He has successfully integrated a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kempston_Interface">Kempston interface</a> into an Xbox 360 controller. Essentially, this means that the controller has been modded to accept standard Atari controllers. The mod was created to make retro games such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/paperboy"><em>Paperboy</em></a> more fun to play (the 360 d-pad isn't exactly the best). What makes this mod particularly interesting is that the joystick port has been attached directly to the controller. The best part is that the whole controller still works (minus the d-pad, of course). We'd share the instructions with you, but they contain a lot of techno-babble about <em>soldering</em> and <em>transmogrifiers</em> and whatnot. Hit the "read" link if you can comprehend such things.<br /><br /><strong>See also:<br /></strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/22/atari-joystick-mod-brings-back-memories/">Atari joystick mod brings back memories</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/360-kempston-atari-joystick-mod/">360 Kempston Atari joystick mod</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 09:30:00 EST. Do-it-yourself <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/20/diy-custom-black-360-controller/">custom colors</a>, d-pad <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/21/a-stiff-and-sticky-d-pad-mod/">stiffness mods</a>, and now, retro joystick mods. Coming to us from reader, Clint Thompson (AKA Neon360), this mod uses the joystick of the plug-and-play Atari Flashback system. Clint plans to house the guts of the controller in the Atari shaped base of the plug-and-play system. He reports that the mod isn't perfect yet (some of the inputs are screwy) but it is working. <br /><br />Why go to all this trouble for a one-button joystick? According to Clint, "I did this all so I can play <em>Galaga </em>like I used to play it on my Atari 7800 using the standard Atari joystick. Hey, my score went from 32,000 to over 80,000 after using the stick on the first try so it's working for me!"<br /><br />Right on, Clint! Send us more pictures (and maybe a how-to guide) when it's finished. Anyone have another creative mod they'd like to share? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tips">Let us know</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/22/atari-joystick-mod-brings-back-memories/">Atari joystick mod brings back memories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Dec 2006 14:50:00 EST.
