	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/npd-sales-of-dancing-games-up-326-over-last-year/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/jd31129.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></center>
In the US, dancing game sales are up 326% percent year over year, the NPD told the LA Times. That's for the 12-month period ending October 31. Compare that with overall game sales, which rose 3%.<br />
<br />
Of course, at the end of October last year, <em>Just Dance 2</em> had only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/october-npd-nba-2k11-tops-charts-xbox-360-best-selling-consol/">started selling</a>. Since then, it's been doing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/just-dance-2-just-broke-5-million-copies-sold-in-the-us/">very well</a> for itself, and has been followed by several spinoffs, including <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/just-dance-kids"><em>Just Dance Kids</em></a> (and its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/just-dance-kids-2-shakes-it-all-about-this-october/">sequel</a>!), <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/michael-jackson-the-experience"><em>Michael Jackson: The Experience</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/finally-ubisoft-announces-the-black-eyed-peas-experience-for-ki/"><em>The Black Eyed Peas Experience</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/just-dance-2-throwing-a-summer-party-on-july-21/"><em>Just Dance 2 Summer Party</em></a>, and, of course, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/just-dance-3"><em>Just Dance 3</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Too damn many <em>Just Dance</em> games can't claim all the credit for the growth in dancing-machine sales. <em>Dance Central</em> is at somewhere <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/18/dance-central-sales-step-up-to-2-5m-kinect-sports-kickin-it-wi/">over 2.5 million units</a>, and it's been followed by a <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dance-central-2">sequel</a>; <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/zumba-fitness"><em>Zumba Fitness</em></a> has been a phenomenon, and Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/sony-launching-new-move-bundle-ps3-with-everybody-dance/"><em>Everybody Dance</em></a> is also available.<br />
<br />
Update: corrected <em>Dance Central</em> sales figures.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/npd-sales-of-dancing-games-up-326-over-last-year/">NPD: Sales of dancing games up 326% over last year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST. As a diminutive person who jabs at buttons and keyboards for a living, I can say with the utmost accuracy that dancing isn't my forte. You'll probably come to the same conclusion after watching the video of me gyrating to the beat of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face," which I've foolishly embedded after the break. I've placed it there because I want you to see -- somewhere in that garbled body dialect -- how rapidly the "Oh my god, I can't be seen doing this" phase is supplanted by an inescapable feeling of fun. The endorphins don't lie, guys.<br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dance-central">Dance Central</a></em> isn't a quick-and-dirty ditty from Harmonix, the developers behind <em>Amplitude</em> and <em>Rock Band</em>. It's an immediately accessible rhythm title that trades multi-colored buttons for body language, presented in the form of easily processed silhouette cards. A practice mode enables you to gain familiarity with the dance move associated with each silhouette card, but I found them clear enough to follow correctly on my first attempt. Glance at the upcoming move card (think of it as the "next piece" window in Tetris) and prepare to mimic it and the group of on-screen dancers in rhythm to the music. It's like dancing in front of a mirror -- if you were a vibrant cartoon person with a boombox.<br />
<br />
The reflection of your own body, as captured precisely by the Xbox 360's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect|project-natal">Kinect</a> camera, is almost hidden compared to the in-game characters, and it makes the game feel more collaborative than judgmental. In comparison to rote stomp-'em-down <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, it's a dance dance revelation. I understand there's a mental embarrassment hurdle to be cleared here so, if it helps, better to think of <em>Dance Central</em> as a hip, hip-thrusting exercise game. Either way, you should also think of it as one of Kinect's least abstract games -- you're not awkwardly driving an invisible car, for example -- and certainly one of its most promising. <br />

However, the next game in Ubisoft's dance series isn't a simple <em>Just Dance</em> sequel (though we're sure that'll happen too) -- rather than licensing a few pop hits and a few really embarrassing dance songs from the early '90s, the next game is about ... showtunes.<br />
<br />
<em>Dance on Broadway</em> features a selection of 20 songs from Broadway musicals, including "All That Jazz,""Fame" and "Time Warp" (it's just a jump to the left!) The full track list is available after the break.<br />
<br />
Ubisoft has announced a June 24 release date for EMEA territories, but none yet for North America. The ESRB rating on the box art would suggest that a North American debut isn't far off.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/ubisofts-dance-on-broadway-hitting-the-great-white-wii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ubisoft's Dance on Broadway hitting the Great White Wii</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/ubisofts-dance-on-broadway-hitting-the-great-white-wii/">Ubisoft's Dance on Broadway hitting the Great White Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 22:30:00 EST. The combination of the imperative title and the goofy enthusiasm of the trailer make us follow the Wii dancing game a little more closely than others we don't really intend to <em>play</em>. <br /><br />The site alerted us to the box art for the title, which boldly advertises three songs: "U Can't Touch This," "Groove is in the Heart," and "Hot N Cold." We have yet to decide, but we think ... we might like the design. It'll certainly stand out on the shelf, commanding everyone who walks by to <em>just dance</em>. And the people on the box won't be as humiliated with their appearance as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/promotional-consideration-come-as-you-are/"><em>Jam Sessions</em> guy</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/">Just Dance</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/#2222929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/justdance_screenshot_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/#2222928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/justdance_screenshot_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/#2222927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/justdance_screenshot_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/#2222926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/justdance_screenshot_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/just-dance/#2222925"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/justdance_screenshot_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/just-dance-box-art-keeps-it-simple/">Just Dance box art keeps it simple</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. No matter where you are -- the office, the convenience store, the, uh, 1950s -- it's the perfect time to turn on some dance pop from twenty years ago, turn into a glowing cartoon, and --<br /><br /><em>Just Dance.</em> <br /><br />Of course, Ubisoft would prefer that you <em>just dance</em> at home, by playing the Wii game this trailer is promoting, but you don't need to worry about details like that. You have one solitary obligation, and that is to dance. <br /><br />Due to its use of the Wii Remote, this game seems to emphasize arm movements in dance, contrasting with <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, which is based primarily on foot movements. <br />It's normally only the biggest names that get splashed across limited edition DS Lites -- the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891251/"><em>Nintendogs</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891266/"><em>Zelda</em></a>s, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891298/"><em>Pok&eacute;mon</em></a>s, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891248/"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a>s, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891292/"><em>Final Fantasy</em></a>s of this world. Playlogic clearly feels that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/you-got-served-some-new-screenshots/"><em>Red Bull BC One</em></a> is ready to join that elite bunch, because it ordered in an unspecified number of Onyx Black DSes and proceeded to uglify them by slapping these forgettable transfers on each.<br /><br />We don't wish to be mean-spirited, but we're struggling to see who will pick this up. In our experience, limited edition DSes are based on games with either a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891301/">rabid fanbase</a>, huge <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/guitar-hero-ds-bundle-is-almost-perfect/">brand power</a>, or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/891299/">both</a>. As out of touch with modern culture as we are, we're fairly certain that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/all-the-way-live-red-bull-bc-one/"><em>Red Bull BC One</em></a> has neither. At least the children of Playlogic CEOs know what they're getting for Christmas.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/">Limited Edition Lites: A History of Sadness</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/#891248"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/gh-bundle-lite-se-glft_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Play DS like a rock star" title="Play DS like a rock star" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/#891251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/ds-gal-ftros-nin_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Too little too late" title="Too little too late" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/#891266"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/dsl-zel-gold-galft_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Master using it and you can have this" title="Master using it and you can have this" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/#891278"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/set-mar-dsl-galft_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Take me out to the video game" title="Take me out to the video game" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/limited-edition-lites-a-history-of-sadness/#891276"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/pc-dsl-galft-why_thumbnail.jpg" alt="What." title="What." /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=54395">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/a-for-optimism-d-for-style-the-red-bull-bc-one-ds/">'A' for optimism, 'D' for style: the Red Bull BC One DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 17:30:00 EST. <br />While some of you remain skeptical about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/helix-springs-onto-wiiware/"><em>Helix</em></a>, we're definitely interested in Ghostfire Games' upcoming WiiWare title. Essentially, everything you need to know about the game is revealed by Ed Roman in this producer walkthrough (embedded up top). <br /><br />Ghostfire is really stressing the whole "exercise made fun" angle, and with the success of titles like <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/ddr"><em>DDR</em></a> and <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, who can blame them? What we like most about <em>Helix</em>, though, is that the developers clearly put a lot of thought into every aspect of this dancing game. Take, for example, the calibration option, which helps the software map out your own specific movement quirks more easily. (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/motionplus/">MotionPlus</a>, schmotionplus.) Also, according to Roman, you can still play the game if you only have one Wiimote, so if you lack two controllers that's not a game-killing issue.<br /><br />If you're curious about how the developers fit twenty-six songs onto a WiiWare title, or why they decided to use two Wiimotes rather than a Wiimote/Nunchuk combination, or anything else about <em>Helix</em>, for that matter, just check out the video above.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/taking-a-closer-look-at-helix/">Taking a closer look at Helix</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST. As if the fact that it's <em>only being released in Japan</em> (as of yet) and the J-idol theme aren't enough clues, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/new-rhythm-game-happily-dances-into-famitsu/"><em>Happy Dance Collection</em></a> is a very Japan-focused game. Namco Bandai is aiming squarely at the female Japanese audience with this game, which does contrast a bit to the variety of J-pop, European dance and other stuff usually found in the <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em> series. There's no <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-Rotic">E-rotic</a> to be found here, for example.<br /><br />Siliconera has posted a translated list of all the known J-pop songs appearing in <em>Happy Dance Collection</em>, which includes recent releases like Orange Range's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KcS_-1ljB0">Ikenai Taiyou</a>," and Greeeen's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNxSQDi8Trw">Ai Uta</a>" as well as more "classic" songs like Morning Musume's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwacTv-6DK4">Love Machine</a>" and Koda Kumi's <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st7XuTeADd0">Cutie Honey</a></em> theme (well, 2004 is kind of in the past, right?)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/happy-dance-collection-intended-to-make-j-pop-fans-happy/">Happy Dance Collection intended to make J-pop fans happy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Jul 2008 15:30:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-we-fit-into-natsumes-niche/">promised</a> earlier today, Natsume has distributed lots of fresh media for its localization of Cave's <em>Princess Debut</em>, complete with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/princess-debut/919861/">talking animals</a>, an entire wardrobe of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/princess-debut/919956/">accessories</a>, and (of course) lots of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/princess-debut/919959/">dancing</a> with charming Princes. On her way to one of 14 different endings, the erstwhile princess can unlock 20 new outfits.<br /><br />While this is clearly not targeted at <em>us</em>, we like to see new interpretations of the "dancing game." This is like <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, except with more revolving.<br /><br />
<br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/natsume-officially-introduces-princess-debut/">Natsume officially introduces Princess Debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST. That's right, you'll now be able to seductively wiggle those hips of yours and call it a game. So many Japanese Wii owners have <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> that we don't see userbase being an issue, as the peripheral will be required (not optional) to play this title.<br /><br />Keep in mind, though, that the game's publisher (Milestone) didn't officially announce <em>Hula Wii: Minna de Hula wo Odorou</em> (<em>Dance Hula Together</em>); a listing was discovered on a Japanese online retailer's site, revealing the release date as September 25th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/dance-hula-together-on-the-wii/">Dance Hula Together on the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST. Electronic Arts has slipped on a pair of bootie shorts and shaked its groove thang all the way back to the well, announcing <em>Boogie SuperStar</em> exclusively for the Wii. A follow up to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boogie/">last year's family-friendly rhythm game</a>, <em>Boogie</em>, the game is the latest to be counted among EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/05/ea-announces-casual-games-branch/">casual brand</a>, and is being targeted specifically at girls - though <em>how exactly</em> the game will favor the fairer sex remains to be seen.<br /><br />Once again being developed by EA Montreal, information about the game was first <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/16/ngamer-boogie-superstar-is-balance-superstar/">leaked last month</a>, at that time indicating that <em>Boogie SuperStar</em> would have players dancing on the Wii Balance Board, though EA's official announcement makes note of no such functionality. What we do know is that <em>Boogie SuperStar </em>will allow up to four gals to keep rhythm, customize characters, and cut rugs using the Wii remote, all while being judged by the game on their road to win it big in the game's 'Boogie Star Show.' The sequel will also feature more than 40 different licensed tracks from groups and singers such as Maroon 5, Britney Spears, and Kanye West, though EA bills the music as being 'made popular by' these artists, so cheap imitations will likely be the order of the day when <em>Boogie SuperStar</em> ships in both North America and Europe this October.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/ea-announces-girl-friendly-boogie-superstar-for-wii/">EA announces girl-friendly Boogie SuperStar for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 09:45:00 EST. The sale event follows a familiar format: one Deal-of-the-Day bargain posted at 12:01 AM PST, then four Lightning Deals trickled out at 6:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 6:00 PM PST, each one available for only four hours or while stocks last. <br /> <br /> So, which Wii rhythm games are you expecting? There's a decent-sized list of possibilities, but, uh, not many of them would be considered "decent" themselves:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alvin-and-the-chipmunks">Alvin and the Chipmunks</a></em></li>

    <li><em>Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore</em></li>
</ul>
Looking at that pitiful selection, we're actually hoping that most of the bargains will be for music-based games on other platforms ...<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/">CAG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/put-on-your-dancing-shoes-amazon-gold-box-deals-for-rhythm-game/">Put on your dancing shoes: Amazon Gold Box deals for rhythm games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 23:30:00 EST. <br />What does this woman think she's doing? We have seen some terrible outfits before, but this woman is crazy enough to wear hers with a smile. She should be ashamed just to have these embarassing pieces in her wardrobe, let alone actually on her, in public view. What excuse does anyone have to ever own checkerboard-patterned thigh-highs?<br /><br />In case you missed the news from last week, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Konami/">Konami</a> is following up its previous <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddr">DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party</a></em> game with <em>DDR Hottest Party 2</em>, promising Mii support, new gimmicks like the "triple stomp," more Wii remote interaction in the Dance n' Defend Battle Mode, new stages, and new characters, such as the unfortunate looking woman mentioned above. The rhythm title will also support a new soundtrack including "smash-hits from the last 4 decades," like Rihanna's immensely annoying "Umbrella" (ella, ella, ay, ay, ay) and Michael Jackson's least exciting single, "Black or White." <br /><br />But let's get back to what's really on every gamer's mind -- how do these people live with themselves dressing in these clothes? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ddr-hottest-party-2-1/814383/full/">This lady</a> thinks she can get away with wearing a Zebra-print cap with matching hot pants and boots. Protip: it's best to pair a loud print with a neutral piece, rather than mixing or matching it with more loud prints. Now you know.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/ddr2-hottest-party-2-screens-show-mii-support-poor-outfit-decis/">DDR2 Hottest Party 2 screens show Mii support, poor outfit decisions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 May 2008 23:00:00 EST. What is interesting is that, if NGamer's description of the game as a "board-based dance-a-thon" is accurate, Balance Board support may be <em>more</em> than just an optional extra.<br /><br />It's no surprise that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> is supporting the new controller: their recently-announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/10/skate-it-ea-announces-it/"><em>Skate It</em></a> simulates a skateboard with the Board, and there's some kind of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ea-plans-western-style-exercise-game-for-balance-board/">exercise game</a> on the way that will use it extensively. But if EA really is building a sequel to an existing (if somewhat unloved) franchise that <em>requires</em> $90 hardware the previous game didn't, they must really like <strike><em>Wii Fit </em>money</strike> the Balance Board.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/ngamer-boogie-superstar-is-balance-superstar/">NGamer: Boogie Superstar is Balance Superstar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. Thanks to <em>Famitsu</em>, we now know a little more about how the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/the-wii-game-of-haruhi-suzumiya/"><em>Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya</em></a> dancing game works. It'll feature the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2HpAE-QcQA">Hare Hare Yukai</a> dance, <em>of course, </em>but it will also feature new dances! Dancing through the main game will unlock options for the "free mode," including costumes, locations, and songs. In free mode, you can play the song of your choice. This is also where the three-player multiplayer is available. This mode is also being touted as enabling <em>exercise</em>, though we don't know if that means some kind of exercise/health-related (calorie count, etc.) will be included. It is also currently unknown whether the two remaining SOS Brigade members will be playable, but they're <em>male</em> and therefore a low priority.<br /><br />The SOS Brigade icon in the corner of the screen reads "Action!" to alert players to the start of a stage. The life bar starts at full and decrements along with missed movements. Moves are to be performed while move icons are inside a generous red bar, which makes the game look fairly easy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/the-haruhi-dance-game-in-more-detail/">The Haruhi dance game in more detail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 13:15:00 EST. The mega-popular anime series <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya_%28anime%29"><em>The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya</em></a> is now being made into a Wii game, after success on the PS2 and PSP (mostly as vectors for delivery of exclusive Haruhi figurines). The Wii game, we predict, will be the biggest success of all, because<br />
<ul>
    <li>it also includes a Haruhi figurine, and</li>
    <li>it's based on the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2HpAE-QcQA">dance sequence</a> from the anime's ending, which has become an Internet <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrmUiSZjYMg&amp;eurl=http://www.gamespite.net/verbalspew/archives/entry_331.php">phenomenon</a></li>
</ul>
Up to three players control Haruhi, Yuki Nagato and Mikuru Asahina in a motion-based dance game, which seems to involve mimicking poses with Wiimote positioning. In addition, it also contains the standard anime-game adventure component, featuring a new storyline. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/the-wii-game-of-haruhi-suzumiya/">The Wii Game of Haruhi Suzumiya</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 May 2008 08:45:00 EST. The website for Cave's princess-impersonating dancing game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/princess-debuts-inaugural-trailer/"><em>Princess Debut</em></a>, features a lovely activity that is <em>probably</em> designed for little girls, but is kind of fun anyway. In keeping with the theme of <em>not</em> actually being a princess, you can design a DS cover out of fake rhinestones and then print it out! If you aren't feeling creative, there's even a template available to color in.<br /><br />Ideally, you'd affix this to the system by slipping it inside a transparent cover, but you'd probably be okay using <em>just</em> a little tape. Alternately, you could just mess with the editor for fun. But then how would your DS get any more princess-like? <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20080508/ohime.htm">GAME Watch</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/cave-helps-your-ds-make-its-princess-debut/">Cave helps your DS make its Princess Debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 22:30:00 EST. Cave is still <em>bravely</em> making a cute game about a faux princess learning to dance and collecting silly clothing. It uses a variant of <em>Ouendan-</em>style precision dragging to control various ballroom dance moves.<br /><br />The "Dance Action &amp; Adventure Game" features magical-girl-style transformation sequences for the all-important <em>outfits,</em> and even a "watch mode" that allows you to replay dances. We're still curious about how well the skills Cave has honed in creating bullet-hell shooters translate into dancing to classical music with a white rabbit in a tuxedo.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/princess-debuts-inaugural-trailer/">Princess Debut's inaugural trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. We understand the kind of heavily stylized appearance they were <em>trying</em> to do, and if that had happened, we would have found it awesome. We respect the <em>idea,</em> at least.<br /><br />We're willing to give <em>BC One</em> a certain amount of leeway just based on the fact that <em>it is a game about breakdancing</em>.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/you-got-served-some-new-screenshots/">You got served (some new screenshots)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. Now you can make that "modern 2D shooters <em>and</em> DS adventure games about waltzing princesses." <em>Ohimesama Debut</em> (<em>Princess Debut</em>) is a game about a middle-school girl who switches places with an identical-looking princess from a parallel dimension and dances with princes in her stead.<br /><br />Gameplay involves moving the stylus to match a sequence of prescribed shapes, which correspond to dance moves. At the end of the performance, you'll be able to watch a replay. It seems simplistic, and it probably won't require the same amount of precision as, say, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SsPD2hmAMo"><em>DoDonPachi</em></a>, but we kind of want to see what Cave's <em>up to</em> with this game. Maybe they just really wanted to get in on the DS princess game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/the-world-revolves-around-a-selfish-princess/">wave</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/a-daintier-side-of-cave/">A daintier side of Cave</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST. The exact pay-for-play system wasn't discussed in detail, but 16-year-old Arienne Stearns apparently needed a "C" grade on her dance to erase $14 of fines from her record.<br /><br />Not that you had to have overdue books to play -- apparently, many girls "took second turns competing against the librarian, just for fun." This is a good deal, because from what we've heard, you haven't <em>really </em>experienced <em>DDR</em> until you've played it against a librarian ...<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/06/library-lets-patrons-play-ddr-to-avoid-late-fees/">Library lets patrons play DDR to avoid late fees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 04:00:00 EST. The portable version of the title has more game in it (read: objectives and losing conditions). But after briefly playing, it still seems <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/todays-least-surprising-video-boogie-on-the-ds/">aimed close at the casual market</a> <span style="font-style: italic;">Boogie</span> (Wii) courted; rhythm fans might want to pass.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Boogie</span> (DS) copies rhythm game techniques, but it comes off as a casual, unfocused <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/elitebeatagents"><span style="font-style: italic;">Elite Beat Agents</span></a>. There were also a couple of Murlocs in there, even a baby version, but the icing on the cake has to go to the first guy in the video above. <br /><br />He shows off "The Origins of the Ogre Dance", and we have to say it takes guts to get up on stage and do this. Literally. Unfortunately, he didn't even win or place, which is a complete travesty. The guy was robbed. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16uW70RfT_s">winning entry</a>, which we didn't capture on video, was a guy in a Napoleon Dynamite-esque costume who wasn't half bad (he did the Blood Elf male dance, which is based on Napoleon Dynamite's famous move) ... but imitating <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xj1TZaypSY">Chris Farley's classic SNL skit</a> while at a fan convention for a video game is pure gold.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/blizzcon-the-dances-of-warcraft/">BlizzCon: The Dances of Warcraft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Aug 2007 21:00:00 EST. Even though some of us have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nintendo-media-summit-boogie-hands-on-wii/">played <span style="font-style: italic;">Boogie</span></a>, the title continues to confuse others. Today's video pick is the first time it made sense for this writer: instead of a dancing-and-singing game, it's a game where you control a dancing-and-singing puppet. Finally, the lack of direct correlation between controllers and avatars -- like left controller for left arm -- makes sense.<br /><br />It's still too early to predict <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/boogie"><span style="font-style: italic;">Boogie's</span></a> success, but at least we finally understand the basics. And it took us long enough -- the title is close to shipping, with an August 9, 2007 release. See the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/todays-finally-understandable-video-boogie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's finally understandable video: Boogie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/todays-finally-understandable-video-boogie/">Today's finally understandable video: Boogie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. We're hoping that with familiarity comes refinement: this may be the first direct sequel of a game released for the Wii, and thus familiarity with programming the motion controls may bring a more natural and elegant experience. If not, Ubisoft, prepare to get <em>market slapped</em>, because we're kind of getting sick of minigames.<br /><br />[Thanks, Squishey!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/20/raving-rabbids-redux/">Raving Rabbids Redux</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 May 2007 12:00:00 EST. Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ffv">Featured Friday Video</a> for this week shows off the new rhythm title in motion, and the best description we can think of is "spastic, but in a good way." Also on display: the characters, called Boogs, who can be customized (another EA game that uses cutesy customizable avatars, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/nintendo-raining-on-eas-mii-parade/">not</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Miis">Miis</a>?), and who <em>don't</em> all <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/22/ea-reveals-wii-exclusive-boogie/">look like</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/toejam">Earl</a>. <br /><br />The factsheet for the game mentions <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minigames/">minigames</a> (wouldn't be a Wii game without 'em) and a music video mode that lets players save their performances with added voice and custom camera angles and effects. Unfortunately, you have to check the site for the video, since we can't embed the Vooks player. We do have screens, though, after the break.<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/friday-video-get-down-boogie-oogie-oogie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday video: Get down, Boogie oogie oogie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/friday-video-get-down-boogie-oogie-oogie/">Friday video: Get down, Boogie oogie oogie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 May 2007 18:30:00 EST. The most shocking thing from his impressions is that it sounds really <em>innovative</em>. <br /><br />Rather than going down the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bemani">Bemani</a>/<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ddr">DDR</a> "push buttons in time with the music" route, EA Montreal has created an improvisation-based game where you use controller gestures to try to satisfy the audience with your dance moves. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nunchuk">Nunchuk</a> moves the alien guy's body while the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wiimote">Wiimote</a> controls where his head is pointed. Success in the game is a matter of using a variety of dance moves and somehow being "stylish." There are no onscreen indicators of what to push when.<br /><br />Our first instinct is to rail against the game for being too dumbed-down and lacking any of the precision of pretty much any other music game, but that doesn't seem to be the right way to think about it. This may be a game about dancing in time to music, but it is a different kind of music game. And until we have conclusive proof that it's not good, we're going to be excited about the prospect of EA of all people expanding our favorite genre.<br /><br /><strong>Note: you may have to scroll down to find this article: individual MTV multiplayer stories can't be linked.</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/26/boogie-gameplay-impressions-this-is-not-ddr/">Boogie gameplay impressions: this is not DDR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 11:15:00 EST. The new IP will take advantage of the Wii's unique controls, encouraging gamers to sing and sway along with the karaoke/dance game. The reports of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mic">microphone peripheral</a> for the Wii remote seem indisputable now, but we're puzzled as to how it will work since the nunchuck will already be attached to the controller's bottom port. <br /> <br />Players will be able to customize their characters and even "[star] in their own music videos." We're not sure if that means <em>Boogie</em> will allow us to import our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mii">Miis</a>, but it would be a criminal oversight if the game didn't. Judging by the screenshots released so far, it would pain us to hear that our character selection would be limited to <em>SpongeBob</em> rejects with chest hair.<br /><br />EA Montreal (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ssxblur"><em>SSX Blur</em></a>) is handling development for this Wii-exclusive game, and they expect to release the title worldwide later this year. Check out the first screenshots for <em>Boogie</em> after the post break!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/22/ea-reveals-wii-exclusive-boogie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EA reveals Wii-exclusive game: Boogie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/22/ea-reveals-wii-exclusive-boogie/">EA reveals Wii-exclusive game: Boogie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 13:30:00 EST. I think people are jaded about any game being about Hip Hop... but at least I do know that there are people who do make the genre respectable."<br /><br />Very true, Marco. It's pretty easy to get jaded over games that don't seem authentic, but <em>B-Boy</em> seems to be the real deal. It's a game that deserves a bit more attention than it's getting, if only for its unique premise: you play as a rising star of break-dancing, and you battle other b-boys to try and become the best. It looks pretty new and different, and <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/724/724563p1.html">according to IGN</a>, it "doesn't play quite like anything that's come before." The D-Pad controls movement, and the face buttons are used as the building blocks of moves. You string things together, and maintain balance using the L and R buttons a la <em>Tony Hawk</em>. There are transition moves, and increasingly complicated moves which require greater button combinations, and that's where a surprising amount of depth can come into play. Like extreme sports games, you can build up some impressive combos.<br /><br /><em>B-Boy</em> promises to mix music rhythm and sports gameplay into an innovative combination. Regardless, it's quite a bizarre advertisement, and one right in line with what you'd expect from the rather quirky series head honcho, Michel Ancel. <em>Rayman: Raving Rabbids</em> is currently slated for launch.<br /><br />[Update: Experiments have yielded conclusive test results; bunnies are completely unable to play soccer.
