Today in Joystiq: July 9, 2008

Joystiq reader Kevin V sent this in (big thanks!), and we really wish we had shown this to you guys earlier: "This delicious masterpiece was HUGE and pieced together delicately by a 2D array of cupcakes; some might even call them cupcake pixels. Yes it was a tasty and it looked. In addition, my fiance's uncle surprised me with a green "Game Over" t-shirt. My affinity for digital simulations is apparently well known in her family. It helps, too, that your future father-in-law is more concerned about playing the Wii together than whether or not your longstanding attempt in the CompSci graduate program, in conjunction with your broken tetris ports, will ever be enough to support a family!"

We still laugh at the thought of choosing "quit" in the option menu. For those not interested in gaming cakes, have a lolWaits instead. Check out the highlights for today:

Viva Piñata proposer tying the knot today with game-themed cake

We all had our hearts warmed last year when we heard of David Rosowski's delightful approach to nuptial queries -- the young man proposed to his girlfriend Jenn by sending her a diamond and question-popping note in Viva Piñata, immediately following up with a bended knee and a real-life rock. Nearly seven months later, their wedding day has come, and after trading vows upon a cruise ship, the two will chow down on a matrimonial pastry topped with a Horstachio and a veiled Pretztail (two of the game's more recognizable papier-mâché critters).

You can watch their big day unfold on David's YouTube channel, if you have nothing better to do this Saturday morning. We here at Joystiq HQ won't be in virtual attendance, but we'd still like to wish David and Jenn a long and happy marriage, full of fulfilled romance requirements and bushels of joy candy.

Dead Space breaks to celebrate with cakes

While still gunning for a Halloween 2008 release, the developers of Dead Space managed to take some time off and bond through various culinary activities. In addition to a hot wings eating contest, executive producer Glen Schofield told MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo about a cake-baking contest the dev team held. Pictured above is the winner, Ishi-s'more-a, based on the Ishimura (pictured right). MTV will have (less) important details about the actual game later this week; check out the article for another tantalizing (and deathly) pastry.

Valve: More Portal coming 'for sure'

Though we'd be GlaDOS can be to have another slice of Portal's topsy-turvy displacement gameplay, we'd almost certainly be unsatisfied with a quick 'n dirty content boost to our 2007 game of the year. Thankfully, Valve's Doug Lombardi has told Eurogamer that the developer isn't looking to simply throw a handful of new puzzles at us. "There'll be more Portal, for sure," he said. "But the details of that, to be honest, we're still working out."

Also being worked out at Valve headquarters are the continuing adventures of crowbar-wielding physicist, Gordon Freeman, who's due to appear in Half-Life 2: Episode Three. "With Episode Three we want to live up to the promise of where we are taking things to; there's a lot of work being done to make sure we deliver on that promise." If you're dying to learn more about where said things are being taken to, you're going to have wait a bit, "probably months not weeks." And don't even get us started on how long you might have to wait for the actual game.

At least you'll have some upcoming Team Fortress 2 content to keep you busy which, as per Valve's desire for all its additional content, will be free.

Making of the Joystiq award: let there be cake

Interested in how we made our inaugural Joystiq trophy? It all started with a friendly online conversation between this writer and Editor Ludwig Kietzmann:

JoyLudwig: This year's winner is Portal. Make us a cake.
JoyRoss: Or what?
JoyLudwig: Or death.
JoyRoss: Cake or death. Cute.
JoyLudwig: ...

Following an embarrassingly long string of horrendous cake puns, we set about cooking an actual cake.

Joystiq's Top 10 of 2007: Portal

Out of all the superb titles released in 2007, Portal most effortlessly takes the cake. The true star of The Orange Box saw a talented team from DigiPen snatched up by Valve and ultimately transformed from students into teachers. Gamers and designers alike must play Portal, not only because it's so sublimely designed from start to gripping finish, but because there's so much to learn from it.

The game is phenomenal in every sense of the word, its deviously delirious guide and antagonist, GlaDOS, already running rampant online as a fully fledged and infinitely quotable meme. It certainly speaks volumes of its witty writing when the game's other widely recognized star is nothing more than a vaguely endearing block. The intelligence isn't merely confined to the game's dialogue either -- it permeates every aspect of Portal's "Aha!" puzzles and perfectly paced progression. There is no filler here.

When the seemingly unconnected room-based challenges give way to a daring escape attempt and a climactic showdown, the game's genius is not only revealed, but heard in the form of Jonathan Coulton's "Still Alive" ending song. Inescapably catchy and completely cognizant of its audience, it marks the perfect conclusion to this year's smartest and most focused game.

Please accept our cake, Portal, but for the good of all of us, don't eat it! We don't want you getting fat like all those other games.

The Joystiq Weekend: December 15 - 17, 2007

We had two people over the weekend send us pictures of real-life Portal occurrences - a blue portal and Glados, respectively. We want to remind people that the events of Portal were just dramatizations of real-life, and as such, no one should worry about anything out of the ordinary. Thank you and enjoy your cake. This is a good time to remind Joystiq readers that, although quite delicious, cake is very easily made or purchased and you should not be tempted to join experiments with the promise of aforementioned pastry. Joystiq reader Alex from Binghamton University found a flier from Aperture Science seeking volunteers for experiments. Thankfully for us, he took a bunch of pictures, some of which make the poster text quite legible. Let's see if we can go an entire post without saying "the usual phrase." Happy Birthday PS3: The cake is (not) a lie

You've gotta hand it to Sony. This is, as far as our memory serves, the first time we've gotten a birthday cake for somebody else's birthday. Even more unique, that somebody is in fact ... a something! After a slight delay in acquiring the cake last night (it wasn't a lie), we didn't think fair to eat it and not do anything nice in return for our PS3, so we did the nicest thing we could think of. We fed it a birthday present: the deliciously moist Uncharted.

All next week, our pen pals at PS3 Fanboy are celebrating the PStriple's birfday in style: they're giving away an 80GB PS3 and an Uncharted prize pack (with all sorts of cool Uncharted swag!), all wrapped up in commentary on the console's performance thus far.

Today's most edible DIY video: making a Wii cake

"Everything inside is eatable, I mean edible, I mean you can eat everything." - Gene Wilder, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

Designer cake maker Brian Walak put his talents to good use (not to marginalize his other, impressive work, but we can't exactly cover non-gaming culinary art) and made a cake modeled after a Wii, complete with remote (but no sensor bar in sight).

Wired's Chris Kohler has posted some advice from Walak for budding chefs who want to make their own Wii cake. Walak's creation got him on the Martha Stewart show to discuss the game console and his pastry. Video embedded after the break.

Blizzard designer's gamer wedding

How to incorporate gaming into your wedding and still keep it tasteful? It's a question many young men and women are dealing with nowadays. So, until we get The Tasteful Gamer's Wedding by Martha Stewart, we're just going to have to keep figuring it out on our own. This is how Cory Stockton, lead level designer at Blizzard, worked gaming into his wedding:
  • Super Mario Bros. wedding cake. (So. Cal. designer Erica O'Brien)
  • Legend of Zelda ice sculpture/vodka luge (So. Cal. Union Ice). The sculpture doubled as a vodka luge for martinis and shots at the wedding. If you look close at the images in the gallery you can see the channel flowing diagonal down the center of the sword/shield for the alcohol.
  • Tables were all named after video game consoles. The head table was called "Press Start to Begin." There were 23 tables from the NES and NeoGeo, to the Xbox 360.
  • The grand entrance music was The Legend of Zelda's overworld theme and the wedding party's music was the Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 theme.
His wife Christi was "100% ok" with those elements, but Stockton says it's mostly because it was his only real involvement with the wedding. He says the guests were happy with the elements as well and they received tons of compliments on the cake and sculpture. For the tables named after consoles Stockton says, "I actually tried to sit people at table names that matched up too. For instance we had the grandparents at the NES table and all the kids at the Wii table. I will say, the Virtual Boy table was not all that popular." More images can be found in the gallery below. Congrats to the couple.

The most impressive Mario cake ... EVER

Su-Yin from The Journal of a Girl who Loves To Cook has crafted the most breathtaking Mario cake we've ever seen. The inspiration came when a friend spotted the Super Mario wedding cake and said "Su Yin could do better than that!". So ... she did. As with any serious art project, the design began with a sketch and took several days to complete. The results, as you can see, are beyond stunning. Check out the gallery below and marvel at Su-Yin's ability to blend food, art, and geekery into one delicious dessert.
