The <em>Guitar Hero</em> series touched many people, and not just by strapping plastic guitars to them. As the series reached its absurd heights of success, it caused more game developers to enter into the service of note charts and extreme rocker-dude 3D models.<br />
<br />
And now that Activision has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">stopped production</a> on the <em>Guitar Hero</em> series and closed that business unit, we can look back at how it affected the people who made it -- the companies who either moved on or were chewed up and spat out by the <em>Guitar Hero</em> monster.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/heroic-sacrifices-the-companies-behind-guitar-hero/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Heroic sacrifices: The companies behind Guitar Hero</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/heroic-sacrifices-the-companies-behind-guitar-hero/">Heroic sacrifices: The companies behind Guitar Hero</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 15:00:00 EST. Iowa-based Budcat Creations is being closed, Activision confirmed in a statement this afternoon. The company also revealed a "targeted reduction in jobs" at its Quality Assurance outfit in California. Budcat had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/activision-acquires-budcat-for-new-game-in-the-guitar-hero-fran/">owned by Activision since 2008</a>, when the developer was acquired for work on the <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise. According to the publisher, "approximately 88 positions, or approximately 1 percent of our global workforce" have been affected by today's layoffs -- Budcat is thought to comprise roughly 60 people, putting the California redundancies in the range of 25-35 workers.<br />
<br />
"We continue to streamline our music development resources to ensure that they are aligned against our slate and strategic goals," Activision explained. "Budcat has been a great partner to Activision and has created a lasting impact on the <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise." Aside from <em>Guitar Hero,</em> the studio also worked on the <em>Psychonauts</em> PS2 port, as well as <em>Medal of Honor: Vanguard</em> for Wii.<br />
<br />
Activision also notes it's "working to redirect those employees that are impacted to other parts of the company where possible, as well as offering them outplacement counseling services." Activision's full statement can be found after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/activision-shuttering-budcat-downsizing-california-qa-team/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision shuttering Budcat, downsizing California QA team</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/activision-shuttering-budcat-downsizing-california-qa-team/">Activision shuttering Budcat, downsizing California QA team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:56:00 EST. The multi-platinum rock band No Doubt has filed a lawsuit against Activision in a L.A. County Superior Court claiming its likeness was "transformed" into a "virtual karaoke circus act" in over sixty songs in the recently released music title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Band-Hero/">Band Hero</a></em>. According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2009/11/04/no-doubt-lawsuit-activision-band-hero-guitar-video-game-gwen-stefani-is-not-a-man/">TMZ</a>, No Doubt claims gamers were only supposed to be able to use their likeness with three of its own tracks; however, the band is available as playable characters through the game's entire music catalog.<br />
<br />
Of particular note is lead singer Gwen Stefani's displeasure that her likeness can be used to sing "Honky Tonk Woman" by the Rolling Stones -- a song which references sex with prostitutes -- using a male voice and mannerisms. For its "circus act" inclusion, No Doubt is seeking an injunction to halt the "unauthorized use" of the band's name and likeness, as well as an unknown amount of damages (aka <em>mad</em> monies). Seems like Activision can't keep rock stars happy, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/courtney-love-to-sue-activision-over-guitar-hero-5s-reanimated/">dead</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/bon-jovi-turned-down-inclusion-in-guitar-hero-5-supports-love/">alive</a>.<br />

Franchise-loving publisher powerhouse Activision Blizzard announced today that it has acquired Budcat Creations, the studio responsible for all <em>Guitar Hero </em>titles on the PlayStation 2 since <em>GH3</em>. According to the <a href="http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=346618">press release</a>, Budcat is "currently in development on a new game in the Guitar Hero franchise." Our guess is a PS2 port of the perpetually teased <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/guitar-hero-metallica-teaser-found-in-guitar-hero-world-tour/">Guitar Hero Metallica</a>.</em><br /><br />With the exception of one outlier (Aspyr Media, who ported <em>GH3</em> to PC and Mac), Activision Blizzard has now locked in what we affectionately dub the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/activision-blizzard-ceo-kotick-vivendi-franchises-lacked-poten/"><em>Guitar Hero </em>sweatshop</a>." With Neversoft at the helm, Budcat is working with PS2 and Vicarious Visions will be responsible for Wii and DS versions. At the time of acquisition, Budcat was also reportedly working on the Wii's <a href="http://www.majescoentertainment.com/news/display_news.php?id=280"><em>Our House</em></a> for publisher Majesco.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/activision-acquires-budcat-for-new-game-in-the-guitar-hero-fran/">Activision acquires Budcat for 'new game in the Guitar Hero franchise'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 11:59:00 EST. We hope you didn't get your hopes up regarding <em>Guitar Hero World Tour</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/rumor-guitar-hero-world-tour-full-set-list/">hypothetical set list</a>, which included songs from such bands as REO Speedwagon, Rob Zombie, and whole lot of Tool. Game Informer reports that both Activision and Red Octane have come forward, denouncing the list as a fraud. <br />
<br />
While some of the tracks listed will make it into the game, such as Van Halen's <em>Hot for Teacher</em>, the report calls the lion's share of the list "wishful thinking and pure speculation." We're sorry Tool fans, but you'll have to get your progressive rock fix somewhere else.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/25/rumorong-activision-red-octane-call-shenanigans-on-world-tour/">Rumorong: Activision, Red Octane call shenanigans on World Tour set list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 11:25:00 EST. That's why we suggest watching other people toil on TLC and HGTV instead of actually doing any work yourself. <br /><br />If you're dead set on constructing your dream home, though, you'll be happy to hear that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/majesco">Majesco Europe</a> and Budcat Creations (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blastworks">Blast Works</a></em>) are bringing that joyful experience to the Wii with <em>Our House</em>. This sim will have you shopping for raw materials at the "Home Store," building the house via remote-based <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minigame">minigames</a> (e.g. hammering in nails, sawing wood), and decorating your new rooms with the stuff you've bought. Finally, you can have the joy of tiling your very own home,<em> right in your very own home</em>. <br /><br />In addition to its party options with which you can compete against your friends in the different construction stages, <em>Our House</em> will allow you to share your completed designs with the "literal community-building feature" of its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/nintendo-wi-fi/">Wii Connect 24</a> Neighborhood Mode. This way, you can see whose taste is most likely to lower everyone's property value. We'll keep you updated with screenshots and a release date, once those are made available. <br /><br />[Via Press Release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/design-a-very-very-very-fine-house-with-our-house/">Design a very, very, very fine house with Our House</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. We spent yesterday going through the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/24/anniversary-aftermath-what-are-we-looking-forward-to/">big releases that've been announced for next year</a> so far -- <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-smash-bros-brawl/">Smash Bros. Brawl</a> and/or <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/friday-video-wii-fit-in-demos/">Wii Fit</a> likely topping your personal "must get" list -- but what about the second-tier games that don't usually receive much press or attention? <br />
<br />
Though <span style="font-style: italic;">we</span> haven't forgotten about the low-key releases, we've collected a selection of games and media to ensure that these titles stay on <span style="font-style: italic;">your</span> mind too! Read on for our top ten list of awesome 2008 games that you totally forgot about!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/25/anniversary-aftermath-next-years-awesome-games-that-you-forgot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anniversary aftermath: Next year's awesome games that you forgot about</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/25/anniversary-aftermath-next-years-awesome-games-that-you-forgot/">Anniversary aftermath: Next year's awesome games that you forgot about</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 25 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST.
