If zombies don't devour our lumpy noggins, then surely the robot uprising will take care of "the human threat." . Based on this video from an undergrad at Purdue University, we know that robots are in the lead. First they learn how to play DDR, then they learn how to peel the skin from our bones.
DDR-playing robot can't be a good sign originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 00:30:00 EST. Konami, along with the West Virginia University Extension Service and West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency, is hosting a Childhood Obesity Summit at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, West Virginia on July 27. Speakers will include The Biggest Loser's Dr. Michael Dansinger, as well as some very important-sounding people from U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

But why should you care? Because the summit will also play host to the state's second annual Dance Dance Revolution tournament for students, of course, where scholarships and other prizes will be awarded to the victors. DDR has been a part of West Virginia's physical education program since 2006, and Governor Earl Ray Tomblin believes the game is "is reshaping our youths' mindset regarding what constitutes physical activity." Konami agrees, telling Gamasutra that they intend to "help encourage today's youth to lead more active and healthier lifestyles in a way that works best for them." As always, we suggest a strict diet of Cooler Ranch Doritos and Throwback Mountain Dew for peak health performance.
Konami to host Childhood Obesity Summit and DDR tournament in West Virginia originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 10:45:00 EST. Known deft-footed retro game enthusiast Nick Hagman is an expert at conquering classic titles using an unorthodox peripheral: A Dance Dance Revolution pad. However, his latest conquest is by far his life's greatest achievement: the ever-difficult NES gem Ninja Gaiden; as seen in this video.
Continue reading Utter madman beats Ninja Gaiden NES using DDR pad

Utter madman beats Ninja Gaiden NES using DDR pad originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 04:00:00 EST. Konami recently elected to make an announcement about one of its oldest franchises in a fairly unconventional way -- by adding the teaser image seen above to its Facebook fan page. As you've probably sussed out, the publisher announced alongside the image, "we're bringing DDR to the PS3." We're wondering how long they've been holding onto this announcement, considering the relative age of the box art and straight chubby PS3 seen in the teaser.

Almost no details surfaced about which iteration of the series would hit the console, or when we can expect it -- however, the announcement does mention the title will have a "launch party" on August 12. We're not sure if it means "launch party" in the traditional sense, or if they're only planning on "launching" the game's heretofore absent details. We've contacted Konami to figure out which kind of party we're dealing with, and whether or not we should bring snacks.
Dance Dance Revolution stepping to PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 12:10:00 EST. DanceMasters is a new dancing game from the team responsible for the DanceDanceRevolution series. Unsurprisingly, it features dancing. The game places your face on dancers, and is able to follow your body. Although the Konami repeated that phrase multiple times, there's no mention of Kinect, or any other platform. Stay tuned for more.
DanceMasters, a new dance game from the Dance Dance Revolution team, has dancing originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 17:16:00 EST. Nick Hagman knows how to use his feet for a most unconventional purpose: completing games using a Dance Dance Revolution pad. He's done it before with Castlevania, and now he's used his talent to finish another classic, the original Super Mario Bros.

It took Hagman 14 attempts and plenty of practice to complete the classic. The 11-minute video documenting the feat can be found after the break, with certain sections sped up for sanity's sake. Now Hagman wants to know which game he should finish with his feet next: DuckTales or Mega Man 2?
Looking to cram your Xbox 360's side saddle (that's what the cool kids call the hard drive) with more precious e-games? Major Nelson reports US gamers can now check out DDR Universe 3 for $30. Of course, we don't have to tell you that you should own a dance mat before downloading, unless you're one of those freaks who plays DDR games with a controller.
But there's truth in advertising for this purse made out of a Dance Dance Revolution dance pad, which is, in fact, pretty cool.
As a bonus with this handy how-to, you get to see several lurid close-ups of a dance pad's guts. Sure, it's not the internet's biggest fetish group, but it's nice to see them being thrown a bone.
Before Guitar Hero and Rock Band was another phenomenon of the music gaming genre: Dance Dance Revolution. Konami's "dancing" game bundled a peripheral and captured the media's attention with its kinetic "exergaming" play. Over the years, the franchise has dwindled in relevance, as gamers got tired of stomping their feet to moving arrows. Each iteration of the series brought new songs, but the gameplay turned stale, and gamers eventually put their peripherals in the closet.

The same might be happening to the current slate of music games. NPD reports (via Gamasutra) that revenue for the Guitar Hero franchise have dropped 34% year over year. Even worse, the Rock Band franchise has dropped 67%. (Although, it should be noted that the Rock Band series has not had a major console release this year.)

Jesse Divnich of EEDAR argues that "the music and rhythm genre is being monetized more closely in terms of a pop-culture fad," which explains the increasing number of releases we see from the Guitar Hero franchise. He argues that the window of opportunity for making money is limited and that both Activision and MTV Games are "[striking] when the iron is hot." The upcoming The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 may make a big splash this holiday season, but it might not be long until gamers put away the plastic instruments and look for the next big thing.

Source - Analysis: Guitar Hero / Rock Band retail sales down by half
Source - The Divnich Debrief: Roadblocks in the Music Genre
Continue reading Guitar Hero, Rock Band sales slide reminiscent of DDR

Guitar Hero, Rock Band sales slide reminiscent of DDR originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. Kids-focused health journal Pediatrics recently published a study that would shock those who decry the health benefits of exergames. The study, which was performed by researchers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, measured young people's energy expenditure while at rest, while playing Dance Dance Revolution at two different skill levels, while walking and running on a treadmill and while boxing and bowling on Wii Sports. That sounds like more physical exertion than we go through in a year.

Some of the comparisons between these activities yielded somewhat unsurprising results -- playing the video games burned three times the calories the kids spent at rest, of course. However, the researchers also found that playing these games was a comparable activity to "moderate to intense walking," despite the fact that Wii Sports requires little lower-body movement. It seems that for the first time in recent memory, we've got science on our side. Hooray!

[Via Kotaku]
Pediatric journal boasts about benefits of exergaming originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Jul 2009 17:30:00 EST. The standard "snooze button" is for the lazy. You're not lazy, are you? You want to work for those extra seven minutes of rest in the morning. Well, with the <strike>DDR Alarm Clock</strike> Finger Dance Alarm Clock you can honorably earn the extra sleep: just turn on your brain when the alarm chimes, key in the lit panels in order and you may go back to sleep.

Though it highlights the £9.99 ($16) cost, the product description doesn't detail if the pattern is randomly generated every morning. If it's a set pattern, your hand's muscle memory will eventually key it in faster than the frantic feet of that little boy playing DDR on ludicrous difficulty down at the cineplex.

[Via Engadget]
Behold the brilliant terror of the DDR alarm clock originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 21:30:00 EST. E3 was brütal! If you blinked, for a split/second, you missed something. Even if you were trine to keep up, it was a blur -- staying a.wake like that, you only pushed yourself to the brink of your own dark void. That's where Joystiq comes in; to crackdown on the madness; to reach out ... with conviction -- phew! Crysis averted.
We've scoured the dark corners and survived the inferno to piece together this roundup of all things Xbox at E3. Why? Just 'cause we love you. For dance fanatics that are just too good for four buttons comes DanceDanceRevolution for PS3 and Xbox 360. The newly revised game will take advantage of a brand new floor mat that has twice the number of buttons as the original. We're not exactly sure how this mode will play, but we're hoping it'll be a little less confusing than playing the drums in Rock Revolution.

The 360 and PS3 versions of DanceDanceRevolution will also include 50 licensed tracks from artists such as Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Coldplay, Gorillaz. 150 classic tracks will also be downloadable at launch.
Have 8 feet? Though neither of them rhyme with "Petal Near Squalid", two of the four portable games Konami announced have arrived for your stroking and poking pleasure on the iPhone and iPod Touch this morning. The first, Silent Hill: The Escape, will run you $7.99 and allow you to "escape the suspense with full use of the touch panel and confront evil with the accelerometer." Watch your back, evil!

Also arriving in the iTunes Store is DanceDanceRevolution S Lite, an early version of the game - the "full version" is "currently in the works." It's being distributed for free, which seems like a bargain until you factor in the price of replacing your iPhone after you jump all over it.

Download - Silent Hill: The Escape [iTunes link]
Download - DanceDanceRevolution S Lite [iTunes Link]
Silent Hill and DanceDanceRevolution now on iPhone originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 11:29:00 EST. Wii owners should head over to Toys R Us next week (or, toysrus.com), as the retailer is having a good deal on Wii titles. From 8/3-8/9 (and even starting earlier in select stores, according to ads), if you buy a Wii game that costs $29.99 or more, you'll get $20 off a second Wii game.

Fortunately this deal includes games with peripherals, like Wii Play, Wii Fit, DDR, and Guitar Hero. That is, of course, if you can actually find said games (silly old Wii Fit) in stock.

Does anyone plan to use this deal to pick up a long desired title?

[Via CAG]
Toys R Us offers buy one, get $20 off deal originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST.
What does this woman think she's doing? We have seen some terrible outfits before, but this woman is crazy enough to wear hers with a smile. She should be ashamed just to have these embarassing pieces in her wardrobe, let alone actually on her, in public view. What excuse does anyone have to ever own checkerboard-patterned thigh-highs?

In case you missed the news from last week, Konami is following up its previous DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party game with DDR Hottest Party 2, promising Mii support, new gimmicks like the "triple stomp," more Wii remote interaction in the Dance n' Defend Battle Mode, new stages, and new characters, such as the unfortunate looking woman mentioned above. The rhythm title will also support a new soundtrack including "smash-hits from the last 4 decades," like Rihanna's immensely annoying "Umbrella" (ella, ella, ay, ay, ay) and Michael Jackson's least exciting single, "Black or White."

But let's get back to what's really on every gamer's mind -- how do these people live with themselves dressing in these clothes? This lady thinks she can get away with wearing a Zebra-print cap with matching hot pants and boots. Protip: it's best to pair a loud print with a neutral piece, rather than mixing or matching it with more loud prints. Now you know.

DDR2 Hottest Party 2 screens show Mii support, poor outfit decisions originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 May 2008 23:00:00 EST.
Konami wrote themselves into a corner with the title of their Wii Dance Dance Revolution game. Will it be a different superlative -- the coolest party, or the freshest party, or the most Chex-Mix-having party? Will it be the Hottest Party For Real This Time -- Last Time Was the Hottest to Date, But This Time's Even Hotter Than That?

Well, if the title of the new game found on Gamefly's site (with a release date of September 30th) is the real title, it'll just be DDR Hottest Party 2. It worked for Final Fantasy.

The exact pay-for-play system wasn't discussed in detail, but 16-year-old Arienne Stearns apparently needed a "C" grade on her dance to erase $14 of fines from her record.

Not that you had to have overdue books to play -- apparently, many girls "took second turns competing against the librarian, just for fun." This is a good deal, because from what we've heard, you haven't really experienced DDR until you've played it against a librarian ...

Library lets patrons play DDR to avoid late fees originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 04:00:00 EST. The first thirty seconds or so of this vid pulled us in with its colorful swirls, contrasting light and introduction of a dancing female. Then we suddenly get slapped in the face with a nauseating amount of colors and we soon realize that the outline is of what looks to be an 80's dancer decked out in a yellow tank top. We're confused, awestruck and are ever so curious to learn how a video becomes officially labeled "viral". This definitely isn't viral, it needs to have its viral license removed ASAP.
Video: Since when is DDR:DSU viral? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 15:00:00 EST. The resulting monstrosity is neither a console nor a handheld, and is really unsuitable for anything but being insane. Thus, we love it.

This guy rewired the circuitry on his GBA to take an external controller, and one that was meant for another system at that. Then he wrote up detailed instructions on how to do it yourself, and added pictures. When we first heard that Japan got an exclusive song in their copies of DDR Hottest Party, we were peeved. Japan always gets the cool stuff, amirite? But after seeing a video of the song, that annoyance turned into relief. Think of all the money we saved in the hospital bills that we surely would have accrued when trying to move our legs in such an unnatural manner. The song is "Pluto the First" by White Wall, and it sounds like it would be a fun DDR song if it just wasn't so ... impossible. Are there people out there really this good at Dance Dance Revolution?

[Via GoNintendo]

Japanese DDR Hottest Party features back-breaking song originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 25 Nov 2007 18:00:00 EST. With DDR Hottest Party out and Guitar Hero III and Samba de Amigo on the way, the Wii is quickly building up an outstanding library of rhythm games (and also the Alvin and the Chipmunks thing). In some cases, especially with Samba, the Wiimote makes the system ideal, but the real draws are the popularity of the Wii and the relatively low cost of development versus other next-gen consoles.

What does the Wii need in order to have a truly classic music game library? Ports, remakes, sequels, or even original ideas are welcome. We long for a new version of Enix's early rhythm game Bust a Groove, whose combination of attack moves and somewhat flexible timing is still totally unique.
Wii Warm Up: Waggle Waggle Revolution originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. The highlight of this week's releases is undoubtedly Konami's DDR: Hottest Party. While we have yet to see how hot that party is for ourselves, we're sure many of you are sweating up a storm as you move to the beat. So, are you going to be cutting up a rug this weekend, or do you plan on playing something else?
WRUP: It's a hot party edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 14:30:00 EST. If you're looking for something else to play, well you might just be out of luck. Most of what's available doesn't look all too appealing, to us at least.

This week's releases are:

Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party Bundle

Hot Wheels Beat That

Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire

Balls of Fury

So, any of you trying to pick one or more of these new titles up?

Wii releases for the week of September 24th originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Sep 2007 11:15:00 EST. My PAX expo hall map showed a small Konami booth toward the back of the hall. Just small enough, I thought, for a couple of DS demo stations showing off a certain side-scrolling sequel. I was sure I'd come back a hero, having gotten my hands on Contra 4 for real, and bringing back hyperbolic froth based on real playtime rather than screenshots and video.

You can imagine our disappointment when we saw the actual Konami booth, then. That's it above, occupied by Derrick and Garrett from Mega64. ProTip: it's not Contra 4.

Okay, I'm exaggerating. That's not the whole Konami booth. There was another DDR machine behind it.
Down down: No Contra 4 at PAX originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 14:00:00 EST.
We remember when US-released Dance Dance Revolution games had no licensed music whatsoever, filling their track lists with selections from in-house Konami artists. We soon learned to get over the lack of Captain Jack in our home games; and, in fact, grew to appreciate the work of Konami's composers, especially when they started putting music from other Konami games into rotation.

Now that music games are actually popular, Konami can afford to license some recognizable music, which means that your Hottest Parties will be accompanied by appropriately hot music, including the tracks named by Siliconera's Spencer Yip. During his time with the game at E3, he wrote down all the track titles he could. Highlights include C&C Music Factory's Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now), Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), and, of course, New Order's Blue Monday, the in-game remix of which had better be shortened significantly.

We're not saying that the boxart suggests a bad party, although if Konami's idea of the hottest party is two people playing DDR ten feet apart in a dark room, then they must attend even fewer parties than we do.

All we're saying is that it's just not hot. The colors, by definition, are really more on the cool end in all but the logo. We were struck by the cognitive dissonance between the hottest party and this very icy-looking box. The boxart-inside-the-boxart thing is also great, but they've been doing that for bundles since Charleston Charleston Revolution.
Hottest Party boxart uses a cool color scheme originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 15:50:00 EST. Over at Water Cooler Games, Ian Bogost recently spent some time remembering the Joyboard, a peripheral for the Amiga -- which boasted a single retail game -- that is similar to the balance board that is set to release with Wii Fit. Of course, it's not the only example; many of us still have dance pads for Dance Dance Revolution lying around, and some of the old-schoolers may even have old NES Power Pads tucked away in a closet, collecting dust, while gamers fondly recall Dance Aerobics and Track & Field.

What Bogost doesn't address -- which we think is a fascinating issue -- is Wii Fit's potential to succeed in the current market environment. Quite rightly, he calls upon gamers and critics to look back over the history of the industry in order to gain a better understanding of how we reached this point, and we agree with him that people should be less shocked by Wii Fit than they have seemed to be. Nintendo is no stranger to "non-games" and unusual peripherals. Particularly now, when the Wii has the potential to move even beyond the ubiquitous past presence of the NES and get into every home in America (and perhaps the world, huzzah!), it's no surprise that Nintendo is again angling to break the market wide open and offer something for everyone.

Does Wii Fit surprise you? Obviously, we knew a health pack of some sort was coming, but this is rather expanded upon what we expected. If there's one series in desperate need of a revolution, it's DDR. Unfortunately, adding Wii waggle is not our definition of a revolution. In many ways, Hottest Party feels like a spiritual successor to the last Nintendo DDR game, Mario DDR. The game reintroduces many gimmick arrows, such as bomb arrows that must be avoided, and other arrows that must be stepped on twice. Of course, the most significant addition are the waggle arrows, which have the player shaking the Wii Nunchuck or Wii Remote, depending on whether or not the left or right waggle arrow appears.

The new arrows don't feel like worthwhile additions. After extended play, it's clear that they're simply gimmicks. In addition, the waggle functionality doesn't feel precise enough for a rhythm game. We were also disappointed by the poor construction of the default pads, but that should come as no surprise for long-time DDR connoisseurs.

For dance fans that only have a Wii, it doesn't look like there'll be too many alternatives. The game will have a variety of music from the last four decades. One surprising omission from the game has to be the lack of Mii support: why can't we have the avatars we've created dance dance in the game? At least those will have a bit more personality than the generic anime characters that Konami has been using in the franchise. Do it Konami -- the fans want it.

Gallery: DDR Hottest Party

Joystiq impressions: DDR Hottest Party (Wii) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 13:25:00 EST. BREAKING NEWS. Konami just sent a press release for a brand ... new ... Dance Dance Revolution game. Again. Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 for Xbox 360 will be "the best-looking DDR game to date." In addition to the now-standard Xbox Live support and Quest Mode, the biggest addition to Universe 2 is Freestyle Mode. This new mode has all the dance-dancing of DDR, with none of the arrows, allowing players to mindlessly stomp on their pads. Konami says it's "perfect for kids or anyone with two left feet." In short, it's made for people that should have never played DDR in the first place.

For those afraid that the 360 version will not provide enough challenge, the upcoming PS2 Supernova 2 will include the awesomely titled "Hyper Master Mode." Konami's E3 showing contains three DDR games: DDR Universe 2 on Xbox 360, Supernova 2 for PS2 and Hottest Party for Wii. We're hoping that the rest of Konami's E3 line up will have, y'know, some other real games too.
Konami announces new DDR, removes arrows (seriously) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 15:56:00 EST.
Konami has released some screens of their new Wii-style Dance Dance Revolution, entitled Dance Dance Revolution HOTTEST PARTY. And it mostly looks like a DDR game, with some small adjustments. Hottest Party (we're going to stop with the caps, if that's all right) includes the same Free Play and Diet Modes as other DDR games, but also includes simultaneous four-player mode for people with really big living rooms.

The most noticeable adjustment is head size. That's funny, and a little weird, but totally cosmetic and won't get in the way of anyone's Dance Dance Revolving. What's a little more interesting than cranial embiggening is the Wiimote/Nunchuk usage. There seem to be special arrows that instruct players to point their hands in a certain direction, much like Samba de Amigo. Sometimes even the on-screen characters hold Wiimotes and Nunchuks.

The dance pad has made it to the Wii pretty much unscathed, with no Wiimote-shaped cavities or anything. It's a basic dance pad in a Wii color scheme. It appears to be wired, probably USB. We didn't need more-- with the extra waggling, this game seems complicated enough!

Portable game systems are completely self-contained. Unlike home systems, which require a TV, multiple outlets, and a separate controller unit, handhelds contain everything you need to play games, built right in to the unit. They are self-reliant. They are also-- and this goes without saying-- portable. They're designed to be small so you can carry them around.

Why, then, do jackasses feel the need to make accessories for handhelds? Accessories needlessly add bulk to Game Boys, effectively exiling them from casual pocket-drops. Here are five of the most pointless things you could ever graft onto a handheld system. We're giving a lot of attention to the Game Boy Color, as it turned out to be a focal point for idiotic doodads. Hopefully, these companies are still tired from their furious crap-assembling, and will largely pass over the DS.
Continue reading Five handheld accessories you should continue to live without

Five handheld accessories you should continue to live without originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 18:16:00 EST. The Japanese website for Konami's upcoming Wii installment in their incredibly huge rhythm-based franchise Dance Dance Revolution has launched. The Wii installment, Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party, doesn't have much going for it on its website, at the moment, but this is sure to change fairly soon. We're dying to see a demonstration of using all three peripherals at once, as we cannot possibly imagine how it could be done.

[Via Go Nintendo]
DDR Hottest Party site launches originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 13:05:00 EST. A shot of the loser getting his punishment in Dance Dance Immolation, where one wrong step could leave you with a face full of flames (thanks to dharmabum90 for the snapshot).
