You already kinda sorta knew about Cobalt, Mojang's first game launch as a publisher, but did you know that it'd be totally out today in Alpha form? Oh, yeah, okay, you already kinda knew that too. Well now it's official and has a price (€9.95/$13), but beyond that, we've also got a whole mess of info about today's launch. For one, the game will only be available on Windows PC initially, with OS X and Linux support arriving in "Beta." Moreover, there is no "single-player" version of Cobalt, only multiplayer and co-op modes -- according to Mojang, "hot seat" multiplayer is available on the PC and it's "theoretically limited by the number of USB controllers you manage to forcefully plug in to your poor computer." We're gonna go ahead and suggest no more than four, just to be safe.

The game's Alpha also comes with a level editor, which Mojang hopes players will use to "create everything from single maps to whole campaigns from scratch." That isn't to say that the dev team at Oxeye Game Studio are sitting on their hands and waiting for the user-generated content to populate their game, however -- the announcement promises that the team "will continue adding their own maps and game modes to the game as well as continue work on the main campaign."

Like with Minecraft before it, purchasing Cobalt in Alpha (or "pre-ordering" the final build, if you will) nets you access to all future builds of the game, barring the possibility of console or mobile ports. While there is no timeframe for the completed game's launch, the devs set a handful of milestones for themselves, such as the main campaign not showing up until after the game goes "Gold" (read: finished). In the meantime, we'll be sure to let you know when people start creating incredible homages to things they love within Cobalt, as with Minecraft before it.
Mojang's next work-in-progress, Cobalt, now available originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 15:20:00 EST. Usually, we receive a bit of lead time when it comes to release date announcements. "Oh, that game you're looking forward to," it usually goes, "that one won't be out til Q3 2014." We all know that anything past next spring is practically forever away -- fortunately, Mojang has announced that the excellent-looking Cobalt is going to drop this coming Friday, God willing and the creek don't rise.

"We haven't told anyone [about the release date] yet because we're aiming for Friday, but we don't know if we can make it," managing director Carl Manneh told Edge Online in a recent interview, "but I think we can." We do too, Carl. We believe in you.
Mojang aiming to publish Oxeye's 'Cobalt' on Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 00:30:00 EST. Okay, maybe 17 indie game music albums for $10 - including the likes of Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac, Minecraft, VVVVVV, A.R.E.S. and many more - just wasn't a sweet enough deal for you. Okay, how about 21 albums for $10? The Indie Game Music Bundle is now offering just that, thanks to the addition of four new albums: Circle (soundtrack for an unreleased game), Cardboard Box Assembler, Songs for the Cure and Bite Jacker.

For the pay-what-you-want price of $10 or more, you get downloads of all 21 albums from Bandcamp, including high quality FLAC files for all the audiophiles out there. You'd best snag 'em quick though - as of this post, the sale only has about 12 hours to go.
Indie Game Music Bundle adds 4 more albums, today is the last day originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 13:55:00 EST.

Mojang Specifications is making a pretty big assumption about the character of the folks who are attending the first MineCon expo: That they enjoy playing Mojang's games. Frankly, we think this disposition seems a little presumptuous, but nevertheless, the successful indie studio has announced that it will hand out vouchers to download alpha code for Scrolls (its next first-party title) and Cobalt (its first third-party title) to all of the event's attendees.

Now that we think about it, Mojang's missing out on some pretty great contest opportunities by just giving those things away. Why not hide them inside of cuboid trees, and give attendees axes, and just tell them to go crazy? Or bury them far, far below the earth, perching them precariously over a pit of awaiting lava? Or hide them in Notch's hat!
MineCon attendees get alpha codes for Cobalt, Scrolls originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST. There's a lot going on in Cobalt. Like, a lot.

In fact, as much as I detest "it's like this but this," I feel like that's the best place to start. The best way I can describe Cobalt (the first third-party release from Minecraft's Mojang) is as a curious mix of John Woo, Super Meat Boy, Contra and (most prominently) Super Smash Brothers.

Like I said ... a lot going on.
Mojang may only be known for Minecraft right now, but the studio's looking to branch out from blocks with its first third-party release: Cobalt, developed by Oxeye Game Studios. ... OK, so one of the pieces of concept art we were sent may just be a giant picture of a block made from many other blocks. But it's neon! Good luck finding that in Minecraft.

Kidding aside, Mojang's flagship seems to bear little resemblance to Cobalt, described as "an action game of running, jumping, rolling, shooting, throwing, dancing, hacking, rolling, flying, sliding, climbing, looting, deflecting, racing, piñata-ing, passing, scoring... and even more rolling."

Speaking of overlong quotes that we wouldn't dare attempting to condense, here's what we know of Cobalt's story:

"It's hard to be a metal face. Agent Cobalt has learned as much after finding the Space Exploration Foundation's lost colonization ship The Seed at planet X9CSEC5.5B-blue, Trunkopia. It was once built by a one million strong development team back on Earth, but disappeared merely 30 minutes after its subspace jump. Whatever happened on board during its misadventure, sanity was not invited."

So ... robots? The future? Your guess is as good as ours. Hopefully, all will be made clear when the game arrives this fall on Windows, followed by Mac and Linux versions.
It's true that they aren't "new" in the purest sense of the word, as the two-toned crimson and cobalt colors have been around in the U.S. for a while now, but they'd be new to Australia.

Yet, if you're reading DS Fanboy, there's a pretty high chance you already own a DS, so new colors like this are nothing more than evil temptations. With that said, do any of you in the Australian region want this rumor to be true, or for the safety of your wallets, are you hoping otherwise?

[Via Go Nintendo]
Rumor: Australia to get two more DS colors originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 15:00:00 EST.
Sales were up across the board in February, which is really the best kind of news (yes, even better than the kind that lets us be jerks to consoles with falling sales). Even bester is that our old friend the DS is back on top of the charts, having sold a remarkable 336,000 more units in February than in January. If pressed, we would guess that this is because there are now DS Lites in stores. Some of those Lites were in a fancy new color, as well, which may have driven some repeat sales.

Software sales were ... not awesome for the DS, unfortunately. Only Mario & Sonic represents the handheld on the charts. At least its sales went up.
Oh, you read that right. We're giving one lucky reader a brand-spanking-new Cobalt DS Lite (retails for $129.99). As one might imagine after seeing several giveaways on this blog before, entering to win this sweet handheld is a snap.

First of all, you must be 18 years of age or older (kids, ask you big brother or sister or your parents to enter for you!) and currently reside in the United States. So, if you meet those qualifications, all you need to do is tell us why you deserve this Cobalt DS Lite. Have you been reading us for awhile? Do you make your own DS Fanboy t-shirts in your spare time (send us one?) and have one for every day in the week? Whatever the reason is, tell us!

But, you can only comment once per day. So, don't go entering more than one comment each day or else you're disqualified. The contest begins as of right now and ends on Wednesday, February 20th at 11:59pm EST.
Would you ever buy a second DS, solely because you like the color? It sounds silly, but time and again this blogger has come close to shelling out for one of those Enamel Blue Lites that appeared exclusively in Japan, only to back down at the last minute. It may sound like a fairly ridiculous reason to purchase a second version of any gaming system, but then gamers aren't always rational people, and DSes are desirable and just about cheap enough to justify impulse purchases.

Of course, some of you might well be purchasing a second DS in the very near future, as the cobalt blue DS Lite hits U.S. stores today. If you are, tell us about it!
DS Daily: Is color enough to justify a second DS? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST. That's right folks, it's been confirmed (by Nintendo, not just a Circuit City page) that we're getting a new DS Lite. Much like the "senior edition" DS Lite that initially came bundled with Brain Age 2, this unit has a black base with the clamshell taking on the whole of the cobalt included in the package. Still though, this is one slick-looking unit for those of you who found the red to not be your thing.

For another snapshot of the box for the new unit, then head past the break.
Continue reading Cobalt & Black DS Lite confirmed

Cobalt & Black DS Lite confirmed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 09:45:00 EST.
When you look back over the various colors that the DS has been released in, with the exception of black, the schemes haven't exactly been the best for tough guys like ourselves. In fact, it sometimes seems like they're attempting to do the exact opposite. ("How can we trump pink with paw prints? How about sparklicious gold?") Finally, our prayers for a macho DS have (officially now) been answered by Nintendo, which unveiled the Cobalt/Black DS this morning.

We're willing to go on record as saying that this is the the toughest, manliest DS ever crafted. We'd bet it's made of recycled John Wayne VHS tapes and reeks of AXE body spray. If you're ready to look like a total stud while you play Pokemon, you'll only have to wait until Feb. 10.

Instead of staring at that pixelated mess we've had lying around, hit up our gallery to check out the nice higher-res shots (a whopping two!) Nintendo released this morning.

Gallery: Cobalt/Black Nintendo DS

Circuit City was so very kind to inform the populace that the cobalt blue Nintendo DS was ready to pre-order -- too bad nobody called "no take-backsies." GoNintendo reported on the pre-order for the sexy new DS, which looks like a blue version of last year's crimson model. It would appear that Circuit City jumped the gun announcing new model, as the page has now been removed.

We've contacted Nintendo for comment, though we don't expect confirmation outside of a potential, upcoming announcement.

Update: Buy.com is offering the Cobalt Blue model for pre-order.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Circuit City posts new cobalt blue DS model ... removes soon after [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. Rumors surfaced earlier this month that a cobalt blue DS Lite might be in the works, and now a page at Circuit City has popped up confirming the new model. It's not quite as we expected, however; the new model is blue and black, much like the crimson and black Lite that got our blood boiling last year.

Thoughts on the new color combo? If you're willing to shell out the cash for a new Lite, we want to know. It's a bit darker than we expected, put part of that is surely the reflection of the black backing. Overall, we're pleased.

[Update: The Circuit City page has been removed.]
[Via GoNintendo]
New blue DS Lite confirmed [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 18:40:00 EST.
