We were all kinds of ready to pick up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/all-star-cheer-squad-does-wii-rhythm-gaming-better-than-konami/"><em>All Star Cheer Squad</em></a>. The day it released, we were waiting at the GameStop, with our money in hand, ready to pick up the title. In the end, we didn't, because, really, how were we to know if this was the ultimate cheerleading sim? Thankfully, a <em>real</em> cheerleader has stepped in and told us what to think!<br /><br />Natalie, a cheerleader with the New York Jets Flight Crew, put the game through its paces, stomping on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/balance-board">Balance Board</a> and using the Wiimote and Nunchuk to bust poses all over the place. Her final verdict? Well, she enjoyed it, but you're just going to have to watch the video past the break for the rest of her thoughts.<br /><br />Seriously, though, somebody should tell her that Nintendo doesn't suggest wearing huge boots while using the Balance Board. Doesn't she know how expensive that thing is?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/ny-jets-cheerleader-reviews-all-star-cheer-squad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NY Jets cheerleader reviews All Star Cheer Squad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/ny-jets-cheerleader-reviews-all-star-cheer-squad/">NY Jets cheerleader reviews All Star Cheer Squad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 19:01:00 EST. Okay, so <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/namco-introduces-we-cheer-for-wii/"><em>We Cheer</em></a> is a game about cheerleading, and that immediately raises the hackles of most Wii gamers sensitive to the system's relative lack of games about men firing guns at each other in space. <em>Yes</em>, this game was probably designed for someone <em>other</em> than males aged 18-35. <br /><br />However, we can't help but admire the soundtrack. Aside from a few diversions into modern "we had to put this stuff on here for the kids" territory like the Ataris' <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6sxmWILUsI">"In This Diary"</a>(which makes <em>no</em> sense for cheerleading), it's a greatest-hits compilation of our high school pep rallies, full of vintage '90s music designed to make <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b714Wi4CDsQ">EVERYBODY DANCE NOW</a>.</em><br /><br />We don't really know the nuances of cheerleading, but we imagine that <em>were</em> we to try to rouse a crowd, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtStNQ_wDh8">"It Takes Two"</a> by Rob Base &amp; DJ EZ Rock would be a good start. Head past the break for the full track list.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/we-cheer-for-a-surprisingly-non-awful-soundtrack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>We Cheer for a surprisingly non-awful soundtrack</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/we-cheer-for-a-surprisingly-non-awful-soundtrack/">We Cheer for a surprisingly non-awful soundtrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Sep 2008 18:13:00 EST. <br />Nintendo is at it again, stretching the definition of "instrument" to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/wii-music-teaches-the-world-how-to-play-the-dog/">breaking point</a>. Today's <em>Wii Music</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/todays-instrument">instrument</a> is the Cheerleader, though it could just as easily be called Excitable Human Being. It works by punching the air with your Wiimote and Nunchuk, and creates the kind of sounds last heard from the mouth of our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/gc-2008-left-right-chu-chu-ulala-in-samba/">favorite intergalactic news reporter</a>. Oh, and before you start mocking this, don't forget that <span style="font-style: italic;">some companies</span> are building <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/namco-introduces-we-cheer-for-wii/">entire</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/all-star-cheer-squad-does-wii-rhythm-gaming-better-than-konami/">games</a> around this one "instrument."<br /><br /><br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/thq-brings-some-pep-to-the-wii/"><em>All-Star Cheer Squad</em></a> may be a cheerleading game intended for young, "casual" players, but it doesn't sound like THQ and developer Gorilla Games have made a dumbed-down experience at all. If anything, it sounds more complicated than non-cheerleaders can handle, delivering a multifaceted motion-controlled rhythm game that, according to IGN's Mark Bozon, "(pulls) off the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DDR/">DDR</a>-like experience on Wii better than Konami has."<br /><br />Movements scroll by from right to left, and players are to maneuver the Wiimote and nunchuk into each position when the movement hits the middle of the screen. The game doesn't just judge successful motions, it also awards points for successfully "locking in" each pose (presumably holding still in the target position for a short time). If <em>that</em>'s not enough, you can get the Balance Board out and add various step positions to the mix. <em>Cheer Squad</em> even includes a routine editor that can save custom routines to the Wiimote.<br /><br />We've never had any interest in cheerleading, but as a premise for a rhythm-action video game, it sounds surprisingly fun.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/all-star-cheer-squad-does-wii-rhythm-gaming-better-than-konami/">All-Star Cheer Squad does Wii rhythm gaming 'better than Konami has'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 13:15:00 EST. If you have a problem <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl539OLU_Ik"><em>bringing it</em></a> in real life, perhaps you should check out Namco's upcoming game, <em>We Cheer</em>. And now that we finally get a look at it, we must admit that we are feeling kind of the same as when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/23/were-not-cheering-for-we-cheer/">we first heard about it</a>: meh. Honestly, does this look good to you?<br /><br />We'd say it's a nice title for the young'ns, but, to be honest, if it was <em>our</em> kid, we wouldn't let them play a game with all these girls in ridiculously skimpy cheerleading suits. It just stinks of Bratz. Are we alone in feeling that way?<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/namco-introduces-we-cheer-for-wii/">Namco introduces We Cheer for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 13:30:00 EST. Can we get a facepalm, please?<br /><br />Not that we have anything against cheerleading. We're just curious why there's a sudden revival of the sport, which has inspired two companies to bring it to the Wii. Seriously, people, it's been <em>years</em> since the Spartans SNL sketches or <em>Bring it On</em> made the general public view cheerleading as anything other than an excuse to ogle cute girls.<br /><br />Nevertheless, joining THQ in the pep parade is Namco Bandai with a game called <em>We Cheer</em>. There's no word yet on whether Namco's game will involve the balance board, too, but we think it's a safe bet (think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/01/we-join-japanese-families-in-skiing-this-may/"><em>We Ski</em></a>). <br /><br />We hope this is the last cheerleading game we'll ever have to write about; unless, of course, iNiS feels inspired to bring an <em>Ouendan</em> adaptation to the Wii. We'd be totally fine with that. Seriously, iNiS, make it happen.<br /><em><br />*Note: Looking up "cheerleader" in Google Image Search is absolutely scandalous.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/23/were-not-cheering-for-we-cheer/">We're not cheering for We Cheer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. The subject of the game is, oddly enough, cheerleading, making it the first of its kind.<br /><br />Unless you're a six-year-old girl, <em>All Star Cheer Squad </em>sounds pretty terrifying -- there's really no other way to describe "squad competitions and one-on-one cheer-offs." The game will also utilize the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Balance-Board/">Balance Board</a>, making it only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit/">the</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/family-ski/">third</a> confirmed Wii game to make use of the peripheral.<br /><br />In case you're wondering what a cheerleading game might entail, it's probably what you'd expect: you learn cheers, make up a few of your own, practice them, and then perform. <br /><br />So, tell us, readers: how funky is your chicken?<br /><br />[Thanks, John!]<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/thq-brings-some-pep-to-the-wii/">THQ brings some pep to the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Mar 2008 14:15:00 EST.
