David Reeves, who "retired" from Sony Europe last year, will take up the Mega Buster at Capcom and charge up the publisher's European operations. Reeves states he had a "close working relationship" with Capcom during his 14 years with Sony. He will replace COO Mark Beaumont in the region, who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

Reeves was a very public and outspoken figure during his Sony days. He was also the executive who, back in 2007, kinda <strike>stole</strike> broke Sony's thunder by stating that the first PS3 price drop was actually a clearance sale. It'll be interesting to see how public a role Reeves takes with his new employer.
Former Sony Europe head David Reeves joins Capcom originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 21:00:00 EST. The speech "will provide a view of when online sales of games overtake classic retail distribution," Reeves told Develop.

It had been (wrongly) rumored that Reeves left Sony for a gig at APB dev Realtime Worlds, but we now know the hobbies he'll be taking up in his retirement: theoretical physics, quantum mechanics and watching The Big Bang Theory. We can't wait to hear how he manages to work those topics into a talk about online games. On his way out the door, Sony Europe President David Reeves believes the PS3 will be the market leader in three to five years. GI.biz's interview with the parting exec reveals his prognostication that the PS3's performance will be a "tortoise and hare situation," with the PS3 obviously representing the slow and steady creature from the fable.

Reeves restates that he is actually "retiring" and that we won't announce he's with a new company on May 1. He believes that he might do some stuff in the games industry, but he has no concrete plans. Right now, he's just going to "get some rest because it's been a very tough year."
Parting shots: Reeves expects PS3 to be dominant in 3-5 years originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST. Outspoken SCEE president David Reeves told CAPTIVATE audiences (including Eurogamer) that the upcoming Monster Hunter Freedom Unite would "spearhead the PSP resurgence of 2009." Big words, but considering the success of the game in Japan, it's not unwarranted.

To support Capcom's efforts in marketing the game to Western audiences, SCEE is planning a new PSP bundle featuring Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. While unlikely, we're hoping it'll be as awesome as the Japan-only special edition seen above.
Europe to receive Monster Hunter Freedom Unite PSP bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. Speaking to Develop magazine, Reeves has shot down those rumors, saying that he hadn't heard of the studio a week or so ago.

Now, that's not to say the rumors are necessarily untrue. Even if he had never heard of the company, it's possible Reeves was being lead there by a series of omens and portents, or by a spectral white wolf, vision-quest style. But even with our abiding belief in the paranormal, it seems unlikely.
Rumorong: David Reeves denies move to Realtime Worlds originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 12:30:00 EST. Reeves will be succeeded by Andrew House, the current Chief Marketing Officer from May 1. House has been at Sony for 19 years, bouncing between Sony Corporation, Sony Japan, Sony America and, now, Sony Europe.

"It has been a wonderful ride with PlayStation," said David Reeves. "I never got to visit all 106 countries but managed 66. I have just two things to say on leaving: I want to thank all of those people who have supported SCEE and me personally in the past 14 years; you have been magnificent!" Likewise, Andrew House is "delighted to return to the PlayStation fold and excited to take on this new challenge. I have strong ties to the interactive entertainment industry and I believe there is huge potential for further growth of our business in the Europe/PAL countries and regions, particularly in the area of networked entertainment."

We wish David Reeves good luck on his future endeavors and look forward to seeing how things change under House's leadership. Commenting on Sony's third-quarter losses, Reeves says that "we simply have to suffer a little, go down in market share and mind-share. We're still standing, we're still profitable and there's a lot of fight in us." Reeves' humility makes a refreshing change from other Sony representatives.

Reeves goes on to say that the company's PS3 sales forecast is still 10 million by March and clarifies why there was no PS3 price cut this year. "My objective is financial - to make a profit in our territory by the end of March, and we will. If we'd cut the price, lost another billion dollars, we might have had a huge Christmas but it would have been followed by a huge loss." Claiming that Sony has learned things from both Nintendo and Microsoft this generation, he feels "we should celebrate the industry and how we've collectively grown it beyond all recognition." There's not a hint of any "console war" mentality to be found.

Reeves also confirms that 45nm Cell chips will replace the 65nm versions currently inside the PS3, "probably in middle of year," and that downloadable movies will be available in PAL territories later this year. Both will increase profits for Sony and the former may even pave the way for a price cut later in the year. Here's hoping.

[Thanks, Josh]
'We simply have to suffer a little,' says Sony Europe's Reeves originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 10:21:00 EST. Unless you resort to more unconventional methods of console acquisition, the PlayStation 3 is going to run you a bit more than the 360 and Wii. It's always been that way -- and according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves, it's going to remain that way for some time to come. His reasoning? The only way for Sony to weather the current financial squall is to protect themselves -- "It's like being an armadillo," Reeves said, in our favorite simile of 2009 thus far.

Reeves told Eurogamer that Sony isn't denying the possibility of a PS3 price cut, stating, "It is possible that as the cost [of manufacturing] comes down, we will be able to do it," though there are no explicit plans to do so. For the time being, the PS3 will remain on top of the price point totem pole -- unless Nintendo decides to double the price of the Wii, which due to the grim forces of supply and demand, it could ostensibly get away with.
Sony: PS3 will remain most expensive console originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 16:26:00 EST. With regards to exclusive games, Reeves toed the company line, stating that "you can't live on exclusivity forever; in the end, you've got to be master of your own destiny."

By investing in third-party partnerships -- and first-party acquisitions like Guerrilla Games -- Sony removes the need to rely on publishers for exclusive content. "We don't have to go to Capcom or Take-Two and ask for an exclusive. And I don't think we could afford it anyway. In the cold light of day, I would do exactly as those publishers have done and go multi-platform." When asked about any unannounced PS3 titles for later in the year, he indicated that "there are a couple." Look for those to be announced soon, possibly in "the next four to six weeks."

Reeves goes on to discuss the PSP, saying that the system's need for "better and more original games" has not yet been met, but that "the line-up for PSP in 2009 is two or three times stronger than it was last year." It sounds promising, especially considering the number of great Japanese games that are in development for the system. Hopefully we'll see them heading West this year, too.
David Reeves talks exclusivity, unannounced games and PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 11:58:00 EST. This time, it's not an analyst that's predicting a PS3 price drop. It's the competition. Microsoft's outspoken Aaron Greenberg has been celebrating the tremendous success of Xbox 360, which currently leads PS3 by more than 8 million units worldwide. Obviously, part of the 360's success comes from its competitive price. In America, the cheapest 360 is half the price of the cheapest PS3. However, Greenberg doesn't believe the price difference to be as substantial in the future. "We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months. We're frankly surprised it's taken this long. ... I would expect they'd have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure."

Certainly, a lower priced PS3 would have helped the install base during an economically depressed holiday season. However, SCEE's Reeves said very frankly on the PlayStation site that "the most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money. This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve."

With the cost of manufacturing a PS3 plummeting, it won't be long until PS3 units can be sold at a profit. "Once we have achieved this, I think it will be a very exciting time for PlayStation. Once we have alleviated that specific pressure, we can move forward at a rate of knots," Reeves promised.
Microsoft expects PS3 price cut soon, while Reeves reiterates profit mantra originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 10:10:00 EST. Step 1: Release PlayStation 3.

Step 2: ?????

Step 3: Profit!

David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, believes that Sony is "on target" to figure out that elusive second step. "The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money," Reeves explained rather candidly in a recent article on the official PlayStation website. "This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve." His tone was considerably more positive than one adopted by recent rumors, which have Sony on the "brink of upheaval."

Quizzed -- or rather, politely asked to contribute in a promotional piece -- about 2009's most exciting developments, Reeves noted that once the company's flagship system is out of the financial woods, things will really take off for PlayStation and its fans. "2009 promises to be a very exciting year for PS3, with blockbuster titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 coming out, whilst we have the music and video download service becoming available towards the end of the year," he said. And don't forget about our pal, the PSP, which will have games taking "full advantage of the new enhanced screen."
Reeves: PlayStation 'on target' to start earning profit originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 09:35:00 EST. In an interview with Dutch economics program RTL Z, Sony Europe president David Reeves speaks about the economic crisis and how it relates to the video game industry in Europe. Reeves is quick to state that the industry is not recession proof, but that there is no visible slowdown. He postulates that consumers are putting the recession to the back of their minds over Christmas, or that they are choosing to stay at home more and, as a result, are spending money on home-based entertainments, such as video games.

Reeves also states that within Sony Computer Entertainment Europe there will be no personnel or development cutbacks. "We don't have many personnel to cut back. Half our personnel are in the development of the games. That's an investment. We're not scaling down at all." Good news for first party developers; it looks like their jobs (and the games they are developing) are relatively safe.

Reeves goes on to say that while the Christmas period is showing no visible evidence of the recession, he expects sales to dip once the new year begins. At which point promotions will be introduced on software, either via Sony or via retailers themselves. Will this spread to a hardware price cut sometime next year? Let's hope so. As far as future development goes, Reeves sees more in software than hardware. Not necessarily games, but also user interfaces, PlayStation Network enhancements, Home, etc. Check out the full interview for plenty more interesting views from the SCEE chairman.

[Thanks NewDust]
Reeves: no personnel or development cutbacks due to recession originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 09:30:00 EST.
We hope you're content with the current PSP, scanlines and all. While most hardware makers have historically begun R&D on their next generation platforms just as - or even before - the current generation is hitting shelves, SCEE president, David Reeves, has said that Sony is not currently planning a PSP 2.

Interviewed by MCV, Reeves admitted that, "there are currently no plans for a PSP2," adding, "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment."

Reeves also addressed the thorny issue of PSP software (or, more specifically, the lack thereof), saying, "[PSP's] weakness...is its software." PlayStation's European boss chalks the situation up risky business, explaining of developers that "when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP." He did not offer any details of how Sony is (hopefully) working to change this. Mr. Reeves, sir, you're not exactly instilling us with confidence.

SCEE president David Reeves has revealed that internal Sony numbers indicate the PlayStation 3 is "300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360" in the PAL territories. This is in response to Microsoft claims that the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Europe. Note that both statements can be true: the 360 could be outselling the PS3 in the recent months but the total tally would show that Sony's console is still ahead.

Furthermore, Reeves disclosed to MCVUK that there are no price cuts planned for the near future. "No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either." This echoes what SCEE told Eurogamer late last month. "As soon as we got the manufacturing price down on PSOne we lowered the price. Same with PS2. But we're not doing that on PS3 -- that's not the model, even if people are expecting it." Sony Europe has declined to comment on a rumor that the PS3 will receive a price cut in March 2009. The whole ball got rolling by website D+Pad, which allegedly had a "source" in attendance at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing in London. The source claimed:

The PS3 will see a price cut in Europe around March of next year.

The PSN has generated £150 million in 2008, will receive more investment and is considered a success.

LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm are coming to PSP.

Uncharted 2 looks like Uncharted, which isn't a bad thing.

God of War 3 was "masterfully shown at the end" and looks really good. (A similar claim made by former GoW honcho David Jaffe.)

Now we just wait and see how this "rumour and speculation" pans out.

[Via Eurogamer]
Rumor: Sony Europe planning PS3 price cut in March, details future games originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 11:40:00 EST. When we spoke with SCEA president Jack Tretton during E3 about Final Fantasy XIII going multiplatform in the US, he was quite frank about the impact the game's PS3 exclusivity in Japan would (or wouldn't) have for the company. "Seeing as there isn't that big of a [PS3] installed base in Japan, I don't know how big of a coup that is for us," he admitted.

Across the Atlantic, Sony Europe boss David Reeves seemingly gets his Japanese PS3 sales figures broken down by individual components. Speaking with VG247 during last week's Leipzig Games Convention, Reeves said, "I think that just as we got a massive blip up with GTA IV - which was not exclusive - we'll get exactly the same blip up with Final Fantasy," adding that, "I know [FFXIII] will look great on PS3 and - it's up to Microsoft to clarify this - it's still exclusive in Japan."

While we're still betting on higher sales of the PS3 version over the 360 release domestically, it really seems as if Reeves is living in the mid- to late-1990s, when Japan was still SCEI's most important territory. Times have changed, Sir.

[Update: Corrected a Sony exec mix-up. PlayStation Europe boss David Reeves is on the verge of extending the long arm of Sony onto the mat and tapping out -- exclusivity is just getting too darned expensive. "I think we have to accept that exclusivity is not a thing of the past, but it is probably with publishers," Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz in a recent interview. Of course, Reeves is only referring to the millions upon millions of cash money papers console manufactures might be expected to fork over to a publisher for exclusivity these days. There is still hope in striking deals with developers that haven't been scooped under a corporate umbrella. (See Quantic Dream, for example.) "[Developers] need a little bit of funding, external development," Reeves explained, "In exchange, it's exclusive -- that works."
Sony doubtful about future exclusivity with publishers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 17:00:00 EST.
David Reeves, president of SCEE, discussed his views on exclusives in an interview with GameIndustry.biz. Reeves believes that an enticing software lineup is more important than price in terms of promoting hardware sales. How does he plan to secure this lineup, more specifically exclusives? By "investment in our own intellectual properties -- as particularly Phil Harrison and I tried to do in the last five years with SingStar, or with The Getaway, or with Buzz! ... It's like a patent. We can take them forward."

Reeves states that he is aware of the situation where publishers "cannot have exclusives unless they're given millions and millions of dollars not to develop a particular game for one particular platform." Instead, Sony plans to work with developers instead. He cites Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, which he proclaims a "platform driver," as an example: "a great game, it takes a lot of time to develop, they need a little bit of funding, external development. In exchange, it's exclusive -- that works."

The Sony exec doesn't completely discount the possibility of an exclusive with publishers though. "We have to accept that exclusivity is not a thing of the past, but it is probably with publishers. We might do a few things, where we feel that we need a push here or a push there." What are your thoughts? Is it possible to secure exclusives with publishers without the aforementioned "millions of dollars"? Is establishing relationships with developers like Quantic Dream key to the PS3's success?

Sony's E3 press conference, whilst exciting for PSP owners, was lacking anything particularly tasty for PS3 owners. Barring MAG, there wasn't anything there were weren't already expecting. Speaking to MCV, Sony Europe boss David Reeves has stated that this was a strategic decision. "We cannot tailor all our announcements to July," he says, adding that utilizing E3, the Leipzig Games Convention and the Tokyo Game Show allows them to spread their big announcements out, building hype as they go.

With that said, Reeves promises that the Leipzig Games Convention next month will include some "blockbuster stuff." These announcements won't just be Euro-centric, but will also have a global impact. We already know that Heavy Rain is due to be shown off at the event, but the promise or more announcements has us intrigued. We look forward to finding out more next month.
David Reeves promises an announcement filled Leipzig originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. Since E3 has ended, Eurogamer thought it would be nice to catch up with Reeves and grill him with several questions that many consumers are curious about. We'll go ahead and summarize the interview, but if you'd like to read it in full, you're very welcome to do so.

SCEE has only now accepted the 80GB SKU for European territories because it finally reached a price they thought would be acceptable to consumers. This bodes well for the 'console war', but even more importantly, Reeves declares, it can only serve to grow the market even more for everybody. He makes an airplane analogy, too. It's pretty awesome and weaves itself into the rest of the interview. For example, first-party titles are the "landing lights" for the PS3.

European launches, like titles for the PlayStation Network, generally don't release at the same time in the UK and, say, Australia. Reeves says they are working on that and some titles coming up will have much closer releases between the European and Australian areas. Things like Home, he said, are coming along nicely now that they have a more realistic and less idealistic view of how the application should play. All in all, he's got faith that the PS3 is going to see a great second half of the year, it seems. Do you?
David Reeves likens PS3 to airplanes, explains 80GB SKU acceptance originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST.
Those of you who are thinking of using LittleBigPlanet as your ticket to champagne wishes and caviar dreams after reading our last post might want to rethink your plans. "SCEE and Media Molecule can guarantee that all consumer-generated content will be free at launch. We know how important this is to the LBP community and what we want most is for people to enjoy playing, creating and sharing their content," SCEE told Eurogamer after being notified of David Reeves' statements. They emphasized that Reeves "was talking about how user-generated content could potentially evolve in the long term" and that any future direction of LBP "will include the community and focus purely on enhancing the user experience."

Adding to the confusion, last month at GDC Paris during a keynote presentation, Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healey said "that's a fantastic idea" in response to a question of whether LBP user-generated content can be sold.

We think having the option of selling user-generated content, if implemented correctly, can be positive for the community. So did Reeves reveal something he wasn't suppose to yet? Can we kiss charging for LBP content good-bye?

What's a better incentive to create a level in LittleBigPlanet than good, hard cold cash? According to recent comments by David Reeves, president of SCEE, that's what's planned for the upcoming community-driven platformer. "What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them," Reeves notes. "Eventually, it's feasible that you might well see the first LittleBigPlanet millionaire!"

It appears that how much creators can charge for content is also user-determined. "Even if you charge less than one euro, it doesn't take many downloads if you've got a really strong LittleBigPlanet level for people to be able to make money. It's a great way for people to show others what they can do." This may give aspiring level designers a chance to not only show off their creativity, but turn their skills into profit.

Eurogamer had a long chat with David Reeves at the SCEE event yesterday, and discussed Europe's "day and date" releases for the PS3's upcoming library for the rest of the year. He also mentions the 2009 lineup, mentioned that "coming in spring will be inFamous and MAG, and God of War [3] will be coming later in 2009," giving a vague indication of when we can expect to see the newly announced MAG. Something that wasn't mentioned at the Sony Press Conference.

With inFamous, MAG and God of War 3 all appearing in 2009, the year is shaping up quite nicely. But will they all really make it? And will MAG really launch with such a ridiculous name as Massive Action Game? We'll find out in a year.
MAG could be available as early as Spring 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 13:00:00 EST. Many European gamers have been frustrated by the inexplicable delays of games in Europe. Yes, there are localization issues, but when a title like echochrome, which features very little text, releases weeks after its American counterpart, people seemingly have the right to complain.

Grilled at a recent E3 cocktail, SCEE boss David Reeves told Eurogamer that "every relevant title that SCEA announced for America will also be introduced to the PAL territories - most of them day and date." Does Microsoft's upcoming Lips (pictured above) scare the SingStar team? Doesn't seem to phase them a bit, it seems. Speaking at a E3 cocktail, SCEE rep David Reeves promised we'd see a "the next generation of SingStar" at the Leipzig Games Convention later this year.

What could that possibly mean? Are we seeing a brand new game in the SingStar franchise, or are we going to see a game-expanding patch? For those of us that have spent quite a bit of money in the SingStore, we'd like to see the latter.
The 'next generation of SingStar' will debut in Leipzig originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. Backing up the claim, Reeves stated: "The PS3 install base is growing faster than the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle." Currently, the PS3 is around the 13 million mark in worldwide sales after having launched back in late 2006 -- that's ten percent of the PS2's current lifetime sales and six years to play catch up.

"The next five years are going to be turbulent. But I think it is going to be the most exciting period that we have ever seen in the past ten years of videogames," he added. With a recent big exclusive just released and many more on the way, we're not surprised by Mr. Reeves' confidence. However, that confidence isn't cockiness, "We welcome all competition. Whatever happens, we are all going to do well. We should celebrate the growth of the industry." We're happy to see such optimism and goodwill, and we'd like to see Mr. Reeves' predictions come true. We still think, however, the PS3 has a long way to go in proving itself to its older brother the PS2.
PS3 set to beat PS2 lifetime sales says Reeves originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 14:00:00 EST. "There is a piracy problem on PSP," Reeves told an undoubtedly shocked MCV. "We know about it, we know how it's done." Ah, so they have internet access then.

It's not all bad news, however, as Reeves pointed out that piracy "sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales," even if, "on balance," it makes Sony unhappy. PSP sales have given the manufacturer a lot to smile about, especially in Japan, but piracy takes its greatest toll on software, an equally important source of income. According to Reeves, new plans are already afoot to clamp down on digital swashbucklers, though given how quickly said plans are usually foiled, we imagine new strategies (and firmware updates) are constantly required.
Sony planning new clampdown on PSP piracy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. According to MCV, Reeves admits that piracy has fueled hardware sales, and of course "we are not happy about it." He told developers at the conference that Sony will "unveil new ways to combat piracy soon." But exactly how? We're not sure.

This is quite possibly the first time a Sony exec has directly addressed the issue of piracy on the platform. Perhaps this is the signal of a more aggressive Sony attempting to reclaim the platform.
Sony Europe boss promises new ways of fighting piracy on PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 08:52:00 EST. After the release of Crisis Core and God of War, things have slowed down quite dramatically for the handheld. Exclusives for the PSP are few and far apart, with releases of Secret Agent Clank and Hot Shots Golf being but a few known titles that will release in the upcoming summer months. SCEE boss David Reeves admitted that software has slowed down on PSP. "Hand on heart, would we like more PSP games? Yes, we would. We really would," Reeves told GI.biz.

Where and when will we see new games? It looks like we're going to have to look towards Japan, where PSP has become something of a phenomenon. The success of PSP in Japan has created a resurgence of PSP development -- localized versions of upcoming Japanese games is what we'll have to wait for. "We've seen in the last six months that because of the success of the PSP in Japan many Japanese developers have got some absolutely phenomenal games. They're not Monster Hunter 2G or things like that, but they are in development and we'll see them over here," he added.
Sony's David Reeves admits to PSP drought originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 May 2008 13:30:00 EST. In a short discussion with CVG, Reeves admitted they've "realized that maybe we were too ambitious with the non-gaming applications within Home, getting sponsors and stuff like that ... in that sense we were deserting gamers. So, we're concentrating on the gaming by launching games in Home, and attracting people who are into gaming in first -- instead of the Nike people, or Adidas people who are into fashion and not necessarily into gaming."

This is interesting because we've always heard how one of the futures of advertising may be within video games. Now Reeves and Sony see that perhaps focusing on that isn't the right approach -- you need to fill a store with people before you can sell anything, after all. Sony is now refocusing their strategy on things like Trophies and Home-to-game launching, so expect more of that when the open beta hits this year, another thing Reeves promises. The beta will come this autumn. For sure. We'll see.
Home's non-gaming plan 'too ambitious,' admits SCEE's Reeves originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 May 2008 17:30:00 EST. While confirming Home will "definitely be coming out in Autumn," SCEE president David Reeves said that "maybe we were too ambitious with the non-gaming applications within Home, getting sponsors and stuff like that." In an interview with CVG, Reeves continued to say, "In that sense we were deserting gamers. His mind has calculated a possibility for "official" Sony external hard drives. We find that a little odd because Reeves even reminds us that the PS3 has an easily replaceable hard drive already: "The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, of course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive." So why external hard drives? Maybe people are scared to crack open their PS3. Maybe they don't have anywhere to dump all the information before switching the new hard drive in.

Any external hard drive, as far as we can tell (using a 120GB Western Digital currently -- it's old) works already. Reeves said there's no rush for this idea, though. "We've played the games with the hardware, with different hard drives and things like that, and we want to keep it very, very simple. We know that works." What do you guys think? Would you grab an official external, get a third-party, or just slap a new laptop hard drive direct into the system? Those of you who've done the latter, how has it worked since?
Official Sony external hard drives a possibility originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. SCEE President David Reeves has indicated that PlayStation 3 owners may be able to enjoy some Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content, after all. Speaking to VideoGamer at yesterday's PlayStation Day, Reeves said, "Well I think you probably will see it, it's just that a deal obviously was struck between Microsoft and Take-Two to do that, and if that's what they want to do, I think that's the last shot they have."

Of course, executives are known for their superhuman ability to talk a lot of hot air, and Reeves is no exception. The deal Reeves refers to is the $50 million Microsoft reportedly gave Take Two for exclusive GTAIV "episodes." It's unclear if Reeves is hinting at that DLC coming to Sony, entirely new DLC (also of questionable exclusivity) or absolutely nothing tangible at all.
SCEE President: 'You will probably see' GTAIV DLC for PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. PlayStation Day, a press-only event in London, takes place on the 6th of May. The press conference at the event will be hosted by Kaz Hirai and David Reeves (President of SCEE) and will no doubt include some interesting announcements. We'll be there to give you up to the minute news as it happens.

To celebrate PlayStation Day, the European PSN Store will be updated twice next week. Once on Tuesday and once on Thursday. Those of you who have become disheartened with the European PSN updates might want to take special note to this line-up. In total you can expect to see four demos, three full games and five add-on packs spread across the two updates. Plus a nice collection of videos, including the PlayStation Day press conference itself, hosted by Kaz Hirai.

Check out the full list of content for Tuesday's update below. Thursday's list can be seen after the break.

Playable content

Following the release of its latest financial results, EA has shared its estimates for predicted console hardware sales in North America and Europe in 2008. Though the Wii's continued domination seems obvious in even the murkiest of crystal balls, the publisher sides with Sir Howard Stringer's recent observation that the PlayStation 3 has departed the woods and sets

EA sees the PlayStation 3 selling between 9.5 million and 11.5 million units, compared to the Xbox 360's 6 to 8 million units. Sony's system would take the lead in Europe (a view shared by SCEE chief David Reeves), where it's expected to sell between 5 million and 6 million, well over the Xbox 360's 1.5 million to 2.5 million. Towering above both would be Nintendo's Wii, with estimates placing its sales between 12 million and 14 million units.

Only time will tell how accurate EA's predictions are and whether the PS3 will start contributing more heavily to the publisher's bottom line.
EA predicts PS3 will outsell Xbox 360 in 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 09:52:00 EST. David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, recently had some nice things to say about the company's competitor. When talking about how the industry has grown in the past year, he gives Nintendo due credit.

Reeves states that, thanks to many Nintendo games (like Brain Age, for example), the video games market has expanded to include more female gamers and families. which in turn has been good for the industry. It's certainly hard to argue that Nintendo has brought in many new gamers, but it's still nice for SCEE to give Nintendo props.

[Via GoNintendo]
Sony president compliments Nintendo originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. No, it didn't ingest PowerThirst, but people have been purchasing the system and utilizing the PlayStation Store more than even Sony expected. SCEE president and CEO, David Reeves, expressed that very sentiment in regards to the European market: "We've gone from zero to almost double-digit millions in terms of what people have purchased in euros." Awesome.

If this is any indication of Sony's 2008 domination (relative to their performance in 2007), we're off to a great start. We wonder how PSN sales are doing in the US and Japan, because quite frankly, Europe has often gotten the shaft when it comes to downloadable titles. We can only imagine if there will be another surge when Home releases, or if we'll get a surprising lull. Who knows.

[via CVG]

PSN sales surprise even Sony CEOs originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 14:30:00 EST.
Despite the PS3's late start in Europe, SCEE chief David Reeves has confidently predicted to MCV that the system is poised to overtake the Xbox 360 in cumulative European sales by late summer. "In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy ... our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360," Reeves said, adding that the PS3 outsold the 360 in all PAL territories 3-to-1 last week.

Is such a turnaround possible in the time frame Reeves suggests? A quick look at VGChartz (graph shown above) does show Microsoft's European sales lead on the PS3 recently getting cut in half, from roughly 1.8 million units in July '07 to only 0.9 million units in January '08. The narrowing came almost entirely during the highly competitive holiday season, though -- since then, PS3 and 360 sales have run roughly parallel.

Of course, the whole Sony/Microsoft battle might be meaningless, considering the Wii utterly dominated European sales through the 2007 holiday season. Then again, we suppose there's some pride in battling for the silver. Just ask Mitt Romney after the Iowa caucuses.

It's a non-contest in Japan, where sales of Xbox 360 have been abysmal at best. Europe, on the other hand, is an interesting territory. The PlayStation brand carries much more weight in the territory, and it's slowly on its way of overtaking the 360, in spite of its one year delayed release.

SCEE president and CEO David Reeves this week, revealed that PS3 has already outsold 360 in certain territories such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy. He told MCV, "We don't often mention the competition, but I will give you some interesting data: In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy - plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland - our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360.

However, a majority of the console's sales comes from the UK, and PS3 has yet to fully conquer. However, the outspoken Reeves is confident in their goals. "The team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer." And why do they believe such a lofty goal is possible? "It's also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three to one."

[Via Videogamer.com]
SCEE: European PS3 install base to beat Xbox 360 in summer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST.
