<br />
A series staple is being added to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>: Chocobos. A year after release, players can now purchase and rent the birds for the purpose of traveling across Eorzea. Three Chocobo stables have opened up in-world, in which you can get your very own Chocobo whistle.<br />
<br />
If that's not efficient enough, or Final Fantasy-y enough, you can also now take an airship ride between any of three ports. "Departure and arrival cutscenes will accompany each flight," Square Enix said. "The voyage itself, however, will be over in a matter of seconds." Now that's <em>Final Fantasy</em>. A later update will allow players to roam the decks and view the scenery.<br />
<br />
Even <a href="http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/topics/detail?id=a77a38bf2dcace0c49921ea5e673ad91d4928cb4">materia</a> is returning to the series in the latest update, as a resource crafted from old, well-used equipment. It's as if Square is desperately trading on nostalgia to attract <em>FF7</em> players to its MMO.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/23/chocobos-airships-and-materia-somehow-werent-in-final-fantasy/">Chocobos, airships, and materia somehow weren't in Final Fantasy 14 yet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 14:25:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-xiii-2">Final Fantasy XIII-2</a></em> is 90 percent complete and we can expect a solid release date at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tgs-2011/">Tokyo Game Show 2011</a>, which runs September 15-18, <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/09/11/ffxiii_2_fan_event/">Andriasang</a> reports. <em>XIII-2</em> director Motomu Toriyama answered questions at a fan event in Tokyo and revealed some juicy, pre-TGS details -- <em>XIII </em>saves will receive some bonuses, <em>XIII-2</em> will have more than 150 monsters to raise, Chocobos will be rideable anywhere in the game and it includes a series-unique red Chocobo.<br />
<br />
<em>XIII-2</em> will be just a tad shorter than <em>XIII</em>, but with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/11/final-fantasy-xiii-2-has-time-travel-we-have-new-screenshots/">time travel</a>, that truly is a relative feature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/11/final-fantasy-xiii-2-is-90-percent-complete-more-pre-tgs-detail/">Final Fantasy XIII-2 is 90 percent complete, more pre-TGS details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 19:30:00 EST. <br />
While it may have missed the "<a href="http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150230251056301&amp;comments">July...twen..blah..blah..</a>" release window that was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/final-fantasy-tactics-ios-delayed-until-late-july-square-is-ver/">promised before</a>, Square Enix will finally bring menus and moogles to mobiles this Thursday. That's when the strategic wizards-on-a-grid simulator, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-tactics-the-war-of-the-lions">Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions</a>, </em>lands on Apple's iPhone.<br />
<br />
It's important to note that the game will only be compatible with iPhone 4s and <em>3GSeses</em>, and that iPad players will need to wait for the iPad-specific version, which <em>should</em> be launching around a month from Thursday. Historically, though, it's never been a good idea to count your chocobos before they've hatched.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/final-fantasy-tactics-the-war-of-the-lions-hits-iphone-this-thu/">Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions hits iPhone this Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 11:00:00 EST. Look, everyone should own a piece of apparel with a Chocobo on it, alright? That's just a scientific fact. We can't imagine doing better than <a href="http://riptapparel.com/shirt/11/10/2010/hold-your-chocobos">this entry</a> on democratic T-shirt retailer RIPT: Titled "Hold Your Chocobos," the shirt features the graphic above and, for today only, will cost you just $10.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/this-chocobo-shirt-is-something-we-would-like-to-own/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This Chocobo shirt is something we would like to own</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/this-chocobo-shirt-is-something-we-would-like-to-own/">This Chocobo shirt is something we would like to own</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 12:45:00 EST. Adding to the still <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/21/chocobos-crystal-tower-trademarked-in-europe/">mysterious</a> "Chocobo's Crystal Tower" trademark application, the <em>Final Fantasy</em> publisher recently filed to secure "Chocobo Panic." In addition, <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2010/05/13/square-enix-preparing-a-chocobo-panic/">Siliconera</a> notes that the "chocobopanic.com" domain is <a href="http://whois.domaintools.com/chocobopanic.com">registered</a> to none other than Square Enix president Yoichi Wada.<br />
<br />
<em>Chocobo Panic</em> sounds like a name for a downloadable puzzle game, but until we know for sure, it's more fun to imagine a game in which <em>Final Fantasy</em> characters become terrified to ride the giant birds after a series of Chocobo attacks. Players would choose either a Chocobo-scarred hero, who must figure out how to reach accord with the birds while also saving the world from an ancient evil (or something); or the brave leader of the Chocobo faction, who, in an RTS-like scenario, mobilizes his flightless charges while keeping morale up with yummy Gysahl Greens.<br />

While we don't know what kind of game it will be, or for which platforms, there is one fact we know for certain that has us eagerly awaiting whatever this is: the Chocobos from <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/square-enix-announces-new-chocobo-tales-chocobo-roguelike/">recent spin-off games</a> are super adorable. If <em>Chocobo's Crystal Tower</em> stars the bird from games like <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/ds-fanboy-review-final-fantasy-fables-chocobo-tales/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales</em></a>, then we look forward to sighing at some new cute screenshots.<br />
<br />
There's a <a href="http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Crystal_Tower">Crystal Tower</a> in <em>Final Fantasy III</em>. This is just speculation, but perhaps that venue could form the basis for another <em><a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/metareview-final-fantasy-fables-chocobos-dungeon/">Chocobo's Dungeon</a></em> game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/21/chocobos-crystal-tower-trademarked-in-europe/">'Chocobo's Crystal Tower' trademarked in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 10:30:00 EST. According to <a href="http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6333">unofficial sales numbers from Japan</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> has fallen down to number four on the sales list over there, after a very big <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/18/final-fantasy-xiii-launch-day-sales-exceed-1-million-in-japan/">million-plus release day</a> and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/24/final-fantasy-xiii-limit-breaks-japanese-ps3-software-sales-reco/">record-breaking first week</a>. But <em>otaku</em> take heart: even though sales of the game dropped over a million units in the second week, this wasn't unexpected. <br />
<em><br />
Final Fantasy</em> games always tend to take a dip after the "day one purchase" audience gets their copies. The last iteration of the series took a 1.5 million unit hit in week two. But even with the lower sales, about 200,000 copies were traded for the appropriate cost in yen, which indicates <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> is likely still on track to meet or exceed its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/square-enix-expects-final-fantasy-xiii-sales-to-exceed-6-million/">six million target worldwide</a>. That's <em>a lot</em> of chocobos.<br />

Last month -- utilizing the spamming power of Twitter -- Microsoft and Square Enix <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/twitter-users-unlock-final-fantasy-xiii-chocobo-avatar-item/">partnered</a> to offer Xbox Live users a free baby chocobo pet for their Avatars if they registered their Gamertags during the social media promotion. After weeks of waiting for the marketing plan to run its course, codes for the tiny companion have been sent to participating users via email. Sadly -- as <a href="http://twitter.com/majornelson/status/7222951181">Major Nelson points out</a> -- those who did not participate in the promotion cannot get the pet, but we anticipate the baby chocobo will find its way onto the Avatar Marketplace at some point.<br />
<br />
Reminiscent of the baby chocobo that nests within <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> hero Sazh Katzroy's gorgeous afro, our baby chocobo only seems to flutter around, refusing to nest within our own Avatar hairdos. We presume <em>that</em> feature will be some kind of pre-order bonus for <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> when it launches on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/13/final-fantasy-xiii-launches-march-9-2010-on-ps3-xbox-360/">March 9, 2010</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/31/your-chocobo-avatar-pet-is-in-the-mail/">Your chocobo Avatar pet is in the mail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 09:30:00 EST. In a feat considerably easier than breeding a golden chocobo in <em>Final Fantasy VII</em>, fans of Square Enix's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii">thirteenth Final outing</a> have unlocked a special Xbox Live Avatar item through the power of word of mouth (via keyboard). After garnering enough specially tagged messages on Twitter (some speculate that this may have represent some sort of "marketing tactic"), the folks at Microsoft have seen fit to entrust <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/splash/f/finalfantasyXIII/default.htm">an adorable virtual chocobo</a> to your Avatar. <br />
<br />
If you're in North America, UK, France or Germany and registered on the site, you can expect a download code via email by mid-December. If not, we've placed something after the break to cheer you up.<br />

On the one hand, that's probably good; these release-heavy weeks can be hard on the ol' pocketbook, and this is supposed to be a season of giving, not a season of going out and buying all the games <span style="font-style: italic;">you</span> want. With two chocobo-centric games heading to the DS, cash-poor gamers may have to make a terrible decision: <em>chocobo</em>, or <em>chocobo</em>? Oh, the horror! They're both adorable, but one is packed with mini-games based on familiar stories, and the other is based on familiar (as in, old school) gameplay packed with aspects that will kick your ass. How do you like your Chocobo: hanging with Cid, or, uh, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/square-enix-prepares-another-book-of-chocobo-tales/">hanging with Cid</a>? While we're clearly gonna need to choose hanging with Cid, we'll offer a caveat -- everything Chocobo has to be super cute. With that in mind, while we know you're probably more interested in <em>Chocobo's Dungeon DS+</em>, that trailer is tucked away behind the break, because the above video, for the <em>Chocobo Tales</em> sequel, is just adorable.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/double-the-chocobo-double-the-fun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Double the Chocobo, double the fun</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/double-the-chocobo-double-the-fun/">Double the Chocobo, double the fun</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 13:23:00 EST. That's one busy little bird.<br /><br />New details and screenshots are available at last on Chocobo's foray into the land of <em>Final Fantasy Fables</em>. <em>Chocobo to Mahou no Ehon: Majiyo to Otome to Gojin no Yuusha</em> (<em>Chocobo and the Magic Storybook: The Witch, The Maiden, and the Five Heroes</em>) follows the fat chocobo as he ventures, this time, into a story book drawn by Cid. Both of Square Enix's new Chocobo games <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/wark-two-chocobo-trailers-waddle-into-view/">focus heavily</a> on Cid, so we're not surprised to see the franchise staple putting pen to page in this game. Players will tackle more than 40 mini-games when the title is released in Japan this December.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/26/for-the-fans-of-final-fantasy-fables-chocobo-tales/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/square-enix-prepares-another-book-of-chocobo-tales/">Square Enix prepares another book of Chocobo Tales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. Square Enix has just announced that their adorable rogue-lite, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/relax-in-chocobos-dungeon-with-screens-and-videos/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a>, will launch in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/chocobo-telling-a-final-fantasy-fable-in-europe-this-fall/">PAL territories</a> on October 31. Quite an appropriate release date for a game about dressing up in various <em>Final Fantasy</em> job-related outfits! We also see the appropriateness in a Halloween release in a genre that you should be quite afraid of. It's kind of unfortunate that almost four months will have elapsed between the North American and PAL releases, but at least the release date is cool, right?<br /><br />Despite the cutesy exterior, <em>Chocobo's Dungeon</em> is still a for-real RPG, and, according to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/relax-in-chocobos-dungeon-with-screens-and-videos/">reviewers</a>, one worth checking out for its soundtrack as well as its challenge!<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/chocobo-dresses-up-for-halloween-in-europe/">Chocobo dresses up for Halloween in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 20:06:00 EST. The Japanese don't want one Chocobo themed game -- they want <em>two</em>. And that's exactly what they're getting this week on their PS Store update. Five new PS1 games are available for 600 yen each, and two of them are about Square Enix's notorious yellow mascots. Here they are:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Grille Logic</li>
    <li>Dice de Chocobo</li>
    <li>Chocobo Stallion</li>
    <li>Arkanoid Returns</li>
    <li>Yamasa Digi Selection</li>
</ul>

This week saw the long wait for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/chocobos-dungeon-producer-on-a-gentler-roguelike/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a></em> come <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/wii-releases-this-week-chocobos-dungeon-edition/">to an end</a>. Square Enix fans, Chocobo fans and dungeon crawling fans alike all have something new and fun to play. The critics <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/metareview-final-fantasy-fables-chocobos-dungeon/">seemed to like it</a>, is what we're saying. But, what about you all?<br /><br />Our weekend is pretty much going to be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/wrup-leading-the-revolution-edition/">full of <em>Civilization Revolution</em></a>, until next week arrives and we find ourselves <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">neck-deep in work</a>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/relax-in-chocobos-dungeon-with-screens-and-videos/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a> is warking on over to the Wii <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/wii-releases-this-week-chocobos-dungeon-edition/">today</a>, and this excites us for two reasons. For one, we're entirely ready for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/08/chocobos-mystery-dungeon-commercial-are-high-budgetedly-adorabl/">cuteness overload</a> that is sure to engulf us while playing the game. Seriously, dressing up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/square-enix-localizes-four-chocobo-games-for-immediate-release/">Chocobos</a> in cute little class outfits? We're not even sure we can handle that level of adorability. The second reason is that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/chocobos-dungeon-producer-on-a-gentler-roguelike/">it's a roguelike RPG</a>, and we can definitely use some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/shiren-3s-clockwork-bosses/">more</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/wii-fanboy-review-baroque/">representation</a> for this niche genre on the Wii.<br /><br />We don't want to play a <em>bad</em> game, though, so we're interested in seeing what the critics have to say before giving Square Enix our hard-earned $40. If you are, too, then look no further:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3168523&amp;p=44">1up</a> (<strong>B+</strong>) found many redeeming qualities about the game, as long as you're willing to embrace the roguelike challenges: "It's difficult, and it's often controller-throwingly infuriating, but the challenge is fundamentally fair -- and the game looks and sounds so good that you'll keep playing to see what comes next. The dungeons are surprisingly pretty for randomly generated affairs, boasting colorful corridors and flashy graphical effects. And the soundtrack is nothing short of amazing, a collection of lush rearrangements of <em>Final Fantasy</em> standbys."<br /><br /><a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/885/885311p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>84/100</strong>) thought that this title had a lot of polish, and that Squeenix fans should run to pick this one up: "On the surface, <span style="font-style: italic;">Chocobo's Dungeon</span> appears to be another watered-down entry with its kid-friendly presentation and seemingly simplistic gameplay. But spend a little time with it and layers of depth slowly reveal themselves. This is one of the most engaging, challenging experiences on the Wii, proving that a kiddie presentation doesn't have to mean shallow gameplay."<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/metareview-final-fantasy-fables-chocobos-dungeon/">Metareview: Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br />As a promotion for its <em>Virtual World</em> -- yes, it's a virtual world titled <em>Virtual World</em> -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square Enix</a> held a special event in the beta 3D space unveiling two new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Chocobo/">Chocobo</a> titles for the Nintendo DS -- <em>Cid and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: Maze of Time DS+</em> (fall 2008) and <em>Chocobo and the Magic Storybook: The Witch and the Girl and the Five Heroes</em> (winter 2008). <br /><br /><em>Cid and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: Maze of Time DS+</em>, as you can guess, will be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/roguelike/">roguelike</a> starring Final Fantasy figures Cid and Chocobo. This will actually be Square Enix's fourth <em>Chocobo Mystery Dungeon</em> entry, an enhanced port of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/chocobos-dungeon">Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</a></em> for the Wii, now with new jobs and a storyline told from a new perspective (Cid's).<br /><br />The chances of this one coming to the U.S.? Given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/izuna">current</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon-mystery-dungeon">"surge"</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shiren-the-wanderer">roguelikes</a> hitting the States, it's very likely we'll get this one! You can preview some of <em>Cid and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon's</em> first screenshots in our gallery below.<br /><br />The second title, <em>Chocobo and the Magic Storybook: The Witch and the Girl and the Five Heroes</em>, follows 2007's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/chocobotales">Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales</a></em>, a minigame collection with RPG and card-battling elements. If you remember <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/ds-fanboy-review-final-fantasy-fables-chocobo-tales/">our favorable review for the original game</a>, we called it "just about the cutest thing <em>ever</em>." In an IGN interview, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/chocobos-dungeon-warks-to-north-america-in-july/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a> producer Yuki Yokoyama described the game as a toned-down roguelike, made in such a way that "users who have never played a dungeon crawler can enjoy it as well." Item and experience loss after death, then, is gone to make the experience friendlier. Good for new players, but roguelike devotees may be put off!<br /><br />Square Enix was motivated to return to the <em>Chocobo's Dungeon</em> RPG series, Yokoyama said, after the last <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/ds-fanboy-review-final-fantasy-fables-chocobo-tales/"><em>Chocobo </em>game</a> on the DS. In Japan, the <em>Chocobo Tales</em> minigame collection was apparently popular, leading Yokoyama to believe it was a good time to make another game in the <em>Chocobo's Dungeon</em> series.<br /><br />While you're reading about the cutest dungeon RPG this year, be sure to check out IGN's new <a href="http://media.wii.ign.com/media/905/905519/imgs_1.html">screens</a> as well.<br /><br />
<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/chocobos-dungeon-producer-on-a-gentler-roguelike/">Chocobo's Dungeon producer on a gentler roguelike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 18:00:00 EST. The company has just announced that their roguelike-ish <em>Final Fantasy </em>spinoff game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/06/chocobos-dungeon-is-cute-cuddly-mildly-dangerous/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a>, will be released "across Europe and PAL territories" in the fall of this year. <br /><br />The game, a turn-based dungeon RPG about a cuddly Chocobo's adventures in random dungeons created from villagers' lost memories, came out in Japan in December. It is being released in North America on July 8. <br /><br />Along with the new announcement, Square Enix has released new screens, which can be found in our gallery. And in addition to the totally sweet video above, two more videos of Chocobo in action -- as a black mage and dragoon -- are available after the break.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/chocobo-telling-a-final-fantasy-fable-in-europe-this-fall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chocobo telling a Final Fantasy Fable in Europe this fall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/chocobo-telling-a-final-fantasy-fable-in-europe-this-fall/">Chocobo telling a Final Fantasy Fable in Europe this fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST. Surprise! <em>Four</em> brand new Chocobo games are available for your enjoyment <em>right now -- </em>exclusively to registrants at the Square Enix Members website. They are, of course, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/square-enix-mini-game-service/">four adorable web games</a> released in May of last year to promote the Japanese release of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/chocobos-dungeon-website-reminds-us-that-the-game-exists/">Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</a>.</em><br /><br />Now you can <em>read the instructions</em> and understand the nuanced control schemes involved in keeping Jail Bird on top of a stick so he can catch apples in <em>Chocobo's Balancing Act</em>, deftly avoid ice in <em>Chocobo's Snowboard Glide,</em> fly on borrowed wings in <em>Chocobo Flight,</em> and goof off in class in <em>Chocobo's Classmate. </em>Not that you couldn't have figured out how to play those.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/square-enix-localizes-four-chocobo-games-for-immediate-release/">Square Enix localizes four Chocobo games for immediate release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. <div align="left">There seems to be an inordinately low level of hype surrounding the July release of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/chocobos-dungeon-warks-to-north-america-in-july/">Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</a>.</em> It's an original <em>Final Fantasy </em>RPG (of sorts) on the Wii! That's awesome, right? Roguelikes, as well, are relatively hot right now, so we think this is a noteworthy release.<br /><br />The website has been updated with a short story introduction, descriptions of three of Chocobo's available jobs (Knight, White Mage, and Black Mage), and even gameplay information, which describes areas in the game's town and the weird "Romantic Phrases" sidequest. In this quest, you find hidden "Romantic Phrases" in letters and recite them to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/08/a-mysterious-hero-emerges-from-the-dungeon/">Romantic Hero X</a>. <br /><br />There are also two wallpapers, one of which was the source for the lovely art adorning this post. We've stared at it long enough that we're now convinced we like the game.<br /><br /><br /></div>

Be sure to check your teeth for cavities after this post, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SquareEnix/">Square Enix</a> will bring an extra dose of saccharine sweetness to the Wii this summer by way of <em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em>. The game, designed for both RPG enthusiasts and fans who spend their nights imagining dressing up the company's iconic yellow birds, will ship on July 8, and its asking price of just $39.99 won't leave your wallet looking for a phoenix down.<br /><br />According to Squeenix, this overdose of cute will find <em>Final Fantasy</em> stalwarts Cid and Chocobo hunting for treasure while trying to solve the mystery of a strange town full of people who have lost their memories. The game will even take the cute online via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nintendo+Wi-Fi+Connection/">Wi-Fi</a> card battles featuring a darling "3D pop-up book style." <em>Kweh</em>!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/03/31/chocobos-dungeon-warks-to-north-america-in-july/">Nintendo Wii Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/chocobos-dungeon-kweh-ming-to-north-america-in-july/">Chocobo's Dungeon kweh-ming to North America in July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. If you were wondering where you'd get your cuteness fix this summer, wonder no more. Square-Enix just announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/in-case-youve-forgotten-anything-chocobos-dungeon-preview/"><em>Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a> would be hitting North American Wiis on July 8th of this year, confirming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/rumor-chocobos-dungeon-to-be-open-to-american-adventurers/">earlier rumors</a> that were floating around the internets.<br /><br />This game is mostly for the Squeenix fans who squeal at the thought of a Chocobo wearing various class outfits, but those of you who enjoy dungeon-crawling RPGs might consider it, too -- especially at the $39.99 price tag. The story revolves around Chocobo and Cid, who find themselves in a town where people have lost their memories. The only way to retrieve the memories of the townsfolk, of course, is to battle through dungeons. The game also offers Wi-Fi card battles against friends and arcade-style minigames that can be found at the Mog House.<br /><br />The Wii can certainly use some more RPGs, in our opinion, and this is definitely a welcome one. Should this title interest you, you can also check out its official English website <a href="http://www.trafficresults.com/click-rabbit.php?acctid=SnvE3WhxRDs=&amp;docid=CLM03431032008-1&amp;redirect=1&amp;url=http://na.square-enix.com/fffcd">here</a> (although there's nothing there, yet).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/chocobos-dungeon-warks-to-north-america-in-july/">Chocobo's Dungeon warks to North America in July</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. We hear they're okay for sending games to people, which is great. But more importantly, they <em>love</em> to reveal unannounced games to us. Case in point: their "Coming Soon" page includes a listing for <em>Final Fantasy: Chocobo Dungeon</em>. We've long suspected that Square Enix would decide to localize their adorable roguelike, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/in-case-youve-forgotten-anything-chocobos-dungeon-preview/">Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon: Toki-Wasure no Meikyuu</a>.</em> There's really no reason <em>not</em> to believe Gamefly on this one. It's currently marked for a July 3rd release date on the website.<br /><br />Also found on the "Coming Soon" page: oddities! Like <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Chimps">Space Chimps</a>!</em> Well, that's not really that odd, since there's a CG movie coming out by the same name. Anything called <em>Space Chimps</em> qualifies as odd by default, though, we think. But much more unequivocally odd is <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail.asp?pid=130910&amp;t=0&amp;fcTrack=Search?-?-"><em>Guinness Book of World Records</em></a> ... the game! Look forward to that this October, according to Gamefly.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/rumor-chocobos-dungeon-to-be-open-to-american-adventurers/">Rumor: Chocobo's Dungeon to be open to American adventurers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 10:30:00 EST. It does a good job of introducing the basics of the turn-based system, the methods of upgrading your character, and, of course, the storyline.<br /><br />We were amused by the major fakeout involved in the story: Chocobo and a treasure hunter named Cid head to <span style="font-style: italic;">a big tower</span>, which we <span style="font-style: italic;">think</span> is going to be the basis for the game, like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/25/vc-tuesday-the-terror-of-druaga/"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Tower of Druaga</span></a> or something. They've got this perfectly serviceable roguelike setting, a tower made up of many floors, full of treasure, and then -- nope! The tower gets hit with some kind of beam that sends Chocobo and Cid into a vortex, landing them in the Land of Forgotten Time. Okay, we thought, so they'll explore this land, then, like <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/shiren-3-packed-with-online-features/">Shiren the Wanderer</a>.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Then</span> a space-baby shows up and lets Chocobo go into people's minds to recover their memories.<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>And <span style="font-style: italic;">those</span> are the dungeons.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/in-case-youve-forgotten-anything-chocobos-dungeon-preview/">In case you've forgotten anything: Chocobo's Dungeon preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 14:15:00 EST. This glimpse of the opening for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/chocobos-dungeon-screens-are-disgustingly-cute/"><em>Chocobo's Dungeon: Toki-Wasure no Meikyuu</em></a> makes us long for the game to retain the Japanese voice acting come the inevitable English-language release. It just looks and sounds so good! Of course, we'll probably love it as much in English, but it's hard to argue with this video, which is why we've decided to drop it into our weekly spotlight.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/friday-video-enter-the-chocobo/">Friday Video: Enter the Chocobo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. How to subtly work in gaming influences on the spawnling without pushing a love for things like sprites, whips, and black mages <em>too</em> hard? Trust Square Enix to find a way to make that a little bit easier with this <a href="http://mgrsti3030s.seamlesstech.biz/templates/frmTemplateR.asp?CatalogID=14764&amp;SearchYN=N&amp;subFolderID=165">completely adorable rubber ducky</a> that is not, in fact, a duck at all -- but rather, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/ds-fanboy-review-final-fantasy-fables-chocobo-tales/">chocobo</a>. Not just any old chocobo, either, but a fat little baby chocobo that is just perfect for fat little baby hands. <br /><br />The chocobos, which release in April, are a little costly for a bath toy at $13.50 apiece, but it may be worth the premium to snag the perfect tub companion. You can bet there's going to be one in <em>this</em> house.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/rubber-chocobo-youre-the-one/">Rubber chocobo, you're the one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 22:30:00 EST. Only one game in the top ten (and top fifteen, for that matter) was for a non-Nintendo system, which exemplifies the company's current dominance in Japan. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/chocobo/"><em>Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon</em></a> is mysteriously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-from-12-10-12/">missing from the charts</a>, however, leading some to speculate that the game sold less than FIFA 360 (which took the last place with 2,400 copies sold).<br /><br />Check after the break to see the sales numbers for Japan's hardware and software.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/26/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-12-17-12-23/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 12/17-12/23</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/26/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-12-17-12-23/">Another week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 12/17-12/23</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Dec 2007 15:00:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/promotionalconsideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> has been pushing <span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy IV</span> hard this week in Japan, advertising the 3D remake with five different <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/final-fantasy-iv-ads-remind-us-cg-is-great/">CG-filled commercials</a>. We were curious to compare these spots with how the RPG was marketed when it first appeared on the Super Famicom, all the way back in 1991, and the two approaches couldn't be any more at odds!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/promotional-consideration-hataraku-chocobo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Hataraku Chocobo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/promotional-consideration-hataraku-chocobo/">Promotional Consideration: Hataraku Chocobo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Dec 2007 20:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Square Enix has updated their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/chocobos-trailer-of-mystery/"><em>Chocobo's Dungeon: Toki-Wasure no Meikyuu</em></a> homepage with two versions of a really cute commercial. We know it's Square Enix and everything, but we're still a bit taken aback by the high production values on display in this ad (accessible from the homepage via the "movie" link). It's a Wii sequel to a spinoff series that <em>we</em> thought was a low-budget, low-key affair. The FMVs are actually <em>really</em> nice!<br /><br />But mostly we just wanted to post about the commercials so we could post this picture. We totally cheated by snapping the screenshot mid-blink, but we think the resemblance is uncanny.<br /></div>

Maybe it's the soothing music that feels like it should be playing during the credits of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hoxixQ2Jg0"><em>Battle Royale</em></a> or something (don't ask us how we came up with that association, they really don't sound that alike). Maybe it's the young green-haired boy, who reminds us of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwoUcYKUanM">Cabbage Head</a> (oh, how we miss you Kids in the Hall). Perhaps the only thing cuter than a chocobo plush is a chocobo plus with a mage outfit. Just look at him in his little hat! We want this so badly. If only we could justify spending $25 ($30 with shipping) on a plush. But hey, some of you might be more spendthrifty than us, so <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-49-en-15-chocobo+plush.html">buy away</a>!<br /><br />Also, if you like these sorts of things, check out the Santa Claus and white mage chocobos after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/chocobo-plushes-wark-with-the-best-of-them/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chocobo plushes wark with the best of them</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/chocobo-plushes-wark-with-the-best-of-them/">Chocobo plushes wark with the best of them</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 22:34:00 EST. Well, maybe not the <em>whole </em>mystery, but we're definitely getting a more clear picture of what this game is all about.<br /><br />And, as far as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/08/a-mysterious-hero-emerges-from-the-dungeon/">mysterious dungeons</a> go, we can think of nothing more than a giant, delicious and cute bird who should traverse them. Especially one that is so multi-talented. And, if you were looking for some new screens for the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/chocobos-mysterious-trailer/"><em>Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon</em></a>, then JeuxFrance has enough screens that, should you wish, you could print each one out and sew them together, making yourself a nice little blanket. <br /><br />Of course, we can't condone such a thing. We'd hate to see you get a nasty papercut.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/the-mystery-becomes-unraveled-in-these-screens/">The mystery becomes unraveled in these screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 21:00:00 EST. <div align="left">In the showdown of Wii <em>Mysterious Dungeon</em> games, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/25/chocobos-trailer/"><em>Chocobo's Dungeon</em></a> has one major advantage over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/21/tgs07-mysterious-trailer-shiren-the-wanderer-3/"><em>Shiren the Wanderer 3</em></a>: the <em>awwwwww </em>factor. The adorableness of the Chocobo protagonist and pretty much everything else in the game may help sway roguelike fans who are on the fence about which title to buy.<br /><br />As if the game didn't already overload on the cute, these new screenshots reveal a new character named Dungeon Hero X. Where did he come from? Is he friend, enemy, or both? No one knows (although we doubt he's firing the "Mog Beam" at the poor Chocobo out of friendship). It is a mystery of the Mystery Dungeon.
