<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/burnout-crash"><em>Burnout Crash!</em></a> will bring its top-down pileups, Kinect collisions and titular exclamation point to PSN and XBLA in <a href="http://www.ea.com/uk/news/burnout-crash-is-coming-august-2011">August</a>, according to an announcement on EA's UK news site. EA originally announced the downloadable auto pinball title as a "fall" release.<br />
<br />
Another revelation about <em>Crash!</em> was provided by Criterion creative director Alex Ward at EA's summer showcase. Ward told <a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/giant-bomb-the-ea-summer-showcase-2011/17-4507/">Giant Bomb</a> that the project started on Wii before it became <em>Crash!</em>. "It was a user-created game where you drew a road with the wand, and we thought, if we made Crash Mode, you could make it all yourself." Criterion worked on that until discovering that it was "quite boring."<br />
<br />
Update: The <a href="http://www.ea.com/uk/news/burnout-crash-is-coming-2011">announcement</a> on EA's site has replaced all references to "August" (and the one out-of-place reference to "Winter") to just "2011."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/burnout-crash-hits-home-in-august-was-once-a-wii-game/">Burnout Crash hits home in August, was once a Wii game [update: now '2011']</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 09:55:00 EST. We first heard about "Burnout Crash" this spring through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/esrb-burnout-crash-to-feature-cartoony-mayhem-lobster-attack/">ESRB</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/burnout-crash-is-action-arcade-style-set-in-crash-city/">Australian</a> ratings, but EA has kept mum about the downloadable racer -- until now. The publisher officially announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/burnout-crash"><em>Burnout Crash! </em></a>for PSN and XBLA, coming fall 2011.<br />
<br />
The downloadable top-down racer is based on previous <em>Burnout</em> games' Crash Mode, and offers rewards for "causing traffic chaos by crashing into cars, triggering explosions and destroying everything in sight." 18 different "crash junctions" will challenge players' ability to wreck stuff.<br />
<br />
And should you desire a new way in which to wreck stuff (like your living room),<em> Burnout Crash!</em> will include a Kinect mode on XBLA, in which "two teams use gestural controls to play on one television in a party battle!"<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-crash-xbla-psn/">Burnout Crash (XBLA/PSN)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-crash-xbla-psn/#4280181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/burnout7701_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-crash-xbla-psn/#4280182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/burnout7702_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-crash-xbla-psn/#4280183"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/burnout7703_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/burnout-crash-spins-series-off-to-xbla-psn-and-into-traffic-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burnout Crash! spins series off to XBLA, PSN, and into traffic this fall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/burnout-crash-spins-series-off-to-xbla-psn-and-into-traffic-t/">Burnout Crash! spins series off to XBLA, PSN, and into traffic this fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 16:42:00 EST. Last week, a rating appeared for the unannounced "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/04/burnout-crash-classified-by-aussie-ratings-board/">Burnout Crash</a>" on the Australian classification board's site. We followed up with the board to find out more about EA's mysterious "multiplatform" game, and received the following synopsis of the submitted content: "An action arcade style game set in the fictional world of Crash City. The aim of the game is to cause as much damage as possible to traffic and buildings by crashing a car into them."<br />
<br />
Essentially, it's the idea behind "Crash Mode" in previous <em>Burnout</em> games, or <em>Paradise</em>'s "Showtime." And if this single mode is the sole focus of <em>Burnout Crash</em>, it's likely to be a smaller downloadable game. It's also likely to be a bit depressing, if the setting is a city so beset by car crashes that it has "Crash" in the name.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/burnout-crash-is-action-arcade-style-set-in-crash-city/">Report: Burnout Crash is 'action arcade style', set in Crash City</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 11:00:00 EST. Criterion may have swiped development duties for the upcoming installment in EA's ancient racing franchise, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit">Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit</a>, </em>but it seems the franchise will land in familiar hands for the series' next iteration. In a recent interview with <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-02-the-future-of-need-for-speed-revealed-interview">Eurogamer</a>, EA senior vice president Patrick Soderlund responded to a question about whether Black Box would be behind the wheel of next year's <em>Need for Speed</em>, saying "you can assume that, yes." Later, he cheekily implied that one could <em>safely</em> assume that.<br />
<br />
On the off-chance that you don't need the <em>Need for Speed</em>, Soderlund also shared a bit about the future of EA's other flagship racing franchise: <em>Burnout</em>. Soderlund explained, "we haven't made a decision to whether Burnout does this or that, but it's not dead for sure, no," adding that the publisher is currently "prioritizing what we want to do." Here, allow us to help arrange those priorities: <br />
<br />
<ol>
    <li>A spiritual successor to <em>Burnout 3: Takedown</em></li>
    <li>A new, non-motion-controlled <em>SSX</em></li>
    <li>Everything else</li>
</ol><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/02/next-need-for-speed-coming-from-ea-black-box-burnouts-not-dead/">Next Need for Speed coming from EA Black Box, Burnout's not dead</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. You probably got that idea already, considering nothing but the sound of crickets and tumbleweeds have emerged from Criterion HQ since the release of the last bit of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><em>Burnout Paradise</em></a> DLC, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/big-surf-island">Big Surf Island</a>. A <a href="http://twitter.com/CriterionGames/status/7986040769">tweet</a> from the company account confirms our fears, stating there will be "<span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">no more" DLC and that the company </span></span><span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">"did WAY more than everyone else."</span></span> That's all well and good, but it doesn't slake our need for more <em>amazing</em> DLC!<br />
<br />

You gotta give it up to Criterion Games. Throughout the lifespan of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><em>Burnout Paradise</em></a>, the developers at Criterion worked their buns off to give us all kinds of juicy DLC, from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/criterion-games-takes-us-on-a-tour-of-burnout-paradises-big-sur/">a new island</a> to explore, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/joystiq-review-burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/">new game mode</a>, right down to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/burnout-paradise-getting-motorcycles-night-driving-this-august/">motorcycles</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/toy-cars-dlc-rolling-into-burnout-paradise-this-thursday/">many</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/see-what-youll-be-ruining-in-burnouts-new-dlc/">many</a> car packs. Now, the company has prepared <a href="http://portal.burnoutweb.ea.com/page/news">a lengthy diatribe</a> documenting some of the updates that never got off the ground.<br />
<br />
For one, did you know that Criterion initially planned to have motorcycles vs cars? Yep, sure was planned -- and did you know that Criterion wanted to create a whole series of islands, not just the one? The devs even wanted to give players the ability to go to the moon, complete with lunar challenges for Freeburn addicts. Also: the planes thing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/burnout-paradise-planes-could-be-just-an-april-fools-joke/">wasn't</a> an April Fool's joke -- the dev actually wanted to add them (and other vehicles) into the game.<br />
<br />
Overall, it's a pretty great read, if only to show you just how committed the studio was to the game and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/joystiq-interview-downloading-criterions-thoughts-on-dlc/">raising the bar for DLC</a> in general.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/18/criterion-details-burnout-paradise-dlc-that-never-was/">Criterion details Burnout Paradise DLC that never was</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 22:30:00 EST. Codemasters wasn't too impressed with that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a>-enabled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/11/video-project-natal-invades-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon/"><em>Burnout</em></a> demo, apparently, and thinks gamers won't trash their controllers and steering wheels for racing games when Natal is unleashed on the public. Speaking to <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/codies_natal_won_t_ever_replace_joypads_for_racers.html">Videogamer</a>, Codemasters' Ralph Fulton -- who is currently hard at work on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dirt-2">DiRT 2</a> --</em> said, "The complexity of control for a racing game, certainly for a core racing game like ours, requires a controller." <br /><br />Fulton points to the need for feedback and precision, claiming that Project Natal just won't do either justice. That's not to say there isn't a place for Natal in racers, as Fulton thinks it could add some functionality on top of traditional controls, though he fails to provide us with any ideas of his own. Until we get our hands on the final product, we're just going to have to watch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVaNBrYLvFg">those chase scenes from <em>Ronin</em></a> over and over again with a pair of fuzzy dice strapped to our TV.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/codemasters-natal-wont-replace-traditional-controls-in-racers/">Codemasters: Natal won't replace traditional controls in racers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 20:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a> has been the talk of the virtual town since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/microsoft-reveals-project-natal-motion-camera-for-360/">its unveiling</a> back at E3. A <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/ubisoft-looks-to-the-wii-project-natal-for-casual-gaming-future/">few</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/parappa-creator-raps-about-natals-musical-possibilities/">developers</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/15/endwar-dev-excited-about-natals-rts-possibilities/">have</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/mizuguchi-suda-51-weigh-in-on-e3s-new-motion-controllers/">dished</a> on the possibilities, but theoretical physicist-employing Valve has kept silent. The reason behind that silence, <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/valve-on-project-natal-show-us-the-compelling-game-first-142872.phtml">Destructoid</a> reports, is because Valve is waiting to see something "compelling" before diving right it.<br /><br />Okay, we'll admit that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/project-natal-video-features-smack-talking-scruffy-teenagers/"><em>Block Breaker</em></a> and <em>Burnout Paradise</em> looked pretty fun on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/11/video-project-natal-invades-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon/">Late Night with Jimmy Fallon</a> and at E3, but Valve certainly has a point. Talking with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/milo">a virtual kid</a> is kinda cool, but we can see the novelty wearing off quickly. And how much <em>Block Breaker </em>can one honestly play before having a heart attack?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/valve-wants-to-see-a-compelling-game-from-natal-so-do-we/">Valve wants to see a 'compelling game' from Natal (so do we!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 04:00:00 EST. Don't want to pony up the $8 to download <em>Burnout Paradise</em>'s premium "Legendary" cars? Well, here's a cheaper alternative: buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/big-surf-island-will-wash-12-99-out-of-your-wallet/"><em>Big Surf Island</em></a> for $13, as it includes special <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/toy-cars-dlc-rolling-into-burnout-paradise-this-thursday/">toy versions</a> of all four <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/see-what-youll-be-ruining-in-burnouts-new-dlc/">DLC cars</a>. You can get a cute mini version of the hovering 88 Special (pictured above), Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk by completing various tasks around the new <em>Burnout</em> island:<br />
<ul>
    <li><strong>Toy Hunter Cavalry Bootlegger</strong> - Jump from all 15 Island Mega Jumps</li>
    <li><strong>Toy Jansen P12 88 Special</strong> - Hit all 45 Island Billboards</li>
    <li><strong>Toy Carson GT Nighthawk</strong> - Complete all 24 Island Road Rules (Timed &amp; Showtime)</li>
    <li><strong>Toy Hunter Manhattan Spirit</strong> - Hit all 75 Island Smashes </li>
</ul>
We'll admit that we were too cheap to pay for the Legendary DLC, but with a little bit of skill, we'll be able to drive our own <em>Ghostbusters</em>-inspired car in no time.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/">Burnout Paradise: Legendary Cars</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/#1273032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.legendary.003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Jansen 88 Special" title="Jansen 88 Special" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/#1273414"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.comparison.001b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Jansen 88 Special vs. DeLorean time machine" title="Jansen 88 Special vs. DeLorean time machine" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/#1273026"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.legendary.001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Manhattan Spirit" title="Manhattan Spirit" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/#1273371"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.comparison.002b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Manhattan Spirit vs. Ecto-1" title="Manhattan Spirit vs. Ecto-1" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars/#1273024"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.legendary.002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Carson Nighthawk" title="Carson Nighthawk" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/unlock-legendary-cars-for-free-in-burnout-paradise-big-surf/">Unlock Legendary cars (for free!) in Burnout Paradise: Big Surf Island</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 12:14:00 EST. During a William Blair Growth Stock Conference presentation, EA's COO (John Pleasants, FYI) noted the existence of two unannounced titles -- neither of them particularly surprising if you've been keeping up on your <em>spurious internet rumors</em>. The first, <em>Battlefield 3</em>, is said to be in good shape and, even better, in good hands over at developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dice">DICE</a>. Unfortunately, it appears fans of frenzied first-person shootery will have to wait until the next fiscal year before returning to the field.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696413/Electronic-Arts-Confirms-Battlefield-3-In-Development.html">G4TV</a>'s Patrick Klepek, the second title is yet <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696411/Criterion-Developing-Need-For-Speed-Game.html">another <em>Need for Speed</em> game</a>, this one developed by the team behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><em>Burnout</em></a>. Pleasants allegedly praised the team for being "online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion." There's little else to go on at the moment, but we're certainly intrigued by the collision of those two racing franchises. How much will you pay for 15 new events in <em>Burnout Paradise</em>? Criterion is hoping the answer is $12.99 (&pound;9.99), because that's what it's charging for the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/big-surf-island/"><em>Big Surf Island</em> DLC pack</a>, available this Thursday. Interestingly, those who use Microsoft Magic Money[TM] get a slightly cheaper option at 1000<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" />.<br /><br />It's certainly not as costly as some on the Joystiq team feared, but it's also far from an immediate impulse buy. While we understand Criterion wants to "make money" and "feed the family," we lament the long-gone days of free <em>Burnout </em>DLC.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/big-surf-island-will-wash-12-99-out-of-your-wallet/">Big Surf Island will wash $12.99 out of your wallet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:15:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cops-and-robbers"><em>Cops and Robbers</em></a> out of the way, Criterion is free to finish up the last of the announced <em>Burnout Paradise</em> premium DLC -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/burnout-paradises-big-surf-island-now-premium-dlc/"><em>Big Surf Island</em></a>. This is the first new locale to be introduced into the ever-evolving racing game, and it'll add 15 events and 10 online freeburn challenges to the game. Criterion is promising big air for the expansion, and completionists will want to look for all 45 Billboards hidden on the island. For comparison purposes, the original game featured 120 events and 350 freeburn challenges.<br /><br />These early details come courtesy of an early look at the DLC's Trophies. (Check out the new Trophies after the break.) One particularly intriguing achievement involves getting a whopping 4.5 seconds of air time in a single jump. Who needs <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/criterion-working-on-burnout-paradise-planes/"><em>Burnout Planes</em></a> when you have massive jumps like that?<br /><br />Our very own Randy Nelson got some hands-on time with the DLC pack, but he can't report on the details quite yet. Expect a full preview on May 28.<br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/big-surf-island-adds-15-events-10-freeburn-challenges-to-burnou/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Surf Island adds 15 events, 10 freeburn challenges to Burnout Paradise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/big-surf-island-adds-15-events-10-freeburn-challenges-to-burnou/">Big Surf Island adds 15 events, 10 freeburn challenges to Burnout Paradise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 May 2009 15:45:00 EST. Gamers are in the middle of a love/hate relationship with Criterion. Costly and often-underwhelming "premium" DLC has tarnished the goodwill earned by <em>Burnout Paradise</em>'s free Cagney and Bikes updates. The $10 <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/review-burnout-paradise-party-criterions-first-premium-dlc/"><em>Party</em> pack</a> was a misstep for the series, but does <em>Cops &amp; Robbers</em> steer the game back in the right direction? The answer, thankfully, is a resounding "yes."<br /><br />At its core, <em>Cops &amp; Robbers</em> is a simple retooling of the game's already-existing online Marked Man mode. However, some key tweaks make it a much more focused and entertaining experience. While the $10 price point will give some sticker shock, the addition of more than 30 repainted vehicles makes it an easier buy than Criterion's "Toys" and "Legendary Cars" packs.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/">Burnout Paradise: Cops and Robbers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/#1344484"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/paradisecopsrobbers2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/#1344483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/burnoutparadise21024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/#1344482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/burnoutparadise11024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/joystiq-review-burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Review: Burnout Paradise Cops &amp; Robbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/joystiq-review-burnout-paradise-cops-and-robbers/">Joystiq Review: Burnout Paradise Cops &amp; Robbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 May 2009 13:45:00 EST. A lot of <em>Burnout Paradise</em>'s "premium DLC" packs have left gamers out in the cold. The "Party" DLC <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/review-burnout-paradise-party-criterions-first-premium-dlc/">didn't add much</a> to the <em>Burnout</em> experience. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/see-what-youll-be-ruining-in-burnouts-new-dlc/">movie-inspired</a> DLC cars were fun, but a bit <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/burnout-paradise-legendary-cars-priced/">pricey</a>. However, Criterion may have crafted a truly worthwhile add-on with its upcoming "<a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/cops-and-robbers-dlc-adds-8-new-trophies/">Cops and Robbers</a>" pack, available <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/cops-and-robbers-coming-to-burnout-paradise-april-30/">next week</a>.<br /><br />The latest episode of CrashTV (after the break) shows the <em>Burnout</em> team enjoying three rounds of their upcoming multiplayer expansion. Essentially, "Cops and Robbers" is the <em>Paradise</em> version of Capture the Flag, with cars trying to capture a floating collection of gold. The gold will spawn at random points on the map, and teams will have to reclaim the treasure and drive back to their designated checkpoint. Expect tons of Takedowns.<br /><br />The team at Criterion looks to be having a lot of fun with this new expansion -- maybe <em>too much fun</em>. As generally grumpy people, we always keep a suspicious eye on people that appear to be <em>happy</em>. We're watching you, Criterion ...<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/criterion-has-too-much-fun-playing-burnout-paradise-cops-and-ro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Criterion has too much fun playing Burnout Paradise: Cops and Robbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/criterion-has-too-much-fun-playing-burnout-paradise-cops-and-ro/">Criterion has too much fun playing Burnout Paradise: Cops and Robbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 12:55:00 EST. The folks at Criterion Games don't just sit around crashing virtual cars all day, you know. Well, okay, maybe they do <em>a little</em>, but they also produce a video show called Crash TV, which provides a behind-the-scenes look at everything the company is doing with its game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise">Burnout Paradise</a></em>. In the latest episode, Criterion previews some of the cop cars coming in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/15/burnout-paradise-teases-cops-and-robbers/">Cops and Robbers</a> DLC pack. We're not exactly sure what they stole, but judging by the teaser trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Burnout Paradise</span>'s</a> looming <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/cops-and-robbers/">Cops and Robbers</a> mode, criminals will have their jobs cut out for them outrunning the Paradise City fuzz. <br /><br />As a latest move to "change the way people <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/joystiq-interview-downloading-criterions-thoughts-on-dlc/">think about and experience</a>" the chaotic racer, much of Cops and Robbers' details remain behind bars, including the premium DLC's as-yet-unannounced release date. Still, if nothing else, this early look shows that Paradise City's police force is more than equipped to keep pace with lead foots on the wrong side of the law.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/15/burnout-paradise-teases-cops-and-robbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burnout Paradise teases 'Cops and Robbers' </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/15/burnout-paradise-teases-cops-and-robbers/">Burnout Paradise teases 'Cops and Robbers' </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 11:00:00 EST. Looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/criterion-bringing-cops-and-robbers-to-burnout-paradise/">Cops and Robbers</a>, the next bit of premium DLC being prepped for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/22/trophies-burnout-paradise/"><em>Burnout Paradise</em></a>, is finishing up. A set of eight new Trophies were just added to the game, bumping up the number of Trophies to a whopping 88. From what we can gather from the list, Cops and Robbers looks to be a <span style="font-style: italic;">Burnout</span> interpretation of Capture the Flag, with both Cops and Robbers racing each other to pick up Gold and deliver it to their base. Undoubtedly, takedowns will be a vital part of this online multiplayer mode.<br /><br />Criterion hasn't officially announced a release date or price for this upcoming mode, but this Trophy leak has us thinking it'll be sooner than later.<br /><br />[Thanks, Mason!]<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/cops-and-robbers-dlc-adds-8-new-trophies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cops and Robbers DLC adds 8 new Trophies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/cops-and-robbers-dlc-adds-8-new-trophies/">Cops and Robbers DLC adds 8 new Trophies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. Back in July of last year, Criterion Games mentioned that it had been <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/criterion-working-on-burnout-paradise-planes/">experimenting with airplanes</a> as a potential<em> </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><em>Burnout Paradise</em></a> add-on; however, with new info claiming that an announcement regarding this is <a href="http://www.criteriongames.com/faq/#">due on April 1st</a>, there's suspicion that such an update could be nothing more than a <em>really</em> long-running April Fool's joke. This information comes from the FAQ section on Criterion's website, where it was specifically stated to "check for an exciting announcement on April 1" for more on the inclusion of planes. <br /><br />Now, there are a number of ways we can read this quoted sentence. We can take it for face value and what it says directly, or we can assume that there's sarcasm and allusion in the type. Preferably, we'd like to think Criterion is serious about making plane crashes in Paradise City a reality, but the proposition of planes in <em>Burnout</em> is hard to believe. Associate that with April Fool's and, well, it's <em>really</em> hard to believe. It seems the real joke is on us trying to figure out which is which. We've contacted Criterion and EA to see if we can get a straight answer.<br /><br />[Thanks, Joey B.!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/burnout-paradise-planes-could-be-just-an-april-fools-joke/">Burnout Paradise planes could be an April Fool's joke</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 03:00:00 EST. It seems the Don has been spending some time in Paradise City, returning from his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/ea-whacks-the-godfather-ii-release-plans-delays-game/">extended vacation</a> with a pair of the city's more recognizable rides. Eagle eyes at Polish site <a href="http://www.playpc.pl/newsroom/artykul.asp?Artykul=546">Play PC</a> recently discovered similarities between two cars in both <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2">Godfather II</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise">Burnout Paradise</a></em>, namely the latter's Hunter Cavalry and Carson Opus.<br /><br />Whether or not the cars in the upcoming EA sequel are the exact same models as those in <em>Burnout</em>, or just strikingly similar, isn't exactly clear. In any case, the Don's chop shop looks like it sanded off most of the details from <em>Burnout</em>'s rides. When you're the Don, image is everything; we just hope the new paint jobs are as bulletproof as they are green.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-289312.aspx?CT=1">N4G</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/08/burnout-cars-spotted-on-godfather-iis-streets/">Burnout cars spotted on Godfather II's streets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Mar 2009 22:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/pure-devs-new-racer-split-second-to-debut-march-6/">As promised</a>, last night's episode of GameTrailers TV brought our first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/pure-developer-blackrock-teases-new-action-racer/">non-fuzzy look</a> at <em>Pure</em> developer Black Rock Studio's upcoming racing title, <em>Split/Second</em>. Keighley's ominous warning seems accurate -- it appears to be trying to give <em>Burnout</em> a run for its money. However, rather than participating in high-speed (probably illegal) street racing for your own amusement, it looks like <em>Split/Second</em> will be placing your automotive exploits in front of an enraptured televised audience.<br /><br /><em>Split/Second</em> will also add a neat gameplay element hinted at in the trailer -- it looks like players will be able to "trigger" destructive events on the track in order to impede their opponents (or themselves, if they're not on top of their respective games). Watch the trailer if you want an example. The developers promise further info about the game next Wednesday -- til' then, you can <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/gametrailerstv_player.php?ep=50&amp;starttime=160">check out the trailer here</a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/split-second-debut-trailer-is-highly-destructive/">Split/Second debut trailer is highly destructive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 12:30:00 EST. Or, wait -- did it actually reveal the game in said teaser? It's like, out there now, right? We're pretty sure that counts as a revelation.<br /><br />From the four seconds of <em>Split Second</em> cinematics shown in the teaser (which appears to have come from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/pure-developer-blackrock-teases-new-action-racer/">Black Rock's teaser video</a>, seen above), as well as Geoff Keighley's ominous voiceover which warns, "watch out, Burnout," we're guessing it'll be in the same ludological vein as Criterion's cash cow. We've contacted a Disney Interactive rep for more info, but we're sure to find out more when <em>GTTV</em> airs Friday night (Saturday morning) at 1 a.m. EST.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/pure-devs-new-racer-split-second-to-debut-march-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pure dev's new racer 'Split Second' to debut March 6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/pure-devs-new-racer-split-second-to-debut-march-6/">Pure dev's new racer 'Split Second' to debut March 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 17:20:00 EST. Following a somewhat embarassing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_bfVE-8dcc">premature release</a> of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Burnout%20Paradise">Burnout Paradise</a></em>'s "Toy Cars" DLC a couple of weeks back on Xbox Live, Criterion has finally set <a href="http://www.criteriongames.com/article.php?artID=414">a legitimate release date for the nine-car pack</a>. Keep an eye on your respective system's digital shopping center this coming Thursday morning -- that's when Criterion anticipates the miniature vehicles will be released upon the inhabitants of Paradise City.<br /><br />Surprisingly, with two days between us and shrunken vehicular carnage, Criterion hasn't announced the price of the DLC bundle -- though if it matches the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/burnout-paradise-toy-cars-and-boost-dlc-details-leaked/">costs displayed during February's accidental launch</a>, we can expect to drop 1,000<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($12.50) for the whole kit 'n kaboodle, or 160<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($2) per car, with the exception of the Toy Nakamura Firehawk motorcycle, which went for 240<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($3) during the early release.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/toy-cars-dlc-rolling-into-burnout-paradise-this-thursday/">Toy Cars DLC rolling into Burnout Paradise this Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 11:30:00 EST. Over the course of the 2008, Criterion did its best to win over our hearts, though as fond as we are of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><span style="font-style: italic;">Burnout Paradise</span></a> it was the UK developer's knack for releasing quality DLC that kept us coming back. In a market where most games are shelved weeks -- if not days -- after first spinning up, Criterion managed to keep its open-world racer relevant all year long with a steady stream of downloads, adding night driving, motorcycles and a host of new online challenges.<br /> <br /> This tradition looks to continue well into 2009, with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/burnout-dlc-adds-ecto-1-kitt-and-the-general-lee-parodies/">famous cars</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/criterion-driving-toy-cars-into-burnout-paradise/">inflated toys</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/criterion-teases-next-burnout-paradise-dlc-pack/">hot rods</a> and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/criterion-bringing-cops-and-robbers-to-burnout-paradise/">the fuzz</a> all slotted to pull out onto Paradise City streets in the coming months. Now, with a newly released <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/review-burnout-paradise-party-criterions-first-premium-dlc/">Party Pack</a> under the hood, and PC gamers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/burnout-ultimate-box-dated-exclusive-to-pc-in-north-america/">racing against the flow of traffic</a> with a keyboard and mouse, we spoke with <span style="font-style: italic;">Burnout Paradise</span> senior producer Pete Lake to get his thoughts on why we just can't seem to let go of the steering wheel.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/joystiq-interview-downloading-criterions-thoughts-on-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq interview: Downloading Criterion's thoughts on DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/joystiq-interview-downloading-criterions-thoughts-on-dlc/">Joystiq interview: Downloading Criterion's thoughts on DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 21:45:00 EST. Many gamers are incredibly grateful for Criterion's exceptional handling of DLC for <em>Burnout Paradise</em>. Over the course of the last year, Criterion has added a day/night system to its game, new online multiplayer modes, and motorcycles -- all for the price of nothing. However, it looks like the free ride is over, and today's update marks the first "premium" downloadable content for the game. The Party pack adds a new offline multiplayer experience to the game, but is it worth it?<br /><br />Unfortunately, we'd say no. At $9.99 (800<img hspace="2" border="0" vspace="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/xbox.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/msptpng.png" alt="" />), the Party pack is not a very cheap add-on (it's half the price of the full game!). At such a steep price, we'd expect a bit more than a simple retooling of menus. There's no added content in the Party pack: you will not see any new parts of Paradise City, nor will you unlock any new vehicles. The challenges featured in the Party pack are, quite frankly, not very different from what's already available in Online Freeburn.<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/review-burnout-paradise-party-criterions-first-premium-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: Burnout Paradise Party, Criterion's first 'premium' DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/review-burnout-paradise-party-criterions-first-premium-dlc/">Review: Burnout Paradise Party, Criterion's first 'premium' DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 15:00:00 EST. It seems the lazy and inattentive police officers of Paradise City have begun to frown upon the frantic racing and wreckage filling their city, with <a href="http://www.dpadmagazine.com/2009/01/28/police-coming-to-burnout-paradise/">rumor</a> indicating the return of police cars or possibly pursuits to Criterion's racer. Some scenes depicting the blues in red-hot chase have already spilled onto the internet, as you can see in our gallery below.<br /><br />You can see the potential pursuit mode that showed up in the new Burnout Store <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/1322912/full/">right here</a>, as well as images for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/1322910/full/">new</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/1322909/full/">cop car</a> in the game. Will these become available as DLC in the future? We've asked for comment and we'll get back to you as soon as we get word.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/">Burnout Paradise - Police Car Snaps</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/#1322912"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.paradise.ultimate.box.trailer.4-1282009-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/#1322911"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.paradise.ultimate.box.trailer.3-1282009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/#1322910"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.paradise.ultimate.box.trailer.2-1282009-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/burnout-paradise-police-car-snaps/#1322909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/burnout.paradise.ultimate.box.trailer-1282009-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Thanks, Eric]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/rumor-police-cars-pursuits-returning-to-burnout-paradise-via-d/">Rumor: Police cars, pursuits returning to Burnout Paradise via DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 11:30:00 EST. <p>Criterion Games has earned a lot of street cred for the amount of content they've added to <em>Burnout Paradise</em>. The upcoming Party pack is the first premium (read: not free) DLC coming to the game, and many gamers are eager to show Criterion their support. However, while we know the Party pack adds new pass-the-controller modes, we're not exactly sure how it will play, or what it will look like. This newly released trailer for the Europe-exclusive <em>Ultimate Box</em> shows a few seconds of the DLC pack -- but it's still not enough to get a good feel for how the expansion will play.</p>
<p>It's not too long until the DLC will be released. We're hopeful that Criterion will make something that justifies the asking pice.<br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/burnout-paradise-ultimate-box-trailer-shows-party-footage/">Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box trailer shows Party footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 14:25:00 EST. At least two studios appear to have sidestepped the torrent of layoffs that have loomed over the game industry in recent months. <a href="http://www.developmag.com/news/31165/EAs-UK-studios-dodge-the-axe">Develop</a> reports that UK-based <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout/">Burnout</a> </em>dev Criterion and Bright Light, Electronic Arts' casual game studio in Guildford, have been given immunity from EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/ea-confirms-layoffs-disappointed-with-holiday-sales/">recent round of layoffs</a>. That sound you hear is a collective sigh of relief.<br /><br />Staff cuts at EA have been particularly deep, with numerous employees at its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/rumor-mythic-layoffs-affect-qa-customer-support/">Mythic</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/mass-layoffs-hit-skate-need-for-speed-dev-black-box/">Black Box</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/ea-confirms-layoffs-at-madden-dev-tiburon/">Tiburon </a>branches given their walking papers in just the last week. With news of Bright Light's amnesty, it seems certain that EA is looking to casually dig itself out of its financial hole. Then again, maybe once Criterion gets its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/see-burnouts-jansen-88-special-fly-into-action/">time circuits</a> working we can all go back to a time when money was easier to come by.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/report-eas-criterion-bright-light-studios-safe-from-layoffs/">Report: EA's Criterion, Bright Light studios safe from layoffs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 08:30:00 EST. <em>Burnout Paradise's</em> first-ever premium content pack is coming February 6, and even if you aren't willing to dole out the dead presidents, Criterion's giving you another reason to mark that date. Coming alongside the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/burnout-ultimate-box-dated-exclusive-to-pc-in-north-america/">Party Pack DLC</a> is a rather hefty title update ... and it's free!<br /><br />Highlights include an in-game store, in-game access to the Criterion Games Network website (details to come; PC and PS3-only), enhanced visuals, a restart event option (yay!), easier barrel rolls and some vehicle and game mode tweaking. Hit up the <a href="http://www.criteriongames.com/article.php?artID=384">developer's site</a> for full details, and check out <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2009/01/23/whats-in-the-upcoming-free-burnout-paradise-patch/">PS3 Fanboy</a> for a full list of the new Trophies.

You thought Criterion was done adding content to <em>Burnout Paradise</em>? Wrong! On February 6th, PS3 owners of <em>Burnout Paradise</em> will be able to download a free patch that adds a whole lot of content.<br />
<ul>
    <li>In-Game Store (PS3/PC only) - An in-game browser will connect to the "Criterion Games Network." From here, you'll be able to see all the game's updates and purchase any of the upcoming premium DLC.</li>
    <li>Tweaked vehicle handling - The earlier cars are now tweaked to be easier for newcomers to use. "These cars are now slower, harder to crash and less likely to spin out at low speeds."</li>
    <li>Junkyard sorting - You'll be able to compare the stats of cars, and you'll be able to filter out cars, bikes, and upcoming DLC vehicles.</li>
    <li>Stunt Run timer changed - Stunt Run will now have a different timer that starts much slower than before. This allows beginners more wiggle room to start a combo. Experts will still be challenged: the larger your combo, the faster the timer runs out.</li>
    <li>Events rebalanced - All events have been modified to accommodate the new car speeds.</li>
    <li>Road Rage tweaked - Players no longer get additional time once they reach the target score. This is great, because we usually intentionally crash in order to end this mode.</li>
    <li>Enhanced visuals - In-game items, like billboards and smashes, are now easier to spot. The lighting has been tweaked to be "more vibrant." Driving at night will be easier.</li>
    <li><strong>Restart - Yes, you can restart races now.</strong></li>
    <li>Easier barrel rolls - Barrel rolls are now automatic. However, to do more than one at a time, you'll have to use the analog sticks.</li>
</ul>
The upcoming premium DLC packs (Party, Toy Cars, Legendary Cars) add additional Trophies into the game. We've included them after the cut.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/whats-in-the-upcoming-free-burnout-paradise-patch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What's in the upcoming free Burnout Paradise patch?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/whats-in-the-upcoming-free-burnout-paradise-patch/">What's in the upcoming free Burnout Paradise patch?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. Players who missed the offramp to Paradise City can take the next exit early next month. Electronic Arts announced that the "Ultimate Box" edition of <em>Burnout Paradise</em> will ship in North America on February 5 as a PC exclusive, while players in Europe will be able to pick up the compilation on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 6. As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/burnout-paradise-party-ultimate-box-coming-feb-2009/">previously revealed</a>, the box will bundle together all of the game's previously released DLC, from patches to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/joystiq-hands-on-burnout-paradise-bikes/">two-wheeled mayhem</a>, in one easy-to-crash package. <br /><br />Also included will be a pass-the-pad multiplayer mode, promising dozens of "quick-fire, turn-based challenges" for up to eight players. This mode will also be released to console drivers as a premium (read: not free) "Party" pack, adding new Achievements and <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/09/22/trophies-burnout-paradise/">Trophies</a> to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions when the DLC rolls out in both North America and Europe on February 5.<br /><br />Both <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001988XHY?tag=prey0f&amp;camp=0&amp;creative=0&amp;linkCode=as4&amp;creativeASIN=B001988XHY&amp;adid=0RK6YSQH3D8XN348SK67&amp;">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=71407">GameStop</a> list the PC bundle for $40, though no official pricing for the DLC nor "Ultimate Box" edition have yet been announced.<br />

We have a lot of fans of <em>Burnout Paradise</em> here at PS3 Fanboy. In fact, it won PS3 Fanboy's award for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-best-of-2008/1245347/">Best Racing Game</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-best-of-2008/1245357/">Best DLC</a>. Those that have experienced everything <em>Burnout Paradise</em> has to offer can look to more fun in the upcoming multiplayer-focused <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/the-free-ride-ends-burnout-paradise-pay-dlc-coming/">Party Pack</a>. This premium DLC will be available on the PlayStation Store on February 5th. Not only does it add new modes to your game, it will also give you access to a new batch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/22/trophies-burnout-paradise/">Trophies</a>.<br /><br />If you don't have <em>Burnout Paradise</em> yet, there's never been a better time to pick it up. In the US, the game has officially dropped in price <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=aOUs5qjvzDc&amp;offerid=121938.645900733&amp;type=10&amp;subid=">to $20</a>. Europeans will be able to purchase <em>Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box</em>, which includes the game and every add-on released so far. Expect that in retail stores on February 6th.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> In addition to the premium DLC, <em>Burnout Paradise</em> fans can also expect a FREE patch which, according to the <a href="http://www.criteriongames.com/article.php?artID=383">Criterion blog</a>, "includes the introduction of our all-new in-game website and awesome in-game store. We've also worked on changes to game modes, visuals, the entire vehicle dynamics system. The Back to the Future-inspired hovering 88 Special was just one of four cars to be introduced in the upcoming Legendary Cars DLC pack. Today, Criterion has revealed all four, one of them taking a cue from Ghostbusters. The Manhattan Spirit is based on the film's Ecto-1 -- in the game, it's a stunt car that has some kind of special ability when players hit L3. Hrm.<br /><br />The Carson Nighthawk, based on Night Rider's KITT, has a special lighting array triggered by boosting, which should look fantastic at night. Finally, the Cavalry Bootlegger is a tribute to "The Chicanator," with a massive horn that can be triggered with L3. The fanservice can be seen in all its glory in our gallery.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Video after the break.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/all-four-burnout-paradise-legendary-cars-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>All four Burnout Paradise Legendary Cars revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/all-four-burnout-paradise-legendary-cars-revealed/">All four Burnout Paradise Legendary Cars revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 12:58:00 EST. What it lacks in a Flux Capacitor and time circuits,<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise">Burnout Paradise</a></em><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1229953556440*/">'s</a> hover-enabled "Jansen 88 Special" more than makes up for in its ability to make us drool, as evidenced in new footage released by Criterion Games. View it after the break!<br /><br />The car, which certainly meets with Doc Brown's seal of approval, is one quarter of the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/burnout-paradise-goes-back-to-the-future/">Legendary Cars Pack</a>, which will also include the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk. Now, if only our Flux Capacitor would start fluxing so we could leap ahead a few months and try this DLC out for ourselves.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/see-burnouts-jansen-88-special-fly-into-action/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>See Burnout's Jansen 88 Special fly into action</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/see-burnouts-jansen-88-special-fly-into-action/">See Burnout's Jansen 88 Special fly into action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 08:58:00 EST. <p style="margin-bottom: 0.17in;">Although there are 64 Trophies available for Burnout Paradise; 48 Bronze, 11 Silver, 4 Gold and a Platinum. It is currently one of the easier games to achieve Platinum on. Unfortunately you will need a PSEye in order to clear the game. But as a rule, there are few thumb-breakers in this game. So strap in and get at it. There are trophies to be won. </p>

Criterion has <a href="http://www.criteriongames.com/article.php?artID=374">announced</a> that its upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/burnout-paradise"><em>Burnout Paradise</em></a> downloadable content Big Surf Island, contrary to previous statements in the developer's podcast, will no longer be offered gratis. Said the developer, "Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience - the highlight of a year of incredible premium content."<br /><br />Surf Island will focus heavily on stunts -- in Criterion's words, the mantra is, "If you can see it, you can drive it." What we don't know at the moment is how much it will cost, or when it will be made available. The car shown in the images, the Dust Storm, will also be available the same time as Surf Island, although there is no indication if it will be free or premium DLC. If you haven't jumped on the <em>Burnout Paradise </em>bandwagon (and subsequently rammed it into a busy intersection, sending the bandwagon flying into a nearby construction site), the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/burnout-paradise-party-ultimate-box-coming-feb-2009/">Ultimate Box edition</a> is coming in February 2009.<br />
