed in the latest Bungie update, which heated anticipators of the upcoming shooter should go read immediately.

Said update reveals a new "Armor Abilities" system, in which temporary bonuses which used to appear on the battleground are now ingrained into pre-fabricated loadouts. For instance, the Active Camo power-up is now tied to a load-out. An Ability called "Armor Lock" makes you temporarily invincible (and stationary), deflecting any shots, and wrecking the shop of any vehicle attempting to run you over. Also, our beloved jet pack falls into this category, rendering all other Armor Abilities completely meaningless.

Also revealed in the update is a handful of new weapons and intriguing new gameplay mechanics -- including the announcement that the Covenant Elite is physically superior to the Spartan, which will prevent them from playing against one another in some gametypes. That's ... that's speciesist, Bungie.
Bungie talks Halo: Reach armor, weapons and jet packs originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. A post on the Bioware forums has revealed that two new bits of DLC will be coming to Mass Effect 2's Cerberus Network tomorrow, February 9. Players will be able to download both a new set of armor and a new shotgun for free via the game's DLC pipe. The Cerberus Armor ups heavy weapon ammo capacity, shields, and health by 10 percent each, and the M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun is "a longer-range shotgun with armor-piercing loads" that "also violates several intergalactic weapons treaties."

But those "treaties" were never ratified by the Citadel Council anyway, so who cares? The new DLC should be released by 2pm ET, so you can start ganking with the new space shotty then.

If you're in the habit of carrying your DS in a pocket or in a bag, you've probably considered some sort of slim case or armor, if you don't have one already. Sure, the DS is pretty sturdy overall, but do you want to risk those hinges or shoulder buttons? Better safe than sorry, right? If, like us, you're interested in protecting your handheld, you might want to check out the above armor, the Monaco aluminum case.

We spent a couple of days banging the slim-fitting case around and testing its functionality, and have mostly good news to report.

We looked for something unrelated to Halo for our video pick, but eventually just learned to stop worrying and love the bomb. This Spike TV GameHead clip shows Halo fan, Devin White's rough process in creating Master Chief armor. (We'd call it cosplay, but that's like calling G.I. Joe a doll.) White casts molds from his clay sculptures to create plastic, glistening armor and helmets.

The race is on to hollow-out the Legendary box into a small, pet-wearable helmet. The man responsible for inventing the bear-proof suit has developed, in his own words, the "first ballistic, full exoskeleton body suit of armor."

Weighing just 18 kilograms (40 pounds), Hurtubise believes the Trojan will be comfortable to wear in the field (he wore it for a 4-hour drive); not to mention protective. An empty suit has withstood bullets fired from an elephant gun -- and Hurtubise is more than ready to perform a live test. ""Bring it on," he says. In addition to armor, made from high-impact plastic lined with ceramic bullet protection over ballistic foam, the suit features storage for morphine, salt, a knife, and emergency light. Plus, a recording device, pepper-spray gun, and detachable (and swallowable) transponder are built into the forearms. There's also an in-suit fresh-air system, drinking tube (attached to back-mounted canteen), laser pointer, and some hip LED face lights.

Hurtubise has said that he drew inspiration for the suit from Star Wars, RoboCop, Batman, and indeed video games. He believes that Trojan suits can be produced for roughly $2,000 a pop and is actively seeking potential buyers, including military and police units. Anyone wanna pool resources and go in on a couple?

[Via Engadget]
Real-life Halo suit ready for deployment? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Jan 2007 16:25:00 EST. Troy James Hurtubise, the man behind Project Grizzly (the guy made a bear proof suit, someone call Stephen Colbert), has created a full body protective exoskeleton in the hopes of selling them to the Canadian and American military. Despite the obvious visual similarities, the technical similarities are downright uncanny. The suit is made of a ceramic lined plastic over ballistic foam. Included in the suit: emergency morphine and salt, flashlight, pepper spray gun, recording device, transponder, and clock. In the helmet: solar powered air system, water hose attached to back mounted canteen, laser pointer, and LEDs around the face. The damned thing even has magnetic holsters. Not only that, but Hurtubise even calls it "The Trojan." Come on, man!

The entire suit weights 18 kilograms, and reportedly costs $2000. Okay, we've seen some nice Halo costumes before, but this one wins. Sorry everyone, the contest is over. See a full body pic after the jump.
Continue reading Meet the first real Halo Spartan

Meet the first real Halo Spartan originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Jan 2007 10:45:00 EST. This is undeniable; never before has a video game controller come packaged with such sheer potential for mayhem and insanity. With all that bat-swinging sword-slashing gun-firing nonsense, a few skulls are sure to crack ... and despite Nintendo best efforts (read: a wrist strap), some safety freaks might need a little extra come these holidays.

Worry no more! Some recently leaked shots of some warehouse somewhere (actually, it's a CompUSA storage facility) shows off some nice controller "gloves" in a multitude of colors (pictures after the break). More intriguing, but sadly without images, is the news that Pelican will be manufacturing a "Nerf Wii Remote" and a "Nerf Nunchuk Controller Wii", as listed on amazon.com. Oh, how we long for the squishy days of yore!

[Thanks, Ali!]
Continue reading Because your Wiimote needs armor

Because your Wiimote needs armor originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Oct 2006 08:00:00 EST.
