The new, improved <em>Crysis 2</em> is subtitled the "Maximum Edition" and it includes all the content in the limited edition, plus the Retaliation and Decimation DLC packs, all for $40.<br /><br />Those who snagged<em> Crysis 2 </em>on Steam before it was pulled can get<em> Maximum Edition</em> for half off through June 12 at 10 a.m. PST. EA's other pulled or unreleased titles on Steam - namely <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/16/mass-effect-3-isnt-launching-on-steam-requires-origin/"><em>Mass Effect 3</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/battlefield-3-wont-be-sold-on-steam-ea-claims-service-restric/"><em>Battlefield 3</em></a> - are still absent.<br /><br />The new version, by including all the DLC, sidesteps the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/06/eas-demartini-claims-origin-has-never-been-about-competing-wi/">restrictions</a> that kept the game off in the first place.<br /><br />[Thanks, Steven!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/crysis-2-back-on-steam-with-a-clever-new-name-extra-goodies/">Crysis 2 back on Steam with a clever new name, extra goodies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. The company joked to <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/345587/timesplitters-4-is-not-in-development-crytek-confirms/">CVG</a> it had attempted to employ the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theorem">infinite monkey theorem</a> to develop the game, but ran over budget after purchasing only seven monkeys. Thus far, said Crytek, the chimps "haven't written any code but just tease the press from time to time." In a more serious response, a Crytek spokesperson said quite plainly, "No, it's not in development."<br /><br />Rumors of a Crytek-developed <em>TimeSplitters 4</em> have been swirling for years now, with the most recent story popping up last summer, when <em>PlayStation</em> magazine <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/31/rumor-timesplitters-4-may-be-announced-soon/">reported</a> that a new TimeSplitters announcement was imminent.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/crytek-timesplitters-4-is-not-in-development/">Crytek: TimeSplitters 4 is not in development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. The developer hopes to have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/crysis-2-directx-11-update-coming-june-27-some-users-already-ha/">Direct X 11 support</a> for PC at launch this time -- one of several advantages, it says, of having spent 14 months creating content and enhancing CryEngine 3, as opposed to building it and an accompanying game for three major systems.<br /><br />"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're going to have that," said Rasmus Hojengaard, Director of Creative Development. "I don't know if we've announced that yet, but obviously we're going to have DirectX 11 support since we already did it [for <em>Crysis 2</em>]. We basically started from a <em>Crysis 2</em> DX11 patch, as starting point, and then we developed our technology from there on. We'd be pretty stupid not to capitalize on the technology we did for that and utilizing that from the get-go."<br /><br /><em>Crysis 3</em> was running on PC during a recent unveiling in San Francisco, where Crytek showed off its vision of New York City as a devastated, metropolitan mire being swallowed by nature. While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions aren't ready to be shown yet, Hojengaard says they will benefit from the studio's philosophy in art design, with the game being "actually less reliant on shader technology than, you know, just really good moods, good light setups, and good asset creation."<br /><br />That approach, in turn, also supports the PC version, which still lives beneath the franchise's reputation for crippling even the most exorbitant hardware. "We also want to make sure, even if you're on the PC, even if you don't have the super powerhouse, nuclear power plant at home, you can still run the game and get a beautiful experience from it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/24/crysis-3-intended-to-have-directx-11-support-on-pc-from-day-one/">Crysis 3 intended to have DirectX 11 support on PC from day one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 10:45:00 EST. The "sandbox shooter" will be set in 2047, inside a rainforest created by New York City being under a dome. This "Liberty Dome" will have "seven distinct and treacherous environments." The narrative will feature your standard revenge scenario with corporate conspiracy and back-stabbing going on.<br /><br />In case you can't resist a company earning interest on your money for a year, <em>Crysis 3 </em>is available now for pre-order. The <em>Crysis 3 Hunter Edition</em> includes the <i>Hunter</i> Nanosuit module and a bonus XP boost up to level 5 in the game's multiplayer -- that we know nothing about. It's available on Origin.com and participating retailers (which have other varied bonuses) for $59.99. Think of it as corporate Kickstarter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/crysis-3-announced-2013/">Crysis 3 arrives in spring 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 08:18:00 EST. While the company isn't divulging any details, it told Joystiq, "The best kept secret in shooters just can't be contained." EA adds that we should "stay tuned for more information on April 16."<br /><br />The game will reportedly take place in New York once again, according to Russian site <a href="http://www.madfanboy.com/site/pervye-podrobnosti-crysis-3">MadFanboy</a> (via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/343460/crysis-3-takes-place-in-a-heavily-destroyed-new-york-first-details/">CVG</a>). The city has become "almost a jungle," apparently. Furthermore, <em>Crysis 3</em> is reportedly set for a Spring 2013 launch. Presumably, Nano Suits will also be involved. The box art and listings have since been removed, but as we all know <em><a href="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/crysis3ohsnapohsnapgooglecache.jpg">Google sees all</a></em>.<br /><br />Moreover, as <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=469848">Neogaf</a> points out, GameReactor magazine is teasing a reveal for <em>Crysis 3</em> in the coming week. Unfortunately for both EA and the European magazine, some of that thunder got stolen by a faulty switch over at Origin.<br /><br />Box art for Xbox 360 and PC versions popped up, but we imagine it'll also arrive on PlayStation 3. We've reached out to EA for clarification, but we don't expect to hear more until next week's planned reveal. (And yes, that dude on the <em>Crysis 3</em> cover is rocking what looks like a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compound_bow">compound bow</a>.)<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/try-and-look-surprised-crysis-3-acci-revealed-by-eas-origin-se/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Crysis 3 accidentally revealed by EA's Origin service</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/try-and-look-surprised-crysis-3-acci-revealed-by-eas-origin-se/">Crysis 3 accidentally revealed by EA's Origin service</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST. The studio from Prague that's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/new-prague-based-dev-studio-warhorse-is-ready-to-rock-your-rpg/">making that unannounced RPG</a> for those unannounced next-gen consoles? Well it turns out the studio is employing Crytek's third CryEngine iteration for said unnamed project, according to a press release issued by Crytek earlier today.<br /><br />Warhorse exec producer Martin Klima explained his studio's logic behind employing CryEngine 3 by saying, "We looked at every major technology out there and CryEngine 3 suits our needs perfectly." The Warhorse folks didn't offer any more information about the RPG in production, unfortunately, and we're betting it'll be some time before we hear anything more solid on the seemingly very early in production game. Thankfully we've got these <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/well-at-least-we-wont-run-out-of-dragons-in-skyrim/">infinite dragons</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/09/howard-skyrim-offers-infinite-procedurally-generated-quests/">quests</a> to deal with in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skyrim</em></a> in the meantime!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/10/warhorse-licenses-cryengine-3-for-still-unannounced-rpg-jam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhorse licenses CryEngine 3 for still-unannounced RPG jam</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/10/warhorse-licenses-cryengine-3-for-still-unannounced-rpg-jam/">Warhorse licenses CryEngine 3 for still-unannounced RPG jam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 16:15:00 EST. Games are delivered through a plugin based on the "Seed Engine," enabling installation-free, streaming gameplay.<br /><br />If you're interested in checking out Gface, the company is hosting signups for a closed beta. In addition to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/29/ea-pc-games-are-rather-cheap-on-amazon-today/?utm_source=inezha.com&amp;utm_medium=im_robot&amp;utm_campaign=iNezha">Amazon's EA sale</a> going on now through its PC digital distribution network, there are a couple noteworthy additions to the roster today and tomorrow. Today, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-2">Crysis 2</a></em> is available for $10, a 75 percent discount off the regular price.<br />
<br />
Starting 2012 with a flashbang, Amazon will have <em>Battlefield 3</em> for $30 on the first of the year. Also relevant here is customers who have purchased anything from Amazon's "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_359496522_1?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000728511&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-2&amp;pf_rd_r=0HNBGDGJ04SA3TC5MB25&amp;pf_rd_t=1401&amp;pf_rd_p=1341538782&amp;pf_rd_i=1000746611">best-selling games of 2011</a>" should have a $5 coupon that can be applied in the new year, bringing it down to $25. That's a great price for a game that's been beta-tested since launch to the point of playability.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/31/crysis-2-for-10-today-battlefield-3-for-30-tomorrow-through-a/">Crysis 2 for $10 today, Battlefield 3 for $30 tomorrow through Amazon for PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 31 Dec 2011 14:00:00 EST. Developer Red 5 has recruited one of the masterminds behind CryEngine 3 and Crysis 2, Ury Zhilinsky, to work on its coming titles, the shooter-RPG <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/firefall">Firefall</a> </em>and an unannounced, cloud-based project titled <em>Stage 5</em>. Zhilinsky is now Red 5's senior programmer, and the studio isn't done searching for fresh talent.<br />
<br />
Considering <em>Firefall </em>entered beta this summer and it is scheduled for release in winter 2011 (that's <em>now</em>), we assume Zhilinsky and his new team will be working on this mysterious new game, <em>Stage 5</em>. Or maybe he was hired to completely redesign the <em>Firefall </em>character models to include water wings and ball gowns before its release any day now. Maybe.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/11/red-5-picks-up-former-crytek-graphics-man-ury-zhilinsky/">Red 5 picks up former Crytek graphics man, Ury Zhilinsky</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 Dec 2011 19:30:00 EST. ngmoco's recently opened Swedish branch has bolstered its staff with another pair of AAA game developers, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/38617/Former_Crytek_Staffers_Davis_Efremov_Join_Ngmoco_Sweden.php">Gamasutra</a> reports. Joining <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/21/ngmoco-to-launch-swedish-branch-with-former-ea-easy-boss-ben-cou/">former EA Easy boss Ben Cousins</a> is a pair of ex-Crytek chaps, Tony Davis and Vesselin Efremov.<br />
<br />
Davis previously worked on <em>Crysis 2</em> as a producer and director of Crytek's upcoming Kinect game, <em>Ryse</em>, while Efremov's was that of art director for <a href="http://www.blackseastudios.com/">Crytek's Black Sea Studios</a>. Crytek ended up <a href="http://www.crytek.com/news/crytek-acquires-black-sea-studios">acquiring</a> the Bulgaria-based studio back in 2008.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/19/cryteks-ryse-director-heading-to-ngmoco-along-with-black-sea-ar/">Crytek's Ryse director heading to ngmoco along with Black Sea artist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST. While we still don't know that much about the newly announced <em>Mechwarrior Online</em>, we at least know what technology is behind it. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/31/mechwarrior-reboot-will-be-pc-exclusive/">PC-exclusive</a> free-to-play title will be powered by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cryengine-3">CryEngine 3</a>, Crytek boasts in the press release past the jump. Developer Piranha Games' president, Russ Bullock, says the engine is "the best choice for us."<br />
<br />
<em>Mechwarrior Online</em> is set in the year 3049 during the "early stages of a massive interstellar war," firmly planting the butts of players in a BattleMech, the "most powerful war machine to ever walk the field of battle." And here we thought the best war machine out there was the human mind!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/19/mechwarrior-online-will-run-on-cryengine-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MechWarrior Online will run on CryEngine 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/19/mechwarrior-online-will-run-on-cryengine-3/">MechWarrior Online will run on CryEngine 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Nov 2011 08:30:00 EST. The original <em>Crysis</em> is an abstract concept for many. Whether through actual technical limitations or a perception thereof, it was the destroyer of worlds and PCs, seen as out of reach for all but the most tech-driven of PC gamers. It's been so easy to get caught up in the question of "Can it run <em>Crysis?</em>" that there's a swath of gamers who have never asked, "How is <em>Crysis</em>?"<br />
<br />
But here we are, with <em>Crysis</em> (the first) finally making its way to six year old hardware. It runs. Sounds like we weren't the only ones impressed by Epic Games' announcement of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/epic-and-adobe-announce-unreal-engine-3-support-for-flash-11/">Flash support for the ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3</a>. The crosstown engine peddlers at Crytek have been "looking into supporting Flash" in CryEngine, Edge reports, and will announce a "truly cross-platform solution" soon. With UE3 now supporting Flash, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/unreal-engine-3-comes-to-mac-os-x-courtesy-of-september-udk-rel/">in addition to Mac OS</a>, iOS, Android, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, CryEngine's support of just the big three is beginning to look a tad anemic.<br />
<br />
"It is an interesting approach we've been investigating as well," Carl Jones, director of global business development for CryEngine, said of Epic's announcement. "We're developing a unifying technology to create high quality social and gaming experiences on all platforms including browser, smartphones, tablets, etc. We hope to be able to tell you more about it soon when we present our truly cross-platform solution."<br />
<br />
With Crytek Seoul hard at work on the free-to-play FPS <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warface">Warface</a></em>, it's not surprising to learn that Crytek is looking to broaden the potential audience for its games as much as possible. What's next, <em>Crysis</em> on your console? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/your-console-can-run-crysis-on-oct-4-new-screenshots-attest/">Oh ...</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/06/hold-on-ue3-crytek-is-investigating-flash-for-cryengine-cr/">Hold on, UE3! If you are, let's say, a <em>person</em>, there's a reasonable chance your PC was ill-equipped to play <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis</em></a> when it was first released in 2007. The erstwhile PC gaming benchmark is now officially available via Xbox Live Games on Demand and PlayStation Network. Well, the single-player portion is available anyway, as the console release doesn't include multiplayer.<br />
<br />
For those on the fence, we'll have a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/deja-review">Deja Review</a> up soon. For everyone else, you can snag <em>most</em> of <em>Crysis</em> for $20.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/crysis-suiting-up-on-xbox-live-psn/">Crysis suiting up on Xbox Live, PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 19:30:00 EST. It might not have triggered a technological apoplexy in your PC, but the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/cryengine-3-sdk-available-now-for-free/">malleable</a> CryEngine 3 has granted Crytek access to a wider ranger of platforms -- including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The original <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis</em></a> is cruising to consoles (via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live's Games on Demand service) on October 4 for $20, according to <a href="http://www.ea.com/news/crysis-1-is-coming-to-xbox-live-and-psn">EA</a>'s last announcement.<br />
<br />
The publisher sent out a small batch of screenshots too, which we've appended below. Having <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/13/thq-shutters-homefront-dev-kaos-studios-and-thq-digital-warringt/">shuttered Kaos Studios</a>, the developer of <em>Homefront</em>, THQ has secured a new partnership to develop the next title in the FPS franchise. A sequel to <em>Homefront</em> will be developed in collaboration with Crytek, the company behind <em>Far Cry</em>, <em>Crysis</em> and the visually opulent CryEngine platform.<br />
<br />
"We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. He's certainly right about the expert marketing. After plastering America with adverts, THQ overcame tepid critical response and shipped over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/thq-sales-slump-for-fy2011-looking-to-successful-sequels-in-201/">2.6 million copies</a> of <em>Homefront</em> by the end of March 2011.<br />
<br />
Yerli suggests that Crytek has been granted a reassuring amount of "creative freedom" over <em>Homefront</em>, and aims to bring its war-ravaged world to life "in a new and innovative way." It'll take some time, though -- the <em>Homefront </em>sequel is scheduled to launch on PC and consoles in THQ's fiscal 2014, meaning anywhere between April 2013 and March 2014.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Joystiq has confirmed that the <em>Homefront</em> sequel will be built by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/crytek-uk">Crytek's Nottingham, UK</a> studio on the "latest" CryEngine technology.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/homefront-2-developed-by-crytek/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Crytek developing Homefront sequel with THQ</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/homefront-2-developed-by-crytek/">Crytek developing Homefront sequel with THQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 08:20:00 EST. <br />
Following an early <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/korean-game-rating-board-rates-crysis-for-xbox-360/">ratings leak</a>, an Xbox 360 and PS3 release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis 1</em></a> was announced on last night's episode of GameTrailers TV. Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli explained that the game had long been requested on consoles, and will be arriving this October via Xbox Live <strike>Arcade</strike> (Games on Demand seems more likely) and PlayStation Network.<br />
<br />
The game is said to be "remastered" with new lighting effects and streamlined Nanosuit abilities, and probably borrows some interface adjustments from <em>Crysis 2. </em>No price or exact date has been given to <em>Crysis</em> on consoles, but given the proximity to October we expect to hear more very soon.<br />

It hasn't even been a week since Crytek <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/cryengine-3-sdk-available-now-for-free/">announced the availability</a> of a free (for non-commercial use!) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cryengine-3">CryEngine 3</a> SDK and already the German developer is touting over 100,000 downloads. With everything you need to make a great looking game, Crytek's gamble is that by lowering the barrier to entry, it will increase the number of developers comfortable with its technology.<br />
<br />
The worst (best) case scenario is that if a developer strikes it rich using the freely available tools, they need only license the technology for a 20% cut of the revenues. It remains to be seen if this approach will result in seeing more CryEngine 3-powered AAA games on retailer's shelves, but with steady (and ubiquitous) competition from Epic's Unreal Engine and its oh-so-similar free-for-commercial-use <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/udk">UDK</a>, Crytek is at least staying competitive. Now, let's see if we get 100,000 <em>beautiful</em> indie games anytime soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/23/cryengine-3-sdk-hits-100-000-downloads-in-just-five-days-we-exp/">CryEngine 3 SDK hits 100,000 downloads in just five days, we expect 100,000 new games to play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 07:30:00 EST. Above: An early, work-in-progress screenshot of Joystiq Publishing's atmospheric and haunting adventure, <em>Fears for Spheres</em>. We just whipped it up in the last 20 minutes with the aid of the CryEngine 3 SDK, which is now available for free from the <a href="http://www.crydev.net/dm_eds/download_detail.php?id=4">CryDev</a> website.<br />
<br />
With access to the engine that powered <em>Crysis 2</em>, as well as the CryEngine 3 Sandbox level editor, we've been able to breathe perfectly lit life into our artistic (and non-commercial) endeavor. If we were trying to impart some educational information in a classroom, developer Crytek wouldn't charge us a cent either. (It's a competitive stance, considering the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/unreal-development-kit-brings-unreal-engine-development-to-the-m/"><em>Unreal Development Kit</em></a> is free as well. Both require users to pay a licensing fee if the project becomes commercial.)<br />
<br />
Though this SDK has helped us to quickly arrange terrain, AI and textures, the central "narrative" -- as they say -- of <em>Fears for Spheres</em> has been years in the making.<br />
<br />
<em>Embark on the tragic journey of Borb, the reflective amnesiac sphere, cursed to wander/wonder through a fantasy realm in search of his true purpose.</em> <em>"Who am I?" he asks a traveler in passing. "I know not," comes the reply, "but you have shown me much of myself today. Such is your thankless existence."</em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/cryengine-3-sdk-available-now-for-free/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CryEngine 3 SDK available now for free</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/cryengine-3-sdk-available-now-for-free/">CryEngine 3 SDK available now for free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 17:10:00 EST. <br />
According to Microsoft's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/phil-spencer">Phil Spencer</a>, the company was once in talks with <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/crytek">Crytek</a> to turn the German developer into a first-party studio. Speaking to the UK <a href="http://www.oxm.co.uk/30963/news/crytek-has-fallen-in-love-with-kinect-microsoft-games-studio-boss/">Official Xbox Magazine</a>, Spencer noted that Microsoft first started talking to Crytek around eight years ago and "started talking about what it'd mean for them to become first party."<br />
<br />
At the time, Crytek was dead set on creating the motherboard-melting sci-fi shooter, <em>Crysis</em>. Unfortunately, the title would have clashed with Microsoft's then full slate of "militaristic future shooters" (which one, we <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/halo">wonder</a>), so the deal never came to be.<br />
<br />
Fast forward a few years and Crytek is developing <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/ryse"><em>Ryse</em></a> -- an Xbox exclusive -- with Spencer saying that Crytek has "fallen in love with the Kinect" and that the project is "a perfect marriage" between the two companies. So remember, kids, true love does exist!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/04/spencer-microsoft-once-considered-crytek-for-1st-party-developm/">Spencer: Microsoft once considered Crytek for 1st party development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Jul 2011 13:45:00 EST. A new rating suggests that the first <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis</em></a> may be headed to Xbox 360. "Crysis" was spotted on the <a href="http://grb.or.kr/Statistics/GameStatistics.aspx?TYPE=search&amp;PT=01&amp;TI=crysis">Korean Game Rating Board</a> website, listed for Xbox 360. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a> is already on the database, with separate listings for each platform (including Xbox), so it's not simply a matter of the sequel being released in that market as just "Crysis."<br />
<br />
That leaves the tantalizing possibility that <em>Crysis</em> is being ported to Xbox 360, using Crytek's multiplatform-friendly CryEngine 3. There's also the distinct possibility that the listing is just a mistake, though we're hardly tantalized at all by that.<br />
<br />
[Thanks, Sacra]<br />
<br />

After establishing a reputation for cutting edge graphics with the original <em>Crysis</em>, many PC gamers were disappointed with the fact that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a> did not support DirectX 11. It left their high-performance rigs feeling underutilized. Well, that underutilization comes to an end today, since Crytek officially released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/crysis-2-directx-11-update-coming-june-27-some-users-already-ha/">two free upgrade packages</a> that will push video cards to the limit and cause you to overdose on eye candy.<br />
<br />
After upgrading the game to v1.9 via automatic update, you can download and install the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2/download/crysis-2-directx-11-ultra-upgrade-patch">DX11 Ultra Upgrade</a>, which adds features like tessellation and displacement mapping, realistic shadows and more. To amp things up even further, grab the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2/download/crysis-2-high-resolution-texture-pack-upgrade">Hi Res Texture Pack</a>, which includes impressive graphical improvements whether you're using DX11 or DX9 (64-bit OS and at least 768 MB of video card memory required). Check out the trailer after the jump to see what's in store.<br />

Crytek announced a new "package" for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a> that will add compatibility with DirectX 11, which should improve the graphics significantly for people who are desperately looking for specific improvements that they <em>know</em> DirectX 11 can provide, and improve the graphics a little for everyone else too. A high-resolution texture pack will be available at the same time.<br />
<br />
However, it would appear that some users already have the packages. Crytek noted in an update to the announcement that "a number of users were able to download the DX11 and High res texture packages from our test environment," a leak that has since been closed. The rest of us will get to look at those textures, lit by those no-doubt improved lighting effects, on Monday, June 27. A patch will also go out the same day -- it's required for the new textures and the DX11 compatibility.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/crysis-2-directx-11-update-coming-june-27-some-users-already-ha/">Crysis 2 DirectX 11 update coming June 27, some users already have it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 01:00:00 EST. Earlier this week, <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/xbox_720_likely_at_e3_2012_crytek_on_board_2.html">Videogamer</a> reported a rumor that the next generation of Microsoft hardware would be unveiled at E3 2012 and that Crytek already had its mitts on it, supposedly developing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/timesplitters-4"><em>TimeSplitters 4</em></a> -- which would also be shown off at next year's annual trade show. However, according to the latest Crytek newsletter, it's all baloney.<br />
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	"Relating to the recent rumours, Crytek do not have any next generation hardware from Microsoft, nor do we know when Microsoft may announce future hardware or what that hardware will entail. Crytek are working at pushing the boundaries of what current technology can bring, including our focus on DX11 which will be released shortly as an update for Crysis 2, and we believe this work, added to our estimations of what the new hardware will provide, set up CryENGINE as a next generation engine for all consoles."</blockquote>
Besides, it wouldn't make much sense for Microsoft to announce a new console when it's all gung-ho on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect">Kinect</a> right now -- unless the new console uses Kinect. You guys, we think <em>we just figured it out</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/17/crytek-denies-it-has-new-xbox-hardware/">Crytek denies it has new Xbox hardware</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 18:45:00 EST. Earlier today, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a> and other notable EA titles <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1930146">vanished from Steam</a>. Initially thought to be a decision involving EA's new digital platform, Origin, it turns out EA didn't really have a hand in its expulsion from Valve's service -- apparently "Crytek has an agreement with another download service" which violates some new rules imposed by Steam, resulting in the "expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam," according to comments made by EA to <a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/news/crysis-2-and-others-disappear-from-steam-eas-relationship-with-steam-unknown-updated/3382/">Giant Bomb</a>.<br />
<br />
Neither Valve nor EA are talking about what these "new rules" are, but all signs point to Origin. <em>Crysis 2</em> is available there, as are other games pulled from Steam -- <em>Alice: Madness Returns</em> can only be found on Origin (until June 17, it appears), though several other notable EA titles such as <em>Battlefield: Bad Company 2</em>, <em>Dragon Age 2</em> and <em>Bulletstorm</em> still remain on Steam.<br />
<br />
In the future, EA hopes to offer exclusive content through its Origins portal, including games. Frank Gibeau, president of EA Games, told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-06-15-ea-confirms-more-platform-exclusives-for-origin">GI.biz</a> that "EA's going to have some of our own platform exclusives" on the new service. This includes <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em>, which will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/ea-takes-on-steam-with-origin-the-only-place-to-download-the-ol/">only be offered through Origin</a>.<br />
<br />
"I think long-term you'll see we believe in reach so we will have other digital retailers for our products because we want to reach as many audiences as possible," Gibeau said. "But at the same time if we can use exclusive content or other ideas to help grow our audience then we're going to do that because we're growing a platform."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/crysis-2-ditching-steam-not-an-ea-decision-origin-exclusive-tit/">Crysis 2 ditching Steam not an EA decision; Origin-exclusive titles planned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 15:53:00 EST. It's an ongoing <em>Crysis</em> -- EA and Crytek have launched the second DLC expansion for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a>, dubbed the Decimation Pack, for Xbox 360 and PC. Available right now <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Crysis-2-Decimation-Pack/23dd7056-f15f-4cb3-a41f-dbd56ee60fa4?cid=SLink">via the Xbox Live Marketplace</a> and as an in-game purchase for PC, the 800 MSP ($10) add-on content brings five new maps and two new weapons to the <em>Crysis</em> sequel's multiplayer mode.<br />
<br />
The added maps are: 5th Avenue, Apartments, Chasm, Plaza and Prism. Players' arsenals have been expanded with the long-range FY71 assault rifle and smoke grenades. This is the second multiplayer DLC for the game, which received the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/crysis-2-getting-retaliation-dlc-on-may-17/">Retaliation Pack</a> -- adding four new maps -- last month.<br />
<br />
Look for the the Decimation Pack to arrive on PS3 June 28. See the new maps and weapons in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/">PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 15:16:00 EST. Unfortunately, the first teaser for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/ryse"><em>Ryse</em></a>, Crytek's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/ryse-coming-from-crytek-puts-you-in-the-fall-of-rome-with-kinec/">Rome-based Kinect title</a>, isn't much more than a concept video, showing off the game's graphic engine, and then a little bit of what the gameplay might be like, with a Kinect player using arms, legs, and even his head to throw down with a Roman countryman.<br />
	<br />
	The game looks pretty precise when faced with actual shield-bashing and front-kicking movements from the player. But we'll have to wait and see just how it handles our standard Kinect operating procedure: Randomly flailing our various limbs around.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/kick-and-punch-back-and-check-out-cryteks-ryse-kinect-brawler/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kick (and punch) back and check out Crytek's Ryse Kinect brawler</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/kick-and-punch-back-and-check-out-cryteks-ryse-kinect-brawler/">Kick (and punch) back and check out Crytek's Ryse Kinect brawler</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 16:41:00 EST. Crytek has formally announced <em>Ryse</em>, a first-person action game that's currently under development at Crytek. The trailer, which aired during Microsoft's E3 press conference, showed a massive Roman battle in which the player duels an invading soldier using gesture-based attacks. Swing (or throw!) a sword with one hand, block attacks with the other, and kick with -- you know, your foot. The traditional kicking appendage.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/ryse-coming-from-crytek-puts-you-in-the-fall-of-rome-with-kinec/">Ryse coming from Crytek, puts you in the fall of Rome with Kinect</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:18:00 EST. The cybernetic suits of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2 </em></a>will soon leap, slide, shoot, and ground-stomp each other in four new DLC maps: "Park Avenue, Transit, Shipyard, and Compound." They're set to drop on May 17 as the "Retaliation" map pack.<br />
<br />
The add-on is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, though its availability on PS3 is dependent on whether or not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn-outage-2011">PSN is back up</a> by next week. No price is given in the announcement, nor the trailer, so we'll try to find out for you.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> An EA rep confirmed with Joystiq a price of 800 MS Points/$9.99 for the DLC.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-2-retaliation-pack/">Crysis 2 Retaliation Pack</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-2-retaliation-pack/#4121366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/c2retaliation2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-2-retaliation-pack/#4121365"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/c2retaliation1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/crysis-2-getting-retaliation-dlc-on-may-17/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Crysis 2 getting 'Retaliation' DLC on May 17</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/crysis-2-getting-retaliation-dlc-on-may-17/">Crysis 2 getting 'Retaliation' DLC on May 17</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 May 2011 11:00:00 EST. On Friday, the first <em>Crysis</em> game and its expansion were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/crysis-hits-rock-bottom-price-in-steam-sale/">discounted</a> on Steam as part of an "EA Week" of sales. That night, on the Steam Users' Forums, purchasers began <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1875468">reporting</a> that they could not activate the games. By the next morning, some 221 replies later, a Valve representative <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=22265801#post22265801">chimed in</a> to say, "We are aware of the problem and are investigating the issue."<br />
<br />
While it might have been a <em>long</em> weekend for those left waiting for their activation keys to start working, this morning, Valve software developer Mike Blaszczak started a <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1879831">new thread</a> with some reassuring news. "We've been working with EA to get the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis</em></a> keys enabled over the weekend," he posted. "As EA enables keys, users should see the games activate."<br />
<br />
Blaszczak implied that the issue stemmed from EA's side, adding, "EA is aware of the issue and actively working through it, and we're doing what we can to assist."<br />
<br />
In a follow-up response he confirmed, "Yes, we know the cause," but avoided an explanation. As of publishing, a few users had replied to say their games were now working, though Blaszczak warned, "No ETA is available for individual users."<br />
<br />
[Thanks, Martin]<br />

The EA Steam Week continues with deals on <em>Crysis</em> games. Right now, you can get <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis"><em>Crysis</em></a> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/17300/">$7.49</a> through the digital storefront, or <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/crysis-warhead"><em>Crysis Warhead</em></a> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/17330/">$4.99</a>; however, true, hardcore saving-money-on-<em>Crysis</em> fans will be more interested in the <em>Crysis Maximum Edition</em>, which combines the two for just <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/987/">$10</a>. Those prices will help you maintain enough savings for the rest of the stuff you'll be impulse-buying on Steam this week.<br />
<br />
These deals are active in North America, but a quick warning -- they may be different in your region. And they'll definitely be different Saturday at 1PM EST, when the deal expires.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/crysis-hits-rock-bottom-price-in-steam-sale/">Crysis hits rock bottom price in Steam sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 16:34:00 EST. According to reports from <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34544/Source_Layoffs_At_Crytek_Budapest_Kinect_Game_Moves_Foward.php">Gamasutra</a> and <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-06-crytek-lay-offs-at-kingdoms-dev-report">Eurogamer</a>, Crysis developer Crytek is planning on laying off a number of employees at its Budapest studio. The team at Crytek Budapest was knee-deep in developing the Xbox 360-exclusive fantasy title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/codename-kingdoms"><em>Kingdoms</em></a> (which both reports also mention will be Kinect-compatible) -- however, the project has now been placed in the charge of Crytek's Frankfurt studio. The reports claim that Crytek Budapest will now focus on tablet-based games, and will see its staff size cut from 80 down to 30-35 as a result.<br />
<br />
Crytek managing director Avni Yerli did not directly confirm the layoffs, but did respond to the reports, saying, "We can confirm that our Budapest studio is getting a new direction and focus." The reports claim that whatever changes might go down will happen in the next few weeks, so we're sure to know more soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/report-crytek-budapest-facing-layoffs-codename-kingdoms-still/">Report: Crytek Budapest facing layoffs, Codename: Kingdoms still on and Kinect-compatible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. We know you're having a hard time choosing between all the different nanomachine-infused, suit-centric first-person shooters set in a ruined New York City. Why not go with the cheap one? Amazon's marked down <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a> to $39.95 as its current deal of the day.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/26/amazon-offers-crysis-2-for-40-that-nano-suits-us-just-fine/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Amazon offers Crysis 2 for $40, that nano-suits us just fine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/26/amazon-offers-crysis-2-for-40-that-nano-suits-us-just-fine/">Amazon offers Crysis 2 for $40, that nano-suits us just fine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 13:30:00 EST.
