Getting gifts and embarrassing ourselves while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol are reasons enough to count down until the new year, but Capcom has given us another reason to continue to mark through days on the kitchen calender, announcing plans to release a free playable demo of Devil May Cry 4 over both the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in early 2008.

It's unclear exactly what will be included in the demo, with Capcom saying only that the download will serve to introduce the game's new hero, Nero, and feature levels "chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4's varied locales and allow gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero's unique abilities." The demo will also include in-game instructions on how to use DMC4's Exceed sword charge system and various superhuman abilities, made possible by Nero's "Devil Bringer" powers, and will be capped off with a fight against a surly boss named Berial. We hope the boss has insurance, because players have been waiting a long time revisit Devil May Cry, and we imagine Berial is going to buried many times before the game's February 5, 2008 release.
Devil May Cry 4 demo confirmed for PSN, XBL in early 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. What lurks inside is barely adequate, but Capcom has announced the contents of the Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition. A far cry from the cat helmets and Big Daddies we've come to expect from these sorts of compilations, this collection's highlight will be a DVD containing the first four episodes of ADV Film's Devil May Cry: The Animated Series.

A second DVD, designed to be slipped into your computer, will also be included, and will feature a "making of" video, the DMC4 soundtrack, as well as icons, screen savers, and wallpapers. Underwhelming, sure, though what we're most disappointed in is that while the powers that be at Capcom decided to include an artbook in the collection, they went the cheap route and simply stamped the eye candy digitally onto a DVD.

All of this will of course come stuffed inside a metal case, and while we enjoy shiny tin boxes as much as anyone, Capcom's gall to ask $80, some $20 more than the regular edition's asking price, for this lackluster montage is enough to make even our jaded heads shake in amazement. The special edition will ship for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 alongside the regular editions on February 5, 2008.
Capcom reveals mediocre Devil May Cry 4 special edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 14:56:00 EST. If you don't know, the protagonist featured so far is in fact Nero, though he bears a striking resemblance to Dante. Among other things, Dante has duel-wielded pistols, which are so popular with the kids these days. The clip is very short, but it does showcase some pretty nifty maneuvers for Dante. We like the upside down, spiraling double guns in particular. Check out the video and a new gallery after the break.
Continue reading First DMC4 playable Dante gameplay footage

First DMC4 playable Dante gameplay footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. Firstly, he describes the game's lead character, Nero, and his weapons -- a big sword called the Red Queen and a revolver called the Blue Rose. That's all well and good, but the real sound bite concerns the game's multiplatform status. Regarding the disparities between the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Devil May Cry 4, Kobayashi says, "Our plan is to make them pretty much identical."

In the unending flame war of console superiority, this is quite a statement. Kobayashi notes that there may be some functionality in the PS3 version not included in the 360 version. The statement is poorly translated though, so we're not exactly sure what that functionality will be (motion control, perhaps?). At any rate, the upshot is this: if you have to play Devil May Cry 4, you might as well do it for $200 less, because you won't be missing anything on the Xbox 360.

[Via Joystiq]
DMC4 on 360 and PS3: identical originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. And we can't think of a better way to show off its progress than with a bunch of new flaming hot screenshots. And what flaming screenshots they are (okay, we'll stop with the hot references now). Make the jump to see the latest screenshots showcasing what DMC 4 has to offer in the visuals department. From crazy motion blur effects to ultra bloomy specular bloom, DMC 4 has it all and a bag of BBQ chips (we couldn't resist).
New Devil May Cry 4 screens are HOT! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 09:30:00 EST. As many of you are already familiar, PSM has scored a huge 16-page exclusive on Devil May Cry 4 in their latest issue (in newsstands today). Their preview of the multi-platform action game has us yearning for more: "It's safe to say that the generational leap in hardware has not caused the series to lose sight of what it is: pure, all-out, unforgiving action ... Many mainstays from the series, including colored orbs, air juggling, and the Euro-gothic aesthetic remain intact- only everything is rendered in eye-blistering high-definition at a locked 60 frames per second."

While current subscribers are enjoying the dreamy pictures of Nero fighting demon hordes, the vigilant deal-watching group CAG has unearthed a fantastic deal for new subscriptions. 12 issues of PSM are now available for $5 at amazon.com, after instant rebate. While new subscribers are unlikely to receive the latest DMC4 blowout, one Lincoln is still a great deal for something to read when you absolutely have no access to PS3 Fanboy.
PSM brings DMC4 preview; gets cheap originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 23:00:00 EST. However, a new SOCOM seems like an inevitability, considering the success of the last two games.

It would be great to get two more high-profile games on our system, especially Devil May Cry. Let's hope this rumor comes to fruition.

[Fan art by timwork]
Rumor: SOCOM and Devil May Cry appear on retail radar originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 07 Apr 2007 00:50:00 EST. Instead of linking to all... fifteen... pictures... we're going to give you this one link and tell you how to access the rest. Are you ready to be the most basic of web manipulators?! Let's go! All you gotta do is change the part of the link that says "img001" to "img002" all the way to "img015". Ta-da! Enjoy those.

What you'll see are some neato pictures, some explanations of the moves you can get the main character to do (there appear to be plenty!), an interview with one of the creative minds behind the game (Hiroyuki Kobayashi), and... okay, mostly the interview. It's interesting to read, but I started to get a headache from straining my eyes so I stopped halfway through. But seriously... this Dante looks like a white-haired Viggo Mortensen. Don't even argue! It's the truth.

[Thanks Cagalli and an extended thanks to VegasJoe!]
Devil May Cry 4 scans hit PSM originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q: I was checking out the Devil May Cry 4 trailer on Xbox 360 Fanboy and a commenter raised an excellent question. I had heard a version of Devil May Cry is(was?) due for the PSP, any word on when that may happen or if it is still going to happen?
A: We contacted Capcom, and all they had to tell us was that the release "is still TBD." What does that mean? Sounds like they haven't started work on it yet, have they?

So says Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, posting on the official Capcom forums in the midst of a Devil May Cry outcry. When asked by fans whether the company's new mulitplatform strategy would extend to their pair of successful Xbox 360 titles, Svensson explains that "Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3," noting that the reasons for the continued exclusivity "are quite convoluted" and are bound by a slew of suspicious non-disclosure agreements.

He goes on to say that Capcom's current approach -- which sees Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 coming to both PS3 and Xbox 360 -- is for future titles and isn't meant to be applied in a "retroactive" manner. Of course, this comes just days after Svensson used the forum to respond to sulking petitioners and their disdain for Devil May Cry gracing multiple platforms.

"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes," he said in a seperate thread. "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."

Apparently, Dead Rising and Lost Planet simply missed the multiplatform boat.
Earth-shattering announcements are made, megatons are dropped and the entire gaming community explodes and reconstitutes itself so often that the rest of the internet views it as a sort of radioactive leper who's constantly chasing after a pair of misplaced thumbs. Perhaps that's why, every now and then, we're good for a laugh.

Take this online petition, for instance. Whether it's made in jest or not doesn't really change the fact that it's absolutely hysterical. It seems a group of Devil May Cry fans are extremely upset about the game going to the Xbox 360 and PC in addition to the PS3 -- so much so that they're going to boycott Capcom and not buy either version. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. It's basically just a mishmash of gameplay segments. One thing we have to point out is the game's combo system. Like many games, Devil May Cry 4 appears to employ a combat multiplier. The one shown in the video showcases different grades: D, C, B, A, and S. Under normal circumstances this wouldn't really even be worth mentioning, but each grade has a little phrase to go with it. Unfortunately, it looks like Capcom decided to pull these phrases off of a '90s era high school trapper keeper. Behold the horrifying list:

D -- "Do it!"
C -- "Come on!"
B -- "Big up!"
A -- "All that!"
S -- "Slammin beat!"

Call us critical, but these phrases seem to clash just a little with rapid fire demon slaying. At least the game looks fun, right?
Devil May Cry 4 trailer: slammin beat! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 14:05:00 EST. Capcom has been very open about expanding its properties, making a particular effort to develop titles on PCs, which makes quick console ports a snap. Sony's list of PS3-exclusive third party games continues to diminish. Capcom has just announced their plans to make Devil May Cry 4 a multi-platform game. The game is now in development for the Xbox 360 and the PC, with the 360 version launching simultaneously as the PS3 version.

"Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal," said Mark Beaumont , executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe said in the latest press release.

While making the game accessible to the largest audience possible is admirable, Sony must now ensure that they do not lose further exclusives. Currently, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are still slated for PS3-exclusive release, but Sony must make every effort that Konami and Square Enix don't follow suit.
Devil May Cry 4 no longer a PS3 exclusive originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 22:15:00 EST. All is not lost, however, as the former members of Capcom's Clover Studios have moved their aspirations to fresher soil. GameDaily BIZ reports that the team's new studio, Seeds, is currently in the process of hiring new employees to join a current roster of 51.

Amongst those lies a designer trifecta: Viewtiful Joe's Atsushi Inaba, Resident Evil's Shinji Mikami and Devil May Cry's Hideki Kamiya. Seeds has yet to announce any projects, but a cel-shaded, survival-horror title (with a guitar-wielding protagonist) would certainly be a good start.
Former Clover members start up new studio originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 09:10:00 EST. Inside, there is an article discussing the future of Devil May Cry 4 and whether it will remain a PS3 exclusive. PSM is reporting that Capcom will be showing some more Microsoft love and will be bringing the series to the Xbox 360. We've all heard this rumor before, but we're starting to feel a little more giddy by the day. He reveals that he'd love to make God of War III on the PLAYSTATION 3, if given the chance. He also makes note of the mistakes he's made. Firstly, he states that God of War's battle system is not as good as Devil May Cry's (agreed). And he also admits that his canceled PSP project, "Project HL," was really axed not because of the PS3, but because it wasn't progressing very well:

"I just **BLEEP**ed up my game on the PSP, it wasn't any good! That's true! There wasn't a **BLEEP** rumor!"

The full video interview is available, after the break. Obviously, if you didn't **BLEEP**ing notice, it features some profanity.

[Via Joystiq]
Continue reading David Jaffe admits drunkenly that his PSP game sucked

David Jaffe admits drunkenly that his PSP game sucked originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 13:45:00 EST. From Nero staring at his arm to you staring at Nero's arm, there's a lot of arm and arm-glowing fetish going on here. These screens almost tossed in a few of Nero's head as an afterthought to hide the fact Capcom is having a love affair with Nero's arm (as opposed to, say, an ice cream sandwich). I took the liberty of slapping my favorite screenie here, but you've got to see it fullscreen. You can practically see every thread in Nero's coat. Is it pre-rendered? We're going to assume not, since every shot is in the same location with no action going on -- that is to say, the screens are a way for Capcom to show us Nero in all his different fancy poses. What do you guys think? This game will hopefully rock our socks off.
More Devil May Cry 4 screens for you to [not] ignore originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Nov 2006 16:00:00 EST. It's been all too soon, but I can't help myself. Here's another gameplay video of Nero slapping some enemies around. Stylish. So very, very Dope and Awesome. This is a pretty decent video, not too long, not too short. The player isn't too shabby, so you can see a little bit of the awesomeness you'll probably learn to pull off. Honestly, there isn't much else to say about it. There's nothing necessarily new to bring to the table, just a little more of my personal agenda seeping into your plate of PS3 hype. Yes, this is a personal favorite, but it's still a PS3 game and it's going to get hyped up. Let's see what's been updated on the official DMC4 site since the closing of the Tokyo Game Show... ah, how about that. Lots. We've got five new screenshots of Nero doing what he's shaping up to do best: being awesome. Check 'em out, background image them if you feel the need. Ooh, what's this? We've also got some stages to look at. Interesting art style on them (very Breath of Fire IV), but hey, who wouldn't want to run down a long, impractically large cathedral hallway? Or take in the view of a pretty, pretty town before slaying some demons? There's also the video they showed at the Tokyo Game Show if you missed it... it's fantastic. So excited for this game. So excited for many of the games. Just... excitement. Who's excited? Yeah.
More Devil May Cry 4 screens and levels and goodness originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Sep 2006 09:00:00 EST. Let's strip down the problems they had with the game and give 'em our two cents.

"...feels neither new nor exciting." It's a sequel. It's supposed to be a familiar scheme, but with different content (weapons, etc... like Nero's arm. Of course, that wasn't commented on at all). If games were judged by how new and exciting they felt, how many times would Madden have to reinvent their franchise? If it's game #213523 (MegaMan, we're looking at you) then okay, but this is a pretty new franchise and deserves its familiarity.

"Nero felt particularly clumsy in this build, going from a standstill to a full sprint with almost no transitional animation, a far cry form the series trademark fluidity." We disagree. Dante always busted into a full sprint with hardly any animation transitions and that's fine. If you want him to walk, hold R1. Otherwise, you're busting ass. How does that detract from gameplay, again?

"The enemies were also repetitive and uninspired and, perhaps due to the controller's lack of rumble, pounding on them lacked the visceral oomph the series is known for. The experience felt particularly detached." Again, let's compare to the Joystiq-ly hailed Dead Rising. Because you know, hordes of zombies don't grow repetitive and uninspired at all. Even so, it's a demo. They aren't going to throw a multitude of baddies at you yet -- they want you to survive the demo. But the rumble thing? We agree. Everything is going to take a hit from that crucial missing feature.

His other reactions were cautiously optimistic and understandably so. Still, Joystiq's spin train seems to be following a different set of rails than the PS3fanboy track. We're still excited for this game and all lovers of previous entries should be, too -- with the gameplay videos and reactions popping up, it seems few can deny the beauty the PS3 is putting out.

[via Joystiq]
Joystiq's hands-on with Devil May Cry 4... a kind rebuttal originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Sep 2006 05:30:00 EST. You perform your combos, kill the baddies, collect some orbs, and repeat. The good news is that it's playable here at TGS, as opposed to the real time footage we feared.

While the environments are nicely detailed and the architecture appropriately atmospheric, the characters leave something to be desired. <strike>Dante</strike> Nero felt particularly clumsy in this build, going from a standstill to a full sprint with almost no transitional animation, a far cry form the series trademark fluidity. The enemies were also repetitive and uninspired and, perhaps due to the controller's lack of rumble, pounding on them lacked the visceral oomph the series is known for. The experience felt particularly detached.

The game did look good but, interestingly, after a brief system crash (hey, this is beta software after all), the Sony television display (the same one with the "Full 1080" sticker on the front) revealed this particular PS3 demo was running at a not-true and not-full 720p. Regardless of its technical pedigree, Devil May Cry 4 does illustrate that even pre-release PS3 games are graphically impressive, with none of those load times we've been worried about. Expect DMC4 to look even better when it gets released this Spring. As for the gameplay, if you've played the first three, we imagine you'll know exactly what you're getting into.

Apologies for the notably poor image ... Sony was not allowing any photographs of the games played at their booth, but we managed to snap this blurry mess before getting our pasty mitts slapped. Fortunately, they allowed Game Videos to get some video, which we've embedded after the break.
Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Sep 2006 04:55:00 EST. It looks all right. It doesn't seem like too much of a separation from standard FPS titles, but it's worth a look if you're an FPS junkie.

There's also a gorgeous Ridge Racer 7 gameply video. It looks better than all right. Mostly awesome. Just look at that gorgeous car go around that gorgeous track... and rear-end that other car. It's pretty sweet.

Also, a Ninja Gaiden Sigma trailer is up and running. If you guys were right, those who've played Ninja Gaiden Black won't see too much new here. But then again, maybe so. Let us know.

Here's a gameplay video of Lair also. What can we say? Dragons, flying, destruction... it's something special, to be sure.

Lastly, there's a gameplay video of Devil May Cry 4. Besides the fact the person playing it has no idea what he's doing (sorry, but it's true, unless the controls have changed completely), the game looks astoundingly good. Bias? Sure. But it does. If you mention the cape/sword clipping, that's true, but that in no way should detract from your enjoyment of the game.

Anyway, we'll keep you informed of other game videos and other stuff as we get our news from the Joystiq staff that had the honor of being there.
TGS videos attack! There is what seems like gameplay footage, but it's still hard to tell. Either way, Kojima knows how to keep us interested in his work. Hooray.

A little more fun info in the forum explains that the art director and designer is the same that was in charge of the Breath of Fire series (the art predominantly reminds us of BOF:IV, which is also our favorite of the series... what about you guys? Which BoF game did you like best, if any?). Also of interest is the action choreographer, Yuji Shimomura. He did the action choreography of the Yakuza vs. Zombie vs. insane crazy plot vs. vomiting blood overload movie entitled Versus (it is recommended for campy movie lovers and for sheer awesomeness). So how about that? Good stuff.
Devil May Cry 4... some screens to make you feel "Stylish!" originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 09:30:00 EST. As a few readers noted, something was up with the silhouette of Dante on the official website. Indeed there was -- turns out, that's not Dante at all. That's Nero. Name sounds familiar, doesn't it? Check your DMC documents to see if you can connect the name to the story (because honestly, we forgot where we heard the name and don't intend on playing through all three games today). Dante will still be around, but perceived as an enemy who kills Nero's allies. The Dante we see is post-DMC1 but pre-DMC2 (game chronology therefore runs 3, 1, 4, 2).

Nero himself can do most of the Dante-juggling we've grown to love. He also has a handy, well, hand, that can pull distant enemies in or throw close enemies away. Some of the combat elements of DMC3 have been tweaked for this installment, but it's more or less under wraps until the Tokyo Game Show, where we can play a stage as Nero. There will also be a special announcement. Possibly that Dante is an unlockable character with a (possibly) independant story. That'd be cool, but it's doubtful. We can hope, though! Check us out after midnight tonight for our take on the open official website. Oh, and if that's not enough fun, check out some new DMC4 scans.

[Thanks to Andrew Yoon for the scan link!]
How about some more Devil May Cry 4 news? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 14:30:00 EST. Now, we bring you the news that Capcom is planning to deliver this successful franchise to the PSP. CVG has noticed that on the Japanese site for Capcom, there is a note about bringing Dante and company to Sony's little handheld.

The only information given is that the game will be in the "stylish action" genre of gameplay. Tomorrow, the countdown on the DMC teaser site ends, so maybe we'll get more info by then. Power -- Give me more power!"

This isn't quite a rant, more of an excited boy getting geared up for one of his favorite gaming franchises. The Devil May Cry 4 teaser site is active and is promising something will happen in seven days. No, not a mysterious call from a little girl who brings your life to an end. At least, we hope not. What could happen? A full-blown gameplay trailer (since it's going to be playable at TGS, those of us who can't attend would like to see the game in action)? Some sort of contest? Just a looping image of Dante laughing at us?

From the quote at the top of the page, is it safe to assume this latest entry in the series takes place after the events of Devil May Cry 2? This blogger's memory of that game's story is fuzzy at best. The third one completely erased any sort of images from the mind. Either it takes place after the second, or could it be the story of the legendary Sparda? Though the character shown at last year's E3 looked a lot like Dante. Maybe his brother? Ahh, the excitement. Hopefully the difficulty will remain medium-to-high. No one wants the cakewalk like DMC2.
Devil May Cry 4 -- forgive the fanboy excitement originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Sep 2006 13:30:00 EST. As suspected, Capcom's mega-hit Resident Evil 4 will be making its way, from its roots on the Gamecube and subsequently the PS2, to the PC. It's not going alone though: Capcom's Onimusha 3 and Devil May Cry 3 will be along for the ride, and Ubisoft will be handling the distribution of all three titles. Hopefully the games will enjoy a high-res makeover before their release, instead of standard-definition ports with PS2 textures.

Here's the part where both companies gush about how thrilled -- errr, apologies, it appears they are both excited, not thrilled -- to be working with one another on this historic event.

Ubisoft: "Ubisoft is excited to be bringing three of the industry's most innovative titles, including Resident Evil 4... to PC gamers around the world."

Capcom: "Capcom is excited to be taking advantage of Ubisoft's global distribution network to deliver our hottest titles for gamers around the world to play and enjoy,"

This can be roughly translated the following way:

A corporate boardroom. Afternoon. Two anthropomorphised corporations sit across a meeting table; their hands almost touching, their eyes locked.

UBISOFT: I'm so excited! Think about it: your games, my distribution. We're perfect for each other.

CAPCOM: No, I'm way more excited to be working with you! You're French... and sophisticated.

UBISOFT: You're sweet, but really, I'm soooo excited. I can't wait to get your games out to gamers to game with all around the world.

CAPCOM: I'm excited infinity plus one!
