The brash bad boy director of <em>Rush Hour</em> fame is adapting Zynga's game for television. Ratner will serve as executive producer on the half-hour animated series, aided by Canadian television production firm Six Eleven Media.<br /><br /><span>"<em>FarmVille</em> is one of the most exciting brands out there today and its cross-platform opportunities are endless," </span>Ratner said in a statement to the <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2013/02/07/brett-ratner-brings-farmville-game-to-television/">Wall Street Journal</a>.<span> "I am thrilled to be expanding the brand with existing fans and also engaging a whole new audience." </span><br /><br />Zynga is no stranger to cross-promotion, having already struck up a deal with Hasbro to produce <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/04/hasbros-zynga-board-games-now-available-paradoxical/">a line of board games</a> based on its properties last year, one of which was - you guessed it - <em>Farmville</em>. Zynga also just reported <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/zynga-posts-209-4-million-loss-for-2012/">a $209.4 million loss</a> for 2012, subsequently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/zynga-closing-three-games-including-cityville-2/">shutting down three of its games</a>, including <em>CityVille 2</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/brett-ratner-buddies-up-with-zynga-on-farmville-animated-series/">Brett Ratner buddies up with Zynga on Farmville animated series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 19:15:00 EST. He says so right on his new Tumblr called "<a href="http://ilovegamesyouguys.tumblr.com/">I Love Games You Guys</a>," which is where Ward plans to "interview people who work on games."<br /><br />Apparently it's also where he plans to post adorable video game gifs, starting with Mario. Ward is gearing up for his first interview with Charles Martinet, who has provided the voice of Mario since 1994. I Love Games You Guys is a community effort, with Ward asking readers if they can help him snag contacts or make connections with interviewees in the industry.<br /><br />Considering there's an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/adventure-time"><em>Adventure Time</em></a> game on its way, maybe Ward should interview himself. If you have a helpful connection or just want to watch Mario stick a plunger on his face for a few hours, check out Ward's Tumblr <a href="http://ilovegamesyouguys.tumblr.com/">right here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/26/adventure-time-creator-loves-games-you-guys-and-started-this-t/">Adventure Time creator loves games, you guys, and started this Tumblr</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Aug 2012 19:30:00 EST. Today, we're not sure if we should be laughing or weeping silently into our keyboards: Adult Swim has revealed a free, limited-edition <em>Robot Chicken</em> hat for any class in <em>TF2</em>, as the first iteration in a series of new stuff coming from Valve and Adult Swim.<br /><br />To get the <em>Robot Chicken </em>hat, just <a href="https://login.adultswim.com/services/aswim/flow/register">sign up</a> for the Adult Swim newsletter by July 4.<br /><br />In related, not-completely-predictable news, the <a href="http://www.adultswim.com/promos/valve/faq.html">FAQ</a> for redeeming the <em>Robot Chicken</em> hat asks and answers an intriguing question:<blockquote> Q. Are you making a Team Fortress cartoon?<br /> A. Go ask your mother.</blockquote>As long as it's not called "The Hatsure Brothers" or any variation thereof, an Adult Swim<em> Team Fortress 2 </em>cartoon sounds like something we could get behind.<br /><br />In still-related, by-now-old news, Valve launched the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/27/finally-you-can-officially-meet-team-fortress-2s-pyro/">"Meet the Pyro" video</a> and announced the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/27/make-in-game-movies-with-the-valve-source-filmmaker-beta-today/">Source Filmmaker</a> movie-creating tool today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/27/adult-swim-and-valve-teamed-up-to-give-us-yep-a-hat/">Adult Swim and Valve teamed up to give us... yep, a hat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:30:00 EST. The news comes from a media conference in Cannes, France, as reported by the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/17581833">BBC</a>, where Rovio animation head Nick Dorra revealed the 52 episode series will be coming to "all possible platforms."<br /><br />Dorra noted that the cartoon would provide fans with a new way to take part and would also draw newcomers to the franchise. Furthermore, Dorra stated that "Angry Birds is not just about the gameplay," elaborating that the franchise will evolve to be "less and less about the slingshot and more about the characters and their adventures and all different kinds of games in different forms." That's good news, because we've always felt that the blue bird's motivation is unclear.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/angry-birds-cartoon-coming-to-all-possible-platforms-this-year/">Angry Birds cartoon coming to 'all possible platforms' this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 11:30:00 EST. OK, we get it, Arnie. You don't have to keep going on with the April Fool's joke. We all thought the idea that you would do <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gwClKliG1gQHZfxEgfZrVFT3aAQw?docId=CNG.b82a40904dbf10491b0e0b8397955baa.491">a cartoon with comic legend Stan Lee called "The Governator"</a> was a good laugh when we heard about it last Friday. But actually <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw6J9OGSXpg">releasing a nonsensical trailer for the show</a> is a little much, don't you think?<br />
<br />
Come on, telling The Hollywood Reporter that you're also <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/arnold-schwarzenegger-announces-governator-film-174327?">developing comics, video games and eventually a movie</a> based on the property is really just beating the joke into the ground. Yes, the real key to comedy is believability, and the fact that you've got property house <a href="http://www.a2entertain.com/">A Squared Entertainment</a> spearheading this whole thing does add grounding to the gag. Sure, it's done cartoons about a 10-year-old Martha Stewart and Warren Buffett <a href="http://www.smckids.com/intro">giving business advice to a group of kids</a>, so it's the perfect peg of truth to hang the whole joke on.<br />
<br />
But come on, Arnold. April 1 was days ago. It's time to admit you're just kidding around on this one. <em>Please</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/the-governator-cartoon-is-real-soon-to-be-a-video-game/">The Governator cartoon is real, soon to be a video game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 05:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118032225">Variety reports</a> that when the '80s hit <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltron">Voltron</a></em> relaunches on the airwaves later this year in the form of <em>Voltron Force</em>, there will be video games on shelves to herald its arrival. According to the article, the titles will be published by THQ, which has secured the exclusive ability to do so from rights holder World Events Productions.<br />
<br />
No further details were divulged, such as which developer (or developers) will be in charged of translating the cartoon -- which features a five-person team piloting robotic lions that combine to form the titular mega-robot -- into something we can actually play. We've contacted THQ for comment and will update when we hear back.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/report-thq-forming-voltron-games/">Report: THQ forming Voltron games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 19:10:00 EST. You know what violent video gaming franchise we always thought would make an excellent Saturday morning cartoon? <em>Crackdown</em>. We're thinking of a modern day GI Joe series, with rugged super soldiers, death-defying acrobatic feats, the occasional car chase and a helpful PSA at the end of each episode. However, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-ceH7GXu40">Machinima.com recently posted</a> the first episode in a <em>real</em> cartoon series based on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/crackdown-2"><em>Crackdown 2</em></a>, and ... well, let's just say they went in a much different direction with it. A much <em>bloodier</em> direction.<br />
<br />
Check past the jump to see the first installment in "The Pacific City Archives," and think about how happy you are that whatever city you may be living in is relatively killer-mutant-free.<br />

And by "best," we really mean "worst." <br /><br />Mind you, since we're dealing with one of those things that's <em>so bad it's good</em>, we kinda do mean "best." By all means, enjoy the <em>best</em> that 1995's American <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_(TV_series)">Street Fighter cartoon</a> has to offer in a video love-hatingly assembled by Youtube's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/theswitcher">theswitcher</a>, posted after the break. Marvel at Guile's uncanny resistance to lightning! Gape at Blanka's earnest growling! Recoil in laughter at M. Bison's inappropriate giddiness! Scour the screen for Ken and Ryu's obviously missing surfboards! Fans of the popular TCG and cartoon series, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaotic"><em>Chaotic</em></a>, will get a much cheaper alternative when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=activision">Activision</a> releases <a href="http://media.prnewswire.com/en/jsp/includes/contents/printable.jsp?resourceid=3920687&amp;componentid=4216134">their video game version</a> of the card game. Combining action, role-playing, and turn-based elements, <em>Chaotic</em> will feature "vibrant, fully-realized 3D environments" and "various characters from the best-selling trading card game and hit animated series." Players can also look forward to "dramatic tactical battles, a variety of captivating gameplay modes, as well as powerful upgrades and valuable unlockables."<br /><br /><em>Chaotic</em> will be available for the DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 this fall.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/activision-publishing-game-based-on-chaotic-tcg/">Activision publishing game based on Chaotic TCG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 19:01:00 EST. Namco Bandai, er ... we mean <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/namco-bandai-forms-surge-label-targets-western-gamers/">Surge</a> rented out the Geisha House in Hollywood last night in order to throw a party for the launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/afro-samurai"><span style="font-style: italic;">Afro Samurai</span></a>, and Joystiq tagged along to check things out. The best thing about the night? Plenty of stations to play the game on both PS3s and Xbox 360s. Sadly, the sound was so loud in the place that you couldn't hear the hacking and slashing from the samurai with the gigantic hairdo. <br /><br />Also puzzling was the fact that Samuel L. Jackson was listed as a co-host of this party and was a no show. That was a real surprise, since he provides both the voices of Afro Samurai and his sidekick Ninja Ninja and is a co-producer of the series. Either he didn't show at all, or he really does have ninja-esque skills and we just missed him. <strong>Update</strong>: he actually did show up, we just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/1326444/full/">missed him</a>. Plus he was dressed for freezing weather.<br /><br />Check out the gallery below, and highlights after the break including a video performance by an afro-bedecked The RZA, who provides music both on the show and in the game.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/">Afro Samurai Launch in Los Angeles</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/#1326444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/slj2a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/#1322338"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/afrosamalaunch21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/#1322337"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/afrosamalaunch17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/#1322336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/afrosamalaunch16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/afro-samurai-launch-in-los-angeles/#1322335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/afrosamalaunch19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/joystiq-visits-the-afro-samurai-launch-party-in-los-angeles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq visits: The Afro Samurai launch party in Los Angeles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/joystiq-visits-the-afro-samurai-launch-party-in-los-angeles/">Joystiq visits: The Afro Samurai launch party in Los Angeles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 00:00:00 EST. When we started to write this, we were going to make jokes about how Link hates Zelda when he's not rescuing her, and how they have a dysfunctional relationship and all that, and then maybe about how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/tons-of-original-brawl-stages-are-now-at-your-fingertips/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> started with a <em>Super Smash Bros. Yelling Match.</em> <br /><br />But then we noticed something: Zelda is clearly in the foreground, because she's drawn slightly bigger than Link, and because Link has turned toward the camera to look at her. And yet <em>his hair is somehow in front of hers.</em> A horribly out-of-context scene plus a technical flub? Good luck outbidding us!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/2008/03/14/great-bioshock-promo-set/">GameSniped</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/excuse-me-for-selling-my-animation-cel-princess/">'Excuse me for selling my animation cel, Princess!'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 15 Mar 2008 12:30:00 EST. Here's evidence to the contrary: a "Sonic Sez" PSA from the cartoon starring Jaleel White. One of these appeared at the end of every episode, usually involving a supporting character doing something dumb and Sonic stepping in to be a jerk to them about it.<br /><br />While some of the other segments focused on important issues like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBR9tgTM0bI&amp;feature=related">smoking</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqVRCUBPc4E">alcohol</a>, and, uh, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jSKyWSvNgg">sexual harrassment</a>, we're partial to this one, in which Sonic makes his personal stance known on the subject of whether or not it's good to be stupid.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/friday-video-sonic-sez/">Friday Video: Sonic Sez</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 19:00:00 EST. <font color="red">Update</font>: The embeddable player gave us some difficulty, so we cut it from the post. Hit up the "read" link below to check out the video.<br /><br />What better for a Monday than a cartoon talking about the console wars, wouldn't you say? Wait, do you smell that? It's fanboy debate, simmering at a nice temperature and waiting to be turned into a full-on boil. We know you're ready to break the doors of our post down and leave your two cents. So, have at it!<br /><br />Oh, and watch if only for the PS3's role as an ottoman for the Wii. The game received mediocre scores when it first hit stores last August, but a couple publications reviewed the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shinen">Shin'en</a>-developed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/puzzle">puzzler</a> favorably (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendopower" style="font-style: italic;">Nintendo Power</a> gave it an 8.0 out of 10). <br /><br />GameStop currently has <span style="font-style: italic;">Pet Alien</span> on sale at its online shop for $9.99, and they'll even ship it for free if you put in "SAVER" as a coupon code. Priced that low, this might be worth trying out. Even if cartoon-licensed games aren't your thing, this seems like a great, cheap gift for a younger sibling/kid/brat. Head past the post break for <span style="font-style: italic;">Pet Alien's</span> trailer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/pet-alien-an-intergalactic-ten-dollar-palooza/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pet Alien: An Intergalactic Ten-dollar-palooza</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/pet-alien-an-intergalactic-ten-dollar-palooza/">Pet Alien: An Intergalactic Ten-dollar-palooza</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 13:10:00 EST. The latest homebrew to catch our eye is this animation app called <a href="http://masscat.afraid.org/ninds/FlickBook/flickbook.php"><span style="font-style: italic;">FlickBook</span></a>. The concept is pretty simple, but fun: you draw a series of frames and make them into animated films.<br /><br />The painting tools are very basic, so you won't be able to create detailed pictures like you would with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/fatbits-pocket-painter-mario-paint-for-the-ds/">Pocket Painter</a>. The program is still cool, though, and seems less difficult than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/13/more-ds-art-now-in-pictomation/">creating animations on your DS with Pictochat</a>. We also like that we can export the films to our computers as AVI files. Besides, stick figure animations reminds us lovingly of Don Hertzfeld's (slightly <span style="font-weight: bold;">NSFW</span>) "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuOvqeABHvQ">Rejected</a>" cartoons, which can only mean good things.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/29/make-animations-on-your-ds-with-flickbook/">Make animations on your DS with FlickBook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Oct 2007 14:50:00 EST. Yup, she's born a -- wait for it -- "worthless girl." Ouch, the clan initially decides to kill her, but they seem to settle on letting her live as an outcast.<br /><br />The series is starting to wrap up in preparation for <em>Heavenly Sword'</em>s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/heavenly-sword-dated-sept-12/">Sept. 12 launch</a>. We really do hope that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/26/heavenly-sword-demod/">crumb of a demo</a> isn't indicative of the whole experience. At this point, it's sad to think we'd prefer having three-minute animated shorts tell the story of the game each week than actually play the thing. We'll find out in a week.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-i/">Part I</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-ii/">Part II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-iii-and-iv/">Part III &amp; IV</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/04/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-v/">Heavenly Sword animated series: Part V</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 16:45:00 EST. Part three tells the tale of a son's betrayal and his desire to become a god. This animated series has been a great way to get exposition and background out of the way before the game releases <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/heavenly-sword-dated-sept-12/">Sept 12</a> -- we're still <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/26/heavenly-sword-demod/">fence-sitting</a> in angst after the PSN demo if these shorts will end up being cooler than the game.<br /><br />Part four can be found after the break, in it the clan protecting the sword prepares for the rebirth of the Heavenly Warrior ... a boy savior. Then there's a shocking cliffhanger during the birth. Um, not to ruin anything, but most should be able to guess what the revelation was if you've been paying attention to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/heavenlysword"><span style="font-style: italic;">Heavenly Sword</span></a> at all.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-i/">Part I</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-ii/">Part II</a><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-iii-and-iv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Heavenly Sword animated series: Part III &amp; IV</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-iii-and-iv/">Heavenly Sword animated series: Part III &amp; IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 16:45:00 EST. Sure it was. But so was the <em>Star Wars: Clone Wars</em> animated series on the Cartoon Network, and those things ended up being better than the movies. We won't be able to judge if the animated series is better than the game until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/heavenly-sword-dated-sept-12/">Sept. 12</a>, but so far we've been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/joystiq-impressions-heavenly-sword-ps3/">disappointed by neither</a>.<br /><br />In this first part of the animated series we learn the origins of the sword. Although eventually wielded by the Nariko, the sword actually belonged to ... well, watch the clip to find out. Oh, and we'll definitely take more of these animated series promoting games please. We're enjoying this and <a href="http://www.sports.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/minnie-driver-to-voice-animated-lara-croft/">GameTap's <em>Tomb Raider</em> animated series</a> very much.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/07/heavenly-sword-animation-explains-mythic-origins/">PS3 Fanboy</a>]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/">Heavenly Sword (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/#244550"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/hs-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/#244551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/hs-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/#244552"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/hs-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/#244553"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/hs-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/heavenly-sword-ps3/#244554"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/hs-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/heavenly-sword-animated-series-part-i/">Heavenly Sword animated series: Part I</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 13:45:00 EST. Sure, even in 1994 the show was a bit campy and featured thin plots and bad voice acting, but look how shiny everything was! Now Rainmaker Animation is getting ready to "relaunch the brand in a new way" by releasing a series of three feature-length episodes.<br /> <br /> The interesting bit is that we, potential viewers, help sculpt the plot. Five undiscovered writers were recruited by Rainmaker to prepare separate pitches for a new <em>ReBoot </em>storyline. These will be posted on the <a href="http://alpha.zeros2heroes.com/content/view/32/100/">Zeros 2 Heroes website</a> where visitors can work with each production team to help refine their ideas and later vote to choose their favorite pitch. "When it comes to long-standing genre entertainment properties, the fans are the real experts.", says Zeros 2 Heroes president Matt Toner.<br /> <br /> Not a bad idea. Fans know what they want to see, and this way Rainmaker will ensure nearly everyone is satisfied. Our expectations for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/g4">G4</a> television aren't particularly high, but we admit to having thought <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/cryptic-g4-ads-promote-animated-game-design-comedy/"><em>for a moment</em></a> that their new video game-oriented cartoon show <em>Code Monkeys</em> would at least be entertaining. Between having a theme song by geek folkster <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_coulton">Jonathan Coulton</a> and <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14473">cameos</a> from the likes of Steve Wozniak, Nolan Bushnell, and David Jaffe, there was hope that G4 could deliver something actually watchable. It isn't.<br /><br />Edgy video site Break.com is <a href="http://info.break.com/static/live/v1/pages/sponsors/codemonkeys/codemonkeys.html">hosting the pilot episode</a> of <span style="font-style: italic;">Code Monkeys</span>, which will premiere on G4's cable network on July 11th. The show, which uses an "8-bit" animation style, focuses on two video game programmers working at a company called Gameavision in the 80s. Peppered with crude drug humor, pop culture references, and bizarre video game-isms, <em>Code Monkeys</em> is oddly reminiscent of the film <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/04/grandmas-boy/"><em>Grandma's Boy</em></a>, and that's not meant as a compliment.<br /><br />Those with the time and brain cells to kill can check out the entire 20-minute pilot episode <a href="http://info.break.com/static/live/v1/pages/sponsors/codemonkeys/codemonkeys.html">here</a>. Everyone else can take a peak at the NSFW preview after the jump. The philosophically-minded RPG was unsurprisingly turned into an anime in 2005, and now ADV Film has announced (via <a href="http://dvd.ign.com/articles/797/797704p1.html">IGN</a>) that it is finally bringing the twelve-episode series to the US later this year.<br /><br />The series will be split into three DVDs, presumably four episodes apiece, with the first one coming out September 11. The MEGA series games will be more than just simple puzzle games, inviting the player to "stream movie clips to mesh together the most realistic cartoon experience ever." We're intrigued. After all, the MEGA series will be free, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/in-the-flash-four-second-firestorm/">flash-based games</a> and utilize the often-overlooked simple capabilities of the PS3. We're actually surprised no one has yet catered to our whims through this method before. However, as is typical with free content, pay-to-play content will likely follow if Cartoon Network's test run with the MEGA series games proves potentially lucrative. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to get a taste of what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/14/saturday-psp-background-explosion/">Cartoon Network</a> has to offer once the MEGA series games begin finding their way to a PS3 web browser near you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/cartoon-network-develops-web-based-games-for-consoles/">Cartoon Network develops web-based games for consoles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jun 2007 11:30:00 EST. The viral marketing got even weirder yesterday with an e-mailed press release that touts the two advertised games, <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=TX6GZINOffw"><em>Crosswalk</em></a> and <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=lYOse6BEzB4"><em>Bar Fight</em></a>, as "featur[ing] movable character, sound, and several exciting colors." The ads and the release both direct players to the <a href="http://www.gameavision.com">GameAVision web site</a>, which includes some unplayable, Atari 2600-style <a href="http://gameavision.com/games_2cardmonte.html">Flash games</a> and some <a href="http://gameavision.com/jobs.html">amusing help wanted ads</a>, among other things.<br /><br />What's going on here? Turns out the cryptic campaign is for an upcoming animated series that G4 <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/g4/press/149/G4_JOINS_FORCES_WITH_WRITERDIRECTORACTOR_ADAM_DE_LA_PEA_FOR_ANIMATED_PILOT_ABOUT_1980S_VIDEO_GAME_PROGRAMMERS.html">commissioned last year</a>. According to the <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/g4/press/149/G4_JOINS_FORCES_WITH_WRITERDIRECTORACTOR_ADAM_DE_LA_PEA_FOR_ANIMATED_PILOT_ABOUT_1980S_VIDEO_GAME_PROGRAMMERS.html">October 2006 press release</a>, the show will feature "Dave and Jerry, two video-game programmers whose lives are turned upside down when GameAVision, the freewheeling company at which they've spent their whole careers, is purchased by Bob Larrity, a crazed Texan businessman who knows nothing about video games except that they 'sell good.'"<br /><br />The premise actually sounds interesting, and the involvement of <em><a href="http://www.adultswim.com/shows/minoriteam/">Minoriteam</a></em> creator <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1089476/">Adam de La Pena</a> is encouraging. It's also nice to see G4 filling its schedule with some new, vaguely game-related programming instead of more <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/cops/index.html">reruns of <em>Cops</em></a> or something. Here's hoping the show lives up to its promise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/cryptic-g4-ads-promote-animated-game-design-comedy/">Cryptic G4 ads promote animated game design comedy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2007 15:55:00 EST. Viz Media has licensed the anime adaptation of the latest spinoff, <em>Mega Man Star Force (Ryuusei no Rockman </em>in Japan) for US audiences.<br /><br />The story is some baffling thing about a human kid merging with an alien entity called Omega-Xis to become <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/megaman">Mega Man</a>, which we're sure will make more sense after we play the game. It makes us a little nostalgic for the sparse robot vs. robot storyline of the original <em>Mega Man</em> series, but <em>not</em> the original <em>Mega Man</em> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_%28TV_series%29">cartoon</a>. Do you think the cartoon will be good enough to promote a game with <em>three versions?</em> We make fun of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/capcom">Capcom</a> for all the <em>Mega Man </em>overload, but we're huge fans and will no doubt fill our TiVos with episodes of this series.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/us-gets-equipped-with-mega-man-star-force-cartoon/">US gets equipped with Mega Man Star Force cartoon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mii">Mii</a> Channel is so much fun that even indie cartoonist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Kochalka">James Kochalka</a> wants in on the "HEY LOOK AT MY MIIS" fun, posting a series of Mii creations to his diary comic <a href="http://www.americanelf.com/"><em>American Elf</em></a> .<br /><br />His Mii creations veer toward the monsterish, which we enjoy. So many people limit their Mii designs to themselves, their grandparents, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/01/share-your-miis-with-the-world/">celebrities</a>. Unless these Miis <em>are</em> meant to represent Kochalka's family, in which case we're very, very sorry.<br /><br />We also love how the Mii Channel has resurrected the practice of sharing photographs of TV screens. It makes us nostalgic for magazine high-score columns.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/kochalka-not-too-cool-for-miis/">Kochalka not too cool for Miis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 14:45:00 EST. This June the situation will be remedied when <em>The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3</em> comes to DVD. The classic (and cheesy by today's standards) cartoon joins the ranks of other animated Nintendo-fare such as <em>The Super Mario Bros. Super Show</em> (not entirely animated, of course), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/16/captain-n-reacts-to-the-revolutionary-announcement/"><em>Captain N</em></a>, and <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>. All 26 episodes will be packaged in one box set laden with bonus content. Fulfill your nostalgic needs and empty thine wallet for Mario one more time.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/03/14/relive-super-mario-bros-3-cartoon-style/">DS Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/16/super-mario-bros-3-cartoon-coming-to-dvd/">Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon coming to DVD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 07:57:00 EST. We like to imagine that even before our age of technology, kids spent their lavatory leisure time playing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_in_a_cup">ball-in-a-cup</a> or some other antiquated equivalent. That's how far back this honorable tradition goes.<br /><br />As Infendo Radio host Scott Johnson can tell you, however, bathroom gaming does not come without its hazards. It's easy for things to go wrong while multi-tasking, but when you're sitting on the toilet is one of the worst times that can happen. Johnson has an entertaining, animated short describing his woeful experience. The Flash cartoon also serves as a warning to all you extreme bathroom gamers out there: playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/newsupermariobros"><em>New Super Mario Bros.</em></a> in the work washroom might be fun, but if you aren't careful, it can quickly turn into a commode catastrophe.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/the-perils-of-bathroom-gaming/">The perils of bathroom gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 20:00:00 EST. Comic book artist and musician of the wacky <a href="http://www.jameskochalkasuperstar.net/">James Kochalka</a> created Monkey vs. Robot eons ago, and has appeared on cds, as a graphic novel, and in animated form. However, this version was created with the PC game/simulation <em>The Movies</em>. Yes, it's inane. Sure, it's repetitive. Damn skippy, it's simple ... but c'mon, it's monkey vs. robot. <br /><br />Check out the damage after the jump. For a real royal rumble, someone needs to do a Monkey vs. Robot vs. Ninja vs. Pirate mashup. At least this thing is better than the episodes of <span style="font-style: italic;">Lost</span> that have aired so far this season. Sawyer vs. Robot, FTW!<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/15/todays-monkey-vs-robot-video-er-monkey-vs-robot-the-movie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's monkey vs. robot video: er, Monkey vs. Robot - The Movies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/15/todays-monkey-vs-robot-video-er-monkey-vs-robot-the-movie/">Today's monkey vs. robot video: er, Monkey vs. Robot - The Movies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jan 2007 05:25:00 EST. The game lets players create their own cartoon characters to propagate the world; over 15 million Toon characters have been created by PC players.<br /><br />Both Mac and PC users can access a handful of new "gags," including the old wedding-cake-in-the-face trick. The Mac release runs on PowerPC and Intel chips and is available now. Both versions have a monthly rate of $9.95 and can be downloaded from the <em>Toontown</em> <a href="http://www.toontown.com">site</a>. A free, three-day trial is also available.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/29/disney-toontown-out-for-macs/">Disney Toontown out for Macs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 03:05:00 EST. I was still a kid when the <em>Earthworm Jim</em> craze had reached its peak: some excellent games on the Genesis/SNES, a freaky cartoon on the WB, and some pretty weird action figures. The series' unique gross-out humor seems poised for a big comeback, as the PSP is getting an impressively beautiful continuation. IGN <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/724/724720p1.html">grabbed some screens</a> from a recent Atari event and had some pretty positive impressions:<br /> <blockquote>The spacesuit-wearing worm has indeed return. More importantly, he's returned in proper form. The game plays very much like its 2D predecessors... What makes it special, though, lies strictly with how developer Shiny Entertainment mixes those elements to form something altogether groovy and unique.</blockquote>You'll be sure to see more of this game on the Fanboy, as it still has a long time left in development.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/10/earthworm-jim-swirms-back-to-the-psp/">Earthworm Jim swirms back to the PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Aug 2006 11:15:00 EST. And like the original Elvis, you are <a href="http://www.ibiblio.org/elvis/alien.html">captured by aliens</a>, and are forced to participate in a "twisted 70s game show." No, you're not going to be playing <a href="http://www.cbs.com/daytime/price/"><em>The Price is Right</em></a>. You'll have to fight through dozens of enemies, killing everything in your sight. This "uber fast" shooter appears to play a bit like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/03/greatest-game-ever-hits-xbox-360-this-week/"><em>Robotron</em></a>, if it suddenly turned into <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2005/09/04/robocop-man-of-letters/"><em>Robocop</em></a> instead: making people's bodies explode in buckets of blood. The game will come with more than 50 levels, and include online infrastructure play for up to 8 players.<br /><br />If you're interested in some really brutal cartoon violence, and want to kill ninjas, hillbillies, clowns, pirates, and aliens, then you'll have to wait a while: <em>Cash Money Chaos</em> is coming "early 2007."
