These features will come to the tiny Android console later in the year, an Ouya representative tells The Verge. The Ouya will support online multiplayer, as long as developers build that functionality into their games.

Ouya opened its storefront to developers last week, bulking up its games offering prior to launch. Those who didn't donate to the Ouya Kickstarter will be able to purchase a console for $99 in June, online or in physical stores.
Ouya won't ship with online chat, friends lists, achievements originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 21:45:00 EST. You can see the American version of the video above. Notably, Nintendo's online "Friend Codes" have been replaced by a Nintendo Network ID.

The ID will be usable on other Nintendo systems - strangely, 3DS was not specified - as well as smartphones and PCs. The Nintendo Network ID is also the account associated with eShop purchases, though other users on the same Wii U can play downloaded software. Up to twelve distinct users can sign up on a single console.

Users can exchange this numeric identifier to add friends, just like the Friend Code, but it will also be possible to register friends you meet in the "Miiverse" community and the "WaraWara Plaza" lobby that appears when you turn the system on.

"Miiverse is a service integrated into the game console itself," president Satoru Iwata explained in an Iwata Asks interview with Miiverse co-developer Hatena, "so if players can check each other's play histories, they can interact on that basis." In this way, players can talk about shared game experiences and become friends.

Registered friends will also be able to talk to each other over Wii U Chat, transmitting video from the Wii U GamePad's camera. Users will be able to draw images on the chat window while they talk, opening up a world of possibilities. Okay, one possibility that we won't name. You can see Iwata demonstrating the Wii U Chat software with NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime above. "We can all feel better about my job security after hearing Reggie's Japanese," Nintendo director of product marketing (and Miyamoto's interpreter) Bill Trinen noted in the video.

Users can place calls to one another through Wii U Chat, with a light on the GamePad blinking to indicate an incoming call.
Wii U 'Nintendo Network ID' and 'Wii U Chat' explained originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 11:30:00 EST. While we can understand the potential risque-ness of some of these words -- especially "help," which we're sure was added at the request of the XBL customer-service team -- without context we don't see the harm in them.

These words are fair game in singleplayer (with the Family Setting turned off), but Microsoft adds an extra filter to Live play, developer Denki's Gary Penn told Edge: "Quarrel uses the Collins official Scrabble dictionary comprising over 110,000 words up to eight letters in length, including a huge collection of words deemed 'offensive' by Collins, such as 'arse', 'shit', 'wank' and 'fuck.'"

Other banned words include "start," "skid," "poop," "hung," "dice" and "god." We're stumped on how to use "dice" in an offensive manner, but we've seen "fag" flung around Xbox Live chat with alarming, unfiltered regularity, so we're not going to try to figure out Microsoft's regulation process here.
XBL language filter prevents harmless words from being used in Quarrel originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 18:40:00 EST.
During the aptly named Game Tools and Middleware event held yesterday in Tokyo, Sony showed off an intriguing, terror-inspiring feature of the PlayStation Vita: "Face Control." That capability isn't inherently horrifying, but the tech demo Sony used to illustrate its uses certainly was. While video chatting with a remote friend using the handheld, players used their facial movements to control the eerie, lifeless faces of 3D avatars.

You can check out a video of the tech demo posted above. Just be forewarned: If we're ever chatting with any of you on our PS Vita, your human face is suddenly replaced by that of a virtual tiger, we're going to hang up immediately and then burn your very memory from our consciousness, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-style.
Sony demos PS Vita 'Face Control,' we get super creeped out forever originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST. aHey, cross-game chat is coming to PlayStation ... Vita! It's called "Party," and according to a quick explanation by Kaz Hirai, it allows people to talk to each other through the PlayStation Vita system even while playing different games, using either a headset or the microphone built into the Vita device.

We're not used to that name yet. "Vita." Will we ever be?
PlayStation Vita features voice chat via 'Party' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 21:27:00 EST. We're finding it hard to accept the fact that future generations of Wii gamers won't be able to experience the raw thrill of one roomful of people chatting it up with another roomful of people during an Animal Crossing: City Folk session. Sadly, that's the hard, hard truth one must extract from Nintendo's recently announced decision to phase out the Wii Speak peripheral, which is now only available "at limited retail locations."

Nintendo refused to hammer the final nail into the poor, puck-shaped microphone's coffin, however, telling GameSpot that "additional shipments can be made if consumer demand increases." In that case, we suppose our grandchildren can still have conversations with strangers' living rooms -- but they'll have to organize some kind of movement in order to do so.
Nintendo phasing out Wii Speak peripheral from retailers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 15:05:00 EST. Kinect adopters won't be limited to spending face time with just each other come launch, as Marc Whitten, Xbox Live general manager, has confirmed the sensor will interact with Windows Live Messenger on PCs. "I'm also excited to confirm that Video Kinect will integrate with Windows Live Messenger at launch, so Xbox Live members can video chat with hundreds of millions of PC users around the world," he said in a press announcement.
However, it appears the cross-platform functionality will be limited to video chat. Microsoft is allegedly preparing to implement Live functionality into the free suite of games that comes with all Windows-enabled PCs: Solitaire, Chess, Checkers, Spades, Hearts, Backgammon, Minesweeper, Purple Place, Spider Solitaire and Freecell. This tip comes courtesy of our trusted source (who accurately predicted Lucidity, NBA 2K10 Draft Combine and Tecmo Bowl: Throwback). Reportedly, each Windows game will not only get Achievements, but also chat and leaderboard support. While unconfirmed by our source, we'd anticipate this to be a free update.

If true -- and hey, our tipster's batting a thousand (that's sports talk for reliable) -- adding Live functionality to these games would be an ideal gateway for Microsoft to usher new users into Live and the Achievements system. After registering a free Games For Windows Live account, a new user would be able to instantly start building Gamerscore cred with the free games included on Windows PCs. It's Drug Dealing 101 -- give 'em the first fix for free, and they'll be hooked!
Rumor: Microsoft's Live support coming to free Windows games; Minesweeper, Solitaire and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 15:05:00 EST.
With all the excitement surrounding tonight's Spike TV Video Game Awards, we know you'll be a good fanboy and watch the show either on TV or via the award show's live stream. And instead of watching all by your lonesome, we recommend jumping over to Major Nelson's site and joining the live chat event.

The VGA live chat (accessible here or through your favorite IRC client) will promptly kick off at 9:00PM eastern over on MajorNelson.com. You'll be among your community peers which means you can discuss, speculate and express your fanboyism while watching the VGA news unfold. We'll be hanging out in the chat session and we've also learned that Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb will be stopping by sometime during the VGA airing. It's socialization, it's awards, and it's just fun.
Be social, join Major Nelson's VGA live chat event originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 19:30:00 EST. Nintendo plans to introduce an independent Channel for the WiiSpeak peripheral, planned for release in Japan on November 20. Nintendo of America plans to release the channel stateside on November 16. It'll be a free download with the WiiSpeak.

According to NOA's announcement, it works for up to four groups, with each participant in each group represented by a Mii. The Channel allows sending of voice messages and photos. It's simple, yes, but at least people who buy the peripheral outside of an Animal Crossing bundle will have something to do.
Nintendo sneaks Wii Speak Channel announcement out originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 13:14:00 EST. When the WiiSpeak peripheral was unveiled for Animal Crossing: City Folk, we were happy to finally get voice chat on our Wii. But, a curious slide at the conclusion of Nintendo's E3 keynote showed the device has a very peculiar brick-like adapter that the USB end's cable plugs into. Now, we're assuming this is just a power brick, but you know what your school teachers told you about assuming!

At least one thing is certain: the thing has enough cable to wrap around Nintendo HQ many times over.
E308: WiiSpeak brings yet another power brick to the table? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 18:30:00 EST. Those lucky enough to participate in the upcoming God of War chat should have received an email with further details. In attendance will be Ready at Dawn's Dana Jan, Garret Foster, Marc Turndorf and Ru Weerasuriya.

The chat is scheduled for this Friday at 4PM PST (7PM EST). Obviously, you'll want to get there early if you want the best (virtual) seats in the house. If for some reason, you can't attend, you can also submit questions via e-mail at: playstation_community_support @ playstation.sony.com.

We love what Sony's doing for its rabid God of War fan base. We'll be there, just like you, eyes glued to the answers that the Ready at Dawn team will provide. See you there.
Get your Qs ready: God of War chat scheduled for Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Aug 2007 23:15:00 EST. Ready at Dawn, the developers of the upcoming PSP-exclusive God of War: Chains of Olympus, is preparing a special treat for those that have been selected to receive the playable UMD demo. The developers are planning a special live chat with their fans. However, they'd like to remind fans that they'll need a PlayStation.com user ID before July 30th to participate.

Details of the chat are still forthcoming, but be sure that we'll have all the information here on PSP Fanboy when it goes live.
God of War team prepares live chat for fans originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 10:00:00 EST. What will you be using to take advantage of the online voice chat feature? Nintendo's official headset, Turtle Beach's Earforce D2, or Datel's Communicator? Or will you be slumming it with the handheld's built-in microphone?

If you're still in the market for a headset solution, Nintendo Gal has posted a comparison chart and her analysis on the three products. Testing their comfort, durability, sound output, and recording quality, she was able to determine which one deserves our hard-earned allowance money. There are even recording samples available that you can listen to and weigh in on yourself.

We're surprised that the Earforce D2 was judged as the best of the lot, but seeing that it's also the most expensive at $19.99 (Nintendo's headset is on sale for $9.99 at Amazon), it's good to know that you're not paying that premium for nothing. Turtle Beach's headset outclassed the official one in every category except recording quality, while Datel's Communicator was laughed out of the competition.
DS headsets thrown into ring, forced to fight to the death originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 22 Apr 2007 15:30:00 EST. It might be better than nothing, but we were really hoping for something a little more useful when we opened up that item box. Despite its polished interface and availability with every Nintendo DS system, hardly anyone uses PictoChat regularly. This can be attributed to the application's limited functionality and lack of online support. Unless you're sending phallic doodles to a nearby friend, there's really no reason for using the communication utility.

Thankfully, there are several homebrew projects that better realize the DS' potential as an instant messenger or a canvas for digital artists. Pictoblog is another application that extends the system's capabilities, enabling users to sketch something out on the handheld's touchscreen, and upload the picture to a post on their blog. Pictoblog works with a number of CMSs like WordPress, Movable Type, and many others.

Developer 0xtob has set up a test blog for users to experiment with, but it probably won't be long before the site is flooded with crude illustrations of the male anatomy.
Pictoblog, picture blogging with the DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. One point that Nintendo seems more than willing to drive home, however, is the fact that the pair of games will feature Wi-Fi voice-chat, as did Metroid Prime: Hunters in March 2006.

It's a nice feature, but the DS speakers and built-in microphone were hardly up to task of quality conversation; thus, Nintendo has decided to release its DS headset right along with it. Listed at a paltry $14.99 and shipping one day later than Pokemon D&P, it certainly looks like a decent pick-up for those interested in free hot-spot chatting. And can you imagine the trash-talking?

"Your Machop is more like your mom-chop, ohhhhh snap."

Umm ... in retrospect, we apologize for submitting you to that.
Pokephone Diamond and Pearl originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 17:00:00 EST. Up today: WiiAIM. Yep, there are some folks working to enable AIM chat on the Wii. We're a little skeptical about the practicality of such an application (navigating the onscreen keyboard to surf the web is bad enough), but we thought we'd ask you what you thought of such a move. The California teen's father caught wind of the alleged plot and alerted the FBI. A search warrant was issued, and police hauled the boy off, along with his Xbox 360 and other "items of evidentiary value." He has since been released to his parents; but it's unclear if his Xbox was returned.

The event has seemingly triggered a similar threat at the local high school, where police have begun patrolling school grounds in an effort to thwart potential violence. "Our suspicion is that the [Xbox Live] incident trickled over to the high school," said Teays Valley Superintendent Jeff Sheets. No further arrests have been made.

[Thanks, Ian]
Xbox Live threat provokes high school lockdown originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 04:25:00 EST. The event's currently scheduled for Monday, March 20, 6:00 PM-Tuesday, March 21, 6:00 AM PT.

Greg'llbe "offering commentary about the experience as it transpires" via the picture-in-picture feed, but he won'tbe taking part in the concurrent subscriber chat room planned so as "to avoid any outside influences on his timespent evaluating the game." Well, good luck, Greg, and make sure to stay hydrated... 'cuz it's gonna be a longnight.

See also:
