Ninja Theory's reimagining of Devil May Cry may be the one that ignited controversy, but we think it's even more radical to reimagine it as a game with no buttons. That's exactly what Capcom did with the iOS version of DMC4.

If you'd like to see the results of that experiment, you can pick it up through November 8 for 99 cents. The sale coincides with an update that adds a new "Devil Trigger Mode" and playable Dante. In other news, DMC4 Refrain didn't already have a playable Dante.
Dante slashes Devil May Cry 4 iOS price to .99 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST. If Street Fighter IV's misguided iOS port hasn't frustrated you enough, Capcom has revealed an even more quizzical addition to its touch screen library. Devil May Cry 4 Refrain is a bite-sized version of the console game, featuring the same story as the original. You'll assume control of Nero across ten maze-like levels. (Well, if the on-screen HUD is any indication, "control" might be an overly-generous term.)

Refrain is scheduled for release later this month, with a sticker price of $6.99. Although the initial release will only offer Nero as a playable character, future updates will add Dante and extra challenge modes. Microsoft has unfurled some of its plans for Xbox Live downloadable content for April, including new additions to Games on Demand and Deals of the Week, as well as the April 14th release of Final Fight: Double Impact.

On top of that, look for a half-priced The Maw on the week of April 12 and two add-ons for Mega Man 10 this week: Bass and Special Stage 1. Head past the break for the full list.
It's Tuesday, and that means some new Xbox Live Games on Demand. This week we get a double dose of Capcom goodness, with both Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet: Colonies hitting the service. Whether you'd like to blast giant alien bugs in the frozen wastes of a distant planet or, alternatively, slay demons with crazy stylish movies, well, that's up to you.

Should you decide that either game is for you, each costs $19.99 in the US. As usual, pricing varies by region, so be sure to check first.
Capcom has good news for those of us with no tolerance for relics like stores and boxes: starting December 22, the PC version of Devil May Cry 4 will be available for download on "the digital distribution partner of your choice," including, of course, Capcom's own shop, where pre-orders are being accepted for $29.99. The 360 version will hit Games on Demand, along with Lost Planet Colonies Edition, the same day.

Capcom notes that the PC version of the action game features some enhancements not found in the console versions: altered enemy placements, a "Turbo Mode," an extra-difficult "Legendary Dark Knight Mode," among several visual tweaks. And now, it's enhanced with buying it from home mode!
You may download PC/360 Devil May Cry 4 on December 22 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 15:45:00 EST. Capcom's Triple Pack of awesomeness will not make it to the shores (nor stores) of Europe. Eurogamer was given the sad news by a Capcom representative, who said, "We're not doing it here." Although he could have been referring to the latest dance craze sweeping the continent, everyone's quite sure he was referring to the zombie-, demon- and bug-fighting bundle.

The Platinum Hits Triple Pack releases September 8 in North America and features Dead Rising, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition and Devil May Cry 4.
Capcom's triple-pack not coming to Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. If your gaming time has been sorely missing some Capcom TLC, then know the company is set to offer up a few of its older titles in one Xbox 360 package. Starting September 8, gamers can snatch up Capcom's Platinum Hits Triple Pack, which is pretty much just that: A package containing Dead Rising; Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition; and Devil May Cry 4.

It's all well and good to try and introduce gamers to some of your almost-classics, but we think Capcom seriously missed a chance to get some Bionic Commandos out there into the world. Yes, we get it's a Platinum Hits bundle, but what could you possibly be doing with all those discs, Capcom? Building a fort in the break room?
Capcom offers up $40 Platinum Hits Triple Pack for Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 02:00:00 EST. Old Snake, domestic partners Ratchet & Clank, glam goth Nero and others will be offered up as PS3 "Greatest Hits" for $30 starting June 16. This will be the second round of discounted best-selling software for the console, as the first batch hit at around the same time last year. The latest additions include:

Army of Two

Battlefield Bad Company

Devil May Cry 4

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

With almost all those titles (maybe) prepping for sequels in the near future, if you haven't checked them out, there's some quality in the offerings.
MGS4, Ratchet, others $30 as PS3 'Greatest Hits' starting June 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 May 2009 10:03:00 EST. We may not always have loved every one of his games or his hairstyles, but we wanted to take a moment to tip our hat to Dante, whose Devil May Cry series has reached the milestone of 10 million units shipped. For some perspective, 10 million pennies would make a six-foot by six-foot cube, a cube we imagined would be considerably larger and more impressive before we started doing the math.

When asked if he was choked up by the news, Dante said, "Devils never cry ... These tears, tears are a gift only humans have." Nero later chimed in unprompted that he was going to Disneyworld.
Devil May Cry hits 10 million shipped originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 09:08:00 EST.
A poster on Capcom Unity's forums has received an answer to the question of whether Devil May Cry 4 and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be getting the trophy treatment and it is no. Capcom feels that DMC4 already has "its own little trophylike system" and the Puzzle Fighter team has moved on to other projects.

There is a tiny bit of good news though, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix may have trophies implemented, but it will depend on "what schedules look like and what Sony's requirements are." The only real good news is future games from Capcom will all have trophies, as it has "been worked into CEI's developer contracts as a required deliverable." Have other publishers signed such a contract?

This is rather disappointing, but after a string of such reports, we are not surprised. We are just really hoping SSF2T HD Remix will have support.

[Thanks, Jake C.!]
Capcom: No trophy support for Devil May Cry 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. You know the industry's come a long way when consoles are no longer the exclusive domain of androgynous, sword-waving jackasses with glowing demon arms. Capcom has sent us a reminder that the Personal Computer version of Devil May Cry 4, the latest (and commercially successful) entry in its slash-and-shoot saga, is due to arrive "THIS SUMMER." Said version will enhance Nero and Dante's adventure by adding "new modes, enhanced graphics options and some additional content."

For those not sold on the joys of launching demons into the air and then shooting them repeatedly, Capcom will offer a demo and performance benchmark before the retail version ships.
Devil May Cry 4 tears up PCs this Summer, demo on the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 18:30:00 EST. Did you feel that Devil May Cry 4 was so busy with its own style that it neglected to actually let you play -- well, so did Yahtzee. This week Zero Punctuation takes on DMC 4, the game which pulled a Metal Gear Solid 2 on us and introduced a character who was kind of like our original hero, but totally not. Don't be upset with Yahtzee's rage DMC fanboys, take solace in the knowledge that your beloved franchise has already shipped 2 million copies.

This week's less NSFW than usual review of Devil May Cry 4 can be found after the break.
Continue reading Zero Punctuation tears up Devil May Cry 4

Zero Punctuation tears up Devil May Cry 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 21:00:00 EST. Rut roh. Don't look now, but today's update is really rather bad. It's been a while since we've come out and said that a PSN update has been dire, because the quality has improved drastically over the last six months. Still, unless you're a fan of developer diaries, or demos that have been on the US Store for two weeks, then there's not a lot here for you. Here's the full release list:

Lost Planet online demo (free)

Conflict: Denied Ops launch trailer (free)

Conflict: Denied Ops Dev Diary 3 video (free)

Assassin's Creed Dev Diary trailer: Altair (free)

7 Devil May Cry 4 wallpapers (free)

Sports theme (free)

It seems that SCEE have put Snakeball back on the front page, even though it came out in December. Our guess is it's their attempt to pad out today's update, but it hasn't really worked. Oh well, the long wait until next Thursday starts now.
European PSN Updates for February 21st originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 11:00:00 EST. This announcement comes hot on the heels of news that the DMC4 demo served 1 million gamers and word that the 360 version overwhelmingly outsold the PS3 version. We're thinking Capcom is quite proud of their decision to take DMC4 multi-platform seeing all the success the game has already had. We're also thinking 1.5 million of the 2 million copies sold were probably on the Xbox 360. Oh yeah, we so went there.
Capcom: Devil May Cry 4 is now double platinum originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 12:15:00 EST. Capcom's leather-clad bender Devil May Cry 4 has shipped out an impressive 2 million units since its debut two weeks ago, making it the first game in the opulent franchise to reach the milestone so quickly and the latest feather in the cap for Capcom's now 9 million unit selling series.

This accolade is no doubt helped by the fact that the sequel, unlike those that came before it, was released for two platforms simultaneously, satiating players' thirst for over-the-top action regardless if they wave their banner over the Xbox 360 or PS3. In addition, Capcom continues to note that a PC version, for those inclined to play console-style games while tethered to their monitor and desk chair, will be released in the months ahead.
Devil May Cry 4 sheds 2 million tears originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 10:00:00 EST. It appears Capcom's decision to release Devil May Cry 4 on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 is paying immediate dividends as the company has announced the new entry in the popular series has already sold two million units throughout the world.

Additionally, this remarkable number now accounts for nearly a quarter of the entire series' total sales, which is pretty darn impressive.

Unfortunately, the one thing Capcom didn't release is how sales for each console stacked up, so it appears the fanboy wars will have take a break for a little while. Perhaps we can all agree to a ceasefire and just appreciate that a good game from a great franchise is this successful.
There's not really a whole lot more to say other than congratulations on making a bajillion dollars Capcom.
Devil May Cry 4 hits 2 million worldwide originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 08:00:00 EST. It's the truth, brought to us by the same Capcom rep who gave the PS3 install response. With games like Lost Planet and Dead Rising its obvious that from early this generation, Capcom has been supporting XBLM with demos. It looks like their system is working and now over a million people have some form of DMC4 in their hands. Here's hoping that all developers and publishers now see the potential of demos to sell a game.
DMC4 Demo: Over 1 Million Served originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 07:00:00 EST. Capcom's over-the-top action extravaganza, Devil May Cry 4, has debuted at the top of the UK's all-format software sales chart, rudely bumping previous one-er Burnout: Paradise down to fourth place. GamesIndustry.biz reports that 61 percent of the title's sales came from the Xbox 360 version, a fact which is sure to make loyalists and rabid petitioners weep uncontrollably. Of course, it didn't help that the PlayStation 3 version had to deal with price gouging and an installation stigma.

In other satanic sniveling news, Capcom has announced that the Devil May Cry 4 demo has been downloaded over a million times on Xbox Live, making it the first piece of code to do so in 2008. Since appearing on the network January 24th, it's reportedly been averaging over 25,000 downloads a day.
Devil May Cry 4 tears up UK charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 15:57:00 EST. While Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have had their share of exclusive third-party titles (of varying quality) the most talked about issues stem from titles going multiplatform. Such was the case for Devil May Cry 4, which when announced for the Xbox 360 and PC sent Sony loyalists into a maddening spiral of rage. The incentive for publishers to distribute once exclusive titles across multiple platforms opens the flood gates of potential profits (Read: monies) and that excuse seems to be paying off for Capcom.

According to a report from Gamesindustry.biz the initial sales figures of DMC4 favor the Xbox 360 version in the UK claiming 61% of the title's total software launch sales while Sony <strike>and the PC share the</strike> claims the remaining 39%. While we think it's great to have quality releases from Capcom in this generation for the Xbox we doubt anything they do can ever make up for Dino Crisis 3.

Update: Whoops, the PC version hasn't been released.
DMC4 for Xbox 360 outsells PS3 in UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 11:45:00 EST.
Shed a tear for those who still feel utterly betrayed by a huge, profit-seeking corporation's decision to release a game on more than one platform. The (fan)boycotters are missing out on all the demon demolishing found in Devil May Cry 4, Capcom's latest take on the continuing struggle between the forces of evil and whichever sword-wielding smack talker walks out of the salon first. Though Beelzebub's fourth bawl brawl clearly sticks to the franchise formula, we think Dante Lite (pictured above) is crashing a party that only got into full swing with the third game.

Eurogamer (70/100): "After more than seven years, the Devil May Cry series finds itself in the same kind of safe, reliable trough that Resident Evil was in before Resi 4. DMC4 can still fall back on rock-solid combat mechanics and some standout moments, but it feels as though it's comfortable to slowly refine what was good about previous versions rather than evolve into something spectacular."

1UP (85/100): "Although it dips into the recycling bin a bit too much, Devil May Cry 4 still remains a must-play title for action-adventure gamers. Its gorgeous trappings, addictive combat, and well-balanced difficulty make it the most satisfying DMC in years, and Dante's such a killer character that you'll actually want to tackle the game on a tougher difficulty in order to fully explore his amazing arsenal."

IGN: (87/100): "Though the focus might be more on Nero than Dante, and could've been named something else with a Dante cameo, DMC4 still has everything that fans expect of the game - over the top fight sequences, tons of replayability and an experience with an excellent production value. Whether it's on the PS3 or the 360, action fans are going to get one incredible experience with this game, and if you own either system, you'll have a great time."

Capcom has announced (via Gamasutra) the results of its fiscal third quarter, showing 51.66 billion yen in net sales (US $484.5 million; a 4.8 percent increase) but net income dropping 17.8 percent to 3.57 billion yen (US $33.5m). Despite the decline and thanks to expected sales of Devil May Cry 4, Capcom raised its expected fiscal year operating profit to 11.5 billion yen (US $107.9m), a 20 percent increase over last year and 15 percent more than previous forecasts.

Strong-selling titles for Capcom include Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles in North America and Monster Hunter 2 in Japan. Zack & Wiki unit sales were noted as growing "steadily" (and given the title's critical praise, it's about time). The publisher's "stagnant" arcade and coin-op divisions and uncertainties in the Japanese and world economies were cited as reasons for its profit drop. Devil May Cry 4 is expected to hit 1.9 million in unit sales by March 31.
Capcom sees Q3 profit decline, raises full-year forecast originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 14:30:00 EST. Residents of the United States and Canada are invited to enter the contest once per day until the draw closes on February 22 at 9:59pm PST. We recommend the Xbox 360 version, only because we tend to play games as soon as we insert them into our consoles and not when we're planning to take a long hot bubble bath while it installs. As we are apparently not worthy to receive a copy of our own (please, Capcom!), we figured we'd point out the review for our readers. For the most part, everything in the review should apply to the Xbox 360 version as well. You know, things like good gameplay, great graphics, and wonky camera angles. Those things should pop up on your 360 as well. You should, however, disregard the mishegoss about installing the game onto a hard drive and also the single reference to the O button. Everything else should be copacetic. Oh, and in case you're wondering, the game looks to be pretty damned good.

PS3F reviews Devil May Cry 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 14:00:00 EST. The game hasn't even been released yet and already there's a lot of online controversy over Devil May Cry 4's installation procedure. The game takes around 20 minutes to install about 5 gigabytes of data to your hard drive, during which there's a five-minute looping recap slideshow. Capcom's Chris Kramer responded to CVG with a statement regarding the issue: "If you don't want to watch the 'Previously, on Devil May Cry...' portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back."

Kramer continues, "Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes." Wah, indeed! We agree completely with Kramer on this -- a twenty minute long installation sequence is not a big deal. It cuts down on load times, making it load faster than the 360 version despite the slower drive speed. Without the install, players would be complaining about lengthy load times. Which is better? That's a hypothetical question because we already know and, clearly, so does Capcom.

Capcom on DMC4 installation: What's the big deal? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Borrowing a bit of that white-haired bravado, Capcom has unapologetically responded to the so-called crybabies for whom Devil May Cry 4's 21 min, 40 sec PlayStation 3 pre-game installation (timed by CVG) stretches out like an eternity of wasted opportunity and nonfulfillment. "Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes," Capcom's Chris Kramer fires back at any griefer who will listen.

Once the DMC4 installation is complete (a one-time process - unless you delete the 5GB of data), Capcom claims players will experience "near-Super Nintendo speed load times," which CVG clarifies as "one or two seconds shy of those in the [Xbox] 360 [version of the game]." Whether you feel this perk justifies the initial wait-to-play (which is alleviated by a screenshot recap of the series) or not, Capcom doesn't much care. Pre-game installation is a reality for a growing number of PS3 games. It's not a bullet-point any publisher wants to list on a press release or print on a retail box, but it's a 'next-gen feature' we all need to get used to.
Capcom addresses DMC4 install complaints originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 12:55:00 EST. Our BFFs over at PS3 Fanboy have noticed something interesting about the "Accomplishments" received while playing the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4. Though it's not the first game to copy and paste the in-game achievements from the 360 version, DMC4 is the first title to recognize the accomplishments with a PS3 system screen, rather than an in-game notice.

This could possibly mean nothing, but it's equally possible that Devil May Cry 4 may be one of the first games to send accomplishment information to the PS3 system, for integration with services like the upcoming Playstation Home. We've already seen that Home will feature trophies collected from various accomplishments in games. Perhaps this could be the key to that feature.

As drab as the accomplishments notice is, it'll be interesting to see what it portends, if anything.
Devil May Cry 4 PS3 'accomplishments' may hint at Home integration originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 09:30:00 EST. This week marks the North American release of Devil May Cry 4 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. To celebrate, the crew at PS3 Fanboy have written a retrospective on the series as a whole. It's a good refresher for those who haven't touched the series in a long time (or ever). It also makes for a great read while PS3 owners wade through the required installation. (About 30 minutes in length, according to PS Fanboy editor Andrew Yoon.)

Concluding the retrospective is a review of Devil May Cry 4. You can browse the retrospective via the links below and enjoy our rather extensive gallery.

We've been happily playing Devil May Cry 4 for a wee while now (check out our review and awesome series retrospective) and whilst doing so we noticed something a little strange about the game's accomplishment system. It's not the first multiplatform game to include the Xbox 360 achievements inside the PS3 version, by any means, though it is the first to allow players to check out their online accomplishment rankings as well as check out exactly which individual accomplishment goals their friends have achieved.

The interesting thing is that the "Accomplishment Unlocked" screen is a part of the PS3 Operating System, similar to the network connection screen, rather than an in game messsage. What does this mean? Well it could mean that DMC4 is the first game to include specific data which Home will later be able to turn into trophies (when it's finally released). It could potentially indicate other exciting things, but we'll leave the rampant speculation to those who do it best: you, the commenters.

The discerning Devil May Cry fan can pick up on the minute subtleties hidden within the surprisingly complex and deep battle system the series is known for. It's that kind of discerning ability that's needed to see the improvements of Devil May Cry 4. As the franchise's first outing in the current generation of games, it's fascinating to see how much the series has improved, and how much it has stayed the same. Many of the changes featured in Devil May Cry 4 make it much more accessible than previous iterations in the series. Newcomers will appreciate the toned down difficulty and streamlined level design. But, the return of mainstay flaws, like unnecessary (and confusing) backtracking, and poor platforming will frustrate players -- both hardcore vets and newcomers alike. However, in spite of its few flaws, DMC4 is undeniably a fun game, and quite possibly the best in the series.

Some previewers unjustly passed Nero off as a simple Dante clone. Yes, it's not hard to see why gamers would confuse the two. Not only do they look similar, but their movements are seemingly identical. However, playing as Nero offers a brand new system for fans to master and enjoy. The addition of the Devil Bringer completely changes the way players will perform combos. No, it's not a subtle change -- rather, clever use of the arm introduces a whole new mechanic to the franchise, making this the freshest addition to the series so far.

Continue reading PS3 Fanboy review: Devil May Cry 4

PS3 Fanboy review: Devil May Cry 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 12:00:00 EST. First of all, we should mention that Turok is officially out this week (though it was released early in some areas; we saw it at Blockbuster yesterday). The star of the show this week is probably Devil May Cry 4 though, what with its demon slaying antics and longstanding pedigree. But wait, what's this? There's more? Yes, it seems the post-holiday dearth has finally ended (for the moment anyway), as this week sees three more titles as well. All told we have:

Devil May Cry 4

Turok

Culdcept Saga

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore

See, there's something for everybody (even gamers dying for a CCG / Monopoly hybrid). Not bad.
It seems like the release train is back at full speed now, after taking a month-long stop at Sleepytime Station post holidays. This week we've, of course, got the demonic emo action of Devil May Cry 4 and the actual release of Turok for the action fan. On portables, there's the new DS version of Assassin's Creed. PS2 owners are even getting a nice release with Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition. Welcome home, video games. ... Welcome home.
