During last night's Microsoft's X10 press event, Bungie revealed the final box art for Halo: Reach. (Spoiler: It's real pretty.) And just as we were about to tile images of the cover to dress up our desktop backgrounds, Bungie released perfectly sized wallpaper images on its official site. Nab the wallpaper for widescreen setups, CRT screens, and even your iPhone right now! It's the closest you're getting to the Spartan-heavy adventure until the beta launches on May 3.
Sure, you could take Bungie's latest foray into Mythbusters territory as full on confirmation of Halo: Reach not having Project Natal support, or you could be like us and remain skeptical of the developer's still-not-straightforward wording. In a recent post on Bungie.net, the company attempted to answer a mess of "myths" about its upcoming Halo game, including "Myth: Reach is being built for Natal!" In answering, the post states, "Halo: Reach is NOT a Natal title and is being developed expressly with the traditional Xbox 360 controller in mind."

That said, rather than outright saying, "No, there's no support for Project Natal in Halo: Reach," Bungie instead chose to loosely word the answer. It certainly doesn't help the situation that multiple Bungie employees have expressed interest in seeing Natal incorporated into the Halo series, with Bungie prez Harold Ryan even saying he could "absolutely" see Reach specifically incorporate Natal. So, about that myth ...
Halo: Reach 'not a Natal title,' being made with a controller in mind originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 31 Jan 2010 15:30:00 EST. The anticipated second title update to the Xbox 360 power-house Halo 3 is scheduled to release on Tuesday, September 23. Bringing fresh achievements to the popular shooter as well as a host of new features to Bungie.net, the second update will also revamp the player rating system within the game as well as kick-start the September playlists which adds new variants of current maps into ranked games as well as retire classic gameplay variants like Rocket Race and Big Team Battle.

Some users will notice changes already made to Bungie.net but the changes will only become fully apparent when the update is released. Before our inbox becomes flooded on Tuesday with tips on broken updates there are a few things to keep in mind. Halo 3 ... pretty popular. According to Bungie's Luke Smith players may experience issues with everything from the playlists to actually obtaining the update -- a listing of possible Zero Hour scenarios can be found in the latest Weekly Update. In the update Smith also revealed one of the newly added achievements will not be available until September 25 also known as Halo 3's first birthday.

After a year of shelf-life and its battle for top seed in the Xbox Live rankings, what is your excitement level for the Halo 3 update?

[Thanks for everyone who sent this in]
Halo 3 update lands on Sept. 23 brings new features to B.net originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 10:15:00 EST. Seems like we're inching closer to that July 14th announcement Bungie is supposed to make today. Bungie.net has been updated with a new countdown, which refreshes with a new message:

Keep it clean

Please remain calm

Services will resume

No public access

Emergency lights active

Proceed with caution

What will it be? Halo Blue? Another Bungie Day has come and gone. As the famed developer celebrated their favorite day of the year with fans by treating them with a plethora of free goodies, Bungie.net regulars wrapped up an event meant to give something back. The mission: achieve 7 billion UNSC campaign kills in Halo 3 by Bungie Day, rounding out the day to a perfect '7' overall. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. As of today the goal is a little under 50 million kills shy of the 7 billion mark.

We commend the community's effort and sympathize, considering we added a few kills in the pursuit of 7 ourselves. While the goal wasn't achieved, B.net users proved with their passion and dedication that it is one of the best gaming communities in the world. Great job everyone.
UNSC kill count just shy of 7 billion goal originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 11:15:00 EST. In preparation of releasing Halo 3 one of the small additions to Bungie.net was a counter that tallied the total amount of UNSC Campaign kills. Early last week the kill count surpassed the world's total human population which, according to the US Census Bureau PopClock, is estimated at 6,705,451,100 while the Bungie.net counter currently reads 6,795,062,952 kills.

While reaching the milestone in less than a year is impressive, a group of loyal fans decided the achievement wasn't enough. With Bungie Day creeping up slowly, users on the Bungie.net forum are banding together in an effort to reach 7 billion UNSC Campaign Kills before July 7.

Looking to aid in the quest? Simply fire up Halo 3 and play through the campaign, clocking in as many kills as you can. Cause when you're on the go and you just need to know what your total ranked kills are in Halo 3, you don't want to futz around Bungie.net on your gimped mobile browser. Nope, you can bust out your iPhone, load up www.ihalostats.com and lust over the number porn that Bungie's collecting from each and every match in a specially formatted web-app. You know what we love most about this? That some random guy made a custom version of Bungie.net for your iPhone while Microsoft's Mobile Live Anywhere remains "a bridge to be built."

[Thanks, Veronica]

Gallery: iHaloStats

iHaloStats: Halo 3 stats for your iPhone originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 21:56:00 EST. This of course makes all of us stat, file share, medal and Bungie.net users grin, because lately the website has been a bit slow and delayed with Halo 3 updates. Maybe if we all chipped in for Bungie Pro the tech crew could afford to add more servers, more capacity, and more horsepower so our Halo 3 stats and figures would update before the games ended! Wait a second ... Microsoft is paying the bills over there, they should be hooking up new servers like there's no tomorrow.
Bungie.net servers get beefed up for Halo 3 stats originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 13:00:00 EST. Among the new Bungie.net features (of which all can be seen after the break) are ways of sharing videos and screenshots, voting on the community's best, keeping track of your campaign stats and keeping track of your multiplayer stats as well. Speaking of which, multiplayer stat tracking Halo 3 is off the hook, crazy insanely crazily detailed to the twelfth power. Seriously, the new Bungie.net's Halo 3 stat system blows Halo 2's out of the water and around the moon. And since there's too much to mention we advise looking after the break to read all the new upgrades and making the jump to check out a the full interview and a few screenshots too. The new and improved Bungie.net will roll out this Wednesday, prepare your eyes and mind ... it's going to be an information overload.

Oh, and did you notice there will be special Bungie.net medals? Oh yeah!
Continue reading New Bungie.net previewed and launches Wed

New Bungie.net previewed and launches Wed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Sep 2007 14:00:00 EST. The multiplayer medal, aptly named "Cheneymania!", is earned when a player kills ten others, with a shotgun, and without dying. A feat Mr. Cheney would definitely be proud of, because we all know how experienced he is with a shotgun. Birdshot FTW!

Update 1: Looks like Bungie was feeling the political heat and changed the name of the Cheneymania! medal to Shotgun Mania. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Update 2: They changed the name again. It's now called Open Season! Over on Bungie.net (and kindly embedded above) is nearly four minutes of Halo 3 beta action. It's complete with lasers, shooting, explosions, jumping, equipment items and is a sight to behold. But there is a point to their little video other than just showing off beta in all its glory. The video is also meant to feature Microsoft employee MrJukes (who has the prestigious honor of logging the most Halo 3 alpha/beta games to date) and all his Halo talent. And so, if you're interested in more than the video, Bungie.net posted a little interview with MrJukes after the jump. But back to the official video. Did we mention that the entire video was created using Halo 3's saved game feature? Oh, did we mention that seeing a Mongoose fly 20 feet in the air over the main entrance simply by driving over a portable gravity lift made us wet ourselves? We didn't? Well, yeah ... it's that good.
Bungie's Betalicious Halo 3 video originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2007 02:15:00 EST. Yesterday, over on Bungie.net, they put up a little warning post to current Halo 2 players stating that they were adding new servers and that some game stats may get lost during the work. They then went on to say that these shiny new servers will also be running and logging all of our future Halo 3 beta and Halo 3 fun. But wait, did you just read that? Bungie is adding brand new game servers that'll support the Halo 3 beta! Holy cow! That means the Halo 3 beta will be releasing in like weeks, no days ... wait, minutes or even seconds! Or not, because soon after the servers went live Bungie updated their post by saying that, "this was just a routine server upgrade, similar to when we upgraded the web servers a couple weeks ago, and isn't a hint of imminent changes in the beta status". So, we guess the new servers aren't official confirmation of anything beta related. It was just our inner fanboys yearning for Halo 3 beta news and nothing more than that. What a sobering thought.
Bungie adds shiny new servers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Apr 2007 12:00:00 EST. In Bungie's latest Weekly Update, Frankie went into greater detail with regards to Tombstone and Desolation. He complimented Certain Affinity's ability to bring Hang 'Em High and Derelict successfully to Halo 2's gameplay changes from that of Halo. There was obviously a lot more thought put into the changes than just changing the textures and taking away the roof, as the map also features fall damage, which we believe is to be exclusive to that map at this point. As for Desolation, it's been streamlined for competitive play and features grav lifts, ramps around the perimeter, as well as face lifts, moving from an abandoned spacecraft to an open forest.
Bungie talks Halo 2 maps originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 19:15:00 EST. So, how does the Bungie team deal with all the internal pressures, development process, and stay on track? In a Next Generation interview, Bungie's own Frankie says that compared to Halo 2 the whole project is" well managed, it's well scheduled, and it's a pretty happy environment". Frankie also talks about what the main focus is right now and how they are polishing, refining, and adding layers and layers of goods onto Halo 3's framework. He also mentions that they do indeed have a hard date when they have to push the Halo 3 beta out the door (which is soon), but doesn't know when it'll make it into the public's hands other than a rough "this Spring". Halo 3 downloadable content talk and insightful interview banter can be read after the jump.

[Thanks, Eric]
Frankie talks Halo 3 dev process originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Mar 2007 14:30:00 EST. ZDNet.com then received emails from Xbox Live members confirming that their accounts have been taken over and that everything from fraudulent charges on their account to password changes occurred. So far Microsoft has somewhat admitted to the problem, but hasn't been overly helpful. There has been no official word from Microsoft, but in a phone conversation with a Xbox Live Tech they said that "hackers have control of Xbox live and there is nothing we can do about it".

Have you noticed anything screwy with your Xbox Live account or Windows Live ID? So far we haven't heard anything from the fanboy community, making us believe this is a much more isolated problem then ZDNet.com makes it appear. But we definitely think Microsoft needs to either come out and admit to the problem and tell us what happened or squash this over-zealous rumor. This whole hacking problem further begs the question; why can't hackers and gamers live in harmony?

Update 1: This mystery has been solved!

[Via Digg]
Some Xbox Live accounts hacked [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 10:45:00 EST. While the previous incarnation of Bungie.net was revolutionary for its time, that was 3 years ago, and the latest takes it to the next level. To commemorate this transformation, the boys (and princess) of Bnet posted an interview with Lead Web Developer, Chris Gossett and Tom Gloconda (aka Achronos) about the revitalized look and feel of the site as well as features that have been added in preparation or Halo 3's beta and retail release this fall. The interview ended with some fun stats about Halo 2 for us to ponder, like how 4.7 million Gamertags have played in over 670 million games, although they didn't tell us how many of those were from the one month trial cards. What do you think of the new design and interface?

[Via HBO]
Bungie.net gets facelift originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 00:30:00 EST. While Bungie's Weekly Update had a slew of goodies for you to get excited about Halo 3, they also touched on the $30 increase in price for the Legendary Edition. They more or less apologized for the misleading initial price point, and assured us that the final product will be definitely worth every penny, especially to those who are die hard Halo fans. They even revealed that the Legendary Edition is limited enough to warrant Bungie staff pre-ordering their own copies, and that each one is individually numbered. So, with that coming from them, does it change your opinion on the thirty dollar discrepancy?
Bungie comments on Legendary price point originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 13:30:00 EST. Well, according to this week's Bungie Weekly Update we'll be able to write off that problem in Halo 3. Frankie says that the AI controlled marines who fight by your side will be a lot smarter and will actually take hints to where they should be shooting simply by knowing where you are looking. Point your camera to the right and the gunner will shoot to the right, storm straight ahead and the gunner will unleash death bullets in front of you. Better AI always rocks.

The other interesting news from this week's update is a promise that we'll get to see some of the behind the scenes work that went into creating the Legendary Edition of Halo 3, including how the spartan helmet case came to be. Frankie also dropped an interesting tidbit referring to why the Limited Edition includes an art book that the holy grail Legendary Edition doesn't. He says that "Legendary Edition purchasers will be pleased to know that they will not have to live without that content at all". Interesting, no? Okay, this is getting too long. Just make the jump and read all the new newness that is Halo 3.
Bungie adds vehicular AI into Halo 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. In the past, a bunch of people have negatively critiqued Halo 3's prettiness factor (though, we've only seen leaked alpha screen grabs), saying that the game should look a lot better. Frankie reinforces that they have

"gone to great lengths to make sure that the new game retains the 'Halo' aesthetic. It still looks like a Halo game, but just rendered with vastly more detail and content and some visual effects that simply weren't possible on Xbox"

So, we aren't going to be seeing Gears of War style graphics or that same art style ... it'll still be Halo, just a more shiny, pretty, and curvaceous version. Moving on. Do you remember the talk of the A-hole button? It's Halo 3's vastly improved and easier way to mute annoying kids in multiplayer. We now know the exact button combo to execute the muting frenzy, which could take less than a few seconds for some players. So, to mute a person in multiplayer, simply press the BACK button, use the right thumbstick to highlight the player, and press X ... that's it! What a convenient process that's entirely separate from and quicker than the Xbox 360 guide. Make the jump for a few more Halo 3 information nuggets, but don't let the Bungie.net webmaster see you ... he's a drunken gorilla maniac who blames everyone else for his problems. It's sad really.
Bungie keeping that Halo "aesthetic" originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Mar 2007 12:15:00 EST. In it, Frankie discusses many things, from Halo 3's campaign AI to Marty's award winning music. But what we love to hear about is how the game looks, how the world will interact with every multiplayer footstep we take, and how each blade of grass will sway. Frankie's water effects are coming along nicely, as the water reacts to whatever is in it, can get muddied, and could possibly move weapons (or bodies) down the river current. How cool is that? We also get a hint to where one of the new Halo 2 maps will be located, as Frankie tells us that "one map features some awesome monkey noises". Could it be in a Brute forrest or at the San Diego Zoo? We'll leave it up to you to do the speculating. Phew ... there's just too much information in the is weekly update for us to list, so we're making you read the other nuggets of information over at Bungie.net. It's officially called the Type-25 Carbine, rocks two tungsten-alloy bayonets, and can quickly rip its target to shreds. According to soldier's remarks we learn that the Spiker is relatively heavy, bulky, and acts similar to the SMG. One good thing this dual-wielding wonder has going for it is that there isn't any recoil, so its automatic shots will a little more accurate. We really hope the Spiker adds more variety to the current weapon set and gels nicely with the others. Nobody would want an overly powerful, spike shooting, death stick of melee horror now would we? Ahem ... now would we?
Halo 3's Brute Spiker dissected originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 05:00:00 EST. To sum up his argument, he feels that Microsoft is "whoring" out the Halo franchise, making it too commercial, and tainting the Halo that we all love so dearly. Yes, we agree that Halo has gotten much more commercial, but that's what happens when a franchise reaches the popularity Halo has. One could argue that creating action figures, laser guns, or offering a beta in Crackdown is overkill, but an equal argument would be that this mass marketing feeds fan's appetite for all things Halo. Collecting action figures of your favorite video game, possibly playing Halo laser tag with your son, and getting the chance to play Halo 3 multiplayer before the game releases all wouldn't be possible if Microsoft didn't market Halo the way it has. And to be ashamed of being a Halo fan, because of the marketing? We'd consider checking your Halo fanboy membership card, because it may have expired. Let's all just breathe, be proud that we have one of the biggest FPS franchises, and have confidence in Bungie that they won't let anything happen to our Halo.

[Via HBO]
Is the Halo franchise working the streets? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 24 Feb 2007 15:00:00 EST. We're finally getting to a point where we get actual juicy details on Halo 3 from Bungie's Weekly Updates. This week's deep fried nuggets of information include the revealing of the first promotional material for Halo 3 (see above). According to Bungie, this marketing goodness is the first in a series that will be coming out throughout the year, similar to Halo 2's campaign with the whole orange background thing. Also note that it does read "Fall 2007" ... nice. Frankie also mentions that progress is being made on the campaign front, that the Halo 3 beta will not begin next week upon Crackdown's release, and that Bungie.net is getting an overhaul. He also posted the current default controller layout for Halo 3, dissecting each and every button and what each is used for. Though, Frankie makes it very clear that things could change and that the mysterious "X" button could be moved too. We're interested in how talking in multiplayer will work and currently there is a scheme using the d-pad, but he also mentions that it is in the extremely early stages of how the function will work. Please Bungie, make it so we don't have to push a button to talk, we can deal with loud people with our A-hole button. Go ahead and make the jump to get your weekly dose of Halo 3 knowledge.
Halo 3 materials and control scheme, oh my! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Feb 2007 07:00:00 EST. Our heads are spinning in anticipation and our questions have been growing daily. But that's when Bungie steps in to clear up some of the confusion, because they are the cool cats of the gaming industry. At Bungie.net you'll find a newly posted Halo 3 beta FAQ where they answer some questions (and leave a few still lingering) about the beta. We now officially know that there will be no NDA attached to the beta (that's one less worry for Richard), that the beta will be mostly a technical stress test, we'll get to see what the mysterious "X" button does, that matchmaking will be the standard Halo party system, and there won't be multiple joining "phases" to the beta. Everyone who won the contests in phase 1, phase 2 or bought Crackdown will go on at the same time, friends and family get to lay down the "early play" card. Lots of good stuff, but still no word on when the beta will start or how long it will last.
Bungie answers our Halo 3 beta questions originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 12:15:00 EST. You may have failed at phase 1 of the sign-up process, but your dreams of winning the Rule of Three are still a possibility. And soon you'll find out if you were one of the first 13,333 to make it in. Fanboy readers are reporting that they have received a confirmation email from Microsoft telling them that they have made it into the Halo 3 beta via the Rule of Three program. We've posted a copy of the email just in case your supposed best friend sends you a fake beta confirmation email, getting your hopes up, and ultimately resulting in you being the laughing stock of the planet. We wouldn't want that now would we? It's time to brag again fellow fanboys, who made it into the Halo 3 beta and who's going to be buying Crackdown?

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
Continue reading Halo 3 Rule of Three beta invites arriving

Halo 3 Rule of Three beta invites arriving originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 01:05:00 EST. Hot off the screen grab black market, we've received some fresh Halo 3 alpha screenshots for your viewing pleasure. German website Evo-X posted seven un-seen screen grabs of the Halo 3 alpha build. And surprisingly enough, the quality of the shots is pretty good. From these new screens we noticed the HUD has a slight concave effect and can clearly see the new spike grenades situated on the top left. There are also a few shots that showcase a letter/number combination over teammates heads, which is either their login name, some sort of alpha crud, or has something to do with the rumored military rank. Ok, enough reading already! We're proud to present all seven leaked Halo 3 alpha screen grabs after the jump ... but remember guys these are shots of the alpha version.

Update 1: It looks like Evo-X has crippled under the server stress. In this week's Bungie Weekly Update Frankie reveals that they've been recording dialog for the game including the voice of Cortana, Jen Taylor. This time around Jen is getting the chance to flex her acting muscles, because Cortana is a little darker and more dramatic in Halo 3. Everyone at Bungie nearly wept during Jen's recording session ... oh how we love you Cortana.

Bungie is also polishing weapon animations and revealed that they are implementing the "A-hole button". And what is this A-hole button we speak of? Well, you know those annoying Xbox Live members who refuse to be quiet or say something constructive, right? Well, for Halo 3 Bungie is implementing an easier and quicker way to mute unruly Live members, something we're welcoming with open arms. Frankie also talks about a new Halo 2 playlist, new tshirts, and a new Halo audiobook ... just make the jump and get learned.
Bungie Weekly Update: How we love thy Cortana originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Feb 2007 08:00:00 EST. But Stuntmutt isn't all that impressed by this new feature, because he has seen it before in Halo 2. You know, super jumping and getting up ... just check out the comic to get what we are talking about. Also, has anyone been religiously playing Halo 2 for the past few months and know whether the modding/cheating community has taken a vacation? We ran into a few cheaters when working on the beta invite, but is it as prevalent as it was before?
Halo 3's adjustable gravity has been done before originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 20:00:00 EST. With team names like Army of Dorkness, Makin' Webs Is for Suckas, Mancannons and Pwncakes ... this should be good. They played games like Halo 3, Gears of War, Wii Bowling, Age of Empires, Worms, Guitar Hero, and Pictionary and it looks like Frankie's team kicked BLAM when it came to Halo 3. But you can't throw a gaming tournament without food, and this get together was no exception. Over 30 pizzas, 8 dozen cookies, 2 kegs and 5 gallons of coffee were consumed that day. Make the jump for a detailed look at the day's events, the winners, and who ended up flailing on the floor in a whiny tirade. Note to self, Fanboy Towers definitely needs to increase its snack budget.

Bungie's Winter Pentathlon roundup originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 14:00:00 EST. Bungie's pentathlon is a yearly event that pits Bungie's finest against eachother in an all out death match-o-fun. With events including Gears of War, Halo 3, Pictionary and Wii Bowling ... we can't help but be a little jealous. Let us in the pentathlon Bungie, we'll pwn you at Gears! Anyway, this week's update wasn't all about the pentathlon, oh no. We received confirmation that there will be over 80 HaloClix released this September! Little Halo ActionClix, we're giddy with excitement. There wasn't much more news than that, but we still recommend making the jump to read the rest of Frankie's Weekly Bungie Update ... it's so good.
Halo ActionClix and a pentathlon, oh my! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 13:00:00 EST. In this week's edition we learn that Halo 2's matchmaking will be revamped next month with Team Swat coming back in an un-ranked state. There are also a few tidbits of info surrounding how the alpha for Halo 3 is progressing, complete with a fully dotted "death map" for Snowbound. But the exciting news is that Frankie dropped a hint that a new feature or "thing" will be included (99% certain) in Halo 3. Frankie goes on to say, "the MLG boys will sweat blood with excitement. They will all still moan at me about how we nerfed the pistol from Halo One, but this new thing will at least cheer 'em up for a few months. Or years. It's that big". Why must you do that to us Frankie? Ok fanboys, time to put on your official speculation hats and get a speculating.
Bungie Weekly Update hints at cool new "thing" originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Jan 2007 12:15:00 EST. It is called the Type-2 Antipersonnel Fragmentation Grenade or spike grenade for short. The spike grenades will stick to any surface ... concrete, glass, rock, human flesh, and covenant shields just to name a few. Once stuck into a surface the grenade will explode shooting out spiky shrapnel pieces. But the explosion isn't spherical like the plasma grenade, oh no. The spike grenade shoots out projectiles in a cone shape perpendicular to the surface it hits. Throw it at a wall in front of you and spikes will shoot right back at you. Throw it on the ceiling and projectiles will rain down from above. Think of all the tactical maneuvers you can accomplish with this little guy! But don't worry old school fans, the frag and plasma grenades will be making encore appearances in Halo 3. Can you think of any other situations or how you'll be using these spiked beasts?

[Thanks, dizzle]
Oh the possibilities. Above all the meat and potatos of Frankie's update is that next week there will be some BIG Halo 3 news revealed. I can't help but think that the BIG news coming out next week is due to a certain console being launched, just call me crazy. I for one can't get enough Halo 3 news, who's with me on that?
Frankie is obsessed with water originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 Nov 2006 03:00:00 EST. Adorned with huge Halo posters, action figures, books, and even an oddball skull, the room is a Halo sanctuary. The crown jewel of his obsession is the hand painted mural on the rear wall.

The technophiles among you will probably cringe when you see his TV lodged in the fireplace, though.
