Though we're on record as saying that a bear with a bird in his backpack is objectively a pretty stupid thing to make a game about, we're also able to admit that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is a gem that didn't get the credit it deserved. If you had been holding off because you were worried about the GameStop clerk looking at you like a weirdo, you'll be happy to hear you can now indulge your most taboo desires as the bird-backpack wearing bear has made his way to Games On Demand.
No, we don't have any financial stake in Rare or Microsoft, we just hope they can afford a better trailer than the one we've embedded just above.

Honestly, with that font and those production values, it looks more like an Olive Garden training video on making the perfect pasta than an advertisement for a game published by the world's largest company.

So, on April 7th, won't you please spend 400 MS points for 250 achievement points, 12 new challenges, 7 new multiplayer games and the satisfaction of knowing an up-and-coming studio won't have to post such a depressing trailer ever again? We think it's well worth it.

According to a post by the Lord of Games (L.O.G.) on Rare's official website, we're told that Nuts & Bolts "news on potential lifespan-lengthening activities will be incoming very soon" and are given a "LOG's Lost Challenges" image. We ain't no smarty-pants geniuses, but if we had to take a guess at what L.O.G. is talking about, we'd go with DLC that boasts new vehicle building and task-based challenges.

Now that we think about it, the Banjo-Kazooie Contraption Contest Rare held back in December may have something to do with this content. We wouldn't be too surprised to see the winner's creation as a part of next week's announcement.
Rare hints at Nuts & Bolts 'LOG's Lost Challenges' DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST.
While some may see the reduction in price as a sign that Amazon.com wants to unload its unwanted Nuts and Bolts inventory, we're optimists in this situation. We predict the game has been such a success that most every 360 owner already has the title, so (to secure a few more game purchases) Rare partnered with Amazon to sell Banjo's latest adventure at a 50% discount.

Hey, we never said we were logical optimists.

Without much of an announcement, Rare just released a Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts title update that fixes the game's <strike>smallest</strike> biggest problem, the small text. Yes sir, the Nuts & Bolts small dialog text issue has been resolved! After the title update is installed, a new "Large Dialogue Text Option" is available under the game display options on the main screen. Once this box is checked, the game's dialog text is embiggened. Or, if you're a purist, you can keep the small text by keeping the option unchecked. You can see the difference in text sizes in our nifty screen comparison gallery below. Thanks Rare!

Considering Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts debuted at $39.99, it was already quite a bargain as far as Xbox 360 games go. Gamers are frugal people, though. They have to be, as gaming is an expensive hobby, after all. With this in mind, we present you with one heckuva deal on Banjo's latest adventure. Amazon currently has the game on sale for a paltry $25.99. Even better, it qualifies for free shipping. If you've been waiting to get your hands on the generally well received build-em-up / platformer, now's your chance.

[Via Evil Avatar]
Deal time: Snag Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts for $26 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 16:15:00 EST. Ah, those yuksters at Rare are at it again. After teasing fans only a month ago with Killer Instinct themed Piñata Vision cards, now they've gone and dropped pure fanboy flamebait into Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Note the image above, in which sequels to several favorite (and not so favorite) Rare franchises are mentioned, including Killer Instinct, Jet Force Gemeni, Battletoads, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

Now, we could live without most of them (okay, technically we could live without all of them), but we have to admit a new Battletoads would be more than welcome. Unfortunately, the text itself is relatively clear, the sequels are mentioned merely as a joke. Unless, of course, a sequel to an old franchise counts as Rare's upcoming "surprise."

We're not holding our breath.

[Via Joystiq]
Battletoads and Killer Instinct jokes in Nuts & Bolts originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 14:45:00 EST. You're going to be seeing this picture circulated a lot in the coming days, so we just wanted to get out in front of it for you. Yes, the above image, which hints at new Battletoads and Jet Force Gemini games, can be found in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. But no, you should absolutely not take that to mean that any of those games are actually coming. It says as much in the image itself, but that won't stop the internet from crushing itself under the weight of its own excitement.

As recently as today, Rare talked about how its next project is going to surprise people. We're not sure that points to a lot of its franchises being revived.

... We can still hope though, right?
The holiday onslaught continues as we are once again greeted by numerous heavy hitters. We've got your Mirror's Edge, your Banjo, your Call of Duty, your Command & Conquer. Please let us remind you that we are only two weeks into November and the gaming bonanza has yet to be fully unearthed. So, choose and choose wisely. Unless you're filthy rich, of course (and if you are, could you spare us a few bucks?).
We were admittedly cynical about Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts before we actually got our hands on it at E3, when we fell and fell hard. It seems like most reviewers are having the same response, even though some are pining for the simpler days of Banjo.

1UP (A-): "To all the Rare-haters out there: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (the latest in a series that's scarcely been heard from since the Nintendo 64 days, barring a pair of Game Boy Advance spin-offs) puts the ailing developer on the road back to relevancy. Nuts & Bolts' single-player structure, addictive multiplayer, and intricate vehicle-crafting system handily show that this isn't just another generic cute-n-furry platformer."

IGN (83/100): "A game that never stopped being fun for me. Despite its friendly appearance, Nuts & Bolts isn't exactly easy to pick up and play and might be over the head of some small children. There's a lot of depth here and the vehicle creation tools allow you to flex your mind and your fingers at the same time. "

The game it has become instead demands thoughtful, exciting challenges that inspire the player to pitch in and help get the most out of each level, but it fails to provide them, and even though it's worth persevering with for the occasional hurdles race, egg-and-spoon and a game-world in aptly Rare form, ultimately it's a brilliant shell with a mostly hollow centre. We woke up this morning and thought, "Wouldn't it be nice if we could build some kind of flying car?" As though they read our minds, Microsoft has released a demo for Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Clocking in at a hefty 1.07GB the demo allows gamers to play with the unique vehicle creation system that is the basis for many of the challenges in the upcoming platformer. Looking to flex your creative muscle? Hit the Marketplace and download the demo now. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts ships on November 11, exclusively on the Xbox 360.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts demo on the XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. The Gametrailers folks posted a comparison video that pits upcoming Banjo-Kazooie on the Xbox 360 versus old-school Banjo-Kazooie on the N64. After our expert analysis (watching the video) we can attest that the 360 version is nearly identical to the N64 version in terms of content, but has the added benefit of crisper models and a deeper color palette. The other bonus is the replacement of all Nintendo references with Microsoft Game Studios logos. Huzzah!
Well, when we say brand new, we mean recorded back in May during Microsoft's Spring Showcase. Even so, we can confidently say that this is the best Banjo interview yet recorded. Why? Because Gamerscore Blog's own Chris Paladino asks our question. Our question: how do you balance the game to keep it fresh and entertaining for both hardcore and casual players (Banjo is kid friendly, after all)? Find the answer to our brilliant question the video above.
New Banjo interview talks balance, challenges originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 12:45:00 EST. Microsoft announced today that gamers can now pre-order Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Much more exciting is the fact that the rumored price of $39.99 is true, making Nuts & Bolts a real bargain. Making the deal even sweeter, gamers that pre-order the game will receive a download code for the Xbox Live Arcade version of the original Banjo Kazooie. Even better than that, the code will work starting on November 14, the day of the Nuts & Bolts launch, a full two weeks before the XBLA game hits Xbox Live Marketplace. The XBLA release will include a feature called "Stop N' Swop" which allows players to unlock new features in XBLA game by playing Nuts & Bolts.

Finally, a new Nuts & Bolts world called Jiggoseum was revealed. You can check out the first images of Jiggoseum in the gallery below.

[Via Joystiq]

No, no, no, scratch that, we're PAAARRRTAY ANIMALS! That's just how we roll and that's why we traveled back into Los Angeles last night to attend Microsoft's Fable 2 and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts reception. Which, coincidentally, was in the same venue. During a special reception last night -- held at the same venue as the Gears of War 2 reception -- Microsoft allowed the press to get their grubby mitts on Rare's upcoming Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The game has already been the center of some criticism from gamers, especially fans of the Banjo Kazooie series. Most of the coverage of the game thus far has dealt with the game's unique vehicle creation system, which allows players to build vehicles from dozens of mix and match parts, LEGO style. For those hoping this article contains a revelation regarding the platforming in Nuts & Bolts, we regret to inform you that the game's hub world -- where most of the platforming takes place -- was not available for play at the event. Here's the good news though, the vehicle creation is really, really fun.
Continue reading Hands on: Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts vehicle creation

Hands on: Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts vehicle creation originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:00:00 EST. The original N64 classic, Banjo Kazooie, will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade this Holiday season. Along with Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Rare fans will now have two platforming games to look forward to. Though one will include a little more vehicles than the other.
Banjo Kazooie coming to XBLA later this year originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 15:02:00 EST. The internet is all atwitter thanks to an IGN hosted video of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts that features Microsoft's Ken Lobb mentioning that players will "twist the controller" to perform actions in the game. The video also featured Kazooie shaking her controller, which some took as a hint. Sorry to disappint, but motion control in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts just isn't so. We have received word from Gamerscore Blog's Chris Paladino who told us "all of the motion controller hopes and complaints regarding the Banjo video on IGN are false."

There you have it folks. Consider this rumor busted.

Update: We've received further comment from Microsoft just to make things extra clear. Per Microsoft: "There is no truth to this speculation. Ken's comment is in reference to rotating the left analog stick while hitting the X-button to move different things in the game." Can't get much clearer than that, now can we?
Rumor busted: No motion control in Banjo 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST. The addition of vehicles, parts, and the creation of the former using the latter wasn't exactly traditional to the series' formula. Despite the fact that what we saw and played was fun, we can definitely say that the bits we had time with weren't exactly reminiscent of the N64 days.

Rare looks to have anticipated the outcry and saved much of the more traditional stuff for later reveal. IGN recently got some media out of Rare that seems designed just for that reveal, the first video introduces you to Showdown Town, the game hub, and where most of the more traditional platforming happens. The second video showcases Banjo Land and displays some of the vehicle creation and editing, as well as some of the quirky world exploration. Get watching!

By the way, listen closely around 4:00 into the first video for what could be a possible mention of a long rumored item.

Continue reading New Banjo Kazooie videos and screens

New Banjo Kazooie videos and screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 21:15:00 EST.
This generation of games has seen the average price for a title rise to $59.99, so when a game looks to possibly be released at a price point lower than that, we take notice. Over at Gamestop's website, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts are both currently listed at the price of $39.99. Now while this could just be a simple error (Amazon has them both at $59.99), we'd like to hope that there's more going on ...

The rest of this is only speculation, but there are a few connections between the two games. They're both from Rare and so they're both Microsoft first party games. Now it could just be wishful thinking, but we'd like to hope that Microsoft might be willing taking a bit of a profit hit on these two to get them to be must-buys for a larger audience of gamers (read: kids).

Where today, thanks to Microsoft, we bring you the official box art for Rare's Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts in all its bear, bird, nuts, bolts and wrench glory. And we'll admit, it's a pretty nicely designed box art. Our favorite Nuts and Bolts box art design decision has to be the centering of Banjo's square nose on the cover, because we have something about adorably square cartoon noses. The main gameplay focus is still on platforming, only it's now platforming with vehicles too. Like most platformers, the specific objectives you have to complete are slightly varied, but are mostly different takes on collecting items.

To do so, you'll have a massive tool kit at your fingertips. The vehicles seen in the gallery can all be broken down into various pieces, and a large portion of the gameplay stems from mixing and matching vehicle parts to suit the task at hand. Or y'know, to just suit messing around with infinitely customizable vehicles in a physics playground. That playground can be taken online as well, and the game's multiplayer is very physics-focused and custom-content heavy.

Hit the break for more on Banjo.

In case you missed it, check out the Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts trailer one more time. Watch closely, especially at the 1:45 mark. Yep, that's an 8-bit Mario in all his planar glory, as both a testament to the user-generated nature of the game as well as we suspect a not-so-subtle nod to their former publishing partner.
More Spring Showcase goodness as we continue to dig through the assets provided by Microsoft. Perusing the Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts fact sheet, we've uncovered a few tasty bits of info. First and foremost, the game will feature multiplayer modes. Said modes will be available online, though the fact sheet is unclear if they will be offline capable as well. Given that Rare's other big game for 2008, Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, features offline multiplayer, we'd say it will probably be available in Nuts and Bolts as well. Cooperative multiplayer is listed as well, though the label "cooperative challenges" makes us think that co-op through the single-player campaign is probably out.

Oh, and in case you'd rather not futz with the do-it-yourself vehicle creation (you old fuddy-duddy, you), the fact sheet assures gamers that many pre-built vehicles are available. The fact sheet also refers to the vehicle creation as user created content. Could this mean that players will be able to trade their vehicle designs? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
One of the first, and perhaps most anticipated, bit is the debut trailer for Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. The video focuses primarily on the game's vehicle creation tool. Several vehicles are shown, from massive land vehicles to missile-firing air vehicles, all of which appear to be made of mix-and-match parts. Some platforming is also shown, but vehicles definitely seem to be the star of the show. Oh, and the end of the video is more or less an outright declaration of superiority over Nintendo's Mario. Watch it. Now.

Update: GameVideos edited the Mario headshot. You've seen the leaked Xbox 360 screenshots of his next awesomely alliterative adventure, but perhaps you weren't quite sure what the bear with a bird in his backpack was doing in any of them. According to numerous online reports (here's one and here's another), Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts sees the eponymous creature exploring "Showdown Town" and collecting parts to assemble all manner of physics-based, LEGO-like vehicles. The game's vehicle editor is said to be accessible at any point, meaning that the last thingamabob you picked up (one of 1,600) might just have a use in, say, a helicopter. Or a hovercraft.

The <strike>unconfirmed word (we're just waiting for Microsoft to officially blast out all this info at its Gamer's Day today)</strike> confirmed word is that we'll get to be the bear with a bird in a backpack building a bulldozer this November. Be sure to spy the game's debut trailer after the break.
Thanks to the newest issue of Game Informer there is now even more news about Rare's newest 360 outings. Regarding Viva Pinata 2, the article says that the game now sports two player local drop-in/drop-out co-op, a massively expanded trading card system, over thirty new pinatas, a photo mode, and more. Now as for Banjo, there's going to be over 1600 parts to find and use, note finding is back and is the game's currency, and Rare says that they really wanted to avoid making a hi-res old Banjo game. Hit the break for more info.
Continue reading Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and Viva Pinata 2: Trouble in Paradise details

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and Viva Pinata 2: Trouble in Paradise details originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 21:30:00 EST. So, thankfully, we can put those rumors to rest. Rare also added that "the honest truth is that people don't know the half of it yet" saying that "the game is not just a graphical showcase" and that they still haven't "revealed the gameplay mechanic yet." When we said that Microsoft was springing some serious pre-Gamer's Day leaks, we meant it. While NeoGAF members were getting the skinny on Viva Piñata and Scene It? sequels, they also tracked down a backpack-ful of new screens for Banjo-Kazooie 3, Rare's adorable action platformer. We've put the whole mess of them below for your enjoyment.

The Joystiq hive mind is split on BK as a series, but even the doubters among us have to admit that these screenshots look ... well, they look magical, OK? There, we said it. They look like magical fun. Are you happy now?

We still can't be 100% certain they're legit (we'll say 99.9% certain), but now thirteen more Banjo-Kazooie 3 screenshots have leaked their way online which has to say something. These newer screenshots come courtesy of a NeoGAF member who discovered them on a Microsoft owned press site that accidentally posted all of the MGD08 assets a few days early. We uploaded all fifteen leaked and still "alleged" Banjo-Kazooie 3 screenshots to the gallery below so you can look at the interesting characters, the abundance of vehicles and the game's gorgeous lighting. It's all yummy delicious! Expect to hear official news and an official asset release sometime mid-week.

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
Even more Banjo-Kazooie 3 screenshots surface originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 03:00:00 EST.
Hitting the internets today are two alleged leaked screenshots from Rare's upcoming Banjo-Kazooie 3 and, if legit, they'd be our first look at what we can expect from Rare's cartoon duo. Personally, the screenshots (viewable in the gallery below) look to be rather official and could be associated with some sort of press kit that's set to release as part of Microsoft's press event they're holding next week. For analysis' sake, let's say these are real Banjo-Kazooie 3 screens, what is your knee-jerk impression of Rare's handiwork?
And now comes word that the secrecy may be coming to an end with MundoRare claiming that both Rare projects were shown to select members of the media last week (presumably) under heavy NDA. Very interesting stuff. We also hear that Rare fansite The Rare Witch Project received an exclusive piece of Banjo-Kazooie 3 concept art that can only be shown when the time is right. Probably because it's spoiler'ish.

Adding up the Banjo teaser glimpse we saw at last year's E3, all kinds of random rumors, plot talk, a cryptic website and now word that the media finally are getting to see these projects, we're certain this mystery shroud will be coming off very soon. And what about that second unannounced Rare project? Expect answers at E3 in July.

[Via NeoGAF]
Select media members preview Rare's latest originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 15:00:00 EST. Rare says many of its fans suspected a recent teaser site for the 360 version of Banjo Kazooie was actually just an elaborate April Fools' Day prank (it wasn't). But, to placate the legion, the company offered up some 4-1 plots for their game, all but one of which may be a complete fabrication.

The red herrings include B & K hunting the "witch's giant T.I.T", Banjo and Grunty falling in love (our personal favorite) but we'd be more likely to believe Kazooie being abducted by aliens. Which on the list are you leaning towards?
Rare offers (mostly fake) Banjo Kazooie plots originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 15:00:00 EST. You see, they claim that one of the five possible storylines they offer up is the game's real one with the other four being made up nothingness. Take a look at all five different plot outlines after the break, decide which one is real, then slap your face because we all know none of them are legit. Or so we don't think. Maybe Rare's April Fools' joke is the fact that they're being serious? Or maybe that's what they want us to think? Meh, too confusing, just enjoy the read.
Well, we just got tricked into downloading Silverlight. That's about all the information we were able to glean from a recently-launched teaser site for the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Banjo Kazooie. Once you download Silverlight, all you get is a spinning puzzle piece, a picture of a bear and the knowledge that you just helped Microsoft propagate their Flash competitor.
