When the developer adds an "Alpha," "Turbo," or in this case "Ultimate," to a game's title, it typically signifies that the core parts of the game are unchanged. With <em>Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate</em>, players get the familiarity of <em>Tri</em> with the excitement of more quests, monsters and areas in which to hunt.<br /><br /><em>Ultimate</em> spans two systems this time around, the Wii U and 3DS. Both versions kick off in Moga Village, putting you through the same tired paces as seen in the previous slow-burn introductions to the universe. Collect some mushrooms, defeat a Great Jaggi, catch three goldenfish, deliver some eggs and so on. Veteran hunters will have plenty of material to re-tread before the game resembles anything different than what they're used to. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/">Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 3DS (2/14/13)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/#5639205"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/mh3u-3ds001-1360781471_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/#5639206"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/mh3u-3ds002-1360781471_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/#5639207"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/mh3u-3ds003-1360781471_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/#5639208"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/mh3u-3ds004-1360781472_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-3-ultimate-3ds-2-14-13/#5639209"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/mh3u-3ds005-1360781472_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/deja-review-monster-hunter-3-ultimate/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/deja-review-monster-hunter-3-ultimate/">Deja Review: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 20:00:00 EST. Developer Just Add Water took on the mantle of Oddworld Inhabitant's most celebrated title, bringing out a base-level update for PC in 2010 and a fully touched up HD version on PS3 (and, again, PC) in 2011. Now <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd"><em>Stranger's Wrath HD</em></a> has been converted to PlayStation Vita and released via PSN, again with a few changes and additions to the formula - this time to suit the portable, touch-enabled console it's being housed on.<br /><br /><em>Stranger's Wrath</em> itself was one of the most-loved of Lorne Lanning and co's creations, though the sales figures behind the original left the game residing firmly in 'cult classic' status. It told the story of the eponymous Stranger - a nameless enigma making his way around an old west-styled world, trying to save enough 'moolah' to buy a life-saving operation - and with a twist that nearly made the forums of 2005 explode. In other words, perfect fodder for an inexpensive re-release and hopefully enough to guarantee greater sales thanks to the power of seven years' word-of-mouth.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/">Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD Vita (E3 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/#5077477"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/strangerhd-vita-0096_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/#5077478"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/strangerhd-vita-0098_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/#5077479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/strangerhd-vita-0100_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/#5077480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/strangerhd-vita-0101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd-vita-e3-2012/#5077481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/strangerhd-vita-0102_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/27/deja-review-oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/27/deja-review-oddworld-strangers-wrath-hd/">Deja Review: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST. That accolade belongs to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/deja-review-mdk2-hd/">MDK2 HD</a>. </em>As the name suggests, the 2000 BioWare game underwent a visual facelift in the care of the appropriately named Overhaul.<br /><br />Despite <em>Baldur's Gate</em> being even older than <em>MDK2</em>, and Overhaul likely doing even more work underneath its hood, the developer's name doesn't sit as right with <em>Enhanced Edition</em>. An overhaul implies, at least to me, the taking apart of something, messing around with its innards until it looks and feels like something very <em>new</em>. That's not what this is.<br /><br /><em>BG:EE</em>'s tune-ups, additions, and even its graphical tweaks aren't there to dazzle, but simply to <em>enhance</em>. If <em>Baldur's Gate</em> is the seminal face of BioWare's RPG beginnings, then <em>Enhanced Edition</em> is its graceful make-up, and Overhaul the doting stylist straining to make sure it all blends in. This delicate approach is admirable, but <em>en vogue</em> it definitely ain't.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/">Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/#5492488"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/baldursgateenhe-screen23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/#5492477"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/baldursgateenhe-screen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/#5492478"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/baldursgateenhe-screen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/#5492479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/baldursgateenhe-screen06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-0/#5492480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/baldursgateenhe-screen08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/11/deja-review-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/11/deja-review-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/">Deja Review: Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:30:00 EST. Whilst Sony told consumers that they <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xYVBMQoaDA">were not</a> "<font color="#ff0000">e</font>" for its fantastic PlayStation, Sega tried to find a killer app for its Saturn, which simply didn't have the 3D chops to compete (2D ... well, that's an entirely different article). One of the volleys Sega aimed <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv1BE1bexCg">directly at the PlayStation</a> was Sonic Team's <em>Nights into Dreams</em>, a 3D game that allowed players to fly with complete freedom.<br /><br />Okay, so it was actually confined to a predefined, mostly two-dimensional plane, but that didn't keep <em>Nights</em> from being a hallmark experience for anyone who happened to have a Saturn.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/">NiGHTS into Dreams HD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/#5135965"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/nidhd-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/#5135966"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/nidhd-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/#5135967"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/nidhd-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/#5135968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/nidhd-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nights-into-dreams-hd/#5135969"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/nidhd-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/deja-review-nights-into-dreams/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Nights into Dreams</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/deja-review-nights-into-dreams/">Deja Review: Nights into Dreams</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Oct 2012 13:45:00 EST. If <em>Guilty Gear XX: #Reload</em> was my first girlfriend, and <em>Soul Calibur 2</em> my first true love, then <em>JoJo's Bizarre Adventure</em> was my first kiss. I was 12 when the game was originally ported to the PlayStation in 1999, and while I'd flirted with various Mortal Kombats and Street Fighters, never had I been so <em>enthralled</em> by a fighting game.<br /><br />Its oddball cast, absurdly supernatural narrative and artistic, surreal presentation made it different from not just the rest of Capcom's catalogue, but also every other 2D fighter on the market. It was <em>unique</em>, for better or for worse, with overflowing coffers of goofy, brilliant single-player content that made it <em>so much more</em> than a simple arcade port.<br /><br />Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/jojos-bizarre-adventure-hd"><em>JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD</em></a> for PSN and XBLA is so much <em>less</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/">JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/#5155167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/jojoscreenshot000bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/#5155168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/jojoscreenshot001bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/#5155169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/jojoscreenshot002bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/#5155170"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/jojoscreenshot003bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/jojo-s-bizarre-adventure-hd/#5155171"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/jojoscreenshot004bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/24/deja-review-jojos-bizarre-adventure-hd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/24/deja-review-jojos-bizarre-adventure-hd/">Deja Review: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 19:30:00 EST. Over the years, the Japanese arcade version of <em>VF5</em> has still been in development: it's been tweaked, rebalanced and of course, granted many wonderful new costumes, hats and so on.<br /><br />The console version, meanwhile, has remained abandoned for those five years. This long-awaited digital release, appropriately titled <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/virtua-fighter-5-final-showdown"><em>Virtua Figher 5 Final Showdown</em></a>, gives console owners Sega AM2's years of hard work on their flagship title all at once for a pittance of $15 on the XBLA and PSN. It's like eating jelly on eggs while watching a baby play in a lion cage: It doesn't belong where it is, but now that it's there you can't look away and, for some reason, there's a surprisingly delicious taste in your mouth.<br /><br /><em>Minecraft</em>'s shock value as an XBLA breakout isn't a result of it not making sense on the platform - in fact, it plays almost like a native title. It's surprising because <em>Minecraft</em> was never supposed to be big enough for a high-profile XBLA port. It's a voxel-based PC-only sandbox game with choppy graphics and no defined goal, which some argue makes it the opposite of a "game." <em>Minecraft</em> was never supposed to be a hit. It <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/minecraft-built-80-million-in-revenue/">wasn't supposed to</a> sell more than 5 million copies, generate $80 million or be played by more than 25 million people. It wasn't supposed to turn Markus Persson's developer persona, Notch, into a millionaire, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/26/valve-gifts-notch-his-own-head-on-other-peoples-heads/">fashion icon</a>, or a common name among Swedes and gamers alike,<br /><br />But <em>Minecraft</em> has done all of these things, and now it's made its way XBLA. And just as it has everywhere else, <em>Minecraft</em> surprisingly succeeds.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/10/deja-review-minecraft-xbla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Minecraft (XBLA)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/10/deja-review-minecraft-xbla/">Deja Review: Minecraft (XBLA)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 May 2012 14:40:00 EST. I've always loved Mortal Kombat as a franchise, for its hokeyness and that special part of American gaming history that it represents, but I had never thought any of its games were ever particularly <em>good</em> - especially from tournament-level fighting game standards. <em>Mortal Kombat</em> changed all that, not only by staying true to the series' ridiculous goofball roots, but also by being a solid, well-balanced, mechanically rich piece of game design. I know, I couldn't believe it either.<br /><br />Fast forward just a little over one year to the day, and it's time for <em>Mortal Kombat</em>'s encore performance on the Vita. Thankfully, the portable version of Raiden and friends' adventure through Outworld is just as fun, gruesome and reliable as its console counterparts, though perhaps a little rougher around the edges.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vita/">Mortal Kombat (Vita)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vita/#4789789"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/mk9vitatybfatality2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vita/#4789790"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/mk9vitamissile_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vita/#4789791"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/mk9vitaswipe_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/01/deja-review-mortal-kombat-vita/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Mortal Kombat (Vita)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/01/deja-review-mortal-kombat-vita/">Deja Review: Mortal Kombat (Vita)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2012 09:45:00 EST. The series' approach to character building - in which you can basically raise levels to stratospheric proportions with time, effort, and the best power-leveling locales - is more suited to on-the-go play. It's a lot easier to make your way through the randomly generated Item Worlds to level up your gear in thirty-minute commute blocks, putting your system to sleep as needed, than it is to devote hours to a single grind session squatting in front of a TV.<br /><br />It's for this reason that I tend to invest far more time in the portable versions of Disgaea than their console counterparts. I'll generally put down the console editions once I've cleared the main story, but I'll invest an absurd amount of time in the portable editions to scout out many of their extras, simply because the format makes them more easily digestible. The number of hours played on my <em>Disgaea 2</em> PSP save have long since passed the triple digits.<br /><br />Now, we've got <em>Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention</em> on the Vita. I've always felt that <em>D3</em> was the weakest of the series in terms of both gameplay and its story and characters. That doesn't mean it's bad, just not as good as some of the other installments. I had hoped that playing it in my preferred format would change my mind, but, unfortunately, it didn't. It's still my least favorite Disgaea game. However, it's still a very good portable strategy game with several noteworthy new additions.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-disgaea-3-absence-of-detention/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-disgaea-3-absence-of-detention/">Deja Review: Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 15:45:00 EST. The PC version remains superior, capable of more clarity and sophisticated effects, but plug in a controller and the Riveting Polish Game transforms into something you'd rather play ensconced in a couch. The "Enhanced Edition" feels authentic and comfortable on the Xbox 360.<br /> <br /> That isn't to say it's been streamlined to a fault. <em>The Witcher 2</em> is a gorgeous, thoughtful and brassy adventure with a surprising number of sharp edges. The original game had a deadly gauntlet for a tutorial, a misstep which got it lambasted while a dragon roasted players again and again. It was frustrating, yes, but it worked as a charming wake-up call of sorts, and as a crucial component of the game's mature personality. To succeed, you must think and do as Geralt of Rivia does, and that's precisely what you want in a role-playing game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/">The Witcher 2 Xbox 360 (1/26/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings-enhanced-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (Xbox 360)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings-enhanced-edition/">Deja Review: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (Xbox 360)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 09:45:00 EST. I'm entirely willing to replay this game -- one of my favorite games ever -- on every platform Konami will sell it to me on, so I was hoping to at least have a good experience when dutifully playing it on the handheld.<br /><br />To my relief, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-3d-snake-eater"><em>Metal Gear Solid 3D</em></a> is a real, playable, enjoyable version of the game, and it's on a handheld. Even without the crutch of a Circle Pad Pro attachment, the controls work fine! There are some compromises thanks to the small format -- but there are also a few things that the 3DS version does <em>better</em>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/">Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D (TGS 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/#4454301"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/mgsse3dssd02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/#4454302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/mgsse3dssu02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/#4454303"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/mgsse3d001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/#4454304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/mgsse3d002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater-3d-tgs-2011/#4454305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/mgsse3d003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/deja-review-metal-gear-solid-snake-eater-3d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/deja-review-metal-gear-solid-snake-eater-3d/">Deja Review: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. The RPG genre was flying high and compelling new JRPGs seemed to arrive on a monthly basis. Even in that environment, the game managed to stand apart from the crowd.<br /><br />Though it featured a somewhat formulaic story that bowed to genre tropes (even going so far as to include a mostly amnesiac lead protagonist), <em>Tales of the Abyss</em> wowed consumers and critics alike with interesting characters, detailed and beautiful environments, an efficient combat system and an epic adventure. The game's greatest strength was its ability to take so many familiar genre elements and tie them together to create an experience that almost felt too big for the PlayStation 2 hardware. More than five years later, that experience has returned in handheld form with all of the magic still in place.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/">Tales of the Abyss (Gamescom 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/#4373464"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/01the-border-fortress--kaitzur01s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/#4373465"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/02chesedonia00s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/#4373466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/02chesedonia02s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/#4373467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/03the-mining-townakzeriuth00s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tales-of-the-abyss-gamescom-2011/#4373468"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/3dstoabattle004s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/deja-review-tales-of-the-abyss-3ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Tales of the Abyss (3DS)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/deja-review-tales-of-the-abyss-3ds/">Deja Review: Tales of the Abyss (3DS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 16:30:00 EST. After a long creation process, which included ditching a PC version that was always planned, Remedy's first original title since 2003 failed to light up sales charts (despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/05/review-alan-wake/">critical praise</a>).<br /><br />For fans of Wake's story, its inability to reach 'best-seller' status raised fears of an end to his fiction. Developer Remedy Entertainment defied that notion, announcing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Alan-Wakes-American-Nightmare/">Alan Wake's American Nightmare</a></em>, which is set to hit Xbox Live Arcade later this month. Retaining rights from Microsoft -- its original partner in Wake's release -- Remedy finally made good on its promise to bring Wake to the PC, and <em>Alan Wake</em>'s second-printing does little to disappoint.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/">Alan Wake PC (2/16/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/#4825457"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/alanwakepccabin-1329416118_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/#4825458"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/alanwakepcflareshot-1329416119_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/#4825459"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/alanwakepcpoltergeist-1329416120_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/#4825460"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/alanwakepcroughroad-1329416120_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alan-wake-pc-2-16-12/#4825461"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/alanwakepcrusty-1329416121_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/deja-review-alan-wake-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Alan Wake (PC)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/deja-review-alan-wake-pc/">Deja Review: Alan Wake (PC)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 17:00:00 EST. Then Ignition took it on and began working with developer Denki on an iOS release -- which ended up coming out first. That makes this XBLA version, which <em>was</em> the original version, a re-release. Weird!<br /><br />What isn't weird is playing this on XBLA. It's still just as difficult to battle over territory by quickly spelling out anagrams, and just as satisfying to capture your opponent's soldiers by doing so. The combination of fairly quick board-game design and online play is an obvious winner, giving it a decisive advantage over its portable counterpart. Even if you're playing alone, new modes offer experiences not found in the iOS release. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/">Quarrel (XBLA 1/25/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/#4775619"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/quarrelamen-ninja_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/#4775620"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/quarrelattack_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/#4775621"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/quarrelbattlefield_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/#4775622"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/quarrelend-turn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quarrel-xbla-0/#4775623"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/quarrelhere-we-go_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/25/deja-review-quarrel-xbla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Quarrel (XBLA)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/25/deja-review-quarrel-xbla/">Deja Review: Quarrel (XBLA)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 18:50:00 EST. There are certain prerequisites that simply come with being a Capcom fighting game enthusiast. Alongside the need to recognize and understand various fundamentals (mostly in the form of now standardized button combinations), there's also the acceptance that game X will be regularly updated, and largely at the cost of the player.<br />
<br />
Most revisions bring with them various tweaks to the formula, fixes for flaws that were only discovered once the completed game was in the hands of experts on the tournament circuit. Beefier updates add fighters new and old to the fray, while slightly less substantial but nonetheless obligatory cosmetic enhancements fall closer to the realm of shameless nickel and diming.<br />
<br />
Most of Capcom's updates have been no-brainers, but in the case of the not-yet-one-year-old <em>Marvel vs. Capcom 3</em>, there is enough cause for trepidation. Could the expanded offerings of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/utlimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3"><em>Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3</em></a> not be added as DLC? More pressing: Is <em>UMvC3</em> worth the $40 price of admission? Not surprisingly, it depends entirely upon how much you loved the first edition.<br />

You never forget your first. Way back in 2001, halfway through my first year of college, my parents unexpectedly bought me an Xbox for Christmas. My first game was <em>Dead or Alive 3</em>, but the one I'll always remember was something called <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/halo-combat-evolved-anniversary"><em>Halo: Combat Evolved</em></a>. I'd never heard of it before, but the editors of my gaming magazine of choice -- <em>EGM</em>, as I recall -- gave it not one or two or three, but <em>four</em> 10 out of 10s.<br />
<br />
I picked up a copy and the rest, as they say, is history. I played through the campaign alone, and again with friends, and again with my brother, and <em>again</em> with my then future in-laws. I played multiplayer at the only LAN party I've ever attended and I got slaughtered, falling countless times to the effortless pistol precision of friends-of-friends who were actually geekier than I was. But it didn't matter, because <em>Halo</em> was a blast.<br />
<br />
Ten years later, it still is.<br />

In the eyes of many, the original <em>GoldenEye 007</em> for the Nintendo 64 stands out as much more than a mere game. GoldenEye is a legend with a legacy all its own; one that cannot be substituted or replicated. Of course, that didn't stop Activision from making the attempt in 2010 with a brand new game with the familiar moniker of <em>GoldenEye 007</em> for the Wii.<br />
<br />
Mercifully, the publisher made the very wise (and legally mandated) decision to carry the franchise forward in name only. Rather than creating a direct remake of the 1997 classic, they crafted an entirely new experience that was surprisingly original while still feeling classically GoldenEye. The new game featured much of the style of the original while reimagining the story and characters and events in the modern day.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/goldeneye-007-reloaded"><em>GoldenEye 007: Reloaded</em></a> is the latest attempt to fill in the N64 classic's sizable tuxedo -- this time in high definition. Unfortunately, while <em>Reloaded</em> fits into the right suit, it seems that it's gotten a bit snug.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/deja-review-goldeneye-007-reloaded/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: GoldenEye 007: Reloaded</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/deja-review-goldeneye-007-reloaded/">Deja Review: GoldenEye 007: Reloaded</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 16:05:00 EST. Not even a semi-controversial visual makeover can keep me from loving <em>Cave Story</em>. I admit to being a bit worried upon seeing the first screens of the new 3DS remake, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/cave-story-3d"><em>Cave Story 3D</em></a>, developed by Nicalis in conjunction with original creator Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. And I admit now that the new polygonal graphics lack the extreme charm of the original pixels.<br />
<br />
But <em>Cave Story</em> is a wonderful game on any platform, in any configuration. Those new graphics are there to sell the game to non-"core" gamers who see 2D art as archaic, and who have no pre-existing knowledge of the indie game scene or of <em>Cave Story</em>. The game still works with its new look. Besides, I was really, honestly impressed with the redone art in several areas. I enjoyed seeing the game reinterpreted, after seeing the original so, so many times.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/deja-review-cave-story-3d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Cave Story 3D</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/deja-review-cave-story-3d/">Deja Review: Cave Story 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 14:15:00 EST. Murder Death Kill? Mystical Door Knobs? Malevolent Didgeridoo King?<br />
<br />
The true decomposition of codename "MDK" used to be a legend of sorts in the game industry. Now, there's not so much as a hint of enigma around the latest letters appended to the game: <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mdk2-hd"><em>MDK2 HD</em></a> does indeed run in haughty definition.<br />
<br />
Even if you're joining us from 2000's PC version of <em>MDK2</em> (released alongside a Dreamcast version, and preceding a PlayStation 2 port), you'll be treated to a significant visual upgrade in <em>MDK2 HD</em>, care of Overhaul Games. What hasn't changed in the last eleven years, of course, is the incredulity that results upon playing a funny, frivolous and uncluttered action game from BioWare. Yes, <em>that</em> BioWare.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/">MDK2 HD (10/11/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/#4518141"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/mdk2hdcomparecs1a001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/#4518142"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/mdk2hdcomparecs1a002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/#4518143"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/mdk2hdcomparecs1a003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/#4518144"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/mdk2hdcomparecs1c001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mdk2-hd-10-11-11/#4518145"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/mdk2hdcomparecs1c002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/deja-review-mdk2-hd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: MDK2 HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/deja-review-mdk2-hd/">Deja Review: MDK2 HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 10:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-house-of-the-dead">House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em> was something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's a game defined by its grindhouse, B-movie trappings and, when it arrived on the Wii in February 2009, it developed the sort of cult audience that builds around the films the game set out to emulate.<br />
<br />
Of course, by definition, cult audiences aren't particularly large, so Sega's attempting to reach a new crowd with <em>House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut</em>, a beefed up version of the hilarious, well-built on-rails shooter. Yes, Agent G and Isaac Washington have made the transition to PS3 and -- fair warning -- they still work pretty blue.<br />

What if you could go back in time, but instead of doing something mundane like killing Hitler's mom or saving Sarah Connor, you could get filthy rich. Like Scrooge McDuck rich. Like <em>Dethklok rich</em>.<br />
<br />
Sure, you do a little betting, you use your knowledge of upcoming events to amass an empire of wealth by simply doing something you should've done in the first place. But even that mistake ends up being a blessing for you: You've got something the people want and you know it.<br />
<br />
That's the Capcom of recent, a company who is quickly becoming the master of selling us the same game multiple times. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-rising-2-off-the-record"><em>Dead Rising 2: Off the Record</em></a> is the company's latest re-release -- sadly, marginal technical improvements and the replacement of protagonist Chuck Greene with the original game's hero, Frank West, just aren't enough to warrant another go 'round Fortune City.<br />

The original <em>Crysis</em> is an abstract concept for many. Whether through actual technical limitations or a perception thereof, it was the destroyer of worlds and PCs, seen as out of reach for all but the most tech-driven of PC gamers. It's been so easy to get caught up in the question of "Can it run <em>Crysis?</em>" that there's a swath of gamers who have never asked, "How is <em>Crysis</em>?"<br />
<br />
But here we are, with <em>Crysis</em> (the first) finally making its way to six year old hardware. It runs. But is it fun?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-ps3-360/">Crysis (PS3 / 360)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-ps3-360/#4479091"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/crysis01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-ps3-360/#4479092"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/crysis02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-ps3-360/#4479094"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/crysis03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/crysis-ps3-360/#4479095"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/crysis04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/deja-review-crysis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Crysis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/deja-review-crysis/">Deja Review: Crysis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 16:45:00 EST. It would be difficult to think of two games that have so unanimously been labeled as masterpieces by gaming critics and consumers alike than <em>Ico</em> and <em>Shadow of the Colossus</em>. Each possesses a unique beauty possessed by (regrettably) so few other games: <em>Ico</em> with its sense of childlike wonder and grand adventure, <em>Colossus</em> with its abject desolation and foreboding. They're poignant, and sad, and (fortunately for Sony and Team Ico) inimitably timeless.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ico-and-shadow-of-the-colossus-collection"><em>The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection</em></a> pairs HD-remastered versions of the two titles in one tidy $40 package. Their visual revivification -- the most substantial improvement over the PS2 originals -- isn't quite as thorough as ground-up reconstruction of <em>Halo: Anniversary</em> or the total reskinning of <em>Ocarina of Time 3D</em>. But it's certainly enough to make these once-beautiful games even more staggering.<br />

It may not have garnered the same enthusiastic posthumous cult following as its little brother, but the Sega Saturn was a very good console -- provided you were a very specific type of gamer. Unlike its contemporaries whose processing architectures were designed to excel at 3D graphics (not 3D-glasses 3D, just, you know, <em>polygons</em>), the Saturn's extremely complex and unconventional processor configuration was uniquely suited for 2D, sprite-based games.<br />
<br />
While the Crash Bandicoots, Crocs, and Super Mario 64s of the period were pioneering the field of <em>depth perception</em>, the Saturn became a safe haven for 2D skill-based games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Radiant-Silvergun"><em>Radiant Silvergun</em></a>. Despite the fact that it was never released stateside, Treasure's manic 1998 shooter is thought of as a definitive Saturn classic, which continues to influence contemporary shmups even to this day. Now, through the magic of XBLA, an entirely new generation of gamers are being exposed to the genesis of bullet-hell, and even after 13 years, <em>Radiant Silvergun</em> is still a relevant, infuriating masterpiece.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/">Radiant Silvergun (XBLA)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/#3368279"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/radiant-silvergunscreenshot02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/#3368281"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/radiant-silvergunscreenshot03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/#3368282"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/radiant-silvergunscreenshot01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/#3368285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/radiant-silvergunconceptart_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/radiant-silvergun-xbla/#3368286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/radiant-silvergungamelogo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/deja-review-radiant-silvergun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Radiant Silvergun</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/deja-review-radiant-silvergun/">Deja Review: Radiant Silvergun</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 14:55:00 EST. If you've spent any time with the Nintendo 3DS -- especially if that time was spent with the handheld's aeronautical launch title, <em>Pilotwings Resort </em>-- you're probably aware that flying games are right in this handheld's wheelhouse. Moving forward through the sky as objects and other pilots move towards, around and behind you looks invariably dope with the 3D slider turned on; this law is no less incontrovertible in the system's latest first-party remake: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-fox-64-3d"><em>Star Fox 64 3D</em></a>.<br />
<br />
But games can't live on <em>dopeness</em> alone -- they need meat on their bones as well. <em>Star Fox</em> has no lack of content, but if you owned the Nintendo 64 original and thoroughly explored its brief and branching campaign back in 1997, you've probably seen that content plenty of times before. Much like <em>Ocarina of Time 3D</em> before it, <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> is banking on a single bulletpoint to earn your purchase: You've never seen that content quite like this.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/">Starfox 64 3D (Comic Con 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306880"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306882"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/deja-review-star-fox-64-3d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Star Fox 64 3D</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/deja-review-star-fox-64-3d/">Deja Review: Star Fox 64 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 16:20:00 EST.
