Beiswenger says his novel discusses "assassinations" and has "spiritual and biblical tones" also found in Assassin's Creed. And then there's the battle between good and evil that Beiswenger says Assassin's Creed stole right from the pages of Link.

Beiswenger is suing Gametrailers for the Assassin's Creed trailers that he says infringe on the same Link copyright. There are 11 counts against Ubisoft and Gametrailers in total, and only most of them made us laugh.

Beiswenger is seeking up to $5.25 million in damages and a cessation of further copyright infringement. We're pretty sure that second part is already happening, so perhaps Beiswenger will get something out of all this paperwork after all.
Ubisoft, Gametrailers sued in Assassin's Creed copyright infringement case originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST. Ubisoft worked hard to make Ezio project such a style in the Assassin's Creed titles, and is so confident in its wardrobe choices that it's let Square Enix throw Ezio's classic hood and straps on Noel in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Surely the layered, butchy furs and armor will remain as masculine with a smooth-skinned, pouty man underneath. Surely.

The Ezio outfit is available now on Xbox Live for $3 (240 MS Points), and tomorrow on PSN. Well, if you fall within that very niche category of people, a current promotion over at Amazon may be relevant to your needs.

Assassin's Creed, a few Splinter Cells and Far Cry 2 are just a few of the titles you can nab for half a sawbuck -- without that pesky Ubisoft DRM. The title is being developed by Ubisoft and GREE. In the same breath, GREE is teaming up with Gameloft on Gang Domination, which will be available on various smartphone devices this coming June.

So, what's GREE? Beyond being a company with way too much money, it's a mobile publisher/platform that's huge in Japan and is moving into the global marketplace, launching the GREE Platform in the second quarter of 2012. We warned you yesterday, so if you picked up a copy of Assassin's Creed: Revelations yesterday afternoon and it wasn't severely discounted, that's kinda on you, dawg. Anyway, Amazon is holding a one-day-only sale on everything Assassin's Creed, from the first game all the way through to Ezio's closing act. That means Revelations for $36 (40 percent off), Brotherhood for $20 (that's half off), and AC1 and 2 for $15 a pop (pop, pop).

The PC versions offer similar discounts, though the DS and PSP games aren't discounted at all. Then again, let's not kid ourselves, you're really just looking for the major releases, aren't you? The level of synergy achieved by the Assassin's Creed franchise is pretty impressive. If you can think of it, odds are it's out there: books, comics, animated shorts and now, a TCG.

Assassin's Creed Recollection is mostly a real-time trading card game that pits two players against each other as they vie to control territory in various cities and towns across Europe. But what separates Recollection from something like Magic: The Gathering is the real-time clock that's always ticking down.
Namco has posted a very long video discussing the features in Soulcalibur 5, complete with plenty of footage of everyone's favorite assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. There's also a lot of talking to get through, so you may want to skip to 26:55 (as in the twenty-six minute mark) to get to the in-game action. Oh, and yes, Ezio brought his hidden gun.

Siliconera notes that the video discusses the game's customization systems. Adjusting a character's physique, for example, could allow for longer reach. Furthermore, Namco does have plans for downloadable content, though the developers weren't ready to discuss whether those plans include more characters. We've still got our fingers crossed for Spawn making a glorious comeback.
Ezio brings a hidden gun to a knife fight in Soulcalibur 5 footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 11:55:00 EST. Ubisoft is adding yet another Assassin's Creed title to its stable of iOS releases. Unveiled last night in San Francisco during an Ubisoft event, Assassin's Creed: Recollection is a melange of art exploration and real-time strategy, employing "key characters and locations" from across the entire AC franchise.

How does it work, exactly? We're just as curious as you are, as the PR only vaguely explains the RTS elements as a stand-in for "political battles" raging throughout the world of Assassin's Creed. We'll undoubtedly learn more soon, though, as Recollection is due to launch "before the end of the calendar year."
Still no word on whether Sony has managed to finalize its buzz-generating deal with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to create a movie franchise based on the adventures of Desmond and friends, but it looks as though the entertainment megalith is feeling pretty good about the situation, based on a massive list of registered web domains unearthed by Fusible.

The 16 domains in question were registered by Sony Pictures on October 20, a day before news of the potential partnership found its way to the blogosphere via Variety. While indicative of Sony's confidence in the deal, purchasing the domains will prove to be a shrewd business move either way: Even if things do fall through, Sony will be able to eventually sell the domains for a phat wad.
Sony registers a slew of Assassin's Creed movie domains originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 20:30:00 EST. In true assassin fashion (fasshasshin), a new Assassin's Creed game has struck the App Store with no warning. Assassin's Creed: Multiplayer Rearmed is a sequel to Assassin's Creed II Multiplayer, an iPhone game that seemingly acted as a test bed for Assassin Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer.

Rearmed allows players to control "personas from both Brotherhood and Revelations," sneaking through and killing friends in 4-player online, single player, or one-on-one Bluetooth modes. This game is currently not on the US App Store; IGN spotted it on Canada's.

Assassin's Creed II Multiplayer, by the way, has disappeared from the App Store, allowing Ubisoft to pretend that Brotherhood invented the multiplayer, and that this is an offshoot of that console game. "Assassin's Creed innovative multiplayer is now mobile!" Which is how it started!
New multiplayer Assassin's Creed launching on iOS originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 12:55:00 EST. The rumors are true! Assassin's Creed: Revelations protagonist Ezio Auditore de Firenze is the secret guest character in Soulcalibur V, the latest trailer reveals, and it looks like he's coming packed with all of his trusty pointy objects. And a crossbow!
Namco Bandai also revealed a January 31, 2012 launch date for Soulcalbur V, and handed over the above trailer. One of the rare video game properties that we think could make a pretty good movie seems to be moving forward. Variety reports that Sony is close to inking a deal with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to create a film franchise based on the Assassin's Creed series. It's reportedly the climax of a months-long bidding war between Sony and other studios like Universal.

With Ubisoft's policy of maintaining creative control over films based on its games, it's a project we're ... if not excited for, certainly cautiously optimistic about. Our one request? Make Desmond, Altair and Ezio a family of art thieves. After that it's all -- as they say in the biz -- movie gravy.
Report: Ubisoft close to Assassin's Creed film deal with Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 11:30:00 EST. The picture above was provided to us by an anonymous tipster, which we're told comes from a beta version of the upcoming Soulcalibur 5 appearing at recent fighting game tournament. If this shot is real, Assassin's Creed protagonist Ezio Auditore de Firenze will be a playable character in Soul Calibur 5, set to launch next year.

Unfortunately, we don't have confirmation just yet, and there's no information about whether Ezio is limited to a certain version of the game, or available to anyone playing it. But one thing is for sure: The Hidden Blade would look pretty nice decked out with Soul Edge finery.

Rumor: Assassin's Creed protagonist Ezio coming to Soulcalibur 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 20:37:00 EST. As if anyone needed yet another reason to pick up Assassin's Creed: Revelations at launch, Ubisoft has just announced that the initial shipment of the PS3 version of their time-jumping assassination simulator will also include the original Assassin's Creed.

Seeing as the Assassin's Creed mythos are fairly intricate, convoluted and span several centuries, playing through the original will provide a much needed refresher course for those of us who have clocked more than a few hours in the Animus. At this point, we're not even sure who we are anymore.

[Update: We reached out to Ubisoft to ask if the 2007 pre-Trophy Assassin's Creed would be updated to support the digital baubles, and a Ubi rep replied, "There will be no trophy support for the original Assassin's Creed." Sorry, Trophy collectors.]
Continue reading Day one copies of Assassin's Creed: Revelations on PS3 to include the original Assassin's Creed

Day one copies of Assassin's Creed: Revelations on PS3 to include the original Assassin's Creed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:10:00 EST. Ubisoft is coming out strong in support of the PlayStation Vita, because it's a video game system and that's what Ubisoft does. In advance of Sony's Gamescom presser today, the company announced development of six titles for the handheld, including an Asphalt racing game, Assassin's Creed, Dungeon Hunter Alliance (above), Rayman Origins, and Michael Jackson: The Experience.

Perhaps most exciting, the PSP launch standout Lumines is returning on PlayStation Vita. Along with the announcement, Ubisoft shared screens of Rayman, Asphalt, and Dungeon Hunter. No dates were provided for any of these, but expect at least a few of them at the system's launch, because, again, that's what Ubisoft does.

Gallery: Ubisoft (PlayStation Vita)

Ubisoft announces development of six Vita games, including Assassin's Creed and Lumines originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 13:25:00 EST. In an interview with the Guardian, Assassin's Creed creative director Alexandre Amancio explains Ubisoft's mindset when creating Revelations and the caution his team is taking with Altair, Ezio, Desmond and their combined Body Mass Index.

"Well, Assassin's Creed has been going since 2007 -- the narrative is very rich and complex, so to avoid collapsing under the weight of our own mythology we needed to wrap up a few mysteries and set things up for what is to come. That's what this game is about: we're giving players some answers from Assassin's 2 and Brotherhood, we're completing the destiny of Altair, and we're tying it in to what's coming in 2012. And obviously, our over-arching storyline has to do with the end of the world in 2012 - we need to set up everything for the conclusion of that narrative. In this game, you'll get to understand why Ezio is so important and how his destiny his aligned to Altair's and to Desmond's."

It appears Amancio is focused on completing the first arc of the Assassin's Creed series with an emphasis on character development and clarifying the franchise's future, which can't be very vast considering he's counting on the world to end next year.
Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed: Revelations will be, well, revealing originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 20:30:00 EST. We may not know what the Wii U Assassin's Creed project will be, but at least we know what it won't be. According to Ubisoft head Yves Guillemot, it won't be Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

In an interview with Swedish site AftonBladet.se, Guillemot noted that the announced Wii U Assassin's Creed title is "not Revelations," but something for "the future." Of course, Guillemot's comments don't rule out the possibility of a Revelations port sometime in, you know, "the future."

The executive wouldn't confirm whether or not the currently announced AC title would be Assassin's Creed 3. For our part, we're imagining something like Raving Rabbids, only with hidden blades. In response to our own inquiries, a Ubisoft representative told Joystiq that the company doesn't have "any new information" regarding the Wii U Assassin's Creed project.
Assassin's Creed Wii U title isn't Revelations originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 14:40:00 EST. After just barely revealing that an Assassin's Creed title is in the works for Nintendo's Wii U, Ubisoft reps took to the Nintendo roundtable this evening and spoke to some of the features we'll see in the still untitled game (we're calling it "Assassin's Cwiihd"). Well, okay, first Ubisoft wanted to talk about the console itself. First and foremost, the Wii U has "powerful multi-core architecture" which allows Ubisoft to port its engines and assets directly over. And if you're anything like us, you're all about graphical shaders -- you'll be happy to know, then, that the Wii U is totally capable of handling that.

Beyond that, the game will, like previous AC titles, have the usual Eagle Vision sense ability. Specific to the Wii U, however, is an interactive map and database -- presumably for use with the WiiPad -- as well as some form of "alternative" puzzle solving. Ubi wouldn't confirm whether the title will be Assassin's Creed 3 or a Wii U version of Revelations or something else entirely, but you can bet we'll be hounding them for answers as the week progresses.
Wii U Assassin's Creed details loosed at Nintendo roundtable originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 22:16:00 EST. Beyond the news today that Ubisoft is bringing Assassin's Creed to Nintendo's Wii U, the French publisher also announced a handful of other titles currently in development for next year's console. Among the list of established IPs -- Assassin's Creed, Rabbids, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online -- Ubisoft also announced a "revolutionary first-person shooter for the hardcore audience."

Moreover, the shooter is being developed "exclusively" for the Wii U. Perhaps you're not too into shooters? The company is also working on a "multi-sports game" with family applications. A ... awesome? Anyway, while none of the games will be playable at E3 this year, Ghost Recon Online will be shown off on the show floor, so we'll be sure to take a peek at our earliest convenience.
Ubisoft developing 'hardcore FPS' exclusively for Wii U, four other titles revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 13:44:00 EST. Who would have thought that one of the most educational games of the year would be CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 2? It's got a thing or two to teach us all about the (awesome) perils of Ezio's trademark maneuver in Assassin's Creed 2: The Leap of Faith. Perhaps all that "playing" of your favorite Ubisoft games was getting tiresome? The French game publisher's film arm, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, told Variety this week that it's working to adapt three of Ubisoft's biggest properties -- Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon -- into "3D features," confirming speculative plans that appeared in a consumer survey last month. UMP head Jean-Julien Baronnet explained that his division "has been working with the games' producers and Ubisoft's marketing team to identify the DNA of each game and come up with storylines that are consistent." He also noted that the group's plans have garnered plenty of interest "from US studios and screenwriters."

Further, senior VP of international marketing and distribution Jean de Rivieres promises a script for at least one of the projects "by the end of the year." He and two other UMP execs will be taking a trip to Los Angeles next month in order to broker deals with studios and agents, Rivieres added.

In addition to the trio of feature projects, the studio is reportedly developing a 3D, CGI animated series based on the Rabbids property and named after the Raving Rabbids game series. It's said to comprise 78 episodes, at seven minutes apiece, and negotiations are apparently underway to distribute the series in France and the US.

We'll be honest -- the latest teaser posted on Facebook for the forthcoming Assassin's Creed game reveal was outright baffling to us. Despite containing major clues like the very clear image you see above (an Ottoman Tughra) and a string of numbers flashed twice ("24061459"), not to mention the friggin' Hagia Sofia (it's kinda famous), we somehow didn't put together that the teaser was very seriously hinting at an Istanbul setting for the next game. Thankfully, Turkish gaming site Oyungezer has plenty of insight to offer.

The string of numbers? That's a stand-in for "June 24, 1459," or for you Auditore family historians, Ezio's date of birth. And the Ottoman Tughra? Turns out that's an official seal or signature for a sultan, used to sign official documents and for money printing, among other things. It's like Prince's symbol, basically, except it originates with the Ottoman Empire rather than an egomaniacal musician.

Anyway, between the major landmark (Hagia Sofia) and the Tughra, we're guessing the big reveal will somehow center on Istanbul, potentially in the mid-1400s. As for when we'll find out, your guess is as good as ours -- the meter towards the next teaser is at 20 percent as of now, with no indication of how many unveilings are left in Ubisoft's plan.

Update: The fifth teaser has now gone live, and it features a man who looks suspiciously like Assassin's Creed 1's main character, Altair. It also features a two-headed eagle -- a symbol quite popular in the Byzantine Empire -- and the number string "11011165," which is presumably a placeholder for January 11, 1165. What happened on the eleventh day of January, 1165, you ask? That's a good question. Other than some unexciting interactions with Russia, not much was happening in Constantinople/Istanbul that day. Perhaps the next teaser will clue us in!

You remember that crazy Assassin's Creed teaser site that Ubisoft briefly launched late last week before pulling it down and pretending nothing happened? Turns out the French publisher is interested in promoting its next AC game after all, as the Facebook posting has reappeared and a trio of teaser videos are now available (found after the break).

The latest of the videos shows what appears to be the first Assassin's Creed's main protagonist, Altair, though the only portion unobscured with distortion is -- naturally -- his hidden blade. Some vaguely Assassin's Creed 1-looking buildings can also be seen in the upper left corner, potentially hinting at a return to the Middle Eastern setting for the next game in the series.

Folks interested in helping speed the reveal process for the next game can choose from a variety of social media-tied means to assist, though the progress bar for the reveal is reflecting just a four percent completion as of right now. While we're really interested in finding out what the next AC game is, we'd never outright suggest spamming your Facebook/Twitter for game reveal countdowns. We'll just say this: Do what you think is right.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears

Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 May 2011 13:30:00 EST. Ubisoft is gearing up to reveal the next Assassin's Creed game, launching a teaser site where fans can either e-mail, Tweet or post messages to Facebook to help speed up the unveiling. As of right now, the activity monitor on the teaser site only shows 3% progress, so it would seem we're quite a ways off from an official reveal.

Ubisoft production manager Azaïzia Aymar has been responding to questions on Twitter and generally laying down the fine print: Ubisoft is monitoring all use of the #ACReveal hash tag, though he says to go through the teaser site to ensure that your "action" is tracked.

What do you guys think the new game will be called? We've got a poll past the break, if you're interested.

Update: The teaser site has since been pulled. We'll leave the link in for posterity's sake. Finally, on April 12, Plus members will have access to a full game trial of the first Assassin's Creed, just in case you've never played Altaïr's original adventure. (Spoiler: it's good, but the sequels are much better.)
PlayStation Plus members getting free Sonic 2, Dungeon Hunter discount originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 00:00:00 EST. A survey floating around seems to suggest Ubisoft is entertaining the idea of bringing some of its franchises over to the big screen -- specifically, Assassin's Creed and Ghost Recon. The above image was submitted to Evil Avatar, which says the survey is geared the toward finding out what would most make those taking it want to see movies based on the franchises -- Ezio, Subject 16 and the like.

While we feel the world would probably be just fine without another war flick, we'd be all for an Assassin's Creed movie, granted that the project wasn't entirely about making money but also making a good movie. We're probably being a bit naive, though.
Ubisoft survey gauges interest in Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon films originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 21:30:00 EST. Ubisoft has confirmed with Joystiq that the PC version of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood will be playable in offline single-player mode after an initial login, quelling fears that Brotherhood would employ the same restrictive DRM as Assassin's Creed 2. Additionally, the PC version of Brotherhood will arrive on March 22 (a few days later than the previously suggested date). You may want to use those few extra days to sharpen your cutlery and brush up on your Italiano -- or, like, go to the Olive Garden for dinner or something.

Ubisoft has also detailed the technical specifications (posted after the break) required to play Brotherhood on a PC, as well as two retail versions of the PC release: a standard edition for $50, which includes the two multiplayer updates and the Da Vinci Disappearance DLC; and a digital-only "Deluxe Edition" for $60 that adds two extra multiplayer characters, two single-player maps, an extra skin and "additional multimedia content."
We've heard plenty of numbers regarding Sony's Xperia Play launch games, but few details about what each of its 20 supporting publishers have planned. Gameloft has cleared the air and filled 10 of the potential 50 launch game spots. Beyond Asphalt 6: Adrenaline and Star Battalion, you'll see Assassin's Creed, UNO, Let's Golf! 2, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, Modern Combat: Black Pegasus, Real Football 2011, Brothers in Arms 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction at launch on March 29.

Trailers for the two packed-in games, Asphalt and Star Battalion can be found after the break, both of which were briefly shown during Sony's (leaked) Superbowl commercial. Ubisoft Toronto Managing Director Jade Raymond's presentation at DICE expressed her belief that despite the current upheaval in the industry, she believes now is a great time to start a studio. Referencing EA Sports boss Peter Moore's speech about the industry being on a "burning oil platform" -- the idea being that it only changes when it has to -- Raymond believes it's more like a burning oil tanker that can course correct. One would hope she'd be optimistic about current core development being viable, considering she manages, what will become in time, one of the biggest studios in the industry.

In terms of IP development, she explained that the Ubisoft team spent a year of pre-production building the foundations of the Assassin's Creed franchise. "We spent quite a bit of time during conception thinking about the franchise metastory and story arc. And, most importantly, thinking of how to make sandboxes that future game teams and future teams in other media would be able to experiment and come up with their own stuff in this franchise." Regarding the ability to do Assassin's Creed comics, TV or a movie down the road, "You'll never get the best out of people if you just hand them this stone tablet."

Clearly showing her roots working on The Sims Online, it's quite obvious Raymond is a disciple of Will Wright's ideas about fan involvement in franchises. "I think you need to rely on fans," believing that the fan community will identify the best ideas to work from. She Iterated a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson for the video game industry: Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small franchises.

Back in 2008, Ubisoft picked up Massive Entertainment, along with the rights to the studio's acclaimed World in Conflict series. Shortly afterward, the studio's founder departed and that was the last we heard of the studio ... until today. Ubisoft's official Twitter account revealed that the Swedish studio is "teaming up on a project for Assassin's Creed."

A new Assassin's Creed game is due next year, despite the objections of some -- could Massive be working on that? Are they working on the upcoming 3DS game, Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy? Job openings on Ubisoft's employment site suggest an MMORPG is currently in development at Massive, but there really aren't any other details to go on at this time. We've followed up with Ubisoft for comment.
Ubisoft's 'Massive' studio 'teaming up' on an Assassin's Creed project originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. Lest you haven't been keeping up, The Fall tells the story of mustachioed assassin Nikolai Orelov, who operates during the Russian revolution. The case for Desmond, Altair, and Ezio sharing the same gene pool has never been stronger than in this fan-made music video starring all three. Be aware of some story spoilers, particularly if you haven't completed Assassin's Creed or its first sequel.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed 'Beautiful Lies' music video loves its lineage

Assassin's Creed 'Beautiful Lies' music video loves its lineage originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 11:25:00 EST. After teasing the project yesterday, Ubisoft has fully unveiled the particulars of UbiWorkshop's next project, Assassin's Creed Ascendance. The short animated film will serve as a primer into the shady, conspiratorial dealings of 16th century Rome, and will be released on XBLM and PSN next Tuesday, November 16 -- the launch day of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Check out the full trailer for the short after the jump.

Ubisoft promises the film "bridges the narrative gap" between the series' last installment and its fraternal sequel -- however, with a suggested MSRP of $1.99, we're not sure how many people are going to spring to purchase it. Especially not since we can bridge that gap for you, right now, for free: Some people with names you can't pronounce stabbed each other. You're welcome.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed Ascendance is an animated short, coming Nov. 16

Assassin's Creed Ascendance is an animated short, coming Nov. 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST. The next project from Ubisoft's non-traditional development branch UbiWorkshop has been slightly unveiled: A brief teaser trailer posted after the jump seems to preview a motion comic titled Assassin's Creed Ascendance. At least, we're assuming it's a motion comic -- a post on the UbiWorkshop site confirms that it's not a game, and, as far as we know, images in standard books and graphic novels don't ... um, move.

UbiWorkshop promises that more details about Ascendance will drop "really, really soon." We'll let you know once the true identity of the project is announced, though we stand entirely by our assertion that it will not be a book with moving images, because those definitely haven't been invented yet.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed Ascendance kind of revealed a little bit

Assassin's Creed Ascendance kind of revealed a little bit originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST.
