Or -- a more likely scenario -- do you want to play them, but don't feel like getting them off the shelf and putting the discs into a console? Such effort. Such drudgery.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=vg_nav_hp_dotd?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000208101&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=left-2&amp;pf_rd_r=0917X3V395T4PJC23MT2&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=1345132122&amp;pf_rd_i=468642">Amazon</a> has the PC download versions of these games on sale today for $5 each. The Deal of the Day also includes the Digital Deluxe Edition of <em>Mass Effect 2</em> for $7.49, or Dungeon Defenders for $2.99. What separates it from Alienware's normal crop of powerful rigs, you ask? The X51 is all about form factor, cramming decent horsepower into a diminutive, console-like package. It features a slot-loading optical drive, front facing USB ports for controllers, lots of rear USB ports and plenty of output options.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/alienware-x51-gaming-pc-we-go-hands-on-at-the-london-launch-eve/">Engadget</a> recently got some hands-on time with the X51, which ran <em>Street Fighter IV</em> swimmingly (and <em>Portal 2</em>, which isn't exactly a graphics showcase). The base configuration runs for $700, while the top-of-the-line model will set you back $1150.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/08/engadget-goes-hands-on-with-the-x51-gaming-pc-from-alienware/">Engadget goes hands on with the X51 gaming PC from Alienware</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:00:00 EST. In the market for a fancy new Xbox 360, Wii, or ... um, a new <em>Band Hero</em> bundle? All three have received discounts as part of <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;~topic=weekend_deals&amp;dgc=EM&amp;cid=58951&amp;lid=1495363&amp;acd=EG3IWJ-5YIAY-GL7MGV-VHW7FK-TDYL7-v1">Dell's Weekend Deals</a>, which also cover a few TVs, cameras and a Blu-ray player. It sounds perfect for folks who are just getting into this whole "electronics" thing.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/28/dell-offering-deals-on-xbox-360-wii-and-band-hero-this-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell offering deals on Xbox 360, Wii and Band Hero this weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/28/dell-offering-deals-on-xbox-360-wii-and-band-hero-this-weekend/">Dell offering deals on Xbox 360, Wii and Band Hero this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. For a high-profile game just released weeks ago, that's a pittance -- <em>less than a pittance</em>. If you gave Dell a pittance, you'd get a trifle back as change. <em>It's a good deal,</em> is what we're saying, for a game that is "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/super-mario-galaxy-2-review/">the best <em>Mario</em> game ever</a>."<br />
<br />
In fact, at this point, the only valid excuse for not trying out <em>Galaxy 2</em> is, well, motion sickness. If you're prone to that particular ailment, the game's less magical and more <em>the worst experience of your life</em>.<br />

If you've stubbornly held off on purchasing a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> until it's available at a slightly more <em>reasonable</em> price, you may want to turn your attention to <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Sony_PSP/productdetail.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;cs=19&amp;sku=A2997503">Dell's current discount</a> on the handheld. If you purchase a Go on Dell's site right now, you'll get an instant $60 rebate, knocking the total cost down to $189. Shipping is free as well, so you won't concern yourself with any pesky weight and distance estimations. As the salespeople on TV would say, you just set it, <em>and forget it</em>.<br />
<br />
Then, in three to five business days, it'll show up, and you'll be all like, "Oh, neat. Someone bought me a PSP Go."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/20/psp-go-on-sale-for-189-from-dell/">PSP Go on sale for $189 from Dell</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Apr 2010 16:46:00 EST. Odds are if you've been trying to track down a new PS3 lately, you're having <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/sony-ps3-supply-to-be-tight-over-coming-months/">one heck of a time</a>. Well, if you wouldn't mind plunking down a bit of coin to get one in a few weeks' time, then you may be interested in what <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/PLAYSTATION%C2%AE_3/productdetail.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;cs=19&amp;sku=A3018856">Dell's got going on</a> right now.<br />
<br />
The retailer has taken $30 off the standard price for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/tabulator-ps3-slim-and-phat-sized-up/">120GB PS3 Slim</a>, bringing it down to a pleasant $269 -- the caveat being that Dell won't actually ship the system until an estimated 10 days after you purchase it (<a href="http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/shipdate_details_popup.aspx?~lt=print&amp;cfgitem=CFGSNA&amp;c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;oc=PS3SLIM&amp;s=dhs&amp;fb=1">details here</a>).<br />
<br />
For a bit of perspective, know that basically anywhere you try to purchase a PS3 online, you're going to be waiting a while -- unless you get one from a third-party merchant on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-120-GB/dp/B002I0J4VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1268145675&amp;sr=8-1">Amazon</a>, where you can replace "impatiently waiting" with "spending a lot more money." <br />
<br />

<br />
The M11x, basically Alienware's version of a netbook, features an 11.6-inch screen and an NVidia GT335M card that can be switched off to increase battery life when not gaming. Retailing for some unspecified sub-$1,000 amount (so $999.99?), the tiny computer can apparently run <em>Crysis</em> at 60 frames per second in 720p.<br />
<br />

If you've got an impressive amount of money buried in your backyard and would love to own a super slick gaming machine, Alienware might be an option you're currently considering. The company has <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/alienware/">announced</a> that its "All Powerful" systems will ship with Valve's Steam platform pre-loaded onto the system, allowing potential gamers to sign up for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/13/how-not-to-boycott-modern-warfare-2/"><em>Modern Warfare 2</em> boycotts</a> mere moments after booting the rig up.<br />
<br />
The Steam client will also include a free copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/portal"><em>Portal</em></a>, in case you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-games-of-2007/">missed most of 2007</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/alienware-machines-now-come-pre-loaded-with-steam/">Alienware machines now come pre-loaded with Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:40:00 EST. Yes, Dell, maker of PCs and occasional gaming deals, is now selling the PC version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2"><em>Left 4 Dead 2</em></a> at a drastically reduced price. The company has marked down the game from $49.99 to <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=A3028216&amp;cs=19&amp;c=us&amp;l=en&amp;dgc=CJ&amp;cid=24471&amp;lid=566643&amp;acd=10495476-404255-121901">a mere $29.99</a>. That's twenty whole dollars, which is probably the same price Valve will charge on Steam precisely ten minutes <em>after</em> you buy it from Dell. But hey, it's a deal right now and it's hard to argue with that. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/review-left-4-dead-2/">Or is it</a>?<br />

If you're in the market for a Wii, perhaps as a gift for someone this holiday season, then you may want to hit up Dell. The computer company is <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Wii/productdetail.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;cs=19&amp;sku=A0764619">offering</a> the console for $179.99 (as part of a sale that expires tomorrow), complete with free 3-to-5-day shipping, on its web store. If you snag the console and, say, a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit-plus">Wii Fit Plus</a> </em>bundle, you could inspire a great holiday for someone special -- or gravely upset them by insinuating they could stand to lose a few pounds. <br /><br />[Thanks <a href="http://www.gamerztech.com/">Matthew</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/02/dell-selling-wii-for-179-99-with-free-shipping/">Dell selling Wii for $179.99 (with free shipping)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 11:15:00 EST. Alienware is expanding their global reach this year, offering their products in 35 countries, including Russia, China, Japan, Korea, Latin America and Brazil. So why is it that the company is axing an indeterminate number of employees? Simple: to take care of redundancies. Alienware's parent, Dell, is looking to consolidate many of the divisions both companies share, such as accounting, finance, and others. Alienware spokesman Winnie Wong said the consolidation is "putting two teams together into one unbeatable team."<br /><br />Dell has been <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/03/25/dell-tries-to-go-down-market/">hard-hit</a> by the sagging economy -- the decision to layoff employees at its high-end Alienware division seems logical. Wong reiterates that, in spite of the layoffs, the Alienware brand will still remain intact. "We will still build the brand, still have our own position to represent the Dell gaming brand," she said. "A lot of the products' messaging will still be intact."<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/03/24/dells-alienware-unit-to-lay-off-unknown-amount-of-workers/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/alienware-to-layoff-workers-in-spite-of-global-expansion/">Alienware to lay off workers, in spite of global expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 05:00:00 EST. If you're stlll Xbox 360-less and looking for a deal, then don't bother with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/microsoft-confirms-xbox-360-60gb-for-349-20gb-now-at-299/">$299 clearance-sale 20GB Xbox 360</a> ... or the new $349 60GB 360 for that matter. Dell.com has the $450 Xbox 360 Elite for the low, low price of $299. But that's not all! If you act now (or, presumably, at any point between now and when they inevitably sell out) you'll also get copies of <em>Marvel: Ultimate Alliance</em> and <em>Forza 2</em>, along with two rather unseemly faceplates.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> The promotion has ended -- it's back to $450.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/08/06/dell-selling-xbox-360-elite-bundle-for-299/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/06/dell-com-299-xbox-360-elite-2-games-2-faceplates/">Dell.com: $299 Xbox 360 Elite, 2 games, 2 faceplates [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 17:41:00 EST. Pricing for the bundle is back up to $449. Sad ...<br /><br />Here's an Xbox 360 deal for you. That's a $150 savings off the retail price! We aren't sure exactly why these Elite bundles are so darn cheap, but if we had to guess, it'd be because of a little <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/price-cut">price cutting event</a> that'll be happening next month. Numerous reports are floating to the shore of Bloglandia in neat little bottles that speak of Blu-ray drives getting placed in Apple and Dell laptops starting later this year. The issue is battery life -- apparently watching a Blu-ray movie on laptops absolutely drains the battery. Assuming it's not plugged in. We feel like we've heard these rumors a long time ago, but they died off inexplicably. Perhaps Blu-ray being declared the "winner" turned old rumors into truth?<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.tech.co.uk/computing/mobile-computing/news/blu-ray-laptops-coming-from-apple-and-dell?articleid=541414266&amp;print=true&amp;page=1">Tech.co.uk</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/blu-ray-makin-its-way-into-apple-and-dell-laptops/">Blu-ray makin' its way into Apple and Dell laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 22:30:00 EST. <br />Whenever accessory manufacturer Thrustmaster comes up in conversation -- and it often does -- we can't help but imagine the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/simpsons"><em>Simpsons'</em></a> Duff Man character <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZFnjJ6TBWvs">stabbing the air with his pelvis</a>. So, if you hear us suddenly yell out, "Oh yeah!" now you understand what provoked our involuntary impulse.<br /><br />Despite the distracting nature of its company name, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Thrustmaster/">Thrustmaster</a> successfully put together an acceptable alternative to Nintendo's Classic Controller and WaveBird with several advantages over its first-party competition:<br />
<ol>
    <li>Togglable rumble via switch</li>
    <li>Doesn't depend on a Wii remote hookup for wireless functionality, using a GameCube port dongle instead<br /></li>
    <li>Xbox-like shoulder button layout</li>
    <li>Turbo and slow modes</li>
    <li>Mappable buttons</li>
</ol>
Best of all, Dell's online shop is currently selling Thrustmaster's T-Wireless NW Gamepad for only $13.59 ($19.99 MSRP) until December 13th! Check out more photos from <a href="http://gear.ign.com/articles/838/838868p1.html">IGN's favorable review</a> past the break. Like an unholy alliance, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dell">Dell</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> have teamed up to unleash this beast of a laptop computer into the world. The <span style="width: 728px;"><a href="http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/m1730_wow?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;dgc=EM&amp;cid=26383&amp;lid=601037">XPS M1730 World of Warcraft Edition</a> comes in Horde and Alliance flavors, and sells for $4,499 USD. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wow"><em>WoW</em></a>, indeed.<br /><br />Admittedly, you get a lot more than just the laptop for nearly five large. The deal includes a <em>WoW</em>-branded backpack, a "golden ticket" entitling the buyer to a FigurePrint of their in-game avatar, a special key to all future <em>WoW</em> betas, and a plethora of </span><span style="width: 728px;"><em>Warcraft </em>merchandise, including novels, trading cards, soundtrack CDs, strategy guides, and a behind-the-scenes DVD disc.<br /><br /></span><span style="width: 728px;">The computer itself is a 17" widescreen notebook, with backlit keyboard, illuminated speaker grills, and a built-in LCD screen dedicated to displaying in-game stats. The laptop also comes pre-loaded with <em>World of Warcraft</em>, as well as <em>The Burning Crusade</em> expansion. We haven't done the math, but we're pretty sure it's still not a bargain. The <em>New York Times</em> today <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/23/technology/23gaming.html?_r=1&amp;th&amp;emc=th&amp;oref=login">takes a look</a> at a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/24/pc-gaming-market-healthy-shows-signs-of-growth/">recent upturn</a> in the PC games market, partially fueled by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/world-of-warcraft-breaks-8-million-subscribers/">phenomenal success</a> of <em>World of Warcraft</em> and the imitators it has spawned.<br /><br />Don't cancel your console development plans yet, though. While domestic PC game sales were up 48 percent to $203 million in the first two months of 2007, the PC market was still dwarfed by the $990 million spent on console games during the same period. And while efforts like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/18/games-for-windows-vista-how-a-new-brand-and-os-will-change-pc-gam/">Games for Windows</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/06/hp-wants-to-bridge-between-pcs-and-consoles-behind-the-scenes/">HP's gaming initiative</a> are likely to help attract attention to computer games, it's hard to match the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/12/nintendo-wii-marketing-to-exceed-200-million/">focused</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/05/13/microsofts-disruptive-xbox-360-marketing/">marketing</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/05/13/microsofts-disruptive-xbox-360-marketing/">muscle</a> of the big three console makers. So while PC gaming may not be dying, it's not exactly threatening to take over the country, either. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/02/china-online-gaming-trends/">The rest of the world</a>, on the other hand ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/ny-times-on-pc-game-biz-rebound/">NY Times on PC game biz rebound</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 12:10:00 EST. Now is the chance to prove him wrong, thanks to a nice <a href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;cs=19&amp;sku=A1118814">offer</a> from Dell. If you've been waiting for a good reason to pick up an Xbox 360 (Premium, of course), how does a free copy of <em>Gears of War</em> sound? Sounds pretty good, right? Well then head on over to Dell and you can pick up an Xbox 360 Premium and a copy of <em>Gears</em> for the reasonable price of $399. Not too shabby, if you ask us (which you didn't, but just pretend, okay?). Even if you have one, you could always use another. You know, so you'll have one for the parlor. People still have parlors, right? Alternately, you could buy it as an early Easter present. Just stick it in a basket with some neon green plastic grass and you're done.<br /><br />If your interested, you'd better hurry, because <em>Gears</em> is only included in the bundle while supplies last. <br /><br />Anyone plan on picking this up?<br /><br />[Thanks, laserboyjc]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/23/buy-a-premium-360-from-dell-get-gow-free/">Buy a Premium 360 from Dell, get GOW free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2007 11:45:00 EST. However, due to Dell's strong partnerships with Microsoft and Intel, expect any potential gaming device from the company to more closely resemble an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) than a PSP. However, considering PSP's strong <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/01/sony-to-compete-against-nintendo-with-psps-multimedia-features/">non-gaming focus</a>, a new gaming-oriented handheld from Dell will compete more against the PSP than Nintendo's dual-screened portable.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/31/rumor-dell-considers-gaming-handheld/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/01/dell-to-enter-portable-gaming-arena/">Dell to enter portable gaming arena?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Feb 2007 13:20:00 EST. Not likely, but it sounds like they might have found another option.<br /><br />Dell's Global Gaming Chief Abizar Vakharia, at a European Innovation event in Marbella, Spain, was quoted as saying "you know, [a future gaming handheld is] definitely one that's on the radar screen, but we have no plans to talk about anything today."<br /><br />Dell has shown <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dell">great interest</a> in touting itself as the premier hardware for PC gaming, even buying game-centric hardware company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/16/dells-alienware-purchase-the-week-after-the-morning-after/">Alienware</a>. Will Dell make a portable PC with a size similar to PSP? Probably, and they'll probably market its "awesome graphics and gaming capabilities." But it doesn't sound like that hardware will surface anytime soon, assuming it passes the prototype stage. We'll still <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/02/dell-pretends-to-understand-gamers/">lament</a> the plethora of garbage-ware that they'll fill the device with.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/31/dell-working-on-a-gaming-handheld/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/31/rumor-dell-considers-gaming-handheld/">Rumor: Dell considers gaming handheld</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Jan 2007 21:05:00 EST. Originally, Sony's profits were going to meet or exceed 1.1 billion dollars. This is pretty much a 50% loss. That sucks. Legal action against Sony would vastly increase this percentage loss as well. Those will probably come rolling in sooner or later, since law suits are so freakin' popular anymore. Not that we blame the other companies. <br /><br />Dell was the first to experience this pain, as the picture illustrates -- a Dell notebook violently exploding into flames at a seminar in Osaka. What did Sony say in response? An anonymous representative said "the battery fires were actually sparked by the effect of Dell's hardware on the faulty batteries." Now, let's take a moment of humor from all this seriousness. Could it be that the Microsoft Windows and the Sony battery got into a brawl and the puny Dell exploded from all the competitive tension? It's just kind of funny that things with both Microsoft and Sony don't agree (unless it's this Sony Vaio, apparently).<br /><br />Now, not to sound elitist, but <em>this</em> is what we should be concentrating on. Sure, it's not "video game news", it's not the ever-so-important "console war", but it's incredibly pertinent to the video game console business as a whole -- if Sony gets knocked around for faulty batteries badly enough, they might have to pull out of a market completely. Will it be the video game console market? Probably not, unless the PS3 garners enough bad press to hinder sales (it's getting close).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/06/sony-to-lose-estimated-560m-on-batteries-ps3/">Sony to lose estimated $560m on batteries, PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Oct 2006 12:30:00 EST. Voodoo will continue to operate -- now under the HP umbrella -- with co-owners Rahul and Ravi Sood staying on with HP jobs. The acquisition should close by November, after the requisite approvals by shareholders and the SEC.<br /><br />Well look who's following Dell (which bought Alienware earlier this year). While this sort of buyout must take months or years of anticipation, we think the timing is a little more than coincidental; HP is currently being scrutinized by the press, Wall Street, and Congress for spying on media outlets and its board members. There's nothing like a good, old-fashioned buyout to push your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/22/hp-chairwoman-patricia-dunn-resigns-effective-immediately/">scandal</a> out of the headlines.<br /><br />[Thanks, Derek]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/29/hp-to-buy-voodoo-dont-think-about-hp-scandal/">HP to buy Voodoo, don't think about HP scandal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Sep 2006 18:10:00 EST. And after sitting through the chat, I have one important question -- where was the fire? Well, while I sit here and grumble about false advertising, you can read on to find out some of the topics Dell touched on in this Q&amp;A session -- which focused on the PC's place in the gaming industry, and why you should buy a PC instead of a console.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/08/michael-dell-at-the-austin-game-conference/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Michael Dell at the Austin Game Conference</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/08/michael-dell-at-the-austin-game-conference/">Michael Dell at the Austin Game Conference</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Sep 2006 08:00:00 EST. It wasn't some new gadget, but instead an ad for Dell's gaming PC <a href="http://www.dell.com/html/us/products/e3/index.html?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs">lineup</a>. Hijacking the 1337 speak of gamers everywhere, Dell has adopted "FTW" (For the win) to push their PC gaming rigs.<br /><br />Now, some of us at the office think this is the coolest thing since sliced wheat bread, but there's also a group of us who feel whenever we see corporate America take something near and dear to our nerdy hearts, it's a signal that that phrase or terminology is now dead in the water. How do you feel about it? Once phrases like "FTW" or "O Rly?" pop up everywhere, does it suddenly mean it's not cool to say anymore?<br /><br /> See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/15/dungeon-siege-reaches-new-low-with-in-game-ad/">Ad critic: Dungeon Siege reaches new low</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/21/ad-critic-wii-nimilast-print-ad/">Ad critic: Wii-nimilast print ad</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/15/ad-critic-retro-perfect-dark-n64/" rel="bookmark"><span id="pt643335">Ad critic retro: Perfect Dark</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/04/ad-critic-sonys-racially-charged-psp-ad/">Ad critic: "Racist" PSP ad</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/30/ad-critic-superman-made-by-super-people/">Ad critic: <em>Superman</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/29/ad-critic-auto-assault-mmorpg/">Ad critic: <em>Auto Assault</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/21/ad-critic-oblivion-ad-hot-or-not/">Ad critic: <em>Oblivion</em> </a>, <a href="http://hacks.joystiq.com/2006/04/14/ad-critic-laras-booty-too-big-to-believe/">Ad critic: <em>Tomb Raider</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/07/ad-critic-hitman-advertisement/3">Ad critic: <em>Hitman</em></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/24/ad-critic-dell-gaming-goes-ftw/">Ad critic: Dell gaming goes FTW!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Aug 2006 13:55:00 EST. You won't be surprised to read that this card is fast when compared to its predecessors. It positively destroyed all the other single-GPU cards the Techreport guys tested it against; in <em>Battlefield 2</em> the GX2 managed <em>"twice the average frame rate of the GeForce 7900 GT." </em>As you probably already know, this kind of performance doesn't come cheap. NVIDIA expects the 7950 GX2 to cost around $599 to $649, and that's before you check your power bill: in tests the card drew 133 Watts at idle and a whopping 237 Watts under load. In comparison to the card's main single-GPU rival, ATI's X1900, the 7950 featured similar levels of power consumption, size and heat output but performed significantly faster in all the benchmarks. The 7950's dual-GPU solution also surpasses the performance of traditional SLI configurations like dual 7900 GTs, with the added advantage of being compatible with any PCI-e motherboard chipset. <br /><br />Strangely, the biggest problem that the review found had nothing to do with the card itself. Although the 7950 GX2 is perfectly capable of being partnered up with another card to make a Quad-SLI system, nVIDIA refuses to support this type of configuration, citing the "complexity" involved. The only way you'll be able to get a Quad-SLI setup is by either hacking two cards together or by purchasing a (some say overpriced) system from Alienware, Falcon Northwest or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/06/dells-latest-xps-pc-features-support-for-quad-graphics/">Dell.</a><br /><br />The company went as far as refusing to supply the website with a second review card. As the reviewer points out <em>"when explaining to your best customers why they can't purchase two of your $649 video cards for themselves without also buying a $5K PC built by someone else, it's probably not good idea to use a shaky excuse with an embedded insult."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/05/nvidia-denies-enthusiasts-the-quad-sli-goodness/">NVIDIA denies enthusiasts the Quad-SLI goodness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Jun 2006 14:55:00 EST. All right, not too shabby, but that's not what the hardcore PC gamers are interested in, now is it? They want to hear about Dell's new, <em>enormous</em>, XPS 700 desktop. <br /><br />Dell's XPS 700 desktops pack some <a href="http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_700?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;~section=specs#tabtop">serious power</a>, but at what cost? </span></span><span class="para"><span>This thing sizes up to 21.86" x 8.6" x 24.25" making it, volumetrically, 74707 cm^3. I checked the math ... twice! <br /><br />Alright, so it's not winning any performance per cubic centimeter contests anytime soon, but the XPS 700 isn't supposed to be a pint-sized pixie. Think of it as the sort of computer that will not only run <em>Doom III</em> really well <em>but</em> look like it had a cameo in the game. Outfitted with a bunch of red LEDs and optional Quad-SLI, this thing is sure to melt your eyeballs, both literally and figuratively.<br /><br /></span></span>[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/31/dell-brings-two-new-xps-models-to-the-us/">Engadget</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs">Read</a> - XPS M1210 Laptop<br /><a href="http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_700?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs">Read</a> - XPS 700 Desktop<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/01/dell-drops-two-new-xps-models-one-big-one-small/">Dell drops two new XPS models; one big, one small</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jun 2006 18:35:00 EST. <p>Adams already mentioned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/dell-gaming-preview-the-xps-desktop/">Dell's gaming desktop</a> that is part of their efforts to re-invigorate PC gaming for them. Dell is hoping to "up the cool factor over the next couple of years," particularly with several design concepts for their mobile gaming system, XPS M1710. Dell execs presented four designs, one of which is based on the fiery <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/22/dell-xps-600-renegade-goes-on-sale-for-10k/">Renegade System</a> that was unveiled at CES earlier this year; "True Fire" laptop is done by the same artist.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dell asked us for feedback on&nbsp;the four concepts, which also included&nbsp;"Acid Green," "Alien Invasion," (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/16/dells-alienware-purchase-the-week-after-the-morning-after/">alien invasion, huh</a>?)and "Blue Skullz."&nbsp;Everyone sounded positive for the most part, though I did overhear something about Trapper Keepers. They are looking for general feedback from the public on their <a href="http://www.dell.com/e3">website</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also inquired about designs that would be geared toward girls. "You mean like pink? Floral?" Uh, <em>oooookay</em>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/dells-design-concepts-for-xps-m1710/">Dell's design concepts for XPS M1710</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 May 2006 07:06:00 EST. A special edition gaming desktop from Dell which is boasting a fancy facade that X3 enthusiasts will appreciate, that's what. They invited us down today and let us take a gander at their prototype.<br /><br />They didn't tell us anything juicy about stuff like the components, pricing or a release date. The directors who headed up the presentation were mainly looking for some feedback from the gaming community. One of the interesting things with this new minimalistic design is the complete air flow from rear to front. Unfortunately, everything they showed us was purely aesthetic, so we'll have to hold out for a bit longer to find out about anything else.<br /><br />[Reposted due to technical difficulties.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/dell-gaming-preview-the-xps-desktop/">Dell gaming preview: The XPS desktop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 May 2006 22:30:00 EST. According to the same guys <a
href="http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=OTI0">who reported the problem</a>, Dell are making efforts to clean up their
act. On select XPS machine there is now effectively a "no-bloatware" option with no AOL installation, no
"media jukebox" and no free ISP options.<br /><br />We're still not satisfied, for the following
reasons:<br />
<ul>
    <li><strong>Why <a
href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;%7Etopic=gaming#"><em>"select
XPS machines"</em></a>?</strong> Yeah, we know how cut-throat the profit margins are in the PC industry, but isn't
Dell's XPS range supposed to be a premium product? As far as I can tell, the option is only available on XPS 400 and
600 systems, not the XPS 200 machines (which are priced identically to the XPS 400 PCs).<br /></li>
    <li><strong>Bad
wording.</strong> Dell's wording of the option makes it seem as if consumers will be missing out by taking the option.
<em>"Now with limited pre-installed software"</em> doesn't sound too appealing to the average consumer
unaware of the fact that pre-installed software means the software equivalent of garbage.</li>
    <li><strong>More bad
wording.</strong> When you actually get to configuring your machine, the site offers you <em>"no pre-installed
software [included in price]".</em> Gee, thanks Dell for not charging us for non-existent software! <br /></li>

 <li><strong>Even more bad wording.</strong> The banner <em><a
href="http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=us&amp;cs=19&amp;l=en&amp;s=dhs&amp;%7Etopic=gaming#">"You
Spoke, We Listened"</a></em> means nothing to anyone that hasn't read about this issue previously.</li>
