Lucasfilm's recruiting website says the studio is hiring a developer for "an open-world RPG." The mid-level gameplay designer position will work on code and engines for an upcoming (and presumably unannounced) role-playing game set to take place in an open-world environment. Other than that, the listing is unfortunately vague, asking only for a talented and experienced individual to work with artists and designers to put code together.

There's no mention of online or multiplayer features at all, and no hint of what platforms (other than PC) the game might be built for or run on. It does seem like LucasArts is working on putting together some kind of RPG, possibly based on one of its current properties, in an open-world setting. That's intriguing news on its own.
LucasArts job listing hints at in-development 'open-world RPG' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 23:30:00 EST.

Perhaps you saw (and even played) URL Hunter when it was being passed around the Internets a little while back -- it's a tiny little HTML 5 game that takes place all inside a long Uniform Resource Locator in your web browser's address bar. The HTML script moves a few little "a" characters around, and you can line them up in your sights with arrow keys, pressing space to fire and shoot as many as possible within a time limit.

Developer Corey Johnson, formerly of Maxis and now working at Github, says the game was developed over just a few hours of programming time. After reading about HTML 5's address bar API, he decided to try and make it interactive, and came up with URL Hunter. He had "lots of ideas at first, but cut most of them because of my self-imposed time constraints" of only a few hours of work.

Johnson says that HTML 5's Canvas element offers much more "potential" for browser-based games than his URL hacking. But that hasn't stopped us from getting the initial funding together for Joystiq Publishing's first browser-based product, Call of Document Object: Model Web Design 2.
URL Hunter offers a whole game in your browser's address bar originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 16:00:00 EST. Update: GameStop got wise to the contradiction, and has since made this deal non-applicable to StarCraft 2: Collector's Edition.

Alright, soldiers. It's do or die time. Well, fine, you probably won't die if you don't hop on this offer ASAP, but you might be filled with regret. For a limited time, you can pick up the collector's edition of StarCraft 2 with free shipping and a $20 discount, bringing its price down to $79.99.
Continue reading Get $20 off StarCraft 2 Collector's Edition at Gamestop [update: but not anymore]

Get $20 off StarCraft 2 Collector's Edition at Gamestop [update: but not anymore] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 12:45:00 EST. Got Skate 3? Want to bust kickflips as everyone's favorite outer space engineer, Isaac Clarke? By inputting the code "deadspacetoo" into the Cheats area under the Extras section, you'll unlock the Dead Space protagonist for use in Free Play mode. Who knew he could be so nimble in that outfit?

Keen observers may notice Clarke riding on a futuristic board. That's because, by inputting the code, you'll also gain the new deck. Sorry, it's non-transferable between skaters -- we tried.
Dead Space's Isaac Clarke playable in Skate 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 May 2010 05:30:00 EST. The last we heard about those Call of Duty Endowment dogooders was last year when the group came into existence, announcing intentions of assisting US military veterans with getting work when returning home. But just last week, CODE announced a partnership with two colleges to support scholarship programs in game development for veterans.

Both Austin Community College in Austin, TX and Madison Area Technical College in Madison, WI will offer assistance to veterans "with the costs of software, transportation, and other educational needs" -- while the GI bill is intended to cover the cost of tuition -- to the tune of four $2,500 scholarships per academic year at each school ($1,250 for part-time students). The criteria for receiving aid at each school is slightly different, though not entirely dissimilar: both require a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher in previous college work, to have been an honorably discharged veteran from the US Armed Forces and to demonstrate a financial necessity for the assistance.

Applications are already open for the coming school year, the first of five years the program is scheduled to run (totaling $100,000 when all is said and done). Interested applicants are encouraged to apply for ACC here and MATC here.
Sony's taking a fairly unconventional approach to putting a stop to piracy on the PSP platform. The recently released handheld shooter, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3, comes bundled with a code which, once redeemed through the PlayStation Network, allows the player to access the game's online modes. Folks who purchase the game directly through the PSN are automatically online-enabled -- but those who nab the game illicitly won't have access to the code, and will have to shell out $20 to unlock a license which lets them play online.

Sony's John Koller recently spoke to IGN about the activation procedure, saying it's "a trial run for a new initiative we are exploring for the platform." Obviously, it's going to be very effective at sticking it to software pirates worldwide. Have you been plugging away at Guitar Hero: World Tour, only to still be lacking those last few songs to complete your set list? Are you the type of person that enjoys cutting corners and finds diligence to be nothing more than a nine-lettered word? Well, we've got something for you: the code to unlock every song in World Tour.

We're not going to leave it on the front page for everyone to see, however. We've tucked the code past the break, away from those of you who want to earn your songs and not hit a specific button sequence in order to unlock them. Enjoy.

Continue reading Hey, cheaters, this is how you unlock every song in Guitar Hero: World Tour

Hey, cheaters, this is how you unlock every song in Guitar Hero: World Tour originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 13:36:00 EST.
The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handhelds and handheld gamers. The folks behind the Official Nintendo Magazine posted a video showing off Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008's RTS-esque plays and what the pitch will look like when you replace your team of normal-sized-head players with a squad of Miis, goofy expressions and all. It's worth watching the five-minute clip for both of those details!

The game looks as goofy as NBA Jam's Big Head code, except with soccer! Also, PES 2008 matches will feature full commentary by Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson, and not some guy yelling out a bunch of foolishness like "Razzle dazzle!" and "Boomshakalaka!" If that sounds like a minus to you, you always have the option of shouting those lines out yourself; that's what we do whenever we're at the dinner table. Kick the read link below for the video.

Winning Eleven's Mii support video turns heads originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. "Pwnage ... is inevitable."

"Hah!" said his adversary, 7111-9463-2931. "If you wish to grok your princess once more, you'll taste the fury of my skillz!" He raised his arms high in the air. "363171-765491, I summon thee from the shades of hell! Rise forth and rock this bitch!"

The ground shook, and from a spewing chasm came the beast, hideous and deformed. 3494-5541-9771 stood his ground. No creature would keep him from his princess. He dodged a 7612-8113-4353-1919 and drew his 1913-1564-8328, shining in the darkness. With one deft blow he severed the 363171-765491's head, and leapt toward 7111-9463-2931.

"Boom--" shouted 7111-9463-2931, raising his staff. The two collided--

"HEADSHOTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!"

And all was silent. 3494-5541-9771 had won. He sheathed his 1913-1564-8328 and approached his beautiful princess, 654232-918811. Her eyes fluttered open.

"Did you ... did you pwn him?"

"I did, fair princess."

"Well done, knight. And now, your just reward..."She slowly began to disrobe...

"Wait," she said suddenly. "Do I have your Friend Code?"

"What? I don't need your friend co--"

"Sorry, sweetie," said 654232-918811, donning her gown once more. "No code, no multiplayer." She walked away.

"I ... but ... "Pwnage ... is inevitable."

Her eyes fluttered open.

"Did you ... did you pwn him?"

"I did, fair princess."

"Well done, knight. And now, your just reward..." People are just as apt to sing praises about its addictive gameplay as they are to howl over the AI's godlike prescience. We've spent more than a few battles shaking our fists at the game as computer-controlled enemies racked up lucky combos and more extra turns than chicken on a rotisserie.

Sensing that the mob was two forums threads away from storming his house with torches and pitchforks, Infinite Interactive's Steve Fawkner made a public statement assuring players that the AI has no unseen advantages. Having worked on the code himself, Steve reasoned that he's too lazy to have programmed anything that advanced.

If that explanation isn't convincing enough, there are still steps you can take to even the playing field. You can unlock a debug menu by pushing in a complex set of keypresses, allowing you to activate several hidden features. Check past the post break for more details on the cheat code and a comic about Puzzle Quest's AI.
Continue reading Puzzle Quest's AI doesn't cheat, but you can!

Puzzle Quest's AI doesn't cheat, but you can! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 01 Apr 2007 18:30:00 EST.
