A week ago, we advised you to download Streets of Rage Remake as soon as possible. Over the weekend, developer Bomber Games removed the download for the expansive PC tribute, apparently at Sega's request, proving that we have incredible powers of foresight.

All download links have been removed from the website and forum, with moderator charco saying that "

SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site," asking users not to upload the file elsewhere, and stating that the team won't discuss the issue further on the forums.

According to "Bomberlink," the team did attempt to square the game with Sega's legal department last year, well in advance of the release -- though it doesn't appear to have helped. We've put an inquiry in with Sega to find out the current status of the game. Will it be back on the streets, or should we begin raging now?
Streets of Rage Remake taken down originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 19:00:00 EST. Developer Bomber Games started working on a game called Streets of Rage Remake in 2003, and only this week released the final version of the freeware PC game. We can only assume that Sega didn't take eight years working on the original Streets of Rage, so where did the time go in this project?

Well, it's less a "remake" and more of a hugely expanded, mostly new game. Remake, built entirely using new code, contains 103 stages, and all the playable characters from Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 (with new abilities), along with new characters. New enemies based on the Game Gear games and cover illustrations have been added to the lineup of punching bags. Boss Rush, Volleyball, AI partner mode, and other extras are also thrown in. Oh, and there's a level editor.

Check out a video of an earlier version after the break, and download the Windows game here before Sega's lawyers hit the Streets.
