In place of a paper manual, a digital manual will be provided and accessible in-game. Digital manuals are often more convenient than paper ones (except if you're trying to read one on your way back from the store) and are already becoming commonplace with the proliferation of downloadable games. Plus, we're not exactly going to lament the loss of the no-frills, black-and-white manuals most games include nowadays. But how does Shaun White feel about it?

"It's pretty cool that Ubisoft is making a conscious effort to go green with its new video game packaging," White said in a canned statement. "I'm excited for my new skateboarding game to come out and stoked that it will be the very first Ubisoft game to be part of their green packaging initiatives."

In addition to saving money for Ubisoft, scaling back on paper manuals -- no plans to extend the initiative to Wii, DS or PSP games were announced -- is part of an environmentally-conscious program from the publisher that also introduces a new recycled "ecoTech" case for PC games packaging. Splinter Cell: Conviction will be the publisher's first PC game to sport the new box when it arrives at retailers next week.

And besides, we think $13.49 for one of Hori's splendid Charge Stands is great value. $7.19 for those Star Wars Lightsaber styli isn't too shabby, either -- you could pick up the illuminating versions for $15.29 for covert beneath-the-sheets DS sessions while you were there!

Some cases for your DS Lite offer style. Others offer a boring boatload of function. If you aren't in the habit of mangling the coolness of your DS with some DIY disaster, then we have unearthed a few new ranges of professionally-made cases. They are mocking your arts and crafts abilities.

First up -- the MIYA and Brocade series, which is pretty much just a new bunch of designs for the purse variety. They are as good as ever, but each one costs around $70. Seriously, what's up with that?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Alumor range is nothing but pure metal goodness in a wide variety of colors. They will run you about $25 which makes much more sense from an accountant's point of view. Go mental, buy the purses! Your DS is worth it.

We don't have to tell you how cute this case is. It's etched right on the front of the kitty with the big eyes. And, with a see-through pouch on the back (complete with velcro strap for securing precious games), this thing also has "complete package" written all over it.

For further evidence of flickr user Michy Michelle's extreme skill at DS crafts, peep the Hello Kitty DS Lite. We just wish we had a bigger picture to drool over. Hello Kitty isn't really our thing, but if someone did the same thing to a DS except replaced the Hello Kitty with, say, He-Man, then we'd totally be down with it.

These cases almost do the impossible. As you can see, those with an Onyx DS Lite can slap the red protector on there and pretend they own the "senior edition" DS Lite. Not only that, but folks (like us) with a boring old Polar White DS Lite can add a bit of flair to their DS, punching up the color without spending the cash required for a new unit.

Oh, how we love you DS. Your sleek, sexy design is so cherished that we often feel like a mother bear protecting her cub, clutching you tightly against our body as to keep you from harm. And, what sleek device doesn't deserve as equally snazzy a case?

These latest pieces of DS armor presented by Famitsu look quite nice ... on the inside. As for the outside, they're pretty plain and black. But, their job is to protect and they look like they do just that.

The cases are manufactured by Suono and available for purchase via their website here. Each retails for 4,100 Yen (or, about $36).

When we're not crafting totally elaborate and stylish cases on our own, we spend a lot of time checking out retail options for both protection and adding a touch of style to our DS. Today, we stumbled upon retailer Pacific Design, which offers an array of unique cases and pouches for your DS Lite that somewhat resemble a kit that Nyko put out on the market back in July.

The difference here is that these cases don't feature the charger and extra styli that the Nyko pack features. These cases, though, feature extra zippered compartments, a carrying strap and compartments for storing games.

So, what do you think? Too ugly? Too expensive?

Reader Andrea sent us pictures of her Pokemon DS Lite cozies, which are either knit or crocheted-- we can't tell the difference. They're big yarn knots in interesting shapes, in any case. She made a Pikachu and a Mew, both of which open up at the neck like Pez dispensers to allow access to the cozied DS inside.

Suffice it to say that, were we normal people and not, you know, DS Fanboy, we're pretty sure this would be the first time we felt the desire to hug a DS. But we feel that way every time we hear the words Contra 4.

They've got tails! There's just no resisting that. In fact, we can't stand to look at our stupid tailless cases anymore, and we think we're just going to toss them in the garbage.

Gametech seems to have a taste for the gaudy when it comes to DS Lite covers, but they totally got it right at least once. This DS Lite case features a kunoichi (female ninja) design in simple white on black fabric. It's cute and striking at the same time.

The design looks quite similar to R Stevens' I am Ten Ninjas t-shirt, although much more feminine and much less blocky. We'd love to clothe our DS in such mystery, but at 3,980 yen ($32.26) it's a little pricey for our tastes. But, then, so are most sandwiches.

Evolving from the designs of Team Xtender's past mods, the ii-Hot Rock case aims to do more than just light the Wii with colorful LEDs. The $62.95 shell comes equipped with a digital thermometer that displays the console's internal temperature, and the LEDs shift with that measurement. Every 5° change pushes their hue towards either a colder or warmer glow, luminescing a light blue at sub-28°C and glaring klaxon red when temperatures over 55°C are detected.

If you're paranoid about overheating consoles, a mod like this would be perfect for quickly warning you to either shut your system off or execute an emergency saucer separation, putting distance between you and the rest of the starship before the Wii's warp core breaches. When we last checked in with Acid Mods forumer Rocky, he had outfitted his DS Lite with a clear shell and several LEDs, wowing all the ladies and fellas with its electric blue brilliance. His latest experiment adds a sound amp chip that floods the LEDs with light in time with the handheld's audio. Don't feel like driving out to the dance club tonight? Just find yourself a dark room, load up Darude's "Sandstorm" on your DS Lite, and you've got the same experience right in your hands! Sort of.

Rocky has posted a photo tutorial of the installation process, but we're much too squeamish to replace our stock casing or do any sort of soldering. If that seems like too much hardware hacking, you can settle with just watching a video of the jazzed up DS Lite flickering along with music tracks and video game sounds after the post break. Though we can't condone his use of a flash cart to load backed up games, we won't let that get in the way of imagining how cool it'd be to play our favorite rhythm titles with this mod.

Scurge: Hive tortured everyone who was waiting for it with frequent delays. If you have, in turn, delayed your purchase of the isometric Metroid-esque game, you have been rewarded with a shot at a really cheap copy. GameStop has new copies for $10, which is pretty much worth it for the boxart alone.

Speaking of superficial matters, GameStop is also selling a cheap DS Lite case from Intec with smart-looking game storage compartments for $4.99. Sure, it's no $3 leather case, but it looks pretty nice and keeps scratches away. Plus, with no color, you don't have to worry about what color case you'll end up with.

Looking for a decent case to clothe your DS Lite with, but not willing to spend more than a few bucks? Even if you lack the craft skills to create one from scratch, there's still hope for you frugal folks.

Circuit City has thrown Intec's DS Lite Ultimate Leather cases into the bargain bin, selling the magnetic clasping cover for $2.99. You could probably buy one with just the change you'd find on the electronics retailer's parking lot or in its pay phone coin returns. Try not to be too obvious about it though. You'll look like a homeless vagrant foraging for pennies, and the store manager might call the cops to escort you off the property.

Intec's cases come in white, pink, black, blue, blue, and camo, some of these colors having "Crocco" variations or only being available with the crocodile texture. The sale is available both in-store and online, but much like Nerf's DS Lite Armor, the styles are shipped randomly. Even the vagabonds will point and laugh if you come around with the pink, crocodile-leather case that you'll inevitably get after ordering from Circuit City's site.

Team Xtender, the group behind the chrome casing and Black Knight Wii mods, plans to diversify its line of I-Case replacement shells with a more colorful look. The mod manufacturer has posted photos of its concept models in their new outfits, dressing the Wii and its stand in red, yellow, green, blue, and pink.

Nothing has been finalized yet, so don't expect to see these vibrant kits on the market for a while. The I-Case's pricing has been a little more competitive than the SHOCKii's ($40 versus $50), so we're glad to see some competition in the replacement shell market. NIS America just opened their own online shop, and it's already decently stocked with neat stuff. This kimono-style DS Lite cover isn't exactly one of them right now-- it's available for preorder only-- but as soon as it's available we're considering getting one.

The cover comes in eight colors, all of which add an air of serene beauty to your DS as well as a barrier against unwanted contact. Touching is good, unless it's your keys "touching" your DS in your pocket.

They don't stop there, either, taking on all comers including GBA games, as well as the DS Lite itself. With a couple solutions to the dilemma of trying to keep one's most precious gadget safe from enemies both foreign and domestic, we're wondering if we should trade up to one of the cases pictured and just toss out our case we received at E3 last year.

Having decided that a mere pocket wasn't enough to protect his brand new DS Lite and games, inventive blogger John Spain decided to grab a pair of old jeans and thoroughly molest it with a rotary cutter, copious amounts of glue and intricate Origami-style folding techniques. The DS-friendly end result is nothing short of amazing, proving yet again that pants are far better off in the hands of a bored man than on the legs of a busy one.

TeamXtender has released their first set of full case replacements for your boring white Xbox 360. Their website doesn't list a price, but they come in black, gold and crystal clear. Not quite as cool as the concept art they showed off a few months ago, but still a snazzy way to void your warranty.

In our opinion, we think these cases would be even more apt for the insanely wealthy and bored. However, if you think that those rhinestones you so meticulously glued onto your PSP are still not bling enough for you, then get your classy self to apparel maker Dunhill (not to be mistaken for the cigarette pushers) and peruse their line of pure metrosexual PSP fare. They currently have two cases up for sale, the Motorities and the Confidential; both crafted in quality fabric and leather. No cheap materials here. We couldn't find a price for the Confidential, but if the £85 tag on the more basic Motorities is any hint, expect to spend as much for it as you would the PSP to put in it. Smart thinking, you!
