Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror remastered for Android just in time

Revoultion Software's 1997 adventure game Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror is available now - in remastered form - on Google Play for Android devices, just in time for the greatest Mayan plot of all: the end of the world. That's in 10 days, at least according to the fabled, ancient Mayan prophecy. So, you know. Make plans now or something.

The Smoking Mirror follows the original Broken Sword: The Director's Cut. Protagonists Nicole Collard and George Stobbart uncover a mysterious stone relic and become entangled in a Mayan conspiracy that ties right into the (fast-approaching) apocalypse.

"When the original game was released in 1997, December 21, 2012, seemed a long, long time away," says Revolution co-founder Charles Cecil, ahead of the game's Android release. "I'm delighted that Android owners are now able to play the game, but I would urge them to hurry."

Revolution saw modern success with its Kickstarter for a new Broken Sword game, dubbed The Serpent's Curse, which raised $800,000 of a requested $400,000 in September.

Broken Sword: Director's Cut now free on GOG

You all did your part in downloading a ton of stuff from Good Old Games. Now, after the goal of six million downloads has been achieved, it's GOG's turn to reciprocate and give everyone Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars for free, until October 1 at 7:59 AM EDT.

Even better, you'll actually sort of get two copies of Broken Sword for free. The GOG version includes both the remastered Director's Cut, with an exclusive extra chapter, and the original version, in case you don't like your Broken Swords all fixed up.

Broken Sword 2 Remastered now available on GOG, on sale

The sequel to classic adventure game Broken Sword, The Smoking Mirror, is now available in a remastered version from GOG.com. We'd heard a while back that the game would be fixed up, after a remastered version of the original game sold well, and indeed the iOS version has been out for a while. The newer versions of the game offer the same excellent gameplay along with new graphics, music, animation, voiceovers and a revised hint system.

To celebrate, GOG is putting the whole Broken Sword series on sale, letting you pick up the first two remastered titles and the third game in the series (though not the fourth game, Angel of Death) for under $9. By itself, the remastered Broken Sword 2 is $4.19, or $6.99 on iOS.

New games flood App Store before impending holiday release freeze

The App Store is in constant danger of new release bombardments, sure, but many companies adhere to a regular, weekly bombing run beginning each Wednesday, through the wee hours of the night (UTC), dropping their new iPhone and iPad games on Apple's marketplace while many of us are snoozing. Last night was no exception -- actually, scratch that. It was exceptional!

Pending the start of the "iTunes Connect Holiday Shutdown" next Thursday -- a six-day lockout period when developers will be unable to release or update apps, including games -- an army of companies, armed with their big holiday releases (for little iDevices), launched a massive attack on the App Store last night. What began as a few warning shots yesterday grew into a full-on assault, led by Gameloft's crisp clones, NOVA 2 and Shadow Guardian, and Square Enix's surprise (and apparently rushed) port of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Even Sega couldn't resist launching a few more classics in Altered Beast and Sonic Spinball. And what's this ... Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3? Hey, if Street Fighter IV worked ...

Broken Sword 2 being fixed up for iOS release

With over one million copies sold (according to Revolution Software), the remastered iOS Broken Sword was enough of a success to warrant a similar treatment for the sequel. Wait, did we just say an adventure game sold more than a million copies in 2010? Wow!

Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror Remastered, due on the App Store this month, features updated graphics, an "interactive digital comic" by artist Dave Gibbons, and an in-game hint system, just like its predecessor. Revolution has also come up with a clever implementation of "cloud" saving to allow you to keep your progress across multiple devices: it uses Dropbox to handle save data.

Update: If you don't want to wait, and don't mind playing on computer, you can get the original version of Broken Swords 2 and 3, along with the updated Broken Sword, from GoG for $7.17 right now. That's $7.17 total.
