'Club Nintendo is dead, long live the new loyalty program,' is the message from Nintendo this morning, after the company announced it's closing its current rewards service. Users in the US and Canada have until the end March to earn Club Nintendo Coins and until the close of June to redeem them, signalling when the service will finally hang up its brown boots.

"We thank all Club Nintendo members for their dedication to Nintendo games and their ongoing love for our systems and characters," said Nintendo of America executive VP Scott Moffit in the company's press release. "We want to make this time of transition as easy as possible for our loyal Club Nintendo members, so we are going to add dozens of new rewards and downloadable games to help members clear out their Coin balances."
Nearly one month ago, Nintendo revealed legendary Pokemon Mewtwo as a playable fighter for Super Smash Bros, available only to those that own both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. Expected to arrive in spring 2015, the downloadable character will be free to the dual-Smash players, but new information on Club Nintendo notes that all players may have access to Mewtwo down the road. While it's no guarantee, the promotion page includes a footnote that the "Mewtwo DLC may be available for purchase in the future," as corroborated by the game's Japanese site.

To make the prospect of purchasing the Pokemon character in Super Smash Bros. cloudier, Game Director Masahiro Sakurai told Video Gamer this week in regards to paid DLC for the games that the development team isn't "working on anything at the moment." Those looking to guarantee that they'll get a download code for Mewtwo will need to register their copies of both Smash Bros. games on Club Nintendo by March 31, 2015. Super Smash Bros. will launch on Wii U tomorrow in North America and November 28 in Europe. For more information on the game, be sure to check out our review.

Sitting on a pile of Club Nintendo coins, just waiting for some worthwhile physical goods to show up in the program's online store? Hopefully you've got some open wall space, because a new, Super Smash Bros.-themed poster set appeared earlier this week, offering the above spreads in exchange for 700 coins.

The set features familiar art with a few crossover tweaks. Sure, you've seen Rosalina and Mario soar through space, but ... hey, which yoga pose gives you the power of flight, Wii Fit Trainer? Isabelle also seems keen on Mayor Villager snatching up a Smash Ball to banish Link, Mario and Kirby from the homely Animal Crossing town.

Each poster is 22" x 28", with sets due to ship two to three weeks after coins are cashed in. For those that have never used Club Nintendo, coins can be earned by registering Nintendo games and systems with a Club Nintendo profile. Reward amounts vary, but registering 3DS and Wii U games generally grants 30 and 60 coins respectively, with post-play surveys and smaller, eShop-only games serving up smaller coin stacks.

If you've already lined your walls with past poster sets, well ... at least there's still that Smash Bros. soundtrack to earn.

After Super Smash Bros. launches on 3DS, you can walk along to your personal anthem from its soundtrack. If you're lucky enough, your song might land on the dual-disc sampling offered to Club Nintendo members, which would ensure you'd have a copy to lend audio personnel whenever a triumphant public entrance is needed.

In order to get the soundtrack selection seen above, fans in North America and Europe will need to register codes from both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash on their Club Nintendo account. A track list and estimated release date are currently unknown, but the NA Club Nintendo page fittingly teases that further details are still coming.

Nintendo introduced Ganondorf as a playable character for Hyrule Warriors during last night's Nintendo Direct livestream dedicated to the game. As it turns out, Club Nintendo members will have access to two special outfits for Ganondorf in the game as well. Those that buy Hyrule Warriors and register the game with Nintendo's loyalty program between September 26 and October 23 will receive a download code for the DLC, which features costumes inspired by Ganondorf's appearances in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

As the primary villain of the Legend of Zelda series, "The Demon King" Ganondorf will annihilate hordes of enemies with dark magic-like moves and his great sword. Hyrule Warriors will launch on September 26 for Wii U and will feature local cooperative multiplayer and some form of online play, though it won't have an online campaign.

Marking a change from the calendars, posters and other Nintendoodads, the 2014 Club Nintendo elite rewards for North America are all downloadable games. While that'll disappoint some of you, as a European I have to note on our side of the ocean it's all physical - and personally, not the most appealing selection either. So if you want to swap places... well, we can't, but you get the drift.

As before, qualifying Platinum members can have their pick of one Gold or one Platinum gift, while Gold members have to make do with the golden selection. If I were so lucky, I'd pick one of Game & Wario, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Dr. Luigi and Earthbound from the Platinum games. On the Gold side, I'm totally in the mood for some Zelda 2. Sigh.
Club Nintendo is offering new rewards for loyal customers, namely the sort of rewards you put other items in. Those with 700 free coins can pick up a green Mario-themed accessory basket that measures just under a foot wide. Don't be fooled by the name, as Nintendo can't stop the rebels among us from putting anything other than accessories in the basket, like cats. Or other, smaller baskets.

Club Nintendo's two other new physical rewards are Animal Crossing-themed pouches. Available in both pink and blue, the pouches store handheld systems as large as the 3DS XL for 500 coins. We're eyeing up one of the pouches to store candy instead, because Nintendon't tell us what to do.

As for the loyalty program's featured eShop game downloads, players can pick between four games until April 6: Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters on 3DS (150 coins), Number Battle on 3DS (200 coins), Yoshi on Wii U (200 coins) and Bonsai Barber on WiiWare (250 coins).

A supposed scan of a Toys R Us ad indicates a new Pokemon X and Y sale is on the horizon. The ad, courtesy of a GoNintendo tipster, states that new 3DS XL or 2DS buyers who additionally pick up one of six games and register their gear on Club Nintendo in March will receive a download code for Pokemon X or Y.

The six eligible games buyers may be picking from are Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Yoshi's New Island, Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, Super Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Mario Kart 7. As it stands now, there's no confirmation of the deal on either Club Nintendo or Toys R Us' sites. We've reached out to Nintendo for more information and will update as we learn more.

Nintendo's fan service-fueled Club Nintendo program has added a few new interactive items to its limited rewards program. For 200 coins each, players can grab Wii U ports of F-Zero and 1080 Snowboarding, which regularly sell on the eShop for $8 and $10 respectively. Nintendo 3DS's featured games are Game & Watch: Cement Factory (100 coins) and Spin Six (150 coins).

Club Nintendo coins are easy enough to come by, acquired by purchasing Nintendo products and participating in purchase habit surveys. Featured games, like those listed above, are available for a limited time. Coins can also be used to get your hands on a bevy of other Nintendo-themed products, such as t-shirts for wearing and screensavers for installing on your computer trapped in the year 1998.
Nintendo compiled a list of 20 games that Club Nintendo members noted as their favorites from 2013 recently. Nintendo featured ten games for each for 3DS and Wii U, with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as the lone game that landed on both lists.

Among the Wii U games selected by Club Nintendo members are the obvious Nintendo-published choices in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3. The best-of list also includes Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Rayman Legends and Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, the latter being the single eShop-only game of the Wii U group.

The list of 3DS favorites are marked by both Pokemon X and Y, Fire Emblem: Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. This month's Club Nintendo Rewards lineup offers up Wii U Virtual Console games for the first time, sunsetting the service's Nintendo Wii offerings in favor of Nintendo's latest console.

This month's selection includes the classic NES Joust-alike Balloon Fight and notoriously difficult Japanese import Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels. The Wii U versions of these games offer additional features not found in their previous Wii Virtual Console releases, adding savestate support and configurable controls.
Digital copies of all featured games can be purchased with Club Nintendo coins, which members earn by registering 3DS, Wii and Wii U software. The Lost Levels is available for 150 Club Nintendo coins, while Balloon Fight can be redeemed for 200 coins. Also up for grabs this month are the 3DS Virtual Console version of Mario's Picross (100 coins) and the 3DSWare tower defense game Starship Defense (150 coins).
[Update: Players report that Club Nintendo is actually offering the Wii version of Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, despite what the Rewards page claims. Take note before spending your coins.]
Wii U Virtual Console games added to Club Nintendo Rewards originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Dec 2013 14:30:00 EST. Those bored of staid black will find the selection of charging cradles for the 3DS XL handheld greatly expanded come Halloween, though none of these new colors will be available to you if you aren't a Club Nintendo member.

Like the original, black cradle, this new line of more colorful cradles makes charging the 3DS XL slightly more convenient. Instead of having to plug a small cord into your handheld, the cradle allows players to charge their device by simply dropping the machine in place. The only new addition found in these new cradles is their appearance; new models are available in blue, yellow, red, green and white.

Those of you who are already Club Nintendo members will be able to order the newly-colorful cradles for 500 points once they go on sale on October 31. If you aren't a Club Nintendo member, the process of signing up is quick and fairly painless, but keep in mind that those points are based on how many games you have purchased and redeemed through Club Nintendo. If you're only signing up to grab a new cradle, you'll need to buy at least six games to earn the necessary points.
Club Nintendo adds a rainbow of 3DS XL charging cradles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Oct 2013 22:00:00 EST. Nintendo has announced the elite rewards for its platinum and gold level Club Nintendo participants. Platinum members may choose between a three-poster set or a The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask soundtrack, while gold gifts include a 2014 calendar or a download of Super Smash Bros., Warioware D.I.Y. Showcase, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Super Mario Land or Sakurai Samurai.

Club Nintendo is an incentive program where coins are earned through registering Nintendo products and participating in surveys. Those coins are then redeemed for gifts - platinum status is achieved when a Club Nintendo member gathers 600 coins through the program, while 300 coins achieves gold status.
Club Nintendo 2013 elite members get swanky rewards originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Jul 2013 15:00:00 EST. Japan's Club Nintendo service was hacked following thousands of unauthorized accesses across the last month. Nintendo announced that an internal investigation confirmed just under 24,000 illegitimate logins between June 9 and July 4, from over 15 million attempts.

As translated by Kotaku, Nintendo said customer information compromised in the attack includes full names, phone numbers, and home and email addresses. Happily, the service doesn't hold credit card information. Kotaku notes the attack is apparently limited to Japan's Club Nintendo, and other countries don't seem to be affected.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo is strengthening Club Nintendo's security as a result, starting off with making users' old passwords invalid and requiring them to make new ones.
Club Nintendo Japan hacked originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Jul 2013 11:00:00 EST. Europeans who purchase and register Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the 3DS before 11pm UK time on June 30 will be eligible for a recommendation code good for one download of Capcom's game. If your pal registers a Nintendo 3DS or 3DS XL through Club Nintendo between 11pm UK time tonight and 11pm UK time on July 31, and enters the recommendation code before 11pm UK time on August 5, then they'll be able to download the game.

So what if you already registered Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 3DS? Check the Club Nintendo site tomorrow after 3pm UK time, at which point you should find your recommendation code available and can continue the rest of the process. The promotion only applies to the 3DS version - the Wii U game is not eligible - and Nintendo has announced no plans to extend the promotion outside of Europe.
Register Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 3DS in Europe, get free download for a friend originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 02:00:00 EST. If you transfer your Wii content to your new Wii U (or just start fresh on the Wii U) then buy WiiWare or Virtual Console games through the Wii U's "Wii Mode," you won't get the Coin value of those purchases.

This is because you can't link your Club Nintendo account to the virtual Wii within your Wii U, which you'd use to buy legacy games.

The easiest solution would be to buy whatever you want on Wii, and get the Coins, before transferring your Wii data to Wii U. But if it's too late for that, you have the choice either to buy on Wii U and forfeit the potential Coins, or realize it's 2013 and that you've likely been pretty much caught up with WiiWare for the past two years, with the possible exception of La-Mulana.
PSA: Wii Shop purchases don't get Club Nintendo coins through Wii U originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 04:30:00 EST. For 100 Club Nintendo coins, Wii owners can download the SNES classic, which combines elements of arcade gameplay with simulation-style flying mechanics - wait, you've never heard of Pilotwings? Well, congratulations on making us feel old.

If you're not a Club Nintendo member, you can pick up Pilotwings on the Wii Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points ($8). To redeem your Club Nintendo copy, head to the Club Nintendo site through the source link below and drop the 100 coins for a download ticket. You'll want to do so before October 28, 2012 - after that, it'll no longer be a Club Nintendo reward.
Pilotwings available through Club Nintendo until Oct. 28 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Oct 2012 23:59:00 EST. They're so popular that Club Nintendo has run out of stock.

"We're hoping to make this golden gem available again," Nintendo says on the product's page. In the meantime, get a better idea of what the gold Nunchuk looks like in our gallery.

Gallery: Club Nintendo Gold Nunchuk

Club Nintendo Gold Nunchuk is in our gallery, but out of stock originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Aug 2012 19:30:00 EST. We think that's a very reasonable price for a handful of pure, unfiltered gold with some wiring down the middle. Seriously, Nintendo has to be taking a hit for each one of these it sells, right? Oh - they're not solid gold? And Nintendo made sure to point that out in the description, reminding us once again that somewhere, someone might have actually thought a scenario like that was possible? Oh.

The gold (colored, not plated or solid) nunchucks match the gold Wii Remote Plus that came with limited editions of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The evidence remains in a screencap taken by NeoGAFfer Pappasman and a post on IGN, revealing the prizes that "Gold" and "Platinum" status holders will be able to choose this year.

The Platinum-exclusive prizes include a fancy Mario playing card set or a collection of three posters. Both Gold and Platinum have the option of the usual desk calendar, or - a first for the Elite prizes - a Virtual Console game (Super Mario Kart, Metroid 2, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, or The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask).

All of these games are available on the normal Wii (or 3DS) shop, so we only recommend opting for one of those if you really, really don't like any of the exclusive prizes.
Club Nintendo Elite prizes briefly revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 15:10:00 EST. Completing registration surveys for the Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL will yield only 100 coins, as opposed to the previously established 160 coins.

Software rewards are also getting a shake-up, though only select titles will see a decrease. Completing registration surveys for some 3D Classics and other downloadable titles will grant fewer coins; however, a lot of first-party 3DS games like Mario Kart 7 and some third-party ones, such as Resident Evil Revelations, are seeing increases. Wii and DS/DSi games are sadly seeing a reduction pretty much across the board. Better put in your Animal Crossing: City Folk code before time runs out!
Club Nintendo coin rewards changing on July 1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jun 2012 01:30:00 EST. Four new downloadable games have been made available for May, including a pair of 3DS titles and two WiiWare games.

Art Style: Pictobits is the frontrunner for our hard-earned coins, a delightful DSiWare puzzle game ported to the 3DS. Pictobits debuted next to Majora's Mask, so you may not remember it. The other high-profile game is a 3DS port of Urban Champion, the first fighting game to appear on the NES and quite possibly the worst game to appear on the NES.

The two WiiWare games are Snowpack Park and Eco Shooter: Plant 3D. All four games will be available for download until May 31.

[Thanks, Dali.]
New Club Nintendo awards include Art Style: Pictobits, Urban Champion originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2012 14:45:00 EST. This month, you can trade your hard-earned Club Nintendo Coins (earned by registering purchased games) for Art Style: Cubello on WiiWare, or the Game Boy games Mario's Picross and Radar Mission on 3DS eShop. They cost 100 Coins each.

As with previous monthly selections, these are all games that you can buy through the Wii Shop or 3DS eShop with real money. But I don't think there's ever been a Club Nintendo bonus this nice. The 3DS Game Card Case is both beautiful and genuinely useful, holding 18 DS or 3DS games in a case the size of a single DS game box. That's a rarity among DS game cases.

The transparent case comes with four reversible covers, for a surprisingly versatile look. I grabbed some random DS and 3DS cartridges from my desk, stored them in the case, and took some pictures so you can see for yourself.

Gallery: 3DS Card Case (Club Nintendo)

Gallery: Club Nintendo 3DS Card Case (official shots)

Club Nintendo card case is worth the fake money originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 19:15:00 EST. The new lineup is half as varied as those of previous months, offering only one DSiWare download and one Wii Virtual Console game.

For 150 Coins each, you can choose Art Academy: First Semester for DSiWare (but only available on 3DS through this offer) or Mario Party 2 for Wii. If you get that one, use the money you saved by buying it with Club Nintendo money to buy some extra controllers, either for friends or to replace the ones ruined by Mario Party.

For fans of physical, tangible goods, there's also this new 3DS card case. It holds 18 games and includes four "double-sided card covers." And it looks really nice.
Club Nintendo swaps downloadable games, adds Mario Party 2, Art Academy originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST. If your home is already full to bursting with Mario paraphernalia, you'll be delighted to learn that you can exchange your Club Nintendo Coins for downloadable games. Nintendo is featuring a rotating selection of WiiWare, Virtual Console, DSiWare, and eShop downloads offered on the North American Club Nintendo site.

Through January 10, your choices include Super Mario Kart (100 Coins), 3D Classics: Xevious (100 Coins), Fluidity (150 Coins), and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (150 Coins). In a way, this is really cheap as it trades illusory fun money for games -- but in another way, it's outrageously expensive as said fun money is only acquired through the for-real purchase of multiple games.

Those of you with more space for swag have new reward options as well: three different, adorable Mario notebooks, and a Zelda poster set.
Now you can exchange Club Nintendo Coins for games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 11:00:00 EST. Admit it: Your flair for fashion, design and symmetry has prevented you from fully appreciating the gold-colored Wii Remote Plus that came bundled with special edition versions of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Hey, we're not judging! Take one look at our wardrobe and you'll know our meticulous approach to color coordination. We're here to tell you there's a solution to your dilemma -- Japanese Club Nintendo members can now spend their hard-earned credits on an equally golden Wii Nunchuck.

The faux-metallic peripheral will run you 600 Points, while the other new addition to the rewards catalog -- a 3DS game case which holds up to 18 titles -- will cost you 150 Points. You can check out the new Nunchuck in the image posted above; just try not to let the shameful color mismatching get to you. We've contacted Nintendo to see if these new products are coming stateside.
Get a golden nunchuck to go with your golden Wiimote from Japan's Club Nintendo originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:45:00 EST. We get it. Everybody deserves to come home from a long day at the office and embrace a loved one, whether it be an actual human being, a pet or just a really awesome pillow. In this case, it's all pillow. Get it? Get it?!

Ahem, sorry -- Nintendo's latest Club Nintendo Platinum goodie for Japan (yeah, we're upset, too) has us all aflutter with excitement. It's the very awesome Mario pillow you see above, available as one of three different freebies for Platinum members. The other two freebies up for grabs are two table calendars or two different soundtracks, from a total of five, though we know eligible members would never go against the pillow. Because that'd just be insane.
Club Nintendo 'Dot Mario Cushion' is another reason to envy Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 01:00:00 EST. An intrinsic, universal facet of human nature is that we as people consistently want what we can't have. It's deeply rooted in our species' collective subconscious, silently driving our passions for incredible, unobtainable stuff. The Japanese Club Nintendo has a healthy track record for producing some of the most amazingly unavailable swag in our industry's long, storied history of unavailable swag, but we think these new limited edition 3DSes rank in at number one on our "Most Impossible Dreams" list.

The 3DSes, named "Peach," "Mario" and "Super Kinoko," natch, are being produced in limited numbers (1,000 each) for Nintendo's "A Little Mario-like 3DS" campaign. Japanese Club Nintendo members who register two games between now and January 15 will be automatically entered to win one of these adorable little 3DSes. Club members will also receive a free copy of the 3D Classics port of Kid Icarus upon entering. So! If you're a Japanese Club Nintendo member, we hope you can feel our burning envy through your monitor.

Unless you win one, in which case we'd love to have you over for <strike>poison</strike> tea some time.
Ultra-limited edition 3DSes are adorable, no you can't have one originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Oct 2011 21:30:00 EST. Your 3DS Mii is pathetically teensy now, suitable for posing next to hamsters and soda cans. But you could make your virtual self much more (virtually) substantial with the giant AR Card, available now from North America's Club Nintendo for 200 Coins. The 28.5" tall card has the question-mark block on one side, and Mario on the other, allowing it to be used for AR Mario images as well.

Two other prizes were added to the lineup today: for ten coins, you can get a Metroid: Other M screensaver -- released almost a year after the game ... or for 400 Coins, there's a set of three Donkey Kong posters, in the same style as previous Mario and Zelda posters.
Yesterday marked the end of the "year," as far as North America's Club Nintendo Elite Status goes. Did you earn 600 "Coins" by registering first-party Wii, DS, and 3DS games and taking surveys between the end of June last year and yesterday? If so, you're entitled to this year's gift for Platinum status holders, a set of commemorative pins.

The 25 Super Mario Bros. sprite pins come in six boxes that can be arranged to form a picture of Mario, a mushroom, or a Goomba.

If you hit the 300-Coin mark in that period, you're entitled to the "Gold" gift, which, as always, is a desk calendar with a different Nintendo game theme for each month. We just switched over to the Nintendogs + Cats page in our 2011 calendar this morning! Awwww.
Club Nintendo 'Platinum' members to receive commemorative pin set originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. We received a lot of emails yesterday from anxious readers, who had all registered their copies of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D with Club Nintendo for their free soundtrack discs (as announced in the E3 keynote), but weren't getting the email confirmations from Nintendo. And then the site crashed. As this was a first-come-first-serve offer, the lack of communication was disturbing. Readers reported yesterday that only a call to Nintendo customer service (on a Sunday!) would resolve the issue.

Today, Nintendo updated the page for the offer, extending the cutoff to "midnight, Pacific Time on Monday June 20, 2011" -- we're contacting Nintendo to clarify if that meant last night or tonight. We tested the deal and have yet to receive email confirmation ourselves, but Nintendo's page says, "You will receive an email confirmation within 7 days to confirming we have placed your order." It also says that everyone who registered before midnight Pacific on June 20 will receive a CD.

Update: Nintendo informed us that the deal is in fact active until midnight, Pacific time, tonight. There's still time!
Club Nintendo Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack offer extended [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 12:00:00 EST. "Hey, there's something on your shirt." "Oh, let me brush it off -- did I get it?" "No, it's still there. It's, like ... a fishing game?"

The first 3,000 Europe residents to register their new 3DS systems with Club Nintendo this Friday will receive a t-shirt with a picture of the question-mark AR Card on it, allowing them to augment the realities of their own bodies with archery, fishing, and other AR Games. Yes, it sounds funny, but it also means the person wearing the shirt has to hold still and watch someone else (the person with the 3DS cameras pointed at the shirt) have an awesome time.

Registering a 3DS in Europe will also get you 750 Stars, which puts you well on the way to that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sticker set you've been eyeing.
First 3000 European 3DS registrants become walking AR Cards originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 10:04:00 EST.
