At those prices, you've got no reason not to buy one of these for your dearest friends and family. Especially family who writes for the same gaming news site as you, who let you borrow their copy of The World Ends With You in March, which you beat and then traded in, you thoughtless bastard.
If you're like us, you're ready for The Future of Digital Entertainment[TM] and want to get rid of all that silly, antiquated physical media still laying around the house. Square Enix loves bundling its PSP games with hardware. It's the company's way of single-handedly getting more systems into the wild so that more people will buy its next game -- and there's always a "next game." Strangely, these bundles tend to be more common in Japan and Europe, but not anymore. The PlayStation Blog has just announced that a Dissidia bundle is headed to the US of A, exclusive to Gamestop.

For $199.99 your new Dissidia bundle, available on August 25, will contain a copy of Dissidia, a copy of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a 2GB memory stick and a <strike>special branded Dissidia PSP-3000</strike>. Oh, wait -- it's just a bog standard Mystic Silver system. Where's the limited edition Dissidia unit that was available in Japan? Oh well, if Crisis Core is anything to go by, Europe will probably get it when it finally releases there in the year 2051.
Since the beginning of cinematic gaming, there has always been this struggle between balancing the experiences of both narrative and gameplay. For some games, there's too much traditional story-telling which detracts from this core gameplay fun factor (take PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4 for example) and other titles get a bad rap for having paper-thin plots. So how do these two seemingly opposed forces integrate smoothly? Christian Nutt has an interesting opinion piece about this on GameSetWatch which takes a look at Crisis Core's DMW system as an excellent solution to this "narrative-gameplay divide."

Nutt points out that the Digital Mind Wave (DMW) system revolves around the story-driven emotional state of Zack (protagonist), which in turn results in affecting his chances for bonuses and his overall performance in battle. Furthermore, the DMW's slots reflect important characters in Zack's life which, when aligned, often play cut scene memories in the heat of a fight. What this does, according to Nutt, creates a reminder of how important the story is to the actions Zack carries out. This style of integrating stories, focusing on memories and short bursts, while maximizing both emotional impact and interactivity is revolutionary in Nutt's eyes.

A lot of his points make a whole lot of sense and we agree, though perhaps not as fervently. But what about you? Do you agree, disagree? Perhaps before you make that decision, best read up on the entire Crisis Core redefines narrative/gameplay article.
Opinion piece says Crisis Core blends gameplay, narrative in revolutionary ways originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Those would be "Gold" awards in Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's annual PlayStation Awards, not actual gold PlayStations. No, we think excellent sales are reward enough to render the composition of a congratulatory gong irrelevant -- the Gold award only goes to those games that sold over 500,000 copies in Japan over the last year.

This year's PlayStation recipients: Senior citizen stealth sim Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots; pointy-haired sword swinger Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII; and Sega's Phantasy Star Portable, which we failed to include in the headline. Similarly snubbed but given a fancy "Platinum" award was Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold over two million copies and completely messed up our Japanese hardware sales charts.
According to MTV Germany's 2008 Game Awards show, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is this year's best handheld title (AKA, "The Whole World in Your Pocket" Award). The Square Enix game that prequels the popular PSOne title, Final Fantasy VII, beat out other franchise software such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Guitar Hero: On Tour.

It even had beaten Patapon to a pulp -- which was an all new, original title that came out this year. Overall, Crisis Core overcame some tough odds beating out strong competition. Congrats go out to you Crisis Core.
MTV: Crisis Core is 'The whole world in your pocket' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 08:30:00 EST. The PSP-exclusive prequel to Final Fantasy VII has made quite a bit of dough for Square Enix, as the company revealed updated sales numbers for the game. Since its release, it has seen nearly 2 million units sold across the world, with Japan buying the largest amount: 820k units. North America resulted in 610k sales, and Europe is responsible for 460k.

The strong figures for Crisis Core may be why Square Enix has such a strong lineup of games planned for PSP. Compared to their DS games (Final Fantasy IV) and Wii games (Dragon Quest Swords), Crisis Core has easily resonated the most with its audience.

[Via NeoGAF]
Crisis Core inches towards 2 million sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:56:00 EST. With third-party PSP support dwindling and becoming increasingly coveted -- even by Sony's own Shuhei Yoshida -- it seems that a new plan of action is in order for the high-tech, twice-revised handheld. Speaking to Edge Online, SCEA's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, provided just such a strategy: "You cannot have ports."

Sony hopes to guide publishers and developers down a better path, enabling them to produce PSP games that take a cue from their console versions, but leave the identical content and gameplay behind. "The recipe for success on the PSP resides simply in providing franchise games that are strong brand names like on consoles, but have unique gameplay on the system," said Koller, listing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, God of War: Chains of Olympus and the forthcoming Midnight Club as titles that stand on their own, despite their recognized branding.

Koller went on to predict that 2009 would see "significant growth" for the PSP, with "a number of very strong franchise games" on the way and revitalized hardware sales bringing publishers back from the brink. And who knows? Maybe those persistent petitioners will finally get their Assassin's Creed PSP game.
Sony's new PSP strategy: 'You cannot have ports.' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 18:00:00 EST. Square Enix is releasing a Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII PSP bundle for Europe to coincide with its June 20 release. The bundle includes a PSP Slim with the above art and a copy of the game for 189,90 Euros (US $293.43). According to Amazon France, if you bought a PSP Slim (169,20 Euros) and Crisis Core (36,99 Euros) separately, it'd cost you 20,70 Euros (US $32) more, so it's definitely a good deal to pick up the bundle (assuming, of course, you don't already have a PSP).

Fun fact: When the title finally reaches Europe, it will have been over 9 months since the Japanese launch and 3 months since the North American debut.
Crisis Core PSP bundle heads to Europe June 20 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 12:06:00 EST. The limited edition Final Fantasy VII silver PSP is leaving Japan, and going to Europe, just in time for Crisis Core's release. A special bundle, which includes this engraved PSP and a copy of the PSP-exclusive action RPG, will hit European retailers on June 20th for 189.99 Euros.

Combined with a special edition version of the game, Square Enix is trying its hardest to make up for the delayed release over the Atlantic. For many jealous fans in the US, it looks like they're succeeding.
After enjoying Amazon's Xbox 360 deals yesterday, it is with much dismay that we report the online retailer is throwing yet another wallet-busting offer our way, this time for our oft-neglected Sony PSP. The very awesome (if you don't believe us, ask the podcast) Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is today's Gold Box deal, down from $40 to $26. Unlike yesterday's lightning deals, though, you have all day to order a copy. If tomorrow brings another video game bundle, we may very well go broke. Oh, Amazon, why do you curse our bank accounts so!
Today's Amazon Gold Box deal: Crisis Core for $26 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. As usual, Square Enix took their time localizing a game to Europe. Crisis Core, the exciting PSP-exclusive prequel to Final Fantasy VII, is finally coming to Europe in June. Of course, the delay may be worth it for those picking up the Special Edition version of the game (pictured, above).

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. commented in the press release, "CRISIS CORE -FINAL FANTASY VII- is one of the most anticipated FINAL FANTASY releases of all times. Pushing the boundaries of the PSP hardware, it offers a truly fantastic gameplay experience to not only existing fans, but new ones as well."
It may be a mere handheld game, but Crisis Core serves as a vital part of the Final Fantasy VII universe. It doesn't just simply expand upon the story, but actually fixes an error made in a different part of the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII."

Hideki Imaizumi, producer of Crisis Core, talked about the "Last Order" anime OVA (pictured) with IGN. Released as a bonus with Advent Children in Japan, the animated short also focused on Zack and the role he played in Nibelheim. "When we made that feature, we changed the presentation of that event from the original Final Fantasy VII. And the fan response was - well, there was considerable negative feedback in regard to changing a part of the story that they considered integral to the whole lore."

Thankfully, Crisis Core was able to set things straight, restoring the canon that so many Final Fantasy VII devotees pore over. "So we listened to that and learned from that. And in fact the Nibelheim incident is presented again in Crisis Core, and we were careful not to make the same decisions that we did in Last Order."
How Crisis Core fixed Final Fantasy VII canon originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 14:30:00 EST. Square Enix is a firm supporter of both handhelds, with a number of great titles available on both Sony PSP and Nintendo DS. However, why was (arguably) their biggest game developed exclusively for PSP, instead of the more-popular DS? Pocket Gamer talked to producer Hideki Imaizumi and executive producer Yoshinori Kitase about exactly that: "Yes, there are a lot of DSs out there - but does that mean that our products sell in relation to that? That our sales grow with how many DSs or PSPs there are out there? It's not really the case."

The PSP seemed appropriate for a number a reasons, one being the more adult age group the PSP seems to attract: "the demographic was higher teens to young adults as opposed to small children. The PSP seemed closer to that demographic than DS in general. So we feel we really made the right choice."

As a joke, he added "We'll make a DS game called Brain Age: Final Fantasy for DS [laughs]." To be honest, we wouldn't mind trying that out.
Why Crisis Core is on PSP, not DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST. We've caught wind of a short interview with the game's director, Hajime Tabata, and what his thoughts are on some random bits of the game, as well as any future plans he has or would like to get involved in.

Tabata uses past influences to generate his ideas, citing the Japanese comic "Doraemon" specifically as an influence. Unlike Zack, Tabata claims he could probably only do 50 squats in succession and unlike Sephiroth, uses less than a bottle of shampoo per shower. Yep. It's that kind of interview.

He also says he would not be interested in working on spin-off titles for other Final Fantasy games -- only the world in VII seems to interest him. Tabata said that, if anything, he'd like to create a gun-action game in the VII world with a new character who uses both guns and magic. Like Dirge of Cerberus, but less horrible. Currently, Tabata is working on Agito XIII as well as some other unnamed titles. Maybe he'll get his wish someday!
Interview with Crisis Core's Tabata describes hopes, aspirations originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 13:00:00 EST. Ryoga Vee was kind enough to take pictures during the Crisis Core launch event in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the cosplayers stayed home, with nary an over-dramatic hairdo to be seen. Thanks to these two for dressing up and making us proud.

According to Ryoga, the premiere was an "inflated event just to buy the game. No frills, no glam like the other events in the past."
Or Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, depending on who you ask. It seems the two sub-titles have every reason to dance around the colon, as reviews label Crisis Core as an excellent PSP adventure and better still, the one part of the Final Fantasy VII <strike>whoring</strike> compilation that everyone can agree to like. Aside from the initially confusing "Digital Mind Wave" system (a slot machine that randomly bestows bonuses in battle) and an infamous "stealth" section (which nearly every review moans about), Square Enix's portable prequel draws few major complaints and loads of nostalgia.

On the brand new Square Enix members site, Crisis Core's director Hajime Tabata noted that they couldn't fit everything they wanted on the limited size of a UMD disc. "In regards to the story, due to schedule and [UMD] memory concerns, a good deal of it ended up on the cutting room floor. Originally, the episodes were much more detailed. We also considered implementing a multiplayer competitive/cooperative mode using the PSP network function, but again, this wasn't realized due to scheduling concerns."

This being Square Enix, of course, we wouldn't be surprised if they ever released a "Director's Cut" version of Crisis Core, which adds all these features that were removed. Sadly, fans like us will have no choice but to buy the game (again!).

Another addition made to the Square Enix website is this frustrating mini-game. Check it out after the cut.
Continue reading Help Zack do squats, get Crisis Core wallpaper

Help Zack do squats, get Crisis Core wallpaper originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Mar 2008 12:30:00 EST. Watching this trailer may embed some niggling questions in your mind -- questions like: Is it safe to run on top of trains? Why does Cloud have black hair? Who at Square Enix decided that story-rich fantasy and gut-crunching metal were a good mix? However, this video should eliminate any question in your mind that a spiritual sequel to a 3-disc RPG masterpiece could fit on a UMD. Focusing mostly on summons, a Final Fantasy staple, this trailer has pushed our excitement for Crisis Core far beyond our apprehension towards the game. We just hope the final product has music of a more ... listenable variety.
New Crisis Core trailer shows off summons, butt rock originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Mar 2008 20:30:00 EST.
The modern Final Fantasy games are known for a couple of things: guys with spiky hair, long-winded emotional cutscenes, and massive, theatrical summons. In the interview, he notes that the world of Final Fantasy VII will continue to expand even further. Crisis Core is but the most recent addition of a long series of works expanding the FFVII universe, such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis. Tabata notes that "the Compilation's finale will take some other form." Octaslash? Come on now, that's a bit un-inventive. Sounds kind of dumb, but we're willing to bet that move is going to look wickedly stylish in the actual game. Aside from that one odd naming scheme, these screenshots of Crisis Core are spectacular.

We sure are excited for this game, especially after seeing these nostalgic screens. Also, some in-game cut scene vids have made there way up on the interwebs; those, too, are loaded with nostalgia. Check out the gallery below, and the trailers after the break.
Siliconera wisely discovered a key phrase in a recent Square Enix press release. Europe's upcoming Limited Edition version of Crisis Core (pictured, above) will feature "additional gameplay challenges not included in the original Japanese version." Apparently, this includes a new "hard" mode not found in the Japanese release.

The curious wording makes it seem likely (although unconfirmed) that the US release of the game will feature the same content. Of course, we don't particularly care about having a more difficult game -- we just really want that sweet new packaging!
Crisis Core gets 'additional gameplay challenges' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 19:30:00 EST.
Oh no! You're caught in a fight for your life! Your life is in certain doom -- what do you do? The first, of course, is the set of people eagerly awaiting the English version of Square Enix's portable Final Fantasy VII prequel, Crisis Core. Though American fans are due to receive the PSP game later this month, folks in the UK have to wait a bit longer. The wait may not be without reward, however, as a "Special Pre-Order Edition" of Crisis Core: FF7 (complete with obligatory art book and slipcase) has been spotted on certain retailer websites. Eurogamer notes that an announcement is "imminent," and suggests that offers for the rest of Europe may differ.

Oh, and the other group? That would be the smaller and decidedly more eccentric bunch that absolutely hates the F7 key for no apparent reason. We apologize if Google search picked up on our headline and led you astray. Personally, we've never cared much for that tilde key.

[Update: You can now see the special edition (animated and spinning!) on the official Crisis Core website.]

[Via PSP Fanboy]
FF7 Crisis Core receiving special edition in UK [updated] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 15:35:00 EST. Eurogamer is reporting that a special edition of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core might be on the way to Europe, or at least to the UK. Although Square Enix has yet to officially confirm it, UK retailers such as Gamestation have already begun hosting details about the special ed on their websites. Called the "Special Pre-order Edition," it will come in nice slipcase packaging, and will also included a 48-page hardbound art book. The special ed is available only when the game is pre-ordered at regular price; so there's no multiple pricing schemes going on -- just reservations.

If this does indeed prove to be true, it seems like an enticing little incentive for Europeans not to purchase the North American version soon to release in less than two weeks. Especially since NA has a fixed date and Europe has a vague spring release, we suppose Square Enix needs something extra to keep crafty Euros from importing. Well, an art book and slipcase sure do beat our UMD cases.

In just a few weeks time, a real Final Fantasy VII prequel will await you: Crisis Core's English release has us quite excited, and these new videos look really fantastic. We were doubtful of the dub at the first, but these new videos have alleviated many of our fears. So, there's this small company called "Square Enix" and they're making a game called Crisis Core. Haven't heard of it? It's a prequel to a game called Final Fantasy VII. Yeah, we never heard of it either. To help us out, Square Enix has updated the official Crisis Core website, with character bios and (more importantly) videos of the new battle system. If you aren't caught up on this game, you may want to check it out. Maybe.

[Thanks, CyborgSPIKE!]
Crisis Core website updates with new content originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 01:01:00 EST. As we discovered during our trip to Japan's Square Enix store last year, the many worlds of Final Fantasy are pockmarked by some surprisingly deep merchandise mines. No matter what the item -- t-shirts, mugs, jewelery, clothing, action figures or spoons -- chances are a tenuous link can be established between it and your favorite spiky-haired moper. Replicas of the many extravagant and frequently weapons are fine too, just as long as they're approved by Square Enix.

The company today announced a federal lawsuit filed in the Central District of California against "alleged infringers of Square Enix's intellectual property." Specifically, said infringers include "at least" four wholesalers of unlicensed sword replicas based on four video games and a CG movie (likely Advent Children) within the Final Fantasy franchise. "While Square Enix appreciates the enthusiasm of its fans, and values its relationship with
them," said Square Enix General Counsel Yasuhiko Hasegawa, "it is also obligated to protect its intellectual property rights or risk weakening or losing the very rights that enable the company to continue to provide its fans with an exciting entertainment experience."

The lawsuit has its swordid (OOF!) origins in the recent seizure of a crate full of "counterfeit" replica blades by the United States Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol. Following an investigation, Square Enix located the primary wholesalers and retailers of these "unauthorized products in the United States." We hope this turn of events will serve as a lesson to all of you looking to sell real things based on fake things.
Square Enix lawyers on guard against Final Fantasy replica swords originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 18:30:00 EST.
IGN has managed to snag the very first English language footage of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. This long-awaited prequel to the fan-favorite FFVII launches exclusively on PSP in March, and we've been curious to see how the English language version was going to turn out. Here, watch it for yourself and tell us what you think. Then, feel free to visit IGN for some character bios. You're going to get Crisis Core, right? Might as well get a free bonus with it. Pre-orders of the game will include a special "Shin-Ra Electric Power Company" UMD case. Currently, only amazon.com is showing the pre-order bonus, but other retailers should carry the bonus as well. The game releases March 25th. You only have to wait another two months or so, until March 25th, when Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII will grace the UMD trays of many a US PSP owner. Will the return trip to Midgar push PSP scales skyward, like it did in Japan? Will Zack's hair ever be truly competitive with Cloud's? Will you still cry, even though you know Aeris doesn't die this time? The above CGI clip released today won't answer any of these questions for you, we just wanted to share it with you.
Today's big hair video: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII CGI trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jan 2008 01:30:00 EST. Fear not, Europeans! It's not just those pesky Americans who are getting some Crisis Core love this Spring. Square-Enix has announced that the EU version of the game will be shipping around that time too. We say "around that time" because good ol' Square-Enix haven't actually given us anything more specific than "Spring". Our estimation would be that it arrives in March, maybe a couple of weeks later than in the US. Unless FF1 and 2 are anything to go by, that is.
Crisis Core releasing in Europe this Spring originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 08:30:00 EST. Nerds. That's who. Not only was their beloved NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams the belle of the new release ball, their spirits can now truly take flight with the news that Final Fantasy VII prequel Crisis Core is coming to American PSPs on March 25th. As you may already be aware, Square Enix's action RPG follows Zack while a part of SOLDIER as he meets Cloud, Sephiroth and others. With over 710,000 copies sold in Japan, we can't wait to get our hands on it.
We could try to do a better job of outlining where Crisis Core falls in a chronological sense in the FFVII mythology, but it's a little more effort than we're able to put forth on a Monday, so "before the PlayStation game" will have to suffice. Take your little brother's head out of the toilet and ask him, we're sure he'll be able to explain it to you.
Crisis Core coming to the U.S. March 25 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 12:35:00 EST.
