Once again, to our delight, Virtual Console games grace two separate Nintendo platforms today, and both are "fire" themed to a degree. On the 3DS eShop, Capcom's excellent RPG-ish Ghosts 'n Goblins spinoff, Gargoyle's Quest, is now available. The somewhat more obscure SNES firefighting game, The Ignition Factor, is on Wii.

DSiWare sees a very cute Bubble Bobble-esque game, and ... Calculator. Which is a calculator.
Continue reading NintendoWare Weekly: Gargoyle's Quest, The Ignition Factor

NintendoWare Weekly: Gargoyle's Quest, The Ignition Factor originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 14:40:00 EST. So, you've got $2 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to calculate money you only wish you had? Well DSi users, you're in luck with a nifty calculator. But, the convenience doesn't end there. The application utilizes sound effects and visuals from Super Mario Bros. If you think about it, it's a really smart idea! For years we've been joking that the DS prints money, but now the DSi can count it, too. Oh, technology ... where would we be without you? Check out a video of the application in action after the break.
Continue reading You've got Mario in my DSi calculator app

You've got Mario in my DSi calculator app originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 21:30:00 EST. ... and by worst we mean "with as little taste as humanly possible" -- but first the best LittleBigPlanet level. A PSN user named Upsilandre, whose brain is at least thrice the size of ours, has created an "electronic" (i.e. not mechanical) 8-bit calculator capable of adding and subtracting any double-digit number. In the video after the break, you see both how to interact with the level and how the whole thing works (spoiler: It's nearly maxes out the complexity meter). It's a shame to think this might disappear once the beta is over.

As for the other video -- and please don't let this take away from your awe at the above calculator -- file this under the "unfortunate but bound to happen" category. A couple levels have popped up on the beta based on the September 11 attacks. Remember, folks, you can report offensive levels in-game for Media Molecule to promptly slam. GoodEvilPlanet officially launches October 21.

[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]
Continue reading GoodEvilPlanet: The best and worst levels we've seen so far

GoodEvilPlanet: The best and worst levels we've seen so far originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 11:30:00 EST. Now, you can get a good helping of geek by booting up your DS!

The significant bit of news here seems to be that someone has made it possible to run a computer algebra system on the DS, allowing the user to perform calculus on polynomials and solve and simplify equations. We won't lie, our absolute worst subject back in school was math, but luckily our post-school report card has high marks in searching on Wikipedia. The application that makes this all possible is called Mathomatic.

Mathomatic itself has been available for quite some time now, however we've just gotten hip to the whole thing. So, we apologize if this is an old and dusty hat you're being forced to wear right now. Since the release of Brain Age in Japan, Nintendo has turned their attention toward casual, nontraditional fare for adult audiences. Much of it, like Brain Age, is casual game material with a slight educational slant, but other successful DS releases, like Cooking Navi and Eigo Zuke, are not games at all, but rather educational aids and tools designed to use the DS's unique interface. They're all doing massive business, which makes it difficult to laugh at them no matter how silly they are.

But Nintendo was not the first company to attempt to sell application software on a gaming system, however. That distinction probably falls on BASIC Programming for the Atari 2600. Nintendo wasn't even the first company to sell application software on a Nintendo handheld. In fact, Game Boy non-games appeared in 1991. They didn't change the face of gaming. But they make for an interesting historical footnote now, and isn't that better than selling millions of copies? It is for us!

Continue reading Non-Game Boy: Serious games before they were cool

Non-Game Boy: Serious games before they were cool originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 10:00:00 EST. But we here at the Fanboy believe that those facets are crucial to the overall Zelda experience, just as important as those silly temples. But how about you? How many golden bugs did you collect; how many heart pieces have you yet to find?

The convenient "Complete Calculator" for Twilight Princess will track your vital stats, brave warriors, and return to you a percentage of how much of the game you've completed. Did any of you guys pick up a true 100%? Has your social life been destroyed as a consequence?

[via Digg]

[Update 1: Old link appeared to contain an IE 8.0 page-spoof. They were simple games that just needed to be placed in the PSP's PHOTO folder in order to work. One of the great things about TIFF homebrew was that almost anyone could use it, without any complicated ELOADERs and what-not. Another plus? It worked on homebrew with firmware as high as 2.80.

Milad, from the Playstation forums, has created a huge list of TIFF programs that may catch your fancy. Here's a small sampling of what's available:

Magic 8-Ball

Calculator

TNT Dude (homebrew game)

Unstuck (stuck pixel remover)

FileAssistant (awesome PSP file management utility)

It varies wildly from person to person, dependent on launch titles, extra controllers, and virtual console points. That's why some clever folks at N-sider.com have put together a lovely calculator for you, to determine how much you'll be spending come November. It gives accurate descriptions of all confirmed launch titles, and takes into account just about everything you could possibly desire ... except, unfortunately, an SD card. Still, with the limited number of Virtual Console titles at launch, the chances that you'll be needing a additional storage immediately are pretty slim. Check below for the entire Wii Fanboy staff's expected costs!

Jason Wishnov - $476.94
Extra controller w/nunchuk, classic controller
Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
2000 Virtual Console points

David Hinkle - $667.70
Extra controller w/nunchuk
Elebits, Excite Truck, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Trauma Center: Second Opinion
2000 Virtual Console points

Alisha Karabinus - $635.90
Extra controller w/nunchuk, classic controller
Excite Truck, Red Steel, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Zelda: Twilight Princess
2000 Virtual Console points

Nikki Inderlied - $558.99
Extra controller w/nunchuk, classic controller
Zelda: Twilight Princess, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Red Steel, Rayman Raving Rabbids
500 Virtual Console points

What are you guys spending?
