Wal-Mart offering $100 gift card with PS3 purchase

We've received documentation from one of our reliable sources that the $100 gift card Walmart.com is currently offering with the purchase of a PS3 isn't the whole story. According to images shown us (one of which we've placed after the break) from the "Wal-Mart Wire," between June 1-7 Wal-Mart stores will give a $100 gift card to customers who purchase a PS3. The interesting part is that the following week, June 8 - 15, many Blu-ray players will offer the $100 gift card, and this apparently also includes the PS3.

The kicker here is if you're looking to pick up a PS3 with your purchase of Metal Gear Solid 4, the smart money would be to pick up the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle available June 12 because you'll get a $100 gift card out of the deal. Sure, you could be all about the Wal-Mart hate, but we'd take the free $100.

Rumor: EA eyeing Ubisoft takeover next?

Take this one with some mountainous mounds of salt, but a suspicious web site registration has some buzzing that EA might be considering a Take Two-style takeover bid for Ubisoft as its next potential expansion move. A poster over at Gamecyte noticed that a proxy registration for eaubisoft.com was set up by the same company on the same day as the registration for eatake2.com, the lobbying site created to convince Take Two shareholders to accept the company's unsolicited takeover bid (it did not succeed).

Of course, with proxy registration, it's impossible to know whether it was EA that actually registered the second site or if it's just the act of an overzealous domain camper. Still, given the close proximity of the registrations and the fact that EA already owns close to 25 percent of the voting shares in Ubisoft , the circumstantial evidence that EA was at least considering a move is significant (it wouldn't be the first such takeover attempt, either).

Ubisoft for its part, is focusing on license acquisition to spur its own growth in light of the Take Two offer. You know what they say ... when a bear like EA is chasing you, you don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than the guy you're running with.

Recent 360 and Live buyers get two free XBLA games

Microsoft offers two free Xbox Live Arcade games if you bought a 360 and Live account over the past year. Fill out a short registration form and enter code "XBX0807" to qualify. However, the site is cagey about which games you'll get. The terms and conditions state that you'll receive an email code by September 30 to download the titles, but the offer "will be for games selected by Microsoft."

360 fence-sitters still have until September 15 to buy the console and net the games. And the promotion includes buyers as far back as August 8, 2006. The wording sounds like Live account renewals don't qualify, but we still registered. We've contacted Microsoft for clarification but hadn't heard specifics when this post went live. We'll update you when we learn more.

[Update: Microsoft told us it hasn't announced which games you'll get and also stated that the promotion is for new Live accounts only. So officially at least, Live renewals get no love.]

3200 MS points for $20 at Circuit City [Update]

Today's Circuit City flyer shows that you'll save $20 on the purchase of two Xbox Live accessories $19.99 and up. This means that if you purchase two Xbox Live 1600 MS point cards at their $19.99 price, you'll get one of those for free. So, that's 3200 MS points for $20 -- we'll take it! We also called two separate Circuit Citys to confirm that the deal was accurate.

(The rest of this post has been dismissed as the blogger left the computer and jetted to the car)

Update: People are running into the problem that the cards are sold out at Circuit City stores. Try asking for a rain check or asking if you can special order them at the current deal. You can also try bringing the ad, which you should be able to find in your local newspaper or at Circuit City, to another store (preferably a competitor like Best Buy) for a price match.

Update 2: A store in Livingston, New Jersey put up a sign (found after the break) saying the deal was only valid with the purchase of an Xbox 360 Elite. We contacted the store twice and were hung up on twice while trying to clarify. We then contacted three other stores who said the deal was still legit and even politely informed us when they were expecting their next shipment because of today's run. So either there was a change in policy from Circuit City corporate or else the store is running one sweet scam.

[Thanks Joel and David]

Gamer Deals from Best Buy

No, we're not trying to horn in on Cheap Ass Gamer's territory, but with this holiday gaming season looking to be one of the most expensive in recent memory, we figured you'd like to be made aware of every opportunity to stretch those gaming dollars.

Our first offer sees Best Buy trying to clear out their stocks of some PS2 Greatest Hits titles at two-for-$30, a $10 savings off the MSRP. There are some real clunkers in the list, but if you missed out on great games like God of War or Burnout 3 the first time around, this is the perfect opportunity to get them.

For gamers who think the PS2 is so last gen, Best Buy also has a great deal for Xbox 360 owners. Buy any 360 game from the retailers and you can get 1,600 Xbox Live points for $4.99, a $15 savings. That's enough points to get more than halfway to a full version of Lumines Live. Wow!
