He notes that it probably won't be too long until an open edition custom firmware is released. Interestingly, Chameleon also notes that the files are nearly identical to the last firmware. This helps explain why the decryption has occurred so rapidly. As Chameleon asks: "Has Sony given up on trying to stop us from the homebrew world?" How many of our readers are waiting off for the inevitable custom firmware 3.50? Do you think Sony finally realizes the importance of the homebrew community?

3.50 firmware already decrypted originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 07:00:00 EST. We've been tricked by this tomfoolery before, and we're remaining cautious. DCEmu is reporting on a supposed experimental emulator that allows PSP games to be played in the Windows environment. "Potemkin" as the emulator is called is no longer being worked on by Ector due to "time constraints." Therefore, he's provided the source code for those interested to try and finish his project. (This does not mean that an end-user can effectively run a working program on their machine.) If this project comes to full fruition, Sony will certainly have a lot more to worry about: the piracy scene could potentially explode with a functional release of such an emulator. We'll have to stay tuned.
Experimental emulator brings PSP games to Windows originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 May 2007 17:30:00 EST. This continues this console release combination that has been so popular recently. For those who don't know about the Art of Fighting franchise, it was SNK's 2nd fighting series after Fatal Fury. There were only three Art of Fighting games ever created, but characters from the series did appear in other SNK fighting titles. I am personally more interested in this anthology on PSP since there aren't a wealth of 2D fighters yet on my favorite portable. Will you be picking up Art of Fighting Anthology, or is it too old for your tastes?

No release was given for the PSP version of Art of Fighting Anthology. The PS2 version is out in May though, so hopefully we don't have to wait too long.

PSP gamers looking forward to the visually impressive homebrew title Wandria: Tears in Fate, may be crying to themselves after this news. Due to a "life turning event," the coder of the title has decided to halt development on Wandria. The source code has been released, and Team ZionMax has given permission for others to continue the project if they wish. They also released an alpha of Wandria, for interested gamers to see what was completed thus far. Let's wish best of luck to Zion, and hopefully Wandria's future as well.

What's the first thing a zealous Nintendo fan does when he gets a PSP? Why, turn it into a Mario-worshipping shrine, of course! Mr. Shizzy has created an XMB modification for users of 3.03 OE-C firmware. Everything about the PSP interface has been changed, from icons, to sounds, to the waves in the background. It may be a bit gaudy for my tastes, but it's impressive nonetheless. To download this homebrew-only conversion, head over to DCEmu. Warning: because crucial files are overwritten in the process, you have a chance of bricking your PSP. Use at your own risk!

Video of the XMB in action, provided after the cut.
Continue reading Fan transforms his PSP into a Mario-loving paradise

Fan transforms his PSP into a Mario-loving paradise originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST.
The new game is called Dave Mirra BMX Challenge and will have you freestyle and race across 17 varied levels and environments. The included modes will be ad hoc wireless 1 -4 multiplayer, exhibition, novice, and pro circuit modes. Being a fan of both the anime and the game series, I was happy to see that more info has come out about Bleach: Heat the Soul 4 from the official site. Finally there will be playable Vizards. The battle system is upgraded and supposed to have a new component called 'Soul Blaze'. The creators say the game is based on the manga, not the anime which may explain some of the visual choices.
Lastly, here are the confirmed characters so far:

Ichigo Kurosaki

Shuhei Hisagi

Ulquiorra

Ikkaku Madarame

Yumichika Ayasegawa

Grimmjow Jaggerjack

Hirako Shinji

Hiyori Sarugaki

It's pretty easy to install and use ... so long as you're willing to struggle with the PSP's pathetic phone-like virtual keyboard. Too bad ZX81's newly released Virtual Keyboard isn't compatible: certainly, conversations would be far more manageable. Regardless, these are two appreciated apps that will certainly help a great number of people, especially because it doesn't involve homebrew. Simply download, extract, and access from the PSP's internet browser.
Continue reading Better keyboard and AIM client released by fans

Better keyboard and AIM client released by fans originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 22:45:00 EST.
Like many PSP owners, I like the added functionality of Dark_Alex's custom firmware. What I didn't like though was how Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters didn't work on my PSP because of it. Luckily, the fine folks at DCEmu have come up with a solution. Let me run you through it step by step, so you too can get Ratchet swinging his wrench on your custom firmware.

First, totally turn off your PSP (not sleep mode)

Now, hold down the right trigger and turn it back on

This will bring you to recovery menu where you can change several options

Configuration: Game folder homebrew (currently:3.XX Kernal), Use NO-UMD (currently:disabled), Fake region (currently: America), Free UMD region (currently:enabled)

Advanced configuration: Plain modules in UMD/ISO (currently:enabled)

CPU Speed: Speed in UMD/ISO (currently:266)

Plugins: All disabled

And that should do it. Now you can play the greatness that is Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters. Thanks again for the great fix DCEmu community!

Play Ratchet on custom firmware originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Feb 2007 10:45:00 EST.
Do you look at your PSP's analog stick nub thing with disdain? Do you dream up elaborate Road Runneresque schemes to destroy it and eat it for dinner? Well luckily for you, Divineo.com has replacement analog stick nub things for you to put in your PSP if you have some amount of modding skills or friends with modding skills. The pink one looks sorta dirty to me for some reason. If anyone actually has a modded PSP, you should post a link to an image of it in chat so we can all check out your pimped out handheld.

Now, homebrew users have a pretty ingenious way of finding out if there's a new version of Dark_Alex's homebrew-enabled firmware: use Network Update! Long considered vile by homebrew users, Xandu and Team 280 have created a plugin that allows you to use PSP's firmware checker to download Dark_Alex's latest. Ironic, no?

Check out installation details at DCEmu. Of course, be warned: tampering with the BIOS of your system can lead to a brick. Also, the general success rate of this app hasn't been too high: only about 2/3 of users seem to be able to successfully connect to the Updater.
Use Network Update to upgrade your homebrew originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 17:00:00 EST. The game focuses on the alternative sport of free running that involves jumping across building tops, climbing over obstacles and generally using the city as your playground. Sebastien Foucan the creator of free running was recently in the Bond film Casino Royale and in the game you'll compete against him to become the greatest free runner of all time.

Free Running will feature more than 60 challenges spread over 10 different levels in 3 distinct time zones, each with their own style of gameplay. 9 single and multiplayer modes like freestyle, time attack and ground zero. As you progress, you'll unlock characters, clothes, tricks videos and music.

An original sci-fi racer being developed by Engine Software and development is almost complete. Set in a not-too-distant future where illegal racing takes place on future Earth, a place of economic instability and depleted resources. StateShift features various single player modes like a career mode and ad-Hoc multiplayer.

The CEO of Engine Software had this to say of StateShift; "The development of StateShift has been highly productive and a great experience for the team and myself here at Engine Software. Now we are close to completion, I am personally very happy to announce the partnership with Midas Interactive Ltd and anticipate hugely successful release of StateShift into the European market."

The press release made no mention of StateShift being released outside Europe, but considering that the PSP can play games from other regions, it likely won't matter to those interested in the game. On a side note, what is going on with the game logo? It looks like "SD", but the game clearly is not called StateDiff, so I can't really make sense of it. Hopefully the logo isn't indicative of the quality of the title.

Over at the DCEmu forums a user named Zion has created a teaser trailer for a homebrew Zelda game he's creating. The DCEmu community seems to think that Sony's attempting to patch homebrew vulnerable PSPs with less exploitable firmware and hardware. But would that really be cost efficient?

I'll scratch this rumor as false, for now. More than anything else, these Wal-Mart employees were probably shocked by the surprising sales of the PSP over the holidays. It will apparently run "anything," including ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX files (whatever that means). There are a few bugs in this alpha release, but according to users, many games are completely playable and running at full-speed. With the homebrew community seemingly one-upping Sony, hopefully we'll see the official PSone download service hit American soon... and without the need for a PS3.

[Thanks, jamie!]
Homebrew PSone emulator released originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 26 Nov 2006 15:25:00 EST. About a week ago, Engadget posted a brilliantly detailed write-up on how to add an analog stick to your PSP. It wasn't attractive, so DCemu forum member Joe Stranger made a better mod. This version of the analog stick modification allows you to plug in the device through a new mini-USB slot he's created, so there's no messy wires hanging out of your system. Another bonus: you'll be able to freely add/remove the hack any time you want, so your PSP doesn't have to look like some weird Frankenstein. Color me impressed. Mr. Stranger talks about the potential for other peripherals to use the mini-USB slot, like a steering wheel... or better yet, a Steel Batallion controller.

[Via Joystiq]
Analog stick from the "ghetto" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 18:00:00 EST. The most noteworthy project on the scene, next to the virtual touch screen, has to be "VirtualPSP" a PSP emulator for the PC. S!ms, the programmer, posted a few pictures over at DCEmu, but as you know, in the homebrew world, pictures usually mean nothing. Here's an excerpt from the post he wrote:

I am working on a PSP Emulator for the PC (32bit currently), called VirtualPSP. It is a fully working PSP, but now on your PC... As you see it is working, but it runs very slow. Maybe it is my PC (1.3Ghz/256MB RAM), but i'll try to fix this and let some people try. Online play (infrastructure) will be available too, all connecting Peer to Peer. (My server will function as a main host). I need some time to get this fully working though. I can connect to my LAN pc's, but it freezes when the game's loading. I'll try to fix this anyway. Maybe i can add Ad-hoc function through the internet? (Like KAI) And no, i'm not gonna release this *yet*.
We'll see where this goes. While we don't support piracy here at the Fanboy, it's always interesting to see how far fans can push their technical skills. Stay tuned for more.
Rumor: VirtualPSP lets you play PSP games on you PC originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Oct 2006 14:15:00 EST. With the release of a super-easy way to downgrade firmware, it seems like many of you are ready to experiment with homebrew. While I prefer to support original endeavors, it's pretty obvious that the greatest lure for homebrew is <strike>piracy</strike> emulation. Exophase is a relatively new coder to the PSP homebrew scene, but he's already come out with a full speed Game Boy Advance emulator for the system. In an interview with DCEmu, he reveales some interesting info about his work.

DCEmu: The release of this emulator has been compared to the shock of Ultrahle and Bleem, emulators that werent thought possible until they were released, are you proud that your the first to get a decentplayable GBA Emulator out there ?
Exophase: Heh, well, I'm just glad that at least some people can play some games well. If so, it seems like there's so many opportunities out there for you to make some moolah, and win some prizes (such as this, and this). DCEmu is hosting a contest where programmers develop an original piece of homebrew, whether it be games, demos or applications. Prizes include the incredibly flexible GP2X system, gift certificates, and cash. You have until December 31st to submit an entry, so you have a lot of time to work on your original designs.
Another homebrewing competition originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 03 Sep 2006 10:25:00 EST. DCEmu has continued their summer series of interviews with two other popular PSP coders: StrmnNrmn and Deniska. Both have very different goals with the PSP. StrmnNrmn is famous for his efforts in bringing "Daedalus," an N64 emulator, to fruition. You can read through the entire interview with him for more, but here's an interesting snippet:

K: What do you keep on your own PSP?
StrmnNrmn: About 100 or so roms

Deniska works on bringing original games to the system, such as KETM. He also is working on a GPS device (see the YouTube video here). When asked what's on his PSP he had this to say:

K: So what homebrew/apps do you keep on your own PSP?
Deniska: Currently, I only have IRShell, PSPLink, Noiz2sa and KETM.

Feel free to read the entire interview with Deniska for more. It's clear that there are two very different segments for PSP homebrew: one focuses on pirating games, while the other focuses on developing original applications and games. Sony's attempt to squash homebrew as a whole is spawned by their fight against piracy, but it's unfortunate to see coders of original programs get caught in the crossfire. What about you, homebrew-using PSP fanboys? Do you use it for emulating games or do you use it to find original apps?
More interviews with more homebrewers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Aug 2006 21:45:00 EST.
