Tomorrow's PSN update will be notable for what it adds to the PlayStation Store, though you may be a little fonder of what it's set to remove: fifty percent from the price of 11 games in an "11 for 2011" sale.

Among the discounted games are Double's Fine enchanting Costume Quest for $7.49, hypnotic brick breaker Shatter for $3.99 (its excellent soundtrack is also discounted to $2.99), and Hoard for $7.49 -- a fitting saving for a dragon looking to amass a boast-worthy pile of presents and a roast-worthy mass of peasants. Sony has also included other well-received games like Swords and Soldiers, Tumble and Space Invaders Infinity Gene in the sale (valid in the US, Canada and Mexico through January 31).

Have a peek at the full list after the break. Warning: Peggle is in there too.

Continue reading 11 PSN games discounted by 50% tomorrow

11 PSN games discounted by 50% tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 15:40:00 EST. Sony is launching an import selection for the Japanese PSN as well, which includes more recent downloadables from the west.

The inaugural offerings on the "Western Game Buyer Selection" label on November 25 will include Castle Crashers for ¥1,500, Comet Crash for ¥1,000, and the PlayStation Mini Young Thor for ¥500. The screenshots sent out by Sony include no Japanese text, so it's likely these will be dropped on PSN untranslated, like the PSOne Imports in North America. We hope for Japan's sake that Sony is as diligent about populating this service as MonkeyPaw Games is here.

[Update: Pelfast studio head John Bates got in touch with us to let us know that Comet Crash, at least, has been professionally localized for Japan. So this is more than a simple storefront for unlocalized games!]

Castle Crashers featured in Japan's PSN 'Western Game Buyer Selection' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 11:55:00 EST. One of the best PSN games you probably haven't played is soon to receive a massive add-on. The "Bionic Storm" DLC will add "50 percent more" content to the tower-offense game, including 16 new levels and 10 battle maps ... and nukes -- for $5.
Continue reading Comet Crash 'Bionic Storm' DLC coming soon

Comet Crash 'Bionic Storm' DLC coming soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 17:20:00 EST. Flower
This year had a number of terrific downloadable games (this list is a testament to that), however no game -- retail or digital -- connected with me like Flower. Jenova Chen's flOw was an interesting experiment, but Flower is an actual game. In fact, Flower is one of the few experiences I can think of that show the true potential of games as a unique storytelling medium. No other non-interactive art form will ever be able to replicate what thatgamecompany has managed to create.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Andrew's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Andrew's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Jan 2010 21:00:00 EST. Pelfast (what an odd name!) has made it so you officially have no more excuses for not trying its excellent PSN tower defense game, Comet Crash, by today releasing a demo version of it on the PlayStation Store. In fact, the timing couldn't be better, since if you like what you <strike>see</strike> play, the game happens to be on sale for $4.99 (down from $9.99) through December 2.

If you're going to get the game (and we couldn't recommend it more, really) and have some Amazon credit or a gift card at the ready, Comet Crash is also going to be available via the online mega-retailer starting later today -- at the $4.99 price, to boot.
Comet Crash demo lands on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 20:15:00 EST. It seems the PlayStation Store got a little jealous of the brick-and-mortar retailers who were offering discounts during this week of <strike>Black Friday</strike> Thanksgiving. Beginning with today's specially-dated Tuesday PSN update, a handful of downloadable PS3 titles will be offered for half-price until December 2. Here's a list of the encheapened games, and their temporarily slimmed-down prices:

Bomberman Ultra - $4.99

Comet Crash - $4.99

Flower - $4.99

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao - $7.49

The Last Guy - $4.99

Prince of Persia Classic - $4.99

Smash Cars - $7.49

A new (and free) title update, now available for the PSN-exclusive Comet Crash, introduces new levels, maps, battle settings and an "expert" difficulty mode to the Tower Defense-style game. What sets Comet Crash apart from other titles in the genre is the game's offensive gameplay, allowing players to send waves of their own forces against an ongoing alien threat. Aliens as enemies in a video game? Creativity! According to the PlayStation Blog, the 1.03 update includes:

"Expert" difficulty setting for seasoned Comet Crash players.

4 new Resurgence levels -- one unlocked at the end of each comet during the Campaign.

4 new Battle maps.

Battle timer setting. After the timer runs out, all mobile units generate at 8x the normal rate.

Thorium setting to tweak available resources in Battle mode.

Comet Crash update brings new content and features originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 16:45:00 EST. We don't want the big guys to have all the fun, so this week we're finding out the origins of a couple of indie names. First is Comet Crash developer Pelfast, and then we've got a bonus submission from indie gaming hub 2BeeGames.

"Back in college (early 2000), I needed a company name that represented graphics/animation -- where I thought I would end up. Pixel was a little overused, so I went with the lesser known abbreviation, pel, and ended up with Pelfast after a little brainstorming. A quick internet search turned up only one hit for pelfast: some kind of WWII military ammunition, so I felt it would work."

-John Bates, Pelfast founder

"2BeeGames has several meanings. Originally the 'two bees' referred to myself and my partner who came up with the idea for an indie game destination/community. As the concept of the site evolved into a place where we would hold competitions and publish the best games on the site, the name took on another meaning, as in a place where indie games go 'to be' published onto consoles. Now as our community grows, we're running with the bee theme and our community is called 'the hive'."

Any excuse to talk about one of PSN's greatest downloadable games is fine by us. This tower-offense game may not have the most inspired visuals, but its radically unique interpretation of the tower defense genre had us enthralled from the game's start to its very end. Comet Crash does a remarkable job of constantly introducing new game mechanics, and ends with a battle with the most number of enemy units we've ever seen in a game ever.

Gamers in the US will be able to download a new patch in the coming weeks that adds "some new and remastered sound effects, graphics tweaks, language support and a newly optimized SDTV layout." Europeans will be able to get the enhanced game for the first time in October. Trust us on this: you'll really enjoy it.
US gets free Comet Crash update, while Europe (finally!) gets the game originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 20:30:00 EST. It's one of the best (and most underused) features of the PS3: the ability to record gameplay footage onto YouTube. The quietly-released strategy PSN game, Comet Crash, is getting a new patch that adds YouTube recording, amongst other features:

Flag icons added to scoreboard. If you have an existing score, you have to get a better score in order to register your flag.

Save Data for Campaign progress.

Campaign time penalties are now applied as they occur, instead of at the end of the game.

Rank is displayed in Area Complete screen.

Building on top of units of the same team will destroy them instead of floating them.

In Battle mode, the player that destroys an enemy base gets a Thorium bonus.

It's nice to see more games start taking advantage of YouTube support. Imagine a future where all PS3 and PSN games offer some kind of in-game screenshot and YouTube functionality. That would be pretty stellar!
Tomorrow's Spring Fever game is Comet Crash. And guess what? It's yet another tower defense game. Debuting on the PlayStation Network tomorrow, the game will feature 28 stages, and two multiplayer modes: a 3-player co-op mode and a 4-player offline battle mode. Not only will the title feature 1080p visuals, but you'll be able to play your own music thanks to its XMB music support.

The PlayStation.Blog has more details on the upcoming game, but for now you can watch the trailer. We know there are many that are hankering for some more tower defense, but we feel like this might be too soon after Savage Moon. Check it out tomorrow for $9.99.
Comet Crash hits PSN tomorrow for $9.99 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST.
