After doing work-for-hire projects with their new company in the mid '90s, they finally released a passion project, called <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/carmageddon"><em>Carmageddon</em></a>, which featured goofy and gory, over-the-top vehicular carnage, and still claims a place in the heart of older PC gamers everywhere. In order to get published, they sold rights for the title to SCI, which co-published the game with Interplay.<br /> <br /> The title was followed up with a sequel in 1998 (it was called <em>Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now</em>, back when games could be called things like that), but when the sequel didn't do as well, the worst happened: Buckland and Barnden lost their own creation. They've spent years since then trying to get the rights back.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/">Carmageddon Reincarnation (PC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009769"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009770"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009771"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009772"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009773"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/carmageddon-earns-reincarnation-as-a-kickstarter-project/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/carmageddon-earns-reincarnation-as-a-kickstarter-project/">Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. We popped by Atomic Games' booth here at PAX to check out <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/breach">Breach</a></em>, the dev's attempt to take on DICE's online-only, digitally distributed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/battlefield-1943"><em>Battlefield 1943</em></a>. <br />
<br />
Atomic president Peter Tamte revealed during our play session that he hoped to get <em>Breach</em> on XBLA this summer (as previously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/atomic-games-breaks-out-breach-details/">estimated</a>), and that the developer is targeting a $15 price point. Considering how polished the game was in the state we saw it, we certainly believe it can meet that deadline. Look for our hands-on impressions later today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/breach-expected-to-launch-this-summer-on-xbla-for-15/">Breach expected to launch this summer on XBLA for $15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 20:20:00 EST. Dear Mr. Larson,<br /> <br /> Congratulations! With your recent purchase of our <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/11/sonys-bravia-kdl-46v5100-lcd-hdtv-goes-on-sale/">46-inch Bravia KDL46X 3100 LCD TV</a>, you're eligible to receive a free PlayStation 3 -- provided you haven't changed your address, and still live in Australia. Funny story: You're actually the last person that's eligible to receive the free console with the TV's purchase. "Lucky Number 25,000," we've been calling you around the office. I'm running to the stockroom right now, so I can ship your console and television to you <em>personally</em>, along with a very heartfelt letter of gratitude.<br /> <br /> <em>Oh, crap</em>. Listen, Mr. Larson -- I might have forgotten something ... <em>important</em>. See, to promote this offer, we <em>may</em> have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/21/ps3-crashes-into-bravia-tv-at-50-mph-for-fun-and-profit-video/">flung the last PlayStation 3 <em>into</em> your Bravia television</a> at 50 mph. By "may have flung," of course, I mean "totally did fling." If it makes you feel any better, it was a <em>really</em> good ad (check it out after the jump)! Very thought-provoking, and even a little cheeky. Just know that your television and video game console died for a worthwhile cause. (What? No! <em>Of course</em> there are no refunds. Don't be silly.)<br /> <br /> Love, <br /> Sony Australia.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/sony-australia-flings-a-ps3-into-a-bravia-technophiles-cringe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Australia flings a PS3 into a Bravia, technophiles cringe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/sony-australia-flings-a-ps3-into-a-bravia-technophiles-cringe/">Sony Australia flings a PS3 into a Bravia, technophiles cringe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 11:30:00 EST. At a recent THQ game event, another writer asked me about the original <em>Red Faction</em>. I told him it was one of the first games to use destructible environments. And then as I kept talking, I added qualifiers and backed off from that statement. Eventually, I rambled on to say it was also the first not-fully-successful game to do that in a long line of unsuccessful games. It was still cool -- smashing through a window was impressive -- but it didn't give the destroy-anything sense that the developers pushed.<br /><br />Due late this year, <em>Red Faction: Guerrilla</em> could finally deliver on that promise, although it has caveats of its own. Still on Mars, this time you play almost the entire game above ground. I had fun smashing holes into buildings and even destroying them with a sledgehammer. But I missed the underground, mining elements of the original. If everything is supposed to be destructible, why not the ground, too?<br /><br />On a technical and design level, it makes sense that a destructible ground would be a lot to ask. But it sure would be satisfying. Even without that option, <em>Red Faction: Guerrilla</em> could be a great game<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/">Red Faction: Guerrilla</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935192"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935191"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935190"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935189"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935188"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/joystiq-hands-on-red-faction-guerrilla-360-pc-ps3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: Red Faction: Guerrilla (360/PC/PS3)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/joystiq-hands-on-red-faction-guerrilla-360-pc-ps3/">Joystiq hands-on: Red Faction: Guerrilla (360/PC/PS3)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. I guess wasting $150 is really popular with the kids these days ... especially those from the Czech Republic. A series of videos called PSP Destruction can be found on YouTube. These videos, from the "mind" of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=FaNitos">FaNitos</a>, chronicle the adventures of masked hoodlums trying to destroy every PSP ever. They're already up to an eigth episode (shown above), showing more dedication to the system than most. What's their problem?</p><p>At least <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBULW3VLsnw">D2Stemcell</a> won't shell out real money to destroy a PSP. His solution? Do it virtually. While he isn't wasting money, he's wasting something far more valuable: time. Christopher Ferguson, a Ph.D faculty member at the university's department of behavioral, applied sciences and criminal justice, conducted a "meta-analysis" of studies associating violent video game exposure with aggressive behaviors. A look at the overall result of studies in the field showed violent video games increase people's aggressive thoughts, not necessarily action.<br /><br />That's like if you watch a comedy it increases funny thoughts, or after watching a melodrama it increases Japanese RPG thoughts. For the violent game studies to have some validity, the key is for a study to prove that violent video games don't just cause thoughts of violence, but violence itself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/study-evidence-low-that-video-games-cause-violence/">Study: Evidence low that video games cause violence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 13:15:00 EST. So we gathered up some convenient implements of destruction and saw how our free copy of Talladega Nights would stand up to a ballpoint pen, a pizza cutter and a butcher's knife (unfortunately, the disc broke down before we could rub crunchy cereal all over it.) Check out the video below, and keep watching to the end for some pyrotechnic bonus footage.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/19/we-destroy-a-blu-ray-disc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>We destroy a Blu-ray Disc</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/19/we-destroy-a-blu-ray-disc/">We destroy a Blu-ray Disc</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Jan 2007 19:05:00 EST. Slow news day? You betcha! Today's video theme seems to be PSP abuse. I don't know about you, but I don't like buying a $200 piece of gadgetry and then destroying it for the sake of "entertainment." Didn't a group of Japanese kids do that a while back? Why is this entertaining? <strong>Why do people do this?</strong> I don't really understand, but at the very least, I have to give props to the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivX7B4BRWG8">people above</a> for using <em>explosives</em>. To the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKQjVyRQ2m4">kid below</a>, you're not too cool.<br />
