Between his leading man role and the film's description - "a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar ... [is] sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts" - it sounded to many like Fassbender would be taking up the role of Desmond Miles, franchise leading man. Not so fast, says Ubisoft.

"Fassbender will play the lead role, but it's too soon to say exactly which character that will be," a Ubi rep told us. Though all signs point to Fassbender playing Miles, the various media surrounding the Assassin's Creed franchise has shied away from focusing on the modern American assassin. Comic book series "The Fall" instead follows Daniel Cross, a Templar sleeper agent, through his family history in the Russian Revolution and beyond. Assassin's Creed: Lineage similarly focused on a backstory - Assassin's Creed 2 protagonist Ezio Auditore's father, Giovanni Auditore - rather than on Desmond.

"The storyline isn't bound by a certain era or even a set of characters," the Ubi rep added. "That kind of freedom gives us great flexibility in creating the movie." Which isn't to say that the film will be a Uwe Boll-esque takeoff on the game series. Like all things Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft is treading carefully so as not to anger longtime fans. "We're also taking the responsibility of maintaining fidelity with the overall story and brand very seriously," the rep said.

There's no planned launch window for the Assassin's Creed film, but Ubisoft Motion Pictures is maintaining creative control over the whole process. Michael Fassbender's DMC Film is collaborating with UMP, but Ubi retains rights to who's directing and who's writing the script.
Fassbender's Assassin's Creed character not necessarily Desmond originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2012 15:20:00 EST. It will also include the game, but when you have an encyclopedia and some comic books, what self-respecting nerd needs video games?

The Ubiworkshop Edition is for Xbox 360 and PS3 and costs $100 in a special pre-order price, valid through July 4, and $110 following that completely random day, exclusively on Ubiworkshop. Ubisoft promises this edition includes more than 500 pages of narrative content: The encyclopedia alone runs $50 and each comic is $20 separately on Ubiworkshop, so on top of a $60 game, this edition is a steal.
Assassin's Creed 3 Ubiworkshop Edition has 500 pages for $100 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2012 12:30:00 EST. Ubisoft has collected the three issues of the Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic book into a trade paperback, which it's calling the "Deluxe Edition." Even if you've already read The Fall, Ubisoft wants to persuade you to buy this, even if only to get you ready to buy the next series, The Chain. The book has a new ten-page epilogue meant to bridge the story between The Fall and The Chain, by Karl Kerschl and Cameron Stewart.

If you only feel like reading one word, and want it on your chest instead of inside a book, UbiWorkshop has something for you as well. The store is now offering t-shirts with a circa-1980s Ubisoft logo, devised by people who were apparently way into the MTV aesthetic.
Assassin's Creed The Fall Deluxe Edition, retro Ubi shirts on UbiWorkshop originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 22:40:00 EST. The third issue of Assassin's Creed: The Fall concludes the story arc and is now available in stores and on Ubisoft's website for $5. What will become of Daniel Cross? And of the results of the Tunguska event? We're not telling! We do have a pretty image from it after the break for you, though.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic issue three is out

Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic issue three is out originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 20:30:00 EST. Outside of the comic's early 20th century Russia setting and the main character's name, little information has been released on the forthcoming Assassin's Creed comic, Assassin's Creed: The Fall; however, a developer diary released today details the comic's narrative, setting, main character, and how he fits into the franchise's overall timeline. Nikolai Orelov will be leaping from Russian rooftops and landing his (likely freezing cold) twin blades into the necks of important men like Tsar Alexander III.
Perhaps most interesting about the dev diary is the comic team's tease at the end that their story could find its way into a future Assassin's Creed title. Though we stand by our desire for a post-Civil War, Reconstruction Era Assassin's Creed game, one set in the Russian revolution doesn't sound too shabby either.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic book detailed in dev diary

Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic book detailed in dev diary originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Oct 2010 00:00:00 EST. The Assassin's Creed comic project revealed last month now has an official release date. WildStorm's Assassin's Creed: The Fall will land <strike>in a pile of hay</strike> on store shelves starting November 10, just a few days before the retail debut of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The Fall takes place in late 19th century Russia and follows the exploits of the assassin Nikolai Orelov as he seeks to snatch "an artifact of immense power" from the Templars. It also promises a "climactic and violent showdown with the ruthless Tsar Alexander III aboard a speeding train!"
