While the new console and Kinect might get the lion's share of attention at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-reveal-live/">Xbox Reveal</a>, the good ol' Xbox controller is getting some redesign love on the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a> as well. The control will feature an integrated battery compartment, Wi-Fi Direct, "impulse triggers" that incorporate extra feedback and, most important of all, a cross-shaped "precision" D-Pad.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-controller-has-new-d-pad-integrated-battery-compartmen/">Xbox One controller has new D-pad, integrated battery compartment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 13:29:00 EST. Gaming hardware manufacturer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/razer/">Razer</a> has wrapped up the beta testing phase for its long-in-development <a href="http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-controllers/razer-atrox">Razer Atrox Arcade Stick</a> for the Xbox 360, and will begin accepting pre-orders next week.<br />
<br />
We had a look at a prototype version of Razer's controller at TGS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/video-hands-on-with-the-razer-arcade-stick/">way back in 2011</a>, where the concept made a strong showing. Razer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/razer-building-xbox-360-arcade-stick-with-help-from-people-who/">previously announced</a> that it would be working closely with the fighting game community throughout the Atrox's development, and the finished product will ship with tournament-grade Sanwa buttons and multiple interchangeable ball-top and bat-top sticks.<br />
<br />
Razer has developed the Atrox with modding in mind; the hatch-like surface can be opened with a button press, allowing for easy maintenance and design customization. Once opened, the Atrox boasts a spacious interior with compartments for replacement parts, tools, and the fat wads of cash you'll pick up from underground <i>Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3</i> money matches.<br />
<br />
Atrox pre-orders will open at Razer's website on May 21. The Atrox will retail for $200.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/razers-atrox-arcade-stick-still-exists-pre-orders-open-may-21/">Razer's Atrox arcade stick still exists, pre-orders open May 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 May 2013 01:00:00 EST. Communicating with the phone via bluetooth, the pad has an adjustable sliding cradle as well as four familiar-looking face buttons.<br /><br />The controller runs on triple-A batteries and interfaces with a pretty slick looking arcade app, as demonstrated by the above hands-on video from our friends over at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-prototype-wireless-game-pad-hands-on/">Engadget</a>. Expected at retail sometime this summer, Samsung's prototype has yet to earn itself an official name or price point. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at Sony's ridiculously named PlayStation 3 tablet controller patent.<br /><br />The device Sony refers to as an "EyePad" in its patent application, seen in the sketch above, would theoretically come equipped with the usual trappings you'd expect from a PS3 controller: D-Pad, buttons, analog stick, SIXAXIS motion sensors, etc. The more interesting bits, however, are a bit harder to pick out from the drawing. <br /><br />First of all, those shaded stripes on the edge are <em>not</em> a creamy nougat center, as we had originally surmised, but rather illuminated strips of LEDs or comparable light source. This would allow the EyePad, in conjunction with an EyeToy camera, to function as a PlayStation Move controller.<br /><br />Secondly, those dots on either corner of the apparent display (which could actually be a normal display, touchscreen or Vita-esque touchpad, according to the filing) are paired stereoscopic cameras. The cameras are arranged in such as way that their respective fields of vision provide a full, 360-degree view of any object placed onto the surface of the EyePad's screen, allowing for objects to be fully scanned in three dimensions and then rendered in game. Theoretically the player could also place their face within this field, allowing for face mapping in character customization applications, for instance.<br /><br />Again, we doubt this patent represents anything more than a combination of day-dreaming and butt-covering on the parts of Sony's engineers and legal department, respectively, but the ideas presented here are definitely interesting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/sony-patents-eyepad-a-move-enabled-ps3-tablet-controller/">Sony patents 'Eyepad,' a Move-enabled PS3 tablet controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 13:30:00 EST. What newly shows up in this photo is what's apparently a 3.5mm audio jack situated on the side below the PS button. The photo can be traced back to the <a href="http://forums.gametrailers.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&amp;t=1345970&amp;start=0#p37875070">GameTrailers forum</a>, although it's unclear if the poster was who genuinely took it.<br /><br />Destructoid posted a photo yesterday of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/14/report-playstation-4-controller-prototype-caught-on-camera/">similar-looking prototype controller</a>, with the same rounded sides, differently shaped analog sticks, and what's apparently a small touchscreen at the top. The previous photo also showed a bar with a similar glow to that of the PlayStation Move, suggesting the controller has motion tracking built-in. Sources at <a href="http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/02/15/is-this-playstation-4s-controller">IGN</a> indicated that photo was the real deal, but that it was of an early prototype.<br /><br />We may know more about the next PlayStation console and its controllers following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/playstation-2013-event-set-for-feb-20/">next week's PlayStation 2013 event</a>, where Sony's expected to announce the PS3's successor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/15/rumor-another-day-another-ps4-prototype-controller-photo/">Rumor: Another day, another PS4 prototype controller photo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2013 12:30:00 EST. Posted on <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/what-the-hell-is-this-the-new-playstation-controller--244985.phtml">Destructoid</a>, the image reveals a controller with many similarities to Sony's typical DualShock design, albeit with a few cosmetic alterations like rounded sides, differently shaped analog sticks and a D-pad that looks very similar to the one used on the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/@vita">PlayStation Vita</a>.<br /><br />A few <em>atypical</em> features include what appears to be a touchpad similar to the rear touchpad on the Vita, a built-in speaker and a strange, glowing bar. The bar bears some likeness to the otherworldly glow of a a PlayStation Move, suggesting the controller could have built-in motion tracking.<br /><br />According to sources at <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/14/is-this-playstation-4s-controller">IGN</a>, the controller is indeed real, though it's an early prototype and possibly very different from the final design. Sony is widely expected to unveil its next PlayStation at an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/playstation-2013-event-set-for-feb-20/">event next Wednesday</a>, and hopefully we'll know more by then.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/14/report-playstation-4-controller-prototype-caught-on-camera/">Report: PlayStation 4 controller prototype caught on camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 16:39:00 EST. Got fired today. Time for new exciting projects."<br /><br />Initial reports from employees included the phrases "great cleansing" and "large decisions," and a few claimed as many as 25 people were affected, though this number is unconfirmed, Gamasutra reported. The layoffs hit more than one department, including Android and hardware staff.<br /><br />Ellsworth, at least, confirmed her own firing. She began working on next-gen gaming hardware at Valve, specifically <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/valve-hardware-jeri-ellsworth/">living room PC controllers</a>, in 2012. Ellsworth was concerned with transforming keyboard and mouse controls to a gamepad in a way that wouldn't interfere with current Steam game designs, or turn off those more comfortable with a traditional controller.<br /><br />Valve's recent focus has been on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/09/up-close-with-valves-steam-box-prototypes/">Steam Box</a>, a hardware system that allows <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/gabe-newells-dice-keynote-steam-box-price-point-much-much-lo/">PC streaming and gaming</a> on living room TVs. Ellsworth worked on controller prototypes alongside the launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/big-picture-mode/">Big Picture Mode</a>, a Steam interface designed for controller navigation.<br /><br />We've contacted Valve for more information about the layoffs.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/43261/Jason-Holtman-leaves-Valve">Develop</a> reports that Valve's Director of Business Development, Jason Holtman, left the company. Valve has yet to respond to requests for comment.<br /><br /><strong>Update 2: </strong>Valve's <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/people.html">employee page</a> changed significantly sometime in the past month, as demonstrated by <a href="https://twitter.com/garrynewman/status/301785811630821376">this comparison</a> from Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman. There are eight names gone in the latest version: <em>TF2</em> art lead Moby Francke, former Weta man Keith Huggins, <em>Half-Life 2</em> programmer Tom Leonard, <em>Portal </em>team member Realm Lovejoy, Half-Life man Marc Nagel, ex-Lord of the Rings animator Bay Raitt, engine programmer Elan Ruskin, and Jason Holtman, mentioned above.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/13/report-valve-fires-dozens-of-hardware-android-staff/">Report: Valve fires dozens of hardware, Android staff [Update 2]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 13:20:00 EST. The company also grounded out some details on its docking station. The controller, which incorporates the dongle-like GameStick android console and plugs into the TV's HDMI port, underwent a few changes based on feedback from Kickstarter backers.<br /><br />In addition to the more curvy design, the HDMI stick now sits at the back of the controller. The stick itself gets an expandable 32GB MicroSD card slot, which PlayJam says was added "in response to overwhelming demand." With the <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872297630/gamestick-the-most-portable-tv-games-console-ever">Kickstarter campaign</a> sitting at over five times the $100,000 goal with just under three days to go, we can believe the demand.<br /><br />As for the docking station, as you'd expect it charges up the controller for wireless use; Playjam tells us the station connects to the controller via electromagnetic coils. What's clever is that it also supports peripheral hardware such as mice, keyboards, cameras, and microphones for use with GameStick. It also has a slot for a 64GB memory card, taking the GameStick's total potential capacity up to 104GB. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/">Gamestick Controller</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/#5602540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/01/gamestick-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/#5602541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/01/gamestick-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/#5602542"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/01/gamestick-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/#5602543"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/01/gamestick-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestick/#5602544"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/01/gamestick-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/29/gamestick-controller-final-design-unveiled-docking-station-deta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GameStick controller final design unveiled, docking station detailed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/29/gamestick-controller-final-design-unveiled-docking-station-deta/">GameStick controller final design unveiled, docking station detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 09:00:00 EST. Responding to feedback (and changed already in progress), the team behind the Android-powered system has <a href="http://www.ouya.tv/its-all-about-control/">announced several changes</a> to the peripheral. First and foremost, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/27/ouyas-getting-game-streaming-via-onlive-also-look-at-the-full/">circular D-pad</a> has been replaced with cross-shaped pad, which should be a welcome change for games that require more precision.<br /><br />Second, the analog sticks are now rubberized on top to allow for better grip. Furthermore, the touch pad's sensitivity has been improved, the triggers moved closer to the body of the controller and the battery compartment made more secure.<br /><br />All of these improvements (and more, possibly) can be yours this April, when the consumer version of the Ouya is expected to launch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/24/ouya-controller-being-redesigned-based-on-feedback/">Ouya controller being redesigned based on feedback</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 20:30:00 EST. But if you're giving a 360 this year (or know someone who's getting one and could use some extra gear), this might make a nice package under the celebratory symbol of your respective holiday.<br /><br />[Thanks, Shin.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/22/xbox-360-essentials-pack-coming-in-october-for-79-99/">Xbox 360 Essentials pack coming in October for $79.99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 01:00:00 EST. Did you know that? How do we keep letting this <em>junk</em> get away with that?<br /><br />Well, here's an idea: turn that lazy junk into working video game hardware. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/5919472/how-to-turn-old-car-parts-into-a-video-game-controller">Jason Torchinsky</a> did just that, using an old power seat controller from an Oldsmobile to play some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ms-pac-man/"><em>Ms. Pac-Man</em></a>. First, buy this <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/accessories/dualshock-3-wireless-controller-metallic-gold-gamestop-exculsive/102832#media">GameStop-exclusive</a> "metallic gold" PS3 controller when it comes out in October. Then, invite a friend over. When he or she is out of the room, swap the normal PS3 controller you were using for this new one, then start crying loudly.<br /><br />When your friend comes in to find out what's wrong, explain that you've been suddenly granted the Midas Touch and you're cursed with a life devoid of contact with anything but gold.<br /><br />Then - and this is crucial - yell "GOTCHA" before your unwitting target can ask what's wrong with you or note that the controller looks an awful lot like plastic, and that they can see the hastily hidden packaging anyway.<br /><br />Those of you in Europe can play along too: it's being released as a <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/06/05/on-your-marks-get-set-go/">"limited edition"</a> this month. It's what came to mind after our pals at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/microsoft-patent-wearable-emg-device/">Engadget</a> discovered <a href="http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.htm&amp;r=43&amp;p=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;d=PTXT&amp;S1=%2820120501.PD.+AND+Microsoft.ASNM.%29&amp;OS=ISD/20120501+AND+AN/Microsoft&amp;RS=%28ISD/20120501+AND+AN/Microsoft%29">a Microsoft patent</a> for an EMG (electromyography) device.<br /><br />The patent calls it the "Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller," which would potentially allow users to control their devices (smartphone, computer and the like) through movement - the device would monitor muscle movement, either through a wireless or wired connection. The patent suggests a variety of different devices on Microsoft's mind: the armband seen above; a shirt (smartshirt, we like to call it); and even a pair of sunglasses, though they appear less badass and expensive than Adam Jensen's or, heck, even the shades JC Denton rocks in the original <em>Deus Ex</em>.<br /><br />We just hope one of those EMG devices has a built-in niceness chip, to prevent future cyber-people from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/adam-jensen-really-wants-his-mirror-replaced/">freaking out over tiny problems</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/microsoft-patent-brings-us-one-step-closer-to-real-life-deus-ex/">Microsoft patent brings us one step closer to real-life Deus Ex</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 02:00:00 EST. For the Japanese release of the eye-catching new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/microsoft-goes-baller-with-chromed-out-360-controllers/">"chrome" Xbox 360 controllers</a>, Microsoft and Capcom have bundled bonus <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dragons-dogma">Dragon's Dogma</a> </em>content. We bet deadly dragon fire looks lovely reflected in the polished surface of the new controller.<br /><br />Each &yen;5,775 ($71) controller will include a code for eight "special" downloadable quests. Both the game and the controllers (in red, blue, and silver) will be released in Japan on May 24.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/xbox-360-chrome-series-controllers-include-dragons-dogma-dlc/">Xbox 360 'Chrome series' controllers include Dragon's Dogma DLC in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 17:15:00 EST. We also spend quite a bit of time looking up how to awkwardly use terms from terrible rap songs.<br /><br />Given that, you'll understand our excitement this afternoon over Microsoft's announcement of chromed out Xbox 360 controllers. Better yet, said controllers feature the updated D-pad that Microsoft added in a new 360 controller <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/new-xbox-360-controller-dpad-release-date/">back in 2010</a>.<br /><br />As of now, the "Special Edition Chrome Series" wireless controllers will run $54.99 ($5 more than the usual wireless controller price) and are expected to be available at some point in "mid-May." Colors and availability vary by region, according to Major Nelson. Why anyone would want something other than what you see shining above, however, is beyond us.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/">Xbox 360 Special Edition Chrome Series Wireless Controllers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/#4934615"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/68929070387c2447eff4b-1333388101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/#4934614"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/6892906812e32197c699b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/#4934616"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/7039002565a7ac7a02e1b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/#4934617"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/70390027415543c99e0co_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-special-edition-chrome-series-wireless-controllers/#4934618"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/70390027891f4bd9d12bo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/microsoft-goes-baller-with-chromed-out-360-controllers/">Microsoft goes baller with chromed out 360 controllers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 15:40:00 EST. During a preview event for the sequel, Junction Point showed off prototypes for two new Nunchuk controllers based on in-game items.<br /><br />The first is an updated version of PDP's <a href="http://www.pdp.com/p-929-epic-mickey-paintbrush-chuk-for-the-wii.aspx">"Paintbrush Chuk" accessory</a>, designed to mimic Mickey's paintbrush. The new version has the Epic Mickey 2 logo and a glowing blue paint blob at the end of the brush. The second, and inexplicably more desirable of the two, is a Nunchuk based on Oswald's remote device, silver and boxy. It's like a literal "Wii Remote" (except, of course, it's a Nunchuk attached to an existing Wii Remote).<br /><br />Being that these were both prototypes, and the game hadn't even technically been officially announced yet, there weren't any details to be had about pricing or availability. We'll keep you updated, because these silly controllers are fun.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/epic-mickey-2-controllers-wii/">Epic Mickey 2 controllers (Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/epic-mickey-2-controllers-wii/#4914129"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/epicmickeycontroller1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/epic-mickey-2-controllers-wii/#4914130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/epicmickeycontroller3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/epic-mickey-2-controllers-wii/#4914131"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/epicmickeycontroller6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/epic-mickey-2-controllers-wii/#4914132"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/epicmickeycontroller8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/look-at-these-adorable-epic-mickey-2-wii-controller-prototypes/">Look at these adorable Epic Mickey 2 Wii controller prototypes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 13:00:00 EST. Zynga founder Mark Pincus says <a href="http://gigaom.com/2012/03/19/mark-pincus-interview-by-om-malik/">in an interview with Om Malik</a> that its policy extends to current tech being built to share saves across the cloud. "In other words, you can play a game on a computer and call it up on Xbox," Pincus says as an example, "and you resume from the point you left off, except the game play will now be customized for the Xbox controller." Game information will be shared, but the experience will be different.<br /><br />That's already the case for Zynga's games on iOS -- they have a very different feel when played on mobile devices, and have even found different audiences. "<em>Words for Friends</em> doesn't do as well on Facebook as it does on the iPhone," for instance, "because they are a mobile first experience. <a href="http://company.zynga.com/games/zynga-poker">Our poker game</a> does well on the mobile as well."<br /><br />This doesn't mean that Pincus is saying Zynga's working on Xbox ports of its titles. Instead, the company is building out the tech right now to extend these games out in various forms to even more platforms in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/zynga-ceo-company-building-cross-platform-cloud-compatibility/">Zynga CEO: company building cross-platform cloud compatibility</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 06:00:00 EST. Engineers at the University of Utah hope to change that with a <a href="http://unews.utah.edu/news_releases/a-new-direction-for-game-controllers/">new kind of controller</a>. The prototype controller provides haptic feedback via small pads that sit under the player's thumbs. These pads can move in any direction, stretching the skin of the thumb, offering directional cues or simulating in-game events.<br /><br />The pads can mimic the usual game fare -- explosions and the like -- but they can also simulate more tactile sensations, like the "feeling" of crawling on the ground while prone in a shooter. Another example shows the pads indicating the direction that enemy fire is coming from, or simulating impact against a surface.<br /><br />It's a bit hard to grasp from the description alone, so we suggest you check out the video above for a peek at our possible future. Associate professor of mechanical engineering, William Provancher, hopes to see the controller in production in time for the next generation of game consoles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/controller-prototype-stretches-thumbs-for-extra-feedback/">Controller prototype stretches thumbs for extra feedback</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 23:00:00 EST. A controller is a controller is a controller. The most innovative additions to console controllers these days usually involve an extra turbo switch, or maybe <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/05/logitech-fills-empty-ps3-pad-with-air/">a fan in the handles</a>.<br />
	<br />
	<a href="http://www.madcatz.com/mlg/#consoleselect-controller">Mad Catz' new MLG Pro Circuit Controller</a> stands out, and was first shown off at CES 2012 last week. Mad Catz worked with Major League Gaming players and other gamers to figure out just what it is they wanted a controller to do, and rather than just add some new lights (or those fans), they took a few good steps forward.<br />
	<br />
	The analogue sticks and D-pads are fully removable and customizable, and the controller comes with all sorts of possibilities. With this controller, you can implement the layout you want.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/17/mad-catz-shows-off-mlg-pro-controller-at-ces-for-the-discerning/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mad Catz shows off MLG Pro controller at CES, for the discerning button pusher</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/17/mad-catz-shows-off-mlg-pro-controller-at-ces-for-the-discerning/">Mad Catz shows off MLG Pro controller at CES, for the discerning button pusher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. OnLive CEO Steve Perlman promises a lot from his company's new cloud gaming apps for Android and iOS devices, but how does the app actually work? I've been able to play with the iPad version for the past few days, and using just the touchscreen it's far from perfect. While yes, the system does stream full live game audio and video to your device (which is impressive in itself), the controls are, frankly, a mess. OnLive's virtual controllers are just as janky as you'd imagine. In complex console games where you're using both joysticks and all of the buttons, it's playable but far from ideal.<br />
<br />
The wireless controller, on the other hand, really shows off what's possible with a service like this. Read on for impressions of using OnLive's new accessory with the iPad, as well as a full list of game compatibility on the service at launch.<br />

<br />
Despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/02/microsoft-presses-a-to-sue-datel-over-supposed-copycat-control/">Datel's storied history</a> with Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, the third-party peripheral manufacturer is once again throwing the dice with an unlicensed controller for the Xbox 360. And in true game industry fashion, the controller is a sequel. Dubbed the "Turbofire EVO Wireless Controller," the $55 pad advertises a ridiculously deep level of control customization, enabling users to map buttons, fine tune rumble strength, and even set rapid-fire speeds.<br />
<br />
More bizarrely, the customization is all handled via built-in LCD screen (which looks adorably like the Dreamcast's VMU, albeit modernized), though all the settings can be tweaked on a computer via USB plug. And like previous Datel products, this one seems to fly in the face of Microsoft regulation -- it's completely wireless and syncs with the Xbox 360 without the use of a dongle, which is a big no-no when creating products for Microsoft's console without a license.<br />
<br />
The Turbofire EVO costs $55 and is available right now from Datel. At least, it's available until Microsoft sues Datel again.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/turbofire-evo/">Turbofire EVO</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/turbofire-evo/#4487885"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/evo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/turbofire-evo/#4487886"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/evo-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/turbofire-evo/#4487887"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/evo-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/turbofire-evo/#4487888"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/evo-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/watch-your-back-dreamcast-vmu-here-comes-the-turbofire-evo/">Watch your back, Dreamcast VMU, here comes the Turbofire EVO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.evilcontrollers.com/">Evil Controllers</a>, a company that augments controllers by adding LED lights, d-pad upgrades, auto-fire and other extra capabilities, has announced a plan that we can't find <em>evil</em> no matter how much we look. It's working with the <a href="http://www.ablegamers.org/">AbleGamers Foundation</a> to design accessible peripherals for disabled gamers.<br />
<br />
The "Adroit" line of controllers is intended to enhance accessibility at an affordable cost. "The problem with equipment currently available to help the disabled community get into videogames is that it often costs way more than someone on disability can afford," AbleGamers.com EIC Steve Spohn said in the announcement. "These controllers will be higher quality with lower cost. What's not to love?"<br />
<br />
AbleGamers and Evil Controllers haven't released specifics about the Adroit line yet, mentioning only that it "
<meta charset="utf-8" />
will include all of the fan favorite features available on Evil Controllers mods". More information about the first releases will be divulged "within the next few weeks," according to the press release. In the meantime, feel free to be thoroughly <em>teased</em> by the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/adroit-controller-line-to-make-games-more-accessible/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Adroit' controller line to make games more accessible</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/adroit-controller-line-to-make-games-more-accessible/">'Adroit' controller line to make games more accessible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST. Players of the PC version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dungeon-siege-3"><em>Dungeon Siege 3</em></a> were <a href="http://games.kitguru.net/pc-gaming/pc-reviews/terry-franklin/dungeon-siege-3-review-pc/">disappointed</a> with the keyboard-and-mouse controls used in the game, generally deciding that using an Xbox 360 controller was the way to go. If you're one of those folks, lead designer Nathaniel Chapman says there's good news: Obsidian plans to release <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-21-better-dungeon-siege-3-pc-controls-soon">an update that will improve the traditional PC controls</a>. According to Chapman, better PC controls for the game is "one thing I would have liked to have spent more time on, and we are actually spending time on now."<br />
<br />
Chapman also hinted that Obsidian would like to have made "a more fleshed out tutorial system" and "more unique armor variants" for the game's four playable characters. But those will have to wait for future versions of the game: "It's always good sequel or DLC material," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/obsidian-plans-dungeon-siege-3-update-with-better-pc-controls/">Obsidian plans Dungeon Siege 3 update with better PC controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 02:00:00 EST. Peripheral maker Hori put a countdown page on its site leading to the reveal of an exciting mystery product ... and it's a new PS3 controller! Maybe the Hori Pad 3 Pro isn't the dramatic reveal we expected, but it looks like a pretty nice device.<br />
<br />
The Hori Pad 3 Pro builds on previous Hori controller offerings with a d-pad that can be rotated to provide the most comfortable position, as well as customizable d-pad input range. We don't really understand how that last one works, though it seems to involve setting the range between two directions at which a diagonal input is registered.<br />
<br />
It also features customizable analog stick sensitivity, three levels of turbo fire with a quick activation button on the back of the controller ... and, unfortunately, a wire. The Horipad Pro will be released in Japan on July 21. Odds are pretty good you'll be able to get one soon after; Amazon stocks previous <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=horipad+3&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">Hori Pad variants</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/21/new-hori-ps3-controller-has-rotating-d-pad-so-many-other-option/">New Hori PS3 controller has rotating D-pad, so many other options</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. Duke Nukem <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever">returned</a> this week, and is basically obsolete. Now, in honor of the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/halo-combat-evolved-anniversary"><em>Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary</em></a> remake, 343 Industries is considering resurrecting another long-dead Duke: the hulking, maligned original Xbox controller.<br />
<br />
Producer Alison Stroll told Giant Bomb that the studio is talking with expert modders (your Ben Heck types) about producing some working Xbox 360 controllers in original "Duke" controller shells. They won't be mass-produced or anything -- if you want to get your hands almost all the way around one, the controllers are planned to be hooked up to demo units at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/halo-fest-set-to-take-place-during-pax-prime-2011/">Halo Fest</a> being held in Seattle alongside PAX, and then sold at the annual Child's Play auction.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/original-xbox-controller-may-return-for-halo-anniversary-demos/">Original Xbox controller may return for Halo Anniversary demos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 00:01:00 EST. We'll have a full writeup for you as the day goes on, but we figured you might wanna take a closer look at the pseudo-tablet <em>right now</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/">Wii U Controller (E3 2011 - Hardware)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/#4201901"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/nfstherunwiiuhw6765_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/#4201902"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/nfstherunwiiuhw6766_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/#4201903"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/nfstherunwiiuhw6767_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/#4201942"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/wiiuhw6765_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-u-controller-e3-2011-hardware/#4201944"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/wiiuhw6766_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/take-a-closer-look-at-the-wii-us-crazy-controller/">Take a closer look at the Wii U's crazy controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 14:25:00 EST. You can play games solely on the controller, which handles like a tablet and presumably includes the stylus we saw interacting with it during the reveal. It's got a 6.2 inch screen, is backward compatible with all Wii games, Wii Remotes and other accessories -- a video showed showed it being used with the Balance Board and as a Wii Remote, so it's got motion controls built in. An example during the reveal showed an individual using it in a golf game, just like a Wiimote.<br />
<br />
It's got rumble, trigger buttons, bumper buttons, a touch-screen, microphone and speakers, and an accelerometer. It's also got a camera built in. Iwata says it's got support for the "widest variety of games can be supported" and can play games independently of the Wii itself. Oh, and it's HD.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/wii-u-controller-revealed/">Wii U controller revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 12:46:00 EST. Where does he get those wonderful toys? From any retailer that carries Power A controllers, this fall. The peripheral manufacturer has announced a <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-city"><em>Batman: Arkham City</em></a>-themed "Batarang" controller for both Xbox 360 and PS3, which allows you to pretend you're playing games on the specialized Bat-style game console you <em>know</em> Batman keeps in the cave.<br />
<br />
Both versions feature LED accents, that can light up in seven different colors. The <a href="http://www.powera.com/products/details/772">PS3 version</a> is wireless (with a receiver), with an internal rechargeable battery and motion sensors, and reversed analog stick placement. The <a href="http://www.powera.com/products/details/773">Xbox version</a> is wired, but comes with a 10-foot-long cable that may or may not allow the device to be used as a grappling hook.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/power-a-batarang-controllers/">Power A Batarang Controllers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/power-a-batarang-controllers/#4187627"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/batarang6303_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/power-a-batarang-controllers/#4187634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/batarang6310_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/power-a-batarang-controllers/#4187636"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/batarang6312_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/the-batarang-controllers-you-deserve-but-not-the-ones-you-need/">The Batarang controllers you deserve, but not the ones you need</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 12:45:00 EST. Some purported new information about the still-unannounced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-cafe">Wii successor</a> paints a surprisingly specific picture of the device's controller. <a href="http://kotaku.com/#!5794424/fresh-details-of-wii-2s-unusual-controller-and-why-it-wont-kill-the-wii-remote">Kotaku</a> reports that, according to unnamed sources, the controller for the "Project Cafe" device will have eight buttons, two analog sticks, a camera ... and an <em>enormous</em> 6.2" touchscreen.<br />
<br />
For reference, the DSi XL has 4.2" screens. The <em>Kindle</em> has a 6" screen. If these rumors are true, this controller will likely be crazy expensive. We honestly can't see Nintendo getting away with selling $200+ controllers.<br />
<br />
Kotaku also reports that this won't be the only accepted control method. "Project Cafe" will also reportedly support "Wii Remote-style controllers," the site says, though it's currently unknown whether that means the existing Wiimote or a new motion device.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/rumor-wii-successor-has-controller-with-giant-touchscreen-also/">Rumor: Wii successor has controller with giant touchscreen, also uses motion controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 15:20:00 EST. The towering pile of rumors regarding Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/rumor-multiple-sources-claim-new-nintendo-console-reveal-at-o/">next generation console</a>, supposedly to be announced at E3, continues to grow today with a report from <a href="http://www.01net.com/editorial/531660/project-cafe-la-wii-2-de-nintendo-aura-une-tablette-pour-manette/">French news site 01net</a> (which <a href="http://translate.google.fr/translate?js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=fr&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;layout=2&amp;eotf=1&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.01net.com%2Feditorial%2F527269%2Fdecouvrez-la-configuration-de-la-psp-2-en-avant-premiere%2F&amp;act=url">divined the hardware specs</a> of the NGP before its official unveiling). Citing unnamed sources, the site claims the system is currently codenamed "Project Caf&eacute;," and adds that it does feature hardware resembling that of the Xbox 360, such as a three-core IBM PowerPC CPU.<br />
<br />
The real meat of the report isn't in the specs of the console, but rather, its controller. According to 01net, the peripheral will feature a six-inch single-input touchscreen -- which corroborates a similar report published by <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/298241/news/wii-2-has-all-new-hd-controller-out-2012-sources/">CVG</a> yesterday. The French site also says the controller features a standard set of buttons, a front-mounted camera (what?) and can even function as a Wii sensor bar, should the player choose to indulge in the console's built-in backwards compatibility. That's actually pretty believable -- after all, the same effect can be achieved using a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/joystiq-video-candles-can-replace-wii-sensor-bar/"><em>pair of candles</em></a>.<br />
<br />
We'll keep an ear to the ground for any additional reports of a touchscreen-infused remote for the heavily rumored console. At the very least, we can be certain that over the course of the next few nights, visions of <em>Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles</em> and <em>Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures</em> will be dancing through our heads.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/15/rumor-wii-2-codenamed-project-cafe-controller-includes-built-i/">Rumor: Wii 2 codenamed Project Cafe, controller includes built-in touchscreen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Apr 2011 13:00:00 EST. The chances that the PlayStation 4 will ship with a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move">Move</a>-like motion controller instead of traditional gamepad got a little slimmer, thanks to an interview with Sony R&amp;D wizard <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/richard-marks">Dr. Richard Marks</a>. "I said that pretty much from the beginning that we're not trying to get rid of the gamepad," he <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6307/meet_the_man_behind_the_move.php?page=1">told Gamasutra</a>, saying of the idea that Sony might go motion-only for PS4: "I don't think that makes sense."<br />
<br />
"The gamepad is a really good abstract device," Marks explained. "It can map to so many different things. It doesn't map one-to-one to those things, but it doesn't need to for a lot of game experiences."<br />
<br />
Of course, Marks is no doubt tinkering on some future iteration of the Move technology, but there's one gameplay interface he apparently has no interest in exploring: brain waves. "I think the brain interface thing is too far," he admitted when the topic was broached. "When you play some of the experiences like <em>Rock Band</em> where you break into a sweat playing the drums, those things are good. I like those things. I don't want to remove all of that."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/playstation-move-creator-suggests-sony-wont-abandon-traditional/">PlayStation Move creator suggests Sony won't abandon traditional controllers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 20:10:00 EST. The solution found after the break for using an NES controller with <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/reckless-racing-hd/id386237505?mt=8"><em>Reckless Racing</em></a> on the iPad is more mechanical than anything -- it attaches the boxy gamepad to a series of robotic fingers that interact with the iPad's capacitive touchscreen. But that doesn't make it any less awesome.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/hack-connects-nes-controller-to-ipad-using-robo-fingers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hack connects NES controller to iPad using robo-fingers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/hack-connects-nes-controller-to-ipad-using-robo-fingers/">Hack connects NES controller to iPad using robo-fingers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 06:10:00 EST. If the upcoming Mad Catz <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/marvel-vs-capcom-3-fightsticks-shipping-in-time-for-the-game/"><em>Marvel vs. Capcom 3</em> Fight Sticks</a> are a little too intimidating for you, Marvel and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pdp">PDP</a> have cooked up a much more diminutive option. The Marvel Edition Versus Fighting Pad comes packed with love-it-hate-it Marvel artwork, an arcade button layout and an elongated left ... erm ... prong(?) for more ergonomic digital pugilism. Furthermore, both the buttons and specially designed thumb pad operate using actual microswitch actuators -- the same kind you'd find in a real arcade cabinet.<br />
<br />
The Versus pad is <a href="http://www.pdp.com/p-984-versus-fighting-pad-marvel-edition-presale.aspx">available for pre-order</a> for $40 and is expected to arrive on February 14, making it the perfect last minute Valentine's Day gift for the nerd in your life. Only the Xbox 360 version of the pad has been announced, though a PS3 version may be released if the 360 pad does well. Check out an in-depth video of the Versus in action after the break.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/take-an-elongated-look-at-pdps-mvc3-versus-fighting-pad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Take an elongated look at PDP's Marvel Versus Fighting Pad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/take-an-elongated-look-at-pdps-mvc3-versus-fighting-pad/">Take an elongated look at PDP's Marvel Versus Fighting Pad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 17:50:00 EST. Typing on an Xbox controller is not ideal. Sure, you can get a Chat Pad, but what if there were another way? CircBoard has an interesting alternative, using the left and right analog sticks in conjunction. It's conceptually easy to understand, but are you willing to give it a try?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/circboard-offers-an-interesting-approach-to-typing-on-an-xbox/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CircBoard offers an interesting approach to typing on an Xbox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/circboard-offers-an-interesting-approach-to-typing-on-an-xbox/">CircBoard offers an interesting approach to typing on an Xbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 05 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. Should you find yourself of the opinion that your Xbox 360 controller isn't precise or extreme enough, then please pay particular attention to the following sentence: <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/razer">Razer</a> has announced that its Onza line of Xbox 360 controllers will be available for pre-order beginning January 17. The <a href="http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.218523900/categoryId.54297600">standard Onza</a>, featuring backlit "Hyperesponse" face buttons, an improved d-pad and two extra programmable shoulder buttons, was actually announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/razer-wants-cut-of-xbox-360-peripheral-business/">way back in 2010</a>.<br />
<br />
Now the company has also revealed the <a href="http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.218524000/categoryId.54297600">Onza Tournament Edition</a>, which includes all the "standard" features plus analog sticks with adjustable resistance. Both controllers are also wired because, you know, lag is for <em>jerks</em>. The standard Onza will sell for $40, while the Tournament Edition will set back the <em>real</em> professionals $50.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/">Razer Onza 360 controllers (1/6/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/#3752940"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/rzronzabackvrgbwhtbg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/#3752941"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/rzronzafrntvrgbwhtbg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/#3752942"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/rzronzaleftvrgbwhtbg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/#3752943"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/rzronzarightvrgbwhtbg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/razer-onza-360-controllers-1-6-10/#3752944"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/rzronzatebackvrgbwhtbg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/razer-bringing-onza-professional-controllers-to-360/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Razer bringing Onza 'professional' controllers to 360</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/razer-bringing-onza-professional-controllers-to-360/">Razer bringing Onza 'professional' controllers to 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 23:00:00 EST.
