In the latter half of 2009 and early 2010, Capcom released two major retail games in collaboration with prominent Western devs: <em>Crimson Skies</em> dev Airtight Games created <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>, and gun-for-hire Grin rebooted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bionic-commando"><em>Bionic Commando</em></a>. Those two games, however, were prominent sales flops. One even contributed to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/bionic-commando-developer-grin-closes/">eventual closure</a> of Swedish dev Grin.<br />
<br />
For its part, Capcom promptly returned to its tried and true franchises, with a lineup today featuring many more sequels than back in 2009. At the time, Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune was overseeing production on Capcom's retail titles, and when I spoke with him this past week at the Tokyo Game Show, I wanted to know what went wrong. Beyond sales, neither game was particularly loved by critics, especially <em>Dark Void</em>.<br />
<br />
"[It's] very, very simple: The publisher was Japanese and the developer was foreign. Even inside Japan, when you work in two different companies, they always blame each other for any small mistakes, so that's pretty much what happened in those two games -- blaming each other," Inafune explained. He went on to compare those development experiences with that of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-rising"><em>Dead Rising</em></a> -- a game that has since become a major franchise for Capcom, not to mention a commercial success.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/lets-play-the-blame-game-inafune-on-what-went-wrong-with-capco/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Let's play the blame game: Inafune on what went wrong with Capcom's original IP push</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/lets-play-the-blame-game-inafune-on-what-went-wrong-with-capco/">Let's play the blame game: Inafune on what went wrong with Capcom's original IP push</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 09:00:00 EST. If you're looking for Capcom-branded goods on the cheap, <a href="http://shop.capcom.com/store/capcomus/en_US/html/en_US/pbPage.Flash_Deal">the Capcom store</a> is having a limited-time Flash sale. For the next few hours, you can get the custom light-up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> statue seen above or a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenix-wright-ace-attorney"><em>Phoenix Wright</em></a> for the DS at a discounted price.<br />
<br />
The <em>Dark Void</em> statue was limited to a run of 1,000 made specifically for Capcom fan events. Normally it'd retail for $90, but it's only $30 right now; Phoenix Wright is half-off at $15.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/capcom-flash-sale-on-limited-edition-dark-void-statue-phoenix/">Capcom 'Flash Sale' on limited edition Dark Void statue, Phoenix Wright</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 May 2011 20:00:00 EST. The elegiac score accompanying Gabriel Belmont's action-packed emprise in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/castlevania-lords-of-shadow">Castlevania: Lords of Shadow</a> </em>has impressed the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA). Spanish composer Oscar Araujo is nominated for the "Breakout Composer of the Year" award -- notably alongside French duo Daft Punk, who pounded cinemagoers into Grid-grout during <em>Tron: Legacy. </em>The <em>Lords of Shadow</em> soundtrack is also one of five nominated in the "Best Original Score for a Video Game or Interactive Media" category.<br />
<br />
It's up against some stirring competition in the form of <em>James Bond 007: Blood Stone</em> (featuring Sega legend <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Jacques">Richard Jacques</a>) and <em>Dark Void</em>, which isn't usually written about unless it's in praise of <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/">Bear McCreary</a>'s distinguishing soundtrack. <em>Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole</em> earns a nomination, thanks to Winifred Philips, as do the themes of <em>Lego Universe</em>, assembled by Brian Tyler.<br />
<br />
Though the majority of awards focus on film soundtracks, the IFMCA's sentiment seems just as applicable to video games. "The IFMCA strongly feels that a film score's strength lies in the combined impact of two important elements: the effectiveness, appropriateness and emotional impact of the score in the context of the film for which it was written; and the technical and intellectual merit of the composition when heard as a standalone listening experience." Winners will be announced on February 25, 2011.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/12/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-soundtrack-nominated-for-2-ifmca/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Castlevania: Lords of Shadow soundtrack nominated for 2 IFMCA awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/12/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-soundtrack-nominated-for-2-ifmca/">Castlevania: Lords of Shadow soundtrack nominated for 2 IFMCA awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST. Anxious to beef up your iOS device's game library? Capcom's slashed the price on eight of its games, offering each for $.99 this weekend only. Here's the list:
<ul>
    <li>Resident Evil 4 (previously $4.99)</li>
    <li>1942: First Strike (previously $1.99)</li>
    <li>Mega Man II (previously $2.99)</li>
    <li>Dark Void Zero (previously $2.99)</li>
    <li>Cash Cab (previously $4.99)</li>
    <li>Cash Cab: Las Vegas (previously $1.99)</li>

    <li>Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2010 (previously $1.99)</li>
</ul>
If we had to suggest one, we'd have to go with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/dark-void-zero-landing-on-iphone-and-pc-april-12/">Dark Void Zero</a></em>, but if you're looking to <em>maximize the savings</em>, you can't go wrong with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-4"><em>Resident Evil 4</em></a>. Happy bargain hunting!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/24/select-capcom-ios-games-only-99-this-weekend/">Select Capcom iOS games only $.99 this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 06:00:00 EST. Was your avarice for discounted PC games not sated by Steam's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/steam-saving-users-from-oceanic-dangers-with-massive-saleboat/">Perils of Summer</a> sale? Capcom's currently running a 72-hour promotion, knocking over 50 percent or more off the prices of a handful of the company's PC titles. For a full list of encheapened games, just click past the jump.<br />
<br />
The highlights of this offer are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>, <em>Street Fighter IV</em> and <em>Neopets Puzzle Adventure</em>, each of which are now available for $14.99. If you're looking to capitalize on any of these discounts, then you should probably hop on over to <a href="http://shop.capcom.com/store/capcomus/html/pbPage.72_Hour_Digital_Sale?resid=TCY3dQoBAkgAAA8pSkIAAABF&amp;rests=1277572980566">Capcom's online storefront</a> sometime this weekend.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/26/select-capcom-pc-games-on-sale-for-72-hours/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Select Capcom PC games on sale for 72 hours</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/26/select-capcom-pc-games-on-sale-for-72-hours/">Select Capcom PC games on sale for 72 hours</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. <br />
Through June 1, the PC version of Airtight Games' jetpack-packed action game is available for just $9.99 on <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/GAMES/Pages/darkvoid.aspx">Games for Windows Live</a>. A price like that skirts the boundaries between "rental" and "purchase" -- it's cheap enough that you can basically get it just to screw around with the jetpack and not feel bad. It's almost cheap enough that you can get it solely for the purpose of "completing your <em>Dark Void</em> collection" should you already have <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/dark-void-zero-landing-on-iphone-and-pc-april-12/">Dark Void Zero</a></em>.<br />

The grizzly-named composer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_McCreary">Bear McCreary</a>, most famous for putting together the score on the recent <em>Battlestar Galactica</em> TV series, has <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=4304">announced on his blog</a> that he'll be composing the music for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/zipper-interactive">Zipper Interactive</a>'s upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/socom-4"><em>SOCOM 4</em></a>. <br />
<br />
McCreary previously did the scoring work on Capcom's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/8-bit-dark-void-zero-rocketing-to-dsiware-in-january/">8-bit spin-off <em>Dark Void Zero</em></a>), and for <em>SOCOM 4</em>, he says he's written, "muscially, a franchise re-boot," with over eight hours of original music featuring "ethnic percussion, virtuosic Asian stringed and woodwind instruments, and the spectacular, other-worldly tones of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamelan">gamelan</a>." Insert joke here about how that Indonesian ensemble's name actually looks like "game <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAN_party">LAN</a>."<br />
<br />
He also says that the soundtrack will fulfill his dream "of a video game score that would feel as if it were being composed specifically for each player, adapting and shifting perfectly to capture the mood of the individual gamer." Which sounds fun, but if we start hearing an orchestral version of "All Along the Watchtower" as our individual score, what exactly does that mean?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/27/battlestar-composer-bear-mccreary-scoring-socom-4/">'Battlestar' composer Bear McCreary scoring SOCOM 4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 May 2010 21:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> has made a real attempt in recent years to break down the firewall between western and eastern development, something it's still struggling with if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/capcom-calls-earnings-sluggish-over-last-fiscal-year/">"sluggish" sales in 2009</a> are any indication. But according to a <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/fy2010a.pdf">recent report</a> (warning: PDF link) circulated to investors, the company's still refining its approach and hopes to "create games faster by using a hybrid approach combining internal and outsourced development." <br />
<br />
According to the strategy report, that will translate to more new franchises from the company, -- something it hasn't had much luck with lately, with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bionic-commando"><em>Bionic Command</em><em>o</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Spyborgs/"><em>Spyborgs</em></a> all failing to perform exceptionally well either critically or at retail. Perhaps some of these new IPs will become downloadable, as the company says it plans on digitally distributing more games in fiscal 2011.<br />
<br />
Capcom also used the report to show high hopes for its upcoming slate of titles, with a projected 3.6 million units sold for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter-freedom-3"><em>Monster Hunter Freedom 3</em></a>, 3 million for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-rising-2"><em>Dead Rising 2</em></a>, 2.2 for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-planet-2">Lost Planet 2</a> </em>and 2 million for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/marvel-vs-capcom-3"><em>Marvel vs. Capcom 3</em></a>. That's certainly optimistic, considering the company's biggest seller in FY 2009, <em>Monster Hunter Freedom Unite</em>, sold 1.35 million copies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/capcom-fiscal-2011-strategy-shorter-dev-cycles-more-new-franch/">Capcom fiscal 2011 strategy: Shorter dev cycles, more new franchises</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 11:00:00 EST. The publisher's net sales for the year were &yen;66.84 billion ($751.35 million), down 27.3 percent from the previous fiscal year, and net income plummeted 73.1 percent year-over-year to just &yen;2.17 billion ($24.36 million).<br />
<br />
Capcom blamed the financial decline on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/capcom-pulls-super-street-fighter-iv-lost-planet-2-monster-hun/">the delays</a> of <em>Lost Planet 2, Super Street Fighter IV</em> and <em>Monster Hunter Tri</em> to the current fiscal year, though the company previously took these delays into account in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/capcom-game-delays-cause-lowered-2009-sales-forecast/">revised earnings forecast</a> last December. (On the bright side, actual nets sales did surpass the predicted figures by about &yen;1.84 billion.) In addition to the delays, earnings suffered from <em>sluggish</em> sales of <em>Dark Void</em>, <em>Bionic Commando</em> and <em>Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles,</em> which all failed to meet Capcom's expectations.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/capcom-calls-earnings-sluggish-over-last-fiscal-year/">Capcom calls earnings 'sluggish' over last fiscal year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 09:39:00 EST. <div style="text-align: right;"><small>[<a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/shana/blog/2010/01/18/the_mysterious_history_of_dark_void_zero!">Capcom-Unity</a>]</small></div>
As weird as an 8-bit style promotional DSiWare game made for a high-end next-gen game is, the weirdest thing about<em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dark-void-zero"> Dark Void Zero</a></em> is definitely the Jimmy Fallon connection. According to the fake history Capcom and Other Ocean concocted for the DSiWare game, a young Fallon won a contest in the '80s and won both placement in the fictional game and the only known copy of the title, which Capcom "tracked down" to port to DSiWare (and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/dark-void-zero-landing-on-iphone-and-pc-april-12/">iPhone and PC</a>, as well). We assumed it was just a desperate celebrity endorsement on the part of Capcom, but the truth is actually even weirder.<br />
<br />
Other Ocean's Mike Mika thought up the "contest winner" angle to make the game seem more authentic, but decided that having someone well-known win the prize would make it even more identifiable. Speaking to <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2010/04/interview_other_oceans_mika_ta.php">GameSetWatch</a>, Mika said "So, in this case, we worked on a game a while ago with Jimmy Fallon back with a company I was working for before Other Ocean. He's an incredibly smart guy who knows a lot about games. He knows a lot about computer engineering. And he had this game that he wanted to get made that was actually fantastic." <br />
<br />
The plans for Fallon's game with the other company never panned out, but Mika and Fallon kept in touch. "And I know he was a big NES fan, so when this opportunity came up, I was trying to find a way to legitimize the game a bit. I just emailed him and just said, "Hey. Do you want to be in an NES game?" I told him kind of what I wanted to do with it, and he totally went with it."<br />
<br />
Elsewhere in the interview, MIka discusses the challenges of propagating an alternate-reality history, as well as the real origins of <em>Dark Void Zero</em>.<br />

<br />
The reception for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/metareview-dark-void/"><em>Dark Void</em></a> may have been lukewarm at best, but the "8-bit" spin-off/marketing endeavor, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void-zero"><em>Dark Void Zero</em></a>, was <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/darkvoidzero">enjoyed by most</a> who played it. Realizing that such an experience <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/dark-void-zero-not-dsiware-exclusive-blasting-onto-iphone-and-p/">shouldn't be exclusive to one platform</a>, Capcom has announced iPhone and PC users can download the game starting April 12. <strike>Pricing has not been announced yet, so we're following up with Capcom on that.</strike> [<strong>Update:</strong> Capcom has confirmed it'll cost $2.99 on iPhone and $5 on PC.]<br />
<br />
And if you're holding out for Xbox Live and PSN, know that Capcom currently has no plans for those platforms. However, back during CES, a Capcom producer told Joystiq that they'd "love to do it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/dark-void-zero-landing-on-iphone-and-pc-april-12/">Dark Void Zero landing on iPhone and PC April 12 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 13:00:00 EST. We know we've already been diligent in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bear-mccreary">keeping you abreast of the status of Bear McCreary's</a> epic soundtrack for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>, so consider this our penultimate update on the topic: <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2010/02/09/dark_void_and_dark_void_zero_soundtracks_available_today!">The game's score is now available</a> to download through <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=352960075&amp;v0=9988&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D1">iTunes</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Void-Bear-McCreary/dp/B00319ECDS">Amazon</a> and a number of other retailers. It's <em>very, very good</em>. If you have some extra cash lying around, and enjoy the occasional non-lyrical musical offering, you should purchase it post-haste. <br />
<br />
In addition, you can consider this our final post in which we proclaim our musical man-crush on Bear McCreary. That is, until he reveals <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/10/another-video-game-soundtrack-to-suffer-bear-attack/">the next game he's working on</a>, at which point we'll probably pick right up where we left off.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/10/psa-dark-void-soundtrack-now-available-on-itunes-amazon/">PSA: Dark Void soundtrack now available on iTunes, Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Feb 2010 01:30:00 EST. The Rocketeer raconteurs at Capcom have <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2010/02/03/dark_voids_launching_new_dlc_and_soundtrack">announced</a> downloadable content for January's critical crash-and-burn, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>. Dubbed "Survivor Missions," the pack allows you to "relive key events" from the third-person shooter, modified by increasingly difficult waves of enemies and a points multiplier. Think: <em>Gears of War 2</em>'s horde mode, only you're alone and ... can turn into a plane?<br />
<br />
The DLC should be available on Xbox 360 next week, February 10th, at 400 MS points ($5). It'll land on PlayStation Network the following day, February 11th, for $4.99 -- that's one cent cheaper than DSiWare's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void-zero"><em>Dark Void Zero</em></a>. And if you're looking for even more ways to spend money on <em>Dark Void</em>, <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=1833">Bear in mind</a> the soundtrack, which launches on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/dark-void-soundtrack-taking-off-february-9/">February 9th</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/dark-void-plugged-with-survivor-missions-dlc-next-week/">Dark Void plugged with 'Survivor Missions' DLC next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. We've got a packed show this week with some details on our PAX East plans, some very non-embargo breaking impressions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect-2"><em>Mass Effect 2</em></a>, a Tip of the Week, and a brand new feature called "Spoiled Rotten," where we'll have a secret chat about a game exclusively for people that have solved that particular tape. First up? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Thanks to the incredible <a href="http://www.billmudron.com/">Bill Mudron</a> for the podcast art which, we're told, is comprised almost entirely of Omnigel.<br />

Though Capcom's jetpack-infused action title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> may be getting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/metareview-dark-void/">universally panned by critics</a>, one element of the game seems to be garnering praise from reviewers: Its <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=1833">Bear McCreary-composed soundtrack</a>. Thanks to <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/106/1062490p1.html">an announcement</a> from music publisher Sumthing Else Music Works, we now know when said soundtrack will get its own release: February 9. Unless, of course, that's when <em>Modern Warfare 2</em>'s soundtrack gets released, in which case they'll probably <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/capcom-delays-dark-void-into-2010-avoids-crowded-fall-game-sea/">push it back a little bit</a>.<br />
<br />
Personally, we can't wait to pick up the album, which will be shipped to retailers and available for purchase <a href="http://www.sumthing.com/index.aspx">on Sumthing Else's site</a>. Soon, we'll be able to sit back, close our eyes and listen to McCreary's orchestral jams without worrying about jetpacking into a cliff face.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/dark-void-soundtrack-taking-off-february-9/">Dark Void soundtrack taking off February 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 21:40:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/19/review-dark-void/">didn't love <em>Dark Void</em></a>, but with an average <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sb=0&amp;tfs=all&amp;ts=%22dark+void%22&amp;ty=3&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">metacritic score of 59</a>, it looks like the review sites just laid into Capcom's latest franchise attempt, despite its cool premise. The highest score so far actually comes from <em>Playstation: The Official Magazine</em>, which gave the game an 80. Here's what other outlets thought of <em>Dark Void</em>:
<ul>
    <li>Game Informer <strong>(70/100)</strong>: "Unfortunately, the shining strengths of the game are buried underneath a thick layer of rust that only the thirstiest of air-junkies should bother chipping through." [Feb 2010, p.95]</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3177649&amp;p=37">1UP</a> <strong>(C+)</strong>: "It begins with a fantastic introduction to flight, and ends with an all-out aerial dogfight followed by a suitably epic boss battle. ... It's just a damn shame that the nigh-amazing <span style="font-style: italic;">'</span><i>The Rocketeer</i> versus UFOs' premise crashes hard into 'tepid Gears of Uncharted knock-off' ground."</li>
    <li><a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/106/1061885p1.html">IGN</a> <strong>(50/100)</strong>: "I don't hate<em> Dark Void</em>, but I don't care for it, either. This is one of those titles that just exists; I doubt few will remember it this time next year."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/01/dark-void-review/">Wired</a> <strong>(40/100)</strong>: "Even though some stages (like the penultimate aerial battle) felt like they lasted forever and ever, <cite>Dark Void</cite> is a pretty short game with an anticlimactic ending that does little more than set up a sequel ... In all other respects, <cite>Dark Void</cite> was an ambitious project that just didn't make it off the ground."</li>

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void">Dark Void</a> </em>is a great first date, but a terrible marriage.<br />
<br />
As our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/hands-on-dark-void/">numerous</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/joystiq-hands-on-dark-void/">previews</a> will attest, this jet-pack-toting third-person shooter makes a fantastic first impression, with its breath-taking air battles and pounding score. But that just makes it all the more disappointing that even the faintest scratching at that surface reveals a wholly unsatisfying product below.<br />

You've got these people, downtrodden and stuck in The Void, trying to overcome what seems like insurmountable odds. Yeah -- been there, done that. But then you throw this jetpack into the mix and suddenly we're wiping the drool off our keyboard and rubbing the sleep out of our eyes, imagining all of the loop de loops and barrel rolls we'll be doing.<br />
<br />
But, hey, we identify with Airtight Games' plight; it's a start-up studio with a lot of new blood. It's kinda like the story of Joystiq's rise to <strike>fame</strike> being a site our mom reads on the gritty streets of the blogosphere. Just like Airtight, we had to eat a lot of government cheese in our first year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/15/dark-void-dev-diary-all-about-the-underdog/">Dark Void dev diary all about the underdog</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jan 2010 03:15:00 EST. PC gamers anxious to strap on a jetpack and hit the great blue yonder can finally do just that, as Capcom's released a demo for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>. The PC demo is available exclusively at <a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/209065/200000/fileinfo/Dark-Void-Demo-%28FilePlanet-Exclusive%29">File Planet</a> and weighs in at one whole gigglebyte. Just make sure you clear your schedule for the day, because if our own experience is any indication, your download is going to take some time. <br />
<br />
<em>Dark Void</em> releases on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bayonetta-360-ps3-jan-5/2577476/">January 19</a>.<br />

Like, it's <em>great</em> to know that we can choose between popping between cover points on the ground <em>or</em> fly through the air using a futuristic hover pack, shooting dudes as we float. However, who in their right mind would <em>ever</em> exercise the first option when the second is available?<br />
<br />
Check out the video above to see the dichotomy in motion, and don't forget: The only time you <em>shouldn't</em> go with the hoverpack is if there's an even cooler jetpack somewhere nearby.<br />

Nintendo's underpromoted service hasn't had the support of a major release, so its easy to understand why Capcom targeted the platform with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Void-Zero/"><em>Dark Void Zero</em></a>, the "8-bit" tie-in game due for release later this month. But while Capcom has found great success on the console platforms - including its 8-bit <em>Mega Man 9</em> - they don't have any plans to release <em>Zero</em> there. <br />
<br />
However, they do have plans for some other platforms. "We are actually going to be releasing on iPhone and PC, can't say exactly when but I'll say 'soon,'" a Capcom producer told Joystiq. "Xbox Live, PSN, I don't know yet. I would love to do it on those consoles." And there you have it: If you want to try and play a "very hard" game (her words) on your iPhone, with no physical buttons, you're welcome to do that "soon." We'll stick to the DSiware and PC releases, we think.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/dark-void-zero-not-dsiware-exclusive-blasting-onto-iphone-and-p/">Dark Void Zero not DSiware exclusive; blasting onto iPhone and PC 'soon'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 19:30:00 EST. Today's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/psn-thursday">PSN update</a>, the first of 2010, isn't exactly packed, but there's some good stuff in there. Check out the <em>Dark Void</em> and <em>Matt Hazard</em> demos. There's also the latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Borderlands/"><em>Borderlands</em></a> expansion pack, which takes players to the Underdome. On PSP, there's a whole lotta comics to download. Check out the full PSN update after the break.<br />

The demo, which promises "a combination of thrilling aerial dog-fighting, unique vertical cover action and on-foot combat," will be released Wednesday, January 6 on Xbox Live Marketplace and Thursday, January 7 on PSN. Wait, did it say we'd be fighting <em>aerial dogs?</em> Total nightmare material.<br />
<br />
Should you decide you like strapping fire to your back and hanging with old pal Nikola Tesla, the retail <em>Dark Void </em>game will be released on January 19. Expect the DSiWare spinoff, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/8-bit-dark-void-zero-rocketing-to-dsiware-in-january/"><em>Dark Void Zero</em></a>, sometime in January, as well.<br />

Capcom is expanding Airtight Games' jetpack adventure, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>, with side-scrolling DSiWare game <em>Dark Void Zero</em>. <br />
<br />
<em>Zero</em> follows Rusty, one of the first humans to land in <em>Dark Void'</em>s world, as he fights the Witchers with Nikola Tesla's help. Like Will from the next-gen games, Rusty has a jetpack, which can be used to hover in place or fly upward. <em>Unlike</em> the next-gen adventure, Rusty's fight is presented as a somewhat Metroidvania-style NES game, with graphics reminiscent of Capcom games like <em>Strider</em> and <em>Bionic Commando</em>.<br />
<br />
Rather than making a quick promotional game, Capcom seems to have gone all out for <em>Dark Void Zero</em>, recruiting <em>Dark Void</em> composer Bear McCreary to create an authentic NES soundtrack for the game. Capcom has also invented a fiction not just for the game, but <em>about</em> the game, portraying it as a lost dual-screen <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayChoice-10">PlayChoice-10</a> project. See a trailer and some <em>thrilling</em> in-game footage after the break. According to <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/darkvoidzero/news.html?sid=6244547&amp;mode=previews">GameSpot</a>, <em>Dark Void Zero</em> will be available in January for 500 DSi Points.<br />

The answer is, of course, entirely dependent on the <em>version</em> of Tesla we're talking about. Real-life Tesla stands a pretty good chance -- after all, that <em>debonaire</em> mustache is probably capable of disabling most electronic devices. The safe money's on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiRNDlNyKwk"><em>The Prestige</em>'s Tesla</a>, who was played by David Bowie, who can disintegrate any synthetic material using nothing but the power of his <em>rocking</em>.<br />
<br />
The Tesla in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> looks like he'd stand a fair chance as well. So, it put together this latest trailer for the game which clears up any confusion. Is it a puzzle game? No. Dating sim? Nay. RPG? Well, only in that you <em>play</em> the <em>role</em> of a guy with a jetpack who can do a whole buncha stuff, all of which is summarized with <em>big letters</em> and clips of the character doing what said letters say he's doing.<br />
<br />
If, after viewing the video, you're <em>still</em> not clear on what <em>Dark Void</em> is about, we suspect Capcom's next step will be to come to your home and demo it for you. Or it could <em>just release a demo</em>. Yeah, that'd work.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/11/dark-void-video-succinctly-summarizes-the-game-in-90-seconds/">Dark Void video succinctly summarizes the game in 90 seconds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Dec 2009 18:45:00 EST. Sure, Capcom's vertical-shootin', UFO-jackin', jetpack-flyin' third-person shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void">Dark Void</a></em> won't be landing on retail shelves until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/dark-void-touching-down-january-12/">January 12</a>, but the developer wants you to spend some time with Will (and <em>The Void</em>) beforehand. If you head over to <a href="http://www.jetpackattack.com">JetpackAttack.com</a>, you can create and play levels in your browser of a significantly pared down <em>Dark Void</em> spinoff game, <em>Jetpack Attack</em>. <br />
<br />
After blasting our way through the first level, we didn't exactly find ourselves thirsting for more, though it did (no matter how small the scale) sate our urge for some jetpacking action. And hey, if worse comes to worse, you could always <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/dark-void-pre-order-bonus-a-gold-jetpack/">trade it in for gold</a>, right?<br />

According to <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33448/Kim-Swift-leaves-Valve-for-Dark-Void-dev">Develop</a>, she'll be heading up a team of developers working on a "new, unnamed project" for the US-based company. Airtight prez Jim Deal says that he's "thrilled to work with Kim," and that "her addition to the team represents a strategic move ... into new and broader gaming markets."<br />
<br />
Swift's team will be tasked with creating "games aimed at a more diverse audience" -- a challenge Swift appears ready to handle. "I've learned so much and had some amazing experiences at Valve, but when I heard I had the opportunity to work on innovative titles with my friends over at Airtight, I couldn't pass it up." And now we wait (and <em>hope</em>) for the puzzle-based air combat game that's sure to come of this partnership.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/07/portal-lead-kim-swift-heads-to-airtight-games-for-new-unnamed/">Portal lead Kim Swift heads to Airtight Games for 'new, unnamed project'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 18:00:00 EST. No, this particular trailer instead focuses on the lush, otherworldly environments of Capcom's jetpack-strapped Q1 action title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>. Really, with a title like that, we expect the game's setting to be more ... <em>soul-crushing</em> than this trailer would lead us to believe. If that's a "dark void," our apartments are endless abysses of impenetrable blackness.<br />

Preemptively cutting off complaints that it strays too far from the source material, Capcom has announced a film adaptation of a game you haven't played yet: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a>, next year's promising third-person shooter from Airtight Games. In line with the agreement reached between Capcom, Reliance BIG Entertainment and Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment production company, <em>Dark Void</em> is primed as a "sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt."<br /> <br /> While the parties involved decide whether or not the movie is indeed the Pitt's, someone should probably point out that as far as starring vehicles go, <em>a jetpack</em> is probably the best one<em>.</em> Players will beat Hollywood to the punch and experience it for themselves when <em>Dark Void</em> lands on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on January 19, 2010 in North America and January 22, 2010 in Europe.<hr width="100%" size="2" /> <small><em><img width="40" vspace="0" hspace="8" height="40" border="0" align="left" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/bbc-trop000.png" alt="" style="padding-right: 5px;" /></em></small><em><small><em>Congratulations to <strong>Crusty Magic</strong> on being the first to comment. If you fancy yourself a would-be jetpacker, know that Capcom Unity is holding <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/s-kill/blog/2009/10/08/join_us_for_a_top_secret_dark_void_event">an event</a> to show off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> to San Franciscans this Monday, October 12. Before you get all giddy and start causing a scene in your cubicle/classroom/mom's basement, you'll need to do a few things:<br />
<ol>   </ol>
    <ul>
        <li>Make sure you can clear your schedule from 2pm - 7:30pmish on Monday, October 12 and you can get yourself to the downtown San Francisco area</li>
        <li>Be at least 21 years old and have a valid I.D.</li>
        <li><a href="http://capcom-unity.com/capcomcontest">Hit up this link</a> and drop a note stating why you should be chosen</li>
    </ul>
    <ol>       </ol>

Giving Tokyo Game Show attendees a chance to get some hands-on time with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/theyre-back-capcom-announces-dead-rising-2-for-pc-360-and-ps/">Western-developed <em>Dead Rising 2</em></a> at a party this week, Capcom's Keiji Inafune stated, "Japan is over. We're done. Our game industry is finished." <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bionic-commando"><em>Bionic Commando</em></a> producer Ben Judd translated the <em>Mega Man</em> creator's claims to the crowd (that <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/tgs-09-keiji-inafune-dumps-on-tokyo-game-show-2009-149909.phtml">Destructoid</a> captured on video, found after the break), explaining the eulogy as Inafune's reaction to the show floor at this year's TGS.<br /><br />Unsurprisingly, his words were less harsh about <em>his Japanese company's</em> upcoming titles. "Just so that you all don't think that the game industry is finished, Capcom is doing our best," he said. Next year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> and <em>Dead Rising 2</em> -- both Western developed games, mind you -- can't hurt Inafune's confidence, eh?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/keiji-inafune-says-japanese-game-industry-is-over-man/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Keiji Inafune says Japanese game industry is over, man</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/keiji-inafune-says-japanese-game-industry-is-over-man/">Keiji Inafune says Japanese game industry is over, man</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Sep 2009 16:30:00 EST. Bryant offered another, more content-related reason to <a href="http://kotaku.com/5341701/dark-voids-delay-explained-hint-it-has-to-do-with-hover">Kotaku</a>, presumably right before she <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/capcom-reveals-gamescom-2009-lineup-safety-hazard/">shot their correspondent out of a cannon</a>.<br /><br />"The main reason we delayed <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em><span class="autolink">Dark Void</span></em></a> was because we really wanted to spend the extra time we needed to re-polish it and add a new feature," Bryant explained. The new feature is <em>hovering</em>: by hitting the jump button twice, you can now hover in place, rising higher by continuing to hold the jump button. In happy news for people who want to <em>play Dark Void</em> without going insane with frustration, the damage model has also been tweaked such that wall collisions don't result in <em>instant death</em>.<br /><br />It actually sounds like we're <em>benefiting</em> from the <em>Dark Void </em>delay. Don't tell anyone, though! We don't want the few publishers who haven't moved everything to spring 2010 to think it's a good idea. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/">Dark Void</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/411356eb449ad782af36719bd4f95856_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523629"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/50754e2cf2bd475f88d5b3abc1bcca33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523628"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/44269dc9ed44092c8f0b5e930cc30481_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523627"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/bbf7958f5f13297368f053ffc63b7f20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523626"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/e2098c62f5f877346329942886883701_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/capcom-dark-void-delay-made-room-for-more-features/">Capcom: Dark Void delay made room for more features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. Capcom has dropped word on the titles it plans to feature at the GamesCom Conference in <span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial;">Cologne</span> later this month, and (for the most part) the games feature a hearty scoop of violence. Kicking things off with the oft-delayed <em>Dark Void</em>, Capcom will feature <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Tatsunoko-vs-Capcom">Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Monster-Hunter-Tri/">Monster Hunter Tri</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Spyborgs/">Spyborgs</a></em> for the Wii, along with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lost-Planet-2/">Lost Planet 2</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MotoGP-09-10/">MotoGP 09/10</a></em> for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.<br /> <br /> To promote the Rocketeer/alien battle simulator <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Void/">Dark Void</a></em>, Capcom is hosting an event in which attendees can take flight in the <em>Dark Void Body Flying Machine</em>, a rigged, vertically-oriented airstream shooting gamers into the air at speeds of up to 180km/h. Luckily, Capcom is also sponsoring taxis throughout <span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial;">Cologne</span>, so if something goes wrong during its "sounds like a tremendous idea on paper" <em>gamer cannon</em> event, attendees can make their way safely to the emergency room. GamesCom runs from August 19-23 in Cologne, Germany.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/capcom-reveals-gamescom-2009-lineup-safety-hazard/">Capcom reveals GamesCom 2009 lineup, safety hazard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. The pangs of despair we felt upon seeing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/capcom-delays-dark-void-into-2010-avoids-crowded-fall-game-sea/">the recent delay</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-void"><em>Dark Void</em></a> came in two distinct, yet equally heartbreaking flavors. For one, we became that much further removed from the title's jetpack-infused gameplay <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/hands-on-dark-void/">we've come to know and love</a>. However, almost as upsetting was the fact that we'd have to wait even longer to hear the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/06/battlestar-galactica-composer-previews-music-for-dark-void/">seemingly breathtaking musical score</a>, created by former <em>Battlestar Galactica</em> composer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bear-mccreary">Bear McCreary</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.machinima.com/film/view&amp;id=39293">Machinima.com recently helped ease the pain</a> by releasing a video interview (posted after the break) with McCreary conducted at San Diego Comic Con '09. It doesn't really feature any of the game's musical accompaniment, but provides us with an interesting look into Bear's creative process -- a process that thankfully extends further than "learn title of game, write entire score in one sitting, give music to developer, earn check, cash check, buy Jet Ski."<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/08/06/bear_mccreary_talks_dark_void_at_comiccon">Capcom Unity</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/bear-mccreary-explains-inspiration-for-dark-void-score/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bear McCreary explains inspiration for Dark Void score</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/bear-mccreary-explains-inspiration-for-dark-void-score/">Bear McCreary explains inspiration for Dark Void score</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. You know, when you're stuck in traffic and you think about changing lanes, but decide not to, reasoning with yourself that everyone else will and you're better off staying put? The lane to the left keeps moving and yet you stand still. So you go left and, what happens? Yup, you're stuck, while the right lane starts moving. Briskly. <br /> <br /> Capcom finds itself in just such a position today, as it announces the delay of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Void/"><em>Dark Void</em></a> into 2010 "in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season," the company's Chris Kramer tells Joystiq. The Airtight Games-developed jetpack-'em-up will find a new home in Capcom's fiscal fourth quarter ... which is the increasingly crowded Q1 2010 calendar period, which ends in March.<br /> <br /> Precisely what competition could Capcom be so afraid of? GameStop (of course, never an accurate reflection of actual release dates) listed <em>Dark Void</em> as <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse/search.aspx?N=0&amp;Ntk=TitleKeyword&amp;Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&amp;Ntt=dark%20void">touching down on September 22</a> ... the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/halo-3-odst-drops-down-september-22/">same September 22</a> in which <em>Halo 3 ODST</em> finally stops preparing, and just <em>drops</em>. When asked about the delay, Kramer said, "The move will be great for the game and for gamers: less competition in the market (curse you, Halo!), more time for polish."<br /> <br /> So, just to make sure we've got this right: Capcom avoided releasing <em>Dark Void</em> in the relatively open September '09 period to avoid a "crowded" gaming season, opting instead for 2010 ... the same 2010 that now houses release dates for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/delays,@breaking/">similarly delayed</a> <em>Splinter Cell: Conviction</em>, <em>Bioshock 2</em>, <em>Singularity</em>, <em>Bayonetta</em>, <em>Red Steel 2</em>, and probably <em>Mafia II</em> and <em>Red Dead Redemption</em>. Oh, as well as the already planned <em>God of War 3</em>, <em>Heavy Rain</em>, <em>MAG</em>, <em>Darksiders</em>, <em>Aliens vs. Predator</em>, <em>Alan Wake</em>, <em>Dante's Inferno</em>, <em>Mass Effect 2</em>, <em>Sin &amp; Punishment 2</em>, <em>White Knight Chronicles, Split/Second</em>, and Capcom's own <em>Dead Rising 2</em> and <em>Lost Planet 2</em>.<br /> <br /> ... boy, that right lane is looking awfully appealing again.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/">Dark Void</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/411356eb449ad782af36719bd4f95856_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523629"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/50754e2cf2bd475f88d5b3abc1bcca33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523628"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/44269dc9ed44092c8f0b5e930cc30481_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523627"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/bbf7958f5f13297368f053ffc63b7f20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dark-void-xbox-360-ps3/#1523626"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/e2098c62f5f877346329942886883701_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/capcom-delays-dark-void-into-2010-avoids-crowded-fall-game-sea/">Capcom delays Dark Void into 2010, avoids 'crowded fall game season' - that's it, we quit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 14:03:00 EST.
