In so many words, it said "suck it up and don't use a walkthrough" - a statement which many saw as reflective of a perceived "my way" attitude to game design.<br /><br />Others saw it more expectantly, knowing Blow to be a perfectionist and not one to offer hints on his games. He hates games that hold your hand. "Treating the player like a baby all the time, I don't like that," he told me during an interview last week at GDC.<br /><br />That's why he's designed his latest game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-wtiness"><em>The Witness</em></a>, to hold your hand just long enough to find the path. "What I do is I work really hard to not condescend the player and to not treat the player like they're stupid, but at the same time to follow good game design practices. This game has to be learnable, and there has to be tutorialization in it, but it's not patronizing tutorialization."<br /><br />Unlike <em>Braid</em>'s more linear pacing, <em>The Witness</em> is designed as an open world - albeit a very small open world - so that difficult puzzles can either be skipped (not all must be solved to reach the end) or passed by for later on. Blow said this was intentionally designed to respect the time of players. "It's more about crafting a small, heavily interconnected jewel that gives people the highest density experience, respecting their time that way. There's not gonna be a lot of walking around through empty lands in this game."<br /><br />Though the game is looking more complete than ever, <em>The Witness</em> has no set platforms or launch window beyond PC and iOS, and "some time in 2012." <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/the-witness-cares-about-you-more-than-you-know/">The Witness cares about you more than you know</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 06:00:00 EST. Instead, many documentaries choose to delve into the minds of their subjects, presenting not documentation, but something else entirely -- an up-close trip into the human psyche.<br /><br />During one such moment from <em>Indie Game: The Movie</em>, which I caught at a screening at the Sundance film festival, game designer Phil Fish states that if he couldn't finish his long-awaited game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fez"><em>Fez</em></a>, he would commit suicide. The camera remains on him for an awkward moment, and the line draws a number of uncomfortable chuckles from the audience. He seems to rethink his outrageous statement and then states once more: "I will kill myself."<br /><br />This attitude for the most part represents the majority of the film. Focusing primarily on the development and production of <em>Fez</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-meat-boy"><em>Super Meat Boy</em></a>, <em>Indie Game</em> is really the story of obsessed developers pouring their insecurities and hearts and souls into a game, without leaving much, if anything, for themselves.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/">Indie Game: The Movie</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/#4784544"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/indiegamethemoviecontrollerbyindiegamethemovie_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/#4784546"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/indiegamethemoviefezbyindiegamethemovie_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/#4784550"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/indiegamethemoviephilfishbyindiegamethemovie_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/#4784547"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/indiegamethemoviejonblowbyindiegamethemovie_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/indie-game-the-movie/#4784551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/indiegamethemoviephilfish2byindiegamethemovie_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/30/everythings-happening-now-indie-game-the-movie-at-sundance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Everything's happening now:' Indie Game: The Movie at Sundance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/30/everythings-happening-now-indie-game-the-movie-at-sundance/">'Everything's happening now:' Indie Game: The Movie at Sundance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 18:01:00 EST. It's getting to be that time of year where mushy, sentimental and "awww"-inducing chatter overwhelms all channels of media and fills your heart with a warm sense of home, <em>whether you like it or not</em>. For example: Reddit user Jungleradio gave his 80 year-old grandfather copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bioshock"><em>Bioshock</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-dead-redemption"><em>Red Dead Redemption</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid"><em>Braid</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/castlevania-symphony-of-the-night"><em>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night</em></a> for his birthday, with quaint, heartwarming results.<br />
<br />
Jump past the break for Grandpa Aaron's take on each game, and don't forget to tell your Aunt Suzy to bring Nana's twice-baked potato recipe to the next family reunion. <p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/05/grandpa-aaron-loves-bioshock-cant-wait-to-see-you-for-thanksgi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Grandpa Aaron loves Bioshock, can't wait to see you for Thanksgiving</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/05/grandpa-aaron-loves-bioshock-cant-wait-to-see-you-for-thanksgi/">Grandpa Aaron loves Bioshock, can't wait to see you for Thanksgiving</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 05 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST. OnLive is celebrating "Indie-pendence" Day with a massive sale on -- you guessed it -- a random selection of mainstream blockbusters and popular underground games.<br />
<br />
The sale includes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-asylum"><em>Batman: Arkham Asylum</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darksiders"><em>Darksiders</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/just-cause-2"><em>Just Cause 2</em></a>, a pre-order deal on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/deus-ex-human-revolution"><em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</em></a>, and of course an inundation of hit indie titles such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-maw"><em>The Maw</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/osmos"><em>Osmos</em> </a>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/amnesia-the-dark-descent"><em>Amnesia: The Dark Descent</em></a>. OnLive's <a href="http://www.onlive.com/games/featuredgames#&amp;sortby=alpha&amp;tab=sale_games">"Indie-pendence" Day Sale</a> runs through the completely unrelated day of July 4, so hurry and check out your options after the jump before this thing vanishes like smoke after a firework.<br />
<br />

There's still a ton of unanswered questions surrounding <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid">Braid</a></em>, the more philosophical of which will likely remain unanswered for a long, long time. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/humble-indie-bundle-2/">Humble Indie Bundle 2</a> -- which added <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/humble-indie-bundle-2-now-includes-humble-indie-bundle-1/">last year's bundle</a> during its promotion -- has raised over $1.8 million. The name-your-own-price, DRM-free set included indie darlings like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/machinarium">Machinarium</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/osmos">Osmos</a></em>, along with several others. <br />
<br />
Purchasers could decide whether their years of saved pennies went to developers, the <a href="http://www.eff.org/">Electronic Frontier Foundation</a> or the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/childs-play-2010">Child's Play Charity</a>. They could also provide a "humble tip" for the bundle's organizers.<br />
<br />
Humble Bundle organizers plan on releasing more detailed statistics later but, beyond the final sum, we know that there were 232,849 purchases, with an average payment for the 12-game bundle of $7.83. Windows operating systems made up a majority of the purchases, but Linux users offered up the most support with an average purchase of $13.76. If you're all good little boys and girls, the Humble Bundle might return next year with a new set of indie greats.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/humble-bundle-2-closes-earns-over-1-8-million/">Humble Bundle 2 closes, earns over $1.8 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Dec 2010 10:38:00 EST. "Humble Bundle" no longer seems like an appropriate name. In less than 24 hours upon release, the pay-what-you-want indie game collection <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/humble-indie-bundle-2-revealed-name-your-price-for-braid-machi/">Humble Bundle #2</a> earned over $500,000 in revenue and appears to be well on its way to beating the first bundle's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/12/humble-indie-bundle-extended-pulls-in-over-1-million/">seven-figure returns</a>.<br />
<br />
The Humble Bundle <a href="http://www.humblebundle.com/">website</a> offers an interesting look into purchasing trends by providing real-time stats. As of writing, over 70,000 people have purchased the pack, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/minecraft"><em>Minecraft</em></a> creator <span class="fn">Markus Persson, who paid an extraordinary </span><span class="fn">$2,000</span><span class="fn">, and Infinity Ward's </span><span class="fn">Robert Bowling, who went with a generous </span><span class="fn">$500 payment</span><span class="fn">. The average selling price for the bundle is currently $7 and change.<br />
<br />
The </span>Humble Bundle #2 includes five celebrated indie titles: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid/">Braid</a>, Cortex Command, Machinarium, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/osmos/">Osmos</a> and Revenge of the Titans.</em> Purchasers can divide their payments between the<span class="fn"> developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Child's Play Charity as they see fit.<br />

Looks like the organizers of the second annual <a href="http://www.humblebundle.com/">Humble Indie Bundle</a> are busting out the big guns for this year's charity drive -- the name-your-own-price, DRM-free package includes Jonathan Blow's time-twisting platformer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, the infinitely charming adventure game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/machinarium"><em>Machinarium</em></a>, the side-scrolling shooter <em>Cortex Command</em>, the super soothing (and equally pretty) <em>Osmos</em> and the tower defense-meets-RTS gem <em>Revenge of the Titans</em>. That's a whole lot of bang for your buck, or nickel, or <em>thousand bucks</em>.<br />
<br />
This year, purchasers can choose how much of their donation goes to four possible recipients: The games' developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/childs-play-2010">Child's Play Charity</a> or the Humble Indie Bundle organizers. Yes, you can not only customize <em>how much</em> altruism you're going to exhibit with your purchase, you can also customize <em>where</em> that altruism goes! Unless, of course, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/one-quarter-of-humble-indie-bundle-downloads-were-pirated/">you pirate it</a>, sending out <em>no</em> altruism to <em>nowhere</em>. You monster.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/humble-indie-bundle-2-revealed-name-your-price-for-braid-machi/">Humble Indie Bundle 2 revealed, name your price for Braid, Machinarium and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 12:35:00 EST. The Chaparral High School Alumni Theatre troupe of Parker, Colorado recently turned to a fairly unconventional source of inspiration for its summer project: A staged interpretive dance performance based on Jonathan Blow's time-bending indie darling, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/braid"><em>B</em><em>raid</em></a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/braid-reimagined-as-interpretive-dance-performance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Braid reimagined as interpretive dance performance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/braid-reimagined-as-interpretive-dance-performance/">Braid reimagined as interpretive dance performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 00:00:00 EST. Gamasutra wasn't able to get its hands on year-to-date PSN sales data directly from Sony, but it has <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27260/InDepth_North_American_PlayStation_Network_Sales_Analysis_January_2010.php">come up with some interesting conclusions</a> based on an unscientific look at ... leaderboard stats. The site broke down January's new releases, as well as a few other games that sold well last month, and the big debut of the month appears to be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hustle-kings"><em>Hustle Kings</em></a>, which added over 39,000 players to its ranks. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assault-heroes"><em>Assault Heroes</em></a> only picked up 754 new players, but given that it's a game that actually came out in 2006 on the Xbox, that's not a big surprise. PSN also offered up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/psn-thursday-10-for-10-sale-on-select-psn-games/">its "10 for '10" sale</a> in January, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uno"><em>Uno</em></a> came away from that event with a whopping 87,000 new players on its leaderboards. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid"><em>Braid</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/critter-crunch"><em>Critter Crunch</em></a> also did well, adding 20,000 and 17,000 new players to their leaderboards, respectively.<br />
<br />
Keep in mind that these numbers are far from official, and not complete anyway -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vandal-hearts-flames-of-judgment"><em>Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thexder-neo"><em>Thexder Neo</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/matt-hazard"><em>Matt Hazard</em></a> were released on PSN last month, and none of those games are included in this analysis, due to unreliable or nonexistent leaderboards. But it is probably fair to say that PSN had a pretty good month in January, especially with the games featured in its "10 for '10" sale. Casual PC game retailer MumboJumbo games <a href="http://www.mumbojumbo.com/game/pressreleases#">recently announced</a> a partnership with Number None to distribute puzzle-platformer <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a></em> to retailers. No specific date has been given for the game's arrival at retail, but we do know it'll have a $19.99 MSRP and will be available at "Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon.com, Fry's, and a number of regional retailers as well." A representative from MumboJumbo also told us that the game has shipped and should be on retailer shelves "by February 1."<br />
<br />
We're not exactly sure how a $20 release of <em>Braid</em> with a cardboard box is going to compete with the (at very least) less tactile and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/braid-other-pc-titles-on-sale-this-weekend-on-impulse/">often cheaper</a> digital equivalent, but we suppose it can't help to get the game into more markets. Now Target and Walmart game shoppers can be just as confused by its story! Oh we're just joshin' -- we kid because we <em>love</em>, ya know.<br />

<em>It's a holiday miracle!</em> Though there are a few intriguing items in <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/12/17/%E2%80%98heads-up%E2%80%99-playstation-store-update-17th-december-2009/">this week's PSN update</a> (such as the long overdue release of <em>Braid</em>, a demo for <em>Army of Two: The 40th Day</em> and <em>Beatles: Rock Band</em>'s "Rubber Soul" DLC), the highlight of this latest update is the <em>delectable</em> set of discounts. Some games have had their prices temporarily reduced, such as <em>Battlefield 1943</em> and <em>Burnout Paradise</em>. Others, such as <em>Puzzle Quest</em> and <em>The Cube</em>, have been permanently encheapened. Click past the jump to see the full list of additions and discounts!<br />

Though it lacks the glitz, glamor and booth babes of consumer-based expos, the Game Developer's Conference has plenty to capture the attention of the <em>cerebral</em> game enthusiast. The event's <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/news/gdc/gdc_2010_reveals_first_confere.html">official site recently posted a smattering</a> of the lectures, roundtables, and panels which will take place from March 9 - 13, showcasing the efforts of the creators of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brutal-legend"><em>Br&uuml;tal Legend</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, to name a few.<br />
<br />
These events are broken into tracks representing the various types of work that go into making a game. For instance, Naughty Dog's Richard Lemarchand will be leading a post-mortem of <em>Uncharted 2</em> as part of the Production Track. Double Fine's Peter Demoreuille and Drew Skillman will be talking about crafting the visuals of <em>Brutal Legend</em> for the Art Track. And Jonathan Blow is leading a discussion on implementing time travel in games as part of the sparsely populated Quantum Physics Phenomena Track.<br />

During the same week that <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a></em> finally discovers a point in time to arrive on the PSN, we can't help but notice that burlesque sensation Dita Von Teese has a theme for the PS3 and PSP available. Ms. Von Teese certainly makes a better theme than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/22/psn-thursday-the-time-for-trine/">Hot Pockets</a>, but we're just surprised to see the $2 item in the store. Now ... um, can we get a dynamic theme?<br /> <br />

It only took 15 months, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid/"><em>Braid</em></a> has finally found its way to the PlayStation Network. Jonathan Blow's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2008-braid/">critically acclaimed</a> puzzle-platformer may be late, but its time-shifting gameplay mechanics certainly make the old adage "better late than never" all the more <em>apropos</em>.<br /> <br /> The Hothead-developed port will be available on the North American PlayStation Store on November 12th, "with a European version to be announced shortly thereafter." The PSN version of <em>Braid</em> will cost $14.99, the same price as its XBLA equivalent.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/">Braid (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/#2421289"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-10-28_15-39-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/#2421288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-10-28_15-39-12-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/#2421287"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-10-28_15-39-12-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/#2421286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-10-28_15-39-12-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid-ps3/#2421285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-10-28_15-39-12-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/braid-coming-to-ps3-next-week-november-12/">Braid coming to PS3 next week, November 12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 12:32:00 EST. It's been a while since we've heard anything regarding <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a> </em>developer Jonathan Blow's next project, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/blow-points-finger-at-next-games-name-the-witness/"><em>The Witness</em></a> -- however, if a recent post on Blow's blog is any indication, the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/blows-next-project-to-be-quiet-philosophical-puzzle-explorati/">philosophical, and quiet</a>" game might be moving in an unexpected direction. <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=636">According to the post</a>, Blow is "hiring another programmer into the new company, to do very interesting work with full-body motion tracking."<br />
<br />
We contacted Blow to see if this new hire would be working on <em>The Witness</em>, and whether the motion tracking technology mentioned is Project Natal. He responded by saying he "can't talk about this right now," and added, "it may not even actually happen (depending on whether I can find someone qualified to do it!)." <br />
<br />
So, there you have it. If you've got experience with body movin' (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTQ3MNPxyfA">body, body movin'</a>), it sounds like Blow could use a hand. And an arm! And a torso. And a ... yeah, you got it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/jonathan-blow-hiring-full-body-motion-tracking-programmer/">Jonathan Blow hiring 'full-body motion tracking' programmer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 15:20:00 EST. Good prices come to those who dawdle, as Steam cuts two-thirds off the price of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em>, making the indie classic a steal at $5. Put it this way: The puzzles and gameplay are easily worth $5, with the academic self-pleasuring, overly-pretentious narrative being gravy that others had to pay an extra $10 for. <br /><br /><em>Braid</em> was one of our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2008-braid/">top games of 2008</a>, and with its price reversed so far, we really don't know what else we can say to convince you it's totally worth it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/steam-weekend-deal-brings-braid-down-to-5/">Steam weekend deal brings Braid down to $5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 02:00:00 EST. Steam is offering the "who's who" of independent video games in an incredible sale you'd be silly to miss. For $30, you can get 10 indie games via the service:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/audiosurf/">Audiosurf</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/igf-2009-nominees/1263610/">Blueberry Garden</a></li>

    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/world-of-goo/">World of Goo</a></li>
</ul>
There's a lower-budget $20 option as well, which only includes half the games above. Either way, you'll be feeding starving independent developers without having to break the bank. Oh, and most of these games are pretty fun, too. It's a win-win for everyone, so make sure you <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/indiesale">rush to Steam</a> before the sale ends on Monday, August 10.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/08/steam-offers-75-discount-on-indie-games-this-weekend/">Steam offers 75% discount on indie games this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 08 Aug 2009 02:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/jonathan-blow">Jonathan Blow</a> has revealed <em>The Witness</em> will be the name of his next game, and there's even a teaser site to go with the announcement. "Teaser site" is a bit generous of a term, it's a <a href="http://the-witness.net/">website</a> with some prose that reads like a lost page from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid's</a></em> between-level books. Clicking on the text will reveal another page, stating that the "exploration-puzzle game on an uninhabited island" will release in late 2011 on multiple platforms.<br /><br />Blow had previously mentioned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/18/blow-confirms-a-few-details-about-next-project/">some details</a> about his next title, calling it a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/blows-next-project-to-be-quiet-philosophical-puzzle-explorati/">"philosophical, and quiet" puzzle-exploration title</a>. As long as <em>The Witness</em> comes with an actual ending that wasn't designed to give academics something to write books about (that nobody will ever read), and leave everyone else scratching their heads, we'll be fine.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Added information about clicking on text.<br /><br />[Thanks, Fahd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/blow-points-finger-at-next-games-name-the-witness/">Blow points finger at next game's name: The Witness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 11:03:00 EST. There's only one reason for you to have not played Jonathan Blow's time-twisting puzzle-platformer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, and that's if you don't have an Xbox 360, PC or Mac. Considering you're <em>reading this right now</em>, we can assume that you can't use this as an excuse. Still, on the off-chance that you can, we've got good news -- <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/100/1009615p1.html">IGN is reporting</a> that Hothead Games has confirmed that the well-received indie title is coming to the PSN. You at least have a PS3, don't you? What, are you a <em>Colecovision</em> fanboy?<br /><br />Though IGN confirmed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/31/germanys-usk-braid-jumping-running-to-ps3/">the rumored port's</a> existence, no release date or possible PS3-exclusive features were mentioned. <div align="left">Jonathan Blow's time-manipulating puzzle-platformer, <em>Braid</em>, is probably best associated with Xbox 360. According to a listing on Germany's USK ratings board <a href="http://usk.de/">website</a> (discovered by <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=16919056&amp;postcount=1">NeoGAF user Fortinbras)</a>, though, the game -- which falls under the organization's fancifully named "Jump 'n Run" category -- is finally headed to PlayStation 3.<br /><br />Blow talked about the possibility of a PS3 version <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/ps3-release-of-braid-might-happen-wiiware-not-happening/">almost a year ago</a>, saying that it could happen after a "limited exclusive" with Microsoft had ended. There's no indication when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2008-braid/">our #5 game of 2008</a> will hit PSN, though it seems it will come via its PC publisher, Hothead Games. We've contacted Blow for more info; hopefully his answer comes running 'n jumping back to us soon.</div>

Following the pseudo-reveal of Jonathan Blow's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/blows-next-project-to-be-quiet-philosophical-puzzle-explorati/">next "philosophical, and quiet" puzzle-exploration title</a>, we contacted the cerebral developer to see what details we could discern about the project. He responded, and explained that he got the idea for the game a few months before the launch of <em>Braid</em>, but developed some trepidation about tackling "a more-expensive, harder-to-make 3D game." During those doubt-filled days, he worked on the prototype projects (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/25/braids-jonathan-blow-working-on-a-2d-rpg/">such as the 2D RPG</a>) we heard about.<br /><br />A few weeks ago, he began "working on the game in earnest," and is <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=605">now hiring</a> <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=603">3D artists</a> to help realize his vision. He assumes it will be another downloadable title, but isn't sure -- it's not set to drop for two years if his team stays on schedule, and who knows what platforms will be around then? Blow said we should hear more concrete details about the title as his team begins to produce some concept art and in-game visuals. We'd suggest keeping <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/">an eye on his blog 'til then</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/18/blow-confirms-a-few-details-about-next-project/">Blow confirms a few details about next project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. With stories claiming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em> creator Jonathan Blow was working on a handful of small titles from a variety of different genres (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/25/braids-jonathan-blow-working-on-a-2d-rpg/">including a 2D RPG</a>!), we can't help but feel a bit disappointed that his next project has been confirmed to be a "puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet, and is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive." Way to think outside of the box, Jon. (Oh, who are we kidding. It's going to be amazing.)<br /><br />This story comes to us by way of <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=605">a pair of</a> <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=603">now hiring ads</a> (for 3D artists, if you're interested) Blow posted on his on blog, looking for help on the aforementioned project, which he later confirmed to <a href="http://www.endsights.com/2009/07/17/braid-developer-moving-to-new-puzzle-exploration-project/#">gaming news blog EndSights</a> to be his next release. From what we can glean from the ads, the game will have a two-year development cycle, will place "a heavy emphasis on the way things look," and will feature a plot which will make non-philosophy majors feel very, very confused.<br /><br />We've contacted Blow to see if we can get any more details about the project.<br /><br />[Thanks, Art.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/blows-next-project-to-be-quiet-philosophical-puzzle-explorati/">Blow's next project to be quiet, philosophical 'puzzle-exploration game' </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 14:54:00 EST. Things are on the up and up for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-meat-boy/"><em>Super Meat Boy</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/its-time-to-get-on-the-edmund-mcmillen-bus/">Edmund McMillen</a>. After releasing <em>This is a Cry for Help</em> last year and subsequently announcing <em>SMB</em> for WiiWare, he put his indie cred on display for the world in <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/braids-tim-makes-time-for-super-meat-boy/">adding <em>Braid</em>'s Tim</a> to his upcoming game. And now, during a live video interview with <a href="http://www.bytejacker.com/blog/meat-boy-seeeeeeecrets-clips-from-last-nights-chat">Bytejacker</a>, McMillen <strike>revealed</strike> The Behemoth's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alien-hominid"><em>Alien Hominid</em></a> as another playable character!<br />
<br />
Quickly panning to his computer screen during the interview and teasing it, one of our wonderful readers snagged a screen grab so we could share it with the world. Now the real question: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castle-crashers"><em>Castle Crashers</em></a> characters playable as well? Hmmmm, McMillen? Hmmm? <br />
<br />
(We love you. Please?)<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> It was pointed out by a few astute Game Informer readers in the comments section that <em>Alien Hominid</em> was actually revealed as a playable character <a href="http://supermeatboy.blogspot.com/2009/05/alien-hominid.html">in a recent issue</a>. Sorry, folks! <br />

Luminary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shigeru-miyamoto">Shigeru Miyamoto</a> hasn't lost his shimmer in the eyes of game developers, with a recent industry poll finding the Nintendo icon to be without equal. The survey, commissioned by organizers of next month's <a href="http://www.developconference.com/">Develop Conference</a>, asked 9,000 devs to name their game development hero, with nearly a third of respondents pointing to Miyamoto as the man with the plan. <br /><br />The popularity contest also named id Software's John Carmack as the next most idealized developer, followed by Maxis and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/stupid-fun-club/">Stupid Fun Club</a> brainpan Will Wright. The top ten list of industry highlights was rounded out by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a></em> dev Jonathan Blow, who's likely too busy rewinding time (to see if he can somehow land higher on the ballot) to care.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/survey-developers-still-worship-miyamoto-blow-too/">Survey: Developers still worship Miyamoto, Blow too</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 11:15:00 EST. The developer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/hothead-games-to-bring-braid-to-mac-the-maw-to-pc/">Mac port</a> of the time-bending platformer, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em>, is now available, allowing Mac users to experience the <em>authentic</em> feeling of playing one of 2008's most unique games for the first time. (That is, if you didn't already play it on a Windows partition or something.)<br /><br />The press release says that this is "the first in a unique collaboration between Hothead and other top-notch independent developers to bring their award-winning titles to new gaming platforms," although the company's PC release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/hothead-games-to-bring-braid-to-mac-the-maw-to-pc/"><em>The Maw</em></a> predates this by several months.<em> Braid</em> is now available for <em>immediate</em> download via Penny Arcade's <a href="http://www.playgreenhouse.com/game/NNONE-000001-01/">Greenhouse</a> store for $14.95.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/mac-users-its-time-to-play-braid/">Mac users: It's time to play Braid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 14:00:00 EST. Oh, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/april-fools-09">April Fools</a>, how funny you can sometimes be. This year's April issue of Game Informer had one of the more comical tricks in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid II</a>,</em> the magazine's featured cover story. It would appear that Tim has spent his time between the first game and its sequel in the gym, totally getting ripped. With his delts and pecs in order, he can now finally set out to do what he always wanted to do: make time <em>his bitch</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/braid-ii-totally-rips-time-a-new-one/">Braid II totally rips time a new one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 May 2009 11:00:00 EST. Meat Boy isn't the only fleshbag to make an appearance in <em>Super Meat Boy</em> for WiiWare. Turns out that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>'s Tim will also be an <a href="http://supermeatboy.blogspot.com/2009/04/tim.html">unlockable character</a>. How did these two indie darlings collide and not produce so much heat as to create an insta medium-rare hamburger? Turns out that <em>Super Meat Boy</em>'s Edmund McMillen also did the character design for Tim -- so, you know, it's only natural he'd make an appearance in this game ...<br /><br />Much like Tim, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/super-meat-boy">Super Meat Boy</a></em> still has plenty of <em>time</em> to release details and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/super-meat-boy-ad-may-be-super-offensive/">potentially offensive ads</a> before its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/wiiwares-super-meat-boy-compared-to-flash-version-demo-promise/">launch later this year</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/04/29/tim-to-be-in-super-meat-boy/">ThatVideogameBlog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/braids-tim-makes-time-for-super-meat-boy/">Braid's Tim makes time for Super Meat Boy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST. We love how just a scrap of music can put you in the mood to play a game. Who can listen to the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2ZWTBAVJA8"><em>Oblivion</em></a> or <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjvo0SPAOiQ"><em>Halo</em></a> themes and not get the itch to pick up a controller? We don't know, but they're stronger than us by far.<br /><br />After 15 minutes of listening to the <a href="http://magnatune.com/artists/braid">recently compiled <em>Braid</em> soundtrack</a>, we're dying to take the game for another run, maybe even track down all those stars that we've been neglecting. Oh, and don't miss the two new remixed tunes, which take advantage of the game's time-twisting theme with hypnotic results.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=578">Braid blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/braid-soundtrack-now-available-with-remixes/">Braid soundtrack now available (with remixes!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 17:03:00 EST. Jonathan Blow has revealed that message board rumblings of a hidden level editor within the PC version of his award-winning independent title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em>, are true. Replying to chatter on the <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=8d068bb328099201a1cbc71696764ea5&amp;p=9619208#post9619208">Steam forum</a> [Via <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/map-editor-and-image-tool-coming-to-pc-version-of-braid-128577.phtml">Destructoid</a>], Blow revealed documentation for the editor would be released following an update to the game (which went live late yesterday) and "when more people have played/finished the game."<br /> <br /> In the meantime, initial editor information has been posted by Blow on the <a href="http://braid-game.com/news/?p=576">official Braid blog</a> to help gamers get started.The <em>Braid</em> PC level editor will allow gamers to extend the life of the puzzle title, with the potential to add "up to [another] full game," Blow wrote. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/gdc09-braid-the-200-000-idea/">developer/survivalist</a> also revealed future plans to add image importing from Photoshop into the game, allowing aspiring <em>Braid</em> designers to put their own graphics into their creations.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/">Braid</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/#320029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/braid6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/#320030"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/braid1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/#320031"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/braid2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/#320032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/braid3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/braid/#320033"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/braid4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Via <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58156">ShackNews</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/15/braid-pc-has-hidden-bonus-a-level-editor/">Braid PC has hidden bonus: a level editor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 08:30:00 EST. A brief announcement is in order. Now that <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a> </em>is neither 'cool' nor 'in,' all the haters are allowed to like it. Yes, <em>Braid</em> is out of the limelight so it's now officially okay for you to both play <em>and</em> enjoy it. Furthermore, for those that don't have a 360 and aren't quite ready to plunk down the cash for the PC version, which releases today, you can grab a <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/04/10/download-braid-demo/">free demo</a> from our brethren at Big Download.<br /><br />It's okay. Forget about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/25/braids-jonathan-blow-working-on-a-2d-rpg/">Jonathan Blow</a>, walking around like he owns the place. Just play the game and enjoy it, free of any social influence. You can even act like you knew how good it was <em>the whole time</em>. We won't tell anyone.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/11/braid-pc-demo-past-due-now-present-on-big-download/">Braid PC demo past due, now present on Big Download</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 00:02:00 EST. Fortunately, a typo in the announcement lets you experience a mysterious temporal puzzle <em>right now!</em><br /><br />Creator Jonathan Blow said that he is "delaying it slightly, til August 10th." But a delay of over four months isn't "slight!" What is going on here? He goes on to apologize for making people "wait an extra 10 days." But ... August 10 isn't ten days away from March 31! Things GDC 2009 taught us: Indie games aren't always cheap. During the "Braving the Stormy Waters of XBLA and PSN: Smaller is NOT Easier" panel, <a href="http://www.examiner.com/x-3707-LA-Gaming-News-Examiner~y2009m3d25-Braid-cost-200k-to-produce-Blow-reveals">Jonathan Blow revealed</a> that his critical hit, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em>, cost $200,000 to develop.<br /> <br /> Blow admits that development cost cuts could have been made, but his spending was to ensure a quality product. To maintain a high level of quality, Blow hired an actual artist instead of attempting to draw himself. Another large chunk of the budget? Survival. "A lot of that money was spent because I didn't want to live in a shack somewhere," Blow told the audience. According to the creator, development only requires a few essentials: "a PC, a dev kit and enough money to live on for the time it takes to develop.<br /> <br /> "If you can live for three years at your Mom's house, you can make a game for free," Blow joked. Wait... what'dja you say <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq6XS9Hwrv4">about our Mama</a>?!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/gdc09-braid-the-200-000-idea/">GDC09: Braid, the $200,000 idea</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 14:44:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">Castle Crashers</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/24/castle-crashers-title-update-now-available-finally/">recovered</a> from a 4-month gimp to be crowned the Xbox Live Arcade "Game of the Year" in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-live-arcade-awards-voting-kicks-off-march-3/">second annual</a> community voting awards. Somewhat surprisingly, <span style="font-style: italic;">Castle Crashers</span> also managed to nab "Best Co-op Mode" despite being virtually unplayable online for four out of its seven months in release. On its way to top honors, The Behemoth's beat-em-up notably <span style="font-style: italic;">beat</span> out its fellow indie nominee, <span style="font-style: italic;">Braid,</span> which was famously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/soulja-boy-tells-em-about-braid/">dismissed</a> by an American youth spokesperson.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Braid's</span> losing streak continued in the "Best Single Player Game" category, which was claimed by <em>Orange Box</em> cutout <em>Portal: Still Alive</em> (oh right, it has "exclusive" challenge maps), but Jonathan Blow's <em>timeless</em> effort did mange to win "Best Innovation" amid stiff competition. (We were certain<span style="font-style: italic;"> Kefling's</span> innovative "use of Avatars" was a shoo-in.)<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/xbla-awards-braid-cant-rewind-loss-to-castle-crashers/#winners">complete list</a> of awards and recipients is posted after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/xbla-awards-braid-cant-rewind-loss-to-castle-crashers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>XBLA Awards: Braid can't rewind loss to Castle Crashers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/xbla-awards-braid-cant-rewind-loss-to-castle-crashers/">XBLA Awards: Braid can't rewind loss to Castle Crashers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 18:52:00 EST. Based on info gleaned from Major Nelson's weekly Top Ten lists (sans data from the week ending February 2), <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/03/gamerbytes_analysis_top_10_xbl_1.php">GamerBytes</a> has compiled a list of the top selling Xbox Live Arcade titles in February.<br />
<br />
Topping the charts is the EA Sports Freestyle-branded arcade game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3-on-3-NHL-Arcade/">3-on-3 NHL Arcade</a></em> with strong showings from the pricey <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/R-Type-Dimensions/">R-Type Dimensions</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em> (following an end of the month <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/discounted-braid-re-launches-xblms-deal-of-the-week-program/">Deal of the Week sale</a>). Most surprisingly was the interest in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Minesweeper-Flags/">Minesweeper Flags</a></em>, which hovered within the top ten for two weeks in a row -- even though every Windows PC ships with a version of the game!<br />
<br />
Not faring as well last month were <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Death-Tank/">Death Tank</a></em> (the Sega Saturn <em>Duke Nukem 3D</em> mini-game remake of <em>Death Tank Zwei, </em>priced at 1200<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" />) and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Exit-2/">Exit 2</a></em>, which both failed to capture much attention upon release. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/The-Maw/">The Maw</a></em> was a notable entry, firmly holding onto a spot all month following a January release (which GamerBytes notes is a rare feat for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/XBLA/">XBLA</a> releases). Of course, the most important thing to take away from this is that none of the aforementioned titles were <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Peggle/">Peggle</a></em>, which is everyone's new virtual cocaine. We bow to our Unicorn masters.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/xbox-live-arcade-february-chart-toppers/">Xbox Live Arcade February chart toppers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. Another week in Xbox Live activity goes down in history, and snatching the crown for most played during the week of February 23 is none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war"><span style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty: World at War</span></a>. Been there, done that, we know, but in more exciting news, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/discounted-braid-re-launches-xblms-deal-of-the-week-program/">the <span style="font-style: italic;">Braid </span>price drop</a> really helped the game out, propelling it to be the top-selling Arcade title this week. Enjoy manipulating times, folks, and be sure to cruise past the break for the rest of this week's stats.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/cod-waw-tops-xbox-live-this-week-braid-sales-surge-thanks-to-p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CoD: WaW tops Xbox Live this week, Braid sales surge thanks to price cut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/cod-waw-tops-xbox-live-this-week-braid-sales-surge-thanks-to-p/">CoD: WaW tops Xbox Live this week, Braid sales surge thanks to price cut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 11:30:00 EST. We were jazzed to hear that Jonathan Blow's introspective chrono-manipulative platformer <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Braid/">Braid</a></em> would be making its way <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/xbla-darling-braid-lands-on-pc-march-31st-for-5-more/">onto PCs via Stardock's digital distribution service Impulse</a> -- though we wondered why Blow hadn't set up a wider launch platform for the computerfied adaptation of his XBLA indie hit. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/hothead-games-to-bring-braid-to-mac-the-maw-to-pc/">Hothead's agreement to bring the title to Macs</a> was a step in the right direction, but we've just received word of a huge movement to further propagate the plight of Mr. Tim -- a Valve presser just confirmed that <em>Braid </em>is on its way to Steam.<br /><br />It'll be hitting the popular digital distribution platform on March 31 (the same day as Impulse's <em>Braid</em> launch) at a price point of $14.99. That's a whole <em>four cents</em> more expensive than the title's cost on Impulse. Man, isn't that just like Valve? Always trying to <strike>nickel and dime</strike> penny and four-penny the little man.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/pc-braid-also-launching-on-steam-march-31/">PC Braid also launching on Steam March 31</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 15:41:00 EST.
