Attending <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2011">PAX East 2011</a>? There's an app for that. Proxima Labs' <a href="http://conventionist.com/">Conventionist</a>, an app designed expressly for staying organized during conventions, has been updated with a guide to PAX East's panels, exhibitors and pretty much anything you'd need to know about the show.<br />
<br />
The app for free for iOS and Android, and has some handy features, such as reminder messages (so you don't miss panels) and maps (so you know where they'll be). It sounds pretty indispensable. Might we suggest adding <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/joystiq-blueberry-muffin-tops-breakfast-at-pax-east-part-2-blue/">the Joystiq Blueberry Muffin Tops Breakfast</a> once you've downloaded it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/04/pax-east-guides-added-to-free-ios-and-android-convention-app/">PAX East guides added to free iOS and Android convention app</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 01:00:00 EST. Are you in the process of packing the items necessary for survival during your upcoming trip to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2010">Penny Arcade Expo</a>? You might want to consider adding Proxima Labs' "<a href="http://proximalabs.com/projects/conventionist/">The Conventionist</a>" to your list. The free iPhone app includes a full, interactive schedule for each day of the expo, a map of the convention center and the ability to browse through both while offline. Which is fortunate, since large crowds of tech-savvy people have a tendency to <em>wreck</em> your phone's 3G functionality.<br />
<br />
Best of all, the app can be updated to provide support for other conventions as well. We sure hope the the 2010 Des Moines Apple Butter Festival makes the cut! We always get lost between the cider mill and the ol' birch tree.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/grab-the-free-conventionist-app-perfect-for-pax-navigation/">Grab the free Conventionist app, perfect for PAX navigation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 00:00:00 EST. That's where <a href="http://www.geexshow.com/">the Gaming and Electronics Expo (GEEX)</a> is being held this coming weekend. With a 27-hour LAN party, <a href="http://www.geexshow.com/blog/">tournaments and exhibits all weekend long</a>, and over 15,000 attendees expected, it sounds like Sandy, Utah (just south of SLC) will be rocking it.<br />
<br />
If you're going to be around, <a href="http://www.geexshow.com/details.php">tickets are still available</a>, and for $18 with a $5 discount online, they're one of the cheapest show passes you can still find for sale this summer. <a href="http://www.geexshow.com/exhibits.php">The exhibitor list</a> isn't <em>quite</em> as big as PAX, and <a href="http://geexshow.com/speakers.php">the speakers</a> aren't quite as star-studded as Comic-Con, but if you live in Utah, you should probably take what you can get and enjoy yourself anyway, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/gaming-and-electronics-expo-in-salt-lake-city-this-weekend/">Gaming and Electronics Expo in Salt Lake City this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Jul 2010 03:15:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc2010">GDC 2010</a> is the hotness this week, but according to Microsoft's Mindy Mount (<a href="http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/107/1075174p1.html">speaking at a tech conference in NYC</a>), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2010">E3</a> should be fun this year, too. As you might expect, Microsoft is bringing "the full lineup" of Project Natal titles to <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">the convention</a> in June.<br />
<br />
We know there are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/12/bach-70-80-of-publishers-working-on-natal-based-games/">a whole bunch of developers</a> working on Natal titles, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/ea-sports-already-working-on-active-for-natal-ps3-motion-control/">EA</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/13/capcom-updating-old-brand-for-natal-not-treating-it-as-a-gimmi/">Capcom</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/19/forza-motorsport-dev-working-with-natal-tech/"><em>Forza Motorport</em>'s Turn 10</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/microsofts-spawnpoint-studios-working-on-natal-launch-title/">SpawnPoint Studios</a>. Mount promises that Microsoft is "putting some of our best people on coming up with great game ideas for this, and we're going to have some great stuff." We'll start working out now to make sure we have enough stamina to flail our limbs<em> </em>all week long.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/microsoft-bringing-the-full-lineup-of-natal-titles-to-e3/">Microsoft bringing 'the full lineup' of Natal titles to E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 02:00:00 EST. Do you live smack in the middle of Virginia and thirst for a gaming event to kick off the second decade of the 21st century (we're almost at flying cars, people!)? <a href="http://magfest.org/">MAGfest</a> seeks to fulfill that desire with it's annual video game festival. The show's organizers pledge to entertain you with everything from a 10,000-square-foot game room to a 24-hour "JamSpace" room (we assume that's different from a JellySpace room). Tickets are $40 for the weekend (Jan. 1-4) and pre-registration has already begun, which includes admission to each evening's gaming themed concerts, including a New Year's Eve party.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/magfest-game-and-music-festival-rings-in-the-new-year/">MAGfest game &amp; music festival rings in the new year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 22:30:00 EST. We're a bit wary of more convention-style events in the already event-filled year, but the <a href="http://expo.eurogamer.net/whats-on.php">Eurogamer Expo</a> this year is promising something we've yet to do at any convention before -- get our hands on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassins-creed-2"><em>Assassin's Creed 2</em></a> before its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/assassins-creed-2-launches-november-17/">November release</a>. Taking place in both Leeds and London (October 27/28 and 30/31, respectively), attendees will be treated to a smattering of playable titles from a handful of major publishers.<br /><br />Though we might argue that the show could come a bit earlier in the year -- didn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/E4All/"><em>that other</em> convention in October</a> not do so well? -- a chance to play a mess of major holiday releases early sounds perfectly fine to us. Microsoft, Sony, Capcom, EA and a few others will be there, so for our friends across the pond who can't make it all the way to PAX, this seems like your best bet. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/">Assassin's Creed II</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#1485933"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/eziohighres1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_ca_001_carnival-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_ca_012_sanmarcoplacevenice-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_s_004-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_s_018-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/major-publishers-backs-eurogamer-expo">GamesIndustry.biz</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/assassins-creed-2-playable-at-eurogamer-expo-major-publishers/">Assassin's Creed 2 playable at Eurogamer Expo, major publishers backing show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 14:00:00 EST. Nothing more clearly shows the new relationship forged by Zenimax Media between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">id Software and Bethesda Softworks</a> than <a href="http://forums.quakecon.org/showthread.php?t=12783">this year's QuakeCon lineup</a>. Littered with little extras like an hour-long presentation by Bethesda's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/todd-howard">Todd Howard</a> and the first public demonstration of Splash Damage's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brink"><em>Brink</em></a>, QuakeCon 2009 is clearly accommodating some new faces.<br /><br />That being said, id Software's John Carmack will be giving this year's keynote speech, and the event is still very much PC-centric, with Alienware, NVIDA and Ventrilo hosting a handful of events. Upcoming post-apocalyptic, <em>not-Mad Max</em> FPS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> will also be getting its first public demo at the show, further asserting id Software into the event. For those of you attending, we encourage hounding Todd Howard for information on the next <em>Elder Scrolls</em> game during his Q&amp;A -- if not for us, <em>do it for the kids</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/09/quakecon-2009-detailed-first-public-demos-of-rage-and-brink/">QuakeCon 2009 detailed, first public demos of Rage and Brink</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Aug 2009 21:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eforallexpo.com/">E for All</a> remains the ghostly and distant third cousin of the previous mammoth version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3">E3</a> that's open to the public, and it takes place inside the carcass of that fearsome beast, the Los Angeles Convention Center. While we misjudged the time and arrived two hours early, that gives us plenty of time to peruse the schedule and pick our poison.<br /> <br /> So far the highlights include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>A treadmill race across Azeroth</li>
    <li>Meet and greet with Billy Mitchell</li>
    <li>Samples of <a href="http://www.gamergrub.com/">Gamer Grub</a>, snacks developed for gamers</li>
    <li>Hands-on with Ubisoft's <em>Far Cry 2, Tom Clancy's End War, Shaun White Snowboarding,</em> and Activision's <em>Guitar Hero World Tour</em></li>
    <li>Putting our butt in a <a href="http://www.boomchair.com/">Boom Chair</a><br /></li>
    <li>And the... Los Angeles Unified School District? "Participating students will obtain a deeper understanding of video games and how they can be incorporated into their future careers from speakers - including Fatal1ty - who will describe their experience with video games and ways to break into the industry." Run kids, run.</li>

During the interview, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=201297">O'Connor stated that a "HaloCon"</a> (that's <em>Halo</em> Convention, for the contextually impaired) is a definite possibility, adding, "Bungie has done fanfests at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008/">E3</a> and it would be lovely to see something bigger, something more ambitious in the future." In addition, we figure a <em>Halo</em>-based expo would also prove an appropriate time to follow through on certain... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/bungie-net-countdown-tells-us-to-calm-down-keep-it-clean/"><em>engagements</em></a>.<br /><br />Eurogamer did not let <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/bungie-e3-game-announcement-pulled-by-publisher/">Bungie's seized E3 announcement</a> go unmentioned, and O'Connor responded with an uncrushed spirit, explaining that "someone, somewhere decided strategically that another time is better, and it will be, and there's going to be an announcement and it's going to be awesome." This could mean that they actually know when they'll be following through on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/surprise-mattrick-says-bungie-working-on-new-halo-game/">their promised E3 megaton</a>, and (if you can wrap your mind around this) -- that they've yet to announce when they're going to announce what they're going to announce.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/microsofts-frank-oconnor-hints-at-halocon-comments-on-bung/">Microsoft's Frank O'Connor hints at 'HaloCon', comments on 'Bungiegate'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. If there was any question as to the fate of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/e3-1995-2007-a-retrospective/">the spectacle that was E3</a>, a quick visit Monday afternoon to the LA Convention Center seemed to confirm the show's demise. Oh sure, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">E3 may live on in name</a>, but where years past would have found the convention center papered by now in gaudy banners promoting the year's biggest titles and deepest pockets, 2008 instead finds the halls exhibiting all the life of a George Romero set piece without the visceral afterglow. <br /><br />Even so, we do look forward to see what the show has in store for us when it <em>officially </em>kicks off later today. After all, we're not total pessimists. Yet.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/">Joystiq @ E3 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/#920842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/e3_2008_vacant_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/#920841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/e3_2008_vacant_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/#920840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/e3_2008_vacant_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/#920839"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/e3_2008_vacant_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/joystiq-e3-2008/#917935"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dscf5419_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Our first brew ..." title="Our first brew ..." /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/welcome-to-e3-2008-now-with-less-magic/">Welcome to E3 2008, now with less magic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 00:30:00 EST. Then head on over to California and go to this year's Anime Expo. Not only will you get to play this gem of a game, but the entire DS Fanboy staff will envy you for your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/gdc08-hands-on-with-bangai-o-spirits/">hands-on</a> <em>Bangai-O </em>experience.<br />
<br />
Another DS game that will be playable is, of course, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/06/play-naruto-path-of-the-ninja-2-in-french/"><em>Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2</em></a>. Would you really expect the orange-clad Ninja not to make an appearance? So, if you plan to stop by the Expo, make sure to check out D3 Publisher's booth (901) for some fun times on the DS.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/yet-more-cosplay/">Cosplayers</a> are perpetual purveyors of entertainment. Die-hard fans never miss a chance to dress up, while some fans would rather die. Some do it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/female-duo-sets-the-standard-for-link-cosplay/">so well</a> that everyone becomes a fan, if only for a moment. Anyone grossly offended by the glory of cosplay should look away now (we're kidding, keep reading), as we present the new Guiness World Record for "Most Video Game Costumes in One Place."<br /><br />It is estimated over 600 fans showed up to <a href="http://a-kon.com/">A-Kon 2008</a> dressed in video game attire, easily besting the previous "record" of 80 Marios. Characters from all walks of Nintendo life were found at A-Kon, and we've gathered a few of the best to check out after the break. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/twilight-princess-cosplay-leaves-us-agog/">Cosplay done right</a> looks rad.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/send-in-the-cosplayers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Send in the cosplayers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/send-in-the-cosplayers/">Send in the cosplayers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 21:00:00 EST. European Nintendo fans eager to attend the biggest gaming show in all of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/europe">Europe</a>, take note. Nintendo has decided not to attend this year's show. Considering they had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/25/lgc-wrap-up-how-did-the-ds-do/">a great show</a> last year, we honestly can't understand why Nintendo would back out. Their new focus will be to participate in "smaller, local events and national promotional tours."<br /><br />Any of our European readers saddened by this news? Were you planning on attending the show in Germany this year?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://nintendo-revolution.blogspot.com/2008/05/nintendo-not-present-at-games.html">Nintendo Revolution</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/nintendo-pulls-out-of-leipzig/">Nintendo pulls out of Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. Going to the science museum? Boring. Going to the science museum to play video games? Excellent! At least that's what we took away from an <em><a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"><em>Orlando Sentinel</em></a></em><a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"> article</a> on<em> </em>The Orlando Science Center's third annual <a href="http://www.otronicon.org/">Otronicon gaming event</a>.<br /><br />The conference, which just closed to the public, brought in a record 3,000 game players on Saturday as part of an expected 18,000 attendees total. The throng did more than just play over 100 displayed games, though -- they attended exhibits focused on the therapeutic benefits of gaming, workshops on game development and even performances by the Orlando Magic dancers (the last of which we can only assume was somehow game-related).<br /><br />Though the event is now closed to the public, some lucky youngsters will get to attend school field trips to the event over the next few days, which makes us extremely jealous. The best field trip we took in grade school was to the box factory. Or was that <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_Gets_Famous">The Simpsons</a></em>? We can't remember, honestly.<a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/orlando-museum-attracts-record-numbers-with-gaming-convention/">Orlando museum attracts record numbers with gaming convention</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. Having broken out of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mii">Mii channel's</a> sterile confines, these characters were spotted at Canada's Anime North convention last May. One can only imagine what costumed horrors the blue-shirted Mii was subjected to that would leave his face in a permanent state of fright -- a heavyset guy with a ZZ Top beard dressed as Sailor Moon? Or a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cduxO2EYQrM">muscly Batman</a> gyrating in a pair of speedos? Check past the post break for another photo of these two Miis hamming it up for the camera.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/03/mii-city-population-these-guys/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mii City, Population: These Guys</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/03/mii-city-population-these-guys/">Mii City, Population: These Guys</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 Jun 2007 11:00:00 EST. The video game trade show hasn't made much of an effort to include Nintendo in the past, as the company stuck to the Space World expo and its own events to make announcements. But with the Wii's current momentum and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dragonquest"><em>Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Sky</em></a> set to appear on the Nintendo DS, leaving Nintendo out of TGS just doesn't make sense.<br />
<br />
Wired's Chris Kohler has an interesting post on how Nintendo's attendance at the September event will affect the console market in <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/japan">Japan</a> and what the company might present at the convention. Playable <em>DQIX</em> demos of seem given, but we're sure that Nintendo has a lot more planned for the biggest dedicated video game show in Japan. What games and announcements are you looking forward to hearing about?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/nintendo-at-tokyo-game-show-2007/">Nintendo at Tokyo Game Show 2007?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2007 11:00:00 EST. We know that those serving in Iraq tend to be big on first-person shooters like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/01/weapon-of-mass-distraction-halo-3-spotted-in-iraq/">Halo</a></em> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Dark_Forces"><em>Star Wars: Dark Forces</em></a>, but what about Army gamers whose tastes run a little more cerebral? For them, <a href="http://www.gamegrene.com/node/790">Ziggurat Con</a> will provide the opportunity to blow off some steam with a day of good, old-fashioned tabletop role-playing.<br /><br />Described as "the very first D&amp;D convention/game day ever held in a war zone," Ziggurat Con will give soldiers "a place where we can go somewhere far away from the IED's, mortar attacks, and gunfire, without ever leaving the safety of our camp," said Con organizer David Amberson. The Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase Community Activity Center will become a role-playing and anime-watching paradise for nine hours on June 9, with the blessing of the Army's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department.<br /><br />Many game manufacturers have agreed to donate materials for the gamers, but the scarcity of gaming stores in the greater Iraqi area may force attendees to share dice. It's true what they say ... war is hell.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/20/tabletop-gaming-con-comes-to-iraq/">Tabletop gaming con comes to Iraq</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 17:25:00 EST. They probably don't think of more local, personal affairs like the University of Rhode Island's annual gaming convention, which was held for the 16th time this weekend on the campus' Memorial Union.</p>
<p>This is perhaps understandable, as the University's <a href="http://media.www.ramcigar.com/media/storage/paper366/news/2007/02/27/News/Students.Get.Fill.Of.Anime.Video.Games.At.16th.Annual.Gaming.Convention.In.M.u-2744492.shtml">student paper</a> explains the event had somewhat limited attendance due to a lack of advertising. But it's also a shame, in a way, that more people couldn't be persuaded to get together for the con's <em>Guitar Hero II</em>, <em>Halo</em> and <em>Gears of War</em> tournaments.</p>
<p>We know college students play games -- hanging out with your buds and playing <em>Madden</em> or <em>Halo</em> all night is practically a rite of passage on most campuses. What we don't understand is why organized gaming clubs so often struggle to attract widespread interest on campuses that might have thriving clubs for everything from <a href="http://www.college-paintball.com/lists/collegelist.html">paintball</a> to <a href="http://www.thedenverchannel.com/education/11065995/detail.html">napping</a>. Despite the common casual interest, most students don't seem to see gaming as something to join together over in an organized club setting.</p>
<p>Or maybe our impressions are off. To our college readers out there: what's the gaming scene like on your campus? The Penny Arcade Expo will take place at the Washington State Trade and Convention Center. Previously held in Bellevue, PAX can thank the ESA canceling E3 for now making them the event of the year for the hardcore -- no fake press credentials required. Oh wait, there's the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/05/gamepro-expo-redubbed-e-for-all/">E for All Expo</a>, but we have no idea how that's going to play out.<br /><br />"We conservatively expect 30,000 hardcore gamers in Seattle this summer, making us the fastest- growing and largest gamer festival in North America" said Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade. "Exhibitors and attendees keep spreading the word about PAX; it's amazing, but attendance doubles each year."<br /><br />What we're really looking forward to is just seeing more of Penny Arcade's <em>On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness </em>game, which we're sure will have some announcement at the convention. You know the guys at IGN and Gamespy can't wait to <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/08/29">get their hands on it</a> for some sweet, sweet retribution.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/27/pax-07-set-for-aug-24-26-in-seattle/">PAX '07 set for Aug. 24-26 in Seattle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 27 Jan 2007 16:30:00 EST. Also on-hand at the show, according to <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18970">GamesIndustry.biz</a> is <em>Sonic Rivals</em>, the first ever original PSP platformer starring Sega's famous mascot. We just hope our love of the game(s) will stay with us as it has for Mr. Thomas, whether we're watching from home or working the show floor in person in post-apocalyptic L.A. The parties will be sure to be awesome.<br /><br /><strong>See also:</strong><br />
