<br /> <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Top_5_Castlevania_Games'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> This week marks the release of the highly anticipated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/order-of-ecclesia/"><em>Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a>. Poised to be more than the usual <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidvania/">Metroidvania</a>-romp, <em>Ecclesia</em>'s glyph system coupled with great diversity in environments and level layout (we're apparently not stuck inside the castle anymore) has all of us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/alisha-karabinus/">whip-enthusiasts</a> drooling with anticipation. To be honest, Konami could slap the word "Castlevania" on a box of assorted animal feces and we'd still pre-order. Here's the part where I'm supposed take a cheap shot at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castlevania-judgment/"><em>Castlevania Judgment</em></a>, but admit it: no matter how many times we all spit on the brawler, we never seem to stop checking out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/tgs08-bouncing-beatdowns-in-castlevania-judgment/">movies</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/pass-your-castlevaniastic-judgment-on-these-new-screens/">screenshots</a>. <em>Castlevania</em> has us whipped; pardon the hideous pun. <br /><br /> Assuming I haven't lost all credibility after the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/22/top-5-mega-man-games/"><em>Mega Man</em></a> list, here's another stab at ranking the best of a legendary franchise. Unlike <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/">most other Top 5's</a>, this list is <em>not</em> necessarily Nintendo-specific. Take a gander, and try to pretend that you don't know what number one is. <br /></div>

Classic 2D<em> Castlevania</em> is here to stay. At least, that's how we feel after playing the latest in the series to hit the Nintendo DS, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/"><em>Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a>. While the game stays true to the flat-faced games we've seen in the past, there's enough here in this little square cartridge to make things feel fresh ... blood fresh.<br /><br /> One of the elements that stands out the most in this new <em>Castlevania</em> is the glyph system. In order to carry out actions, characters absorb glyphs (which are usually either weapons, i.e. a rapier, or magic, i.e. flying fire balls) and assign them to the X and Y buttons. You can equip the same glyph more than once, making things slightly more economical. You have a green bar under your red health bar -- this is a magic gauge. This depletes as you use your glyphs, but refills quickly as soon as you stop performing any actions with them; it basically regulates your attacks, so you won't be able to mindlessly breeze through the game.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/">Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/#1080341"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0769_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/#1080340"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0944_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/#1080339"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0906_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/#1080338"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0850_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/#1080337"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0853_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/joystiq-hands-on-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/joystiq-hands-on-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/">Joystiq hands-on: Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Sep 2008 08:00:00 EST. <br />Those of you who want to get to know Shanoa a little better should check out the vid up top, which features her kicking some undead butt. She might not bring too many new things to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Castlevania</span>-verse, but she still looks like a pretty badass character. Besides, she "shall become the sword that clears away evil" -- what more do you want? <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-ds-fanboy-hands-on-with-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/"><br style="font-style: italic;" /><span style="font-style: italic;">Order of Ecclesia</span></a> is currently one of our most anticipated DS games, though, so do we really need another reason to convince you to watch this trailer? What can I say about <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/basically-order-of-ecclesia-looks-rad/">Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a>?</em> You've played this game plenty of times before. Sure, there are some slight changes here and there, but, ultimately, this is pretty much the same as every other DS <em>Castlevania</em> title released. Don't take that as a <em>bad</em> thing, though.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-ds-fanboy-hands-on-with-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy hands-on with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-ds-fanboy-hands-on-with-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/">E308: DS Fanboy hands-on with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST. This stylish trailer introduces us to the protagonist of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/see-order-of-ecclesia-next-ds-castlevania/"><em>Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em></a> -- the raven-haired Shanoa (who looks a bit too similar to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/new-bullet-witch-media/"><em>Bullet Witch</em>'s Alicia</a> for our comfort), and her many, many methods for murdering and dismembering ol' Vlad's minions. Sure, she may not wield the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania">Vampire Killer whip made famous in other <em>Castlevania</em> titles</a>, but she does dispatch a <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=2g1fr5vk72M">Giant Enemy Crab</a> with a falling elevator, which arguably possesses a bit more panache than the Belmont family's legendary cord.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/first-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia-trailer-is-awesome-whiples/">First Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia trailer is awesome, whipless</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 23:00:00 EST. It's even greater than the time we first saw <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/castlevania-poster-of-awesome/">the last <em>Castlevania </em>game</a>. If it builds upon all of the amazing features of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/04/metareview-castlevania-portrait-of-ruin/"><em>Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin</em></a>, we'll probably just die right then and there after playing it. We'll have seen everything we've needed to see and be able to die a nice, peaceful death.<br /><br />Until that day, though, you can bet we're salivating for every single juicy morsel of <em>Castlevania</em> news we can get our grubby little mitts on. This latest interview with Koji Igarashi is no exception, as he details some of the things about <em>Ecclesia</em>. Like, why did he go with a female protagonist? Hint: it's because the fans wanted it!<br /><br />Believe us, we've far from ruined the interview for you. It's got some interesting stuff in there, so give it a watch.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/igarashi-talks-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/">Igarashi talks Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 13:15:00 EST. The ESRB rated <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp">another unannounced title</a>, informing us that we can expect Konami to release <em>Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</em> at some point in the future for the Nintendo DS (it's rated Teen, for those who were curious). <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52199">ShackNews</a> notes that the title was also in the US Patent and Trademark Office's database with a title and logo.<br /><br />We've contacted Konami for comment, but still haven't heard anything back. We'll have to wait and see if this new entry in the Castlevania franchise stars a member of the Belmont or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/konami-ad-plays-ellis-island-changes-belmonts-to-beaumonts/">Beaumont</a> family.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/esrb-rates-unannounced-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia/">ESRB rates unannounced Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 17:30:00 EST.
