Apparently it's a lot of transforming, since variants of "transform" show up a lot in the following statement about the transformational studio.<br /><br />"EA in Vancouver is transforming its studio to align with EA's transformation to high-growth digital formats, including online, social gaming and free-to-play," an EA spokesperson told <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/ea-confirms-small-number-of-layoffs-at-vancouver/">IndustryGamers</a>. "The <em>Need for Speed World</em> team in Burnaby is leading the digital transformation with 11 million registered players. As the BC studio makes this transformation, a small number of employees are being impacted while most others are being retrained, redeployed and rolling-on to new projects."<br /><br />EA recently reported a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/01/ea-sees-205-million-net-loss-in-q3-rise-in-social-games-users/">net loss of $205 million</a> in the third quarter, but is seeing significant positive transformation in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/01/ea-was-number-one-game-publisher-on-app-store-in-december-mobil/">increased digital product sales</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/ea-in-vancouver-sees-small-number-of-layoffs/">EA in Vancouver sees 'small number' of layoffs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 20:30:00 EST. We always kinda knew that someone was gonna go careening off a cliff in a high-end sports car at some point during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a>, we just didn't expect to see their surprised face going over said cliff. Ever gone on a spontaneous road trip with your friends? You all suddenly decide that you should <em>absolutely</em> take a trip to Vegas for the evening, and you can <em>totally</em> come back the next day. You all put on suits, pile into the car ... and three hours later, with everyone sleeping in the car, you remember it's actually a five hour drive. The moment's been lost.<br />
<br />
That's the problem Brian Lindley and his team are facing with EA's race across the country in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a>. "If you think about actually trying to drive across the country," says Lindley, "it might get a little monotonous, even when you're racing."<br />
<br />
To combat that issue, Lindley and the Black Box folks have created a new "Battle" race mode, one of a few different ways the team is hoping to vary the pace as protagonist Jack makes <em>The Run</em>.<br />

As <em>Split/Second</em> fans, we're keeping an eye on <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> because of its racetrack cataclysms. EA's made another slick trailer for it, though this one's a bit more interested in the perilous life of, uh ... the brother of Sean Faris?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/24/need-for-speed-the-run-trailer-demolishes-the-road/">Need for Speed: The Run trailer demolishes the road</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 06:00:00 EST. Previous news about Need For Speed: The Run has made a big deal about the fact you can <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/need-for-speed-the-run-lets-you-get-out-of-your-car-take-off-r/">get out of the car</a>, but let's face it, being in the car will get you across the country much faster, and heck, it's just plain more fun. And when you're in a car, you could do a lot worse than a Porsche 911 Carrera S, which you can see in action in the video above.<br />
<br />
The car is unfortunately only available in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition-comes-with-trio-of-super/">the Limited Edition of the game</a>, which is available for preorder right now, and arrives with the title on November 15. That said, even when you're in one of these babies, driving it through the snow and curvy roads of the mountains might be plenty of fun, but can't really be recommended in terms of safety. If you're going to drive up there, it's probably much better to go in something much more <em>practical</em>. Something with four-wheel drive, perhaps.<br />

<br />
Like buying games brand new? EA sure wants you to, as its "Limited Edition" of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> incentivizes just such a purchase with the bonus inclusion of three fancy sports cars -- for the same price as the regular ol' "normal" edition, no less. Along with special access to a Porsche 911 Carrera S, a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and a Lamborghini Aventador, picking up the "Limited Edition" nets you "five exclusive Challenges" to slay with your high-powered sports car of choice.<br />
<br />
The only version of the Limited Edition that we can spot thus far is on EA's own Origin PC download store for the totally-normal-edition price of $49.99, so it stands to reason that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are similarly priced ($59.99 on consoles). Just to be sure, we've asked EA for a better idea of what to expect, price-wise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/need-for-speed-the-run-detailed-racing-to-stores-nov-15/">come November</a>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> EA clarified that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will cost the standard $59.99, and the "Limited Edition" will operate similarly to the "Limited Edition" version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-bad-company-2"><em>Battlefield: Bad Company 2</em></a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition/">Need for Speed: The Run (Limited Edition)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition/#4339006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/limitededitionchezl1beauty_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition/#4339007"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/limitededitionlamaventodorbeauty_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition/#4339008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/limitededitionlamaventadorchezl1racing1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/need-for-speed-the-run-limited-edition-comes-with-trio-of-super/">Need for Speed: The Run limited edition comes with trio of extra supercars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 12:30:00 EST. "You're not trying to get first, you're trying to make up ground," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> producer Alex Grimbley explained to me during a demo session in midtown Manhattan last week. Rather than putting priority on being the absolute first during individual races, <em>The Run</em> focuses on an overall place in a cross-country race, amounting to roughly 200 miles of in-game track spread across the US. And yes, it'll allow you to go back to individual areas and work on improving track times.<br />
<br />
"Get to 101st by the time you make it here, get to 50th by the time you make it to Chicago, get to the top 10 by the time you make it to New York ... so this is a different take on a sprint race," Grimbley continued.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/">Need for Speed: The Run (Desert Porsche)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324196"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr1-1311769421_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324197"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr2-1311769424_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324198"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr3-1311769426_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324199"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr4-1311769427_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr5-1311769428_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/27/need-for-speed-the-run-preview-getting-back-behind-the-wheel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Need for Speed: The Run preview: Getting back behind the wheel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/27/need-for-speed-the-run-preview-getting-back-behind-the-wheel/">Need for Speed: The Run preview: Getting back behind the wheel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 09:02:00 EST. The beginning of this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run/"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> trailer is nearly identical to that of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/chase-down-this-need-for-speed-the-run-footage/">EA's E3 press conference</a> presentation, except the middle section adds a few extra minutes of driving ... before the conclusion reminds us of all those quick-time events we'd nearly forgotten.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/need-for-speed-the-run-e3-trailer-gets-2-minute-time-extension/">Need for Speed: The Run E3 trailer gets 2 minute time extension</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 21:05:00 EST. As you can see above, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> is about more than just driving cars across the United States as fast as possible. Apparently, it's also about hopping out of your car and running like hell while all sorts of madness chases after you.<br />
<br />
During EA's E3 2011 presser, a controller-laden developer took the reins and, well, ran as fast as possible, eventually leaping from a building as a helicopter fired on him. He then snagged a cop car and took off as the helicopter continued after him, all the while dropping bullets by the boatload. We'll have the trailer up for you as soon as possible, but for now, know this: you'll totally be able to run around on two feet in <em>Need for Speed: The Run</em>, as well as spin out on four tires.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/need-for-speed-the-run-lets-you-get-out-of-your-car-take-off-r/">Need for Speed: The Run lets you get out of your car, take off running</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 15:56:00 EST. Following yesterday's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/need-for-speed-the-run-revealed-in-teaser-trailer/">teaser reveal</a> of <em>Need for Speed: The Run,</em> EA has today spelled out some details we didn't know and confirmed some that we inferred from the trailer. First and foremost, the game is indeed speeding toward a holiday release date of November 15, 2011 in North America (and Nov. 17 in Europe). EA Black Box is at the wheel (as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/need-for-speed-shift-2-black-box-developed-nfs-both-hinted-for/">rumored</a>), with EA DICE's Frostbite 2 engine under the hood.<br />
<br />
Additionally, <em>The Run</em> will feature the much-loved Autolog feature (as loved in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit"><em>Hot Pursuit</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shift-2-unleashed/"><em>Shift 2</em></a>), as well as the "hot cars and crazy-fast chases" we've come to expect from the <em>NFS</em> series. As seen in the trailer, the game will follow racers cross-country (<em>Cannonball Run</em>-style) from San Francisco to New York, with plenty of stops in between. EA's announcement also notes that "entering the race is just the beginning," with races taking place in "dense urban traffic," on "icy mountain passes" and "narrow canyons." Presumably we'll find out more about <em>The Run</em> as E3 approaches, this June.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/">Need for Speed: The Run (box art)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097791"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstr360pftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrpcpftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097793"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrps3pftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrwiipftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/need-for-speed-the-run-detailed-racing-to-stores-nov-15/">Need for Speed: The Run detailed, racing to stores Nov. 15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 09:55:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/need-for-speed-world-shifts-to-free-to-play-model/">going free-to-play</a> back in September, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-world">Need for Speed World</a></em> has added roughly 2 million users to its online racetracks, surpassing 3 million registered users in total. Just imagine rush hour!<br />
<br />
Although the majority of the expanded user base can be attributed to the change to a free-to-play business model, the recent localization of the game into French, Polish, Russian and Spanish likely contributed to the rise in <em>licensed</em> drivers, too. Now, how would EA say, "Please buy some DLC" in those languages?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/17/need-for-speed-world-population-passes-3-million-registered/">Need for Speed World population passes 3 million registered racers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST. EA CEO John Riccitiello told attendees of a recent Bank of America conference (via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=265540">CVG</a>) that <em>Need for Speed</em> developer Black Box Studios was "on a death march, building for five years in a row," citing a decline in sales between 2004 and 2007 as the end result. "[They were] annual iterations, they had to put it out; no rest for the weary," Riccitiello said.<br />
<br />
He then explained that "It was definitely our fault," adding, "Those days are gone. We're back in two studios and we've got them on bi-annual cycles." In his opinion, the forthcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit">Hot Pursuit</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit"> reboot</a> is the fruit of that changed-up development cycle. "This year is right back in the core action driving ... it's had a two-year dev cycle ... I feel great about it," he posited. Oddly, no mention was made of the now annual Black Box franchise <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skate">Skate</a></em>, but we're hoping for an announcement of <em>Skate: Hot Pursuit</em> by year's end.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/ea-boss-says-need-for-speed-series-was-hurt-by-death-march-dev/">EA boss says Need for Speed series was hurt by 'death march' dev cycle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 22:00:00 EST. What's that? The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/04/skate-3-maloof-money-cup-dlc-available-on-june-8/">Maloof Money Cup DLC</a> from early last month for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skate-3">Skate 3</a></em> wasn't enough to quench your desire for more skateboard-based <em>hooliganery</em>? Well perhaps the addition of a new skater (Danny Way) in a new locale (Hawaii) with 24 new challenges will help? Have a first look at <em>Skate 3</em>'s "Hawaiian Dream" content pack just after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/03/skate-3-hawaiian-dream-dlc-lands-on-july-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skate 3 'Hawaiian Dream' DLC lands on July 6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/03/skate-3-hawaiian-dream-dlc-lands-on-july-6/">Skate 3 'Hawaiian Dream' DLC lands on July 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 17:30:00 EST. A pair of LinkedIn profiles suggests that at least two <em>Need for Speed</em> titles will be released next year. According to the <a href="http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/chris-mcclure/2/a93/b06">profile page</a> of programmer Chris Mcclure, he was at <em>NFS: Shift</em> developer Sightly Mad Studios from August 2009 - February 2010 where he "worked on new open world technology but also worked on <em>Need For Speed Shift</em> too." Cleverly, Mcclure altered this statement <em>today</em> from "... but also worked on <em>Need For Speed Shift 2"</em> after his apparent reveal was spotted by <a href="http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/post/755759187/senior-programmer-slightly-mad-studios-privately">superannuation</a> (and preserved by <a href="http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:K2vMjfyJDTEJ:uk.linkedin.com/pub/chris-mcclure/2/a93/b06+http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/chris-mcclure/2/a93/b06&amp;cd=3&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us&amp;client=firefox-a">Google's cache</a>). <br />
<br />
The original <em>Shift</em> was released in September 2009, and if Mcclure <em>is</em> covering his tracks, then a sequel was likely underway as work on the first game wrapped, which would allow roughly the minimum development time necessary to release <em>Shift 2</em> some time during the first quarter of 2011. Recall that in February, during an earnings call, EA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/08/dead-space-2-and-ea-epic-shooter-slated-for-early-2011/">dated</a> a<em> Need for Speed</em> game for that period. COO John Schappert described the unnamed iteration as "another big driving simulation" (<a href="http://investor.ea.com/common/download/download.cfm?companyid=ERTS&amp;fileid=349753&amp;filekey=e59fd89b-c8ae-4f36-a413-180ab9227da7&amp;filename=EA%20Q310%20Script%20FINAL%202.8.10.pdf">Conference Call Script</a> [PDF]). <em>"Need For Speed: Shift 2"</em> would be a good fit for that description and time frame.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/need-for-speed-shift-2-black-box-developed-nfs-both-hinted-for/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Need for Speed: Shift 2, Black Box-developed NFS both hinted for 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/need-for-speed-shift-2-black-box-developed-nfs-both-hinted-for/">Need for Speed: Shift 2, Black Box-developed NFS both hinted for 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 14:00:00 EST. EA has <a href="http://news.ea.com/news/ea/20100527005573/en/Speed-World-Races-PCs-July]">announced</a> a July 20 date for the official launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/need-for-speed-world"><em>Need For Speed World</em></a>, its racing MMO developed by EA Black Box. The game has been in closed beta for quite some time, with Joystiq <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/16/need-for-speed-world-mmo-preview/">getting a look at it</a> back in March. <em><br />
<br />
NFSW </em>will be released as a free game client which will let players advance their driver up to level 10 before being asked to purchase a "starter pack." The game can continue to be played without it, but players won't be able to level up to earn new vehicles and power-ups. <br />
<br />
EA is <a href="http://world.needforspeed.com/preorder">accepting pre-orders</a> for a $19.99 starter pack, which allows for progression up to level 50 and includes an exclusive car, beta access, the ability to play <em>NFSW </em>a week before release and a selection of power-ups. Unfortunately, our suggestion for a "back-seat driver" power-up -- which would play the game for you to grind levels -- doesn't appear to have made the cut.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/27/need-for-speed-world-opens-up-july-20/">Need for Speed World opens up July 20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. It was a motley crew at the Venice Beach, CA skate park on Wednesday, as EA held a public launch party for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/skate-3"><em>Skate 3</em></a>. Skater kids were running everywhere, checking out the game, taking full advantage of the free food and giveaways, and of course skating, grinding and jumping on the various rails and bowls available to them.<br />
<br />
In among all of the skaters was one Chris "Cuz" Parry -- even as he gave out free copies of the game and limited edition skateboards to raffle winners, he would see a 12-year-old pull some air and respond directly over the PA: "Did you see that little ripper go? That was sick!"<br />
<br />
After he finished the giveaways, we pulled the producer of all three <em>Skate</em> games to the side and asked him about what EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/black-box">Black Box</a> studio has planned post-release.<br />

Self-identification through product choice is a mainstay of the skateboarding scene, from t-shirts to shoes to skate decks to the soundtracks on skate videos. It's all part of the culture, so it's only fitting that a skateboarding game - say, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Skate-3/"><em>Skate 3</em></a> - shares in that. To celebrate this common thread, let's play spot the product placement after the break!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/skate-3-good-times-with-product-placement/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skate 3: Good times with product placement</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/skate-3-good-times-with-product-placement/">Skate 3: Good times with product placement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 06:33:00 EST. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a lot of new Games on Demand. We've got three new ones this week and a price drop. As for the new titles, we've got a platformer, military shooter and hardcore skating simulation in <em>Prince of Persia</em>, <em>Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway</em> and <em>Skate 2</em>, respectively. <em>Prince of Persia</em> and <em>Skate 2</em> each run $19.99 in the US, while <em>Brothers in Arms</em> will set you back $29.99. Meanwhile, Rockstar's <em>Table Tennis</em> has seen a 10 dollar price drop to $19.99. As always, pricing and availability vary by region.<br />

Sure, there's a bit of gameplay video thrown in, but most of it centers on the much talked about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/skate-3-video-gets-by-with-a-little-help-from-some-friends/">online friend system</a> by way of uniting skateboarders, apparently under an umbrella of <em>brutality</em>. <br />
<br />
With a <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/skate-3-demo-now-on-xbox-live-for-all-gold-members/">demo already available</a> and the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/17/skate-3-may-11-release-date/">May 11 release date</a> fast approaching, we're not sure you need much more to get you on board for <em>Skate 3</em>, but we'd suggest checking out the commercial just to see what happens at the end. Now you <em>have</em> to watch! Does it have narration from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s49WlY1amYI">Skateboard Sense</a>? Check. How about some raw meat grinding a huge ledge? Yup, it's there. What about a brief section where some dude goes crazy, pounding everyone around him with a skateboard? How about zombies and big heads and tons of bails and -- okay, you get the picture.<br />
<br />
It's probably the most non sequitur trailer we've seen in a while and <em>definitely</em> the craziest <em>Skate 3</em> trailer yet. Check it out above.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/24/skate-3-trailer-takes-us-to-the-urban-playground/">Skate 3 trailer takes us to the urban playground</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Apr 2010 00:30:00 EST. The demo, which arrives on Xbox Live and PSN on April 15 (just in time for tax day!), will let players show off their skating skills in the game's University District. The demo will include both single-player and multiplayer challenges including Own the Lot, Domination and Hall of Meat. If you'd rather work on your not-constantly-falling-over skills, the demo features the new Skate.School mode as well.<br />
<br />
Players can also appease their inner skate park designer by dropping up to 24 different objects into the demo. And, as if all that wasn't enough, the Skate.Reel feature is included as well, allowing players to upload their epic runs -- or epic bails, as the case may be -- for all their friends to witness. Check out a trailer for the demo above.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/06/skate-3-demo-highlighted-in-new-trailer/">Skate 3 demo highlighted in new trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 18:40:00 EST. From the highly customizable skate parks (that can be shared online) to the revamped graphics creator, there's no doubt that the devs at Black Box have upped the ante on user creation in a significant way. <br />
<br />
While there's always the worry that the <em>Skate</em> franchise could start packing in a bit <em>too</em> much (the <em>Tony Hawk</em>-ization of <em>Skate</em>, if you will), it looks like the folks in charge of improving the annual franchise know to keep the game focused on skateboarding culture and real physics. We'll be checking out the game this weekend at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east">PAX East</a>, so look for a more thorough opinion soon (and feel free to tell us in the comments below what you want to know about the game).<br />

Experts that they are, the folks at EA developer Black Box are well aware of the attraction, and they've employed the character to teach <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-3">Skate 3</a></em>'s "Skate School" mode. <br />
<br />
Frank acts as a framework for the fleshed out <em>Skate 3</em> tutorial, teaching players how to nail tricks and polish their execution -- it probably helps that he's full of goofy, if occasionally awkward, humor to lighten up the mood as well. And hey, if we learned anything from the previous two <em>Skate</em> games, we're going to be spending a ton of time just figuring out how to ollie without faceplanting over and over (and over), so we could use the levity.<br />

Last week, we finally got to try it for ourselves. While it was admittedly only a small part of what looked to be a fairly meaty experience, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/team-up-and-watch-this-new-skate-3-trailer/">the co-op play</a> was surprisingly fun.<br />
<br />
After an introduction by members of the Black Box development team, we got to team up with a couple other journos and hit the abundant pavement of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/skate-3-dev-diary-explains-the-origins-of-port-carverton/">Port Carverton</a>. We played as the host for a three-player game, and, as such, had the ability to access a sub-menu that showed the various locations within the game world and the team challenge types available at each. We could then either move the team there, or put it up for a vote.<br />

A quick note for anyone out there still clinging to the first iteration of EA's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/skate"><em>Skate</em></a>: It's time to move on. EA has <a href="http://skate.share.ea.com/default.aspx">updated the page</a> for <em>Skate</em>'s Reel service, which allows users to upload and share videos of their in-game exploits. The update reads, quite simply, "Servers for the skate.Reel feature will be shut down on March 1st, 2010." It also notes that the game itself will still function properly, but users will no longer be able to upload videos to share either in-game or via the <em>Skate</em> website. <br />
<br />
As tipster Cal points out, there are some Achievements related to uploading videos, so you'd better start capturing those sweet runs and massive bails before it's too late.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/skate-reel-servers-totally-bailing-in-march/">Skate Reel servers totally bailing in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 11:30:00 EST. The third installment takes place in the fictional skateboarding paradise of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/skate-3-throws-down-in-may-2010/">Port Carverton</a> and, as the above developer's diary informs, it's actually a homage to recently-deceased colleague Ron "Mad Carver" Hartley. He's even got his own in-game memorial, which we think is a great way to be remembered. <br />
<br />
When we go, we hope somebody cares enough to at least hold on to the newspaper clipping about that one blog that lost its life defending the earth from the hordes of Raptormen who'll eventually enslave us all in 2022.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/skate-3-dev-diary-explains-the-origins-of-port-carverton/">Skate 3 dev diary explains the origins of Port Carverton</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. Featuring a variety of locales from the first game, <em>Skate 2 </em>players will now be able to shred it up in classic spots such as the Parkade (yes!), the School (<em>italicized yes!</em>), and the Community Center (<strong>bold yes!</strong>), all while utilizing the new tricks found in the sequel. The DLC even places some objects for you to move around in each area, as you can see in the video above.<br />

<em>Skate 2</em>'s<em> </em>"Classic San Van" DLC pack is available now on Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN for 400<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> and $4.99, respectively.<br />

Update: EA has dished out some screens for the DLC. Hit up the gallery below to check them out.<br /><br />Unless you wanted to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/underachievement-ea-selling-unlock-everything-dlc-for-skate-2/">unlock everything the easy way</a> or <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/free-lotr-conquest-dlc-not-so-free-skate-2-content/">cut some awesome videos</a>, there hasn't been much support in the way of DLC for us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> fans. That is, until now, as EA has unveiled Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza for the game.<br /><br />The new bit of DLC is available today on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn">PSN</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xblm">XBLM</a> for $5.00 and 400<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" />, respectively, and allows skaters to blunt slide and manual around the centerpiece of Rob's MTV show, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/fantasy_factory/series.jhtml"><em>Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory</em></a>, as well as the surrounding downtown Los Angeles area. Rob was pretty impressed with Black Box's job of recreating the space in the game, as he comments it has all of "the ledges, gaps and rails" of his showpiece, and "more surprises outside the park that both gamers and skaters will enjoy<em>."</em><br /><br />So who's going to shred up Rob's Fantasy Plaza?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/">Skate 2 DLC Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/enviro-inside10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/enviro-inside2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_fscrook1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_crook2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372537"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_crook1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/skate-2-introduces-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza-dlc/">Skate 2 introduces 'Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza' DLC [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 11:40:00 EST. Before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/need-for-speed"><em>Need for Speed</em></a> officially burns internet rubber, PC gamers in Asia will get an early taste of what it feels like to slip behind the wheel of <em>Need for Speed: World Online</em>. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/30/ea-unveils-new-need-for-speed-trio/">recently announced</a> free-to-play online experiment will begin testing in Taiwan and Hong Kong in March, well ahead of the game's eventual debut later this year.<br />
<br />
EA explains that <em>Need for Speed: World Online</em> will boast "the largest free roaming environment" in the series' history as players "form teams to take on the competition and the police." The Black Box-developed racer is one of several attempts at refueling the property, though we're waiting to see if the game makes it across the finish line or slips on a patch of black ice as it races to North America this Winter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/need-for-speed-world-online-begins-testing-in-march/">Need for Speed: World Online begins testing in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 08:00:00 EST. It seems EA's long-idling racing franchise <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-need-for-speed-series-has-been-canceled/">isn't destined for the scrap heap</a> at all, as the publisher has unveiled three new <em>Need for Speed</em> titles across several platforms. In an interview with <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6203924.html">Gamespot</a>, EA's veep of marketing, Kevin Munro, insists that "the new brand strategy around three specific genres will keep the game fresh and players entertained." This refreshing and oh-so-entertaining trio of titles includes:<br />
<ul>
    <li><strong>Need for Speed: Shift</strong> (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PSP) -- A "hardcore racing simulation" overseen by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/black-box">Black Box</a> executive producer Michael Mann, and Patrick Soderlund, the co-founder of DICE and current senior vice president of EA Games Europe. External developer Slightly Mad Studios will be responsible for putting a realistic spin on the franchise.</li>
    <li><strong>Need for Speed: Nitro</strong> (Wii, DS) -- As you might expect, this one will feature a "unique visual style," courtesy of EA Montreal. Nitro promises to take full advantage of the unique controls on offer for both platforms, but without sacrificing depth. According to Munro, "We do not want to fall into the trap of creating a 'Need for Speed Lite.'"</li>
    <li><strong>Need for Speed: World Online</strong> (PC) -- Jointly developed by Black Box and EA <strike>Shanghai</strike> Singapore, this free-to-play online racer is set to launch in Asia this Summer, with a North American release slated for next Winter.</li>
</ul>
You can look for <em>Shift</em> and <em>Nitro</em> on North American shelves sometime during Fall 2009.<br />
<br />

In the wake of recent rumors that the entire <em>Need For Speed</em> series <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-need-for-speed-series-has-been-canceled/">has been canceled</a> -- rumors followed by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/ea-details-restructuring-plan-laying-off-10-of-employees/">closing of developer Black Box</a> -- Kotaku <a href="http://kotaku.com/5134825/need-for-speed-undercover-patch-coming-soon">reports</a> that "inside sources" are claiming a patch is soon headed to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/need-for-speed-undercover"><em>Need for Speed: Undercover</em></a>. Details are fuzzy, though sources claim that the patch will focus on gameplay and performance issues and will include "improvements". Hopefully, the performance tweaks include a fix for the game's awful framerate. The patch is expected to arrive on all platforms in the coming weeks.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/rumor-need-for-speed-undercover-patch-on-the-way/">Rumor: Need for Speed: Undercover patch on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 16:30:00 EST. Thus, we also know that you were devastated to find out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/skate-2-demo-grinds-the-rails-onto-the-xblm/">demo</a> doesn't <em>have</em> online modes. We'd like to tell you that we've magically enabled online play so you could try it out, but you'll just have to settle for a <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44044.html">developer diary video</a> instead. In said dev diary, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> online producer Brian Lindley discusses the various online modes. Among these modes are Hall of Meat, in which players compete for the most damaging bail. Players can also engage in Freeskate Activities, which are simple challenges in which all online players can compete. Finally, there's Create A Spot, which allows players to create their own custom skating spots, which can then be uploaded for other players to try.<br /><br />Especially neat is that players can jump from the single player game world straight to online at any time right from the pause menu. Very slick. <em>Skate 2</em> debuts later this month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/skate-2-dev-diary-talks-online-modes/">Skate 2 dev diary talks online modes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:30:00 EST. That 10% comes down to about 1,000 jobs, so it's nothing small. And, part of that 10% includes EA Black Box, the developers behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=need+for+speed"><em>Need for Speed</em></a>, <em>Skate, </em>and its Wii port, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-it"><em>Skate It</em></a>.<br /><br />Black Box aren't the only ones affected, however, as EA will be closing nine studios and publishing locations overall. The remainder of Canada-based Black Box will be merged with another EA Canada studio, based out of Burnaby, BC.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/ea-details-restructuring-plan-laying-off-10-of-employees/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/ea-cutting-10-of-its-work-force/">EA cutting 10% of its work force</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 17:12:00 EST. EA's <em>Skate </em>franchise which has a sequel coming out next year and <em>Tony Hawk</em>, a franchise that has kinda lost its luster over the years. Recognizing this, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> devs are adamant about not being like Mr. Hawk.<br /><br />Talking with <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/12/09/skate-avoiding-tony-hawk-syndrome/">MTV Multiplayer</a>, <em>Skate 2 </em>associate producer Shaun Laker made it clear that they aren't going down the same path that the <em>Tony Hawk</em> franchise did, avoiding such fate by simply listening to their community. "As long as we keep putting out great games and don't rush it out and polish it and make sure we're listening to the community and hearing what they're having to say [we will avoid that]," explained Laker, adding "we listen to the community and know what they're asking for and respond to that."<br /><br />Keeping a franchise fresh by listening to a game's passionate community, implementing changes and serving up a polished product. Who would have thought something like that would work?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/skate-devs-have-a-plan-to-not-be-like-tony-hawk/">Skate devs have a plan to not be like Tony Hawk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 12:15:00 EST. After years of tired <em>Tony Hawk</em> sequels, 2007's <em>Skate</em> was a refreshing change of pace. Black Box's interpretation of the sport was a far more realistic one. The innovative "flick" control scheme better emulated the experience of performing ollies, nollies, grabs and assorted flip tricks. Players were dropped into the fictional city of San Vanelona, a massive virtual playground where anything and everything could become the starting point of a skating line. So how will Black Box attempt to improve the experience in its follow-up, <em>Skate 2?</em> By giving you new things to do <em>without</em> your skateboard.<br />
<br />
<em>Skate 2</em> no longer glues your character to the board. With a simple press of a button, you can get off your board and start exploring the environment. New San Vanelona is a mix of old and <span style="font-style: italic;">new</span>, and the city begs to be explored. No longer will you have to attempt to "glitch" the system to get to interesting skate points. You'll be able to walk up a set of stairs, for example. You'll be able to jump on top of a ledge. It's a simple addition, but it allows the world to be explored in far greater depth than before.<br />
