Getting gifts and embarrassing ourselves while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol are reasons enough to count down until the new year, but Capcom has given us another reason to continue to mark through days on the kitchen calender, announcing plans to release a free playable demo of Devil May Cry 4 over both the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in early 2008.

It's unclear exactly what will be included in the demo, with Capcom saying only that the download will serve to introduce the game's new hero, Nero, and feature levels "chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4's varied locales and allow gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero's unique abilities." The demo will also include in-game instructions on how to use DMC4's Exceed sword charge system and various superhuman abilities, made possible by Nero's "Devil Bringer" powers, and will be capped off with a fight against a surly boss named Berial. We hope the boss has insurance, because players have been waiting a long time revisit Devil May Cry, and we imagine Berial is going to buried many times before the game's February 5, 2008 release.
Devil May Cry 4 demo confirmed for PSN, XBL in early 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. Unless you want to hear the incredibly loud sounds of E3 sprinkled with some DMC4 music, we're just warning you. Of course, there are more than one new trailer for Devil May Cry 4 up at Gametrailers, but we're just giving you a small taste of what the latest build of Capcom's title looks like. It looks very smooth, but still lacking that signature difficulty. By all means, the guy playing the demo should be getting his bum handed to him, since he's not playing that expertly. On the other hand, the enemies are all very simple and basic too, so perhaps Capcom is saving the more extreme enemies for the more extreme crowd -- those who buy the game.
Some Devil May Cry 4 action, since it's been a while originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 15 Jul 2007 10:00:00 EST. They finally got the answer everyone has been arguing over: why did DMC4 go multiplatform? We're satisfied with the answer, so we'll outline that along with other queries asked below.

About the move toward multiple platforms, Kobayashi said "We're using an engine called Framework for development, and it's extremely easy to have a multiplatform strategy including the PC. You can say that Devil May Cry 4 is the first such offering. With the increase in platforms, we have the chance of more people being able to play the game, so we're also happy as developers." The strong name of the game overseas help, too, he said.

The game is definitely built originally on the PS3 and ported to other systems (which will yield better ports to other systems and easier for the developers). Kobayashi said that "we've just started with the Xbox 360 version following the announcement, so there's still a ways to go." If the PS3 version is nearly complete, can't we just get it now? We wanna play.

The content, as we've said before, will be the same across platforms. Minor graphical differences may exist, plus the PS3 can install the game onto the hard drive, but the game will play the same regardless. Kobayashi laments, "We wanted to avoid arguments about which one is better."

The game will indeed run at 60fps. Kobayashi actually claimed keeping to that goal has proven to be one of the biggest challenges in developing for next-gen consoles so far.

Finally, we've been told to expect an advanced build of the game at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September. It wasn't made clear if it will be any specific console build, but we'd anticipate a booth for both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. Not for comparison purposes, but just to show how they're progressing. So they say.
Devil May Cry producer may cry if system wars continue originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Jun 2007 18:00:00 EST. If you don't know, the protagonist featured so far is in fact Nero, though he bears a striking resemblance to Dante. Among other things, Dante has duel-wielded pistols, which are so popular with the kids these days. The clip is very short, but it does showcase some pretty nifty maneuvers for Dante. While I've recently been lost in the insanely difficult DS title Etrian Odyssey, my mind has often wondered as to whether this title will retain the difficulty set by the third entry. If you don't like tough games, you shouldn't climb into the ring. Hopefully this game will be tough, but not so hard as to turn people off of getting into the fight. If for some reason you can't see the video above, please check it out at its hosted site.

Also of note is that Peter Dille, Senior Marketing VP for Sony, announced that DMC4 was built for the PlayStation 3 hardware then ported down to other systems. Someone else said that if games were started on the PS3 and ported elsewhere, quality would not drop and the PS3 version would look spectacular. Good news for us, then!

[Thanks a lot, Cagalli!]
Tired of Nero? Dubbed Gamer's Day Galleries, you'll know exactly what you're getting into. This first gallery has a few gorgeous high-res shots from Devil May Cry 4 -- nothing surprisingly new, but they're great to look at. Smooth, gigantic bosses, fast-paced action ... this game's got it all, if you like that sort of thing. Everyone that has read this site for more than a day know my feelings about the DMC franchise, so of course I think these screens look great. Look for the game by the end of the year, probably October.

SGD '07: Devil May Cry 4 gallery originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 May 2007 03:01:00 EST. Because they matter. As a child may persist in asking, why? The answer... they don't. If enjoyment is gleaned from a game, does it really matter that the wall textures aren't quite as smooth, or the characters aren't as freakishly shiny? Nick says, "not really". But then again, Nick doesn't own any other next-gen consoles besides the PS3 (he has his reasons, it actually has nothing to do with "fanboyism" or "loyalty").

Third-person rants aside, Devil May Cry 4 is inevitably going to get compared between the 360 and PS3 versions. Capcom ensures their rabid/adoring fans that the two builds will be "pretty much" identical. An anonymous dev said: "As far as the Xbox [360] and the PS3 are concerned, the capabilities and the features in the game, we expect will be the same. Our plan is to pretty much make them identical. You may be able to use some of the functionality in the PS3 as like a switch, but nothing spectacular." Let's see what the game is like by the end of the year, hmmkay?
No difference noted between Devil May Cry 4 versions originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. Firstly, he describes the game's lead character, Nero, and his weapons -- a big sword called the Red Queen and a revolver called the Blue Rose. That's all well and good, but the real sound bite concerns the game's multiplatform status. Regarding the disparities between the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Devil May Cry 4, Kobayashi says, "Our plan is to make them pretty much identical."

In the unending flame war of console superiority, this is quite a statement. Kobayashi notes that there may be some functionality in the PS3 version not included in the 360 version. The statement is poorly translated though, so we're not exactly sure what that functionality will be (motion control, perhaps?). At any rate, the upshot is this: if you have to play Devil May Cry 4, you might as well do it for $200 less, because you won't be missing anything on the Xbox 360.

[Via Joystiq]
DMC4 on 360 and PS3: identical originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. After the week long stint of DMC4 news, what else could be discussed other than some hands-on impressions? Well, they've got a lot to say, but we'll keep it as short as possible just because we know you've got a lot to do on a Sunday.

The gameplay has gotten so finely tuned and sharp that it was instantly gripping while remaining challenging.

Some things don't feel next-gen about the game (at least, this early demo): the whole "kill all the enemies in the room to magically unlock the seal on the door" is a little worn-out.

The most important aspect of the game, at least with Nero, is the Devil Bringer. It completely changes the shoot/slice formula... being extremely responsive and refined doesn't hurt. And charging up your sword by throttling it like a motorcycle is neat, too.

The artificial intelligence is supposed to be top-notch, but not in the demo they played, apparently. Although it was more of a tutorial level, making the enemies dumb, they didn't exhibit much advanced AI.

Boss battles? Still intense and difficult. Failing only makes you want to defeat the monster more!

Crossing levels swiftly via the Hell Bound teleport move may portend a more engrossing exploration element in the final build.

Dante is ready to fight -- he's got his skills from Devil May Cry 3 as well as instant weapon-swapping. But only the developers got to show him off.

But what makes the game fresh? "This is a game made by a man who cut his teeth on fighting games, and combat is the number one priority here. Throwing an enemy up into the air, slashing it with a sword, following that with a few quick shots and yanking and slamming it back into the ground is extremely addictive. The Devil Bringer is fully integrated - essential - to the combat, and is the key to what makes DMC4 feel fresh. The graphics, of course, are packed with detail and flash"

That's it for the week of Devil May Cry 4. We stretched it out a little longer, but whatever. Now, we'd love to hear about the trophies they have planned for Home. Who wouldn't want a life-sized statue of Dante for beating the game with all S-ranks? I'd take that over some worthless line of text telling me I "achieved" something anyday.
Devil May Cry 4 -- an inclusive hands-on preview originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Apr 2007 16:45:00 EST. He talked about his vision of the game and also a few other details we'll give you below. But watch the video. You get to see, pretty much, the entire first stage of the game.

All the animation, battle options, whatever... couldn't be done for the PS2.

They are fully taking advantage of the space available on Blu-ray as well as the PS3's standard hard drive. Installing the entire game on the hard drive will be possible and they'll compact the game as best they can to make that install as quick as possible.

60fps is the chosen option because the characters are so quick. While it makes the graphics nicer, the speed of gameplay is key. Having only 4 frames to choose an action is a much better choice with 60fps. So he says.

Itsuno says the only game similar to Devil May Cry is Ghosts N' Goblins. The difficulty, twitch timing reactions... sounds about right.

The Catch-22 of Japanese game development, as told by Itsuno, is that to get the budget to make a great game, it needs to appeal to a worldwide audience. This is probably why we don't see a lot of Shadow of the Colossus games, or artsy/niche games in general.

Along with Hideaki Itsuno, they interviewed Matoko Tanaka, the level designer as well as the artist who thought up Nero, Tatsuya Yoshikawa. All badasses do. Thus, on Wednesday, we are introduced to the specialties of Devil May Cry 4's main character as well as some of the bosses he'll be testing his skills against. Let's go!

So... they pretty much go over the controls for Nero. It's good to know, so we can imagine how the actual fighting will play out in our minds (for those who prefer playing games in their mind). Besides the general attack buttons, you have a gauge to power up that's separate from the standard "devil trigger", the ability to launch yourself long distances by using your crazy arm to snag blue spheres (in addition to grabbing enemies and throwing them all sorts of ways). It really sounds like the dev team has been trying very hard to make the new method of attacking flow with the established attacks. We're interested.

The other bit added to Wednesday's update is a run-through of all the main bosses you encounter in the previous Devil May Cry games. They did all right -- Nelo Angelo, Vergil, etc... but they missed one boss that was pretty important and just would not die. That crazy lava spider from the first game! It wouldn't leave you alone. Ever. Why was he important? No real reason, it's just what I think of when I try to recall how difficult some bosses can be.
DMC4 week, Wednesday: a boss and hero gala! originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 20:30:00 EST. They talked about this and that, those and these, them and they. We'll summarize the interviews because that's what's so darn fun about video games.

What's up with the Devil Bringer?
Itsuno: It's a new way to fight. Can't shoot 'em or slice 'em? Throw them around a bit. It adds a third way to deal out destruction! (I'm paraphrasing, clearly) Also, there's a lot more to it than we've seen. It can stop attacks, deflect, etc. A super awesome shield, of sorts.

Is there anything specific that you were able to do with the PS3? Anything... stylish?
Itsuno: There's stuff we thought we'd be able to do, but the time element kind of got in the way. There was a lot that we could do with the PS3 -- it's not the hardware's fault, but... we just don't have the time to implement everything we wanted. But don't worry... the gameplay is still pretty much the same. (I don't mind getting a new fix of the familiars)

Devil May Cry 2 sucked. Did anything that you learned from the other games carry over?
Itsuno: Sure. We want to fit in more enemies, better AI. But as far as games go, we're proud of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, so we'll probably use that as a frame of reference. Because it was freakin' awesome.

So what's the relationship between Nero and Dante? Will we be seeing any sexy slash in the future?
Kobayashi: "Dante is an enemy of Nero as he comes in and fights, but Nero doesn't know that Dante is actually a devil hunter."

The trailer yesterday wasn't true to the final product -- Dante will be in different places. So where will he be? Will he show up often?
Kobayashi: "...As the story progresses and there's a need for you to use Dante, you will be able to use him and it's pretty much well interlaced into the progression, the switch, between Nero and Dante. So you will be able to use Dante." Awesome!

Will you talk about the philosophy behind choosing Nero as lead instead of Dante?
Basically, Kobayashi said that Dante was so powerful at the end of the PS2 titles it wouldn't be enough to just play as him again. Enter Nero. Nero also serves as a new face for a new generation and audience -- so people can grow with him. But the veterans still get their Dante fix!

So, will this game do well on the PS3?
Kobayashi: "DMC4 will be at the top of the charts for a long time - at least two years, we expect. There won't be a game in two years to come along and be better than this game." Wow! Big words!

What do you feel about the PlayStation 3 as a platform?
Kobayashi: "Personally I like the look of the PS3 over the Xbox 360 - the external look and the sleekness of it - but that's just my personal preference." Hmm... sort of a dodgy answer, but we'll accept it. Our PS3's are very, very sexy.

Wednesday's news was released, so we'll type that up lickety-split. What a gross saying. There hadn't been a game quite like it (well, games with bad stories have always existed, but using the bad story as a cheesy joke is pretty cool too), and ever since there have been a lot of games that look and feel similar. The speed, intensity, difficulty, swords n' gun action... it was all there. According to this trailer released Monday, it's still there and looking awesome. We'll keep you posted on the week of DMC4 as it progresses. Because time will keep going.
Devil May Cry 4 week had started, this was Monday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. And we can't think of a better way to show off its progress than with a bunch of new flaming hot screenshots. Make the jump to see the latest screenshots showcasing what DMC 4 has to offer in the visuals department. From crazy motion blur effects to ultra bloomy specular bloom, DMC 4 has it all and a bag of BBQ chips (we couldn't resist).
New Devil May Cry 4 screens are HOT! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 09:30:00 EST. As many of you are already familiar, PSM has scored a huge 16-page exclusive on Devil May Cry 4 in their latest issue (in newsstands today). Their preview of the multi-platform action game has us yearning for more: "It's safe to say that the generational leap in hardware has not caused the series to lose sight of what it is: pure, all-out, unforgiving action ... Many mainstays from the series, including colored orbs, air juggling, and the Euro-gothic aesthetic remain intact- only everything is rendered in eye-blistering high-definition at a locked 60 frames per second."

While current subscribers are enjoying the dreamy pictures of Nero fighting demon hordes, the vigilant deal-watching group CAG has unearthed a fantastic deal for new subscriptions. 12 issues of PSM are now available for $5 at amazon.com, after instant rebate. While new subscribers are unlikely to receive the latest DMC4 blowout, one Lincoln is still a great deal for something to read when you absolutely have no access to PS3 Fanboy.
PSM brings DMC4 preview; gets cheap originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 23:00:00 EST. Still not really sure why he would compare it to Gears of War and Lost Planet instead of Virtua Fighter 5 and Genji or something.

What did the guy think of the level he was able to demo? It seemed to play great, but was sort of repetitive (understandable, although if you fight anything a few times in any game, repetitive can be an allocated descriptor). Hopefully the repetition slides away and is replaced with DMC3 difficulty. Graphics and effects were great, but the backgrounds seemed a little out of place, or didn't flow with the environments. Slightly jealous, but that's why I can just throw in the other odd-numbered titles of the series and get my fix.

[update: yeah, yeah, fixed the title, etc. Darned subject lines with their conspiracy-theory destroying abililites]
Devil May Cry 4 demo out in Japan kiosks... on PS3! So says Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, posting on the official Capcom forums in the midst of a Devil May Cry outcry. When asked by fans whether the company's new mulitplatform strategy would extend to their pair of successful Xbox 360 titles, Svensson explains that "Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3," noting that the reasons for the continued exclusivity "are quite convoluted" and are bound by a slew of suspicious non-disclosure agreements.

He goes on to say that Capcom's current approach -- which sees Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 coming to both PS3 and Xbox 360 -- is for future titles and isn't meant to be applied in a "retroactive" manner. Of course, this comes just days after Svensson used the forum to respond to sulking petitioners and their disdain for Devil May Cry gracing multiple platforms.

"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes," he said in a seperate thread. "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."

Apparently, Dead Rising and Lost Planet simply missed the multiplatform boat.
Earth-shattering announcements are made, megatons are dropped and the entire gaming community explodes and reconstitutes itself so often that the rest of the internet views it as a sort of radioactive leper who's constantly chasing after a pair of misplaced thumbs. Perhaps that's why, every now and then, we're good for a laugh.

Take this online petition, for instance. Whether it's made in jest or not doesn't really change the fact that it's absolutely hysterical. It seems a group of Devil May Cry fans are extremely upset about the game going to the Xbox 360 and PC in addition to the PS3 -- so much so that they're going to boycott Capcom and not buy either version. As the internets are fond of saying, "Oh noes!"

"We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games," it reads. "This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold our option of buying your product."

Oh dear, Capcom. Not only have you gone and left people out by making your game available to more gamers (not to be confused with fans, apparently), but you've demoralized a huge corporation! Absolutely fiendish.

[Via NeoGAF, of course]
Loyalists cry over Devil May Cry on Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 22:15:00 EST. It's basically just a mishmash of gameplay segments. One thing we have to point out is the game's combo system. Like many games, Devil May Cry 4 appears to employ a combat multiplier. The one shown in the video showcases different grades: D, C, B, A, and S. Under normal circumstances this wouldn't really even be worth mentioning, but each grade has a little phrase to go with it. Unfortunately, it looks like Capcom decided to pull these phrases off of a '90s era high school trapper keeper. Behold the horrifying list:

D -- "Do it!"
C -- "Come on!"
B -- "Big up!"
A -- "All that!"
S -- "Slammin beat!"

Call us critical, but these phrases seem to clash just a little with rapid fire demon slaying. At least the game looks fun, right?
Devil May Cry 4 trailer: slammin beat! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 14:05:00 EST. We all know that. But just what is Devil May Cry 4? It occurred to us that dedicated 360 fanboys may not be familiar with the game. It looks like the same idea occurred to GameTrailers as well, because they've posted the Tokyo Game Show trailer of the game on the front page. As a service to our readers, we've embedded the trailer at the top of this post (you can grab it in HD here). The title of the e-mail was something like "Fanboy Damage Control Time" and it intrigued us enough to give it the old clickerooney. We got a link to a website called Fan Boys Must Die -- on it was a large thread of the "favorite" comments left behind by people on multiple websites. PS3 Fanboy is the second one listed! How nice!

This is your time to shine, intrepid readers! In fact, if your quote was chosen, you've got to be pretty excited. You left an impact! Also of note is the overwhelming mockery taking place on Joystiq, Major Nelson, and the moderate competence displayed on the official PlayStation forums (spelling aside... no one on the internet can spell anymore). Damage control, spin control, whatever you want to call it, this is an interesting read just to see how extremely some people react.

[Thanks, Robert!]
Your 15 minutes of fame, fanboy style! originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 16:30:00 EST. Are we surprised? No, not really. Capcom has been very open about expanding its properties, making a particular effort to develop titles on PCs, which makes quick console ports a snap. And of course, DMC4 has been rumored for a while, too (does this mean MS will be buying Capcom after all?).

But seriously, what's next? Tekken? Kingdom Hearts? Who knows. Right now we're excited enough for the third person action promised by DMC4. Anyone glad to see this show up on the Xbox 360? For that matter, was anyone planning to buy a PS3 just for Devil May Cry 4?

[Thanks, Machiavelli 420. Sony's list of PS3-exclusive third party games continues to diminish. Capcom has just announced their plans to make Devil May Cry 4 a multi-platform game. The game is now in development for the Xbox 360 and the PC, with the 360 version launching simultaneously as the PS3 version.

"Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal," said Mark Beaumont , executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe said in the latest press release.

While making the game accessible to the largest audience possible is admirable, Sony must now ensure that they do not lose further exclusives. Currently, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are still slated for PS3-exclusive release, but Sony must make every effort that Konami and Square Enix don't follow suit.
Devil May Cry 4 no longer a PS3 exclusive originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 22:15:00 EST. What? Seriously? You don't care? That's sad. Well, if you're one of the chaps who don't care much for this franchise, then don't worry about it -- skip this over. But if you're excited about this game, take a gander!

Also, we'd like to mention this: if you think that once this game comes out, this site will be plagued with biased reviews, think again. I, personally, prefer a reviewing method similar to Famitsu: I'm going to grade games based on others in the same genre. In the case of sequels, I'm grading them in relation to their brethren first and then other games in the same genre. Sounds fair, right? This blogger will have to brush up on his FPS's though, to properly grade quite a few games. Time to dust off the N64 and pop in Goldeneye.

Humor us -- Devil May Cry 4 screens! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 14:30:00 EST. So imagine my excitement when reading on the DMC4 official site that the female lead in the new game is named just that -- Kyrie. The girl is dressed like, let's be honest, a princess, and in the TGS trailer, she was singing, too. What else is of interest is that she and Nero, the new hero, sort of have a thing going between them. A love interest, of sorts.

So... she'll probably be a little more important in the final game -- shaping the lives of other characters and whatnot. Probably get in trouble and have to be rescued by Nero a time or two. Perhaps complain about something being too dangerous and Nero spouting some overdramatic, cliche line in such a way that it's humorous. There's also some new DMC merchandise and more journal entries (but we can't really read that). As always, we'll cover it as news surfaces.
Hmm... okay, Devil May Cry 4 info -- Kyrie revealed! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Nov 2006 15:30:00 EST. USA marketing VP Charles Bellfield, according to NextGen, "had some comments about the bad press that the PS3 has endured as of late, saying that Sony's console shouldn't be underestimated--during the interview he almost seemed giddy about the technical prowess of the PS3."

Now, the interview is long and informative... most of the questions revolve around the loss of Clover Studios, but we'll skip those and focus on the Sony-specific issues. Not because the loss isn't important, but we're not focusing on it for now. So what does Bellfield say about the negative press? "I would like more positive angles of PS3 to be portrayed within the media than what's going on at the moment. It has a huge potential; firstly as the PlayStation brand and it's got great technical capabilities. I see it every day through our content-and I would like that positive story about it to be out there." Come on, Bellfield! We're hyping up your DMC4 like nobody's business! The positive stories are out there... it seems that even bigwigs in the gaming world are starting to roll their eyes at the overwhelming bias against Sony.
Capcom wants happier PS3 news! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Oct 2006 13:00:00 EST. You perform your combos, kill the baddies, collect some orbs, and repeat. The good news is that it's playable here at TGS, as opposed to the real time footage we feared.

While the environments are nicely detailed and the architecture appropriately atmospheric, the characters leave something to be desired. <strike>Dante</strike> Nero felt particularly clumsy in this build, going from a standstill to a full sprint with almost no transitional animation, a far cry form the series trademark fluidity. The enemies were also repetitive and uninspired and, perhaps due to the controller's lack of rumble, pounding on them lacked the visceral oomph the series is known for. The experience felt particularly detached.

The game did look good but, interestingly, after a brief system crash (hey, this is beta software after all), the Sony television display (the same one with the "Full 1080" sticker on the front) revealed this particular PS3 demo was running at a not-true and not-full 720p. Regardless of its technical pedigree, Devil May Cry 4 does illustrate that even pre-release PS3 games are graphically impressive, with none of those load times we've been worried about. Expect DMC4 to look even better when it gets released this Spring. As for the gameplay, if you've played the first three, we imagine you'll know exactly what you're getting into.

Apologies for the notably poor image ... Sony was not allowing any photographs of the games played at their booth, but we managed to snap this blurry mess before getting our pasty mitts slapped. Fortunately, they allowed Game Videos to get some video, which we've embedded after the break.
Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Sep 2006 04:55:00 EST. So what's new? Aside from a bunch of stuff we can't read... under the newly opened "WHAT'S Devil May Cry" link at the bottom, there is what appears to be a summary of Dante's story. Or at least, oodles of screens from previous games and bits of artwork as well. The diary has been changed, as well. Many of the previous screenshots were removed, but one still remains of some in-game footage. It's hard to make out, though.

Our beloved Dante has a few new pieces of concept art (looking very Breath of Fire IV in style, as previously stated) and two shots of in-game footage (though presumably cut-scene in nature... however, DMC cut scenes never had much of a boost over regular graphics). Is it just us, or does Dante kind of look like Viggo Mortensen? Just a little? Nero has a few pictures updated also and he's looking pretty much... awesome. What else can we say? Look at the site, consider buying an HDTV because this game deserves that much. We'll revisit DMC4 again after the Tokyo Game Show.
Goodie! All this one gets is a bunch of question marks and a "TGS" every once in a while. Of course, we're talking about the Devil May Cry 4 website that has launched -- more specifically, a link that leads to what appears to be the production team's journal. There are a few nifty pics under the journal area, at least. You can also order a soundtrack CD, aptly titled "Dangerous Hits".

The other things available as of 11:47 PM (will check it out around 12:30 and update) are a few pictures of both Dante and Nero. With things set up the way they are, our previous hypothesis may prove true: Dante will be playable and have an independant but parallel story with the new hero, Nero (who looks like an official spokesman for cool). The site also seems to hint that more screenshots of each character in action will be added on 9-15-06. Since PS3fanboy is completely into Devil May Cry, we'll definitely keep you up to date on this.

[Update: you can check out a screenshot or two here. But, thanks to the power of the Internet and Japanese magazines, we can get the goods just a wee bit earlier. According to a rough translation of Famitsu, this is what you're gonna get with DMC 4:

The game takes place after DMC 1, but before DMC 2.

You play as a new lead character by the name of Nero.

Nero has devilish right arm. He can draw enemies toward himself and then throw them.

The combo system has as base the one from DMC3 and they are revising/reworking details according to the fans' comment-remarks.

Nero's sword has a bar. The sword has some kind of a driving force in it. It's a new way/element to enjoy the sword handling.

At the Tokyo Game Show there will be real-time footage.

You can view the magazine scans of the article and photos here:

scan 01
scan 02
scan 03
scan 04

It's nice to know there will be "real-time footage" at TGS, but how about some real-time gameplay on the show floor? That'd certainly be a nice way to extend the olive branch to disheartened Sony fans -- especially when you break the news to your Japanese base about getting the short end of the stick come launch day.

Since most of us can't read kanji very well, IGN did the honors of translating the stats and they are summarized below:

Price:

90.29% -- think it's too pricey

9.71% -- think it's juuuuuuust right

Two Hardware Models Approach:

Launch Titles?

55.82% don't think they'll help sell PS3

39.32% say they're fine and dandy like sour candy

4.86% are unsure how the launch titles will help

E3 Impressions?

48.54% unchanged

32.52% are less confident

3.39% felt relieved

15.55% have no impression to give

Sales Goal of 6M units by March '07?

62.13% say no way

35.43% say yes way

2.44% say maybe

This may seem dismal news to the PS3 fan, but remember -- there's still the Tokyo Game Show in September. Hopefully PS3 can pull out a few surprises like Devil May Cry 4 or Resident Evil 5. Those would help on its launch, but in Japan at least, Sony's main competition will be the Wii.
Japanese mag surveys development community on PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jun 2006 13:30:00 EST.
