You know, we were just thinking that we'd love to be able to go back in time and check out Brave: A Warrior's Tale. Thankfully, Major Nelson informs us the game has just been added to Games on Demand for $30, so we don't have to take apart that DeLorean in our back yard. It's joined by Skate, which will set you back a much more pleasant $20 and features far less in-your-face advertising than the latest entry in the series.
Both Brave: Shaman's Challenge and Igor were available for demo at SouthPeak's booth -- two Puzzle Quest-inspired handheld puzzlers, and two games that are very clearly influenced by other puzzle games as well, to their benefit (as was Puzzle Quest).

Brave, which is played book/Brain Age-style, is a match-four falling-gem game -- with a twist. The twist is that your opponents are weak to certain colors and strong to certain colors. Breaking blocks in their strong colors actually heals them! You have to get your strategy on in order to succeed. Thinking about which colors you're supposed to break instead of grouping everything as it arrives changes the flow of the game significantly. I didn't get much of a look at the story, but I'm sure I'll be able to continue ignoring it.

Igor was a surprise. Not only had I never heard of the upcoming animated movie (starring John Cusack!) on which it is based, I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Why did I enjoy it so much?

Because it's Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Like, exactly. And I love Puzzle Fighter. There is an added layer outside of the main puzzle game. Instead of fighting animations playing out automatically, each color fills a meter for a certain attack, which, when filled, you then tap to attack. I didn't even really know about this thing, and now I want it!
E308: SouthPeak's puzzle pair originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. Brave: A Warrior's Tale has been announced for the PSP along with the Wii and 360 versions. The game is an "expanded reinvention of the original" PS2 game, Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer. For the life of us, we can't remember much about the old title -- perhaps this reinvention will indeed feel like a refreshing jaunt.

The game is set 70 years after the original title. Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak, explains that the game plays "as a flashback in which Brave describes the events of his life." It's a pretty interesting way to reinvent an old title. New content such as unlockables and graphical updates are the usual additions you'll be seeing in the new game. No set release date so far.

[Via press release]
PSP just got braver with Brave: A Warrior's Tale originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. We know that some of you probably tuned out as soon as you read the headline, but we need you to dust off your thinking caps and try to stay with us for this one. You know the PS2's diminutive Native American adventure Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer? Well, SouthPeak is bringing the game to the Wii, PSP and 360. "So," we hear you asking "it's a port, what's the big deal?" Just hold on there, prom king, the twist is coming.

The new version Brave: A Warrior's Tale is actually set 70 years after the original, and the content of the first game is served up in the context of flashback, with a few fresh levels thrown in for good measure, making it a ... sequort? Honestly, we can't tell you if we're offended or kind of intrigued.
SouthPeak bringing Brave: A Warrior's Tale to Wii, 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 15:55:00 EST. Basically, it's a variant of Columns and about a million other falling-block puzzle games: groups of two pieces fall, and the player rotates and slides the groups around to create lines of four or more pieces of the same color, which disappear when lined up.

As far as the adventure aspect of this puzzle adventure, IGN's Daemon Hatfield calls Brave "a linear adventure without all the RPG elements of Puzzle Quest." Combine that with awkward-sounding stylus controls and the game gets less and less interesting. But not so uninteresting that you don't want to watch the two videos posted after the break, right?

Brave: Previewer's Challenge originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 08:45:00 EST. This particular title is a puzzle game with a Native American theme and setting -- in fact, it even takes place in a land called "Native America." Following a boy named Brave who is trying to protect what he holds dear, this puzzler is also meant to have a deep and complex storyline.

Unfortunately, with the announcement of the game SouthPeak didn't elaborate on what kind of gameplay Shaman's Challenge will entail, so it's hard to tell whether or not this title is something to look forward to.
