New Club Nintendo awards include Art Style: Pictobits, Urban Champion

If you can't wait to spend some of those coins, Nintendo is offering new rewards for its Club Nintendo program. Four new downloadable games have been made available for May, including a pair of 3DS titles and two WiiWare games.

Art Style: Pictobits is the frontrunner for our hard-earned coins, a delightful DSiWare puzzle game ported to the 3DS. Pictobits debuted next to Majora's Mask, so you may not remember it. The other high-profile game is a 3DS port of Urban Champion, the first fighting game to appear on the NES and quite possibly the worst game to appear on the NES.

The two WiiWare games are Snowpack Park and Eco Shooter: Plant 3D. All four games will be available for download until May 31.

If you've got a bunch of Club Nintendo Coins burning a hole in your virtual pocket, you could do worse than spend them on this month's selection of downloadable games. For April, Nintendo is offering Kenji Eno's WiiWare puzzle game You, Me, and the Cubes; the WiiWare bike retread Excitebike World Rally, and a 3DS-only download of DSiWare shmup Metal Torrent (all right, they can't all be winners).

As always, these games are also available through your console's online store for regular money, but you have the extra option of trading your fake Club Nintendo currency this month.

Trade Club Nintendo Coins for Cubello or Game Boy Virtual Console games this month

With the beginning of a new month comes a new selection of downloadable Club Nintendo rewards. This month, you can trade your hard-earned Club Nintendo Coins (earned by registering purchased games) for Art Style: Cubello on WiiWare, or the Game Boy games Mario's Picross and Radar Mission on 3DS eShop. They cost 100 Coins each.

As with previous monthly selections, these are all games that you can buy through the Wii Shop or 3DS eShop with real money. You simply have the additional temporary option of using your Club Nintendo stash.

Club Nintendo card case is worth the fake money

Nintendo's never sent me a Club Nintendo bonus for review before, and I thought it was kind of odd when one arrived. But I don't think there's ever been a Club Nintendo bonus this nice. The 3DS Game Card Case is both beautiful and genuinely useful, holding 18 DS or 3DS games in a case the size of a single DS game box. That's a rarity among DS game cases.

The transparent case comes with four reversible covers, for a surprisingly versatile look. I grabbed some random DS and 3DS cartridges from my desk, stored them in the case, and took some pictures so you can see for yourself.

Club Nintendo swaps downloadable games, adds Mario Party 2, Art Academy

With a new month comes a new selection of downloadable games for which you can exchange your Club Nintendo Coins. The new lineup is half as varied as those of previous months, offering only one DSiWare download and one Wii Virtual Console game.

For 150 Coins each, you can choose Art Academy: First Semester for DSiWare (but only available on 3DS through this offer) or Mario Party 2 for Wii. If you get that one, use the money you saved by buying it with Club Nintendo money to buy some extra controllers, either for friends or to replace the ones ruined by Mario Party.

For fans of physical, tangible goods, there's also this new 3DS card case. It holds 18 games and includes four "double-sided card covers." And it looks really nice.

If your home is already full to bursting with Mario paraphernalia, you'll be delighted to learn that you can exchange your Club Nintendo Coins for downloadable games. Nintendo is featuring a rotating selection of WiiWare, Virtual Console, DSiWare, and eShop downloads offered on the North American Club Nintendo site.

Through January 10, your choices include Super Mario Kart (100 Coins), 3D Classics: Xevious (100 Coins), Fluidity (150 Coins), and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (150 Coins). In a way, this is really cheap as it trades illusory fun money for games -- but in another way, it's outrageously expensive as said fun money is only acquired through the for-real purchase of multiple games.

Those of you with more space for swag have new reward options as well: three different, adorable Mario notebooks, and a Zelda poster set.

Club Nintendo 'Dot Mario Cushion' is another reason to envy Japan

We get it. Everybody deserves to come home from a long day at the office and embrace a loved one, whether it be an actual human being, a pet or just a really awesome pillow. In this case, it's all pillow. Get it? Get it?!

Ahem, sorry -- Nintendo's latest Club Nintendo Platinum goodie for Japan (yeah, we're upset, too) has us all aflutter with excitement. It's the very awesome Mario pillow you see above, available as one of three different freebies for Platinum members. The other two freebies up for grabs are two table calendars or two different soundtracks, from a total of five, though we know eligible members would never go against the pillow. Because that'd just be insane.

Your 3DS Mii is pathetically teensy now, suitable for posing next to hamsters and soda cans. But you could make your virtual self much more (virtually) substantial with the giant AR Card, available now from North America's Club Nintendo for 200 Coins. The 28.5" tall card has the question-mark block on one side, and Mario on the other, allowing it to be used for AR Mario images as well.

Two other prizes were added to the lineup today: for ten coins, you can get a Metroid: Other M screensaver -- released almost a year after the game ... or for 400 Coins, there's a set of three Donkey Kong posters, in the same style as previous Mario and Zelda posters.

Club Nintendo 'Platinum' members to receive commemorative pin set

Yesterday marked the end of the "year," as far as North America's Club Nintendo Elite Status goes. Did you earn 600 "Coins" by registering first-party Wii, DS, and 3DS games and taking surveys between the end of June last year and yesterday? If so, you're entitled to this year's gift for Platinum status holders, a set of commemorative pins.

The 25 Super Mario Bros. sprite pins come in six boxes that can be arranged to form a picture of Mario, a mushroom, or a Goomba.

If you hit the 300-Coin mark in that period, you're entitled to the "Gold" gift, which, as always, is a desk calendar with a different Nintendo game theme for each month. We just switched over to the Nintendogs + Cats page in our 2011 calendar this morning! Awwww.

Club Nintendo Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack offer extended [Update]

We received a lot of emails yesterday from anxious readers, who had all registered their copies of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D with Club Nintendo for their free soundtrack discs (as announced in the E3 keynote), but weren't getting the email confirmations from Nintendo. And then the site crashed. As this was a first-come-first-serve offer, the lack of communication was disturbing. Readers reported yesterday that only a call to Nintendo customer service (on a Sunday!) would resolve the issue.

Today, Nintendo updated the page for the offer, extending the cutoff to "midnight, Pacific Time on Monday June 20, 2011" -- we're contacting Nintendo to clarify if that meant last night or tonight. We tested the deal and have yet to receive email confirmation ourselves, but Nintendo's page says, "You will receive an email confirmation within 7 days to confirming we have placed your order." It also says that everyone who registered before midnight Pacific on June 20 will receive a CD.

Update: Nintendo informed us that the deal is in fact active until midnight, Pacific time, tonight. There's still time!

First 3000 European 3DS registrants become walking AR Cards

"Hey, there's something on your shirt." "Oh, let me brush it off -- did I get it?" "No, it's still there. It's, like ... a fishing game?"

The first 3,000 Europe residents to register their new 3DS systems with Club Nintendo this Friday will receive a t-shirt with a picture of the question-mark AR Card on it, allowing them to augment the realities of their own bodies with archery, fishing, and other AR Games. Yes, it sounds funny, but it also means the person wearing the shirt has to hold still and watch someone else (the person with the 3DS cameras pointed at the shirt) have an awesome time.

Registering a 3DS in Europe will also get you 750 Stars, which puts you well on the way to that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sticker set you've been eyeing.

Game & Watch: Ball now available as Club Nintendo reward

Do you possess enough Club Nintendo coins to purchase a small, uninhabited tropical island? Why not spend your fake currency on this, instead: The promotional program's latest reward is a reproduction of Game and Watch: Ball, in which you play a juggler who's tasked with keeping a number of always hastening circles suspended in the air. We guess the plural nature of your profession's materials would make the title Balls more appropriate, but ... no. No, we won't be doing that.

The game (and Watch) will run you 1,200 coins. Also added to the list of rewards is a reversible carrying bag for whatever model of DS you're currently toting around, which costs 250 coins. We guess you could put other things in there, too. Like Game and Watch: Ball! That, ladies and gentlemen, is called synergy.

Club Nintendo updates with Kirby patches, Mario wrist straps

Club Nintendo has a few new bonuses available in its shop, just in case you happen to have a sudden influx of new Nintendo games, and therefore Club Nintendo Coins, in the next couple of weeks.

For 350 Coins, you can get one of two sets of adorable adhesive Kirby's Epic Yarn patches, featuring either Saucer and Off-Roader Kirby, or regular-style Kirby and Prince Fluff. Or, for 450 Coins, you can get a set of four New Super Mario Bros. Wii-themed Wii Remote straps, each one representing one of the four playable characters.

In other Club Nintendo news, the fans, messenger bags and tote bags are back in stock. Hurry!

Club Nintendo offers Dragon Quest IX screensaver, Mario towels

Club Nintendo has introduced two more choices for your fun-money shopping. Another 10-Coin screensaver is available, this time featuring Dragon Quest IX artwork against a backdrop of the world map. If you're less prone to screen burn-in and more prone to spill your drink, you may be more interested in the other new item: the set of three Mario towels originally released in Japan last July.

Of course, given that each towel goes for 350 Coins, you'd probably be better off reaching for the paper towels, instead of ordering one of these and then waiting several weeks for it to arrive. We don't want to imagine the horror of actually cleaning with one of these. They're too ... collectible!

New Club Nintendo rewards will hold your old Club Nintendo rewards

Nintendo has added three lovely new items to the North American Club Nintendo catalog. The "cheapest" of the trio is a Super Mario Galaxy 2 screensaver for ten coins. It's the second Club Nintendo screensaver to be released -- a Mario 25th anniversary version is also available for the same price.

Moving up, for 250 Coins, you can score a canvas tote bag with colorful polka dots and a Super Mushroom silkscreen. And for 550 Coins, there's the black messenger bag, featuring a Super Star design.

Based on the options, we suspect a lot of people are going to show up at E3 with the same messenger bag next year. That'll be embarrassing.

Club Nintendo celebrates Super Mario Bros.' 25th anniversary -- with pins

Sure, we may not have the special Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary Wii or DSi XL, or the Super Mario All-Stars re-release, but Europe and Japan don't have these pins -- or this screensaver.

The newest items in the Club Nintendo shop are these four commemorative Mario pins, each shipping in early November for a steep 450 Coins -- which means you can go ahead and forget about collecting them all. On the other end of the price scale is a new Mario screensaver, featuring footage from games throughout the series, which you can download for 10 Coins. Compared to the pins, it's a bargain! But it's also a screensaver.

Nintendo just sent us a note alerting us to a new way to spend Club Nintendo coins: the sensu (Japanese paper fans) released in Japan this April. They'll be available on the North American Club Nintendo site tomorrow, October 7, in four designs: Mario, Animal Crossing fireworks, Animal Crossing faces, or Blooper. Just in time for ... the scorching fall heat?

Each fan will cost 300 coins, equivalent to one of those silly Wii Remote stands. Sorry to tempt you during your ongoing quest to collect enough points for the Game & Watch Collection 2.

When you see the stuff Japan's Club Nintendo offers its members, you may be prone to drool a bit. Ironically, Nintendo of Japan's loyalty program has something for that now as well.

For 150 points, Club Nintendo is offering the choice of one of these three 25cm x 25cm "towel handkerchiefs." They're part towel and part handkerchief, but at the same time neither, because none of us would dare dry or clean anything with one of these. Since they're currently only available in Japan, of course, we don't even have the opportunity to decline to mop up a spilled soda with one of these cute collectibles.

Club Nintendo Gold and Platinum awards announced

Here's what you've been buying Nintendo games all year for! Well, hopefully you've been buying Nintendo games because you want to play them, but here's the secondary reason: Nintendo announced the Platinum and Gold Elite Status Gifts for North America's Club Nintendo.

Those who reached Gold status (300 coins or more since last July) get a calendar, and Platinum status holders (600 coins or more) get this neat Mario figurine thing. To claim your reward, you have to sign into Club Nintendo and provide a shipping address. The prizes will ship by the end of this year, according to Nintendo.

And now ... the process begins again. It's time to start registering games for next year, like that copy of Sin & Punishment you were just about to buy.

See the Super Mario Galaxy 2 orchestra live (on video)

For Super Mario Galaxy 2's soundtrack, Nintendo went all-out, recording the main theme with a 70-person orchestra. Footage of the assembled musicians playing the sweeping opening music has been released via the Japanese Nintendo Channel (watch it after the break), allowing us to see just how much more epic a piece of music is when you see it played by a room full of people. If you're wondering why Shigeru Miyamoto looks so bored, it's because there was no room in the orchestra for his banjo.

Fans of Galaxy 2's music will be crushed to learn that Japan's Club Nintendo is offering a two-disc soundtrack for just 300 points with the registration of a copy of the game. It's possible for this bonus to make its way to other regions' Club Nintendos, as the first Galaxy soundtrack did in Europe, but we'd rather take such anomalies as delightful surprises, rather than disappoint ourselves by expecting them.

Nintendo of Japan has unveiled the latest prizes to tempt people out of their Club Nintendo coins: a series of Japanese folding fans in Mario and Animal Crossing motifs. For 150 coins each, the service has four surprisingly cool-looking fans: one featuring Mario on a monochrome background, one with Bloobers on blue, an Animal Crossing fireworks scene, and another Animal Crossing image with a pink color scheme. These will be available through June 30. Nintendo also put the Mario poster set on the Japanese site.

We used to see things like these and lament the fact that they'd never be available outside of Japan. But North America's Club Nintendo actually brings over a lot of stuff from the Japanese club now!

Nintendo has added the next round of rewards to its North American Club Nintendo store, for those of you eager to burn off your fake money. The WiiWare game Grill-Off with Ultra Hand is now available for real, priced at just 80 Coins. If you prefer to spend way more Coins, the second volume of Nintendo's Game & Watch Collection for DS is now available -- for 800 Coins, 200 more than the price of the original.

Finally, a set of three Mario posters has been added to the shop for 350 Coins. They're okay ... for something that isn't a free video game.

'Grill Off with Ultra Hand' available today through Club Nintendo [update]

Finally! We now have a use for a handful of the Club Nintendo coins we've been hoarding. Nintendo has announced that Grill Off with Ultra Hand, the WiiWare game in which you cook meat with an extending hand toy, is available through North America's Club Nintendo for 80 coins -- and we just can't resist the intoxicating cocktail of toy nostalgia and virtual grilled meats.

The reward has yet to show up in the Club Nintendo catalog, but we expect to see it soon. See a trailer for Grill Off here.

New Club Nintendo goodies: Ultrahand, Game and Watch Collection 2

The best part of buying Nintendo games is ~~playing the actual Nintendo games you just bought~~ collecting coins for Club Nintendo! At yesterday's Nintendo Media Summit, the publisher announced two new items: the DS Game and Watch Collection 2 and Grill-Off with Ultrahand for Wii.

Game and Watch Collection 2 is a cartridge with classic and updated versions of Parachute and Octopus, released to Japan's Club Nintendo in 2008. Ultrahand is a WiiWare game about using a classic Nintendo toy to grill meat (really), released for just 50 points in Japan late last year. No information about release dates or cost have been released here yet.

Club Nintendo offers new, organizational rewards

Nintendo has announced some new Club Nintendo rewards for patrons to spend their hard-earned points on. Don't get too excited!

The rewards are folders and greeting cards. For 300 points each, you can get a set of either Nintendogs or Mario greeting cards; and for 250 points each, there are folder sets of "Mario & Friends," "Toad & Friends," and "Bowser" (each containing three folders and some bookmarks).

These office items might be extra useful for those of you still in school -- or those of you whose jobs don't already tell everyone you know what a huge Nintendo nerd you are. We like them because all the Mario items use hand-drawn Mario art instead of the 3D models Nintendo typically uses.

Club Nintendo Japan sending Game & Watches as Platinum gifts

The Game & Watch Collection is a popular catalog item for Club Nintendo, but this year's gift for Japanese gamers who reach Platinum status takes the Game & Watch nostalgia even further. It's a real Game & Watch.

Nintendo is producing a new run of the classic handheld Ball, specifically to give away to Club Nintendo members who accrued 400 points or more in the last year. It's a replica of the original, with a Club Nintendo logo added. Like the other Platinum awards, this doesn't cost any points (so Platinum members can still buy Wii de Ultrahand), and will be sent out to everyone who qualifies.

As usual, gold members get a calendar.

Nintendo extends Ultra Hand to Japanese Club Nintendo members

We're enjoying our DS game cases , and our other DS game cases, and all, but we can't help but be a bit jealous at the latest gift available for Japanese Club Nintendo users. Wii de Ultra Hand is an exclusive Wii game based on the classic extendable grabbing toy -- specifically, Nintendo's own version, designed by Gunpei Yokoi and released in 1967.

The game uses the Wiimote and Nunchuk to simulate the handles of the Ultra Hand, and tasks players with picking up meat from grills and depositing it on plates. It's available today for just 50 Club Nintendo points, one third the cost of a Wiimote stand.

2009 Club Nintendo rewards have arrived!

Several Joysitq staffers were pleased to discover that the 2009 Club Nintendo rewards have begun to arrive today. For those that need a reminder of what the gifts are, Platinum members got to choose between a real life Mario hat or a download of Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, a special version of Punch-Out!! featuring Little Mac's trainer, Doc Louis. Meanwhile, Gold members were limited to one gift, a 2010 Nintendo calendar. Check out the gallery below for images of all the different gifts.

Club Nintendo members to get 'exclusive artwork' this month

Some Nintendo fans are disappointed in America's Club Nintendo initiative. In spite of giving away free swag the company is completely not required to do, many found this year's Elite bonuses (a hat and calendar) a bit lackluster. Perhaps a new bonus, "exclusive" to Club Nintendo members will cheer the naysayers.

Nintendo's Denise Kaigler teased IGN readers with this cryptic message: "Keep your eyes on the Club Nintendo Web site in September. That's when we will offer members some exclusive Nintendo artwork." To make the offer even more enticing, she emphasizes how super-secret it is. "For the reason I mentioned earlier, I can't say any more than that right now - it's a secret to everybody."

Perhaps Club Nintendo members will be able to get a super-exclusive sneak peak at the next Zelda game? Probably not -- but your theories are certainly welcome!

Downloadable Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games get physical Club Nintendo items

A few lucky Japanese WiiWare shoppers who pick up the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games next week will get limited-edition gifts from Club Nintendo. Fifty people who buy at least two of the three WiiWare roguelikes will get this pop-up book thing, which is, honestly, not that exciting of a pop-up. It's basically a paper dome. Two hundred people who purchase just one of the games will randomly be drawn to win a Wiimote/DS strap featuring artwork from the game they purchased.

Meanwhile, Nintendo of America has indicated no plans to release the games, and it won't indicate any such plans until they magically appear on the Wii Shop. Don't expect any promotions like this, or, really, any promotion at all.

Club Nintendo Japan updates with flying Kirby and more

Nintendo of Japan just updated its Club Nintendo rewards shop with a bunch of new exclusive items that will no doubt have you crying into your canvas Wiimote storage box. The most eye-catching new item is the 350-Coin Kirby flying disc, which looks just like a flat Kirby made out of nylon.

Other new items include Zelda posters, a Mario & Luigi 3 soundtrack (which is discounted for those who purchased the game), pencil cases, and a very cute set of Animal Crossing magnet clips. We can't help but think that no matter how sad we are over our inability to obtain the Kirby frisbee, we're going to weep openly when Japan's Platinum and Gold rewards are unveiled.

Nintendo reveals American Club Nintendo bonuses [update]

Nintendo loyalists that have been diligently registering their games can now pick up a reward through the Club Nintendo loyalty program. Those who have earned 300 or more Coins (equivalent to 6 Wii game purchases) are granted Gold status, while those who have earned 600 or more Coins are granted Platinum status. These members are now entitled to an exclusive members-only bonus.

Platinum members have the choice of two prizes:

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! -- this downloadable WiiWare game is available exclusively to Club Nintendo Platinum members. In this special download, you'll be able to fight one-on-one against your coach, Doc Louis. Update: Screenshots now added.
Mario Hat -- a "true-to-life" replica of Mario's signature headpiece. Nintendo notes that the hat "may be big for small children."

Gold members will receive a special 2010 calendar. See more images after the break.

Game & Watch & DSiWare

If you've been having a tough time accruing enough coins in Club Nintendo to get your very own copy of Game & Watch Collection for DS, know that Nintendo is planning to parcel out nine different Game & Watch classics to DSiWare in Japan. Kotaku reports that Nintendo will be offering each individual game for a very reasonable 200 DSi Points over the summer, meaning you can have your own piece of gaming history on the go for a measly $2.

There's no word on these escaping Japan, but considering that a majority of the content offered on DSiWare there has made its way over here, it's likely only a matter of time.

PSA: Register your games for Club Nintendo elite status today

This is, necessarily, your final reminder: today is the last day of the "year" for Club Nintendo Gold or Platinum status in North America, which means that today is the last day for you to enter points toward whatever the exclusive free gift is going to be. We don't dare hope for the kind of awesomeness seen in Japan's Platinum rewards, but we want free things.

If you aren't yet at 300 coins (for Gold) or 600 coins (for Platinum), and you've got more games to register, get to it right now! If you've been thinking of picking up Punch-Out!! or something this week, you should probably do it today! Conversely, if you're at 600 now and you have more stuff to register, wait until tomorrow so it counts toward next year's total!

If you're not sure about the eligibility of an older (pre-Club Nintendo) game and don't want to waste time registering it, consult the list of eligible games in the "Product Registration" area of the Club Nintendo FAQ.

Exclusive blue Wiimote, Nunchuk and MotionPlus for lucky Wii Sports Resort visitors

It seems that the door is beginning to creak open for alternate-color Wii systems and accessories. First, Nintendo finally announces a Wii in a new color scheme (black), and now, less than two weeks later, the company has announced another color for the Wiimote and Nunchuk -- and the first new color for the MotionPlus. However, this is going to be a little harder to come by.

From June 25 to August 31, Nintendo will give away exclusive light blue Wiimotes, MotionPlus attachments and Nunchuks (and a matching jacket, of course) to five thousand Japanese Club Nintendo members who register copies of Wii Sports Resort. Not that Nintendo needed to offer any kind of incentive to sell Wii Sports Resort.

UK Club Nintendo adds extra incentive to Icarian purchase

Club Nintendo in the UK is offering members something beyond the usual trade-for-points bonuses. The first hundred registered Club Nintendo members to purchase a copy of Icarian: Kindred Spirits on WiiWare will receive a copy of the game's soundtrack. The lucky hundred will receive (hopefully a link to) the soundtrack file via email shortly after downloading the game.

We appreciate seeing Nintendo promote its downloadable games for once, but here's a word of advice to the company who "reads the blogs," according to its E3 keynote. One of the best ways to advertise your WiiWare and Virtual Console games is to actually tell people in advance when they'll be available.
