You'll be able to spin off some psy-force as the Phoenix, embodied by the X-Man Jean Grey, and take command of the Skrull queen Veranke, among others. It's not surprising to see a big "Secret Invasion" influence, given the game's initial trailer. See the full list after the break.

Avengers: Battle for Earth will have you and your friends jumping around and debating the correct time for clobberin' on November 9. If you want to see some of these heroes throwing down right away, there's a demo available for download in the meantime.
Continue reading Avengers: Battle for Earth features favorites, familiar faces

Avengers: Battle for Earth features favorites, familiar faces originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Oct 2012 02:30:00 EST. The Blizzard Entertainment developers are walking through the biggest features of the newly announced Mists of Pandaria expansion, and while you can head on over to our sister site at WoW Insider for all of the details, there was one big new feature that we couldn't ignore. Players have been able to collect pets in the World of Warcraft for quite a while now, but a new Pet Battle System will come with the next expansion that allows players to both customize their pets with new names and other items, and even battle each other.

And if you think that sounds a little bit like Pokemon, you're not wrong at all. The battle system, which Blizzard's lead designer Cory Stockton walked through, will have players choosing three pets to fight with at a time, turn-based battles using three abilities per battle (out of six), and even "Master Trainers" which can be beaten around the world of Azeroth to unlock new abilities.

Pets can be obtained in all kinds of different ways, and there will be new "wild pets" that can only be found out in the world (in Goldshire, the devs suggested, while it's raining, during the Spring, only at night). Blizzard has given away special pets during holidays, at events like BlizzCon, and even sold pets for real money on the store. As if World of Warcraft needed to be any more addictive, Blizzard has somehow figured out a way to include their own version of Pokemon inside of it.
WoW: Mists of Pandaria will introduce Pokemon-like Pet Battle System originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 16:45:00 EST.
Did you pick up Infinite Space yet? The DS spaceventure was released from its docking station by Platinum Games yesterday, and so far the reviews are actually better than we expected. We've got two more launch trailers to share with you: one above which seems to be the intro to the game (complete with Star Wars-style crawl and the weird narration we've come to expect from this game); and another after the break which will walk you through the game's battle tutorial.

If you've tried the game out, let us know what you think below. The battle system seems different and the story isn't supposed to be too bad, either. You wouldn't think that an infinite void of open space would have that much going on, but maybe it's worth a shot.
Continue reading Infinite Space puts two launch videos into orbit

Infinite Space puts two launch videos into orbit originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 12:37:00 EST. Anticipation is building for the upcoming director's cut of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which is set to drain Japanese wallets of MP next month, as well as give eager gamers their first hands-on taste of Final Fantasy XIII. The demo, which comes bundled with the Blu-ray exclusive movie, also promises to give players an early look at how the anticipated sequel handles combat, which judging by a recent 1UP article looks to sample both Final Fantasy XII and Squaresoft fan favorite, Xenogears.

Much like the "Active Time Battle" system seen elsewhere in the series, XIII's gauge-heavy combat will likely tread familiar territory for series vets. Here different actions -- such as casting a spell or smacking an imp upside the head with a giant sword -- each siphon off a different amount of "time" from a meter, with more powerful attacks demanding a greater sacrifice of patience. This all sounds interesting, though like mom and apple pie, Final Fantasy and combat just go together. And while the series' battles may lack a flaky crust, their mix of spiky hair and androgyny can be just as filling. Well, maybe not as much as mother's rhubarb pie -- that stuff's to die for.
Final Fantasy XIII's battle system explained originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 11:30:00 EST. A fresh tournament is about to spring on Mario Kart Wii fans. Starting September 1st and concluding on September 10th, this latest tourney is only for those that rock the Wii Wheel and will take place on the N64 Skyscraper Battle Stage. It's a really interesting title, if we may say so. What do you all think?
SNK Playmore unleashed footage from their recently-announced Kimi no Yuusha, an RPG slated for Japanese release this winter. The good news? The battles look three billion times better (we counted) in motion than they did in the recent scans. We still don't know a lot about what's going on here, but we do know there is violence of the roleplaying variety afoot ... and that's pretty much all we need.
Debut footage of Kimi no Yuusha originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 18:30:00 EST. Thankfully, we remembered we had a whole closet full of the little guys, so we just plucked one out and sent 'em off.

According to him, Famitsu has a rather lengthy look at the title, documenting the different stages of the game. Initially, there is a strategy stage where the players sets up all their pieces, which then transitions into battle. There's also a Persuasive mode, which looks to us like a way to move the plot along. It's kind of an interactive chat with the NPCs.

Say 'Hi' to new Saihai no Yukue info originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 16:15:00 EST. Less than two years into what some see as a ten-year battle might seem like an odd time to declare victory, but not to Microsoft's Xbox 360 Group Product Manager Aaron Greenberg. In an interview with Next-Gen, Greenberg stated that, in his opinion, "the battle for the core user is sort of over, if you will. ... I feel we've secured that core buyer, and that gives us quite a bit of an advantage versus PS3, which is late to the game and still at a price disadvantage relative to the Xbox."

Greenberg did offer one slight caveat to his claim, acknowledging that Sony is "a very formidable competitor in Europe," (indeed) but overall he scoffed at the idea that upcoming PS3 exclusives would make a dent in the Xbox 360's lead in installed base and mindshare. "They're trying to go after a consumer that has already bought an Xbox 360," Greenberg said. "You could say that they showed up with too little, too late." Or you could say that Microsoft is declaring too much too early. We report ... you decide.
Microsoft's Greenberg claims victory in battle for 'core user' over Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 14:00:00 EST. In short, Blizzard says MMO Glider violates its copyrights and the end-user license agreement that players agree to when they install the game. Donnelly says he isn't breaking copyright because he isn't selling a copy of the game client itself, and that no one reads those stupid end-user license agreements anyway (we may have made up that last part of Donnelly's defense, but that doesn't make it any less true!).

WoW Insider also has an update on the latest round of legal wrangling in the case, which seems to be a somewhat split decision that leans towards the side of the bot-makers. Ethical issues aside, we definitely don't have the legal acumen necessary to work out which side is in the right here. If any commenters out there think they can untangle this one, have at it.
Blizzard locked in legal battle with WoW bot maker originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST.
Despite the PS3's late start in Europe, SCEE chief David Reeves has confidently predicted to MCV that the system is poised to overtake the Xbox 360 in cumulative European sales by late summer. "In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy ... our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360," Reeves said, adding that the PS3 outsold the 360 in all PAL territories 3-to-1 last week.

Is such a turnaround possible in the time frame Reeves suggests? A quick look at VGChartz (graph shown above) does show Microsoft's European sales lead on the PS3 recently getting cut in half, from roughly 1.8 million units in July '07 to only 0.9 million units in January '08. The narrowing came almost entirely during the highly competitive holiday season, though -- since then, PS3 and 360 sales have run roughly parallel.

Of course, the whole Sony/Microsoft battle might be meaningless, considering the Wii utterly dominated European sales through the 2007 holiday season. Then again, we suppose there's some pride in battling for the silver. Just ask Mitt Romney after the Iowa caucuses.

With this new pair of trailers for Digimon World Dawn and Dusk, we're sensing a strong pro-day, anti-night vibe. The Dawn trailer seems much more interesting and offers more information, while the Dusk video is rather perfunctory. "There's some Digimon! Stuff happens! You want it!" The monster above knows it, too. He senses the contempt for all things evening, and it displeases him. Don't believe us? See for yourself after the jump.

Continue reading Digimon: Day versus night

Digimon: Day versus night originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 13:00:00 EST. If we really wanted to arouse some vitriol, we'd say it's not worth having even then, but that would really just be flame-baiting for its own sake. We don't even actually feel that way.

What we want to know is, is it okay in your mind to have a game like this that absolutely depends on another game to be fun? Among them:

Mario Party 8

Super Mario Strikers: Charged

Big Brain Academy

Pokemon Battle Revolution

The Bigs

Boogie

My Word Coach

Rayman: Raving Rabbids 2

We're most jazzed for Strikers, especially after reading such effulgent impressions from Penny Arcade. But which game shown at NMS excited you the most? If you were stuck on an island and could only have one game ... you know, assuming you had a Wii and a couple Wiimotes, and a nice TV ... maybe some nunchuks, oh, and the sensor bar, and I guess you'd need a standard 120 W outlet somewhere in the sand ... and a decent supply of food and water, or you wouldn't spend your time playing the Wii ... you know what, never mind.
Wii Warm Up: NMS excitement originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. Toddlers are dangerous creatures. Especially when they get their hands on expensive gadgets. This life lesson comes to you via 1UP Editor John Davison, who recently discovered it for himself when his two sons woke up early one morning wanting to play video games.

It seems Davison keeps his PS3 and his Xbox 360 in a less-than-well ventilated entertainment unit. Usually this is of no consequence as the two consoles are rarely running together. Davison also makes sure to keep the doors open whenever the PS3 is running. Unfortunately on this particular morning his wee-est nipper decided to play along with the older brother as he played on the Xbox 360. To make a short story shorter, the toddler pushed the PS button on the SIXAXIS controller (which was obviously the young lad's controller of choice when pretending to play - such good taste at such a young age), causing the PLAYSTATION 3 to fire up.

And fire up it did. The temperature within the unventilated entertainment unit shot up, initiating some kind of Scandinavian sauna challenge between the two consoles. As the 360 started showing signs of its encroaching Red Ring of Death, the PS3 was still going strong. In the end Sony's behemoth emerges victorious. And the 360? Don't ask, it's not pretty.

Oh well. I guess it's perfect timing. Time to go pick up one of those Xbox 360 Elite's I've heard so much about, right?

[Via Joystiq]
Xbox 360 can't handle the PS3 heat originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 19:15:00 EST. It's an exhaustive Pokedex of the new creatures, and includes name, type, abilities, location, and information about evolution.

What strikes us as we look at this list is how weird the names of Pokemon have gotten. Maybe it's because we've had ten years or so to get used to the older names, but the new ones are jarringly nonsensical. See Bidoof above.

Unfortunately, Game|Life's Chris Kohler beat us to the "Let Me Show You Them" headline for his post about the article. But don't worry, DQ buffs; the rumors were just that, and according to the latest Shonen Jump, DQIX will in fact retain a turn-based combat system. Also, players will be able to customize the appearance of their characters, from height and weight to hair and face, and even their costumes. There's no word yet on how extensive this system may be, but even a small dose of customization can go a long way.

Ever since two of the major console manufacturers picked sides in the high-definition movie disc war, gamers everywhere have taken an unnatural interest in the home video market. High-Def Digest has unearthed some new, detailed data on this battle from a recently leaked Sony report (PDF ZIP link).

As of March 18, the cumulative sales numbers show Blu-ray (844,000 total units) holding a slight edge over HD-DVD (708,600 units) in the United States. These overall numbers are less interesting than the historical trend, though -- HD-DVD sales were strong through the end of 2006 but have fallen well below rising Blu-ray sales in 2007. Could the slow growth in PS3-equipped homes finally be having some effects on the movie market?

Worldwide dominance for Sony's new format isn't settled yet, though. Next Gen reports that a growing number of independent studios in Europe have decided to back HD-DVD to the exclusion of Blu-Ray. But despite an excellent turn-based battle system and charming sprite skirmishes, we can't help but think what would have made it irresistible ... <strike>ninjas</strike> pirates. And though developer Orbital Media has been promising the turn-based strategy title Pirate Battle since like forever ago (mid-2004ish), very few droplets of hope remained.

Some recent news, however, says otherwise. Though the GBA version has been canceled (uh ... whatever), the DS version is still on the way. Also, though no other details were given, the game will also appear on "another platform". Hmm. In any case, Pirate Battle looks like an excellent strategic outing, so we'll keep an eye out for ya.

For bonus awesome, check after the break for our top three pirate pickup lines.

[Thanks, Andy!]
Continue reading Pirate Battle en route

Pirate Battle en route originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jan 2007 17:00:00 EST. When I first heard of Warhammer: Battle for Atluma's pending release on the PSP, I got really excited. I've never played a Warhammer game, but I am a big fan of Magic: The Gathering and have been waiting for a good collectable card game for the PSP for a long time.

Unfortunately, it looks like I may be waiting a little longer for that game.

Now don't get me wrong, Battle for Atluma isn't terrible game, but I don't think it's going to win over many newcomers to the Warhammer universe.
Continue reading PSP Fanboy review: Warhammer: Battle for Atluma

PSP Fanboy review: Warhammer: Battle for Atluma originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 03 Dec 2006 11:00:00 EST. While all of the updates are media-related, they still manage to reveal some secrets the game was hiding. We've done the responsible thing and busted out the bullet points because, frankly, there are a lot of updates.
Now, the page mentions a need for software on the DS, yet does not tell if this software will be included with the Wii game, downloadable from the Wii, one of the DS games, or need to be separately purchased. Personally, we're assuming it'll be downloadable, but the article does make mention of it acting much in the way Wi-Fi does in Pokemon Diamond & Pearl.

The site also mentions that you can bring some of your Pokemon from Pokemon Diamond & Pearl into the Wii game through the use of 'coliseum mode.' This allows you to bring 6 of those Pokemon into the game and persistently record their battle information through Pokemon Battle Revolution.
Pokemon Battle Revolution site gets plenty of updates originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 12:55:00 EST. The DS is to be used as controller, it turns out, allowing players to choose actions and view stats on pertinent Pokemon while the battle plays out on their television set. Sounds good to us, but we'd like to see some more features utilized between the handheld and console. The game is to release during the Japanese launch window for the Wii and is scheduled for a 2007 release in North America.
DS controls Pokemon Battle Revolution originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Oct 2006 11:45:00 EST. With approximately 27 Yu-Gi-Oh! games on the Game Boy platform, you'd think that the PSP would get with the <strike>trend</strike> <strike>fad</strike> program with its own version of the mega-popular children's card game. Well, in September, Japanese gamers can partake in some widescreen card dueling set in the GX universe. Anyone that remembers finding link cables for the GBA will breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Tag Force will feature four player battles wirelessly. American gamers will only have to wait until November, and the game will feature voice acting and animation from the series, now running on Cartoon Network.
OMG! With Sony finally playing the legal card against homebrewers, PSP 3D takes a retrospective look at the history of Sony's struggle. They claim that Sony has been getting more desperate, and a bit angrier, as seen by this quote from a Sony programmer: "Overall it's [homebrew] frowned on. Our tech guys have gotten madder and madder lately, and it does void your warranty."

The complete article has tons of interesting tidbits. Of particular interest is the infamous GTA exploit which allowed for homebrew to be run even with the most recent firmware release during that time:
"The GTA hack operated in a way which utilized the game's in-game SYSCALLs (system calls) in order to run arbitrary code. This is why kernal (full PSP hardware/software IO access) mode via the hack was impossible; you are only allowed to code as much as the SYSCALLs availability, therefore, advanced SYSCALLs, like those for VSH (update mode) or kernal mode were unavailable for use, simply because GTA: LCS didn't utilize them. This fact brought upon the problem of concern for Sony's engineers. They'd have to release a firmware update which jumbles up the method of loading SYSCALLs in order to prevent homebrew from being loaded. Not easy stuff, really, especially when you need to maintain the working status of all the retail UMD games already released and sold."
[Via PlayStation.com boards]
Sony fights back: their battle against homebrew originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Aug 2006 17:10:00 EST. In the scans, we get a new glimpse of the main hero, even in his Mega Man battle suit (we're not impressed), as well as the new battle system. The battle system looks like it's some kind of variation on the game tic-tac-toe, where instead of X's and O's, there are deadly robots fighting for their very lives.

New Mega Man scans originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Jul 2006 14:00:00 EST. The new hero will be named Seiga Subaru. Iwata stated that the DS would be able to act as a touchscreen controller for the console, which we assume would work when navigating the unit's menus outside of playing games, although one game is making it possible for the DS to control gameplay so far.

The recent announcement of Pokemon Battle Revolution promises that the player will be able to use the Wi-Fi capabilities of the DS to perform a number of actions. Being the first game to implement features with the DS, we're hopeful that many more developers will take advantage of this properly.
DS and Wii: so happy together originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jun 2006 09:42:00 EST. Also, the game is to be able to utilize the upcoming Pokemon Diamond and Pearl versions to exchange correspondence via Wi-Fi and swap pokemon, along with displaying the 2D battles of the DS game on your TV in 3D through the Wii.
