Next week, the Dark Knight himself comes out from the shadows and into your home -- and if you haven't already pre-ordered Batman: Arkham City, you may want to peep this Blockbuster deal. If you put down $10 on the game at any Blockbuster store, you'll get a free month of movie and game rentals when you go to pick it up. Simple as that!

We'd say that's a hard deal to pass up, but then again we think it's probably more difficult to find an actual Blockbuster nowadays.
Pre-order Batman at Blockbuster, get a month of free game and movie rentals originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 04:45:00 EST. If the unverified Blockbuster UK flyer above is to be believed, it can only mean two things: 1) Blockbuster done goofed it, and 2) Her Majesty's gamers will be able to get their hands on Sony's touchy-feely handheld as early as October 28.

The mailer was delivered to IGN by an anonymous reader, and while the authenticity of the advertisement has yet to be authenticated, the date does coincide with Sony's global launch window. As of press time, no changes have been made to Blockbuster UK's pre-order listing for the Vita, which still lists the street date as "TBA." We'll be keeping a close eye on this one, but for the time being we're going to file it under "hrmmmm" in our massive rumor rolodex.
Continue reading Rumor: PS Vita UK release date outed by Blockbuster

Rumor: PS Vita UK release date outed by Blockbuster originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 30 Jul 2011 12:30:00 EST. Yesterday, we heard about beleaguered rental chain Blockbuster's attempt to yoink some of the video game rental market back from the hands of GameFly by implementing a new "Games By Mail" rental service. Today, we received more details: For an extra $7.99 plus tax on top of their standard monthly fees, Blockbuster Online subscribers will be able to rent one game at a time, which counts towards the total number of discs they're allowed to have out under their subscription plan. Fortunately, if you don't check out any games during the one-month billing period, you're not charged the extra eight bucks.

For more details on the service -- which Blockbuster is currently testing in Cleveland, Ohio "with plans to expand this nationwide before the end of the year" -- check out the company's FAQ page.
Blockbuster details new Games By Mail rental system originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 11 Apr 2010 17:00:00 EST. According to an email The Consumerist says one of its readers received, struggling entertainment rental store Blockbuster is considering adding games to its media-by-mail service (think GameFly). According to the email, customers would "be able to choose from over 3,000 different games, including many popular new releases."

When asked if Netflix would consider a similar move, a company spokesperson seemed unenthusiastic, saying "Movies are perennial. A great movie from 1972 is still a great movie but who wants to play Madden '95?" Back in April, video game rental service GameFly filed a formal complaint against the United States Postal Service for supposedly offering preferential treatment and care to Netflix and Blockbuster parcels, and none to its equally fragile mailers. Now, GameFly is petitioning for information relating to "Netflix-only" drop boxes present in certain post offices. Though the USPS filed a directive to employees two years ago mandating that these boxes be taken down to avoid legal ramifications, GameFly presented photo evidence of Netflix slots remaining in two California post offices.

GameFly has also continued its original complaint, claiming parcels from larger DVD rental services were being manually sorted to prevent damage and breakage. The USPS responded with a curt "all DVD mailers are not equal," and suggested that GameFly update its disc packaging to better protect its product.

When asked for comment on the complaint, a GameFly representative said, "Unfortunately, we cannot comment as it is a legal matter."

[Update: For visual aid, we've received the above image from a reader whose post office most certainly does sort Netflix and Blockbuster DVDs separately. He said they don't include GameFly DVDs because the rate at which encounter them "is much lower." Well, look at that.]
Sure, it started in June, but Blockbuster's "Summer Escape Pass" still seems like something worth mentioning. The promotion, which ends September 7, allows subscribers to rent unlimited games and movies for just $10 a week. The catch? It's only one item at a time.

So, a normal Blockbuster game rental is -- according to the spokesperson -- $8.99 (for five days?). So, if you live near a store and are just spending your summer getting through last winter's backlog, one could do that very efficiently with this deal.
Blockbuster 'summer escape pass' allows unlimited rentals for $10/week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 08:00:00 EST. We were sent a tip regarding a new PS3 bundle that Blockbuster was supposedly selling, so we headed on down to our local chain to snoop around. What we found was the above image showing off a PS3 bundle consisting of a 40gb console, Transformers: The Game, Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HDMI cable, and a 12-week rental card (which allows you to rent one movie each week), all for $359.99. What makes this such an odd story, however, is that this bundle isn't offered at every Blockbuster store.

We called another nearby chain and quizzed an employee on his store's bundle. He said that particular store offered a 80gb console, with Transformers: The Game, Click Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HMDI cable, and a 12-week rental card, all for $499.99. So, it would seem that each store has a bit of leeway with its bundle package. If you're in the market for a PS3 and thinking Blockbuster, give them a call before you head down. Both stores we talked to were all sold out.
Blockbuster selling high-end PS3 bundles originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Jun 2009 17:00:00 EST. The good news? People are renting games (and, ya know, buying other stuff) by the boatload, with the newspaper reporting "residents are snapping up DVDs, renting video games and stocking up on food."

We contacted a few American Blockbuster outlets and asked the folks on the other end of the line how business has been lately, and if they've seen an uptick in game rentals over the past couple of weeks. "No, actually, it seems kinda slow ... I guess maybe people are afraid to come out or something," we were told by an employee at the chain in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Calling another store in Madison, Alabama yielded vastly different results, where an employee told us, "The past couple of days it's increased. I think it definitely has to do with the Swine Flu worries."

While these testimonials do little for our theory that more folks are renting games in the States for the same reason, it's quite possible that us brazen Americans are simply turning a blind eye to the clear signs of end times. Hell, we're still planning on going to E3 2009 and that's a month away! We could all be dead by then!

Blockbuster announced today that it will begin offering game rentals as part of its Total Access online movie rental service. The company will start a pilot program during its second quarter, with a goal of implementing the integrated system nationally by the second half of the year. Essentially, Blockbuster is trying to morph Total Access into a Netflix meets GameFly offering. The question: Will the quality of service be as high as the two go-to names in the field?

<strike>Several details on how this program will work are missing from the company's press release. We've contacted Blockbuster and will hopefully speak with them soon. We'll update as soon as we hear back.</strike>

Update: We talked to Bob Barr, vice president and general manager for Blockbuster Online. He answers our questions after the break about the service and the possibility of integration with PS3.
Continue reading Blockbuster integrates games into Total Access subscription [update]

Blockbuster integrates games into Total Access subscription [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 11:24:00 EST. According to the folks at NeoGAF, your local Blockbuster may be a bottomless well of golden gaming bliss right now. Up until January 5th, Blockbuster is holding a buy one, get one free promotional offer on games. If it's priced at $14.99 or lower, then it qualifies for this sale. According to some of the folks in the GAF thread, there's plenty to be had. We advise you check your local store to see what's in stock, because the GAFfers seem to be finding some steals.
Check your local Blockbuster for buy one, get one free sale originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Dec 2008 11:55:00 EST. Officially, the 40GB model has been discontinued by Sony, replaced by the new 80GB Core machines. However, a leaked Blockbuster memo sent to Kotaku shows that remaining 40GB systems will be getting a price cut this weekend. The system, which includes a Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc, will be available for $360 -- that's a savings of $40. (Perhaps Sony should've reconsidered the price of the system to something that doesn't evoke their primary competitor?)

Sony has been adamant about keeping the current price of the PS3 in an attempt to recover from the costly launch of the system. However, with Microsoft's aggressive cuts working their magic (in America and Japan), Sony may want to reconsider their position.

[Thanks, Trevor!]
Blockbuster memo: 40GB PS3 getting small price drop this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. Don't believe us? Watch the above video and check out the PlayStation Blog's Jeff Rubenstein as he confidently strides across the store and proves to you that they exist. Testosterrific! They're available in both $20 and $50 flavors and should be in stores nationwide. The only time we ever saw a PLAYSTATION Network card was when Sony gave us one for Christmas. Never -- not even once -- have we seen these cards available at a retail store. This is easily one of the most demanded items from our readers, many who don't have a credit card to use for the PSN. The only time we ever saw a PLAYSTATION Network card was when Sony gave us one for Christmas. Never -- not even once -- have we seen these cards available at a retail store. This is easily one of the most demanded items from our readers, many who don't have a credit card to use for the PSN. Summer blockbusters aren't just good for propping up the sales of crappy new movie-based games ... it turns out they're also good for pumping up the prices of crappy old games based on the same characters. For proof, look no further than the always interesting Video Game Price Charts blog, which shows a distinct and recent uptick in the selling prices for older games based on the Speed Racer, Iron Man and Indiana Jones franchises. Never mind that these games aren't directly related to the new movies, or that the games are universally awful (well, almost) -- once that old clunker of a game gets attached to a hot new movie, the asking price can get inflated by up to 170%.

We can almost see the logic behind the increased demand, from the average consumer's perspective. After all, why waste $50 on the crappy new Iron Man game that junior is begging for when you can pick up a crappy old Iron Man game for half the price (even after accounting for the recent uptick). The little punk won't know the difference anyway, and the game will get him out of your hair so you can get back to having an affair with the pool boy. It's win-win!
Summer movies raise demand for associated classic games originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 14:55:00 EST. For reasons unexplained, up until now, the movie and video game rental chain has thought it wise not to make the Nintendo DS, whose hardware and software sales have been booming since 2005, a standard fixture in its video game aisles.

In an email press release sent out yesterday, Blockbuster announced its plans to introduce DS game rentals, as well as hardware and accessories, to all of its locations nationwide. Days after confirming plans to stock Grand Theft Auto IV alongside movies on its outer release wall, Blockbuster today announced that the recently released Wii flavor of Mario Kart will make the leap as well. The move is part of what the rental giant calls a plan to "significantly expand its game business," which includes a greater emphasis on selling retail games and hardware, as well as stocking a larger number and variety of games to rent.

Blockbuster specifically noted plans to offer a special $499.99 PS3 bundle in its corporate-owned stores, which will include a 40GB console, a copy of the movie Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray, Activision's video game adaptation of Transformers, and the opportunity to rent one free PS3 game or Blu-ray movie a week for 12 consecutive weeks. However, while we appreciate the added attention Blockbuster is giving our favorite hobby, we doubt even this will sway us into venturing out into the sunlight to rent anything.
Blockbuster expands game focus, takes on retail game, hardware sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 11:29:00 EST. Starting with Grand Theft Auto IV, Blockbuster Video will begin adding video games to the "sacred" outer new release wall. Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes tells Variety that the GTA IV launch is a "real springboard" for the company and it plans to use it as a centerpiece for moving games to where only the latest Hollywood releases used to tread.

Now, granted, if this were before the advent of Gamefly this news would be much more exciting -- although, we'd still have to worry about pesky late fees. Blockbuster has been hurting in recent years as if faces competition from many angles, not the least of which is Netflix. This move for video games in Blockbuster doesn't seem so much like a sign of respect for the growing games industry, but as another desperate move by a company that's struggling to survive.
Blockbuster putting GTA IV on the 'new release' wall originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 13:30:00 EST. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Blockbuster is further expanding its supporting for Blu-ray. They've been backing the boys in blu for a long time now. Last year they integrated Blu-ray into 1,700 shops; this time, they're taking the HD format into 5,000 stores across the United States and Canada. Blockbuster is touting "the company is positioning itself to become the customer's Blu-ray headquarters."

To further showcase the company's Blu-ray backing, Blu-ray kiosks (with movies playing off PS3s) will be on display in stores. Blockbuster's by-mail service will also undergo a change reflecting the increased support for Blu-ray -- customers can now set their accounts to automatically choose Blu-ray format for rentals. Sounds good, but Netflix already got that last one done.

[Via press release]
Blockbuster further expands Blu-ray selection across US & Canada originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST. Another blow to HD DVD came today as BJ's Wholesale Club will bounce the format from its shelves in the fourth quarter according to VB, a Variety company. Just like yesterday's news about Target going with Blu-ray players, if Wal-Mart's Sam's Club went Blu-ray it'd be a much bigger deal, but BJ's is a large company on the East Coast (particularly the North East). BJ's will continue to sell HD DVD format products on their website.

Although Microsoft previously stated they were standing by HD DVD, they may need to review their statements from January if they don't want to "charge customers $200 extra for something that may be the next Betamax." If the domino effect continues it might be at least worth considering an affordable Blu-ray attachment to the Xbox 360 -- despite Blu-ray being a Sony format. It's pretty simple, give HDTV consumers the option of a Blu-ray attachment for their Xbox 360, or have them thinking the PS3 is a game machine and an HD movie player in one affordable package (you know, further down that 10 year line). Then again, if direct digital content gains a foothold, it may all be a moot point anyway.
BJ's Wholesale goes Blu-ray originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 16:52:00 EST. They will begin in October and go "at least through the holiday season." This comes a month after Blockbuster, the U.S.' largest brick-and-mortar video rental chain, said they would be going Blu-ray exclusively too. Heavens to Murgatroyd, is Sony actually going to win a format war? Blu-ray shall avenge its cousins Betamax and MiniDisc if it emerges victorious against HD-DVD.

The Reuters information is currently being further explained by Universal Home Entertainment. Universal would like to clearly point out Target will continue to carry the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive and movies, they also say that Target is still currently selling HD-DVD players. Well, yes, because it's not October yet.

Universal has a right to feel defensive. Target's declaration probably shouldn't be taken too lightly -- although, when Wal-Mart declares Blu-ray, it's all over. So, even with the HD-DVD attachment price drop for your Xbox 360, plus five movies, is it worth getting? Umm, might want to put that money aside for now. It's a nice $179 dent in the cost of the PS3, which comes with Blu-ray playback built in. The holiday season is approaching and that'll be a pretty big indicator of what's to come. The last thing any consumer wants is to have an expensive machine which plays a dying format.

Update: Added Universal statement info to story.
Target targets Blu-ray as the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 20:17:00 EST. That makes sense, since they only serve customers 18 and up and deliver games directly to said customers' homes. And to be clear, by "makes sense" we mean "doesn't make any sense at all."

Blockbuster isn't going to carry it either, but that's less of a surprise. The move comes as more consumers choose the Blu-ray format according to Blockbuster, which added that the choice was helped by the lopsided availability in high-def titles. Currently all major studios, except for Universal, support the Blu-ray format.

It should also be noted that the Blu-ray player coming standard with the PS3 has helped move movies. Although the PS3 isn't selling fantastically, it does create a solid install base for the Blu-ray format compared to HD DVD players, which have to be purchased separately in the form of the Xbox 360 add-on or a dedicated player. We haven't really seen the inside of a Blockbuster store since 2002 (due to Netflix and GameFly) and it would be interesting to know if the online rental numbers (which would probably be more tech-forward renters) are the same as the stores. Once the online versions of Blockbuster and Netflix choose a side, then we'll have our answer to who's going to win this ridiculous format war.

[Via NextGen, Thanks Rob]
Blockbuster stores boast for Blu-ray originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 09:30:00 EST. They decided to not increase any additional HD-DVD support after their initial testing showed that 70% of renters were going Blu-ray last year. Matthew Smith, the senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster said, "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing."

They will continue to rent HD-DVD movies online and at the original 250 stores, but this is a major victory for Blu-ray. Getting support from the largest movie rental company in the world will give Blu-ray a lot of additional exposure into the more casual market and and could end up being a decisive move towards ending the format war. Though you couldn't tell from this week's release schedule, momentum is strongly in the Blu-ray format's favor right now, and it's starting to look dubious that HD-DVD is capable of turning the tide. Now if only a certain movie studio would realize that as well ...

[Thanks Dom!]
Blockbuster massively expands Blu-ray support originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jun 2007 22:00:00 EST. A robbery at a UK Blockbuster didn't go off as planned when the thief requested a PLAYSTATION 3 and ended up settling for an Xbox 360. The two Blockbuster employees working at the store were apparently approached by the suspect, who brandished a gun and asked for money from the registers. Afterwards, his request for a PLAYSTATION 3 unit was denied, due to the store "not having one available". So he asked for an Xbox 360 and grabbed nearly $800.00 in Xbox 360 games before exiting the store. Police didn't arrive on the scene for almost 20 minutes after the call, due to an address mixup.

Seems to go against the grain of reports that PS3s are stocked and widely available. Perhaps a price cut would alleviate threats of future robberies like this? Let's hope so, but don't hold your breath.

[Via Xbox360 Fanboy]
Thief denied PS3, gets Xbox 360 instead originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 20:00:00 EST. Apparently a criminal in the UK walked into a Blockbuster store and demanded a PlayStation 3 at gunpoint (they sell consoles there?!) and upon being told they didn't have any, he asked for an Xbox 360 instead. He ended up walking out with that, a few games, and some cash from the register.

What cracks us up is what must have been running through the guy's head when he heard "Sorry sir, we're out of those." He had to be thinking he couldn't just leave empty-handed. What if they'd been out of 360s, too? Would he have asked for 200 copies of The Secret?

Maybe Blockbuster should have asked him if he wanted to order his console of choice with a downpayment. After all, he had the cash.

[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]
Man tries to steal PS3, gets Xbox 360 instead originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 17:23:00 EST. American movie rental giant Blockbuster announced today that it is selling its British Gamestation subsidiary to European mega-retailer Game Group PLC for $150 million (approx. £74 million). The move will increase Game's British footprint by over 200 stores and leave the chain as the largest games retailer in Europe by a sizable margin.

The consolidation is reminiscent of the merger between Gamestop and EBGames a few years back that created a virtual monopoly on U.S. game retailers. There had been some speculation that GameStop would scoop up GameStation next, getting a larger toehold in the British market in the process, but that now seems to be a missed opportunity. "Instead of gaining traction in the market through an acquisition of Gamestation, GameStop allowed its key rival in the UK, Game Group, to create a greater barrier to entry in that market," analyst Michael Pachter said. "We are not optimistic that GameStop will be able to grow a grass roots presence in the UK for at least three years."

Euro retailer Game buys Gamestation for $150 million originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 11:59:00 EST. Between now and April 30th, renting an Xbox 360 game from Blockbuster will net you a free 48-hour trial of Xbox Live Gold. The offer doesn't mention any limit restrictions, so if you rent a lot of games, you could conceivably rack up quite a few hours of free Live. Of course, as the page on Xbox.com mentions, you'll probably want to make sure that the game you rent features some kind of online multiplayer, otherwise you'll be stuck staring at some particularly uninteresting leaderboards.

Anyone plan on grabbing some free trials?

[Thanks, Adam]
Free 48-hour Live Gold trial from Blockbuster originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 16:15:00 EST. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter estimates that GameStop will pay less than $40 million for the small retail chain, which operates 72 locations in the southeastern United States and averages roughly $550,000 in annual sales (per store). Blockbuster has owned Rhino since May 2004, but has elected to divest this non-core asset as the company focuses on its Total Access rental service. GameStop was the obvious buyer, as the umbrella corporation already controls an estimated 98% of the US's used games market.

GameStop chairman and CEO R. Richard Fontaine explained that Rhino's integration into the GameStop network would result in "operating synergies." That's business-speak for "no more 2-for-1 trade-ins."

Update: clarified revenue averages.
Confirmed: Rhino sold to GameStop [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 16:54:00 EST. With theft on his mind and in being approached by an employee of the rental store, he dashed out with reportedly up to 60 games, which come to a total worth of about $1,800, and escaped in a silver Mercury LeSabre bearing a rental car tag. At the time of the report, authorities had not captured the gentleman, and the story makes no mention of the suspect's face being caught on camera.

[Note: That is not an image of the store in question, just a generic Blockbuster Video]
Man takes PSP addiction too far originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jun 2006 11:00:00 EST.
