Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update revealed: download Halo December 2

Official Xbox Magazine has the scoop on the Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update, and you better believe it's a doozy. UK-based CVG reports that the December 2 update will allow 360 owners to download and play Microsoft-published Xbox 1 games on their 360s.

Let's say that one more time: come December 2, you will be able to download full, original Xbox games to the Xbox 360. The initial list of available games includes Fable, Indigo Prophecy, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex, Burnout 3, and, of course, Halo: Combat Evolved.

Games will cost approximately 1200 Microsoft Points, or
$15 USD. Microsoft plans on re-releasing as many Xbox 1 titles as possible through Marketplace. Look out, Virtual Console.

Update: The CVG source has been removed, but Eurogamer has posted a similar report, dating the update for December 4th.

Crash of the Titans demo now on Live

It's Sept. 25, and you can feel it in your bones. You've waited long enough: It's time to finish the fight. And you know what that means -- it's time to start practicing your spinning and fruit collection. Yes, time to finish the fight between Crash Bandicoot and Dr. Neo Cortex, at least until the 15th Crash Bandicoot game comes out. ... Why do you look so sad? Did you think we were talking about someone else?

No, the fight that needs finishing today is Crash of the Titans and you can get a sample now with a new demo on Xbox Live. Had we played any Crash games in the past five years, we'd be happy to tell you what's new in this version. As it stands, we can offer only a hearty "Good luck."

Today's potential franchise relaunch video: Crash Bandicoot

Gameplay footage from Crash of the Titans held our interest for today's video pick. The upcoming Bandacoot adventure for all current platforms besides PS3 will be out this fall, and Crash fans may find a new title to love. (We're not talking about you, Action Pack.) Or is Crash looking a little too like The King for his own good?

See the new video after the break, and watch a longer GameTrailers developer interview, too.

New PSone games hit Japanese PlayStation Store

Sony has made a new batch of six PSone games available for download (and subsequent PSP play) from the PS3's Japanese PlayStation Store. As usual, all titles are priced at ¥525 (US$4.30). Two of the games released yesterday have already been available in North America for some time -- namely, Crash Bandicoot and Rally Cross -- but the remaining four titles are exclusive to Japan. They are:
  • A.I.V. Evolution Global (city railway management from Artdink)
  • Logic Mahjong (a mahjong game by Nippon Ichi)
  • Spectral Force (the first game in Idea Factory's strategy RPG series)
  • Vampire: Legend of the Bloodsuckers (an isometric action-RPG by Artdink)

Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability

super marioAs noted earlier, a list published by UK newspaper The Independent reveals what many already assume; Nintendo's Mario is the best-selling franchise of all time. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise Pokémon (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, Donkey Kong and Zelda. So what's Nintendo's secret?

Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.
