We've received complaints about Xbox Live profile errors over the last week. Subscribers are prevented from downloading their profiles off Live, locking them out of the online network and purchased content. The code we've been tipped on the most is error "801540B7," but we've also seen a similar issue with "80070571," both relating to Live profiles.

We contacted Microsoft to find out if there was a common cause that we could report on and help prevent. We've only heard about these problems since the new Xbox Live dashboard became available earlier this month.

"We have recently identified an Xbox Live profile data error that results in Error Code '801540B7' for a small number of Xbox Live members. The error instructs users to attempt to re-download their Xbox Live profile and directs them to customer service support for further assistance," a Microsoft spokesperson told Joystiq. "We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our loyal Xbox Live members and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

If you've experienced error "801540B7," or a similar profile error, contact us and describe exactly what happened when the error occurred.
Microsoft aware of Xbox Live profile 'Error 801540B7,' working on fix originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 09:12:00 EST. For those of you in the Xbox 360 Dashboard preview program, some of this stuff is old hat, but for the rest of us today's launch of a dozen new applications on the Dashboard is all brand new. Beyond the addition of YouTube, FiOS TV, and TMZ (can we give that one back?), Xbox 360 users get access to MSNBC content, iHeartRadio (actual radio!), and a handful of other services starting today.

Though we expected as much, certain services are region-specific and will only be available to certain audiences (Rogers On Demand only exists in Canada, for instance, as it's a Canadian cable provider). Head past the break for the official list, regions and all.
Continue reading Microsoft launches YouTube, TMZ, FiOS TV apps and many more on the Xbox 360 today

Microsoft launches YouTube, TMZ, FiOS TV apps and many more on the Xbox 360 today originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 15:08:00 EST.

With Microsoft's Kinect-friendly Xbox dashboard update now available to the masses, it looks like users can expect a lot more Kinect functionality built-in going forward. That is to say that every future dashboard app will be required to have Kinect functionality, according to Kotaku.

We got the word directly from Microsoft. From now on, all apps must offer Kinect support in some form (and it may be optional for users). We were told by a representative, "With the new dashboard our objective is to bring the power of Kinect functionality to every experience where voice and gestures make sense." Controller support, obviously, won't be abandoned, but Microsoft wants to insure that "consumers can simply use gestures, voice and their controllers in a seamless way."

[Update: Adjusted the post to make it clear that support is required from developers, not users.]
All Xbox dash apps must have Kinect functionality going forward originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 10:50:00 EST.
Now that the new Xbox 360 Dashboard is out there, many are finding the new features don't extend to Indie Games. Sure, Indies haven't supported Achievements for a while, and there's always been a price ceiling, but it looks like Beacons don't work with them, cloud storage isn't supported, and new releases don't appear under, well, new releases.

It's all in the video above, provided by GameMarx. Even that new Xbox iOS app doesn't list Indies. Why is nobody thinking of the little guys?
New Xbox Dashboard features leave Indie Games in the lurch originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 01:05:00 EST. (Update: According to Major Nelson's Twitter feed, the dashboard update is being pushed to accounts in batches, and should be widely available over the next few hours.)

After Microsoft announced several new services would miss the December 6 launch of the Xbox dashboard update, it has revealed that another major component will also miss the planned launch, namely the dashboard update itself. Major Nelson tweeted the news, noting, "the timing for the Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed." Concerned citizens will receive a status update "later today."

Given the last minute nature of the delay -- so last minute that it didn't halt this morning's press release announcing the rollout -- we can't yet say for sure whether it's a matter of hours or days.
PSA: Xbox dashboard update 'slightly delayed' (Update - rolling out to subscribers now) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 10:03:00 EST. The long-awaited "Metro" update to the Xbox 360 dashboard is finally launching this week, but you might not want to make any popcorn just yet. A number of Microsoft's recently announced content partners won't be showing up to the party on time, most notably Comcast's Xfinity on-demand library, Verizon's Fios live-tv service, and the HBO GO app. Microsoft has given a nebulous "early 2012" release window for HBO and Xfinity, though Verizon should be bringing Fios to Xbox Live "later in December" - along with SyFy, UFC, and a number of others. A full list of partners, and when to expect them, is available after the jump.
Continue reading Xfinity, Verizon services miss this week's Xbox 360 dash update

Xfinity, Verizon services miss this week's Xbox 360 dash update originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 00:00:00 EST.
Though Microsoft's still mysterious Dashboard update is due to arrive in just under two weeks' time, on December 6, Big Redmond isn't resting on its money-covered laurels just yet. The company announced this week the acquisition of "video discovery technology company" VideoSurf.

What the what is video discovery technology and how will it "enhance" Xbox Live? "This holiday we will launch voice search across our entertainment partners on Xbox LIVE," Microsoft's Alex Garden said in a press release. "Over time, as we integrate VideoSurf's technology into our system, we are excited about the potential to have content tagged in real time to increase the speed and relevance of the search results." VideoSurf's back-end technology "'sees' frames inside videos," an ability that Microsoft appears to want to couple with the integrated Bing voice search coming to Xbox 360.

Just imagine, you can make your own streaming "World Funniest Videos" show with the following command: "Xbox, Bing people getting hit in the genitalia."
Microsoft acquires VideoSurf to 'enhance video discovery capabilities' for Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 22:30:00 EST. Despite a 2AM email announcing it, we managed to find out that December 6 is the big day for Microsoft's next Xbox 360 dashboard update. Major Nelson reconfirmed as much this morning on his blog, noting the variety of new features that the update will bring: cloud storage for games saves and profiles, beacons and Facebook sharing, "enhanced family settings," a more thorough set of voice commands with Kinect, and, of course, Bing voice search (US, UK, and Canada).

Beyond the new functionality, the Dashboard will see a visual redesign, and the introduction of "customized applications for television, movies, internet videos, sports and music" (YouTube, cable TV, and so forth). Frankly, we're just eager to keep talking to a machine instead of leaving the couch.
New Xbox Dashboard brings Cloud storage, Beacons, and more on December 6 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 09:24:00 EST. As expected, the new update to Xbox.com, featuring the new Beacons functionality to mark certain games you'd like to play with friends, has gone live and is now available to anyone with an Xbox Live account. The update looks clean and purty, and features not only those Beacons, but revamped friends and messaging functionality, and a nice quick interface for browsing through games and achievements.

And there's something else new on the page: The option, as seen above, to cancel your autorenewal subscription right there on the site. Previously, doing so was more of a pain, and you had to leave the site to go to Microsoft.com and do it, but now you can click through to your account and change any subscription settings right through Xbox.com.

A note of warning, however: Microsoft will put a few special deals in front of you as you click through, including a discount on the subscription designed to keep you around. But that's understandable -- someone's got to pay for the design money that went into this update. And speaking of update, where's that console dashboard update we were promised? Soon.
Xbox.com update is live, features Beacons and local Auto Renewal options originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 20:01:00 EST. Microsoft has posted that the Xbox.com website is getting an update "in the coming days" that will remove the "My Xbox" frontpage currently there now, and replace it with a "Social" section to make use of the "Beacons" feature eventually making its way to the console. Beacons are a way to mark which games you're currently playing or want to play, and are supposed to encourage you and your friends to set up times to play together on Xbox Live. Players will be able to set up three Beacons at a time, and add an additional comment as well, like "between 7-9pm PST" or "Horde mode only."

The website update will also make use of the "Metro" setup coming to the console's dashboard, and of course allow for access to the usual Xbox.com actions like redeeming codes, messaging friends and checking out their profiles, or browsing for and purchasing Xbox Live titles.

Officially, the console's Dashboard Update is still scheduled for a "Holiday 2011" release, though previous reports have placed it sometime right around Thanksgiving. With this update coming to the website as soon as next week, however, it's a good bet the console update is also close at hand.

[Thanks, Liam!]
According to a tipster, some Xbox Live users who received access to the Dashboard Preview Program today had another surprise waiting for them: early access to the Mass Effect 3 Beta. We haven't gotten official confirmation from EA yet, so we can't confirm with one hundred percent certainty whether or not this is really-real. The picture is, um, pretty convincing, though.

EA announced the Mass Effect 3 Beta/demo a short time ago, specifying that it would eventually be open to all, but available early to purchasers of Battlefield 3. We guess it didn't mean available earlier-est.

Update: Well, that didn't take long. Lightning fast posters over at NeoGAF have downloaded the client and have started posting pictures.
Continue reading Mass Effect 3 Private Beta live now for some Xbox Live users (Update: more pictures, more users)

Mass Effect 3 Private Beta live now for some Xbox Live users (Update: more pictures, more users) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 21:35:00 EST. After what appeared to be a false start, the Xbox Live dashboard is ready to be previewed by a select few of the platform's users. Major Nelson recently posted details about the preview program on his blog, announcing that the trial is currently accepting applicants to work out all the kinks.

The streamlined application system will let a few users access the newfangled dashboard well ahead of its official launch, and, better yet, is expected to let folks using the new dashboard continue to play and party chat with folks who are using the old dashboard.

This morning, Microsoft posted that it was accepting new users into the Xbox Live dashboard preview. This afternoon ... not so much (transition pictured).

After seeing the post this morning, we contacted the company to get specifics, as the registration wasn't working properly. Since then, Microsoft has altered the text and sent us the following statement: "Unfortunately we don't have any details to share at this time."

We'll take this as a case of "switch flipped too early."
After rubbing the sleep out of our eyes this morning and booting up the ol' Xbox 360, we were just as surprised as you were to see a serious looking system update. You know, the kind of system update that requires a special install window after rebooting the console? That one.

As Major Nelson informs us, the update is little more than "general system maintenance," and "no new features" (his emphasis) will pop up after updating. Well, boogie to that! Perhaps in late November, then?
PSA: No, that Xbox 360 system update doesn't contain the new Dash originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 10:30:00 EST. Tech site GigaOM reports that sources close to Microsoft have revealed a few bold changes currently being incorporated into the Fall Dashboard Update, which one would assume Microsoft would have locked down by now. According to the site, the "Lakeview" code providing the framework for the dash uses a modified version of Microsoft's Silverlight technology, which will incorporate the Kinect's voice and gesture-control schemes. The site also claims that Microsoft's newly contracted third-party content partners will use Apple's HTTP Live Streaming tech rather than the company's own Smooth Streaming software.

The site also claims that Microsoft will launch the update on Black Friday. We've contacted Microsoft for a comment on the claims, and hope that they're on the money -- anything that will keep potential deal-hunters out of the malls and on their couches is a welcome distraction in our books.
Report: Xbox Fall Dashboard Update set for Nov. 25, uses modified Silverlight originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 17:20:00 EST. Kotaku reports that a leaked internal memo from PayPal lists November 15 as the date of the new Xbox 360 Dashboard update. It's the one that refreshes the look and adds more Kinect integration, if you haven't been following all the menu news.

Why would PayPal be talking about the new Xbox dash? Reportedly, PayPal employees have been asked to test the new system, likely as it relates to payment options. PayPal support was added in the last Dashboard update, in the spring. We're contacting PayPal; if the people there truly have an interest in being our pals, they'll confirm the date.
Rumor: PayPal memo puts November 15 date on Xbox dash update originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 13:30:00 EST. A report earlier this month said that Microsoft's upcoming "Live TV" service -- part of the Xbox 360's upcoming Dashboard refresh -- would feature pay television service from the likes of Comcast and Verizon, who have 22.5 million and 3.8 million TV subscribers, respectively. Now, the far more reputable Bloomberg is reporting the same, citing "people with knowledge of the situation."

"Microsoft [...] is in talks with almost two dozen providers of music, sports, movies and TV shows in the U.S. and Europe, and may announce an expanded Xbox Live streaming service as soon as next week, said one of the people, who weren't authorized to speak publicly," Bloomberg reports. But it's not just Comcast and Verizon. Microsoft also "expects to sign deals with Time Warner Inc. (TWX)'s HBO cable channel, Sony Pictures Entertainment's Crackle streaming service, NBC Universal's Bravo and Syfy channels and Lovefilm UK, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)," one of Bloomberg's sources says.

Overall, Microsoft is "in talks with almost two dozen providers of music, sports, movies and TV shows in the U.S. and Europe" and it could announce the fruits of those negotiations "as soon as next week." Two of Bloomberg's sources say that existing customers of both Comcast and Verizon will only need to prove they are pay-TV customers to gain access to the services on the Xbox.
Bloomberg: Xbox Live getting Comcast, Verizon access; expects HBO, Crackle, Bravo, Syfy, Lovefilm, and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 11:38:00 EST. Terry Farrell, senior product manager of Xbox Live entertainment, is pretty excited about the new Fall Dashboard update. As the individual who partners with first and third-party video content providers, he's the go-to guy to talk to about Microsoft's future plans for offering video content. Too bad he couldn't get too specific with us.
Continue reading Xbox Live Fall Dashboard preview: From 'nonsense' to Metro

Xbox Live Fall Dashboard preview: From 'nonsense' to Metro originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 12:20:00 EST.

Sure, Hulu Plus may not be part of the public beta preview of this spring's Xbox 360 Dashboard update -- at least that's what Microsoft's saying -- but that doesn't mean we can't see what it may look like when it does launch, as scheduled, sometime in the next few months. Images sent to us by a trusted tipster show the Hulu Plus app in action (and being controlled by Kinect), as well as the revamped Kinect Dashboard.

Like the Netflix app, the Hulu interface resembles the Xbox Dashboard itself, offering a rotating layer of categories with selectable content. As for the updated Kinect Hub, it looks fairly similar to what is currently available on the Xbox, only it adds access to both Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Though our tipster doesn't know whether Hulu Plus will be added to the current public beta test of the next Dashboard update, our source did note that the application seems fully functional, as does Avatar Kinect (also not currently part of the preview). Our tipster said the Kinect-controlled Avatar showcase app wasn't especially exciting, but that "it was good at tracking my movements and the response time was pretty fast like everything else with the Kinect." Hopefully we'll find out for ourselves soon enough!

Gallery: Xbox 360 Hulu Plus and Kinect Hub beta, Spring 2011

Source: Take a look at Hulu Plus on Xbox and the new Kinect sub-Dash originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 15:20:00 EST. According to an Xbox Live profile allegedly belonging to one of the beta program administrators, both Avatar Kinect and Hulu Plus features are being tested. Both applications can be seen on the profile, though links to their respective Xbox.com listings appear to be broken for the time being.

Of course, it's possible that Avatar Kinect and Hulu Plus are simply undergoing internal testing at Microsoft and may not be part of the current preview program at all. Still, even if that's the case, the finding could signify that we may see these new features once the upcoming Xbox Live update goes public. We've contacted Microsoft for comment.

In further Xbox Live preview news, Joystiq has received several tips that participants have begun receiving their Halo: Reach preview discs. It doesn't appear that users are receiving retail, boxed copies of the game, but rather plain, boxed DVDs plastered with a warning not to insert the disc into a non-preview console. Using the disc in a non-preview console will result in said console being unable to connect to Xbox Live until the update officially rolls out to the public.

Check out images of the (admittedly bland-looking) disc in the gallery below

Update: Microsoft has informed Joystiq that neither Hulu Plus nor Avatar Kinect are part of the public dashboard preview.

[Thanks, Paul]

Gallery: Xbox Live Dashboard preview discs (Spring 2011)

Rumor: Xbox Dashboard preview testing for Avatar Kinect, Hulu Plus [update: Avatar Kinect, Hulu not part of public beta] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:10:00 EST. We're receiving reports that Microsoft is updating opted-in Xboxes with the new Dashboard preview ... and it doesn't do much at the moment. The most noticeable addition is a new "Xbox Beta" channel, containing three new titles: "Xbox Beta Program - Preview LIVE Update," which isn't clickable, "New Features" and "Help and Tips."

The "New Features" tab, according to tipsters, notes that test subjects will be divided into two groups: those who receive the update online (and will receive their free Halo: Reach later), and those who will receive the update via disc. Microsoft also told users that it is "finalizing the logistics to distribute the discs now."
A Digital Foundry source claims that the "new disc format" that Microsoft will implement in the next Xbox 360 update will free an extra gigabyte of the disc for game data. Where would you find an extra GB on a DVD? "The maximum space allocated to game data on the current disc format is just 6.8GB out of a maximum of 7.95GB on a standard dual layer DVD," Digital Foundry explains, "with over 1GB dedicated to a DVD-Video partition that also contained anti-piracy security sectors." That partition will be "drastically reduced or omitted completely" in the update, the source claims.

The site notes that this partition was likely located on the innermost part of the DVD, which is slower to access. Thus, it's suggested that developers taking advantage of the extra space will have to account for increased loading time.
Rumor: Xbox Dashboard update to add 1GB of DVD storage originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 09:55:00 EST. Major Nelson has revealed on his blog that Microsoft is preparing to conduct another seasonal Xbox 360 Dashboard "preview program," this time to kick the tires of an "updated Xbox 360 disc format." For participating, testers will receive a copy of Halo: Reach in addition to "other possible rewards."

Sign-ups are now open at Microsoft Connect, with Major Nelson saying that the company is "looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good." Unlike with last fall's update preview, there's no mention of this update prohibiting participants from playing online or voice chatting with Xbox Live members who aren't part of the beta program. The preview is restricted to US residents, though both Gold and "Free" Xbox Live members can sign up -- with Gold members given the priority come selection time.

As for the new disc format: Since it will need to remain compatible with current 360 disc drives, the update is likely just related to copy protection -- in which case, the free copy of Reach probably uses it. We've contacted Microsoft for more details and will update as we get them.
Latest Xbox Dashboard preview to test 'updated' disc format; testers get free Halo: Reach originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 16:01:00 EST. Sure, crazy workarounds existed (like, say, moving the cursor to "Play Disc" and hitting the A button), but what if you only have one thumb and limited time?

As promised, the functionality is returning this week. Major Nelson announced as much this morning, noting that, like before, the boot to disc option will be accessible via System Settings on your Xbox's Dash -- users will be given a prompt for said update.

Additionally, this Thursday, an update will be applied to Gamercards on Xbox.com. As pictured to the left, the yellow and light grey of Gamercards past will be replaced by a new black and dark grey color scheme -- we're calling them "Gamercards at Night" -- and they'll lose their "zone information." With any luck, a smoking jacket and pipe will be added in the coming months. A Gamercard's gotta accessorize!

The latest Xbox 360 Dashboard update didn't just make the Avatars taller and give you the ability to navigate its menus with your mind -- it also made the illicit enterprise of pirates just a little bit more difficult. According to Digital Foundry, the hardware now institutes a series of checks, which hackers refer to as "AP 2.5," that work in conjunction with "security sectors" embedded in the disc. If the checks come back negative, the player receives a "dirty disc" error and his or her console is flagged for permaban.
Pirates can hypothetically avoid these checks by not updating to the new firmware, though this will prevent them from playing on Xbox Live ... which kind of defeats the purpose of avoiding the permaban. Man, it's hard out there for a buccaneer.
New Xbox Dashboard adds updated piracy measures originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. A few of the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update's biggest changes have been heavily touted by Microsoft over the past few months: Things like a redesigned Zune Marketplace, ESPN streaming video and the power to control things with your <strike>mind </strike>gestures. However, a few of the update's lesser known functions were recently explained by Microsoft -- for instance, did you know that the update will improve voice chat quality, a more streamlined approach to connecting to wireless hotspots, and also, sometimes, your 360's disc tray will produce sizzling strips of hickory-smoked bacon?

To find out which one of those things we said was a bold-faced lie, check out the full list of changes coming in the next Dashboard update after the jump.
Continue reading Microsoft outlines changes and improvements coming in dashboard update

Microsoft outlines changes and improvements coming in dashboard update originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. Join us in our video preview of the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update. While Microsoft keeps the Kinect component under wraps, we've got plenty to show you: there's the promised ESPN content, updated Netflix functionality (now featuring "search") and, of course, the new Dashboard UI. Oh, and Avatars are looking a bit different and sporting some new features.
We had a peek at the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update back when the Kinect beta began, but the video after the break represents one of the most detailed looks we've seen so far. Apart from some aesthetic tweaks -- dig that swirly new boot sequence -- the interface remains unchanged for the most part. There are a few additions, notably the Kinect setup area in the system options with settings for the sensor, microphone, voice recognition and something called "Kinect tuner." The new dashboard is also rocking some new sound effects and, good news for theme hoarders, it supports current NXE themes.

The video also shows off the new Avatar editor, which has seen significant visual overhaul, featuring new menus that seem designed to accept Kinect hand gestures. The background music has also been altered and is now -- dare we say it -- a little more Kondo-esque.
Continue reading Video: Xbox 360's new dashboard, Avatar editor

Video: Xbox 360's new dashboard, Avatar editor originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 08:35:00 EST. That email purportedly sent out by Microsoft a couple weeks back inviting its recipients into a Kinect beta program? Yeah -- it was legit. Joystiq has received corroborating evidence confirming the program, including pictures of the promised Kinect-enabled Dashboard update running on a participant's retail console. In them, you can clearly see the flatter presentation, new mini-guide and revamped Avatar editor -- complete with a re-proportioned Avatar.

Our tipsters clearly didn't read the included guidelines, pictured in the gallery bellow. Apart from the laundry list of methods via which participants aren't supposed to talk about the program, there's confirmation that Kinect hardware is indeed part of the beta, "is being packed" and will presumably be on its way to testers soon. These same sources report that the beta support site mentions Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports and Kinect Joy Ride as titles they can expect to receive for testing purposes.

We'll have more on the program as its participants continue to refuse acknowledgment of Microsoft's terms and conditions. [Update 8/27, 9am: And we've got a video of the new Dash posted just after the break, featuring much more than the boot-up screen. Thanks, Bradley!]
You know how sometimes people go "away" for the summer, and then when they come back they look ... totally different? Well, Major Nelson's Xbox Live Avatar didn't go anywhere but has seemingly undergone one such full body makeover -- as evidenced by the above comparison between the bobble-headed likeness (via Xbox Avatar Life) we had come to associate with the Xbox Live director of programming and his current Avatar. It would appear that Major's Avatar and perhaps other "VIP" Avatars are the (beta) test subjects in a forthcoming effort to transform the currently cartoonish Avatars into -- to put it candidly -- virtual figures that would look a lot less goofy in a motion-controlled sports game.

Recently, Rare senior programmer Nick Burton told OXM UK that Xbox Live Avatars would be proportionally redesigned to better connect the physical movements of Kinect players to their on-screen Avatars. Presumably, this "Avatar 2.0" update would occur in time for Kinect's November 4 launch and possibly as part of the expected, annual fall update of the Xbox 360 UI.
The new trimmer Avatars are visible in Rare's Kinect Sports screenshots below.
French site Logic-Sunrise has posted shots of what appears to be a new version of the Xbox 360 Dashboard interface. This purported UI features a "Natal Tuner" application and a "Natal" setup process (which cutely directs requests for help to the @xboxsupport Twitter account). Since it hasn't been updated with the new "Kinect" title, these shots likely originate from an older dashboard build.

It makes sense for Microsoft to ready a new Dashboard -- the console has a new look and a new controller, so it only follows that Microsoft would take that last rebranding step for the next phase of the Xbox 360 life cycle.

Unencumbered by legacy Xbox support, this year's Xbox 360 Dashboard update promises to be a big one. And while E3 may have been a bust for those of us eager to learn about the bi-annual update, we are getting some information piecemeal, starting with last week's Hulu Plus announcement and now, this week, we have Destination Arcade, a "brand new recommendation engine & visual browser app" coming to Xbox 360s ... next week!

There's not much information on the new browser app, but we do know you'll be able to sort by price and community rating, find out about "the latest arcade releases through a news feed" (sort of like this one!) and, seemingly replacing a piece of pre-New Xbox Experience functionality, the ability recommend games to friends and see which games your friends have recommended. You can find some pics of the new service in the gallery below.
This morning at the PAX East Microsoft breakfast, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb revealed the 16GB Xbox 360-branded Flash drive from SanDisk. Available in May, the not-yet-priced device comes pre-installed with the April 6 Dashboard update for those who shun the connectivity of Xbox Live.

In a conversation with Joystiq, Hryb informed us that all data will be transferable to the USB device, except for installed games -- users will need to re-install those directly to the USB device once more. He assured us, however, that, "If you've got a 16GB and you only want to use 8, you can use the UI and throttle it back." Further, he reiterated to Joystiq that while this branded device is certainly one option, other Flash drives (including those larger than 16GB) will work in the same capacity.
Xbox 360-branded 16GB drives from SanDisk coming in May originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 11:00:00 EST. According to Microsoft, nearly two million Xbox Live users logged into Facebook through the console's new built-in social media applications. Based on a vague estimate provided by Microsoft, it appears that around ten percent of all Xbox Live Gold accounts used the application within its first week of availability; however, it's possible many of those users only logged in to see the new feature in action.

Microsoft also stated the addition of Last.fm -- a music streaming service currently only available for US and UK gamers -- prompted nearly one million new profile activations. In its first week, Last.fm users streamed "more than 120 million minutes" of music to their Xbox 360 consoles. Xbox owners: You have five days to start thinking of your lives and the lives of others in trivial, 140-character chunks. Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten has told Fast Company that the Dashboard update containing Twitter and Facebook integration will officially arrive on November 17.

If the date seems familiar, you're not losing your marbles: The specific timing for the update was revealed and reneged last month. Now, you'd better hurry up and beat the Chatpad rush at the store.
Facebook and Twitter coming to Xbox Nov. 17 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST. There was something of an outcry in the Xbox community when Microsoft announced that the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard Update would disable "unauthorized" memory units. Datel, a manufacturer of such devices, recently expressed its disappointment following the announcement. Fortunately, it looks like it takes more than that to keep a good company down, as Maxconsole.net reports that Datel intends to release a solution to the problem.

In a letter to retailers, Datel stated it was "aware of the changes that are required to remedy this problem and will shortly release a solution in readiness for this potential update." Naturally, the company didn't elaborate on the necessary changes. Datel also didn't supply a precise release date for the updated memory units, saying only that they would be available "shortly." Still, it's good news for folks that want more memory for less-than-exorbitant prices.
Those of you who woke up extra early this morning to get in precious alone time with your Xbox 360 (we understand - we do it all the time) may have been tricked when a mandatory system update greeted you in place of the dashboard. Alas, the much ballyhoo'd Facebook/Twitter/Last.fm update has not yet arrived, as Microsoft's Major Nelson points out on his site.

Instead, the update brings with it support for the now five-year-old WPA2 security protocol. With that new and improved 802.11n wireless adapter hitting retailers next month, and with WPA2 certification being mandatory for all new Wi-Fi devices as of March 2006, Microsoft seems to be rolling out that addition in software. That's good news for those of you with a four-year-old Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter!
PSA: Xbox mandatory update isn't 'The Big One,' adds WPA2 support for wireless adapter originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 15:00:00 EST.
